You are Takashi Wakui, a sixteen year old Japanese high school student. In your world, half of humanity possesses a Persona—the corporeal manifestation of one’s personality as a supernatural entity. You had been an unlucky ordinary at first, lacking the potential to summon your Persona. Then the application AETHER was forcibly installed on your smartphone. It sucked you into the nightmarish realm of the Blackened Void, where you fought monsters and awakened your Persona in the process.

You are now the Wild Card of the 22nd Century. You possess the Fool Arcana, giving you the power to draw strength from bonds and wield multiple Personas at once. Already this places you in great danger, as the Fool Arcana is seen as an impossibility by the common masses. Revealing your newfound power to the common world would immediately land your head on a dissection table. To make matters worse, you and several others have been cursed as the Void’s Chosen, fated to traverse the wastelands of the Blackened Void until the end of the game. For what purpose does AETHER exist, what mysteries lie within and how is victory achieved?

“Jesus Christ.” Akikazu says, glancing at the monster with a disturbed look. “That thing is supposed to be fucking terrifying, isn’t it? Now though, it looks ready to keel over and die.”

“Did the Denizens of this Sector do this?” Celeste whispers, her voice shaking. “It’s horrible…”

Fumika summons Moros and performs a brief scan on the monster. It lasts a couple of seconds and soon the Persona is back in its card. “The creature is almost dead. Estimated time left amounts to less than half an hour.”

“Should we heal it or something?” Celeste asks. “We have the mana to spare.”

“There is no telling of the monster’s disposition. It could be a wild beast for all we know.” Fumika notes, staring at the monster. “What is your call, Takashi?”

The more cautious part of you is urging you to run. It’s tempting to obey it. Whenever you look at the monster, an awful sensation overcomes you that makes you want to choke. You want nothing more to grab your team, abandon the beast and flee for the hills. Deep down, you know this is not the right decision. You are the leader of this group, no matter how dysfunctional it is, so you better start acting like one.

You steel your nerves and force yourself to calm down. You sigh.

“Everyone, buff yourselves.” You order. “We’re approaching that thing carefully.”

Rakukaja and Sukukaja is cast. Your team moves towards the scaled beast. It perks up and growls at you. If it were healthy, it would sound magnificent and loud enough to burst your eardrums. Now? It’s like a small dog barking.

Only a few steps remain between you and the monster. So far, it hasn’t attacked you. It’s likely that it can’t even muster up the strength to do so. Celeste reaches out with the smile and the monster hisses in response. She retracts her arm as quick as she can.

“…”

You catch Fumika staring at the monster. “What are you doing?” You ask.

She doesn’t respond. Instead, she reaches out, just like Celeste, and rests her hand on the monster’s head. To your surprise, it doesn’t hiss or bark at her. Instead, the monster stiffens, then its eyes close and it relaxes.

“How curious.” Fumika mutters, looking at the creature. “It seems to react well to my presence. The fact that I instinctively knew this is something that needs to be investigated as well.”

Akikazu stares at it, his brow furrowed. “It’s just like that Laurence guy.” He eventually says.

“What do you mean?” You ask.

“I dunno how to explain it, but I just knew he was a friendly the moment we met.” He responds. “It’s like when you have to pick out sauce bottles from the supermarket and the one of the left is one everything says it the best, but you just fucking know the one on the right is the sauce that will serve you well even though you can’t taste it. You get what I mean?”

“…no?”

“Screw you, man.”

“What Akikazu is trying to say through his terrible metaphors,” Celeste interrupts, causing Akikazu to sneer at her. “Is that Players and Companions must share a kind of bond that’s present even before they meet. Maybe that's why we can summon then, other than game rules of course.”

“So it’s intuition, then. Got it.” You redirect your attention to Fumika. She hasn’t moved her hand from the monster’s head. It making a gentle, rumbling sound. Seems like, that in Fumika’s presence, it’s been made docile. But what now?

“Fumika, do you know how to use Medkits?”

“I have been on numerous missions where gunfire and magic combat was present. To say that I do not know how to use the most basic of mercenary tools is nothing short of insulting, Takashi.” She remarks.

You roll your eyes. “Can you do it or not?” You ask, your tone weary.

She looks at you, then back at the monster. “I assume you want me to apply the Basic Medkit we found to the monster. A good idea, but do you really think that we should be doing this in a wide open space where snipers could easily pick us off?”

She’s got a point. “That’s true…maybe we can use the Trafuri Canister to teleport us all to the first bonfire. We could use its healing aura.”

At the mention of the word ‘bonfire’. The monster perks up. It climbs to its feet and growls. Blood trickles down its hind legs and drenches part of Fumika’s clothing. She barely notices.

“What is it?” she asks.

The monster begins to limp further down the trail. Seeing as you have no other option, you and your team follow it. A couple minutes later, you are brought to a small cave at the side of a cliff face. Neither of the four of you need to say it. It’s the monster’s den. Celeste snaps her fingers and fire appears in her palm. The light reveals that the cave is near empty. There’s a small pile of random garbage present at the very back, which the monster collapses on. A makeshift bed, perhaps?

There’s also a pile of ash in the center of the area, unmoving and innocent. You know what it is, though.

“It’s an unkindled bonfire, which unlike regular bonfires must be lit by the Players.” Fumika says, crouching down to inspect it. “If we light it, the healing aura could provide the monster with vitality and we would unlock another safe zone in the Sector.”

“…but Shadows will swarm us if we do.” You finish the sentence. “Tough decision.”

“Indeed. Think over it as our leader while I provide first aid to the monster.”

You sit down with your back against the wall and think. The Personas you have are Makami, Melchom, Principality and Oni. The unanimous agreement is that the team as a whole will heal the monster. But how will you do so? There are a number of ways you could approach this and eahc one of them comes with its own risks and rewards…

>Light the unkindled Bonfire.
>[Melchom/Sati: Mute Gaze] Silence the monster first.
>[Sati: Rakukaja] Increase the monster’s defense.

If Akikazu can, have him summon Laurence. We're going to need some help.

>>
>>45734376
He can't. Last time we summoned Laurence was six days ago, with Akikazu's stats the cooldown on summoning is a week.
>>
>>45734354
I can agree with this. We tend what we can for it, though we should also set up a line of defense. It's a cave with only one entrance right? Think we can set up a defensive line/ambush point for the waves?
>>
>>45734408
Maybe. I wouldn't trust the Shadows to not be able to ooze in through cracks in the walls, though.
>>
>>45734422
It's why we stick near the center. We can change gears pretty fast if things go pear shaped. So if they are coming out of the walls, we can shift to defend the assault while the others get into formation.

“Celeste, can you increase the monster’s defense?” You ask. “That way he won’t feel as much pain.”

“Sure.” She summons Sati and casts the spell three times on the monster. Grey aura coats it and it lets out a low growl. Fumika pats its head and it calms down again.

“Okay, everyone, listen up.” You say. “We’re going to light this bonfire. This is for two reasons, to heal the guy over there…” You jerk your thumb in the direction of the monster, “…and for the extra safe zone. Shadows are going to come at us and we need to fend them off for sixty seconds. Celeste and Akikazu, you guys take the front entrance.”

Both of them nod. “You?” Akikazu asks.

“I’m going to heal everyone with Media. Principality has it. This way we can heal the monster faster and I’ll be able to support you two.”

Celeste smiles. “He’s like a little puppy. Well, a gigantic one with rippling muscles and acid spitting techniques, but a puppy nonetheless.”

Akikazu grunts. “He better not fucking try and eat us once we’re done.”

“I don’t think there’s going to a problem with that.” You look towards the back. “Fumika, do you have any objections?”

“I will be providing area analysis with Moros.” She states. “It seems I do not need to make contact with the beast to comfort him.”

You clap your hands together. The sound echoes throughout the cave. “Then let’s get to it.”

You reach down for the unkindled bonfire as the rest of the team scrambles for their places. “Agi.” You whisper and the flame bursts to light in your hand.

“Is everyone ready?” You shout.

“Yep!”

“Yeah.”

“Affirmative.”

You press the flame down on the coals. The fire spreads. In no time at all they are burning hot and red. In the distance, pools of darkness form and Shadows climb out of them. They converge towards the cave entrance. You hear the unsheathing of Celeste’s rapier and the weighty clunk of Akikazu’s sledgehammer.

“Here they come!”

Both sides at the cave entrance rush forward as the tarot card of Justice is crushed in your palms.

The Shadows are relentless. They assault your two friends with jets of electricity, hails of gunfire and torrents of fire. But they hold their ground. Celeste, in particular, is having a good time. She dips in and out of the mob, her rapier slicing and stabbing, as graceful as a professional dancer. A Shadow tries to grab her. She ducks to side, swings her blade and cuts neatly into its neck. It dies straight away. Fire bursts around the arena, enveloping her foes. She smiles, her eyes shining like twinkling stars, and goes for another stab at a nearby Maya.

Come to think of it, didn’t Kanami say something about how Celeste had fought a few battles in the Battlegrounds since your duel with her? She has scored two wins and one draw against random opponents, if your memory serves you correctly. Maybe you need to accelerate your training or she'll surpass you.

Her fluid movements would be mesmerizing, if it weren’t for the fact that you were busy squeezing mana into healing spells as fast as possible, like an impatient kid trying to get the last drop of toothpaste out of the bottle.

“Come at me, you shitstains!”

Akikazu’s shouting also helps. A volley of spells and skills hits Ubelluris at full force. Akikazu’s only response is to shrug off the middling damage, smirk and command the earth god to slam the offending Shadows into the ground.

Behind you, Media does its job on the monster. Bit by bit, the metal shards eject themselves out of the monster’s body and fall to the ground. You wince. The way the pieces slide out of the flesh sounds painful and is probably a thousand times worse to be actually experiencing it. It thrashes around and howls, only to be comforted by Fumika’s touch. This process repeats itself for each cast. Throughout the din, Fumika hasn’t said a single word. All she sees is the pain-struck beast in front of her.

“Shit, a Panzer!” Akikazu shouts. You freeze up. You hear the grinding of tank treads. The cave begins to shake…

The grenade lands squarely on the Panzer’s mask. It halts, as if staring down at the beeping electrically-charged ball of death resting on its bonce. The grenade cheekily flashes once. Twice. Then the explosion goes off. Miniature arcs of lightning surround the Shadow. The gears inside it spin and clank together, stuck. If it had a mouth, it would no doubt be screaming to loud the heavens above would’ve heard it.

“Now!” As one, you, Celeste and Akikazu unleash everything you have at the Panzer. Bursts of flame, blasts of wind and solid punches assault the Panzer as one.

“Hellfire!”

Blue fire rains down, setting the Shadow ablaze.

>10 seconds remaining.

“Cruel Attack!”

The front plating caves in.

>5 seconds remaining.

“Garula!”

The wind whips, it pierces.

Behind you, the bonfire detonates. A searing light devours the area, turning your vision white. You hear Celeste’s cries of shock as you struggle you shut your eyes and prevent the incoming wave of blindness. The heat is incredible. The monster is roaring. You don’t know what Fumika is doing.

It’s silent now. The bonfire has been fully kindled. You enter the cave and slump down next to sit, letting out a grateful sigh as the healing aura surrounds you. Celeste and Akikazu are quick to follow.

“Good work, everyone.” You grin. Celeste raises her hand for a hi-five. You take it. Akikazu rolls his eyes and turns away, grumbling.

“Victory is ours.” Fumika says, standing up. Behind her, a fully-healed monster follows. “Shall we go outside?”

You, your fellow Players and the monster gather at the entrance. The air is cold and the sky above is layered with toxins, but you’re riding high on your victory. You inspect the monster again. It snarls at you. You try and ignore it.

“Its wounds are mostly gone, but its scales are still pale.” You say. “Is it sick?”

“Yes.” Fumika confirms. “To put it briefly, it’s suffering from cancer brought on by radiation. As a result, it’s lost a great deal of its former strength. Even so, it’s not to be underestimated. You would lose, Takashi, if you tried to fight it one-on-one fairly.”

Akikazu glares at it. “It better be our ally.”

“Good question. I’ll ask it.” Fumika turns to the monster. “Will you assist us? In return, we may find a way to cure you of your illness.”

The monster, sitting on its hind-legs like an obedient dog, lets out a small, shrill whine.

“I’ll take that as confirmation. There, problem solved.”

“Yeah,” Celeste pipes up. “But what is its name?”

“Another good question.” Fumika says, contemplating. “Anyone have suggestions? I am open to anything, as long as it isn’t too hard to pronounce over official transmissions.”

You eye something carved into the monster’s ball and chain. Three numbers are there. A one, another one and lastly a four.

“How about 114?” You suggest.

“It gives the impression that the creature is part of an experiment.” Fumika gazes up at the monster again. “It certainly is part of ours. Very well, it’s short and simple, so it’s accepted.”

“Seriously?” Akikazu frowns. “I think Toxx would be a better name…”

“No, Akikazu, it wouldn’t.” You say.

“Look at all that shit taste you've got there, Takashi.”
>>
“Hey guys, I think he’s doing something.” Celeste says. “Fumika, you might want to back away.”

The monster, or rather the newly christened 114, appears to have something stuck in its throat. It struggles for a bit, then its cheeks bulge. Alien saliva seeps out of its mouth. You and Celeste take a step back. Akikazu is quick to join you. Fumika, who is by the far least physically active member of the team, does not.

114 then opens its mouth and vomits a foul green sludge. It’s as fast as a tidal wave and almost equally as dangerous. It drenches Fumika entirely. She blinks as the muck runs down her face, oozes into her clothes, stinks up her item bag and covers her shoes. Her nose inhales air smelling like the deepest recesses of a garbage dump. She lifts her hands, which are now more green than pink, and takes a good look at them. As she puts them back down, the slime continues to drip down her clothes. Then she reaches for her head and pulls off the item 114 has dug out from the back of his throat for her. She caresses it, her fingers inspecting the way the object is solid like a brick and yet somehow gelatinous as frog spawn. There is magic there, faint and dormant. Instantly, she understands what it is, and what 114 means to her. She looks at the way the rest of her team is suddenly a good few feet away from her with noses pinched, then back at 114.

“I would appreciate it,” she states, glaring at her Companion with enough daggers to kill the entire JSDF. “If you never did that again.”

114 howls proudly.

>MISSION CLEARED.

Let's see. We were at three C.EXP at the start of the session, we got ten from grinding on the way here, now twelve more. So another fifteen and we'll be able to level up. We should be able to get that in the next dungeon, which will probably happen over the weekend. So by this time next week we'll have D- STRENGTH, and learn Nerve Strike. I think that with that under our belt we should try some dueling, finally. Between Killing Hands, Nerve Strike, Stride and basic Persona Augmentation, we should be able to make a good showing of ourselves.

Thread finally over. Things are starting pile up, one by one. Will they start tumbling down? Or will you wreck them yourselves? In any case, it will be interesting to watch.

Thanks to everyone who produced OC for the quest. It's one of the reasons why running this quest is so worthwhile.

Part 5 continues smoothly. There will be lewds. There will be dramas. There will be teenagers clumsily coming to grips with feelings they don't quite understand. Akikazu might have sex with a turkey, but I haven't decided on that yet. All this, more, and probably less on the next installment. Stay tuned. Tweet tweet.

What does it mean?
Is the usage of the word "forlorn" significant?
Why didn't he reach for the stars?
>>
>>45736267
It's just another iteration of the 4 dying, nothing to worry about.

First is Fumika, the forlorn signifying that these voices are probably echoing in the forlorn abyss.

Second and Third is Celeste and Akikazu, not too sure which one has more prominent parental issues.

Fourth is pretty damn obvious.
>>
>>45736721
Mama and Papa makes more sense for Celeste since she's foreign. She's also got that whole "I wanna be the very best"-thing going on.
>>
>>45736820
but considering what that old lady said about Akikazu feeding his guardians...where are his parents?
>>
>>45736842
The word "Dammit!" in the second one also makes it lean more towards Akikazu than Celeste.
