You are Tom Gainer. Two days ago, your college career was explosively cut short by... well, an explosive, and you unfortunately contracted superpowers. Not trusting the government or the Super Union, you fled the city and decided to hide out in the woods to learn your powers. That went... okay, you guess, though it did end with accidental animal slaughter. You are now pretty sure you could rule the parkour circuit and that your sound powers increase and decrease noise from almost nothing to deadly levels. You aren't sure how high you can turn the theoretical dial, but you are sure that you hadn't even reached your upper limit. You also discovered you are now immune to permanent damage to your sense of hearing, which is pretty great you guess.

The big problem right now is, someone found you. Despite being miles into a massive forest reserve, someone affiliated with the Super Union found you. You are also convinced he 100% knew exactly who you were despite the low light and you giving a false name. The man, Richie, he called himself, informed you that the Union was offering an apology for their initial statement regarding you and the explosion that gave you, and apparently a fairly large number of others in Crimson Beach, powers. On top of that, the Union is offering to help you learn to use your powers safely. Of course, you aren't sure you can fully trust them since they work with the government.

So here you are, Tom Gainer, waking up in a tent in the woods with a month's worth of trail mix and squirrel meat. The city you left being now over crowded with Supers like you who might know even less about their powers than you do yours. You have the option to give yourself up to the Union, take on good faith their promises of proper training and fair treatment and probably be offered a job as a Card Carrying Cape.

OR

Stay in the woods and hone your skills in the wilds of New Hampshire, leaving the city to deal with its own problems.

You made a plan and you are not one to change their minds based on some mysterious guy who just happens to say he's from the Super Union. Besides, you bet their crappy club only gets half-off deli sandwiches near their branch headquarters. You buckle down and think of better ways to train your abilities than just thinking about them or running up trees. You think if you condition yourself to relate your powers to an action you might have a better time controlling sound. The easiest action you think of is snapping. You've been pretty good at that since you were little and can snap not only with both hands, but with any finger and strangely enough also with your toes. Strange, useless talents to the rescue!

For your Enhanced Agility, you're confident in you power to go up and down trees, so you spend the rest of the day putting together the mother of all obstacle courses for you to go through. To your credit, you did a damn good job. The whole thing will test not only your speed and mobility, but also your endurance.

Its been a whole six months since you started your training with your powers and you've found that you have adapted to your abilities incredibly fast. Its almost frightening how naturally you've learned how to control your abilities. Speaking of frightening things, there has been one disquieting question that has been at the back of your mind for several months: The Union knows where you are, but why haven't they tried to take you during your training? Are they too spread thin to send more than just a messenger out to you once? Are they trying to cover you up since the last time you saw a news report they were putting the blame for the explosion on your shoulders?

Whatever the case, you are curious about the state of Crimson Beach. You walk to the edge of the reserve that provides an overlook of the metropolis. While on your way there, you get a good look at your reflection in the river. Its not Grizzly Adams, but you're somewhere between 'Mountain Man' and 'Smelly Hobo.' Well, maybe you should do see a barber if you ever go back into town. Its not much more than another minute before you reach the overlook. What you see surprises you.

What was once a shining city seems to have suffered a Detroit. There are areas that seem like they've been hit by bombs and never rebuilt. You can tell there are neighborhoods that have declined into what you could consider 'slums' and others that are actually just smoking craters. Its a little unnerving. With your finely trained Sound Powers, you can hear the distant sounds of violence and sirens from the nearest point of the city outskirts. With your Enhanced Agility, you could probably get there within a few minutes of extended running...

You've been living off your Boy Scout skill for half a year, you could at least TRY to do a good deed once. Besides, it'd be a good idea to put out feelers to see what the hell happened to Crimson Beach. You jump off the cliff nonchalantly, quickly grabbing rocks jutting from the cliff face to slow your fall into a merely a speedy descent rather than a free fall. You hit the ground running, leaping over logs, rocks and around obstacles with an amazing flourish that is almost inhuman. You arrive on the scene where the sounds of violence and sirens were coming from. But first there in a very pressing matter that is taking priority:

There is a police car flipping through the air about to land on your head.

Thank god for you, sir! This might have been a surprisingly short Quest.
Also, did we train away all the good Agility?

SNAP
Just a twitch of your fingers and you halt the car in midair! From three angles you alter sound so it pulses at a frequency intense enough to actually suspend the car through sound. With another snap of your fingers, you gently allow the car to reunite with the pavement. The police officer inside is unconscious and you notice that the front of the now stationary car is horrifically mangled. What ever did this must have been some kind of... monster...

On pure instinct, your body does a side flip. Whatever it was you just vaulted over, it is hairy and, from what you can hear, very, VERY angry. You turn and finally get a look at it. This dude is giant. Easily 12 feet tall, built like a lighthouse and covered in dark brown fur. On top of that, bull-like horns are protruding from his head. He turns to look at you and you can tell by his bovine facial features this guy is some kind of Minotaur.

He bellows angrily at you and charges you again screaming. "GIVE. GIVE HER BACK!"

"What are you talking about?!" You shout as the Minotaur rushes at you. With your left hand you snap your fingers together, sending a pulse of sound at him at a frequency you're sure could knock out an rhino. Of course you aren't if there are species of animals that are less susceptible to ultra frequencies of sound than others, so you make a note to not actually say it and sound like an idiot. Back to the moment at hand, the sound blast reaches the Minotaur and has instant effects. He lets out a bellow of pain and confusion as he crashes off to the side of you. Like a badass, you don't even flinch.

"GIVE HER BACK... G-GIVE Me back... my... Serah..." He mutters out as he fades in and out of consciousness. You must've hit him harder than you though. But to his credit, the furry tank isn't out for long. You are able to once again get some distance between the two of you. Maybe you can get him to calm down.

"I don't know what you're talking about. Who is Serah? Who took her?" You ask questions trying to be reasonable. He is less so and charges at you again.

You spin off to the right. You resist the urge to show "TORO!" as you wonder if that would be racist. You turn and watch as the Minotaur stop himself. His feet gouge into the asphalt, making a sound that makes you grimace. This guy is seriously strong and tough. You're pretty sure you would have been a red smear on the ground if it wasn't for the training you undertook.

"GIVE HER BACK! GIVE HER" He picks up a fire hydrant like it was a cup from a table and whips it at your head. "BACK TO ME! GIVE ME MY DAUGHTER!" He screams, his eyes, you notice are reddened and the fur around his eyes and cheeks have dark lines running down to his jawline.

You deftly dodge under the hydrant-turned-baseball and shout back at the massive monster.

"I can't give her back if you kill me! Calm down and let's talk about this!" You stare him down as he pants angrily for a few moments before bellowing into the air and sitting down. His bellow begins to break up into sobs as he weeps into his hands.

"I'm... I'm a monster. They took her away because of my condition. They said my unstable temperment was a danger to her." He takes a deep breath and lets out one more sob. "And they're right! She is gone one day and look what I've done!"

You take a step closer. If a crying man is an uncomfortable sight, then a messily crying Bull-Man is downright disturbing.

You move and sit down next to the furry colossus. Awkwardly you reach up to pat him on the shoulder. Next to him, your 6 foot ass looks tiny as shit. You clear your throat and do your best to console him.

"Hey, look. You're calm now, right? If you can stay calm you can make a case for getting her back. Maybe promise to see someone about anger management classes? You can get her back. It might be hard, but she's worth it, right?" You've been away from human contact for half a year, but you still got mad people skills. All those years of minimum wage fast food finally pays off.

He lifts his face out of his hands. He's... kind of gross to look at right now, but he wipes away the tears and mucus with his arm. There is a look of hope in his eyes. "You think so? You think they'll go for that?" He smiles and wraps his arms around you in a massive hug. "I don't know who you are, man, but you gotta be right! Thank you! What's your name, man?"

It's our hero name. So not technically a lie.
>>
>Tell him your name
Some bad people are chasing me, so I need you too not repeat my name to anyone until we know that we can trust them.
>>45689913
>>
>>45689975
Our hero name is Pulse.
>>
>>45690006
You think they'd still be chasing that one random kid out of thousands of new supers and monsters? I'll go with

Add:
Why don't you call me Pulse for now?

Fuck that noise, that's a shit name.

Honestly its better than the working hero name I'd been using. "Mute"

>>45690135
Still say Bob Ross is best name.
>>
>>45690135

Why not Quiet?
>>
>>45690108
New anon here. How about:
>Vibrium
>Chekna
>Hourus
>Wave
>Big Red
>Echo
>Blosk
>Seven
>>
>>45690135
Yeah, as a deaf person, I think about this and what actual hearing is like a lot. Thanks.
>>
>>45690191
>>Vibrium
I really like this. Otherwise
>>Chekna
Is my second choice.
>>
>>45690191
>>45690177
I tried to think up something that could be connected with sound but that wasn't obvious. I like Quiet except that it doesn't really thematically fit. Echo is also good. But Pulse is my favorite.

While you think about your hero name, it seems we'll be telling the giant Minotaur your real name. Writing!

Sorry, I meant it more like the mute function on a sound system or tv when I first came up with the character concept.

That's where I got the name from.
>>
>>45690348
It's fine. Mute and deaf are two different things. They can be associated, but not necessarily. Deaf people cannot talk well. One kid I knew could only grunt. We had to communicate with him by interpreting his body language. Thank you for being considerate.
>>
>>45690191
>Echo
My second pick is Vibrium.
>>
>>45690191
Big Red made me think of a red/white color scheme.

Why even take a cape name?
Why not just stay Tom Gainer, and say fuck capeshit and their capeshit rules/traditions?
>>
>>45690487
Good point. Not so much a cape name as a disguise, I think. We don't want others to know who we are....yet. I think that the time has not come to put our real name out into this shitpit of a city.
>>
Capeshit can be limited to a red running jacket and white exercise shorts. Maybe some stripes. Earbuds for our tunes and so that we can drop a bass like a motherfucker.

"I'm Tom. I've, uh, been out of communication for around half a year. What's been going on around here? It wasn't like this when I left!" You gesture to the hazy skyline. The Minotaur shrugs. "Its been going down hill here since that bomb went off at the University. The bomb went off and suddenly people around the city, yours truly included, suddenly started getting powers. The Union tried to investigate the source of this crazy-ass Super Outbreak came from, but besides the bomb blast, no one found anything. From there things just got out of hand. The Union couldn't juggle all of the new Supers and maintain order over the new Villains popping up. They have a couple Capes in the area, but they're so stretched thin, they get replaced with new ones every month." He gestures wildly at the city before freezing then looking back at you with a sheepish expression. "Oh I forgot. My name is Jim. And, again, thanks for the pep talk. Do you need a place to stay? You said you've haven't been around here in six months. I have..." His ears lower and he gazes down. "I have an extra room at the moment. And I can at least lend it to you if you need a place to crash."

>Fuck yeah! Minobro get!
>Nah that's alright... We have our Camp Site of Solitude.
>Maybe once in a while, kind of like a forward base
>Write in?
>>
>>45690586
Agreed. Just wear something not covered in shit and dirt and adopt a nickname. No super-hero, no "nobody knows who I am to the point that I'm completely irrelevant", just vigilante justice.
>>
>>45690487
>>45690534
>>45690586
We've basically said fuck capes up to this point, why start adopting their ways now?
At most we can take a fake, non-cape, name and a simple mask, like a balaclava, to protect our identity.

>>45690711
>Maybe once in a while, kind of like a forward base
>Nah that's alright... We have our Camp Site of Solitude.
Camp is still our main place, but we can stay over/visit once in a while. Keep him company.
>>
>>45690711
>>Fuck yeah! Minobro get!
Also check to see if we can grab a new set of jackets/hoodie and pants from a destroyed clothing store that isn't on fire/burned.

>>
>>45690711
>>Fuck yeah! Minobro get!

>>
>>45690432
Thank you for pointing out the insensitivity of the name.

The Popular names seem to be:
>Echo
>Virbrium
>Big Red
>Chekna (which I'll need someone to explain this to me since I'm some kind of idiot.
>Pulse
>>
>Fuck yeah! Minobro get
Thanks, man! If you ever want to go somewhere else, you can come to the reserve with me. We can work on our powers there. Hey, who knows, if we work on our powers enough we can convince those guys to give you your daughter back! You won't be called unpredicable anymore!
>>
>>45690808
We seem to be swinging towards non cape name.

Also, headphones or earbuds?
>>
>>45690808

>>45690808
I'd go with Vibrium. I think Chekna is some kind of made up sound some anon thought was cool.
>>
>>45690856
Just to let you guys know, you might end up being sensationalized by the media. If the character Tom doesn't come up with a Cape name, the local news will. And in this case, Local news means I use a name generator.
>>
>>45690711
>Maybe once in a while, kind of like a forward base

"But we can still be friends."
>>
Holding on to Pulse. >>45690808
Echo for second.
>>
>>45690880
Neither. I think we lost our iPhone in the woods.
>>
>>45690912
Let them, we aren't conforming to their capeshit ways.
>>
>>45690946
Good point. Loot some stuff. Sound begets music.
Ask Minotaur if he has a phone he can't use.
>>
>>45690952
We aren't registering with the big company, but we can choose what they call us so we don't get stuck with a dumb name like "Soundwave".

Teah. Vibrainium just sounds like vibrate and uranium combined. But since Vibrainium is literally "Metal that reflects vibrations" I would say a shortened version of it would be perfect for our vigilante nickname.
>>
i think i know what that d20 was for it was for how the city fared wasnt it

an its gone to shit
>>
Vibe, then. Vibrium feels too abbreviated to me.
>>45691168
Good idea, though.
>>
wait are we not!Shocker
>>
>>45690987
You think about it for a moment. For the last six months, you have been living in a tent in the woods surviving off of trail mix, which ran out pretty early on, and whatever animals you could hunt and plants that you could remember were edible. It was a rough life, but you survived and made that camp feel like home. But Jim the Minotaur was offering a soft, warm bed and meals that didn't require you to personally kill. On top of that, the last few months have been difficult because of the cold, New England winter. Its February now, and Old Man Winter wasn't still not showing any sign of letting up. When you started this trip, you didn't prepare for the cold as much as you should have, but, hey, you were in a hurry. At this point in time, Jim's house is the more sensible option for you, at least until the thaw. Besides, it would probably be a good idea to let Mom and Dad know you aren't dead or being held in some kind of Super Guantanamo Bay.

"You know what, Jim? I think I'll take you up on that."

The Minotaur grins widely and gets on his feet.

"Awesome! Just follow me and I'll show you the place!" For a giant cow on two legs, Jim moves really fast.

My guess is that whatever was in that van has a diminishing effect the farther away the people were from the blast range. This probably means we are either the most innately powerful mutant or there's a army of Teenage mutant ninja rats coming to rule the surface world from the sewers.
>>
>>45691610
Was there only one van?
The Captcha for this was commercial trucks, laughably.

This heavily implies that only one can bomb went off.

--------------

I'm going to go with the shorter Vibe as Vibrium doesn't sound like the kind of name a Sensationalist news paper would come up with. Sounds too smart and is just a little bit of a mouthful.

----------
>>45691200
Also congrats on getting it right on the nose, bro! That's going to be a recurring mechanic of crucial moment in the plot I'm going to refer as Crossroad Decisions. A d20 is rolled to determine the repercussions of your choices on the world and on its characters.

Nope just one van. The exact details of this, though are some juicy, spoilery secrets!
I do welcome and encourage crazy conspiracies, though. Second sniper on the grassy gnoll, go!

>>
So where do you generate the powers people we meet have or do you do it all ad-lib?
>>
I finally have a reason to do Twitter. >>45692167
>>
>>45692212
I've actually been writing out these characters for a little over 2 years in preparation for creating a legit comic about them. I have about 20 or so characters somewhat fleshed out (as in their names, powers, and basic personalities)

The main character is different (he was actually on the power set list) and you aren't following what I would call my 'canon' storyline, so there is quite a lot of ad-lib here. And I will admit MOST of the names dropped as the heads of the Super Union were completely made up on the spot. But Jim the Minotaur and even Tom are characters that I've tossed around in the ol' noggin for a while.
>>
>>45692303
Can you tell us what the other two potential people would have been like? Or are they going to appear later?
>>
>>45692303
Is the city Gotham now or is on the way to being Gotham
>>
>>45692392
The other two Power Sets were:
Milo Vargas: A Monstrous Super
and
Richard deLuna: A Union Super

You briefly met Richie, but both of them are in the game. Who knows, if when you guys meet them, and you are for it, I might do some Side Quest things with Milo and/or Richard.

Funny Story, Richard deLuna is actually based off my most successful CoC character. Dick deLuna the lounge singer.

>>45692447
I'd say Crimson Beach is more like Chicago is now, so think Gotham Lite.... or Gotham BRIGHT *shot*
>>
>>45692491
Ok like Chicago

>>
>>45692605
Also with the police from Robocop's Detroit. Severely overworked, underpaid, and understaffed.
>>
>>45692651
Weird request but after we learn what's happened to the city can we get a map of the city an eventual of the territories of the big players that updates every time we take one down
>>
>>45692716
Yeah I think I can do that. Draw up a base map edit it on the computer. I mean, even with Class 5 powers, its not going to be an easy task to take down key organizations, plus you never know if you might decide to side with one.
>>
>>45692802
It also gives a sense of progress that we are working towards a goal
>>
>>45692841
I can see that.

Well boys and girls, feel free to keep speculating. I am going to bed because it is midnight here... or close enough to it. I usually work mornings so my body is telling me to sleep. I'll hopefully see you all tomorrow when we continue this adventure and start a sitcom with Jim the Minotaur.
