You are Tom Gainer. Yesterday, a van exploded and you gained superpowers. Then you had to leave town as the police and the International Union of Powered Heroes aka the Super Union are hunting you down. Now here you are abandoning your car, a gift from your parents when you graduated from high school, at a very old looking gas station on the outskirts of town, making your way out into the wilderness of the George Brakart State Park. You are somewhat familiar with the area, despite not being originally from Crimson Beach or even New Hampshire. If you put your mind to it, you think, you can probably live off the land for a while and maybe things will cool down enough that you can try to clear your name.

First things first: supplies. Because of its location, this gas station has a wide selection of what could be described as the bare essentials for camping. You have a total $200 dollars to your name. The camping 'aisle' consists of a gas stove, several bags of preserved food (jerky, trail mix, dried fruit), a mess kit, small tanks of propane, the larger tanks of propane that can be refilled at any gas station, knives, and spatulas. You can probably afford a little of some things.

Gas Stove: $25
Mess Kit: $10
Small Propane: $15
Large Propane: $75
Knife: $12
Spatula: $4
Assorted Preserved Snacks: $20 for 1 week of snacks.

You decide to forgo the stove and gas. Too reliant on civilization. Its a good thing you did Boy Scouts when you were young. City life would have left you completely unprepared for living in the woods for any longer than half a day. You are confident in your ability to make fire, hunt and kill your own food. If not, well this month's worth of preserved snacks should be able to keep you going in the mean time. You have $94 left as a very bored looking attendant bids you a half-hearted farewell. The mess kit and spatula fit neatly into your backpack and you look one last time at your car before turning into the woods for at least a month of time.

It takes you about 3 hours to trek into the park far enough that you feel you'll be safe from at least the normal public's eye. Whatever the Capes have to throw at you, you just have to prepare to hold them off and escape again. Camp is set up relatively easily. You had a spare tent in your car from a summer trip with your family so you don't have to worry about building shelter for the moment.

You decide to check if it really was you that made the world go silent except you yesterday. You stand at the center of camp and stay silent for a moment. You hear the sound of birds and the distant noise of water rushing down a river nearby. You concentrate on turning it all off. No noise. No noise. NO NOISE. You sweat and your head starts to hurt but you can still hear the birds. You aren't sure if its just the headache or not, but they sound softer. The sound of the river is gone or at least so quiet now that it is beyond your hearing. You let out a sigh and relax as the sound return to its normal, slightly louder state. On the bright side, now you know for a fact that you can control the sound around you. So hey, there's that!

You decide to take a break from the slightly disappointing exercises of your sound powers and focus on your enhanced agility. After a short walk away from your camp, you find a tall tree with a large number of branches reaching all the way to the top. Without really thinking about it, you run at the trunk of the tree and after three steps up the trunk push off, grabbing a nearby branch and swinging your way up to the next one. You leap from that branch to the next and the next with more and more flourish to your movements. If it wasn't for the superhero manhunt they have going on for you, you could completely dominate the parkour world! Hot damn! You sit up on a branch at the top of the tree and look out over the park. You can see the river you were hearing at the camp not much more than a mile away and, if you squint, you can just barely make out your campfire in the clearing you set up in. Off in the distance you see the sun setting and, in the other direction, lights from the Crimson Beach metropolitan area. Its almost... peaceful here. You'd feel a lot better about this if it wasn't for the ever present concern of powerful Capes trying to track you down.

All that's left to do is to get down from this tree.

Its not nearly as fancy as when you went up, but you're pretty sure that if someone had been watching you, they would have been impressed anyway. A hop, skip and a jump later, you are back at camp. The smouldering campfire crackles and you sit down by it. You could probably work more on your powers, but its starting to get late. Too late to actually go out and try to hunt something. At least that's what you think.

You decide to try again with your sound powers. You know you can turn down the volume, but can you turn it up? Think about loud things. Being next to the amps at metal concerts. Jackhammers. The explosion... oh god the explosion was so loud. You look around as you think. You see birds in the trees as well as some squirrels, and that's when things go wrong.

We really, they go right, but far too fast for you to reign in. It first starts out as a low hum, but grows into a growl, then a screech that overwhelms your senses. It is immensely painful, and seems to drag on for an eternity. Its as if someone put a stadium PA system up to a wind tunnel and turned the gain up to max! As soon as you lose focus, though, it disappears. You take a second to inspect yourself. You make a nonsense syllable.

"BAH"

You can still hear fine. Not even any lasting tinnitus. You put a finger up to your ear. No bleeding. What ever happened, it seems that you can't hurt yourself too badly with your powers. At least you're irony-proof.

Looking around, you can't seem to say that much for the local wildlife. On the ground around the outskirts of camp, you can see convulsing bodies of the smaller creatures that were observing you. They are either dead or in the process of dying. Its... a little disturbing to look at. You aren't sure if you want to try out your powers again today. From a dark part of your mind you tell yourself that at least you could harvest the animals for meat since you have that knife.

You guess that's one way to look at things, but you're no monster. You start with the animals that you are certain are no longer alive. You pick up squirrel corpses and the larger dead birds that you think you could probably get some meat off of. Hopefully those that can recover from what you did will be able to get up and get away from you. It turns out to be quite the bounty of small creatures, but most of them don't look like they could offer much in the way of meat. You see a few creatures stagger to their feet and stumble off into the woods. At least you didn't kill everything around you.

You tap into that part of your brain that stored the parts of your Boy Scouts days that didn't involve poker games or making lanyards and take out your knife. You take a deep breath start skinning and gutting your bounty.

You aren't as rusty at this as you thought you'd be, nor are you as squeamish about it as you thought. You cut around the neck and let the blood drain out of the carcasses before skinning them and gutting them. It takes a good amount of time, but by the time it truly becomes dark, you have a decent pile of fresh squirrel furs and piles of meat and guts. You scoop up the guts and carry them to the river for the bears and other scavengers to eat while you return to stoke your fire and start cooking.

You stomach grumbles as you take in the aroma of cooking meat. Its only now that you realize how long you've gone without a hot meal. You take a handful of trail mix to stem the hunger while you wait for the meat to roast.

You mind wanders while you wait. What do you think about?

Your mind wanders towards your family. This whole mess... how are they dealing with it. Is Mom crying? Is Dad trying to fend of the Capes coming to question them about him? You sister, Kaitlyn, how is she handling school with everyone thinking you caused that explosion. Is it just Capes that would harass them? You loathe to think about the reporters and paparazzi that might surround your family as they are forced to meet with the Union while they question them about you. You almost lose your appetite with the worry.

The meat is almost done and you return to reality to retrieve your cooking.

"Something smells good."

You stiffen at the sound of another person coming from behind you.

"Just the day's hunt. Squirrel and robin." You try to sound nonchalant. You hope this is just some hiker of camper on their way back to their cars and only got here by chance. Your heart beats in your chest so loud you think this person might hear it.

"Really now? You don't hear of people hunting squirrels for food, let alone robins." The voice is male. Definitely male.

You swallow hard, but it doesn't seem audible as you don't hear the man react. You stay silent.

Nah it actually works really well if you're making up a name in real life, not only is it easier to remember than some random name you threw together but that little things like a tired sound to your voice then people are more inclined to believe you. Not like there aren't plenty of people in the world named after famous people, hell I know someone named bilbo baggins and he has a brother named frodo
>>
>>45628641
"I'm Bob." You lie, thinking of a PBS painter. "And I never said I was any good at hunting. You get what you can take."

The man chuckles and walks towards you and your fire. "Well then, Bob. Mind if I ask you some questions? It won't be more than a moment of your time."

This guys just doesn't take a hint. You sigh. Those sounded like police words anyway. This guy is probably looking for you. Its dark, so he might not realize who you are.

"I'm looking for a young man named Thomas Gainer. About six feet tall. Average build. Dyed red hair." Now you're really glad its dark. "The Super Union just want to talk to him about the Crimson Beach Event." Event? You didn't realize you warranted an Event.

"Haven't seen him." You lie again. Its a thin one, but it seems to hold. "What happened at Crimson Beach? Should I be worried about this guy?" The authenticity of your curiosity about the first question carries over for the second.

"Well the Capes aren't sure what's going down. They got in the only report about this Gainer kid's powers and are sure he isn't responsible for the explosion at the college." That's a relief. "But it seems he wasn't the only one to suddenly have powers following the blast. There have been a boat load of new Supers emerging in the last 24 hours alone. Its crazy out there. I heard some of them even turned Monstrous."

You've heard that term before. Monstrous Supers are rare. When Supers emerge with powers with physical traits, most of them can either conceal or control them. Monstrous Supers are stuck. Worse still, you've never heard of a good Monstrous Super. Some people speculate that its part of the Monstrous trait.

"The Union sent me up here to track the poor kid down before he hurts someone while trying to learn his power." So he his with the Union. "You let me know if you run into him. If you do, tell him the Union apologizes for its rash decision making. We only want to help."

And with that, the man starts to move again, his footsteps growing fainter.
