Night has fallen on the city of Arcadia. As citizens walk on the streets from their workplaces to see their families, danger still looms around every corner.

Rogues, brutes, and criminals all want to harm these people. Whether it's a scheme to poison the city, or an armed gunman in the streets, every day Arcadia inches closer to a total disaster should these everyday villains succeed.

There is hope, however. Where there is shadow, there must be light. Heroes have come out in full force, armed with powers, technology, or pure strength to help the helpless and aid those without aid.

You, are one such hero.

---

The figure clad in dark armor you've been pursuing over the rooftops makes another impossible leap, leaping the width of a street onto another building. The sword on his back is easily his size and weight--how he swung that hunk of metal at you earlier is a mystery to you.

Still, questions don't matter as much as getting him apprehended.

You make a flying leap after him, barely catching yourself onto the edge of the roof and climbing upwards.

The swordsman has turned back to look at you, his sword dragged along the ground to his front.

"Well, hello there. You're persistent, I'll give you that. I don't think I caught your name. So rude, all you wanted to do was chase me without so much as introducing yourself."

"Oh," you start, "I fully intend to! I'm..."

"...Vanquish! These fists of mine glow with divine retribution waiting to strike down the agents of evil!"

Your adversary before you scoffs.

"I am Knightmare."

You blink twice behind your mask. You thought he'd be a bit more...theatrical.

It's no fun when you can't have a back-and-forth dialogue.

"Regardless," he says, trading the sword's position into his other hand, "it's about time this city lost another wretched 'hero'."

Knightmare's body glows with a aura of pure heat, his outline starting to burn with red energy. Even in your thickly-insulated suit, you begin to feel the temperature rise purely from his power.

The visor on his helmet fuses itself shut, and two bloody red markings appear on the side of it's head as it grows canine in appearance. He slumps forward, his fists hitting the ground and making craters in the roof.

A bestial roar escapes his body as he gets back up, taking the sword.

"Well...at least he tries harder than others."

>Play footsies for now--he seems dangerous.

>Attack head on!

Despite your brashness, impulsiveness, and a third word for 'I make bad decisions easily', even you know when someone isn't easily approachable from the get go.

A 7 foot tall guy who just transformed fits that bill like a skintight glove.

As he runs at you, swinging his massive sword at you, you lean back, cartwheeling away and kicking off the ground to kickflip onto your feet. But there isn't any time to rest, as he puts his entire upper body into throwing another swing at you.

This time, you drop down to the ground, letting it go overhead, and then make a quick sweep with your legs like you're in a breakdancing competition to the death, and it's the speed round.

As his balance slightly stumbles, there's still no emotion you can register from him. This guy was stalking the HQ of the Peacekeeper's Union, the local league of superheroes (which you SOMEHOW still haven't been invited to join.)

They mostly deal in fighting for the rights of vigilantes in the city, but they've come under fire recently for their lax behavior towards some of the rowdier heroes. Still, they do more harm than good. Why Knightmare here was near the building is a mystery you can't solve right now.

You get up, launching a fist straight into his stomach. As the forceful blow connects, gauntlet hitting the steel of his armor, you suck in air and push it out quickly, striking with your opposite hand, and then going again. And again.

As your fists fly into his body, he hardly flinches, his swordless hand reaching and grabbing you by the neck, lifting you into the air as you kick fruitlessly at the air.

"You don't know what you're getting into. I'll consider letting you leave this building with at least three limbs if you back down...Vanquish, was it?" He snarls through his mask at you.

>"I'd only need three to beat someone like you!"

>Say nothing and spider-monkey him when he's least expecting it.

>Write-in.

Can we kick one of those red things on his face? I vote we do that. Or an eye, if we can manage it. The red things are probably just for show.

I know shit-talking is a big part of this type thing, but I've never been a fan of it. Just seems silly. Maybe I'll come around.
>>
>>45544107
Shit-talking is pretty pointless against some enemies, not gonna lie. Rival characters are far better to shittalk.
>>
>>45544107

that's

that's not a good typo to make
>>
>>45544219
We can't have a catchphrase yet. Let's see our powers and what our enemies are like, and get a feel for our character.

A catchphrase should be cheesy but feel appropriate when you're taking down mooks, feel slightly tired mid series, get retired, then make you sit up in your seat and yell 'fuck yeah' when the MC shouts it before taking down the final boss. Really it needs to encapsulate the whole story.

They're not easy to come by.

>Write in

"I'm Vanquish, and no material can defy my Suprem Atomic Kick !"

Rolling for it
>>
>>45544304
I feel the catchphrase should be something which is introduced early on; which the hero lives by; which is tried and tested, and ultimately fades over the course of the series as the hero starts to question his values and righteousness; and which is finally uttered again at the end of the final scene of the penultimate episode just before the OP plays in place of the ending theme, when the hero remembers once more what he has been fighting for all this time.

Which would make our catchphrase: "These fists of mine glow with divine retribution waiting to strike down the agents of evil!"

"Ha! I never know what I'm getting into! Unless you're going to be the first one to explain it to me?"

"...I think I'll content myself with spattering you on the sidewalk in just a moment, instead."

He grips your neck tighter, and the strength is starting to make the metal of your suit bend, cutting off your circulation just a bit. This is getting bad.

You grab his wrist with both hands, pulling with all your strength to get yourself free. The sheer lack of prediction he had for that loosens his grip, as you swing under his arm and leap off, landing a few feet away.

"Sorry, Knightmare, I only let the ladies have such a close grip on my jugular! And I doubt you're a fair maiden underneath all that."

You hold a hand behind your back, as it begins to fill with...

For every family that can't afford to lose someone to violence.

Because people who don't have the power to protect themselves don't deserve to be hurt.

Burning radiance infuses itself into your gauntlet, and it's like a miniature red sun is glowing behind you as you power up. Flecks of gold touch the aura surrounding it.

"Come at me, Knightmare!" You challenge him.

"Very well, Vanquish! Show me the power that you house within you! Show me why you think you're worthy of the title of 'hero'!" he says, thumping his fist over his chest before charging at you, his massive greatsword winding up to swing.

"THIS HAND OF MINE GLOWS WITH AN AWESOME POWER! IT'S BURNING GRIP IS TELLING ME TO DEFEAT YOU!"

"My hand holds the will of righteousness! And you're about to feel it's fist!"

"COLD FUSION STRIKE!"

You throw out your fist, as gleaming light engulfs the area in searing red.

As the light begins to fade, and the ringing in your ears starts to fade, you both stand still and pant from the sheer exertion of energy.

The rooftop has cratered slightly once more beneath you. A glance at his sword shows that you've made a fist shaped imprint into the body, and his sword's made a ghastly cut into your knuckles.

You glance up, and he mirrors you.

"Hah...you're...pretty good." You say, swallowing and panting further.

"Most impressive, Vanquish. You may just be worthy of your occupation." He says.

The canine features of his helmet fades as his armor lightens, further and further, until it's more alabaster. The helmet itself disappears into thin wisps of smoke, as the face of a young man is revealed behind it.

"You're too good for them." he says.

"Good for who?" you ask, standing straight up and looking at him.

"You'll know in time." He points his greatsword your way once more. "Don't lose yourself to them, Vanquish, and we will not have to be enemies."

With that, he steps backwards into a portal of shadows and disappears into the ether.

You fill out the info and send it right on in. A sigh escapes your lips, as you hope your twelfth application will finally be the lucky one.

You walk down the fire escape of the building down to the streets and hail a cab, telling them to head for your apartment complex.

It's a long awkward drive as you contemplate what Knightmare talked about. Being a 'good' hero. Were there really bad heroes in your city? Ones that didn't have the people's best interest in mind?

Inconceivable to you...and yet it sounded true.

Your thoughts are interrupted by something in the alley way.

A muzzle flash, and a whirling blur of grey and green. Something was going on.

"Hey, stop here. Something's..." You cut yourself off, throwing a wad of fives and ones at the cabbie, and run into the alleyway.

You see another hero, you presume. He was your green and grey blur, as the limey glow of his visor illuminates his opponent, a mugger with a beanie and a handgun.

"Come on, you rogue! See if your coward's weapon can stop the howling winds of Hurricane Vanguard, Justice's Hero!"

"I'm afraid you're going to be seeing double, villain! Vanquish is here to vanquish all foes!"

Hurricane turns to you, giving a quick salute--seems like a trademark. However, the mugger takes the time to aim and fire into his elbow.

"Argh! M-My law-dealing arm!" He says. You notice his voice is slightly synthesized through his helmet.

...you wish you had something cool like that.

Back to business, you rush past Hurricane to disarm the mugger, throwing a crimson fist and melting the gun in his hands as the blow draws near. He cries out as it begins to sear his hand.

You make the pain stop by quickly knocking him out.

"Ah...t-thank you, fellow hero of the streets. I, Hurricane Vanguard, thank you. M-My turbulent wind generator seems to have malfunctioned this night...hand me downs, you know?"

You nod. Tech malfunctions are the worst. Still, there's some curiosity already brewing.

"Vanquish," you introduce yourself more civilly. "I'm also working for justice! So..."

"Tech knowledge. Nice to hear. If you need anything, call, alright?"

You give him a discreet phone number and ask for his in return.

"Oh! Ah...I-I have my civilian given name tied to mine...please keep it at the utmost top secret! Or else the heroes' code of secrecy is broken!"

You get a ping on your phone as he transfers his info.

>'Makoto' is now one of your friends.

You wave him off and start walking to your apartment complex, moving into the allies behind and stuffing your suit into the duffel bag you keep behind the dumpster. It's not an elegant way to hide your identity, but the landlord has a 'no hero housing' policy. You can't have anything tracing back to your identity in the apartment, hence, the dumpster.

You really wish you didn't smell so bad while stopping villains, though.

You also wish this place wasn't the cheapest housing in town.

Still, you get back into your room and kick back.

You reach over to the fridge at the bedside and grab a can of Coke, resting it on the top of the fridge and turning towards the TV. Seems like nothing but re-runs tonight.

Your phone pings--a notification. Hopefully not a stupid conversation your group chat is having on BuddyNet...

>'Hello, 'Vanquish!' Please, come to our Peacekeeper's Union building nearest you for an interview at 2:00 PM tomorrow. If this time is inconvenient for you, please inform us of a time within the week we can reschedule."

"Holy shit." You mutter.

You take a deep breath.

Sip your Coke.

You lie face down in your Sayaka-patterned pillow.

You roll over and stare at the ceiling.

And you shoot straight up and start jittering excitedly.

"I-I'm going to be a hero! A bona fide hero! I'll fight for justice and be recognized!"

You rush to the window and look at over the city. Streetlights illuminate the traces of streets, and you can imagine the look on citizens' faces as you run from rooftop to rooftop, the very paragon of--

Wait. They said interview!

That means you might still not get accepted!

Your suit still smells like shit! You have to get it cleaned--and before 2 tomorrow! No, not even 2, you have to have it clean and BE THERE by 2!

Why is being a hero so fucking hard!?

>Okay Yukari, we have to calm the fuck down.

Shit taste. Sayaka let her petty jealousy get in the way of JUSTICE, so she isn't even a good role model for a hero.

Be that as it may, surely Yukari has to realize Sayaka's failings as a hero, and doesn't seek to emulate her in all but the vaguest of senses?

And also she still has shit taste.

You hope no neighbors see you run down the stairs in a half-put on set of pajamas down to the dumpster.

At least they're kinda soft.

Grabbing your duffel bag and heading to the local laundromat, making sure no one is inside, you stuff your load (heh) into one of the machines, jam the quarters, and set your phone to notify you when they're done and exit the laundromat. After all, you can't risk anyone connecting your identity and the clothes.

As you wait in the bitter cold outside, you glance onto the streets. A hooker there, someone just walking by here...cars honking at each other.

Another normal night in Arcadia.

Should you do something while you're waiting for your clothes?

>Sure (Hit up the hooker, you dirty fuck)

You sit on the corner of the street in your PJ's looking throughly unheroic and more like a dorky Asian girl who just got locked out of her room.

Wonderful night.

But it was with a purpose! You were going to look your best to interview for becoming a hero! And you were going to be a hero, dammit!

Finally, your phone rings just as your fingers start to lose feeling and you thank God as you head back into the warm laundromat.

...Just to catch a someone you're familiar with there picking up her laundry.

Rebecca from the coffee shop, shit.

Even if it was platonic between the two of you, you still were nervous to make a good impression every time you saw her behind the counter. She had a really good laugh, and you just...shit, you just wanted to be pals! Sit down and have coffee and talk about TV! Shoot the shit, yknow?

Regardless, you're there with messy hair in your PJ's and she's glancing at her phone.

You should say hi, dumbass.

"Hi!" says the dumbass that is you.

She looks up and looks you over. "Oh! Um...Yukari, right? You always get the double shot of cream?" Rebecca's side-eying her machine all the while.

"Yeah! I uh, was wondering if you'd actually like to sit down for like, a friend-coffee date maybe sometime in the next few weeks? Ish?"

She checks her machine again and looks back at you.

"Um...sure! Just...don't make it weird. Friends-only." There's a twinge of awkwardness to that that makes you think she might view you a little creepy at that.

Yeesh.

"So what're you here for for clothes? Washing the whites?"

Aw shit, you think.

"...I-I volunteer to wash people's clothes for them."

"...are they really lazy?"

You step over awkwardly to your machine as it starts to beep that it's done.

"T-They can't afford it so I pay for it and deliver it to them."

She gives a raised eyebrow look at you, but decides it's just weird enough to exist.

"It's nice you want to help the community in some way, at least." Rebecca says, turning her back to her machine. You stuff your clothes into the duffel bag and zip it tight.

"I help it in more ways you wouldn't believe." You say, letting SOME of the truth slip for once.

"Well, I have a day off next Wednesday...wanna head to my work for then? I'll pay for myself, if you don't mind." Rebecca says, bending over to get her laundry.

"Sounds great!" You say as you start to exit.

the vote was tied, so I just went with the most in-character choice. We established the relationship as platonic, so...yeah.

"See you then!"

"See you, Yukari."

Hauling the heavy ass bag up the stairs is a monumental task. You really, REALLY hate that your apartment has no elevator right about now, but you eventually make it back to your room and settle it down, getting back in bed.

You take your laptop and clap twice, turning your lights off. It's about time to wind down for the night--what will you fall asleep doing?

Right! Hero Fiction is a fan-based site where people can write about totally fictional heroes, account their stories of real heroes throughout the world, or make up stories! It's a great idea!

...granted, there's some weird stuff in there.

Still! You search up the 'Vanquish' tag and check for any new results...or any results.

One!

One whole result! You're basically famous!

You check out the story, and glance it over.

There's some sort of OC hero, you've never heard of them before. They're...unsuitably good at their job, evidently, have all the cool speeches, and...you're just arm candy!? What the hell?

You didn't even get to say your cool line about divine retribution! Who the hell writes this schlock?

You glance at the user who posted it, but it's apparently a private account.

What a load of bullshit. Whoever this guy (or girl, they never refer to themselves with a gender) is, they have some fucking balls to make you not even cool.

Well, bad stories are stories, at least.

You sigh and lie back in bed, drifting off to sleep and dreaming of your interview in the morning, and how you're going to nail it.

DAY 1: END

(That about wraps up the first day. Dunno if I'll do day 2 in this thread or just make a thread 2. Probably the latter, at around 8 PM EST tomorrow. I also have a twitter at @RevengeanceQ you can follow and tweet at for updates of any sort.)

We should have a scarf. A red one. Yes.

Good shit, QM. 7/10, will bully you on twitter.
>>
>>45549025
Heroic scarfs are good shit. Hurricane has one because he's my character in a tabletop and I love the bastard so much that I dorked him down enough to be a sidekick type here.

But yeah, scarfs all around for Henshins because it's awesome.
>>
>>45548961

I know the feeling. Once made a Shin Kamen Rider-type hero, without the ability to become human.
She later lost an arm that got replaced with a cybernetic with an electrical punch.
She never, ever beat her archnemisis, hilariously so.
>>
>>45549299
Ironically, I replaced the That Guy of the group and have proven to be the best roleplayer, not to brag. It's just that no one else really talks.

Thankfully, though, I think I broke the ice enough that people are willing to start roleplaying as well. Happy situation all around.
>>
>>45549460
that's always tough to do. People are always worried about looking dumb, like they aren't rolling dice to determine how successful their imaginary character's inconsequential actions are.
>>
>>45549493
It's certainly understandable. This, for all the other players, is the first game that's gone on long enough to level up.

That said, I'm also playing a more bombastic HV, and so I have a robust character for them to talk to. I'm just glad the group's improving.
>>
>>45549621
people will move at their own pace. Can't force good role-playing, it has to develop naturally.
>>
I love it. I've been waiting for a masked hero quest for a while that went somewhere.

Thanks for the thread, and best of luck!
>>
>>45549755
Hey, it's good to hear from fans. I feel like I'm getting a good enthusiastic response, and the people actually seem to be discussing options a little more than just voting, which I love to see.

I'm gonna try and introduce more characters in Day 2 so that you've all got more of a feel for how things are going, and you can decide how Vanquish interacts with them, all that good shit.
>>
And the thread's archived.

Good job, folks.
