So uh, updates! Our KC tabletop is proceeding smoothly, or as smoothly as a fleet of psychopaths can manage in the face of the GM attempting to get us killed at every opportunity! So far, the fleet's managed to break through the Abyssal blockade surrounding Japan and link up with the JMSDF and the trapped USN assets. We managed to get through pretty intact, besides Seydlitz becoming PUNISHED SEYDLITZ due to a combination of serious battle damage and an encounter with an Abyssal doppelganger of her. She... didn't take it well.

Then our fleet met our Japanese counterparts. It was... surreal. Like that one scene in Shaun of the Dead. You know the one.

And uh, naturally, things in Japan aren't very rosy. They've managed to hold the line, but attrition has eaten away at their forces and Japan has actually split into North and South, with the south being regular Japan and the north being ultranationalist and dicks in general.

Oh right, and one faction of the fleet is secretly trying to rehabilitate captured Abyssals while another faction is secretly aware that the ship spirit of our carrier, the Pacific, is actually active and alive.

So yeah, amid all these we gotta figure out how to save Japan! Meanwhile, we've met PUNISHED SAM, Willie being adopted into DesDiv6, Anna getting jealous of Inazuma for stealing her title as the cutest secretary ship, and super spoopy ship shit!

We're so fucking doomed.

Anyways, back to the quest!

You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Currently, you were looking at a list that Shen had give you of possible upgrades to your Rig. Your eyes dart down the options, and they all looked very tempting...

FIREPOWER

Mark 45 5"/54 Gun: A direct replacement for your current Mark 12 5"/38 guns, the Mark 45 cannon boasts improved fire rate, range, and penetration.

Harpoon Launcher: Replaces your torpedo launcher with a 4-tube missile launcher loaded with AGM-84 Harpoon antiship missiles, giving you range unmatched by any torpedo.

Mark 48 Torpedo Launcher: Replaces your current Mk14 torpedoes with the more modern Mk48 ADCAP torpedoes, increasing anti-submarine and anti-ship capability

DEFENSE

Phalanx CIWS: Adds a rapid fire 20mm vulcan cannon capable of engaging aircraft, incoming munitions, and even light surface targets at close ranges.

SeaRAM: Adds a portable missile launcher that can engage aerial targets at a much longer range and accuracy than the Phalanx, but cannot engage surface targets.

Composite Armor: Replaces your standard steel hull with high strength composites, vastly improving armor protection.

Explosive Reactive Armor: ERA blocks placed at certain critical areas of your Rig will protect from the first hit that would otherwise cause catastrophic damage.

SENSORS

Radar Suite: Adds on the most modern search and targeting radars to vastly improve detection range and weapon accuracy.

Countermeasures Suite: A combination of decoys, chaff launchers, and electronic warfare modules can serve to defend from a wide range of threats.

Towed Sonar Array: Replaces your current sonar with a more modern towed array that vastly improves detection of underwater threats.

Drone Launcher: Adds a small catapult that can launch up to two automated drones that can serve as additional sensor platforms and scouts.

PROPULSION

Diesel Electric Engines: Replaces your boilers with diesel engines in combination with electrical generators to improve speed and power generation.

Dynamic Screws: Propellers that can automatically change configuration serve to significantly increase maneuverability.

"Hm, I could use a better radar." You say with a grin, pointing to the specific part on the list.

"Oh, good choice!" Anna chimes. "The modern radar is AMAZING! Oh oh oh, just wait until you get AEGIS upgrades, and you're mind will be absolutely BLOWN!"

"Hmmmm, this will be a bit complicated." Shen nods as he takes the list from you. "At the minimum, we'll need to install AN/SPY-1D, AN/SPS-67(V)2, AN/SPS-73(V)12, and AN/SPG-62..."

"I have no idea what any of that means!" You continue to say happily. "I'm just gonna assume them more complicated it sounds, the better!"

"Children these days." Shen sighs and shakes his head. "I'll get preparations for the refits started right away. You should probably go find the Captain. He's been going around rounding up any shipgirls he can find for some sort of briefing."

"Oh, really?" Anna blinks.

"Is it important?" You ask.

"Don't know, it's just what I've been hearing." Shen shrugs as he wipes down his grease stained hands as the workshop fairies take over the tuning up of Anna's Rig, the little creatures swarming over it like ants.

"I suppose we should go find the Captain then." You groan, reluctant to get back into the groove of military life. "Anna, you wanna come with?"

"Sure!" Anna chirps happily. "I'll be back to check on my systems later, okay, Shen?"

"We're not going anywhere." Shen nods and turns to his technicians. "All right, we have three priority refits! I want you all to drop your current tasks an focus on pushing these refits out before the end of the day!"

Poor guy.

"So, so, what was your leave like?" Anna asks as she plops that oversized Indiana Jones hat on her head. "Well, besides the whole Abyssal attack thing."

"It was great. I learned a lot about the mainland." You grin. "It's just a shame I couldn't see more of it."

"Yeah, most of the shipgirls here have never even set foot on the continental US, much less go inland." Anna explains. "We always have to be vigilant for Abyssal attacks, like the one at San Diego."

"I hear ya. Couldn't even take a day off before getting dragged back into things." You sigh.

"Oh, oh, just a second!" Anna pauses as that little strand of hair above her forehead shoots straight up and starts twitching wildly. "I'm getting an incoming comm!"

At the same moment, you feel your phone vibrating in your pocket and pull it out. You see a single mass mailed text from the Capatain.

>REPORT TO BRIEFING ROOM ASAP

"Shit, time to go!" You say as you start to make a run for the briefing room.

"Hoel, wait!" Anna pants as she tries to catch up, already a handful of meters behind you. "Wait for meeeeee!"

No time to spare, you go FULL FUCKING STEAM!

"Hoooooeeeeeel!" Anna wails as she's literally taken off her feet and dragged along in the air behind you like a wayward balloon. One hand is clamped to yours while the other stays pinned to the top of her head to keep her Indy hat in place. "You're going too faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaast!"

"Just a little more!" You assure her, or at least, try to. You're pretty sure that mad cackle you let wasn't very reassuring at all.

Everything around you becomes a blur as you weave around obstacles, vehicles, and people. You finally see the rough outline of the main admin building where the briefing room was located and finally skid to a stop, your shoes screeching against the pavement, leaving a long burn mark. Anna's moment continues to carry her straight into your back, and her arms instinctively wrap around your waist.

"H-Hoel..." Anna gasps, completely out of breath. "That was... that was..."

"Yeah?"

"That was AMAZING!" Anna's eyes sparkle. "I-I've never gone that fast before!"

"One of the perks of being a destroyer!" You chuckle.

"Gaaaaaaaaaaaay." Darter and Dace tease as they walk past you two and into the building.

"Ha, you wish you could go as fast as me!" You retort and turn back to Anna. "Fuckin' subs."

"W-we should really be getting inside, too!" Anna pushes you forward lightly.

"Right!" You nod as you jog in.

The moment you enter the briefing room, you could see that the entire room was PACKED. There were waaaaaay more shipgirls than you ever remembered being in here at one time. Just how many shipsgirls did the Admiral pull in here?

You immediately spot your own task force, sitting up near the front. However, at the other end of the room, you could see the backs of Luce, Wren and Daly, their heads on oiled gears as they look around nervously, obviously intimidated by all of the unfamiliar shipgirls around them.

Well composite armour implies that it just makes our current armour better, not "thicker" and the ERA is mounted specifically on our rig, so no explosive bustier underneath our sailor suit.

Also: A radar? Seriously!? Out of all the cool modern shit we could have had and you anons chose a radar. You'd think we'd get more millage out a CIWS or a bigger gun given Hoel's aggressive nature but NOOOO.

What about our engines? We've had multiple instances where our boilers failed us, from the second/third thread all the way to the Battle of San Clemente.

That would have also been an entirely reasonable upgrade, which is why four people voted for it. (Compare to the three who wanted a better sensor suite.)

Add in San Diego and White Plains, and we're forming a miniature Carrier Strike Group.
>>
>>45809089
That would've been great too, since better mobility is pretty important to a Destroyer, which are all about Speed over Armor. But hey, now we have better capabilities to oversee and protect the battle-group due to the better sensors, so we're basically upgrading our command/combat capabilities over a combat/survival capability.

"Just a sec, Anna." You say as you push your way over to the Fletchers. This room was definitely over capacity, being reduced to standing room only. You have to worm or in some cases push your way through the thick forest of shipgirls. Some you recognize, many you do not. The air is thick with the hum of background conversation as shipgirls theorize what the purpose of the briefing is, or they were just catching up with small talk. You try to filter it all out and finally reach the Fletchers, who look like scared little puppies in the middle of the woods.

"Hey, girls!" You grin as you lean down next to them. "Nice to see ya here!"

"Hoel!" All three Fletchers' faces brighten at finally seeing a familiar ship.

"Hi!" Anna pokes out from behind you, still sticking to your back like glue. "I'm Anna! Are you all Hoel's friends, too?"

"Yup!" Luce nods rapidly. "Hoel, wanna sit with us?"

"I got a better idea." You grin. "The rest of my task force is here. How about we go sit with them?"

"Really?!" All three Fletchers' eyes widen in amazement.

"Yeah! They're really cool!" Anna adds in. "Besides Taffy 3 there's also Portland and San Diego!"

"Ooooooooooh!" The three destroyers gasp.

"All right, let's make our way there!" You say. "I'll lead, so Luce, you hold Anna's hand tight, Wren, you hold on to Luce and Daly you hold on to Wren. Stay in formation so we don't get separated!"

"Okay!" The girls nod happily.

You decide it's best not to make a scene in a place like this, and carefully weave your way through the thick press of shipgirls, making sure to give the larger battleships and carriers a wide berth. You then come across Darter and Dace again. Dace sees you and the little daisy chain you've set up with Anna and the Fletchers, and a smug smile begins to creep across her face.

"Oh, adding to the collection now, are we?" She giggles.

"Yeah yeah, laugh it it up." You grump. "But don't come crying to me if you take a depth charge up the ass!"

"Ohhhh, scary~!" Dace says with mock fear.

"Dace, please leave them be." Darter sighs as she tugs at Dace's arm. "We're already in hot water after you decided 'tagging' Midway was a good idea."

"H-how was I supposed to know she was packing that kind of heat?!" Dace stammers. With the annoying sub suitably distracted, you take the opportunity to push past and finally reach the rest of you task force.

"Jeez, Hoel, it's about time you-" Portland turns to reprimand you but stops when she sees the Fletchers in tow.

"Luce! Daly! Wren!" Johnston smiles.

"Hiiiiiiii!" The Fletchers chime.

You see Portland wanting to say something, ANYTHING to try and discipline you, but the slight blush in her cheeks and a bite of her lip indicates otherwise.

Your eyes dart to the Fletchers and back to her.

Well, you were always taught that if an enemy showed weakness, you had to do everything to exploit it!

"Luce, Daly, Wren." You grin evilly. "This here is Auntie Sweet Pea, and she loves big hugs! Why don't you give her one?"

"Yaaaay!" The Fletchers cheer.

"My name isn't-" Portland doesn't have a chance to finish before getting dogpiled by the Fletchers, toppling out of her chair. "Aaaaagh!"

"Oh wow, those glasses are so cute, where did you get them?!"

"So this is what a heavy cruiser is like!"

"Huh, I thought she'd have a bigger chest?"

You can see Portland wanting to just stand up and throw the Fletchers off of her, and being a cruiser, she definitely had the capability, but you could also see she wasn't willing to do anything potentially harmful to them.

Perfect.

You casually sit down on Portland's seat and motion to Anna to sit down next to you. Portland glares at you with pure HATE, right before being interrupted when Wren pulls her glasses off and tries them on herself.

"H-hey! Those are custom built!" Portland yelps.

"Cooooool!" Wren laughs, looking like a total NERD.

However, the room goes silent when the Captain enters, pacing down to the front of the room. He gives one glance at the little dogpile in front of him and coughs loudly. Even the Fletchers can recognize authority when they see it, and quickly zip back to the nearest seats, Wren completely forgetting to return the glasses she had "borrowed" from Portland. Portland is left to awkwardly stand up and brush off her disheveled clothes, her face beet red at the apparent humiliation in front of the Captain.

At least the Admiral wasn't here.

"Oh, destroyers, so energetic. Even our best cruisers can have trouble handling them." The Admiral chuckles as he walks in.

You've never seen Portland's face go from red to white so damn fast.

"Come on now, Sweet Pea." You say as you gently guide Portland into a nearby chair. "Just take a breather."

The Admiral sees you helping Portland down and gives an amused chuckle. You notice that Sam wasn't present. Probably still out cold somewhere. The Admiral takes a seat near the front, flanked by the shining stars of the fleet, Enterprise and Iowa, as the Captain takes the stage. He opens up with a cough as a projector activates, showing a map of Hawaii and the surrounding region.

"Now, I know in addition to our regular complement of shipgirls, we have many more temporarily transferred in from other bases and fronts." The Captain opens, his eyes scanning the packed briefing room. "Many of you I know where transferred here on short notice without explanation, and I apologize for that. This briefing is meant to explain our actions."

The projector picture then zooms in to show the small island of Kauo.

"It has come to our attention that during the attack on San Diego, the Abyssals appear to have completely withdrawn from Kauo, meaning this is the first time the Abyssals have willingly ceded territory back to humans."

The room suddenly explodes with murmurs and whispers. You glance at the rest of your task force, and your sisters give you nervous and uncertain looks as well.

"Excuse me, but isn't that a good thing?" One shipgirl asks as she raises her hand.

"Normally, yes, but in these particular circumstances, the implications are far more unsettling." The Captain grimaces as the projection switches to Midway. "It appears that the Abyssal forces that were pulled out are being used to bolster the Abyssal defenses around Midway."

The Captain gives a hard stare to the whole room for a brief second.

"Now, I'm sure you all know by now that the Abyssals are far from the mindless beasts the news reports claim them to be. The truth is, the Abyssals have been rapidly developing on all fronts, and have shown a shocking aptitude for strategic decision making." The Captain says grimly. "This leaves us with two possibilities. Either the attack on San Diego has exhausted the Abyssal's current strategic reserve, or the Abyssals are anticipating an attack on the island. Either way, the Joint Chiefs feel that now is the best time to attack. The Midway operation will commence within the next few days."

THIS makes the entire briefing room buzz with conversation. You couldn't blame them. A full scale offensive in just a few days notice?

"That's an awfully short time to prepare." San Diego frowns.

"Too little." Portland shakes her head, having finally recovered. "Did the Admiral really greenlight this?"

"Hah! That just means we get to kick their asses sooner!" Johnston laughs. "Ain't that right, Hoel!"

"Fuck yeah!" You nod in agreement. "The sooner we kick those Abyssals out the better!"

"Yeah!" The Fletchers chime in.

"I hope we can all have that same bravado." Portland sighs.

Another cough, from the Admiral this time, silences the room again. The Admiral kindly nods to the Captain, who continues the briefing.

"Because of the the accelerated schedule, we cannot expect the assistance of the JMSDF, as they have not made any significant headway. That means we've had to change what would originally be a two pronged attack into a full head on assault."

"Can we expect ANY foreign assistance?" A shipgirl in the back asks.

"We've already made requests to Japan, Canada, and the EU for additional forces to bolster us." The Captain answers. "No serious commitments yet though, and the Abyssals have been ratcheting up the pressure all over the globe. I don't expect more than a token contribution to arrive in the next couple of days, but any help is welcome."

Another brief moment of nervous mumbling.

"I will now explain the details about the offensive operation." The Captain continues as the projection begins to change to show troop positions and movements. "The offensive will be divided into five different forces. First is the conventional navy ships, which will stay in standoff position from the island and provide long range fire support and air cover. They will handle most of the shore bombardment duties, as well. The second force is the amphibious landing force, consisting of three Marine Expeditionary Units, who will land on Midway itself to clear the Abyssal presence."

Numerous blue dots begin to appear on the east end of the island.

"The next three forces will be consisting entirely of shipgirls." The Captain continues. "We will have the Main Assault Force, the Escort Force, and the Blocking Force. The Main Assault Force will consist of our heaviest ships, who will directly engage any Abyssal defenders and eliminate them. The Escort Force will provide direct protection to the landing forces. Finally, the blocking force will circle around to the west end of the island to prevent Abyssal forces from reinforcing Midway."

The screen then begins to display more information, showing which task forces were being deployed where. You could see your force being deployed to...

You saw that you were going to be put in as the escort forces along with the Fletchers. You guess you shouldn't be too surprised. That's what destroyers like you were made for, after all.

"Oh gosh, our first offensive operation!" Luce squeals.

"So exciting!" Wren nods quickly, still wearing Portland's glasses.

"It's gonna be awesome!" Daly nods in agreement.

You're tempted to chastise them, but you want to focus on the briefing. You keep our eyes trained on the Captain.

"We've finalized most of the ship assignments, as you can see." The Captain points out. "But there are still a few issues we need to resolve. Can Enterprise, Midway, and Hornet please step forward?"

(cont)
>>
>>45811085
There's a bit of mumbling as three of the US Navy's most famous carriers step onto the stage. There was Enterprise, with all of her grace and beauty, the epitome of all shipgirls everywhere. Midway meanwhile was looking prim and proper, though extremely confident. Finally, you see Hornet, a blonde girl with a single braided bang, with a laid back posture and smile, which was in direct opposition to her two carrier sisters.

"As our most powerful fleet carriers, I and the Admiral decided that you three will be split among the three shipgirl forces." The Captain explains. "I'm sorry for putting you three on the spot right now, but we need you to decide which force your strengths are best lent to."

ENTERPRISE: While certainly not the most advanced carrier in the fleet, Enterprise is for sure the most experienced and well respected carrier in the US Navy, if not the world. Being one of the earliest ships to come back, Enterprise is one of the fleets prized veterans.

Midway: Only recently being allowed to participate in combat operations, Midway lacks the experience of most other carriers, but makes up for it in the sheer technological might at her command, such as early jet fighters and the feared V-2 missile.

Hornet: One of the more infamous carriers on the fleet, Hornet has traditionally served alongside her sister Enterprise, but takes a rather unique approach to carrier operations, opting to employ the use of B-25 bombers rather than the traditional fighter-bombers. This gives her plane complement the highest raw firepower of any carrier shipgirl.

Supporting Hornet because While Midway should be staying back due to her lack of experience, Enterprise should be leading the attack. With how Hornet usually deploys with the Enterprise, that means we should take Hornet along with us so that we can Escort the landing forces and join up with the Enterprise as we arrive. This way, they get to fight properly together again, and everyone is at the right place they need to be.

Also, it's probably best that the Landing forces gets the close air support support they need in the form of the Heavy anti-ground firepower that the B-25 can dish out. Bomb all of the defenses!

We're going to be escorting amphibious assaults against a hardened target with likely a lot of AA and the Abyssals' best air defenses. We will likely need the early jet fighters and V-2 to bust up enemy fortifications and to help keep the landing sites clear of Abyssal ground reinforcements.

Enterprise and Hornet on the Main Assault and Blocking forces would benefit greatly from their experience. Especially the Blocking Force, since that's going toe-to-toe with enemy reinforcements.

"I'll go with the Escort Force!" Hornet raises her hand fast as lighting. "I'm guess my bombers will help out the Marines the most!"

"An excellent point." The Captain nods.

"I suppose I'll join in on the main assault." Enterprise smiles. "I'm rather comfortable working with Iowa and North Carolina, after all."

"I suppose that just leaves the Blocking Force for me." Midway concludes. "I won't disappoint!"

"Good." The Captain nods. "More specific mission details will be distributed to your task force leaders in the coming days. All shipgirls participating in this operation will be removed from patrol rotations. so I suggest you take this time to best prepare. All of you are dismissed."

With that, the gathered shipgirls begin to exit the room and disperse. However, you can still feel the tension thick in the air. There was so much fishy with this planned attack, due to its rushed nature, and everybody could feel it.

"All right, Wren, was it?" Portland sighs as she approaches the Fletcher, arm outstretched. "Can you please give me my glasses back?"

"Hmmmm, okay." Wren grins, "IF YOU CAN CATCH ME!"

And just like that, Wren takes off, with Daly and Luce following close behind. Portland just lets out a deep sigh before firing up her own engines and dashing after them. You could help but chuckle at the scene.

"So, what should we do now?" San Diego asks, her arms crossed. "Since Portland isn't here, I should speak in her place and suggest that we focus on drills."

"Booooooring." Johnston rolls her eyes.

"Maybe we should at least coordinate things with Hornet." White Plains suggests.

"I think we should go and see how our refits are progressing." Heerman shrugs.

"A-actually, I wanted to see what kind of foreign ships would arrive!" Anna chirps as her hair antenna twitches. "I-I think a foreign reinforcement flight is coming in right now!"

Meh, drills are boring, the progress on the rigs won't change regardless of whether or not we visit. Meeting the newbies could be useful, but I'd prefer we meet up with hornet to get to know each other better and to work better together.

"Come on, let's go then!" You grin as you grab Anna by the hand again and pull her along. Johnston, Heerman, and White Plains follow you, while San Diego pauses for a brief second as she tries to decide between following you or chasing after Portland. She eventually chooses the former and follows close behind you.

"So, Anna, you got any idea who it is?" You ask her as you make a beeline for the airstrip.

"No, it's strictly classified!" Anna shakes her head. "Everything's being referred to by code so I can't confirm who's on it!"

"Guess we just gotta see them in person." You shrug.

"I wonder who it could possibly be." Heerman muses.

"Maybe It's the Canucks!" Johnston smiles. "I always heard great shit about them!"

"I wouldn't be opposed to seeing Germans or British." San Diego says with a slight smile.

"It would be very awkward if they were Japanese, though." White Plains frowns. "What happens if the ARE?"

"Eh, that war was a long time ago." You shrug. "We'll only make it a problem if they still think it is."

"How mature of you." San Diego giggles. "If only Portland were here to see it."

"Pffft, over my sunken hull." You roll your eyes.

"Hey! Hey The plane is landing!" Anna points frantically in the air as an Air Force C-130 lands at the airstrip.

"Just in time!" You cackle as you wave the other girls forward. "Let's go!"

You little group makes its way to the airstrip, which was a veritable hive of activity as an endless stream of planes came down either to unload supplies or personnel. Anna points to one particular plane, noticeably set some distance away from the others.

"That's the one!" She squeals.

All of the surrounding personnel and guards are too busy minding their own duties to bother or stop you, and you reach the landed C-130 with no issue.

Coming down the open ramp, you see...

You see two ships bearing the Royal Canadian Navy crest disembarking the C-130. Just two? Well, you suppose it was much better than having zero ships. From what you could tell, it was a tall, blonde light cruiser and a shorter, red headed destroyer. The cruiser had a gentle, maternal air about her, not too dissimilar from Enterprise. The destroyer seemed a bit more... intense? The kind of ship that's seen it all and more.

"Oh my, a welcoming party!" The light cruiser's smile is bright to rival the morning sunrise. "Hello, I'm Ontario, and this here is Haida!"

"Yo." Haida says simply, arms crossed.

"Ah well, I wasn't expecting to hand these out so early, but you can have some of my homemade maple bars!"

Ontario then unwraps the large box she's carrying, revealing what looked to be a dozen large doughnuts covered in a thick coat of maple syrup and topped with bacon.

They looked GODLY. Just as divine as the goddess that made them.

"I'm not sure if you Americans like this sort of thing though...." Ontario laughs nervously.

Yeah... these Canadians were all right, in your book.

Probably not anytime soon. The nationalists would throw a fit if they found out she was sent on a US op.

Why, not our side, of course.

Well. There's only one response to that.
