By your estimate, you have ridden about a thousand Akumachi City metro trains in your life. The overall experience is a mixed one. They’re fast and the inner air-conditioning is always in top condition, but overpopulation in the National Empire of Japan ensures that the carriages are always crammed with bodies of all sizes, unless it’s the middle of the night. Today is no exception. You stand in the middle of the carriage, the bodies of the city’s residents threatening to collapse onto you from all sides. The train rumbles down the magnetic track and you catch the almost-nauseating whiff of cheap cologne. You turn away before more of it infects your nostrils.

“Sorry, Takashi-kun, I have work today.” Celeste says, twirling a cherry-flavored lollipop in her fingers. She’s next to you, holding a vertical bar with a free hand. “You’ll have to go on without me.”

“Why are you apologizing? It isn’t your fault.” You ask. “I’m not about to collapse into a mass of jelly just because you’re not walking home with me.”

“I’m being polite, duh.” She makes a fake gasp, cupping her mouth with her hand. “Are you saying that you haven’t learned basic human decency? Shame on you, Takashi-kun!”

“Ha ha, very funny, Celeste…” You pause to think, ignoring Celeste’s giggling. “By the way, when exactly do you work? I don’t think you’ve ever told me.”

“My work schedule at first was a bit wonky because Lucianne kept slotting me into places at random. Now I work on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday nights from seven to ten. I’m also on the on the event and holiday roster as well.” Celeste replies.

“That…sounds like a lot.” You remark.

Celeste looks confused. “Is it? Don’t you think you could handle it? Your Persona’s endurance is higher than mine.”

“Alright, I get it.” You grumble, as an entire film reel’s worth of missed opportunities to punch the negative emotions of humanity and gain sweet loot rolls through your mind. “Look, I’ve been busy lately. There was important shit that needed sorting out and I was right man for the job.”

The muscles in Celeste’s neck visibly stiffen as she looks in the opposite direction. Her eyes widen at the sight of the streams of passengers entering and exiting the train carriage, like a school of sardines swimming down a very narrow tunnel. She gasps, tightens her grip on her bag and moves to the nearest exit.

“Got to go! See you tomorrow, Takashi-kun!”

“Later.”

The metal doors slide shut beside her. The train picks up speed and hurtles down the magnetic tracks. Five minutes later, you find yourself in the District 6 train station. You step out and head for the elevators.

“Yo!”

You halt in your tracks. A familiar voice prickles your eardrums. A strange premonition washes over you, as heavy as lead and as thick as the nuclear waste generated by Japan’s power plants. You slowly turn around to see the face of one Chikashi Yone. The guy is wearing his ragged school uniform, as usual. He is also holding an empty soda can, which is quickly vacated from his hands into a nearby garbage bin.

“What’s up, Wakui?”

We can definitely get a lot better, but as-is I think we could do pretty well in a duel using just our single-target spells.
