Today was your first day as a student at the University in the shining coastal city of Crimson Beach, NH. You've been here just long to learn your way around Uptown, Downtown and College Town. You know, the places you're actually likely to go to.
>4
Its been a pretty great first day. Picked up your first semester classes' curriculum papers and met the professors running the show as well as a few classmates that showed up. On top of that, your roommate dropped before classes started, so now you have a dorm room all to yourself. How lucky!
>3
Its been sunny and warm, but not as baking as August days tend to be. It feels like maybe Fall might begin a little early this year. Now if only someone would tell the gnats that have been swarming around your face for the last 30 seconds. You swat at them uselessly for a second before giving up and just dealing with it. Hey... what's with that panel van all alone in the center of the parking lot?
>2
You approach it. It looks like its seen better days and seems like the kind of van that would be reported instantly if it were within 200 yards of an elementary school. See as no one else on campus seems to think this thing is sketchy, it must've been here for a while. Though to you it looks like whoever parked it here won't be able to move it again. The door handles on all of the doors have been either broken or removed. Another thing that perceive while examining the sliding door is a digital beeping noise. It kind of reminds you of 24. You know with the timer in between segments that was counting... down. oh.
>1
"SHIT!" You do the most athletic thing you've done in weeks and start sprinting away from the bomb-van. "BOM-" You manage to scream as a crumpling sound and white flash consume your world.
----

Surprisingly you wake up alive. Your whole body is pain, but you are alive. A paramedic is kneeling over you.
"What is your name sir?"

"Tom" You gasp out breathlessly. It hurts to talk, you notice. It hurts to hear. You just hurt. "T-Thomas Gainer."

The paramedic continues working, asking you questions to make sure you're lucid and not dying on him.

You manage to turn your head and see that you on on the edge of a smoking crater where the parking lot used to be. You're almost sure that you hadn't made it this far when the van went off. Did it throw you? You can't concentrate on the questions in your own head. The sirens of emergency vehicles feel like belt grinders on your brain. You squeeze your eyes shut and try to block it out.

Suddenly the world goes quiet. Not the sound of the sirens. Not the sound of the paramedic's questions. Nothing. You open your eyes in confusion and see that the world is completely the same, but nothing is making a sound. You begin to panic as the fear of going deaf grips you. But quickly you begin to notice that the same kind of panic has taken the paramedic as well. He looks like he's trying to say something to you over and over again. He's screaming, you think.

"What the hell is going on?" You are surprised that you can hear yourself. "WHAT IS GOING ON?!"

You freak out. It seems the paramedic can hear you and is trying to calm you down despite his own panic. You close your eyes again.

Its a dream, you think, it has to be. This is nuts!

You think to yourself that this isn't real and that this nuttiness is just some figment of your imagination brought on by the explosion. Can explosions do that to people? Before you can think more on the question, you hear him. Its the paramedic, he's screaming something but its too quiet to make out what. Quickly, it gets louder, like someone sat on the volume button for the world.

"JUST STAY CALM WE HAVE SOMEONE FROM THE- oh!" He stops yelling and recomposes himself. "Er... we have someone from the Supers division coming to investigate the area. Tom, we're going to be taking you to the hospital, but the IUPH are going to want a word with you. The Super Union is going to be very interested in you.

"The IUPH? THE Super Union?" The dumbly repeat back. "What do they want with me?" Of course you answer your own question in your head, but Paramedic, whose jacket says his name is Kowalski, answers you without missing a beat, probably thinking the blast has scrambled your brains more than he thought.

"Whatever just happened to the sound just a second ago has something to do with you. I'm legally obligated to inform the the proper authorities about emergent superpowers and unexplained happenings." He goes into this probably rehearsed speech about having to inform the government and, by extension, the Super Union of things like what just happened to you and the bomb-van.

"What's going to happen to me?" You respond in a mix of curiosity and concern. Yeah, you know of the Super Union and their stupid official name. You know that they have regulated and coordinated superheroes across the world since the Cold War, but no one outside the organization really knows how the Union works.

"They'll send in one of their specialists, probably. Ask you a few questions about this," Kowalski gestures to the smoking crater currently being cordoned off by police. "and about what just happened with the sound just now. After that, I don't know. Anyway, it time to get you into the ambulance."

The footsteps stop above you. Its another paramedic. Kowalski picks up the stretcher at the handles by your feet. Looking down, you realize you don't really look injured. You're clothes are little singed but other than that and the pain, you look unscathed.

>Struggle to free yourself. I'm not gonna get nabbed by some super G-men!

Well the tie lives on. Writing

>gain powers

The lack of information on what the Union does with persons of interest unnerves you. If you turn out to have powers (despite being its own ball of excitement and anxiety) would they take you to some kind of black site and do things to you? Do you get a say in the matter? I mean, yeah, they're super HEROES, but the government is not trustworthy in the slightest. You glance down at your restraints. They look properly secured. You think you could probably escape them if you really strained or maybe when they put you on the comfier gurney, you could make a break for it. In the meantime you could always try to squeeze some more info out of Kowalski. He seems pretty informed on the Union. Maybe he's a fanboy?

"So what kind of 'specialists' do they send for these kinds of things?" You ask, doing your best impression of someone not thinking about running away from the scene of a disaster.

He shrugs back and answers nonchalantly. "Its kind of a case by case kind of thing. The last specialist I remember visited the hospital was wearing spandex and looked like he'd just gone ten rounds with a giant robot. Actually, I think it was Apex, so he might have." That doesn't sound good. Apex was NYC's lead Cape. The dude lead the Union's East Coast branch. From what you understand, he's kind of standoffish.

Kowalski continues, "Of course some of the nurses tell me that was a special case. Most of them look pretty normal. Guys in business suits asking questions. I'm not around for any of that, so this is all hearsay."

A real fount of knowledge aren't you, Kowalski. You think to yourself.

"I'm sure its nothing to worry about. You're a victim in all this, right?" He smiles as they load you up onto the emergency vehicle. If you were to try to make a break for it, now the chance. The cops aren't looking at the ambulance and you're feeling pretty confident in your running speed since you apparently outran a goddamned explosion!

Its like something out of a cartoon. As the paramedics remove their hands to secure you to the gurney, you make your move. Unfortunately, you have over estimated your strength. If you are a Super now, enhanced strength is not one of your powers. You only manage to break out of the bindings holding your lower body. Luckily the effort was more than the gurney was prepared for and it snaps, allowing you to slide to your feet and on the cracked pavement of the formerly nice parking lot. It takes a minute for Kowalski and his partner to fully comprehend the reality of the situation before they start to chase you.

But by then you are clear across the lot. You don't remember being this athletic before.

>You have: Enhanced Agility!

Its a little cumbersome to waddle around with a giant plastic board strapped to you, but you manage to fumble through a cabinet in one of the offices and find a box cutter. Apparently its pretty sharp still, as it slices through one of the straps with very little effort. With your arms given more freedom, you are able to undo the rest of your straps with no problem.

Just in time, too. You hear heavy footsteps running into the building. Radios are going off and you think it must be the police trying to track you down.

There's no time to learn if you can fend off the cops with your sound powers, but you do know you're faster and more agile than before. Maybe you can give them the slip like you gave Kowalski.
You dash out of the office and make for the back of the building. Your feet almost don't make a sound as you rush along the halls. The sound of the police fade as you put distance and walls between you and them. An open window provides you an escape route onto the street and into the crowd. Your clothes are still dirty and slightly burnt and you are probably covered in small scrapes and bruises, but you blend into the crowd for now.

You need to change clothes. They know what you are wearing now and its only a matter of time before they track you down. Lucky for you, you live on campus and your dorm is just a small ways away. You're confident you can put a bugout bag together real fast and be out on the road before CBPD knows what's going on. The only real worry is what will happen when the Capes learn that a potential super escaped from an ambulance and ditched police after an explosion on a busy university campus. The thought doesn't excite you.

You get back and quickly change out of the burnt beach shorts and polo and put on a sturdy pair of jeans, your favorite Decepticon shirt and pack a few changes of clothes and other essentials. You start to think back about today, questioning your moves. This might be your last chance.

Its too late now. You ran. You ran and you don't think the Union is going to think you were still just an innocent victim in all this. Other than you, no one knows that this was all just one giant coincidence. Was it a coincidence? You gain superpowers right after this mysterious white van with a bomb in it explodes on the first day of a new semester at a large university. There's something wrong here. You know it, but you're never going to be able to find out what the hell is going on with the Union on your back. You'll need to ditch them, learn more about what new abilites you have, and track down the son of bitch who ruined your life. (and put you several hundred thousand dollars in debts since you're obviously not going to be finishing that degree now)

You shoulder your backpack and grab your keys. By the time the police arrive at your dorm, you are leaving city limits. You hear your name on the radio attached as a Person of Interest in the bomb of your university. Apex announced that it is believed that the incident was not purposeful but the result of aggressive and spontaneous emergence of powers and that you, Tom Gainer, should be treated as armed and dangerous. Apex also announced that he has dispatched a squad of Capes to track you down and, hopefully, settle this without bloodshed.

Looks like the Union isn't going to just let you slip through the cracks. Shit.
