>Horrible abominations made entirely out of negative emotions start to crawl out of people's minds.
>Toy weapons are very effective against them because they are charged with positive emotions, even a Super Soaker is more or less a acid gun.
>Soldiers go into battle with toy weapons against mind demons.
What should the bbeg of the campaign be?
>>
>>45660972
Some sort of incarnation of corrupted childhood innocence, maybe? Basically the villains from Little Fears, I guess.
>>
>>45660972
A corrupted Santa Clause.
>>
>>45661035
>>45661028
Well, it seems the general idea is that it has to be something held dear at child-hood, but is easy to corrupt. I agree with Santa Claus. Though I think if you could find some sort of beacon of 'Innocence' and corrupted that, regardless of what it was, it'd work nicely.
>>

>>

What does every child hold closest to their hearts? Most of the time it's their parents.
Maybe some kind of corrupted "Father of Humankind"?
>>
>>45660972
The Boogeyman
>>
>>45660972
A monster that resembles the adult your childhood you thought they would become. The PCs are average adults and then they have to fight their childhood dreams and hopes given form.
>>
>>45660972
>What should the bbeg of the campaign be?
An autistic neckbeard whose misery and self hate brought the mind demons into being in the first place.
He throws printed futanari and NTR hentai charged with his own brand of faggotry at the brave heroes who dare face him.
>>
>>45661147
So like...astronauts, cowboys, and princesses, all demonized and evil and shit? That could be cool.
>>
>>45661028
>>45661071

There was a disney channel movie where the bad guy was the boogeyman. However, in-setting a boogeyman was a child's imaginary friend who the child was forced to stop believing in too early (Or something like that).

I think that works for the kind of setting OP is in the market for.

Personally I think the best would be a giant indistinguishable bloody mishmash of different animals. I seem to remember one violent animal cartoon movie freaked out a bunch of kids good, and most kids know to be afraid of a nasty looking animal if it shows its teeth and is loud.

Santa on the other hand is only going to be scary to the really innocent kids
>>
>>45661147
This is perfect. They are everything you could have been and more.
>>
Damn it, I'd watch this movie.
>>
>>45661147
When defeated or closer to defeat the dream adults start acting more and more like children (namely crying and throwing tantrums) and it ends with them reverting back into a crying 4-12 year old.
>>
I would probably go with some kind of teacher, maybe the head teacher and the various other teachers are the BBEG's henchmen.
School is pretty much where childhood/innocence goes to die, where the majority of negative emotions come from. There are so many things to use; the math(s) teacher that makes you feel like an idiot for answering 54 to 7 times 8, the gym/p.e. teacher that doesn't care when you get hurt or even laughs at you for being a wuss, not to mention bullies and the sudden social pressures.

Though I have a feeling what anons will post with whatever caused them the most childhood trauma.
>>
>>45661515
Why not a office building? After school comes work and the streets, where whatever last shards of innocence you had are wiped away.
>>

Poor grammar aside, that actually does raise some interesting ideas. If childhood weaponry works against the abominations, would childhood defense mechanisms be equally effective? Wait if children action figures would be for good summoners, then what about ones associated with negative emotions? You know like 40k minis because grimdarkness of the far future.
>>
>>45662562
I don't know about this.
KND has a lot in common with this, but they never made the mistake of demonizing parents by making them automatically the bad guys. In fact, most adults were pretty cool guys, and operative's parents tended to be, while embarassing to their kids, truly invested in their kids' safety, wellbeing and future. Evil adults were a minority.
In a setting like this, I imagine that parents are the seen-it-all I-remember-when-I-was-your-age old master types who encourage their PC sons and daughters to keep fighting the good fight.

Having a PC's child along for the ride would obviously be out of the question, though. The whole setting is about reviving your inner child - having an actual child along would be god mode.

the way I see it its the same as having nerf guns and supersoakers harm the bad guys: all you have to do is believe. A toy gun will kill a mind demon by shooting pew pew lasers. A teddy bear will come to life, turn real-bear-sized (but still cuddly and soft) and maul a mind demon with his plushy claws.

Sure we did. I wouldn't call the capricious child-like love of destruction and violence pure and innocent though.

I wouldn't call the sweatshops that most toys were made in very innocent or positive.

I wouldn't call the warehouses where they lie for weeks childlike or joyful.

I wouldn't call the soul-killing minimum-wage Black-Friday-Death-Causing big box stores they sit in any positive word.

And even when they get bought, they're just a bright orange distraction. Something that the rich kid gets because his parents know they can't buy love, but they can supplement it. Something to be played with for a few days, then tossed aside as novelty wears off, batteries die, or parts are lost. Especially when a new distraction comes along
>>
>>45666973
That actually gives me a idea, perhaps the mind demons are being brought into existence because they are not only negative emotions, but also crushed dreams? Toys thrown aside in favor of old ones as the positive happiness within them begin to long for the god times again and slowly corrupt. Eventually, it becomes flat out evil and can manifest into a brain monster if it happens in one place for to long.
The result of youth being left behind, never to be regained and is thus angered at all else.
In other words, innocence going through awkward phase.
>>
>>45666973
>Sure we did. I wouldn't call the capricious child-like love of destruction and violence pure and innocent though.
Why not? They don't know why it's bad, so isn't that innocence? They're not doing it to hurt people (unless they're bullies, which is a different situation) so isn't that purity?
>I wouldn't call the sweatshops that most toys were made in very innocent or positive.

Wow, way to make this bitter. Some of us actually had good parents who didn't buy us things to make us love them because the love was already there, they just wanted us to have fun.
But you bring up a good point: maybe the only toys that'll work for the PCs are That One Toy, the one you could always fall back on to be fun. Like Woody and Buzz for Andy.
>>
>>45662848
How are these villains though? It's hard to feel angry at "you but successful" unless your a hideously bitter person inside. The nightmare doppelgangers should be the epitome of what your dreams arent. You were gonna grow up to be president? Well your nightmare double is gonna get there by making empty promises, bribing his way into power, and generally using his power to benefit himself at the expense of everyone around him. You were gonna be a scientist? Well your double is a dirty one. He prove or disprove anything for a price. He vivisects puppies and kittens to figure out his to make a better lipstick. The only way to stop these nightmares is to become the best version of you you always wanted to be. You run against the nightmare president and beat his dirty politics with truth and honesty. As much as I'd like to do that, it's inevitable that you're gonna run into someone's magical realm if you're playing with humanoids.
Unless you are playing something deep abstract - like you're all Cubes of hitpoints fighting other Cubes of hitpoints and your equipment is literally "Does between 1 and 6 damage" given form.
Put in a woman, someone is gonna try to waifu her. Guaranteed. Doesn't matter if she's a loli or a granny or a controlling bitch or a helpless maiden or a kind nun or an evil murderess, someone is going to waifu her, and then spend 2 sessions asking you to describe her shoes and her footwear.

He is then devoured by the manifestation of his repressed hatred and fear of humanity, who turns into a mighty boogeyman insisting that this is the way things have to be.

I like the idea of the tossed-aside and neglected toys being the corrupted ones. Maybe that's why the army sort of failed and it's up to the PCs? They tried to contract the 'best' and most shiny producers in China but there was no love or care in those, so they were weak.

Toys that were either handmade with care or toys that spent their time through someone's entire childhood (you know, the one you always came back to) are the most powerful. Toys that are both are things of legend. Also good reason why you can't just mass produce monster-killers for an easy way out of the crisis.

Granted, a mass-produced toy can still be strong, it just has to have had a lot of childhood happiness poured into it over a long period of time (which doesn't often happen because they're prone to breaking).

I'm going to use Dreams as a placeholder for now.

Dreams that were poorly thought out are mercurial, quickly changing form and powers, but are fragile as concepts. Using mundane tools related to their root cripples them. ie. whack the mad scientist with tongs, put on a cape and punch out superman

Dreams based upon hopes are the strongest when faced alone, but the support of allies and the use of environment can tip the scales.

Dreams built upon cursing the world are fought with toys filled with positive emotions. But if you are so much as apathetic from constant fighting, you will find that maybe bringing a gun would have helped.

Nightmare Musician is exactly what every soccer mom from the 80s and 90s thought of Death Metal bands: Subliminal messages in albums, intentional breaking down of morals, corruption and selling out, etc etc.

Nightmare Astronaut pushes people's buttons and manipulates the system to get HIMSELF in charge of critical and expensive missions ahead of everyone else. He names anything discovered after him and him alone, and a danger to himself and others... and to the continued funding for the space programs should there be a catastrophic failure.
>>
>>45672244
That actually would be neat: a simple stick is more potent than any fancy flashing toy if the person wielding it is attached enough to it and thus invests more of his imagination in it.
>>
At first when the abominations come, the hero of the story is distraught.
He has no idea what to do.
Starts fighting back with some real weapons.
Eventually someone helps him out and explains how he needs to use toy weapons in conjunction with his imagination to defeat the monsters.
He says it's bullshit, but fine and starts fighting.
As the story progresses, the party wields crappy and simpler weapons.
At the final battle, the hero tosses aside his weapon (which at this point is just a stick) and uses pure imagination to defeat the BBEG

Ok, so, classes and archetype time!

>Toy Soldier
>>Ninja: Sneeky beeki who uses blades like Nerf Swords
>>Cowboy: Uses foam revolvers and pistols
>>Soldier: Specializes in Rifles and heavy foam Guns and explosives
>Imagimancer:
>>Wizard: Creates spells and effects from Imagination
>>Summoner: Calls upon the powers of Action figures, stuffed animals and the like to aid them
>Lego Engineer
>>Imagineer: Creates marvelous, Ork tech like inventions out of bricks and brings them to life
>>Secret Agent: Creates all sorts of gadgets and things to use (Think KND 2x4 tech)

Thoughts?

Maybe have a 'structured' duelist that follows the rules of the card game (to some extent) and a crazier one that throws down whatever and imitates the cartoon.
Or a sliding scale; wizard-sorcerer-wild mage in decreasing structuredness.
>>
>>45676291
>>45676472

Ok, we can do that.

>>Wild Mage (Imgaimancer): Uses wild bursts of Imagination power, usually centered around things like card games or things like green army men, using their power in sometimes uncontrollable bursts

Tantrumancer: throws a fit to disrupt and weaken enemies that have an authority role(fathers, mothers, cops, bosses.)

Pure roleplay class.

>>Beserker (Toy Soldier): Uses large foam weapons like battleaxes and maces for furious attacks at the cost of protection. Calls upon the power of the Tantrum for extra damage.

That's why they would be good low level weapons. Turning simple things into effective toys would only be possible with high Imagination. Like a stick into an awesome rifle.
>>
>>45676791
We need a name for the overall social archetypes first tho. Cool kid could be a trait, sure, but then what would we name the social classes?

Maybe we can have the most depressing countries like third world countries be completely overran with mind demons?
>>
>>45676834
Clique?
>>
You're all neglecting one, very important toy, one that's been part of /tg/ from the outset, the thing that set all of us on this path.

The book.

How many hours have you spent reading, do you think? How many times have you read Dr. Seuss's books, how much love and kindness have you poured into them? As you grew, whose adventures did you follow, and which books did you aspire to read so you wouldn't have to wait for Dad to read you to sleep? Which heroes patrolled your dreams, and which tales did you take on with wooden sword and trash-can-lid shield? How many villains did you vanquish in your mind, fighting alongside the hero?

The Libriomancer is a powerful warrior, capable of channeling the belief of hundreds that the story is real somewhere into a physical form. In a unique twist, his powers come not from his own imagination (although that plays no small part), but in the belief of hundreds that the hero is here.
>>
>>45676812
Tinker Toys.
>>
>>45676862
I don't know, aren't cliques high school stuff? We are talking about being kids again. Maybe Popular could be the trait, while Cool Kid is the class?

>>45676876
Holy crap. This is fucking great anon.
>>
>>45676837
impossible
those are the only ones with veteran child soldiers
>>
>>45676930
This is about innocence and hope, things in the third world is pretty fucked. Not to mention being a child soldier tends to fuck up your childhood.
>>
>>45676927
It's attributed to highschools, but clique on itself just means a group or class of people who congregate while technically isolating themselves from other groups and create their own social standards.
>>
>>45676969
Third world countries would have some especially powerful Nightmares then, likely more visceral and bloodthirsty. First world countries would have powerful Nightmares that would be more insidious, like the lying cheating President-you that comes into existence.
>>
>>45676984
I feel like kids, especially when younger, don't do that. I would just go up to people I didn't know in kindergarten and just ask if they wanted to play with me. The Cool Kid would be someone that everyone wanted to play with.
>>
>>45662999

>It's attributed to highschools, but clique on itself just means a group or class of people who congregate while technically isolating themselves from other groups and create their own social standards.
No, a clique is really just any social group of people, or group of similar objects in a more general sense. In graph theory, for example, a clique is a set of vertices that are all connected to one another.

>>
>>45677072
>Injustice, horrors among us.
>>45677093
They're demons anon, they want to eat your face. Most of them anyway, there might be one that's "good" due to some kid's dream/wish. A horror that was spawned by a dream for their to be peace between the two races. That turns out to be just as bad as any other dream horror.

Stats? Stats!

Spunk
Imagination
Nostalgia
Spoiled
Courage
Hugs
>>
>>45677227
I feel like Hugs would be a healing power.

I like the others.

Imagination: One of your most important stats. Determines effectiveness of special powers for Imagimancer.
Spunk: How strong your personality is. Important for Wild Mages and Cool Kids.
Nostalgia: Your connection to your childhood. Health and major stat for Toy Soldiers.
Spoiled could be a negative trait.
Courage: How well you stand up to the Nightmares. Also important for Toy Soldiers. Damage soak stat?
>>
>>45677227
>>45677286
imho Imagination is too important for "just" a special power of the Imaginamancer.
It should be like luck- a point in Imagination grants a minor bonus to every stat/roll
>>
>>45677322
Or it could be like POW in CoC, important to everyone, but a bit more important for some characters than others.

An example is that a Toy Soldier doesn't need to Imagine his/her weapons, as Nerf Guns are pretty straightforward. An Imagimancer however, needs to be able to visualize what is going to happen and believe it will happen.
>>
>>45677155
Wait I just realized, what about wet dreams? How would they work?
>>
>>45677662
Why. Why did you have to open the door to that?

If I had to say, they probably are like Succubi/Incubi, draining your Nostalgia by dragging you from your inner childhood to your adulthood.
>>
>>45676472
>Maybe have a 'structured' duelist that follows the rules of the card game (to some extent) and a crazier one that throws down whatever and imitates the cartoon.
I hate that this is still a meme. I mean, it's almost entirely exclusive to Duelist Kingdom, and the card game didn't even exist in the real world yet, so there literally no rules to work from.
>>
>>45677701
So that one magical realm guy? Oh boy.
Also here comes some nice dubs, probably.
>>
>>45677072
There's probably a limit on how strong Nightmares can be based on how core that dream was to that person.

Kid that wanted to be Superman after watching a movie? Not too tough.

Kid from a broken home that basically taught himself morality by reading Superman comics from the dusty recesses of a library? SHIT'S FUCKED.

>>45677322
I dunno if it should be a "Bonus" kinda stat. Maybe more of a sliding scale? Like, having TOO HIGH an Imagination stat can bring benefits and consequences.

Bear with me here.

Obviously having low-Imagination can make it hard to use even something like a Nerf gun, but too high? You start to lose touch, start to retreat into "your own little world". That sort of thing.

Shouldn't be something that hurts at moderate levels of Imagination, but you get the idea.

>>45677662
Shh, that's puberty stuff. By then most Kids have started shunning toys in the name of "that's for little kids!".
>>
>>45677774
>Shh, that's puberty stuff. By then most Kids have started shunning toys in the name of "that's for little kids!".
But that's the point. Bring out certain fantasies so you ignore more important ones.
>>
>>45677769
Kids don't care about that. They just want to look cool anon.

>>45677774
This is a good idea. Higher Imagination leads to you being more like the hermit wizard, not wanting to interact with others in lieu of talking to Imaginary Friends.

And it could make you more susceptible to damage, unless you protect yourself with a shielding charm or power of some sort

>>45677798
That's what I was trying to get at with the Nostalgia Drain.
>>
>>45661742
>plus to me working is less of a flood of negative emotions and more a whole bunch of grey emotionless numbness.

>Not finding a job you love doing

Come on, it's not like school where you're forced by the state to take classes you don't enjoy with awful people you hate. There's no excuse for not finding a job that you actually like doing and take pride in.
>>
>>45677369
