ITT: people who need to read the Silmarillion. Most of Tolkien's magic was explicitly song-based. As an example, consider the tale of Beren and Luthien: the elf puts fucking MORGOTH to sleep with a lullaby so Beren can cut a Silmaril out of his crown.

Plus there's the whole creation myth where Eru and the Valar basically sing the universe into existence.
