Right. Mental checklist.

Uniform. You quickly pat your chest, finding the soft fabrics of your school uniform. Jacket, collar, buttons, blouse, skirt, pantyhose, panties, bra, glasses, hat, shoes, everything appears to be in order.

Dufflebag. Two changes of clothes. Two changes of underwear. Toiletries such as toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, lotion, shampoo and conditioner, towel…

No bathing suit. School’ll provide one.

You are Elodie Rosetta Zumwalt, the only child of Elliot and Elizabeth Zumwalt. Right now you were about to board the Lafayette Girls Academy. Or more rather, about to head into the bus that would take you inside the Lafayette Girls Academy. You were running the mental checklist over and over in your head. It was the only thing that could keep you from bursting in excitement or breaking down nervously from the stress. Everything that has occurred in your childhood has led up to this moment! Boarding an Academyship, and becoming one of its Officers too!

Well, except for… well, being poor. And living in a crummy apartment. In a crummy neighborhood. And having to go to a crummy school. With actually relatively decent people.

You yawn. Early morning. You check your watch. 5:00 AM on the day. Naval Studies Students were supposed to report early. And you weren’t the only one standing outside LGA’s APPS (Academyship Program Processing Station) next to the dock. With you was a small crowd of other Naval Studies students with family and friends, along with your parents as well.

“Excited?” asks Dad. He grins happily, patting your shoulder.

“Oh, sure,” you say quickly.

“Did you make sure you have everything, El?” asks Mom.

“Yes, Mom.” You quickly put your dufflebag down. “If you want, I can-“

“No, no, no need!” says Dad very quickly. He coughs, tugging on the collar of his work jumpsuit. He was a factory worker. Mom was a food cart attendant. Livable wage you suppose. You got this far didn’t you? “Whooo… I haven’t felt tension like this since we had to visit the in-laws.” You roll your eyes, shoving your hands in your pockets. Mom nudges Dad. “What? Oh! Uh, El! Listen, sweetheart. Your Mom and I have uh… We scrounged together some cash.”

You hold up your hand, stopping him. “Dad, I’m salaried, remember?”

“She’s making more than I am,” mutters Mom. Dad elbows Mom in the arm, silencing her. “What your father means, sweetpea, is that we got you a parting gift.” You blink. Really? You grin happily, rubbing your hands. Mom reaches into her purse, then hands it over to you.

It’s a smartphone! You gasp, holding it up. It’s an two year old obsolete smartphone but it’s a smartphone! No wonder they told you not to bring your cellphone! Ooooh! These guys! “We figured that our little precious something needed something to blend in with others. Like it?”

You quickly hug them both. “Love it!” You hear the honking of a bus coming down the road. Everyone quickly starts saying their final goodbyes. For you, this is probably the last time you’ll get to see your parents in person for months. So you have to make this count.

“We love you, honey,” says Dad. “Be a good girl, okay?”

“I will, thank you, you two.” You gently kiss both on their cheeks, then hug them again tightly. “Don’t worry.” You step back, nodding to them. “My grades are going to be impeccable!” You hold up the smartphone, smiling to them. “And I will pay back this smartphone in full too, I promise that much, and I will-“

The bus honks. You all look over to see the lot empty, save for you three. Oh. Oh fuck. “You better go,” says Mom. You nod, kissing Mom and Dad on the cheek again before hurrying onto the bus. You hurry onto one of the last remaining seats way in the back, then settle down next to the girl. You lean over to see your Mom and Dad waving goodbye, along with all the other Moms and Dads, brothers and sisters, boyfriends and occasional girlfriends too.

“Next stop, Lafayette Girls Academy.”

All the girls aboard the bus are busy gossiping and introducing themselves to each other as the bus moves. Maybe you should too! You look to your left to see a very tall girl with stringy blonde hair sitting next to you. Huh, she’s wearing the summer uniform. “Hi!” You offer your hand, and she looks over, surprised. “I’m Elodie Zumwalt.”

She nods, smiling, then turns to look out the window.

… Oh. Okay. You stare ahead. Maybe she’s shy.

Once you boarded the ship, it was time to get your papers processed. Dozens of lines were set in the reception area, where freshmen are sat or standing waiting to have their papers finalized. You didn’t see where the girl you sat next to on the bus was, but oh well. You hope she’s doing fine. Maybe she’s an upperclassmen, only upperclassmen were wearing the summer uniform, unless she was stupid enough to spend 500$ on it as a freshman.

You hope not.

You step up to the desk, where a Senior Naval Studies Student smiles happily at you from behind a computer and tons of papers. “Hi, there! Name and Serial ID?”

“Elodie Rosetta Zumwalt, EZ1246947.” The student quickly types it all in the computer.

“Oooh kay.” She nods slowly, brushing some locks out of her hair. “Papers.” You hand her your papers. “Mhm. Just wait a minute.”

You check your watch. She was still typing, yawning a little.

> Quietly wait for her to finish.

You tap your fingers together, silently waiting for her to finish. Everything on your papers should be in order.

Wait.

Maybe they got your bloodtype wrong. You put in A, but maybe they might think you’re A+! Well, with your GPA, that would actually be kind of funny, but not when you’re bleeding to death!

No, wait.

Worse.

They think your middle name is Rosie! People refer to you as Rosie sometimes. Usually those black kids that hung around the stairwell back in Middle School! Well, they stopped using it to bully you and actually used it affectionately when you started tutoring them. But… the implication is there now! It’s in your head!

Ah, this is a disaster!

“Are you okay?” asks the girl. You flinch, a bit. “You are red as a tomato.” You didn’t even realize you were blushing like this. FUCK. You’re blowing it! Everything is blown! Nooooo… “Relax, all freshmen go through that phase where they think they’re going to get kicked out before they even get on. So you’re Elodie Rosetta Zumwalt, right?”

You cough. “Y… yes.”

“Alright, your papers are pretty much in order.” She hands the papers back to you, paperclipped and stamped with APPROVED FOR DUTY on it. “However one last thing. You already declared your major but just for vocal confirmation, what was your major again?”

> Logistics.

“Logistics,” you state. Your Dad talked you out of Engineering purely because he thought the work was too dangerous. You figured it wasn’t too big of a deal anyway, and Logistics seems to handle a bit of everything anyway.

“Ouch.” The girl frowns a bit. “Well, good luck with the paper work. By the way though, just as a reminder. Just because your Major is Logistics, doesn’t mean that your work will purely involve it. As an Officer, you’re required to be at least familiar with almost every Major we have available. It’s sort of a… nonspecialization thing I guess?”

“I understand,” you say quickly. “Is there anything else?”

She grins. “All set! Hold out your hand!” You hold out your hand. And on the back of it, she stamps APPROVED. “There you go!” She holds up a keyring containing the keys to get inside of your room. “And here are the keys to your room. It’s Room D52 in Block 6, Deck 10. I would suggest you report there and unpack because...” She checks the time on her computer. “Lunch time in about four hours from now, there’ll be a banquet welcoming all the new Officers aboard LGA. We’re getting a new Captain this year too! So look forward to that!”

“Thank you,” you say quickly again. You hurry to get out of the line.

Wow. Your own room.

Well, technically yours and someone else’s. You hope they’re nice.

You hurry out of the reception area, and just barely catch the crowded tram to Block 6. You grin happily, holding onto a handhold as the tram takes you down there.

You gently open the door to your room. You hit the lights, and find it cold, sterile, with two beds built into the wall, and a desk set for work as well.

Look at all this room though!

You drop your dufflebag, grinning. There’s so much room! And the ceiling is flat too! Your old room was built out of an attic! You happily grin, laughing a little. So much room for things to do! You gently lay yourself down flat. Wow, you can lie down and none of your feet or your hands touch the walls! This is amazing! “Haha!” You roll over onto your back, happily laughing. “Haha, hahaha!”

You hear someone clear their throat. You bolt upright, then look at the door to see another girl, grinning nervously. She brushes back some of her dark red hair and smiles at you. “… am I uh… should I come back?”

You slowly stand up, and dust your uniform off. “Erm. Hi there.” She smiles, giggling a little. “Sorry, I got a bit carried away.” You take deep breath, then gently let it all out. “I mean, this is way bigger than my room back home.”

“I bet,” she says as she carts in a few bags of luggage. She holds out her hand, and you shake it. “Winona, Winona Griffiths. Engineering!” Oh? Neat. “You?”

“Elodie Zumwalt,” you say. “Logistics.”

She points at your hat, smiling. “And judging by that hat, you’re an Officer! Nice! I get to board with my boss! Hehehe!” She pulls one particularly strange bag out from the stack, then unzips it. “So, are you here to join Tankery too?”

You shrug. “Well, I guess, if they’ll have me.” Tankery is what normal people do, right? And you figure you can build up a good resume if you have a sport like Tankery underneath Gertrude Pool on there. Besides, it looks like fun. Maybe you’ll make friends!

You gasp quietly. You’re making a friend right now! You smile happily, shaking your wrists in anticipation. “Neato! Me too! I’m a little disappointed Gertrude Pool hasn’t introduced the Unlimited scene to LGA, but I can settle with classic too.” She looks back at you, concerned. “You’re okay with pets, right?” You nod. “Okay, good, because Cuddles is a very special kind of pet to me.”

Oh? A puppy? A cat?

“Ta-da!”

It flicks its tongue at you, staring at you with a puppy mouth and round eyes. “… A snake?” you say, unperturbed. That’s kind of disappointing.

She nods. “Yeah! You don’t mind, right? Cuddles is very cuddly!” It slowly bends itself back towards Winona. “Awww, he’s terrified of you!” She holds Cuddles up to her face, booping his snout with her nose. “Don’t worry, she isn’t going to eat you, mummy won’t awwow that. Heehee!”

… Okay. You head over to your dufflebag, then pull out a poster for yourself. You’ve been saving up for a poster to display for morale purposes! “Oh?” She looks over at you. “Is that a Tankery poster?” You nod, slowly unraveling it and pasting it next to the bunkbeds. “Wow.”

Who is the poster of?

> Oryola Kuznetsov, Kursk Girls Boarding School Captain, three time High School All-Star

“Ooooh.” Cuddles slithers up Winona’s sleeve, poking out of her collar and next to her neck. Winona says, “Oryola Kuznetsov, eh? She’s pretty good!” The poster was depicting Oryola buttoned out of her signature elite ISU-152, kicking her leg up on the cupola next to the pintle-mounted DShk HMG, smiling as she looks to the camera. Below it was her printed signature and the Kursk Girls Boarding school logo. Oryola was filthy, covered in grease and muck, but her smile was brilliant.

“Yeah,” you say. “I mean, it’s probably not going to be a popular poster I’ll admit, since they knocked LGA out of the ITL World Tournament last year but… I like her. She’s got patience, it’s a zen kind of thing I guess.”

“I really like Perrine,” says Winona. She slaps a poster of Perrine Hobart sticking out of her Churchill AVRE on the other side of the beds. The AVRE is firing one of its shells at something off screen, while Perrine smiles through a pair of goggles and a helmet. “She’s so creative and so innovate! I can’t wait to see her in the NATO Tournament!”

“NATO?” you ask.

“Yeah,” says Winona. “The North Atlantic Tankery Organization. It’s a pretty new league, and it’s a lot more competitively balanced one might say but…” She checks her watch. “Oh, look at that. It’s time for breakfast!” She pats her belly. “I’m going to hit the mess. Wanna come with?”

“Yeah, follow me, let’s go.” You step out of the room.

“Follow you?” She blinks in confusion. “Oh, right. Officer.” She places Cuddles in his tank next to the bed, and shuts it tight. “Got it, ma’am!” She clicks her heels, saluting you. You try to suppress a smile. Someone’s actually saluting you! Oooh, that’s precious! Suddenly, there’s a clicking noise. “Huh? What was that?”

“What was what?” you say as you carefully put your smartphone in your blouse pocket out of sight. You’re saving that picture for later. “Come on, let’s go. I’ve memorized the maps they gave us of this place, I know the fastest way down to mess.”

-

-

Thankfully for you, the food was free. You picked out a nice looking batch of apple slices, a sandwich, some chicken nuggets, a large pile of fries, orange slices, gravy, and a side of salad as well. Winona and a few other girls as well were staring at you as you walked out of the line. Winona steps up next to you, with her much smaller platter. “Erm. A-… are you really going to eat that much?”

You nod. “It’s free food. My parents encourage me to eat free food.”

“Yeah but… Aren’t you afraid you’ll get fat?” she asks as the two of you try to scout out a table. The mess hall wasn’t just one, it was one of many aboard the ship. It was still a gigantic place, almost like a mall foodcourt. The first and second floors had many different types of food stands available, and a hole on the second floor opened up to stairs and elevators up to that level from the first. It was definitely like a mall foodcourt. You find a table for yourself and Winona.

“Nah, it’s fine,” you say. Truth be told, you were a little underweight. Well, embarrassingly, except for one area. But the dark colors of your uniform were disguising your form well. And it seems no one has noticed your bust yet.

And thank God.

Winona chews on her sandwich. “You know, if we’re going to join the Tankery team together, maybe we’ll get to be on the same crew!” You smile happily. You wouldn’t mind that. “Though, I don’t know many tanks that are crewed by two people, and even then, one of us is really going to get the shaft.”

“Yeah,” you say. “I hear a lot of horror stories about the T-70.”

Winona shudders at that. “I can’t imagine gunning, commanding, and loading at the same time. So, tell me about yourself, Ellie.” You blink, tilting your head. “Your parents cheap out on the smartphone?” Oh. “Don’t worry, my parent’s don’t give me too much allowance anyway, had to rake a lot of leaves and shovel a lot of snow to save up for my first Tankette or two. But, we live pretty comfortably.”

Oh no.

She thinks you’re rich!? She tilts her head, smiling at you. She’s going to pity you!

>On March 26, 1944 Sergeant Alexander Pegov of the 3rd Guards tank army, commanding a single T-70, saw a column of approximately 18 German tanks approaching. He took an ambush position hidden by foliage and then he waited. After a German PzKpfw V “Panther” tank came within 150 to 200 meters, the T-70 suddenly opened fire with APCR ammunition and set fire to one Panther and immobilized another. The knocked out Panthers blocked the road while the T-70 retreated. Pegov was promoted to a lieutenant and decorated as a Hero of the Soviet Union.

> “Uh, actually, my family’s pretty poor.”

“Actually…” You motion her closer. “My family is pretty poor.” She gasps, holding her hands over her mouth in shock and guilt. “The money they used to buy the smartphone was all they could scrounge together for it. I’m from a pretty poor neighborhood in Trenton.”

“Oh my gosh!” She squints, pouting deeply. “I’m so sorry for judging! You poor thing!” SHE’S PITYING YOU AAAAHHHH “Oh, I should’ve realized this sooner! I knew there was something weird about you rolling around on the floor like that, do you not have much space back home?” You shake your head. “Oooh, that’s so sad! I mean, I’m a Naval Studies student because I wanted to skip the tuition, but you HAVE to skip tuition because- oh my gosh!”

“Yeah, yeah, let’s-“ You cough. “Let’s keep it between us. Okay?” She nods. “And… try not to bring it up too much, okay? I don’t like it when people pity me about it.”

She pats your shoulder, nodding. “I won’t.” She checks her watch. “Oh, we have to eat quick! The Captain is gonna welcome us all in about an hour!” Uh oh. You furiously start to shove as much food and drink into your mouth as possible. Winona does the same, piledriving food into her mouth as well.

-

-

Ugh, that was a mistake. Your belly must have ballooned a few inches. You feel like you’re going to vomit. Forget it, you just need a few minutes. But as you and Winona drag your asses into the lecture hall, you’re reminded of the size of the Naval Studies student body. More than 25,000 students in the Naval Studies line of LGA. The Lecture hall is split up like a sports stadium, with many tiers and levels of seating all focused on a single stage way in the back. “Officers sit in front!” says an usher.

“That’s me,” you say.

Winona pats your back, smiling. “Meet you outside!” You smile back, and shuffle yourself in with the rest of the officers. Finally, you sit down amongst your peers.

The noise dies down as everyone starts to find their seats. The lights go dark, and a single spotlight shines on the podium on the stage. Coming up to the stage now are several Naval Studies Officers. One of them stands up to the podium. “Stand up!” You all stand in one motion. “Raise your right hand.” You all raise your right hand. “Recite the Pledge!”

“I am a Naval Studies Student. My duty first and foremost is to my Academy. I will be courageous, I will be honorable, I will be intelligent, and I will be wise in all of my actions. I will venture into the oceans with an explorer’s spirit and a scholar’s mind. I will never give up on myself or my fellow students. I will never cheat, lie, steal, or betray my Academy. My Academy is my home. I pledge to do my duty. I am a Naval Studies Student.”

“You may sit!” You all sit down. “Welcome aboard the Lafayette Girls Academy. For those returning, we hope to see you at work soon. For those of you just joining us, welcome aboard. Your first week will be a designated vacation, to allow you to adjust to the environment. We highly encourage you shadow the veterans, they know what works and what doesn't.”

A few girls next to you whisper to each other. “Wow, the Captain really knows how to give a speech.”

“That’s not the Captain, that’s her XO,” says the other.

“Without further introduction, I present to you the new Captain of Lafayette Girls Academy Naval Studies, Captain Amy Spruance!” Everyone starts applauding the arrival of the Captain.
>>

Until they actually see her. The applaud starts dying down as you see quite possibly the tiniest teenager walk up to the podium. She brushes some of her brown hair back with her hand.

You bite your lip, trying to suppress a giggle. Her hands don’t even reach out of her sleeves. That’s adorable!

She steps up to the podium, her head barely poking above it. “Welcome to LGA, everybody! I just want to say, thank you, freshmen, for choosing this illustrious ship to be your Academy of service.”

“She’s so tiny!” whispers one of the Officers.

“Her hands don’t even leave her sleeves!” says another. “She’s adorable!” A few more whispers break out amongst the Officers.

Comparing a Light Tank against ones above its weight class is rather an unfair assessment of the design.

That's like people who say the Sherman was shit due to the 'superiority' of German armor. Which is not entirely true at all.

The T-34 was not a very good tank. The design concept was sound but IIRC the ergonomics inside the tank were horrible.

By quality you mean over engineered and I disagree with you by class as well.

Light Tank: The American and to the lesser extent the Russians with the T-70 and M5 Stuart design.

Medium Class: Germany was more or less on Par with the Americans with the Panzer IV and the Sherman.

Heavy Class:Might be the only quality Germany shines through because not a lot of effort went into the heavy tank design or were rather ego trips by the warring leaders.

Do you know what a Medium Tank's purpose is?

It is supposed to balance out the 3 main components of a tank, Armor, Speed, and Armament. Which the Sherman did well on all three accounts.

Mostly because both of those would be expensive to do well, which, again would have defeated the entire purpose of the Sherman.

75mm gun wa too weak for most engagements against anything even remotly well armored, this was actually recognized a s adesign flaw already in WW2 but due to the problems with the few they tried equipping with 90mm cannons they never bothered trying to fix it.
The Sherman was infamous for its constant engine failures. And its armor was too thin for even the lightest of guns.

The Sherman was something that was used due to being mass producable, not because it was by itself a good tank, that was irrelevant.

> Shush them, the Captain’s talking.

You lean over, pressing your finger to your lips and shushing them. They all nod, going back to listening to the Captain’s speech. The Captain continues with, “When I was a little girl…” A few giggles go out here and there. “I dreamed of one day getting to be part of the Academyship program, and look at me now! Captain of my very own Academyship! All of you have probably dreamt the same thing. Some of you are probably here to take part in the Tankery program, or the Skycraft program too. But first and foremost, we need to acknowledge someone of great merit to us. Elodie Rosetta Zumwalt!”

… what

The spotlight suddenly shine on you and everybody around you. “Woohoo!” Winona stands up, clapping for you. “Yeah, Ellie!”

The Captain holds out her hand for you. “Come aboard the stage!” … you weren’t informed of this. You slowly stand up, and gently push your way through the crowd of very confused and some what envious-looking Officers. Oh nooo… You walk up next to the Captain, and the height difference is very striking. If she crashed into you, someone might call you out on breastfeeding in public! Ugh, this is terrible! “Ensign Elodie Rosetta Zumwalt is our first and currently only Officer who is salaried on the Academyship’s dime. I’ve heard your story, raised in the rough neighborhoods of Trenton, you worked your poor little butt off until you not only were accepted into this school, but also now are part of the Officer’s Club!” She reaches into her blouse pocket. You noticed that her uniform is all white, save for some black trim on the skirt and black pantyhose as well. “Elodie, I’d like to present you with your first payment of 200 dollars!” She reaches into her blouse, and places an envelope in your hand. “Every Friday, you will receive 200 dollars to spend as you wish!”

Sure. That was my entire point afterall, the Sherman wasn't a good tank, it was a sufficient tank. And thats all it was ever supposed to be.

Its not like it was bad due to sheer incompetence.

If you want to get the opinion of a unbiased third party, look at how the Soviet Union treated it's WWII Lend-Lease Shermans.

It put them in the 1st Guards Mechanized Corps, 3rd Guards Mechanized Corps, and 9th Guards Mechanized Corps. The USSR, with it's T-34-85, JS-2, and other "best" tanks of the war, exclusively used the Sherman tanks in its elite armored formations in 1944-1945. These formations received the best of the best equipment-wise and logistically speaking, and that meant M-4s, both the 75mm and HV 76mm version.

Any tank which served for decades afterwards in multiple wars cannot be that bad. In comparison, the Panther was tried out by the French army after World War II, and deemed unacceptable due to unsolvable problems with its drive and tracks.

For more information, this account of a veteran of the 9th Guards Mechanized Corps sheds more light on how the Soviets viewed the M4. Dmitriy Loza

Sometimes, 'sufficient' means better.

Not to mention it is a very versatile chassis, as Israeli has shown. Sure Israeli forced to upgun Shermans because they are cockblocked from buying Patton for a while, but they still used them with good effect.

>If you want to get the opinion of a unbiased third party, look at how the Soviet Union treated it's WWII Lend-Lease Shermans.
Besides how nonsensical the claim of the Sowjet union being a "unbiased third party" when they got them basically for free is.
You do realise the flaws of the Sherman were primarily pointed out by the U.S. army?

>Any tank which served for decades afterwards in multiple wars cannot be that bad.
That indicates more the willingness to not waste perfectly usable guns rather than the Sherman being good.

> The USSR, with it's T-34-85, JS-2, and other "best" tanks of the war, exclusively used the Sherman tanks in its elite armored formations in 1944-1945

They were a lot more reliable than the German tanks, and once upgrades like wet ammo stowage, welded flat plates instead of cast hull, and the 76mm came along it was pretty good.

The Germans had serious problems because they kept wasting resources on unreliable, small count super tanks instead of building more Panzer IVs.

>Because of their insufficient armor, the insides of Sherman tanks were prone to catching fire during combat. This problem was compounded when fires ignited shells and other munitions inside a tank. Sherman M4’s were jokingly referred to by British soldiers as “Ronsons”,

>hese disparities are shown in an account of the famous Lt. Colonel William B. Lovelady, commander of the 3rd Armored Division’s 2nd Battalion, retold by Lt. Colonel Haynes Dugan.

“One of his Shermans turned the corner of a house and got off three shots at the front of a Panther, all bounced off. The Sherman then backed behind the corner and was disabled by a shot penetrating two sides of the house plus the tank.
Though comparing the armoring of a tank like the Sherman to the guns of a Panther is kinda dubious in my eyes.

> Politely tell them this isn’t about you, it’s about the Academy.

You slowly step up to the podium, then dust down your jacket and grab it. You’ve spoken to crowds before, this is no different. This is only 25,000 students that you might see every day and who will be judging your performance. “Now, this is not about my story. This is about all of our stories. We all come from very different places. Some of us from New Jersey.” Someone whoops in New Jersey pride. “Others from as far west as California, and some from the Midwest too. I just want to say that it’s not just about me, it’s about what we can do for the Academy. Thank you.”

Oh God, your lunch is coming up. You step back from the podium. The Captain gestures you to a seat on the stage. Really? Ugh, you sit down. “Wow, she’s so cool,” says one Officer. “Yeah, she must be really mature!”

You smile. Good, good. You saved yourself.

“Right,” says the Captain. “You all find me in the Command Tower on duty. But since you are all here, I will take questions.” One girl raises her hand. “Yes, you.”

The girl stands up. “I heard the Student Councils are letting a Boy’s Skycraft team train here for the summer, is that true!?”

“What!?” yells another girl. “They’re letting boys come here!?” Everyone starts shouting and yelling in excitement, fright, and most of all panic.

“Now, now,” says the Captain very coolly. “Yes, there are boys coming. It’s a cooperation effort to help LGA branch out to schools on the land. They’re not here yet but we should all welcome them with the open arms of a school that houses mature and well-educated women!” Everyone continues to panic in their seats. Truth be told, you weren’t even aware of this happening. Hopefully it isn’t too much of an issue. The Captain sighs. “Alright, you’re all dismissed. First time Officers, please report to the Command Tower for further orientation.” She looks back at her XO. “Send in the Hall Monitors.”

The XO nods, calling up the Hall Monitors on a radio. The Hall Monitors burst into the lecture hall, quickly hurrying sutdents out of their seats and back out of the lecture hall. “Out, out, ya fecking goons! Come on! Come on!” Irish, typical.

“Right. You are being given your Officer’s Pads.” One of the Senior Officers hands you an iPad on a clipboard. “Yes, they are iPads. They are not for recreational use. They are for accessing the Job database. Every day, there will be jobs available for you to supervise. Shifts can consist of 10 students to over 100 depending on the job. It is your duty to take these jobs quickly and efficiently.” You’ve all met on the bridge in the Command Tower, where Navigations students are already busy directing the ship out of port. The sun was already shining, signaling it was late mid-day. “Since you are first time Officers here aboard LGA, that means your first week here is a vacation. You are to spend it learning and adjusting to your new roles. Understood?” You all nod. “Good,” says the Captain. “Now, listen up. Tomorrow is the Club Fair. You are allowed to participate in extracurricular activities as well. Some of you might want to take Tankery I can guess. But remember that good extracurricular performance can boost your chances at getting promoted.”

Oooh, promotions. “You’re all starting as Rank Four Officers, simple Ensigns. There are four Ranks in total. When you reach Rank One like me, you get this neat white uniform!” She motions down her body, showing off her proud white uniform with black trim on the miniskirt and gold buttons as well. “It’s a lot more trouble to keep clean than you think. Any questions?” … “No? Okay, dismissed! Enjoy your stay aboard the ship.”

Eh, they were pretty prone to having engine failures compared to other german tanks, mostly because they were put into "mass" production too fast.

“Wow, an iPad!” You met Winona outside of the Command Tower, and out into the sweltering summer heat of the upper deck. Winona’s already gotten rid of her jacket, instead wearing only the skirt and the light blue blouse. Interesting solution you guess, but you’re not coming to her rescue if the Hall Monitors come and fine her for it. “Nice! Do you get any good apps on it?”

You pull it away from her, giving her a stern look. “It’s not for recreation. It’s for my Officer duties.”

“Ooooh…” Winona folds her arms. “I see. Well, that’s okay. My parents gave me an iPad anyway for my birthday last year.” Oh, now she’s trying to show off. You roll your eyes. “Come on!” She pats your arm, grinning. “How about we go visit the Tank Hangar? I want to see if we can call dibs on any tanks!”

“I’m not sure that’s a good idea,” you say. “Maybe we should wait for the Club Fair like everyone else, Winona.”

You decided it was fair to at least take a look around and see if there were any good tanks left. You know that LGA certainly doesn’t have time for “prospective” takers like you and Winona. But maybe if you declared your intentions, they’d probably set something aside for you. The Tank Hangar was huge, like a warehouse built for ships rather than tanks. Ever since the 2013 Tournament, LGA has become a powerhouse in the Tankery leagues. And even if Kursk beat them last year, it was during the Semi-finals after a pretty intense match.

The gate inside was open to visitors at least, and there were only a few it seems. Maybe you caught them on a slow day. You step into the tank hangar, and gasp in awe. In separate racks along the walls were all of the tanks. There was the Churchill tank that the Freshmen team drove into battle, the first time to join LGA’s revived program. And there was the M5A1 Stuart driven by the Polish Student Association! And the M26 Pershing formerly driven by Bernadette Fairless! “I’m in heaven,” says Winona. “Look at it all!” Several girls were busy tending to their tanks, too busy to walk you all through it.

You don’t mind, it was like walking through a museum. “Look!” Winona points ahead. “It’s Cupid!” The M4A1E8 Sherman sits on his own special work platform, having received a new wash, its armor gleams in the glow of the sunlight coming in from the roof windows. That cannon, the machine guns, the treads, it was amazing! It was like looking at a piece of history!

“Can I help you two?” You and Winona turn around to see the girl herself.

Gertrude Pool.

Winona squeals. “Eeeee! Oh my God! Gertrude Pool! Hiii…” Gertrude happily shakes hands with Winona, smiling. “Oh, er, this is so- I mean, we were planning on joining, me and her, and I was hoping we could-“

“Get a tank early before everybody else?” asks Gertrude. You both nod. “Sorry, but we have to treat everybody equally here. You can’t reserve any tanks.” You both frown, crestfallen. “But hey, listen, you’re all free to look around. We do have some tanks available. They’re Griselda’s, and she’s…” Gertrude quirks her brow. “Hm.” She smirks. “Can I ask you two a favor?”

“Oh most definitely,” says Winona.

“Griselda is out back with some of the tanks,” says Gertrude. “Would you two mind giving her a look? I think she’d appreciate having some new recruits.” She leans closer to you two. “She’s planning on entering her own team into the NATO Tournament and er…” Gertrude twiddles her fingers. “Don’t tell her I said this, but, could you er…”

Winona gasps. “Oh I see.” You see, last year, the reason LGA lost was because Griselda was commanding the flag tank and got sniped by Oryola’s ISU-152. And even before that, Griselda’s performance in commanding as an Officer on the field was relatively abysmal. “Sure. Er, Ellie?”

Gertrude smiles at her. “Be gentle with her. She’s a bit soft about last year.”

“Don’t worry,” you say. “Me and Winona will not bring up last year with her. We simply want to join the team, and I guess the team she’s making with you.”

Gertrude smiles happily. “Ah, I knew I could count on the kindness of strangers!” She happily pats you on the arm, grinning. “Go get her. And if she asks if I was involved, you haven’t even met me-“

“POOL!” You jump, and turn around to see an M5 Halftrack roll into the hangar. Coming out of the back comes a girl with a pair of curly twintails, a feisty attitude, and a chest that makes you feel a bit small. “We didn’t settle our business last night!” She thumps her fist into the palm of her other hand, grinning madly.

“Clara, how many times do I have to tell you!?” Gertrude yells at her as she advances. “I’m not going to give you and team a private jet to go around flying to Cheerleading competitions!”

“Not unless I beat the everloving fuck out of you!” Clara yells back. “Come at me!” Gertrude and Clara immediately start wrestling each other, slamming each other’s backs into the side of the halftrack and then hurriedly pulling each other to the ground.

You and Winona glance at each other. You should probably go.

-

Around the back of the hangar, you see a group of girls hosing down a few tanks dressed only in shorts and t-shirts. Winona whistles a little, getting their attention. “Excuse me! Which one of you is Griselda Pool?”

One of them raises their hand, and drops down from the tank she’s washing. Of course it’s the one that looks like Gertrude, except with longer hair. “Hey there. A-…” She gasps, grinning. “Are you here to join the NATO team?” You and Winona nod to each other, then nod to Griselda. “Oh, great! Ah, what are your names?”

“My name is Elodie Zumwalt, this is Winona Griffiths,” you say. “So where’s the rest of the team?” you ask.

Griselda motions to the two other girls washing the tank. “Um. That there is Luisa Peña.” A tanned Latina girl waves at you from the engine block, smiling. “And Yuno Kawasaki.” The Japanese girl with a green ribbon tying off a ponytails waves at you too, smiling. “… this is the NATO team.”

“Three people?” you ask.

“Well, five,” says Winona. “That’s enough to crew a Sherman.” Griselda nods, folding her arms, pursing her lips a little. “Were you planning on a recruiting drive during the Club Fair?”

“Yeah, yeah,” says Griselda. “But erm… it’s tough going I guess. I mean, I don’t exactly have- look, you’re here to get settled into a tank, right?” You both nod. “Well, until we get more people, already have three tanks lined up for newcomers! We have a Churchill IV tank,” says Griselda. “And a Centaur I. And a Panzer III Ausf. F with the late 50mm gun.” Those tanks actually look like they’re in competition form. “Feel free to take a look, see which one you like.”

The modifications and developments of the Cromwell were classified under "Type" and "Mark". A single Mark could cover up to four Types and a Type up to six Marks making classification complex.[12]
The Types ran from A (the earliest Cavaliers, Centaurs and Cromwells) to F (a late model Cromwell with driver's side escape hatch).

“You don’t have any Russian tanks available?” asks Winona a bit sadly.

Griselda shrugs. “I did order an IS chassis but it’s still in delivery. And unfortunately, it was most of my funding that I had to spend on it.”

You point to the Centaur I. “Can we take a look at that?” Griselda nods, smiling at you. She leads you towards the newly cleaned Centaur I. You all step aboard and then open one of the hatches. You decide it best to stay outside while Winona heads in. “What are the specs?”

“Well, it’s not as fast as a Cromwell,” says Griselda. “It’s working off of a different engine. The Meteor is really what makes a Cromwell a Cromwell. But…” Griselda pats the top of the turret, happily smiling to you. “I love all tanks, and really, I thin kthe Centaur can be a mean bastard in the right hands.”

Winona pokes her head up, smiling. “What about the Panzer III, is that any good?”

“Oh, of course!” says Griselda. “It was the medium tank before the medium tanks started showing up! The 50mm can take on most light armor and even give mediums a bit of a hard day. Plus, if you feel like it, we can buy a StuG III Conversion kit and turn it into a damn good assault gun.” Winona smiles at you happily. “Of course, it all depends on how well I’m funded… and if we get any new crews. Or tanks.”

[1/2]
>>
>>45665811
[2/2]

“Is Gertrude not funding the team?” asks Winona. Griselda shakes her head, frowning. “Why? Isn’t she your sister?”

Griselda sighs. “It’s not about her being my sister, it’s… look, it’s a really long story and honestly guys, I uh… I hate to do this to you. You want to join, right?” You all nod. “Okay, let me be blunt. First off, NATO Tournament isn’t based on single elimination, not until we get to the postseason, if we even get to the postseason, it’s based on how many matches you can win. There’s 22 in the entire season, and they’re all the weekends. So… you have to give up your weekends if you want to join. And, this weekend we have two matches against Kursk, an elimination and a Flag match and if we don’t recruit enough crews, I might have to ask you guys to switch to using another tank as I see fit or whatever instead of staying in one and er…” She blinks, and finds the two of you staring at her blankly. “… so, yeah. That’s.” Griselda blushes intensely. “I didn’t mean to lecture you. That’s the reality of it. Can I trust you guys to join at least?”

If we're upgrading them to even later models the Cromwell is superior. Not in a "Hahha u suck germans!" sort of way but that some of them are late war upgrades with more speed and about 102mm more of armor in some locations.

>>45665970
The Hull of the Cromwell looks a bit similar to the Panzer IV because it's use of a flat plate instead of a slope used in other tanks.

You smile, placing your hand upon your heart. “You can count on us, Griselda. Winona definitely knows more about tanks than I do, and I certainly have the dedication to make something like this work. With your tanks and my brains, we’ll make an excellent team!”

“Yes!” Griselda immediately hugs you both, splattering your uniform with soapy water. “Thank you! Thank you so much!” She hurries to pull a very enthusiastic Winona into the hug as well. “Oh, you two are great! You have to come back with more crewmembers so we can make this work! No tankery team ever won with a single crew!”

Winona tilts her head. “What about Wittman?”

“He had help,” says Griselda.

The two of you dismount, happily looking upon your options. “Anyway,” says Griselda. “We have more tanks coming, I promise you. There’s a Pershing in the pipe I’m working with Robert A. Heinlein Academy on acquiring. And then you know about the IS chassis. I’m on a very tight budget but I think we can make this work.”

“Alrighty,” you say. “… when did you say our first match was?”

“This weekend,” she says. You and Winona glance at each other, nervously. Only a week to learn how to run a tank and find full crews for at least some of them? Oh boy. “Don’t worry, I’m sure in the grand scheme of things, we can drop a match or two but er…” Griselda smiles nervously. “You two will be fine, I assure you!”

“Right,” you say. Well, now what though?

You decided on grabbing a light dinner off of a food cart with Winona before heading back. You both step into your room, and find it just as you left, somewhat still packed. “Welp!” Winona grins. “Time to unpack my models!” She hurriedly unzips one bag and starts placing models upon the desk. It was mostly tanks, except… well, mix and match they were. One was a Type 89 I-Go with a Maus turret, another was a Pershing with a King Tiger turret, and then there was a Sherman with a 17 Pounder. Wait, that one actually makes sense.

“So, you’re an Unlimited fan, right?” you ask.

“Yeah!” She happily claps her hands, then reaches for her phone and shows you a few pictures. “There’s me with my first Unlimited Tank.” How horrifying, it was a Panther with the turret of a Pershing. “It was real trick trying to merge the turret and the gun with the Panther but when it worked, it really worked!”

“I see,” you say. First it’s turrets on hulls, then it’s ripping apart entire tanks. You guess you can’t fault her for her hobbies. She starts unbuttoning her blouse and picks up a towel. “What are you doing?”

The showerroom was actually more lavish than you thought it to be. It wasn’t cold, sterile, or like anything you see in those prison movies where dropping the soap made you a bitch. No, it was actually quite comfortable. There were spaces to strip off your clothes and pick up a towel, there was an open expanse of shower poles for girls to shower. And there were rooms for girls to bath in tubs or in relax in hot saunas or whirlpool baths. You guess the Naval Studies line gets it really good.

Still, there was one thing you couldn’t ignore, no matter how much you held your arm over your chest. And it wasn’t something Winona could ignore either as she showered next to you. “You’ve got some pretty big knockers.”

“Th… thanks,” you say coolly.

“No, seriously!” She smiles. “I’d kill for some breasts like those, I bet you’re going to get a lot of guys with that, hehe! Or maybe a girl if that’s your fancy? You know what they say about LGA, 25,000 students arrive, 12,500 couples leave!” You roll your eyes. You’re not interested in romance. And even if you were, romance is so… alien. You’re aware it’s not like the movies. But you’re not sure how it’s not like the movies.

And forget ever attracting anybody to you. You shudder at the thought of it. You’re too socially inept for that. At least you think you are. Really, you’ve got the air of cool and mature already. No need to jeopardize it.

Winona sighs. “Well, I must say, I think today was a pretty good day.”

“Yeah,” you say. “It’ll be nice having you as a roommate, Winona.”

“Great, you too!” She happily pats your bum, and you glare at her, red in the cheeks. “Oh, come on, we’re all girls here!” She blinks. “Speaking of girls, you think we can find two or three girls by tomorrow to help us crew some tanks?”

“Of course,” you say. “Why wouldn’t we?”

“Just saying, it sounds difficult,” she says. She smirks, looking at you. “Maybe we’ll have to dress you up in something lewd to get their attention, eh?”

This will naturally lead in to the start of the first chapter, where Elodie is selling her body for advertisement.

“Please, I won’t lower myself to selling my body for advertisement, Winona.” She rolls her eyes, still smirking smugly. “Don’t look at me, like that. I’ll put you on report.”

“Oh, yeah yeah,” she says. “But say if everything else we do doesn’t work-“

“No,” you say. She huffs, pouting. “If you’re willing to make me do it, how about you do it instead?”

“I’m not as sexy as you,” she says.

“Tch.” You look away, a slight blush to your cheeks. Never before have you been called sexy in a situation like this. So embarrassing! “Are you done showering, it’s almost time for lights out.” She nods, switching off her shower.

The two of you get back into the lockerrooms. “Say.” Winona pulls up her black thighs as she sits on the bench. “Did you buy the summer uniform?” You shake your head. “Ah, good girl. You see, it’s an upperclassmen thing. They all wear the summer uniform not just because it’s comfortable, but also to trick freshmen into buying it.”

“Yeah,” you say. “You get it for free before the spring season. I’d hate to be the sorry idiot that bought one before that.” You look past Winona to see the same incredibly tall girl from the bus staring at her locker, summer blouse wrapped her arm. She stands there, stunned.

Oooh, tough break. Winona looks over, and quietly cringes with you. “Come on,” says Winona. She hurries to pull on her blouse, she hasn’t even buttoned it up all the way. “Let’s get out of here.”

Winona steps into the room first, and hurries to jump onto the bunks. “I call the top bunk!”

Top bunks are dangerous, I know from personal experience.
Also, who wants to bet that that tall girl will be part of our crew? We've seen her twice now, can't be coincidence.

Hmmm, but bullying is fun too though...

> “Enjoy falling on your face in the morning.”

“Enjoy falling on your face then,” you say. You slip off your miniskirt and your pantyhose as well along with the rest of your uniform, then pull the school’s sleepwear, a light blue nightgown.

Winona giggles at you as she pulls on a large t-shirt to wear as pajamas. “Aw, you look adorable.” You roll your eyes at her as she jumps up onto the top bunk. “And just you wait, you’ll be the one falling flat on your face in the morning.” She rolls on out of view. She pops back in however. “By the way, club fair’s in the afternoon, I hear there’s going to be a lot of chili there.”

“You like chili?” you ask.

“Pffft.” She rubs her stomach. “I have a stomach made of tungsten, believe me, there is no chili too hot for me.” She smiles happily at you. “Good night, Ellie! Want me to hit the light?” You nod, and she turns off the lights for you.

You settle into your bed as well. It’s so much more comfortable than yours you find. And this pillow as well is sucking you in. And this blanket is so soft and huge. You’re almost suffocating in it! Wow, this is so much better than living at home! Maybe if you make enough money you can bring Mom and Dad over here and find them jobs here too!

Oh, man.

But today too. You made a friend! You smile happily, rolling your pillow over your head and squealing quietly. You’re a Naval Studies student now!

Tomorrow’s going to be great!
