You are Adrian Brown, a twenty five year-old third-year medical student living an otherwise normal American life in search of employment. That was until you woke up inside a direct and demon-infested hospital with four other victims of short-term memory loss. Together, the five of you managed to somehow survive by negotiating with demons and defeating those that were not so amicable. And upon escaping, the all of you realized that it wasn’t as simple as that.

Task Force 666 a multinational organization dedicated to combating hostile demons and those that would use them for ill intentions. And the hellhole you just went through? That was your ‘job interview’, one that you passed with flying colors. When properly offered employment as an agent among the ranks, you accepted without too much hesitation or second thoughts. Duty to humanity and whatnot.

You are now a Devil Summoner in the service of the Task Force, and the de-facto leader of East Coast Operations Rookie Team Three. It is your duty to protect mankind from all threats involving the demonic, but how you choose to carry out your orders is entirely up to you. The choices you make shall not only affect those around you, but the fate of the entire world itself…

Now that you’ve had the proper amount of time to think about it, it just suddenly hits you. There’s an unconscious demon strapped to the side of this stranger’s boat, and is just as likely to wake up whenever its resistance powers through the spell, or you run out of headache pills for Napaea. At this point, it’s somewhat of a tossup between the two.

Still, you should probably do something about the demon before you get into the harbor proper. It’s getting late, quite late considering that the only trace of the sun is a slight sliver of light. The deep blue hue of evening twilight is rapidly approaching, which makes things easier in terms of keeping a low profile.

Fishermen love to talk. And it’s better to be safe than sorry than to have tongues wagging. You only have so many uses of Mnemosyne before Alger gets irritated.

“Okay, here’s the plan,” You say to the team in the cabin. “We’ll leave Barnes and Davidson in the hands of the paramedics. They should be able to put two and two together and come up with three. Murdock went out to get his friends back, and we just happened to tag along for the ride."

Fitz nods. “Sounds reasonable enough, but I ain’t stayin’ around to play ‘question twenty’ with a bunch of EMTs again…”

“Which is why we’re going to do is meet up with MacKay at the docks. He should be there when we drop anchor. Before we head out, we’ll let the EMTs know about our half-drowned passengers. Then our immediate priority shifts to…”

Lawrence Brady

Age: 24 [Born September 8th, 1991]
Gender: Male
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 168 lbs.
Eyes: Light Green
Hair: Light Brown
Race/Ethnicity: Caucasian (British)

Division: East Coast IV
Commander: Landon Alger
Team: Rookie III
Roster: Active Field
Psyche: Stable

>Hunched over a laptop, the sound of fingers rapidly striking the plastic keys accompanies the tin-can rattling of the spinning hard drives.
>The faint sound of British rock and roll comes muffled from the headphones firmly secured to his ears.
>Completely focused on whatever job he’s working on, the young man only gives you a brief nod at your arrival before turning back to the bright screen of the computer.

General: Despite his American birth certificate, Brady has spent a majority of his childhood years in several countries due to his father’s job with the British consulate. More than anything else, he inherited his father’s fascination for worldly cultures, as well as his strong London accent. Eventually, the family settled down in America, where Brady would go on to major in Computer Sciences. Prior to his employment in the Task Force, he worked for the University of Maryland in their IT department.

Personality: In spite of his somewhat obnoxious and “British” sense of humor, Brady gets along well with his teammates and (most of his) superiors. He is laid-back, and prefers to take a supportive role during field drills or missions, whether it’s with a sniper rifle or with his COMP. Sometimes, he will display some mild signs of OCD whenever his workspace is tampered or altered without his permission.

I need a better picture for Brady...

“…hiding the damn water horse currently snoring in the back of the boat,” You conclude with a dismissive gesture to the bound demon. “I’m equally worried of it waking up and transforming and/or rampaging, as well as it being seen by a civilian. Mnemosyne doesn’t grow on trees.”

Brady makes a ‘tch’ noise. “Considering the fact that it’s about the size of an actual bloody horse, if not bigger, that’s not going to be an easy job.”

“Yeah, I know. I’m kind of hoping on the fact that when we bring out Barnes and Davidson, everyone’s gonna be too busy kicking a fuss over them for us to make off with the demon.”

“I would normally suggest forcing it to transform into a human to try and make off with it easier,” Victoria points out, “But, there’s the risk of it turning into that albatross thingy and flying off to escape. And considering what we’ve seen, I have no desire to experience another phenomena like that ever again.”

“Damn right,” Fitz shudders. “That’s the kind of shit that keeps people up at night. Hits all my fuckin’ nope buttons.”

“Right. Here’s what we’re gonna do…step one, drop off our passengers at the main dock. Step two, move the sleeping demon out of the boat. Lham Dearg should be strong enough to give us the boost we need to get it out of there.”

“Okay, and then…?”

(cont.)
>>
You point towards a thumbtack on the map at least a good five miles away from the main dock. “That’s Murdock’s private berthing area. I talked to him earlier, and he said we could use it to stow the demon as long as we pay for any damages it may incur.”

Brady whistles. “That’s quite generous for a man who just so willingly went with us to go hunt a demon on the open ocean…”

“I know. It’s odd, and there’s something about Murdock that’s ringing all sorts of alarm bells. Shrugged me off when I tried pressing the issue about something that happened a few weeks ago.”

“Great,” Victoria mutters. “Just what we need. More. Secrets.”

“I don’t like it either, but we don’t exactly have the luxury of options. We’ll check in on him later, if that makes you feel any better.”

>Murdock’s boat eventually pulls into the main harbor, with a tarp covering the demon.

After a few moments of confusion and passing on the buck towards Murdock, someone has the sensibility to call 911. With the return of the two fools, the fishermen seem perfectly alright to let Murdock head back towards his boathouse.

Solidarity at its finest. Did them a solid, after all. They look out for each other. And that’s good enough for them.

>MacKay as rejoined the party!

“You will not believe the day that I’ve had,” he exhales deeply as the boat starts merrily chugging along the inner waterway. “It was quite the experience…”

“You’re preaching to the choir, MacKay…erm, no pun intended,” Brady assures the man with raised palms. “Considering what we’ve went through, it’s a miracle that we aren’t at the bottom of the ocean…”

(cont.)
>>
Victoria rolls her eyes. “Don’t listen to him. He’s just overexaggerating. Besides, he didn’t even get off of the boat…”

>Murdock’s boat eventually pulls into his private docking spot.

With ropes and anchors tied and sunken into the water, everyone takes a collective sigh of relief. Extra binds are tied and knotted around the monster, with a makeshift gag made of granite restraining the demon’s mouth. Only an idiot would’ve been able to get hurt by it at this point.

But just to be sure…

Okay, enough is enough. Seriously. It just adding up correctly. Too helpful, has something to hide about a past event, and is generally taking things very well in stride in spite of, you know, fucking demons. What the hell’s up with that?

You take a deep breath in, exhale and then say, “Murdock, to be blunt, you’re very, very calm for someone who’s just come to face to face with a demon. You know what this thing is, to the point where you know where it comes from. The Scottish Highlands.”

“Aye, any sailor worth his salt knows a great deal about the ocean and her monsters, fictional or fact, laddie” he states with a sly grin. “This is nothing more than a coincidence, I assure you.”

“He’s got a point, dude,” Brady interjects. “Most folks would be screaming like on the beach earlier today. Not you, though. You’re too damn calm about this whole thing.”

“Well as far as nasties go, this isn’t the worse one I’ve had to tussle with in my many years of fishing.”

Fitz looks like she’s about to pop a gasket, and Victoria and MacKay’s seemingly infinite patience seems to be fraying under Murdock’s condescending tone. It isn’t friendly or good-natured anymore. It’s the tone of a man who knows something, and is deliberately keeping you in the dark.

+1 to Light!

“Okay, okay, let’s all take a deep breath before we lose our heads,” You raise your hands in a placating manner, making a side-eye to Fitz in the process. “Look, we can just sit here all night and measure our dicks, but that isn’t going to accomplish anything. All we’re going to do is get angry and risk the lives of more innocent people in the process.”

Fitz seems to have caught your gesture, and slides into the bad-cop routine you’ve decided to enact. “Obstruction of justice is a real nasty crime to be hit with, dipshit. And I’m already in a bad mood from your terrible sailing. Give me a good reason why I shouldn’t throw you into the water.”

The shit-eating grin hasn’t left his face. Smug bastard. “I’m quite aware that lives are at stake. Isn’t that why we went to go save my dear simpleton of a fishing partner and his idiot friend? We’ve accomplished what we’ve set out to do, and even come back with the monster in tow. I’d say that’s cause for celebration.”

“You are not a part of ‘us’ in any way, shape or form,” MacKay intones darkly. “As far as I’m aware, your culpability only goes as far as driving the boat. You did not help bring down the monster in any way, shape or form.”

“True enough…true enough…truly, life as a mere taxi driver is what I'm now reduced to? Woe is me...”

“It’s not over, though. Killing it isn't going to make the problem go away. Not until we find all the answers and leave no stone unturned. Murdock. If you have something that can help us prevent another life from being lost, then I would very much appreciate hearing it from you.”

>tfw I accidentally gave MacKay redundant dialogue.

The smile immediately drops from his face, and Murdock looks like he aged twenty years within a few seconds. With a self-mocking noise that was half as much a laugh as it was a sigh of exasperation, he pinches the bridge of his nose.

He looks up at you with distant eyes. “Your honesty is very disarming. It’s quite the surprising trait to find in an agent of the Task Force nowadays.”

The looks on your collective faces cause him to laugh uproariously. “Now now, don’t be so surprised! How else was I able to take it all in stride? Were you expecting me to say that I was some kind of demon? That’s real funny there, that is.

“The full name’s Nathan Murdock, retired Task Force operative. Used to work in Europe before I decided to retire and raise a family of my own flesh and blood. Or was, until my sweet header of a wife divorced me within a few months of my return. Stubborn woman, but the truest love of my life.”

“Wait, wait, hold the fuck up,” Brady raises his hand. “You’re…you used to be an Agent? Like…one of us?”

“Aye, lad. Don’t go wearing it out, now. Had my own COMP and demon team and everything. Of course, I had to turn it all in when I left, but I’ve still got more than enough scars on my body as mementos of my career. They seem to be recruiting very young, nowadays…didn’t get sworn in til I was at least thirty.”

Well, of all the things you were expecting to come out of his mouth, this certainly wasn’t one of them. Asshole and smug bastard were never in doubt, and demon was only a fringe theory. But a retired agent here of all places? And during a case? Something was fishy…

But diplomacy is more refined of an art than intimidation. And it seldom burns bridges. “Pardon me for asking, but what’s a retired Devil Summoner doing here of all places?”

Murdock sighs. “I came here to an old home of mine a funeral, lad. To lay one of my flesh and blood into the earth. She’s always been my little princess, even though she’d long grown up without me. My daughter, Brenda. The ex had the courtesy of letting me read at the mass and everything.”

…oh. Well…that’s certainly sad. And no small amount of awkward.

“Erm…my condolences,” You offer. “I’m sorry for your loss.”

“Not half as much as I am for not quitting this godforsaken business sooner. Maybe if I’d left years earlier, I’d still have my wife at my side and my daughter on my knee…” Murdock sighs deeply as he leans against a dock post. “My legacy of a misspent youth…”

Victoria and MacKay make polite nods, while Fitz and Brady look like they’re completely lost. Probably best to redirect the conversation to something more present. “And you just happened to be here when this thing started attacking?”

“Aye. Mighty hard without a demon team to accompany me into battle. Which is why I brought you on without as much as too much hesitation on my part.”

“So is there anything we need to know about this whole water horse problem?”

"These killings aren't random and I think we have a lead that ties them all together. I don't want to kill this thing and have the problem spring up again months later ‘cause the root cause wasn't addressed, you know?"

“Aye, that makes enough sense. But what that girl you mentioned…” That gets a visible reaction from him in the form of a raised eyebrow. “Phi Alpha? I remember Brenda sending photos of herself wearing one of their shirts. Don’t think she actually did an academic year with them, but was with them long enough for them to show up at the funeral. Touched my heart, it did. Before I had to harden it with the start of the attacks."

“Those girls are one of the reasons why I’m off the rocks and my lazy ass. Can’t have a demon munching on them, or anyone affiliated with them. But if you say that the demon brought up blonde hair…it’s a lead well worth pursuing if I were you.”

“I was planning to,” you answe ,“Problem is, I didn’t want to go and just leave the Each-Uisage unattended or unguarded-”

“Oh, don’t worry about that. I’ll watch the monster for ya. Just take care to leave a few of your friends behind with me to stand vigil. I’m strong enough on my own, but demons are icing on the cake. Leave it to me, laddie. Go chase that clue like the dutiful agent ye are.”

She nods sharply. “Okay, you got it. I’ll keep it down until you come back.”

“Understood, bossman," Brady dryly salutes. "Just try not to get any more girls chasing after you, alright?”

“Hardy har har,” you dryly retort before turning your attention to the remaining members of your team. “MacKay, Fitz, you’re with me. It’s time to go find us our elusive blonde.”

“Glad to be of assistance/Hell to the fuck yeah.”

With an affirmative nod to Murdock, the three of you sprint back to the docks as fast as you can. It doesn’t take too long for you make it back to the dock proper, where everything seems to have quieted down. The sirens that you heard earlier must’ve taken Davidson and Barnes to the hospital.

The black Cadillac is still parked in the same area where you left it. Parking lot’s almost empty save for the vehicles with boat towing equipment and those belonging to the shopkeepers.

“MacKay, do you mind driving?” You ask, clambering into the shotgun seat. “I’d do it myself, but my sealegs aren’t quite stable after my close-encounter at the high seas…”

He smiles in understanding. “No problem. Now, how do you suggest we go about in tracking this Miss Madison of yours?”

You don’t even hesitate. Perish the thought of arriving unannounced at a sorority beach house in the middle of the night. That was recognition that you have no desire to ever get, regardless of the possibilities…no, stop it. Bad. Bad.

Implications aside, you’ve got a contact, and you may as well use it. You may as well give her a heads up that you’ll be showing up later. Either that, or she’d know where your next lead was.

You tell MacKay to start making his way out of the beach, and head for the main road. Good enough directions for them to make a quick change of destination just in case. Fitz just leans back against the leather seats with a deep breath of relief.

It doesn’t even take two rings of the dial tone before you hear someone pick up the receiver on the other end. The tell-tale whoosh of hair and skin brushing up against the microphone, and the minute sound of breathing.

You made a good impression, so it’s best to keep it up. “Alyssa, its Andrew. Look, I was looking for-”

“Did you save them?!” A sudden shrill voice blasts into your ear. You instinctively jerk the headset away from your ear, reigning in several vulgarities as Fitz casts a cursory eye in your direction. The familiar-sounding voice continues to ramble on in a rushed and frantic pace.“Did you save them? Please! You…you need to tell me! I…I can’t…not knowing…ah…”

Yeah, it wasn't Alyssa. Guess he thought she got it back from whoever took it, and it never crossed his mind that she didn't. Oh well. His mind is quite taxed from this morning's events and the incident at sea.

Oh shit. You completely forgot. The last time you tried calling her, someone else had picked up the phone. And that last time, someone had begged for you to save Barnes and Davidson from their fool’s errand of hunting a demon.

Wow. And you thought that Alyssa had her phone back. Shit. If she doesn’t have her phone, then who the fuck is calling you?! It has to be someone connected to the case, but you can’t tell. There’s something muffling the voice. A piece of cloth, maybe? Your siblings played that game a lot way back when.

But you digress. There’s more pressing things to worry about.

You sit ramrod straight in your seat as your eyes narrow and your voice drops into a serious near-growl. “Aside from a few scratches and too much water, Barnes and Davidson are gonna be alright,” You say. “But that isn’t the problem here. What’s problematic is that I expected to have Alyssa answer the phone. You are not her, for the second time. Who are you? Where is Alyssa and why do you have her cell phone?”

“Oh, thank God,” the voice whimpers in relief. “ThankGodThankGodThankGodThankGod, ohhh thank you Jesus! I...oh, I…I don’t know-”

“I’m not God, and neither am I Jesus,” You bluntly tell her. “But you know me already as Andrew, so I think you have me at a disadvantage here.”

It’s probably a good idea to lay off the pedal for a bit. Even MacKay is giving you a weird look from the rear-view mirror mounted on top of the windshield. Yeah. Probably best to go gently with this one.

“Look, who are you? And why have you been contacting me? I can’t ignore the fact that you stole Alyssa’s cellphone to do it, but you’ve got some kind of good reason to do it. If you have a problem of some sort, I can help you with it. But I can’t do that unless I have your name.”

The voice hesitates. “Ah…I…erm…but…”

“It’s now or never, kid.” That’s not true, but it’s probably best to expedite for the sake of time. The demon isn’t going to remain asleep forever. Sorry stranger, but the lives of your team outweigh your immediate discomfort.

“…okay, fine!” The voice cries. For a few seconds, all that dominates the headset is the noise of tape being ripped off of a surface, and the rustling of cloth being pulled away. When it’s over, a half-irritated, half-morose voice. “…it’s me, M…M-Madison, okay?! We…erm…met at the beach this…and…oh fucking hell…I was the blonde bitch, alright? Pleasedon'tbeangry...”

That almost gets you to drop the phone. Is…is this for real? Are you being punked? Because there’s no way in hell that your primary lead just happened to be the first person to answer the phone for herself. You pinch yourself in the arm. Sharply. Many times. To the point where Fitz mutters “Sawbones, what the fuck” under her breath.

The pain is real enough. And the angry patch of red skin is undoubtedly irritated.

Holy shit. Your prime lead is on the GODDAMN PHONE.

First things first. “How did you know when the Each-Uisage was going to attack?” You demand.

“Barnes and Davidson weren’t being…fucking subtle about hunting a fucking water horse demon when they’re screaming about it at the top of their fucking lungs, mister!” Madison shouts back. It seems that her hesitancy has fallen by the wayside, only to be replaced with the usual crude rejoinder that you saw this morning. You’re not sure whether or not this is an improvement in her dialogue.

Though to be fair, she had a point. It wasn’t as much foresight as much as it was the inevitability of being attacked that made her warn them. Or she remembered enough about Jaws to know that hunting anything in the water was goddamn dangerous as hell.

“Okay, okay, fine. You’ve got me there. But you need to listen to me. Where are you right now? We need to meet up and talk, alright?”

“…you’re not talking about a date, are you?” She asks, with a slight tinge of hysteria in her voice. “I’d take a fucking date with you if it would make a temporary distraction, and you're not that bad-looking-”

You resist the urge to sigh and attract more pointed stares from MacKay and Fitz, who are probably taking this horribly out of context. “I’m flattered, but no. Now that the others are safe, I’m very, very concerned about YOUR life right now.”

“You mean to say that you didn’t kill the demon when you fished out Punch and Judy?!” She shrieks. It’s the loudest she’s been. Like, forever. “What?! I thought that’s supposed to be your job! You, know, like a fucking…demonic Pokémon trainer! You’re supposed to kill the damn thing with your demons!”

>“…I’ve got bad news for you.” [Tell her about ‘threads of sunlight’]

If we say investigation she might think we're snooping her.
>>
>>45810475
>Exactly, so could you tell me where you are now?
>>
>>45810512
She knows we are devil summoners. Might as well go full forward and say that we are government agents that require her cooperation.
>>
>>45810475
>“I’m going to kill it as soon as I finish my investigation.”
The problem unless I get to the bottom of WHY it's attacking it'll just come back stronger and meaner. I don't want to come back a month from now with half you girls dead.
>>
>>45810529
She doesn't know that you're officially "devil summoners of the government". What she does know is that you commanded monsters of your own to fight the monster on the beach. She's a bitch, but she's smart and genre-savvy enough to put two and two together in order to come up with four.
>>
>“…I’ve got bad news for you.” [Tell her about ‘threads of sunlight’]
Look, she knows WAY too much. Something is rotten in the state of Denmark, and she is definitely involved. Besides, she knew that thing was going to attack before. Remember how she didn't have her memory wiped? Well, everyone at the beach did...So where was she?

There are times where you should beat around the bush. Covering for your friends so that they can steal the cookies from the top shelf. Buttering up that prom date before you can get into her dress. Smooth-talking Brady after Victoria and Fitz threw a flashbang at him in the Cocytus bathroom.

Now is not one of those times.

“...okay, stay calm. Don’t panic, but I’ve got some bad news for you.”

>You told Madison that the Each-Uisage was referring specifically to her.

“…and that’s why you need to tell me where you are. You. Are. In. Danger.”

“…”

“…hey? Hello? Madis-”

The sound of something hitting the ground nearly causes you to jump out of your seat. It’s a harsh noise, briefly peaked by the sound of static grain and sound energy causing feedback in your ear. She must’ve dropped her…no, Alyssa’s phone. Either that, or she fainted. Possibly both.

“Madison! Hey, hey!” You urgently shout into the phone. “Madison! I need you to tell me…”

Fitz’s half-closed eyes widen to the size of dinner plates. “No fucking way. You have got to be shitting me…you actually…”

“…Idontwannadie…”

“Madison, listen to me. I’m not going-”

Her haughty demeanor doesn’t break as much as it shatters. “I don’t wanna die!!” You hear her cry desperately. “Please! Help me! I…I don’t…”

Dammit! “I can only help you if you tell me where you are!” You half-shout. “I’m on the road, but I need a location.”

“…Phi Alpha Beach House…attic," her throat is raw, and her voice cracks mid-way, "...attic floor…please....hurry...”

As soon as she finishes reciting the last few digits of the address, you rattle them off to Fitz. In turn, she slams the coordinates into the GPS as fast as she can, and MacKay takes off as fast as Delaware traffic laws allow him.

Fun fact: you can only get approval for members within the Task Force. Everyone else has a non-static label that depends on type of relationship.

>Pixie (Demon): Bestie

Well, first of all there's Kaz rather kazually bringing up that whole relationship thing, which along with that face usually means trouble. Then there's Fritz reaction, and then there's the fact that, by the laws of the SMT universe, the demon WILL break free and try to kill her. That's not even bring up the fact that everytime things look up for us it's back to the shitpile, OR that Lucifer is talking to Alyssa.
>>
