>>45733704

We are going to start with this region, which is dominated by Blue, Black and Red, containing three tri-color lands which are represented by Castle Sengir, Crosis's Catacombs and a Crumbling Necropolis.

Here's how this will work: Each tri-color land is ruled over by a Legendary creature. You can suggest a legendary creature but it must match one or all of the colors of the land in which it rules.

Each Legendary creature will have three chief lieutenants, or commanders. They may or may not be legendary themselves. Each of them will command an army of one or more lesser creatures (preferably at least three, for variety).

These rulers, commanders and armies will help define the surrounding regions, as the armies spread out and extend their influence while the ruler stays centrally in his/her/its tri-color land domain.

Needless to say, the creatures must all share colors with their rulers/commanders. Since we're dealing with a blue/black/red region, that's all we need to worry about.

Essentially, each tri color land has:

>1 Ruler (Must be legendary; can be 1 or more colors that match the land it rules)
>3 Commanders (May or may not be legendary; do not have to share colors with the ruler but must share them with the land)
>3 Armires comprised of lesser beings (Cannot be legendary) each sharing colors with their commander

For example, let's say we have a ruler who is Blue/Black/Red. His three commanders are all dual-colored; Red-Blue, Blue-Black and Black-Red. They each control an army of creatures, but the Red-Blue commander can only command creatures that are Red, Blue or both.

If the ruler is itself only one color, the commanders do not need to be one color. A pure-black ruler can rule over a red or blue commander, for example.

We are going to start with Castle Sengir, which as we established, is built upon a font of U/B/R mana.

Who is its ruler, commander and what comprises its three armies?

Suggest cards by posting them and discuss with others what you think would be best.

We do not have to restrict ourselves to cards from the game; if you can make your own (or already have) then feel free to suggest them.

Otherwise, let's begin populating the landscape with rulers, commanders and armies!

Remember that this plane is both original and built upon memories of the planes the Planeforger visited, so don't feel restricted in your choice of cards to suggest.
>>
>>45734010

Alternatively, I am considering giving each ruler and each commander an artifact that they wield or use. Perhaps both: the land itself has an artifact, and each ruler and commander has an equippable artifact.

Which do you prefer? I say, the more artifacts, the more variety, the better.

Some possible abilities for the planeforger. Again, just spitballing ideas. While it seems more powerful, the second ability is a gamble. Could be something good. Could just be exiling two lands. Feel free to suggest better abilities. Just no plus loyalty. Only 0 and minus.
>>
>>45735844
>I guess I'm the only one who thinks they don't need the static.
Well I guess the thing is that the static ability of "Slivers have so and so" is pretty much there on all (or most) slivers. so having a version of it that needs to be activated kind of makes it strictly worse. That said I kind of like the abilities that are on these cards, the "colored slivers" thing on the queens is a nice compromise between Sliver abilities targeting "all slivers" and "slivers you control".

also this >>45735284

Hey all. Anon who did the missing land cycles here, and can give some card design help if you like (Phasing and lich are not creature types, costs in an ability have to be separated by a comma, counters need types and Phasing should not be bolded.)
I'd also suggest Magic's existing wizard-king-turned-lich: Nekusar, the Mindrazer. Ideas for Commanders include Nin the pain artist, Dralnu lich lord, and Bladewing the risen. Three liches and a torturer. Would give images but unable rn.

>>
>>45736803
To be honest, we did so much completely new lore and races for the plane I think it would only be fitting to populate it with home brewn legendaries as well, that are rooted in our lore.
On the other hand I'm not really the idea man, but what about a legendary UR mad scientist dwarf, who wasn't content with making weirds and started experimenting to unravel the mystery behind the black skeletons, undeath and where their souls had gone, resulting in URB?
>>
>>45738335
Sure, but just saying, Nekusar never had a home plane defined in the lore.
>>45738117
These both make sense.
>>
>>45738335
>To be honest, we did so much completely new lore and races for the plane I think it would only be fitting to populate it with home brewn legendaries as well, that are rooted in our lore

This is true, but the other part of the lore is that the plane was populated by things that the Planeforger both remembered and made up, so it's not a big deal if we have a combination, honestly.

>>45738356

So, let's for now say that >>45734782 lives at Castle Sengir.

Who are his three commanders?
>>
>>45736442
I was mostly looking at Sliver Queen and Sliver Overlord for inspiration. Those two don't have passives. Just activated abilities and 7/7 bodies. The biggest thing though is very simple: almost too much text if more is put on the card.
Custom Card thread's design reference sheet. >>45702029
>>
>>45738424
>So, let's for now say that >>45734782 lives at Castle Sengir.
>Who are his three commanders?
Skeleton ship for black blue maybe? Ooh, actually, save that for the Lich and make Bloodbeard's commanders vampires or different undead. I'm a big fan of Olivia Voldaren, but she's pretty iconic. Dwarf torturer for red/blue, or a classic mad scientist. And black/blue I suggest a vampire spirit, transcendent and difficult to kill.

I was thinking of a quick idea for sliver lore, what if slivers' within the suddenly self-aware group had names? Not actual single word name-names, but like descriptive piles of phrase, as a very rudimentary means of discerning who is who. Kind of like argonian names honestly.

in reference to the question on shades from last thread, I think the reason that our red ghosty race has been called shades this whole time was kind of basing it off of the canon black shade's mechanic of pumping mana into them to that they become huge for a turn. Considering both that red mana has a ton of cool variants of single turn mana generation and also fitting with the lore idea of "better to burn bright than fade away" it made for a different kind of aggro red. That said, we can always change the type from shades, but I hope they get some utilization, underrepresented faction that they are.

Also, here's a rough idea I had for a skeleton legendary, but I have no idea what its name should be. Idea is that skeletons are kind of an amalgamate hive. This guy however, stands alone, and in doing so is a kind of legend to skeletons, the idea of ascendance into mortal form. Sound familiar? Just like their Deva forefathers!
>>
>>45740562
I'm not sure about making the 3-colored rulers all have legendary commanders. Maybe just one each, but if we set it up so that each ruler is associated with 2 or 3 other legendaries by the end we're going to have way too many legendary creatures.
The ruler should be a mythic legendary creature while the commanders are just rare creatures and those below them would be common/uncommon.
That zombie dwarf barbarian could be a legend, but the selkie assassin should just be a normal creature
>>
>>45740748
Coolies, typing up now, card incoming when I find some art.
>>
>>45740695
I too like red shades rather than turning them into spirit elementals. I think it's totally fine to use a traditionally black creature type for another color.
A legendary skeleton warrior of a giant would be pretty sick.
>>
>>45740802
Okay, trained in the mangrove swamps north of the castle, these assassins serve loyally their new master, having succumbed to the change in their home from it's once lush canopy to it's current putrid decay.
Anything else I should add to the card?
>>
>>45733858
I really really like this. You did a good job making the world look shattered and fragmentary. Are you going to maintain that island density though? It looks good in moderation, but I could see it going overboard.
>>
>>45741154
Exiling a creature for just tap seems ludicrously overpowered to me.
>>
>>45741218
So make it a mana cost or upgrade the selkie to legendary or up it's CC? Then again, it is a trade off, you could attack for 2 poison counters instead of exiling a creature, but it IS an Assassin...
>>
>>45741257
Exiling seems rather white to me. I would make it destroy and make it cost at LEAST three a pop. I would also make it legendary, or remove one of the passives.
>>
>>45741293
3T: destroy is REALLY price for an assassin.
How about this:
Mangrove Breathstealer {3}{U}{B}
Poisonous 2, shadow, shroud
{U/B}{{U/B}{T}: Destroy target creature, it cannot be regenerated.
2/2
Shroud is there to prevent you from pumping it with specific effects; shadow, because assassins that attack generally have a counter to blockers; and Poisonous because that's how I figure Merfolk/Selkies would murder.
>>
>>45735844
Is good, I like the abilities. I would suggest -2 for the second ability.
For the wording on the second ability I would put "Exile the top two cards of your library. You may cast one without paying it's mana cost."
I think the "If able" is not necessary seeing as planeswalkers activate at sorcery speed so any spell should be fine to cast at that time.
The only cards that could be restricted would fall under their own rules like "Can't be cast whenever X or Y"

>>45740695
I love me some skellies, I like this a lot. What would people think about adding a "tap to put a 1/1 black skeleton token onto the battlefield" ?

>>45741154
This is way too powerful. I think it needs to lose one of those abilities. Very cool and flavorful tho.

I don't know if people care about making these balanced and I'm certainly no professional card designer. Just thought I'd share my opinions.
>>
>>45741190
Yeah I was thinking of varying it up depending on the location. for example changing them to rivers or deltas when they're at the edge of the sea. simple lakes if they're small. Its that big patch of blue which is giving me trouble, because you are right. That many little islands might be a little overboard.
>>
>>45741154
Aren't merfolk/selkies supposed to be U/G?

or is this just a regular merfolk and as such U/B?
>>
>>45741500
This is a colony that had the forest/island area become corrupted into swamps and adjusted to survive and serve the master of the castle. Or they were otherwise changed to U/B from U/G.
>>
>>45741464
Maybe make the destroy only target creatures with a certain power or toughness or color? Looks much better though
>>
I don't know if the plane only being the size of the continental US is that big of an issue. Just think of how diverse it is. The majority of the world may have already been eaten away, until only the most prominent region to the Planeforger remains.
>>
>>45741521
We could do a mana ramp Merfolk that works for both U/B and U/G decks that costs Golgari/U.
A Merfolk who is still trying to hold onto the old ways but can only tap for colourless.
>>
>>45741537
3T: destroy is REALLY price for an assassin.
How about this:
Mangrove Breathstealer {2}{U/G}{U/G}
Poisonous 1, shadow, shroud
{U/G}{{U/G}: Place a -1/-1 counter on target creature
2/2
A more traditional selkie colony(U/G) serving the U/B/R master of the castle as scouts and assassins? And changed it from destroy to -1/-1 counters to reflect the name better as they strangle or drown their targets.
>>
>>45741634
I like it
>>
Here is our Selkie(merfolk) Assassin.
>>
>>45741790
Though she isn't U/B as originally proposed, this colony lives in the lake on the western side of the castle, and the Breathstealers, while not generals, do hold some sway over scouting parties and are nearly always found with any selkie trade expeditions.

I imagine Selkies would organize somewhat similar to seals and have locations for breeding grounds that would be watched over by males(or whatever race selkies breed with if they have no males of their own, maybe dwarves?) and those females past breeding age. The young are whelped in these colonies and the older females watch over them and study magic when the young head out to explore and adventure. It is not unusual for selkie maidens who study magic to gain a resistance to it's effects, but some few do experience calamity and are purged of magic, rendering them nearly immune to all it's forms. These unfortunate ones become more and more ghostly, as their essence gradually fades like the plane upon which they live, until they are naught but shadows.

Card advice Anon here, and you've definitely been busy. Exile or destroy on tap should always be ludicrously expensive, colourless costs always come before coloured costs on the top right, use hexproof not shroud, and I'm not sure poison or shadow are mechanics we want in this block. Shadow is okay in theory, but everyone would need to be using it, while poison I think is totally unnecessary. A more fitting on-hit might be mill.
As for the enchantment, again with the not-definitely-in-use thing on Tribal, but the design is sound. Maybe change it to "Enchant Island or Forest"-Drain doesn't actually make lands Islands, remember.
>>
>>45741943
No need to make it a single-gender race for no reason. Besides, making one remnant race entirely reliant on another is just a bad idea.
>>45741634
3 and tap to destroy on a 2 mana creature is still pretty cheap. The closest is royal assassin, which is considered overpowered by modern printing rules, and can still only target tapped creatures(Which allows you to keep stuff out of his range if you like).

Yeah the I flubbed the casting cost. I wanted to give her an ability that wouldn't make her totally unlockable, but I guess Intimadate or a landwalk. Reasoning for poison was to force the choice between attacking or destroying a creature. Though now that she drops -1/-1 counters she doesn't need it.

Tribal was to give it a creature type so it can sack itself to counter.

>Devas are the twisted souls of mortals who dreamed of ascending the physical plane to become beings of light. Once normal people, they have been transformed into strange beings that stalk the ruins of their old temples.
>Horrified at the state of the world since the death of the Green Sliver Queen, they sought an escape from the widespread suffering and poured all their resources and hope into forbidden knowledge.
>The culmination of their research led to the death of their entire culture. The ritual that they hoped would help them transcend their physical form instead warped their bodies and minds into alien abominations.
>Their form combines geometric shapes, vaguely humanoid bodies, and abstract interpretations of living creatures to create a diverse race of surreal beings that are incredibly violent to all non-Deva lifeforms. It seems that only the Gargoyles are ignored, but no one alive knows why.

Here's a cat shade everyone. I really liked the idea of making little one hit combat units that you could store up, and so this card would be a means of getting an absolute ton of them, at the expense of a massive amount of mana or resources. That said, I doubt this is balanced.

Man, making these are really fun.
As a clarification, Marrow Fen is the name I've given to that big stretch of swamps in the top right corner. I'm thinking that it's a place where due to wildlife fleeing the collapse of the plane, you get a lot of large skeletons ending up in the swamp, as the creatures collapse and die on the run. Maybe there can be some kind of artifact, or Deva ruin there that the Skeletons are really interested in, so that's what the caretakers do when they aren't helping patch up new skeletons that arise from the swamp.

Updated. I like the Caretaker to be pretty non-combative, but giving it some attack fits unless I make it a bigger blocker.

Also, for the dragon skeleton, considering how we have skeletons being big nito-esque blobs of bone, what if the dragon skeleton is actually a bunch of smaller skeletons having formed the shape of a big ass dragon? Also, we totally need the skeleton capital, wherever that may be to have some play on the name Golgotha.
Anything that is both biblical, so it links to the Deva, and translates to "place of the skull" has to be the spookiest place ever.

The "if able clause" is for if you end up with something like two lands, two spells with no legal targets, or a mix. Then you just have two cards in exile.

While chatting with some friends over dinner, we came up with a pretty cool idea for either another 5-color or true-colorless walker. Starts with 6 or 7 loyalty, and like that guy, only goes down. The twist is that it's +0 would be "Exile ~ with two time counters on it. It gains suspend."

>>45736442
Thought up a decent lore thing for the slivers to still have their thing. It's stated that they exist to do something with the plane's mana. Bind or regulate. The abilities of those queens could be representative of how they do that. Surges of mana are spread to a queen's progeny, being the activated abilities. Passives on the swarms could be them circulating and diffusing that energy among each other.

tl;dr: Slivers are surge protectors.

I haven´t really thought about Dorf McDorfington. I think he is a dorf Archeologist gone mad trying to find out how the ritual the Deva fucked up, could possibly save all the dorfs (disregarding the fact that it doomed the deva)
>>
>>45766317
I actually wrote up an old U/R planeswalker who's whole deal was messing with the suspend/fading/time bullshit abilities. I people want, I could post it, though in retrospect it's kind of an unbalanced pile of shit.

I see slivers as a crazy combination of surge protectors, grounding wires, and excess energy capacitors. They keep the plane from devolving into a big ball of mana via many little ways. The Queens then are like a central power supply, or a CPU. Well, kind of a horrifying hybrid of both. I don't actually know enough about electronics to paint a very clear picture.
>>
>>45766499
Honestly, I bed good ol Dorfy doesn't even know that the Deva are the race who's ruin's he's looking through. As far as he knows, the mortal Deva managed to actually transcend the plane and attain true ascendance.
Also nice card. I like it.
a possible way we could have Dorf McDorfington's name not be nonsense too is having Dwarves have a hilariously thick accent. Dorf McDorfington is a bad transliteration of something like Tu'arv NacDuorvinton

>>
>>45766689
also lets not forget the dwarves in this setting are very Jack Kirby inspired. We can give them names more in the crazy superhero/villain vein as long as they're suitably dwarfy.
>>
>>45766499
Neat card but I'd tweak it a bit
Like, for starters I'd make the cost 1R
And also make it an instant.
And while we're at it change the effect to "Price of Progress deals damage to each player equal to twice the number of nonbasic lands that player controls."
And the flavor text to something like.... I don't know "Man versus nature is not a fair fight."
And raise the rarity to uncommon
And print it in exodus
>>
>>45766719
That sounds good, they'd be like this planes equivalent of WWI fighter plane pilots with over-the-top names.
>>
>>45766770
actually thinking about it, ridiculous WWI names could be a good starting point for Dwarven names here. Stuff like how Mannfred von Richthofen was called the "Red Knight" and Eddie Rickenbacker was the "Ace of Aces".

What if we made Ascendance Engine a flip card? One side is the engine which ascends things until as a plot point in the story of the plane, it has a catastrophic meltdown and flips into an enchantment that warps and phases the entire board in crazy ways. Maybe have its flip trigger as after it ascends a certain amount of creatures, or something.

>>45767092
Exiles creature cards, then eventually flips and brings them back as Devas on your side sounds likely to me.

As for when to have phasing kick in...

I think something like...

1. have everything phase out, the devas pop in.
2. everything phases in, devas phase out
3. Deva's phase in, everything phases out.

So that every other turn, there's nothing on the field but land, newly cast permenants. and devas.

Also, this should definitely say "all OTHER nonland permenants have phasing, or everything would lose it when Ascension Engins phases out."

I gotta say, this is fitting for a story event. During whatever actual plot we have, Dorf McDorfington finds the Ascension Engine, and being the crazy dorf that he is, instead of testing it he immediately convinces a bunch of dwarves to try it out. Cue massive cascade of energy, and the destruction and phasing of the landscape. Hopefully with our protagonists running their asses off trying to get away from it.

Ooh, we could have an Ascended Dorf McDorfington as a legendary?
>>
>>45767646
still needs to say "all OTHER nonland permanents," unless you intend for this artifact to also phase, meaning that the turn it phases out, everything loses phasing including itself since it stops existing. and thus things never proc to fade in and it all stays faded out forever.

>>45768327
better

still turns everything into a stalemate of sorts, where the only thing that matters is creature count.
but I like that it kind of shunts everything into this ethereal spiritual battle nobody material can even participate in. Very Revelations feeling.

I came up with some more lore and some names we can use.
Dogan is the name of the Dwarf Artificer.
The Stonecutter is his ship.
Zinoxe is the name of the people that became the Devas. Sort of a play on the Ziox Civilization from The Final Sacrifice.
>Dogan the Digger was born deep underground to an isolated group of dwarves who had gone there whole lives without seeing the surface.
>The fortress had been sealed away from the surface world for generations, but Dogan's thirst for knowledge lead him to leave his fortress at a young age with the help of a digging machine.
>Since then, he has fostered technological havens and worked to convince the isolationists to return to the surface in order to make a difference in the world rather than just hide from it.
>Dogan's ship, the Stonecutter, can both fly through the air and burrow through the earth with a massive drill. With it, he searches for lost civilizations and tries to make sense of the the past in order to better understand why the world has become so messed up.
>His latest research has lead him to investigate the ancient temples of the Zinoxe civilization which existed long ago.
>From the hieroglyphs Dogan has found in their sunken sepulchers he has determined that the Zinoxe were an incredibly advanced civilization of religious scholars.
>Their ancient texts suggest they were all working together towards a common goal, but there are a number of symbols Dogan has never been able to identify.
>Nevertheless, he continues his search to understand where the Zinoxe went and what they left behind.
>>
>>45771502
I kind of read Zinoxe as Zinogre when I first saw it, and now I cant stop picturing the Deva per-ascension as using white electricity based spells, ala Dark Souls' Sunlight Spear.
>>
>>45771547

>>
>>45771558
>>45771547
Perhaps their goal was to "become beings of Light" in a sense, but obviously they fucked that up colossally.
The Zioxe's ascension was an attempt to shed their mortal forms to escape the horrors of the world and became horrors themselves.

The second and third parts can possibly be combined into one line. "Whenever a creature phases in or out, its controller adds one mana of any color to his or her mana pool and puts an instability counter on Ascension Engine."

Also here's a common 1-drop. Somebody who phased out with the land.
>>
>>45765856
Hey, two things here: First off, we don't print lands that can't at least tap for colourless on their own anymore. It has to have some form of innate mana generation. Second, a 1/1 with tribal each turn is really, really, really strong for a land-compare Kher keep. Maybe
[B], when target non-skeleton creature dies this turn, put a 1/1 black skeleton creature token onto the battlefield.
>>
>>45767082

>>45768640
I like the new ability, definitely.

Also laying in my support for WBR ascended Dogan, realising that in trying to save his people he's doomed the plane, and his people with it.
>>45772934
I'd make it an artifact creature-He's the one with colours, not it. Flying, can scry 1 -> You draw a card if your tap card is an artifact, and you can pay and discard an artifact to make an opponent Drain 1 as he mines straight through their mana base for relics.
>>
>>45768640
Oh, and you need to declare colours on the angels if we want them to be the black-white Devas. Although, now I'm thinking, what if the Deva's ascension mechanism was based on how the Catfolk could form shades when they died? If its an old, protected knowledge of the catfolk that the pre-deva acquired, adapted, and utterly screwed up.
>>
>>45773631
I mean, it can tap for 1B, there's just an intermediary skeleton step, that also allows you to sacrifice more skeletons to make more black, and the option as well to just keep the skeleton.

I think it's a really neat concept, frankly.
I agree it definitely needs to be costed more though. just coming in tapped clearly is not enough.
>>
>>45773775
I get what you're saying, but its a flat rule: All lands since before Weatherlight have to be able to tap for mana without an outside cost. The closest we've had to that is the slowlands which don't untap the next turn.
>>
>>45773721
shades are meant to live a bit longer, to protect their relative, and then die.
they wanted more out of it. they wanted to escape death entirely.

that's the black part comes in. the overreaching ambition.

unwilling to just accept its limitations, they tried to twist a wholesome tradition about family into something it was not, an attempt at immortality, and ultimately payed the price for their crimes.

>>45773806
I don't remember the Merit Lage land tapping for mana, did it? What set was it?

Hey guys i've a question and i hope you like to help me bacause the people in other magic threats dont.

After many years of playing magic i finaly started to sort my collection.
Im a casual player so im not only in to extremly strong competitive cards but also in to cards that are playable in non-competitive ways.

My collection is already sorted in colores and raritys, i bought some folders and so on. but i have too many cards to put them all into my folders.

A friend of mine told me i should sort for playables and unplayable cards now and put only the playable playsets and singles into the folders.

but as a casual player now i ask "what is a playable?"... a creature without abilitys for sure. but what about sorcerys, instants and so on?

how would you decide between playable and unplayable if you are in my position?

They could be similar types of magic, but the end result is quite different.
The catfolk learned how to harness the power of their ancestors so that they may continue to defend their struggling tribes. Shades most likely do not possess the personality of the person they once were, but might vaguely share their appearance.
The Deva probably never had a chance to get to know the catfolk since they ascended soon after the world went to shit, but the magic used to summon Shades and the magic the Zinoxe used to Ascend might be similar in a way, but the Zinoxe applied it to living beings and attempted to maintain their memories and personality.
It might have been similar at one point, but the Zinoxe took their magical research too far and turned themselves into monsters on accident.

Re: Shades and Deva.
It could be that the attempted ascension resonated with the cat folk, so now their spirits are bound to the plane as ghostflame. The Deva screwed up so bad their closest remaining cousins (spiritually) can't cross to the next life.
Re:Stonecutter.
It's supposed to be a mining and exploration vessel, maybe with a lab and some workshops. I don't see much hope for giving Mountainwalk, but flying sure. Mana, Tap, or both?
>>
I kind of like it. It shows how the Stonecutter is designed for 'archaeology' read: destroying landscape until you find something useful

RE: Shades and Deva.
I think that the shades are more of a byproduct of the whole ascension process than a direct attempt at it. When the Deva ascended, they fucked over the entire plane's afterlife system. Now, not only do we have the physical remnants of creatures becoming skeletons, but the spiritual bits becoming shades. I think the deal with the catfolk shades is that the catfolk managed to figure out how to enlist the help of or enslave their shades. Otherwise, they'd be roaming natural disasters.
>>
>>45777161
Yeah I wasn't sure about Mountainwalk either, it just seemed like the best option to represent digging at the moment.
The wording of your card is very wonky by the way, but scrying works well. I'm don't think the Stonecutter should be an artifact creature.
>>45777336
Skeletons might also be a byproduct of the Ascension cataclysm.
Seeing as the Ascension happened after the death of the Green Sliver Queen, we still need to figure out how she died.
It was theorized that it was the Black Sliver Queen who somehow killed her, but it could be anything, Maybe a planeswalker managed to find this world and murdered her for some reason?
Or maybe the dwarves did it?
>>
>>45777393
I always thought we had that skeletons were what happened to all the bodies of the Deva when they transubstantiated. They left behind a bunch of corpses in the middle of a big pile of black mana. What else was gonna happen?

I think the reason that we had the Black Queen kill the Green Queen was that the Black Queen is going full sliver Gravemind recently. Instead of a swarm of hive minded slivers, she's decided the skeletons have the right idea, and is absorbing and consuming slivers and in doing so becoming a gigantic, mutable sliver Overmind. Black's theme in this set seems to be kind of unity, but in a innately selfish or ambitious context. It's kind of refreshing from the traditional black single villain deal.

That makes sense to me, though we should have the corpses of the Zinoxe conglomerate into a super Skeleton who commands the lesser ones
>>
>>45778121
Sounds like we have two sources of skeletons. Zinoxe ascension long ago, and then the more recent increase of black mana in this plane following the green queen's death.

Perhaps remove that bit about phasing and then put the first and third sentences on the same line?

That second bit about phasing out is sort of useless.

Deva Dogan would be a particularly savage and destructive WBR Deva. It should come with artifact destruction etb effect to contrast his previous love of artifacts

How about this? Changed things a bit and cleaned up the language. Now Stonecutter grinds through lands looking for artifacts, but it has a mana cost associated with it, to represent resources spent digging.
>>
>>45778235
You got it a little backwards, the Zinoxe ascended after the Queen died because her death caused the Plane to go to shit. Then a Nito-esque skeleton lord rose up and basically cock blocked the black queen from gaining control of the increased amounts of black mana
>>
waffle0708 on deviantart has some good art for planes and stuff.
>>
>>45778604
The ascension seems like something that happened hundreds to a few thousand years ago, while the death of the queen just sounded like something more recent to me.
>>
>>45778249
we figured that sohuld the card transform while everything is phased out it wouldn´t do anything because you can´t exile something that is phased out
>>
>>45778309
Close, but you can't really target a land with drain, its the same vein as sacrifice. Should just be "Target opponent drains 1"
>>45779184
This guy has a point. Could be the skeletons have been written off as a minor pest since the Zinoxe ascension, and its only now Greeny died and the balance was thrown out of whack that they've surged up and revealed themselves as a reasonable power.
>>
>>45779184
>>45779551
It would make sense if the death of the Green Queen not only triggered the rise in power of the skeletons but also brought the Devas into the world. Then no one would connect the Zinoxe with the Deva
>>
>>45780196
Hmm, maybe a slight twist on that-I don't like the idea of the ascension being essentially successful until something else set it off. What if they'd been around ever since the failed ascension, but the mana imbalance has only now made them visible? That way we could also throw in things linked to that.
>>
>>45780509
I think you are onto something. My idea was that the Zinoxe were trapped in the Blind Eternities or whatever and were changed after centuries of surviving there, but then it'd be impossible for people like Dogan to Ascend without disappearing for a long time.
>>
>>45781024
Nah, we could make it work. After all, their activating of the machine the first time didn't cause the plane to leak that much, cause they had their whole civilization preparing for it. He forced it with about 30 dwarves, and instead of a needle-hole in the blind eternities, he tore a machete's worth.
>>
>>45779551
>>45778235
>>45778121
See, I think the deal with skeletons in this setting though is that ALL of them are Nito. You don't get one giant skeleton lord and lots of regular skeletons. It's that every individual skeleton isn't powerful enough or able to hold enough mana to be a skeleton, but together they manage to hold form. We have one legendary skeleton who is a single skeleton, and is considered the skeleton messiah because he is proof that one day they can ascend to mortality and being single beings again instead of clusters of skeleton-minds.

>>45781094
Yeah, Dogan by the time he finds the machine is kind of going that oh-so beloved blue-red crazy, and when he uses the Ascension Engine, he's not doing it in a controlled manner at all. He overclocks it, and ends up blowing the whole thing apart.

>>45778282
Evangelion is actually the total basis for the Deva's from earlier threads. They went for instrumentality, and it backfired in the most spectacular manner. Now we have eldritch angel horrors who speak in geometry and static.
>>
>>45782201
I like that idea that the skeletons are a competing hivemind against the 4 sliver. Perhaps our Not!Nito can breath unlife into corpses all over the plane, necessitating rituals to safely dispose of the dead. The Ghostflame shades could be a way preventing bodies from rising into violent skeletons by cremating them and creating loyal shades instead.
I am not sure if skeletons should be individuals at all except for the most powerful ones besides their Bone Lord.
>>
>>45778309
Dumb question but is there a point to an artifact with flying, that isn't a creature?
>>
>>45783947

>>
>>45783687
>>45782201
I generally like some good ol´ tragedy in a villain´s background.
I was thinking that the whole Ascension thing backfired. Instead of the Zinoxe´s souls ascending they were ripped apart and away from their bodies by the engine. The deva would practically be the remnants of their consciousness and soul eternally damned to existence as something undescribable. Their bodies however died where they stood. Except for one.

He was the one responsible for the Ritual, probably the High priest or chief researcher of their civilization, maybe both in one who can say after so much time. He was the one who fucked it up. He was supposed to be under control of the engine. He tried to make things right, to reattach the souls of his brethren to their bodies. But it was futile.
The effect he got was the complete Sundering of his people. He only managed to scrape together enough of the soul to animate the corpses. But he had to find a way, a way to make things right. For hundreds of years he tried, outlasted in what had been the center of a once glorious civilization and was now reduced to swamps swarming with undead locked in a grotesque parody of "life" in ruined cities.
The Ascension ritual had been borderline Necromancy and he is still using that same energy to hold everything together. He only needs time. Time to make things right again. To make the Zinoxe Empire great again.
Time and test subjects.
He is running out of both.
>>
>>45784948
"If only I could just infuse the devas back into the risen dead, then stitch their souls back together. At least then, they'd be some form of lich or revenant, a complete, if decaying, whole being. But this... this unspeakable atrocity which I have wrought... surely there must be some way... some way to make it right.. I can't... there must..."

>>

>>45785898
All I can picture is a true kind of ascended angel horror. He's probably just an angel, but in the old biblical sense, inscrutable, dangerous, and absolute. However, I want to say that his whole ascended form is the most 'complete' of the deva. After all, even if it works incorrectly 99 out of a 100 times, he can still be the one.

>>45783687
I think skeletons are individuals in a very loose sense. Like, this one skeleton conglomeration that looks like a dragon is an individual, but it's actually somewhere close to about seventy fragments of sentience and meaning tied to that form by black mana and echoes of the ritual of Ascension. Kind of like the Geth, only without really transferring full consiousnesses, because they can't. The probably can add on more bits of thought via adding more bones though. I guess this makes the most eloquent and 'human' skeletons the ones who are absurdly huge, and made of hundreds and hundreds of skeletons, each bit eventually approximating something close to a conventional sentient mind.

tl;dr Nito is the size of of a castle.
>>
>>45783687
Also I like this idea for shades. The influx of red mana doesn't make them controllable, but it makes them emotional, and in doing so makes them a little bit more willing to help and protect. Or in many cases, explode the shit out of something that's trying to kill their charge.
>>
>>45786933
He isn´t supposed to be the highest of the ascended, he is the "Nito" of the skeletons. A conductor of the undead that he left in a state of barely recognizable individuality. His soul and the still working ritual are stepping in for all the parts missing in the dead bodies after the Zinoxe´s mistake seriously screwed with the cycle of life in the plane. He is every single skeleton, shattering his essence to keep his brethren together just like he shattered theirs.
You could even say, he´s playing them like a goddamn fiddle.

Still, having the one Deva where it worked would be a good idea for the Legendary ascended
>>
>>45787183
It'd also be hilarious if all the conglomerate skeleton beings working together are all just...Nito talking to himself through multiple bodies.
I'll also try working on a name for the skeleton lord and perhaps a name for the skeletons themselves.
>>
Maybe a quick recap on the races? Here's some stuff for the mono-colors. Feel free to fill in on things I missed or correct errors. I know there's some stuff that I've missed.

>White: Gargoyles
Description: Constructs which preserve the art and cultural monuments of the past.
Associated Mechanics: Bouncing their controller's permanents.
Legends:

>Blue: Weirds
Description: Servitor elementals created long ago by dwarves and selkies. Formed of conflicting elements, water and earth.
Associated Mechanics: Untap abilities
Legends:

>Black: Skeletons
Description: Reanimated bones. Some originate from the aftermath of the Zinoxe Ascension. Others are driven simply from the recent flood of black mana.
Associated Mechanics: Regenerate, tribal synergy?
Legends: The Sundered

>Red: Shades. Some mention of change to elementals?
Description: Still being determined in thread.
Associated Mechanics: Pump? Devoid from Ghost Fire?
Legends:

>Green: Oozes and Fungi
Description: Pretty self-explanatory. They're decay.
Associate mechanics: Something with their numbers.
Legends: The Worldrot

>Colorless: Different Shades. Maybe new type.
Description: As lands slip between the plane and the blind eternities, some people get trapped in between. Might end up wrapped into the red.
Associated mechanics: Shadow, being cheap.

With the fungi, they would be basically normal green creatures with an additional fungus creature type.
There would also be some green insects immune to the fungus infection.
Green would also get a couple spells dealing with taking control of opponents creatures and making them fungus in addition to their other types.
I also also feel that either Skeletons or Oozes would be good candidates for focusing on +1/+1 counters. For skeletons, they could be sort of like Nishoba in that they're made of +1/+1 counters and lose counters in order to regenerate.
Or for Oozes, they have Modular or a variation of that allows them to transfer +1/+1 counters between each other when they leave play to represent them eating each other and absorbing mass.
>>
>>45789518
For example of a green traitor spell:
>Spore Burst
>3G
>Sorcery
>As an additional cost to cast Spore Burst, sacrifice a creature.
>Gain control of target creature an opponent controls, it gains fungus in addition to it's other types
>>45788774
I think Shade is a better fit over spirit or elemental, and as for having Devoid, that's something I've suggested from their inception. But now I think only a few should have Devoid, perhaps one or two multicolored shades.
Besides the standard shade pump ability, they could have higher attack and lower toughness and abilities that reward the user for letting them die quickly. Some might even have evoke to represent their temporary nature on this plane. Where the Gargoyles are meant to endure, the Shades are meant to dire spectacularly in a blaze of glory.
>>
>>45789823
Just checked the gatherer, and green is the one color that does not get to steal creatures. A couple selkies could though, since they have blue.

As for the other shade not red, I think they can be changed to illusion to better reflect their half-existence.
>>
>>45790022
I understand that green has never gotten a steal effect before, but it is too flavorful not to include it somehow.
Another way would to somehow let a fungus creature copy a a creature in the graveyard, or put a creature in their graveyard under your control that's a fungus in addition to it's other types (or replaces other types.)
It could also be a creature token that targets cards in any graveyard and turns into that creature when it enters the battlefield.
I want infectious fungus and I don't care about traditional color mechanics! Just make it happen!

I looked up fungus to find some art for spore burst, so I could make a mock up card, and this happened.

I'm thinking the Worldrot is something like Marit Lage, a big land that gets dropped and makes itself a horrifying beatstick with the application of mana. Maybe have it do so incrementally though. Instead of marit's "now you have a 20/20 monster" it goes something like "pay 2, Tap the Worldrot . Put a X +1/+1 counters on the Worldrot, where X is the number of +1/+1 counters on it." But I have no idea.

I like the +1/+1 counter idea. and maybe we can include like a Theros Gods trigger for it becoming a creature. Hey, how's this sound for a Deva? I was a bit unsure about it's ability, but I like the flavor of Deva working really well with the phasing mechanic. It doesn't help them, not in the end, but it at least lets them feel better in some abstract way. A 'misery loves company' kind of deal.
>>
>>45801214
That ability is really good if you can keep the Deva alive long enough to use it.
>>
Yo, question, should we make the Legendary Deva a planeswalker? I could be why he didn't sunder as hard as the other Deva. He had a spark, and the Ascension Engine's meltdown ignited it, but fucked with him in a way where he's kind of like old Ob Nixilis. He's technically a planeswalker, but can't leave plane.
>>
>>45802778
I actually thought the same thing. Our true ascended would really profit from being a planeswalker
>>
>>45803607
>>45802778
I like that idea a lot.
So we have a Deva planeswalker, and the Planeforger, should we have a treefolk planeswalker like we discussed a thread or two ago?
>>
>>45805556
How about we have the Treefolk not actually be a planeswalker yet. They can be one of our protagonists, and as part of the story Ignite. Which leads to some shit, when both the Planeforger and the Deva find out.
The Planeforger sees that, and things 'shit, this might be the ticket'. The Deva sees it and things 'fuck that, you don't get that power. I need that to fix everything.'

Honestly for our treefolk, I'm kind of just picturing a grouchy, black/green misanthrope who's adopted a very selfish and fatalistic outlook on life. Because fuck, everything is dead and everyone I know is a mushroom zombie.
So basically Colfenor noir.

He could be similar to the transforming planeswalkers. He starts as a B/G legendary treefolk (probably a shaman) and when he flips into a planeswalker he becomes purified and turns Monogreen.
>Cypress the Hollow

>Treefolk Shaman
>BG, Tap: Search your library for a basic land card, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle your library.

>Cypress the Verdant
>(G)
>Planeswalker - Cypress
>+1: Search your library for a land card, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle your library.
>-2: Target Forest you control becomes a 4/4 Treefolk creature with haste until end of turn. It's still a land.
>0: Until end of turn, Cypress the Verdant becomes a X/X Treefolk Shaman creature with indestructible that's still a planeswalker, where X is the number of lands you control. Prevent all damage that would be dealt to him this turn.

Here's a rough idea I thought up for our Deva planeswalker. I'm not sure about the abilities, but they're kind of based on this.
>+1: Him selectively phasing out someone/selectively shadowing them for a second.
>-2: Simple, effective, and has synergy with Deva cards having stuff that triggers on phasing.
>-7: This is for two things. One, it's supposed to be a super powerful win condition, but it's also supposed to not be able to work on Cypress' ult. I'm thinking that's the big story climax. Watch, as a fuckhuge tree filled with mana punches out an angel dude.

Fun fact: Seorat's name is based off of the Latin words Seorsum and Seorsus which mean 'apart' and 'asunder'!

>>
>>45808888
As a side note, I have an idea for another member of our storied party.

Catfolk mystic, who's young and ends up kind of getting dragged along with our party. A source of optimism to Cypress' constant pessimism.
I'm thinking the Catfolk do the thing where they burn their dead to make shades instead of skeletons, but they still need people to control the shades. This is where their mystics come in. Occasionally you get someone born with the ability to communicate with the shades and control them, and those catfolk are super important, since the shades are their primary method of not getting mobbed by skeletons or oozes or whatever. Our mystic is someone with absurd natural talent, but little training who's jumping ship with the party to get away from responsibility because she's a damn young'un and ain't got no respect.
Mechanically, I'm thinking something kind of like Rakka Mar, spawning in shades instead of elementals and being on her own kind of weak, but with the ability to throw shades at the problem until it explodes.

Gradient was entirely me futzing around. Kind of liked how the bevel played with the pixels at this scale.

As for a name, i played around with possibly deriving it from Plane Forger. Last three letters of "Plane" first three letters of "Forger" came up with Anefor. And with that you could do set names like "Fall of Anefor" or "Chosen of Anefor", maybe make set two "world reforged" or something i dunno.

It winds up interesting visually but I'm sure someone else could do better as far as names go.
>>
>>45799463
Minor thing: you can't technically reveal a card you scry, because putting it back is part of the action. It either needs to be "Reveal the top card of your library", or "Scry 1, then reveal the top card of your library".
>>45801214
Love this! I'd say this is a great example for a Rare Deva.
>>45808655
The abilities on this need a little work-the first ability won't stop them attacking on their turn(and can be worded better), and the second is only useful for stopping a creature blocking because it comes in next turn. Adapt the first one to "Prevent all damage that would be dealt to or dealt by target creature or planeswalker until your next turn", and maybe the second to "Target permanent phases out. It doesn't phase in on it's controller's next turn.

Each plane has a certain amount of mana, depending on how many lands it has, but there are nigh unlimited planes in the multiverse. So in a sense it is infinite.

Yeah, but it takes mana to get the materials for the new mana generators.

That map looks pretty good, including the islands. Could you try making some symbols that we can you to place races around the map?
For example, the cat folk might have a burning claw, tree folk a gnarled leafless tree, deva a geometric shape with an eye on the center, etc. they should be able to fit inside of the hexes.

The flavor text might be a little off color like anon said but you're on the right track.

I feel that Selkie communities would most likely build underwater habitats that are not obvious from the surface. Sort of like beaver dams combined with hobbit holes or underwater caverns.
Where there are mangroves, they'll build beneath the roots.
Selkie magic is all about stealth and avoiding the various dangers of their world. Countermagic and hexproof/shroud would be on quite a few, as well as unblockable/landwalk.
Selkies are very close to the land, and their shamans have been able to use their magic to undo some of the damage to the plane by converting Wastes back into normal lands, but the Wastes might be spreading faster than they have a chance to reverse their spread.
Selkies tend to be quite isolated compared to the nomadic Catfolk and wandering Dwarves. Despite the environmental degradation, lakes and shorelines with Selkies tend to more ecologically robust than in other places.
Besides their stealth magic, Selkies rely on a number of different kinds of Weirds which are basically robots made out of water with a core made of bits of organic and inorganic material. Usually it's just made from whatever is lying around at the moment. Most Weirds never leave the company of their Selkie creators, but they could leave any time. Selkies don't treat Weirds like slaves, just like easily replaceable tools. Weirds are defined by the fact that they are cheap to make and often have good utility abilities to protect and serve their creators.

Zombie Treefolk would vary from predatory plants that have lost their identity, to violent senile treefolk who struggle to understand the present and lash out at those who attempt to communicate with them.
The treefolk zombies are the last remnants of the ancient forests. They have been replaced by the Fungal Forests and their own strange ecosystem has helped spread the corruption that arose since the death of the Green Sliver Queen, who maintained the health of the worlds forests.
Cypress the Hollow is a particularly powerful Treefolk Shaman who has managed to hold onto his mind, though he has grown incredibly bitter over the state of the world and shamed by his inability to fix things. He remembers the old forests and is basically waiting for death when he is roped into an adventure that could save the plane.

Selkies in folklore are shapeshifters, should our selkies be Shapeshifter Merfolk (and possibly 3rd type?) Or just have it as flavor rather than as a separate sub-type?

This needs to be re-ordered, or you can keep draining even after you run out of Islands. try [t],[C][C][C][C], Island drain X: Destroy X attacking creatures.
This raises a good point actually-Do we have anything set up so far to stop you "draining" the same land over and over? do we check for existing drain counters?

Changed. Drain only works on lands without a drain counter. Though I think Weirds or Skeletons need an ability to increase the number of drain counters on a land.
Preliminary Selkie writeup:
Selkies, the Merfolk of the Fading Plane of Anefor. These creatures were once simple shamans, explorers, and sea scroungers, with the failing of the Anefor, the have turned their skills to espionage and assassination. Their former homes gradually degrading from lush forests, lakes and seashores to putrid swamps and briny bogs.
Selkies claim small portions of shore and forest as colonies for raising pups and settling down elder members of the clan. The clans have kept their semi-migratory society mostly intact, but now they trade knowledge and skills relating to their new roles as infiltrators.
Roles within the clan are generally assigned by Grandmother, the eldest Selkie female, who also watches over the colony's den. Grandfather, a title earned through combat with the previous Grandfather, is charged with patrolling the colony and eliminating outsiders and protecting any claims. Most Selkie are only interested in feeding the colony, through trapping and fishing, or gathering plants and mussels.
Those Selkie skilled with magic set out for distant islands where they may practice their skills with little risk to others, on occasion a Skilled Wizard or Shaman will tutor young Selkies who show promise.
Selkies have resigned themselves to eventual oblivion when Anefor finally succumbs to entropy.

How's this. Kind of a Panoptic Mirror, but multiple casts, but it's an active cost, rather than a passive upkeep ability.

Kinship - At the beginning of your upkeep, you may look at the top card of your library. If it shares a creature type with [this card], you may reveal it. If you do [shit get's real].

I only used the keyword (which I wasn't supposed to do with kinship), because that's a LOT of fucking text and I wanted to have room for the copy ability and a line(ONE LINE) of flavor text. If I had used the whole thing it would have just been a wall of text.

I can try cleaning it up.

Kinship
If you revealed the top card of your library, exile an instant or sorcery card from your hand. Search your graveyard, hand, and library for all cards with the same name and exile them.
G/U: Cast a copy of a card exiled by Tlk Ta whithout paying its mana cost.

Tried putting the trimmed text on a card.
For the change in mana cost, that ability could never exist in mono-green. Hybrid mana is for cards that could be mono-colored.

Example:
Flash can appear on mono-blue or mono-green. Therefore it can be hybrid blue/green.
Something with Flying typically can't be green. Something with Trample typically can't be blue. Something with Flying and Trample should require both blue and green Or be a red dragon, but that's beside the point.

Extended art edition.
With Kinship you don't have to specify "if you revealed the top card," Kinship effect doesn't trigger if you don't reveal the card, so this saves you some text.

Designer's Note: I tried to make her name a pair of simple noises that could be pronounced by both human and seal vocal cords.

>>45830846
I didn't realize that Kinship was an actual ability word. I feel kind of stupid.
Now there's an issue in that. Ability Words are just flavor text for abilities. They have no rule meaning. It'd require having the whole thing typed out.

>>
>>45831251
Yeah, but it's kinda annoying to have a word that groups a common ability, but then have to spell out the action it refers to EVERY FREAKING TIME. Kinship is literally: Upkeep>Look at top card of Library. Shares Type with [card with Kinship] True/False. If True (Optional):Reveal to [ABILITY] and continue turn. If False: Continue turn.
No reason to have to spell it out every time. Kinship: Thing happens if you want.
>>
>>45831456
We have a couple options here. I'd have no problem for using ability words as shorthand for common triggers I do this with proxies. Otherwise, we could keyword the peek and reveal.

I just think Kinship (and Landfall, and Metalcraft, now that I think about it) should be keywords already. They have a set trigger that allows an ability to function. I mean, they're not like Chroma, which triggered very differently for different cards. I'm fine and would prefer if Kinship was an actual keyword rather than an ability word.
>>
>>45825264
>>45826953

This card is over-complicated and badly written.

Kinship should not be a keyword since it doesn't do anything on its own. Using language retroactively to refer to something rather than just explaining it in the first place is actually longer and less clear than just using an ability word.

As written the text box should look like this:

"Kinship -- At the beginning of your upkeep, you may look at the top card of your library. If it shares a creature type with Tik Ta, you may reveal it. If you do, exile an instant or sorcery from your hand.
1G/UT: Cast a copy of a card exiled with Tik Ta without paying its mana cost."

However, I would try for something shorter and in GU's theme, like:

"Kinship -- At the beginning of your upkeep, you may look at the top card of your library. If it shares a creature type with Tik Ta, you may reveal it. If you reveal a creature card this way, put a token onto the battlefield that's a copy of that card."
>>
>>45833351

The other problem with it (as you had it... I think the copying version I just wrote would be ok on this point) is that it doesn't fit the qualifications of a hybrid card. Specifically, it doesn't really feel like it could be a mono-green card, so it can't be a green hybrid card.

It might be good to have somebody to reign in some of the more outrageous card designs here. A few have been made, some of mine included.

I've come up with some ideas for extinct Races. Only a few examples of each race exist and would probably only be legendaries.
>WG: Loxodon
>WU: Kor
>UB: Vedalken
>BR: Viashino
>RG: Centaur
The Kor were the ones who would attempt ascendancy from the cataclysmic environmental changes that the world was experiencing.
Their experiments changed them, but not in the way they wanted. They returned transformed them into Devas.
The bodies they left together in their race-wide extinction created a terrible being, The Skullmind (name pending). This newly awakened being (a skeleton god, maybe?) is composed of thousands of skeletons and broadcasts its necromancy power over the entire plane, allowing it to raise skeletons from anywhere in the world.
The Vedalken were one of the most technologically advanced groups on this plane, but eventually they blew each other up with fleets of heavily armed thopters.
One true Vedalken named Nironax still lives thanks to heavy mechanical modifications (making him a WUB Artifact Vedalken Artificer) and he keeps some artificial vedalken slaves in his fortress. He makes sure it is impossible for them to leave his heavily defended fortress. Though an isolationist, he has sometimes traded for materials too difficult for him to scavenge from nearby. Although his thopters can be seen all over the plane, slowly watching and showing Nironax scenes of a Plane gone mad. There are no more bombs left, so the thopters only get to observe how the world has changed since they dropped their terrible cargo.
The Loxodons, the Centaurs and Viashino were too primitive or disorganized to survive the cataclysms that ruined the world, so the only examples left of their race are a few sites of their influence and a Zombified or skeletal version of the Viashino and Centaur, and a WUG Loxodon Spirit I've named Gormaru, if we include Snow creatures, he'd be one for sure.

I've been seeing some wacky card design as well.
