You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

The long plane ride back to Hawaii finally ends, narrowly beating out the sun as it rises from the east. You're awoken by the shock of the landing gear touching down, and you reflexively stretch and yawn as you undo your safety belt. Thankfully, this time, you have a rather uneventful dream, or at least one that you don't really remember. No creepy beaches or frozen seas for you!

Meanwhile, your sisters, White Plains, and Sam begin to rouse from their slumbers as well. Midway is already up and sipping a thermos of coffee from god knows where.

Aaaaaand, as expected, Luce, Daly, and Wren were still fast asleep, hands locked together and snoring loudly. You could see the poor loadmaster looking at the scene in consternation, unsure of how to handle such a situation.

"Well, I'll see ya later girls, I gotta report back to me team!" Red gives a quick wink and wave to you all as she bounds down the slowly opening rear ramp.

"I apologize for having to put you through all this right after your leave period, but these are unusual times." The Captain says calmly to you all. You wonder if he slept at all, or if he sleeps ever. "But you've all got a busy day ahead of you."

However, you're totally not listening to him because just to the side, you could see a very angry looking Portland stomping towards the plane, followed by San Diego who was looking a bit more apologetic.

Shit.

You sigh to yourself. You might as well face Portland head on. It's not like you could avoid her forever.

"Yo, Sweet Pea." You grin and wave as you head down the ramp, trying to look as casual as possible. "I guess you must be pretty pi-"

You're stopped as Portland's palm impacts against your face, letting out a loud CLANG as steel crashes into steel, your armor defenses instinctively activating in response to the attack.

You stare at Portland in shock, almost ready to hit her back when youf inally get a good look at her face. She's not angry, far from it. That quivering bottom lip, her eyes on the verge of tears.

She was RELIEVED.

"Idiot." Portland mumbles as she follows up the slap with a hug, wrapping her arms around you..

Um... you totally weren't expect this. What... what were supposed to do?!?!

Um, you guess you should hug her back? It seemed lie the reasonable thing to do. You wrap your arms around Portland and pat her on the back.

"Jeez, where the heck did this come from?" You ask in surprise.

"When we heard that San Diego was under attack..." Portland sniffs as she pulls back. "Well, we all feared the worst. And then we saw you sail into that fog and come out fighting that Abyssal Water Demon..."

"Poor Portland here wanted to take a plane straight there to help!" San Diego adds in with a smile. "Had to take a direct order from the Admiral himself to stand down!"

"Aw, Sweet Pea, I'm touched." You grin.

"D-Don't expect this to be a regular thing." Portland huffs as she begins to regain her composure, adjusting her glasses. "It would just be a shame if I lost my task force without me even being there!"

"Sure thing, Sweet Pea." You chuckle.

"And don't call me Sweet Pea." Portland grumbles.

"Of course, Sweet Pea." You cackle.

"Honestly." Portland glares at you, back to her normal self.

"JUST KISS ALREADY!" Johnston yells from behind.

SHIT. You totally forgot about everybody else!

"Oooooooooh, does Hoel really swing that way?!" Luce and her sisters chime at once.

"W-what?!" Portland blinks, more confused than angry. her bridge crew still trying to process what had just happened.

"Oh my~." San Diego giggles. "Probably would have been better if you put in some tongue."

"Eeeeeeh, it was an okay kiss, I guess." Johnston frowns. "Could've been more... passionate?"

"So-so." Heerman agrees.

"I never knew Hawaii was so liberal!" Midway smiles.

"Ooooooooooooo!" Luce and her sisters coo.

"What just happened?" Portland asks again, still not completely sure what happened. You might have actually broken something.

Now seemed like a good time to skedaddle.

"Well uh, I got some other stuff to do." You say quickly as you hand off the stunned Portland to San Diego as you pick up your bag. "I'll catch you guys later!"

You then dash off at full steam before anybody can catch up with you. Let them sort that whole mess without you.

"HOOOOOEEEEELLLLL!" You hear Portland bellow in the distance behind you. Guess her brain finally caught up to the present.

Good thing there was a lot of distance between you and her right now. Now that you were sure you were a safe distance away, you take out your phone and dial Anna's number.

"Hey, Anna!" You say.

"Hoel!" Anna chirps. "You're finally back!"

"Yep! Are you on base? I got a few souvenirs for you!" You say happily, your bag secure in your hands.

"Oh, well, I'm at Mulberry's! Just meet me there!" Anna chirps.

You reach Mulberry's cafe quickly enough. It's location practically burned into your memory. You find Anna sitting at the counter, with a comically oversized mug of steaming coffee in her hands. In addition, you frown as you look around the cafe. You could swear that there were more shipgirls in here than usual... maybe it was your imagination?

"Hoel! Hoel!" Anna waves happily. "You're finally back!"

"Yep." You smile as you take a seat next to her. "Guess you heard about the battle, huh?"

"Yep!" Anna nods happily. "Heard how you really mauled those Abyssals! So uh, besides that, how was your vacation?"

"Good..." You nod as you dig into your bag for her present. You pull out...

"Well, I got ya something from the trip!" You grin as you pull out that Indiana Jones hat that just SPOKE to you in the store. In one smooth motion, you plop it down on Anna's head. You notice with some amusement that even though it was the smallest size possible, it still absolutely dwarfed Anna's head, covering her yes even with her headphones on.

"Aaaah!" Anna yelps. "Y-you really got this for me?"

"Yep." You nod. "Figured you could use a bit more adventuring in your life!"

"Thanks, Hoel!" Anna's smile just melts your heart. "Maybe the Admiral will let me wear it on deployment..."

However, at the very mention of the Admiral's name, you hear the door get kicked open with a loud SLAM, causing everybody in the cafe to turn to investigate. What you see is a very down looking Sam, as if she'd just gone straight through a hurricane. Physically, she was fine, but that empty look in her eyes lets you know that her heart had been shredded up inside. Having deduced the same thing you did, the rest of the crowd turns away, wisely choosing to stay out of it.

Sam just sits at the far end of the counter and points up to the shelf that holds all the most powerful alcoholic drinks. The types that San Fran pretty much monopolized for herself.

"Poor Sam... what happened to her?" Anna gasps.

Geez, what the hell did the Admiral say to her?

The US doesn't have traditional idols the same way Japan does. I think you first need to define what the American equivalent is, and then choose the ship girl who matches that.

However, depending on your equivalent I'd suggest Maury or Marblehead.

"Give me a minute here, Anna." You say as you slide over next to Sam, who's already started with downing a bottle of very expensive looking tequila.

"Hey, um, Sam." You mumble. "You okay?"

"Do I look okay?" Sam grumbles as she takes pull directly from the bottle, not even bothering to pour it out in glasses. Out of the corner of your eye, you could see Mulberry giving a concerned look.

"Did he really chew you out that bad?" You frown.

"No. I was really hoping he would... but he didn't." Sam shakes her head in frustration.

"What? If he wasn't angry then why are getting all sulky?" You blink in surprise.

"Oh, he was plenty angry." Sam laughs bitterly. "But not in the way you think."

"Well, what did he do, then?" You ask, your interest piqued.

"Oh, same thing he did like last time." Sam sighs as she takes another pull from the bottle. "Just... gave me this disappointed look. Like... like I'm just a kid of his who keeps fucking up."

Huh, that was odd...

"Doesn't even write me up for it, nor does he think up of some kind of NJP. He just... gives me that disappointed look, tells me not to do it again, and just let's me go..." Sam slams her forehead against the wood counter, shaking the whole table. "It just pisses me off!"

She then finishes off he remainder of the tequila bottle and slams it on the counter with a loud THUNK, grabbing Mulberry's attention.

"Mul, reload." Sam grumbles.

"W-what would you like?" Mulberry asks, clearly concerned.

"The next strongest one." Sam sighs.

Mulberry reluctantly sets down a fresh bottle. Scotch this time. Sam grabs it, pulls the cork out, and then pauses and turns to you.

"Wanna try some? Sucks to be a lonely drunk. God knows I've seen San Fran do it enough times."

Well, that was one way to solve the problem, you guess.

"Oh dear..." Mulberry sighs as she drapes a blanket over the passed out destroyer escort. "I guess I'll keep an eye on her until she comes too. Poor thing is going to have a dreadful hangover..."

"W-wow, you were really lucky there, Hoel!" Anna blinks. "I've seen Sam knock out BATTLESHIPS with a single punch!"

Well, maybe you were gonna give the Admiral a piece of your mind for this. Or at least get an explanation from him. You leave the passed out Sam in Mulberry's care as you stand up from your seat.

"Hey, Anna, I'm gonna go pay the Admiral a visit. Wanna come with?" You ask your friend.

"A-ah, well, I'd love to but I um, need to head to the armory to get a tuneup from Shen!" Anna explains. You can tell it's only a half truth, though. You suspect she doesn't want to confront the Admiral over this. Fair enough.

"All right, I'll see you, then." You nod as you exit the cafe.

By this point, it was late morning, and the base was busier than ever as the bulk of the base personnel began reporting in for duty. This was also around the time patrols would be swapping out, meaning a number of shipgirls were milling about as well. You don't make any stops on the way and head straight for the admin building, where the Admiral's office was located.

Nobody bats an eye at you as you enter. Your status as a shipgirl has already been well established among the base staff, and shipgirls visiting the Admiral was not all that uncommon. The guards do shoot you a cursory glance, but that's all they do.

Finally, you reach the Admiral's office door, and stand in front of it for what seems like hours. You work up the courage to knock, the rapping of your fingers on the wood echoing throughout the hall.

"Come on." You hear the Admiral say.

You open the door, and see the Admiral working at his desk, alone. Mountains of paperwork cover the table as the Admiral, looking even more fatherly with his set of reading glasses on, slogs through it all.

"Ah, Hoel, I was meaning to speak with you." The Admiral calmly removes his reading glasses and gently sets them down on the desk, allowing him to look at you with his eyes unimpeded. "Do you know why?"

"I'm here to talk about Sam." You say sternly. You weren't trying to intimidate the Admiral or anything, but you wanted to communicate that you were serious about this issue.

"I figured you were here for that." The Admiral sighs, suddenly looking year older despite his already fairly advanced age. "Given your relationship with Sam, as well as having only recently been awakened, I suppose I can answer some of your questions pertaining to her."

"First off, why'd you chew out Sam over what she did?" You grit your teeth. "It seemed like she was doing what any other shipgirl would do."

"Ah, well, you see, Hoel." The Admiral stands up and looks out his window, the nice afternoon sun slowly filtering in. "I'm not questioning Sam's spirit or motivation. It's the... means that I take issue with."

"You mean how she loses control?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Ah, she must have told you, then." The Admiral's shoulders droop a bit. "Then I don't have to explain that."

The Admiral then turns back around and looks at you straight in the eye.

"Sam is... a bit of a troubled ship. Always was since I first met her. And I sense a bit of the same darkness in you, Hoel."

Ugh, the write-in is going to win and I need to say that it's terrible. It wasn't 'darkness' that led Taffy 3 win at Samar, it was bravery. The crews knew it wasn't just their lives on the line, but also the lives of the landing force they were supporting, and threw themselves headlong at a fleet of battleships and heavy cruisers to buy time. Calling it darkness is demeaning to those men who sacrificed themselves.

"Speaking frankly, sir." You ball your right hand into a fist instinctively. "That 'darkness' makes us who we are. It's what won us Samar, what lets us stand against foes we can't beat and laugh as we drag them down with us. Telling us it's wrong... hurts.

"I understand that." The Admiral nods with a sad gaze in his eyes. "Certainly, your experiences at Samar all you to draw out power most other shipgirls cannot fathom. Power that lets you defeat enemies many times your capability. It's rare gift, but one that comes at the price."

The Admiral calmly opens a drawer in his desk, taking out a cigar and lighting it. He takes a long draw from it before exhaling a small little cloud of gray smoke.

"Has Sam ever told you about the first time we met? The first time I saw her fight?"

"No, she never told me." You shake your head.

"Hm, I guess she really didn't have any reason to." The Admiral nods. "I suppose you already know that I'm not the first Admiral to be leading you all."

"Yes sir." You nod, wondering where the Admiral was trying to steer this conversation.

"The first time I saw Sam, we were attempting to tow a cruise ship full of refugees to shore." The Admiral's eyes lose their glint as he recalls the memory. "The admiral at the time, he didn't quite have the same views on shipgirls as I do. He saw them as nothing more than ships at his disposal, and he used them as such. He saw Sam's ability to beat the odds and took advantage of it."

"What do you mean by that?" You frown.

"You see, normally, that power you used, it only triggers when you're under a severe amount of stress, such as if you're being forced to face vastly superior forces to your own. Just like Samar."

"Just like Samar." You nod.

"The previous admiral made it a habit to send Sam out to battle, alone. Again and again and again. Under the stresses of these engagements, she was forced to surpass her limits more and more, and before she knew it, it became second nature for her."

"Isn't that a good thing?" You ask.

"No." The Admiral slams his palm down on his desk, rattling the assorted knicknacks and knocking over stacks of papers. "Once she starts redlining she can't stop. At that point, either the Abyssals must die or she will. There's no middle ground."

"And you think that's gonna happen to me?" You raise an eyebrow skeptically.

"I've already seen it happen." The Admiral spins the screen on his computer around to show you video footage of the Battle of San Diego. You could see the fuzzy aerial feed from a drone or helicopter as it recorded your battle with the Abyssal Water Demon. With no operational weapons left, you watched yourself resorting to your fists, punching and tearing relentlessly at the Abyssal before slamming live depth charges into her face at point blank range.

"Thankfully, Midway intervened before things could escalate." The Admiral grunts as he spins the monitor back towards himself. "But as you can see, redlining is no guarantee that you will prevail. Not only that, the strain, both on your body and your Rig, is great. I want you to remember that."

"Yes, sir." You mumble. "Is.. is that why you put Sam behind a desk?"

"That's part of the reason." The Admiral sighs and glances at the clock. "Oh dear, look at the time! I do believe you're supposed to be meeting Shen today?"

Crap! You totally forgot!

"Just remember what I said, Hoel. Unlike Sam, you have a choice on how to wield your strengths." The Admiral says. "By the way, you don't happen to know where Sam ran of to...?"

You're kind of half a mind not to tell him about Sam's condition so as to not embarrass her, but then you figure that at this point, the Admiral probably knows all of Sam's habits anyways. Plus, well, she really shouldn't be left passed out in that bar.

"She got drunk and passed out at Mulberry's." You explain. "Last I saw, she's still there."

Just a quick look before business with Shen.

>>Go see Shen.

WE've been suggested to a few times, it's time to take the hint.
>>
So everyone knows the 'refit' is part of that conspiracy fuckery we got a glimpse of a while ago, and we're avoiding it because of that, right?

At this point it's very nearly an order, so we should probably follow it.

"You're right, sir." You nod. "I'll head over right away."

You salute and leave the Admiral's office, briskly walking all the way to the armory, where it seemed to be much more cramped than usual, like there were more Rigs being stored in there or something. You decide not to think on it too hard as you search for Shen. He's easy enough to find, making adjustments to Anna's Rig as she pesters him about his taste in music.

"Oh! Hoel!" Anna waves. "Over here!"

"Ah, Hoel." Shen grunts as he gives you somewhat of a disgruntled look. "You certainly did quite the number on you Rig."

"Yeah, it did take a bit of damage..." You chuckle nervously.

"Not only that, but it was completely burned out from the inside." Shen narrows his eyes. "There's only one other ship I've seen that kind of damage on, and she was in the same battle with you."

"Yeah, I figured." You sigh. "Anyways, the Admiral and Captain mentioned something about upgrades?"

"Ah yes. One of our new initiatives, thanks to the data we gained from Midway." Shen nods. "In the past, most of our refits had only made incremental changes to shipgirls' Rigs. However, this time, we're going to be rolling out the first of our 'leapfrog' refits, designed to introduce radical capability upgrades. We believe that you and your sister have earned enough battlefield experience to make a refit possible."

"Niiiiice." You grin. "So what did my sisters choose?"

"Johnston choice extra armor plating." Shen explains. "Heerman received a powered limb upgrade, integrated directly into her Rig."

"...huh, okay." You nod. "So what kind of upgrades can I get?"

"Here, have a look." Shen says, passing you a clip board.

And that's it for tonight! I'll just leave a list of possible upgrades up here so you can all read through them and decide when the next thread comes around next week! In the meantime, don't forget Infinite Stars on Saturday!

Pic kinda related.

Thank you for running.

Sadness, it appears a moderate but expansive upgrade is out of the question.

Leaning towards one of:
5"/54 gun
Radar Suite
Drone Launcher or
Diesel Electric Engines

Sounds like this will fix the boiler problems we've been having.
>>
>>45672549
So are the upgrades gonna be one in each category, or do we only get to pick one?
>>
>>45672634
Johnston and Heerman only got one total, so it's likely we'll have to choose one and only one.
>>
I am fine with any of the upgrades *except* the Mark 54 torpedo. It has a much smaller warhead than the Mark 14, limiting its effectiveness against surface targets. Also, the current Mod 0 version is based on 20-year old recycled Mark 50 parts, and have the following problems:

•During FOT&E, the MK 54 MOD 0 demonstrated below threshold performance in many scenarios.

•Launch platforms are not always able to launch the MK 54 torpedo in a manner that can support an effective attack.

•The MK 54 torpedo does not always interface properly with the fire control systems on its launch platforms.

•There are several other classified problems.

So, uh, how about a deck-mounted Mark 48 ADCAP instead?
