Having learned that his sisters are in the village of Sun Do, Cao finds himself a cart leaving the city and sits on the back of it. With his new disguise, wearing Ashrah’s hat and the white robe he stole from the countess’ closet, he easily passes as just a wandering monk or priest. The guards don’t give him a second look as he leaves the city.

The village of Sun Do is to the south, along the coast. If memory serves, it is a fishing village, so Cao is not sure why Sanra and Hua ended up there. But it has been a few days since he has seen his sisters and he misses them terribly, so he picks up the pace and heads south.

After not too long, he stares upon the finish village. It has prospered well in recent years, sending out men in long boats to fish and selling it in the markets of Z’unkahrah. Cao looks around but doesn’t see any immediate signs of his siblings, which makes sense since they are likely trying to hide. He idly wonders how Nitara learned they are here, and who else might know…

Cao walks into the village and heads towards its center, where he discovers a small gathering taking place. Upon a small wooden stage is a woman, rather scantily clad he can't help but notice, speaking to the crowd. She is announcing that trade within Z'unkahrah is temporarily going to be more expensive, due to the recent implementation of new laws regarding merchants and their goods coming into the city. She reads from a scroll, apparently send by Kotal's palace, explaining to them that greater scrutiny is being placed on who comes into and out of the city, starting in the next few days.

Cao considers himself lucky he left when he did, apparently...

There is some uproar from the crowd but the woman, apparently their leader, attempts to calm them by saying that she will appear in Kotal Kahn's court and personally appeal to him about this matter due to the long history Sun Do has had with Z'unkahrah. She expects Merchant-Baron Shukojin will support her in this, as this will limit the trade in the city itself.

Cao looks around the crowd; villagers, farmers, fishermen, but no Sanra or Hua.

Ignoring the stange half-naked mayor, he walks down to the docks of the village and begins scanning his eyes around. Fishermen from all sizes are working here; some sit on docks, others are repairing or preparing boats and a few can be seen cleaning fish. Cao walks by a large shark hanging from its tail with its mouth wide open and he quickly looks away from it, hurrying past. He doesn't like to think about things that lurk beneath the water, waiting to eat him whole...

He scans his eyes across the workers, but then he spies something familiar. Hua! She approaches the back of a worker and deftly lifts a fish from his table when he isn't looking before moving back into the shadows from underneath a nearby dock.

Cao goes to approach the place he saw her slink away from but she's already crawled off. Well, he can probably find her if he goes in after her.

Deciding that, not unlike the fishermen of this village, he can catch a fish with some bait. He sits down and tilts his hat downwards, placing the bag of koins near him. He doesn't put to so far away as to look too obvious, nor does he go to any great lengths to exaggerate his movements or mannerisms. He appears to nod off and nap, while keeping an eye out for his sister.

It takes a few minutes, likely while she watches him to make sure he isn't being watched or watching his money, before she darts out and tries to grab it!

Cao catches her hand and she starts to pull away before he pulls down the cloth covering his face. "Hua, it's me!"

Her eyes turn from fearful to bright in a moment and she throws her arms around him. "Cao! You're alive! You're alive!" she cries, small tears forming at the tops of her cheeks and running down them.

"Shhh!" he says. "I'm alright, yes!" He pulls away to look at her. "Where is Sanra? Is she alright?"

"She's been hurting," Hua says, which makes him very concerned. "Sick, I think. Tired a lot of the time."

Cao tells her to take him to Sanra, and Hua wastes no time in doing so. She brings him to a small, abandonned shack along the water's edge, opening the door to reveal a pale and tired Sanra on the bed.

Cao walks up to her and kneels alongside her. "Sis?"

"Cao..." she says, opening her eyes and smiling. "You're alive... I missed you..."

He feels her forehead. It's very cold. "What's wrong, Sanra?"

"I don't know..." she says. "Feel so... cold..."

He finds her wrist and feels for a heartbeat. It's there, but very faint and weak. Hua sits nearby, looking on with a worried look on her face. "I've been getting her food n' water," she tells Cao. "But she's not getten any better."

Cao asks her what she thinks the problem is. Sanra groans a bit. "Everything tastes like... sand..."

He leans in close. "What?"

"Water and food... It's all bad..." she says. "I feel sleepy and tired all day..."

"She's better at night," Hua says.

Cao feels a lump in his throat as he turns Sanra's head a bit. He spies the two holes in her neck that Mira used to feed on her, discovering them to be black, with the skin around them especially pale.

"No..." he whispers, feeling a great despair rising up within him. "No, damnit..."

"What is it?" Hua asks. Cao turns to consider her before giving her his koins and telling her to go buy some food and water.

He looks back at Sanra after Hua is gone.

"Cao... I'm scared..." she says, breathing heavily. "Am I going to die?"

"No," he shakes his head as he squeezes her hand. "No, I swear I won't let that happen."

"What's happening?" she asks.

"I think you're turning into a vampire," he tells her. "I think... Mira made you into one."

She closes her eyes and softly lets out a sad gasp. "I knew it," she whispers.

"I won't let this happen. I won't let you become a monster," he tells her. "I'm going to find a way to fix you, alright?"

She doesn't reply. It appears she's gone to sleep.

Cao lets go and wonders what he'll do next.

Cao doesn't know much about vampirism, especially how to cure it. He also cannot read. This makes things a problem, but he decides that he will journey to the library in Z'unkahrah regardless and learn what he may. Hua will have to stay and look after Sanra while he is away.

Nitara could help him... but then he would be indebted to her again. He doesn't want to get any more mixed up with that vampiress---in fact, Cao would go so far as to say that he's had enough of vampires messing with his family for the rest of his life.

She said she is crossing the sea... Perhaps she is chartering a boat from the Kove. That might be a good place to start looking for her. Otherwise, he could head straight for the city and get back in before dark.

Hua comes back with some more food and water. She gives some to Cao and tries to feed Sanra, but the girl doesn't eat. Hua is saddened by this. "I'm really worried, brother," she tells him. "She's never been like this..."

"I know. I'm going to try and find a way to fix it." He takes some of the food and water for the road and leaves the koins with her, taking only a few for himself and leaving her the rest. "I'm sorry this all happened because of me, Hua."

"No, it wasn't your fault," she insists. "It was that Draken! That's why Sanra and I came here: we heard he was here!"

Cao listens closely. "Draken is here?" If that's true, some revenge might be in order...

Cao stays with Hua and Sanra for the rest of the day. His elder sister's condition does not show any signs of improvment and what food and water she does drink doesn't seem to help whatsoever. Hua keeps him company and he shows her the map he found, which she begins to translate and help him understand portions of it. It seems this is what Mira was using to keep track of significant things to her. The Living Forest is marked with 'Nitara' and the Wastelands to the south are marked with 'Tarkatans and Raiders'. Interestingly, the jungles to the south of the expansive wastelands are marked with 'Amazons and Blood Flowers.'

The other side is a larger overview of part of Outworld, and across the sea, Mira has marked a specific region out as 'The Volcano Lands' with one particular mountain marked as 'Lava Shrine'.

Cao stays by Sanra's side and keeps her company, but eventually she falls into a deep sleep. He promises he'll return to help her, and so in the morning, he sets out to look for Nitara, heading north to the Kove. He leaves Hua with a kiss on the forehead and most of his koins.

Once he is within sight of the Kove, he considers his next move.

Cao looks up and down the docks, but finds no sign of Nitara.

Cao looks up at the sun. It's during the day, so Nitara may be asleep... He remembers the stone coffin she laid in her lair. Perhaps she is using similar transit for this journey...

Afer asking around the docks, Cao discovers that only one of these ships is leaving to travel across the sea. After some more questions about any unnusual cargo, one surly dockhand mentions a woman paid a lot of money to have a coffin brought onboard.

Cao smiles beneath his disguise. He knows where to find her now. The only difficult part will be getting onto the ship with everyone else unawares...

Spying a nearby rope, Cao sheds his disguise and scales it by slashing at its twin with his sword. He is carried up to the deck by a counter-weight before he hides among the crates. When he sees his chance, he dashes across the way and into the lower cargo hold.

There is no one else here. He looks around before finding a door. Upon opening it, he sees a single bare room, save for one coffin, standing up and propped at an angle against the wooden wall.

Cao takes out his sword again.

Cao clears his throat before knocking a few times on the coffin. After a moment, it opens and Nitara stretches her arms in a yawn. "What is it?" she says before opening her eyes. Her smile almost seems genuine with how her expression lights up. "My little thief!"

He brings up the sword. "My name is Cao!" he says firmly. "Now my sister is turning into a vampire and you're going to tell me how to fix it!"

Nitara folds her arms and leans against one side of her coffin. "Goodness, how rude. And here I thought you were looking for a goodbye kiss..."

"Enough of that," he says, though she still doesn't seem threatened in the least. "I need to know what I need to do to cure her!"

"What will you give me?" Nitara asks, her voice laden with inuendo. She saunters out of her coffin and up to the tip of his sword. "What would you be willing to trade for the life of your sister, Cao?"

"Did you do this?" he asks.

"No, Mira did... honestly. But I already knew that."

"You didn't tell me?!"

She shrugs. "I had a thought we'd be meeting again," is all she says.

He brings the point of the sword up to her neck, but she only smiles. "Do you know how to use that thing?"

"I can try," he replies.

"And lose your sister?" she coos in a teasing voice.

She smiles and uses a finger to push the sword away. "Simple... I want you." Cao blushes a bit and she giggles. "You may not desire to become a vampire, but I still desire a companion for my journey."

"And I won't be changing my mind on it, either. I'm not going to be a vampire," he repeats.

She sighs. "And I give you my word that I'll respect your wishes, provided you respect mine and help me restore my realm to its rightful place in exchange for me helping you save your sister."

"And I don't want to do anything that will get me into an amazing amount of trouble," Cao says.

"No promises, but trouble varries," she says. "Besides, if you accept my help, then you'll be with me the entire time while we are across the sea. When we finish my quest and I hold the Sphere of Vaeternus in hand, I will send you home to your loving, healthy sisters."

She holds out her hand. "Do we have an accord, Cao?" Her smile is wide and her eyes are as alluring as ever.

"That! Stop that! Stop trying to tempt me!" he says. "I don't... I don't want to be a vampire."

"You don't have to be," she says, "but that doesn't mean we can't have a little fun." She reaches out and runs a hand through his hair. "And we could have such fun together..."

"S-stop," he says, trying to sound strong.

She smiles a bit more. "Tell me, Cao... Have you ever 'been' with someone?"

He's about to respond, but then refuses, averting his eyes with his face red. She puts a hand to her lips. "Oh, oh my... I thought as much... You're like an unplucked apple hanging from a tree, so juicy and... tempting..."

Cao suddenly backs away. "E-Enough! Do you agree to my terms or not?"

She tilts her head and cocks her hips as she places her hands on them. "As I said... I won't force anything upon you. Unless you want me to," she says with a wink.

"I can mix up the cure. It has several requirements, six of them mundane and available... but one of them very rare and unique. I happen to be out of them since I haven't needed them in a very long time, so you'll have to fetch them."

"Another quest of fetching things," he sighs. "Alright. What is it?"

"A flower. A Blood Flower, as it is known. A special breed that grows only in the---"

"The Amazon Jungles!" Cao says, surprising her.

"Correct..." she says. "I can teleport you to the Wastelands just north of the jungle, but you'll have to cross them, enter the jungle, and collect the flowers. They grow alongside the rivers and are bright red."

"Alright... I'll need supplies," Cao says. "And I have other things I need to do before I leave."

"The sooner you leave, the sooner your sister is cured," Nitara says. "If you delay, she will die."

"I know!" Cao says. "Just... Just let me think for a moment."

"I'll head there as soon as I have supplies," Cao says. "But when I get back and have her cured, there's something I need to do in the city before we depart across the sea."

She sighs. "Well, I am patient, I suppose. Now, about your supplies... We'll take them from this ship."

"What about the crew?" Cao asks.

"What about them? I'm no longer leaving. They mean nothing to me anymore---and I'm hungry, so I'll make a snack of one or two of them before I leave to watch after your sisters."

"Just so long as you don't touch either of them," he says.

"Why would I?"

She leaves the room and starts searching through the contents of the cargo hold. After a few minutes, she presents Cao with a backpack full of food with some canteens of water. "There you go," she says. "All packed up. Now you be a good boy while you head off to school, alright?"

"Ha ha," Cao deadpans as he slips the backpack around his shoulders.

"I also included some rice wine from one of the crates," she says. "A little extra gift from me to you."

"You're too kind," he replies.

Cao sneaks off the boat and returns with Ashrah's hat. "What is that?" Nitara asks.

"Nothing, just something to keep the sun out of my eyes," he lies to her.

She shrugs, not caring much either way. "Very well then... I'll uphold my end of the deal. Travel south, with the rising sun on your right and the setting sun on your left."

"And after I get the flowers?"

"Well, you'll have to make your way back," she says. "I'd come with you, but since my travel plans have changed, I've got one or two things to wrap up on my end... And, of course, I'll watch over your sisters in Sun Do."

"Alright," Cao says, slipping on the hat. "Let's do this."

Nitara puts her hands to her amulet and it begins to crackle with red energy. Her amulet glows and it creates a portal that that swirls in the room. "Jump in!" Nitara says.

Cao, having not too many pleasant memories of the first portal he went through, hesitates. "Wait, I'm suddenly not so sure abou---"

She grabs Cao and pushes him in, closing the portal behind him. “Watch out for the tarkatans!” she shouts as she does.

Cao falls through a great, spiraling tunnel, ending up on the other side face-first in dusty sand. He slowly picks himself up and looks around.

He’s in the Wastelands of Outworld. To the north is the Living Forest. He picks himself up and sighs. ‘Things used to be so easy…’ he thinks to himself as he starts walking. ‘Used to just steal from people in the streets and now I’m stealing necklaces from shokan princesses and flowers from amazon jungles…’

He kicks a stone as he walks, leaving a trail behind him in the sand. ‘I can’t stand this. In debt to vampires, clans of thieves, my sister is sick, Kotal Kahn probably wants me dead more than ever.’

He sighs and pauses briefly at the top of a dune, adjusting the white hat atop his head. ‘I don’t know how much more of this I can take. If one more thing comes up and hits me out of nowhere I’ll---‘

Suddenly, a red convertible Ferrari, blasting across the desert at high speed and leaving a trail of sand and dust behind it, slams on the brakes as its driver sees him and tries to avoid hitting him. Cao’s eyes go wide as the side of the car slams into him as it turns and skids across the sands, sending him flying and rolling down the dunes.

The car stops nearby. “Shit, shit, shit! I hit that guy! I fucking hit that guy!” he hears a voice say as his vision swims.

“What do we do? Those guys are still after us!”

“I don’t know, I don’t know! Just, uh---we should check on him!”

Cao’s eyes close as two girls get out of the car and run up to him. “His head is bleeding,” one says.

“Fuck,” the other says. “Get him in the back!”

“What? We’re taking him with us?”

“Well we can’t just leave him here and I don’t think they have insurance in this realm!”

Cao feels them grab him, one by the shoulders and the other by the legs, as they hoist him over to the car and put him in the backseat. He groans in pain but is otherwise unresponsive.

“Fuck, alright, we got him, now let’s go!”

“I’m driving, I’m driving!”

The car speeds off.

After a moment, Cao opens his eyes. He's in some kind of seat which, while comfortable, is traveling at very high speeds. He looks and sees two young women sitting in similar seats in front of him; one with light skin and blonde hair and the other with dark skin and braided hair. The blonde one has her hands on a wheel.

Cao shouts as he looks at them and tries to get up, but finds himself strapped to the seat by some kind of insidious material that will not rip or tear! One of them looks back. "Uh oh, he's awake!"

"I can hear that!" the driver says. "Calm him down!"

The other girl looks back and holds up her hands. "Please stop! It's okay, we're not going to hurt you! ...Anymore, I mean!"

"Where am I? Who are you? What's going on?!" He continues to pull against the strap as the high-speed wind blasts him in the face.

"That depends; where are WE?!" the driver shouts. "What realm is this?"

"Outworld!" Cao shouts back.

Both girls look at each other. "Shit!" they say in unison.

The second one looks back again. "Okay, I'm Jacqui and this is Cassie!"

"I'm sorry I hit you with my car!" Cassie says, looking in some kind of mirror. "I don't know if you guys have courts but please don't sue me!"

"I don't even know what you're talking about!" Cao says. "What is going on?!"

"We're not from here," Jacqui tries to calmly explain over the rushing wind. "We're from Earth. Earthrealm, I mean." She pauses. "Are you okay? Your forehead is still bleeding!"

"Just stop!" Cao says. "And let me out!"

"Uh, bad idea!" Cassie says. "We're being chased!"

"Chased?" Cao says. "By what?"

Jacqui points. "Look for yourself!"

Cao stops struggling and turns around in his seat. His eyes go wide as he takes in the sight.

More vehicles, much like this one, only larger, rougher, with many, many more people. Cao looks on as they drive across the wasteland in a massive convoy. Trucks, cars, jeeps and vehicles of all shapes and sizes blaze across the sands in hot pursuit of them, shooting fire and smoke into the air as they go, hollaring and screaming for blood.

"What the hell are those?!" Cao says.

"Cars and a shitload of crazy fucking psychopaths!" Cassie shouts back, suddenly turning to avoid a rock. Cao is shaken down into his seat.

"Cass, I think they're gaining!"

"This thing wasn't meant to run on open sand!" Cassie shouts back. "Of course they're gaining, they're offroaders!"

Cao looks back and sees them more clearly. They're wearing armor of metal, leather and spikes and wearing masks and makeup, brandishing weapons ranging from spears, swords and axes to guns. He's never seen or heard of anything like this.

"Are all people from Earthrealm like this?" he asks.

"Maybe in the movies!" Cassie says, though Cao has no idea what those are.

Jacqui is a bit taken aback, but Cassie laughs. "Hey, that reminds me of something my dad told me about a friend of his once! Back in the old Mortal Kombat tournaments when Shao Kahn was trying to marry my mom, this guy---"

Jacqui points ahead. "Cassie! Watch out!"

The blonde girl rapidly turns to avoid a pit of rocks and stones. Cao nearly throws up as the resumes speeding.

"Anyway, this guy right, he shouted, 'THE ELDER GODS ARE BULLSHIT!' and it always stuck with my dad. Sounds like you can empathize, huh man?"

"Yeah, like dad'd ever let me drive his favorite car!" She turns again.

"South!" Cao shouts. "Go south! That way!" he points.

"You're the one who lives here," Cassie says, turning the car.

Jacqui continues. "Anyway, these guys show up on the Golden Gate Bridge while we're driving on it through a giant portal, see us and their leader shouts that he wants us and our car, so all of them start chasing us! Next thing we know, we're driving straight through a portal and end up here and then---"

"Then we hit you," Cassie finishes her sentence. She looks in the rear-view mirror. "Shit! They're still catching up! JB, those motorbikes are coming in fast!"

"Where's the gun? You always have a gun!" Jacqui says.

"Shit, I left it in the trunk!" Cassie realizes.

"What the hell is a gun? What trunk? What even is all of this?!" Cao shouts. He struggles some more and adds, "And why won't this strap break?!" as he pulls on the seatbelt.

"Jacqui, take the wheel!" Cassie says as she sits up. Her friend grabs the wheel and switches places with her as Cassie climbs into the backseat to sit next to Cao. He gives her a strange look; she's wearing a white t-shirt and shorts, with strange shoes. He's never seen anyone like her, especially not someone with such creamy skin and blonde hair who dresses so lightly.

She tips down her dark sunglasses. "What's your name?" she asks.

"Cao," he replies.

"Cao, I'm sorry," she says. "I can't say that enough, I really am, but those guys are after us and I didn't have enough time. You're the first person I've ever hit with a car so I didn't want to just leave you there in case you were, I don't know, dying."

He slowly nods. He looks at her lips and realizes she is chewing something; whatever it is smells unlike anything he's ever smelled before.

She opens up the seat between them, exposing some kind of hidden space. He looks and sees lots of shopping bags and boxes inside. "Damn, it's in the back," she says, climbing in, leaving her rear and legs sticking out. Cao cocks en eyebrow upwards as Jacqui suddenly turns to avoid another hill. Cao holds himself steady as Cassie climbs back out holding a black object that looks like a small weapon of some kind, though he doesn't know how it works.

"Cover your ears!" she says as she sits up and aims. She fires the glock three times, blasting a man off of his dirtbike. Cao looks back as the man falls off and the bike crashes.

Several more such men continue to advance, driving dangerously close and swinging things like chains and batons! Cao considers his options...

Cao reaches up to his shoulder and takes out his dadao. "Nice sword!" Cassie says. "If we weren't being chased by these Mad Max-rejects I'd ask to hold it!"

Cao cuts through the safety belt! "Hey! This car is expensive!" she says.

Just then, a biker with a friend on the back holding a plastic riot shield draws near! Cassie fires at it, but her rounds are ineffective, bouncing off the thick plastic and metal!

They draw near and reach for the car when suddenly Cao springs up, brandishing his sword! He shouts as he swings, bashing the shield away, exposing it to Cassie and allowing her to sink a few rounds into the driver's chest, causing them to spin out and crash!

"Nice teamwork!" Cassie says.

"Guys, hold on!" Jacqui shouts. They turn around and see they are headed straight for a canyon! Cassie and Cao duck down and hold on as Jacqui turns the wheel, causing the car to skid and stop just before the edge. She continues to drive forward as one of the bikers slides off the side and falls to his doom, screaming all the way.

"I see a path down up ahead!" Jacqui shouts back. "Keep holding them off!"

Cassie pops up but then ducks again as one of the bikers swings a chain at her! Cao swings at him with his sword but the biker backs off a bit before coming back!

Cao looks back and sees more coming up...

As the biker with the chain draws near, Cao swings again, but he blocks it with his own weapon, wrapping it around Cao's sword! He pulls back against the chain-wielder before Cassie points the gun in his face and fires, killing him. The man drags behind the car, still holding onto the chain, nearly taking Cao with him when he does!

Cassie grabs Cao and pulls him back into the car by his shirt as he unwraps the chain from the sword. The man's corpse is left behind.

"You're the property of Lord Crashsmash now!" he grins, most of his teeth missing. "He wants you and your car!"

Cassie manages to elbow the man in the guts and he lets go as she hangs dangerously halfway out the back of the red convertible.

Cao tries to block his swinging attack but the chain bends around the sword, smacking him in the face! Cao falls back, his head hitting the top of the car door as he falls behind the seat.

Cassie pops up and fires at the man, hitting him in the chest and his gastank. He falls back behind them, his bike exploding. Jacqui turns the car and drives down a somewhat steep hill that leads down from the cliff, with the bikers falling back.

Cao shakes his head and pulls himself up with Cassie's help. "You alright?" she asks. He nods, rubbing his bruised face. "Your head is really taking a beating today, dude," she says with a concerned tone.

"Uh, guys!" Jacqui says, looking in the rearview mirror. "Behind us!"

They both look back as a massive truck starts coming down the hill.

The massive, six-wheeled monstrocity appears at the top and chases them down, carried more by gravity than by its engines, which roar like beasts. The front of the vehicle has the skull of an Outworld Mammoth strapped to it, looking like the goring horns of a charging monster. Several men are hanging onto the side of the truck, hollaring and swinging weapons in adrenaline-filled mad glee as the truck nears.

"Oh, shit!" Cassie says, aiming at the window. The horns of the truck hit the back of their car, causing her to stumble forwards a bit.

Cao stabs the windshield, managing to crack it a bit, but it doesn't go all the way through! He pulls on it to try and pull it free!

Just then, one of the men from the top of the truck jumps down and kicks Cao in the face, knocking him backwards. Cao shakes his head as the man ends up on top of him, punching and attacking him as he pushes him down onto the hood of the vehicle.

The truck driver yanks a chain twice, bellowing the horns. The hill levels out as Jacqui and Cassie continue to drive in front of them.

He turns the wheel violently, and both Cao and the man atop him tumble off the side! Cao reaches up and manages to grab onto the side mirror of the shotgun-side door, his feet dangling dangerously close to the wasteland floor!

Cao reaches for the handle on the door and pulls on it, but it is locked! One of the men from above the truck shouts at his friends to hold onto his feet as he is lowered down to the thief to try and shake him off!

Cao looks out and sees Cassie as he stands up on top of the truck. She looks back at him as the wind picks up a bit. "I'm going to jump!" he shouts. She nods and sets the gun down as she holds up her arms.

Cao runs forward and leaps over the mammoth skull towards the convertible, but lands too short and ends up on the back of the car! He slides back and falls forward as Cassie jumps and grabs his hands with his back half hanging off the car!

His feet briefly drag along the dry ground and he shouts in pain before clenching his muscles and holding his legs up. Cassie grits her teeth and tries to pull him into the back.

Behind them, the mammothmobile veers off, its driver unable to see.

Jacqui begins driving into a section of the wastelands marked by the bleached bones of massive, giant creatures; everything from dragons to giants, ancient and powerful. She drives around the massive ribs sticking out of the flat, dry earth as the war convoy begins to catch up to them, only marginally slowed by the boney obstacles.

Jacqui, meanwhile, is busy driving around the massive bones trying to lose their pursuers. The difficult terrain gives them a moment of reprieve from the chase.

Cassie fishes around in her pocket for a small pack of silvery sticks. She takes one out and unfolds it, revealing a small piece of pink candy. "Gum?" she offers it to him.

He takes it and smells it before chewing it. "Don't swallow it, just chew," Cassie advises, trying to keep calm herself. Cao does so and is surprised at how sweet it tastes---it might just be the sweetest thing he's actually ever tasted. Cassie sits back and chews on a fresh piece as well. She looks over at him and asks, "So, uh... What's it like living in Outworld?"

He gives her a strange look. "What's it like living in Earth?"

"Guys!" Jacqui shouts to get their attention. They're speeding towards another gorge, but a massive skull sticking out of the ground at an angle could serve as a ramp! "Should I go for it?"

"Go for it!" Cassie shouts.

"No! Don't go for it!" Cao shouts after her.

"Too late, I'm going for it!" Jacqui cries, slamming her foot on the gas.

They hit the skull and ramp high up into the air, each of them screaming and holding on for life. They rocket through the air, leaving a trail of dirt and dust behind them as they fly across the gap.

They land on the other side as the warparty stops, shouting at them and shooting around them. "Go, go, go!" Cassie encourages her friend as they drive off, leaving the bonelands and the war party behind them.

Cao looks back and sees a car with massive wheels and a glowing skull on its hood as an ornament drive up.

The warparty follows the lead vehicle around as they search for another way across. Cassie lets out a sigh of relief. "I think we lost them for now," she says. "Fuck, I thought we were done for back there."

Jacqui slows down a bit but continues driving at a fairly speedy pace. "Everyone in one piece back there?" she asks, looking back at them.

"So far so good," Cassie replies, leaning forward to hug her friend from behind. She breaks away and gives Cao a friendly punch on the shoulder. "Nice work, man! You can really hold your own!"

"Yeah, thanks..." he says, looking out. It's still early morning, and they're heading south. 'Good...' he thinks to himself. 'Maybe we'll reach the jungle soon...'

Jacqui finds a cave and pulls into it, stopping the car. They both hop out and look around the outside of it. "Man... Johnny is going to kill us," Jacqui says.

"I think, given the circumstances, dad will be cool," Cassie replies. "Which reminds me..." She takes out her cell phone. "Ugh. Of course. No signal in other realms. Shit..."

"We've still got a full tank. At least we filled up before all hell broke loose," Jacqui says.

Cao sits up and idly wonders what they're both talking about. Signal, tank... They really are from another world entirely.

Jacqui opens up the hood of the car and waves away some smoke. "This old boy's not been pushed this hard in a while. Gonna need some work. We got tools?"

"Don't think so," Cassie says.

Jacqui spits into her hands. "Alright then, by hands it is."

Cassie looks at her watch and begins fiddling with it.

Cao sits up in the backseat. "So, what happens now?"

Cassie takes a deep breath. "Okay. We're trapped in another hostile realm. We don't have any real food or water. We're completely unprepared and wearing casual clothing, and I'm out of bullets. Good news is, we have a car. Bad news is that sooner or later we'll run out of gas and there's an army of psychopaths trying to chase us down." She reaches into her pocket and takes out the gum case. "And I'm out of gum, too." She crumbles it up and tosses it aside.

"Alright, what's the plan?" Jacqui asks.

Cassie folds her arms. "Well, if we're going to get back home, we'll need that lead car."

"What about it?" Cao asks.

"It's got some kind of portal-generator," Jacqui explains. "These guys have been popping in and out of Earthrealm ever since the invasion twenty years ago, using it."

"One time, when mom was home, she had a classified document. I wasn't supposed to read it because it was Top Secret-level clearance but I did. It was an OWEA report on them; apparently, they're all a collection of people who were displaced during the portal storms when Shao Kahn invaded. They all banded together here in Outworld and somehow made a small army. They found some magical skull that opens up portals and instead of rejoining civilization with it they've been pillaging and raiding their way across the realms ever since."

"But why?" Cao asks.

Cassie shrugs. "The OWEA has reclaimed pockets of people who were brought to Outworld over the last twenty years, but these guys... I guess the core of their original group was a motorcycle gang, a prison bus full of convicts, a military convoy and a group of truckers. I guess they all decided, fuck it, they were going to live out their fantasy of doing whatever they wanted and don't want to go back to a normal life. They've been raiding Earthrealm ever since, recruiting new members, stealing gasoline and cars. Real upstanding people."

"The OWEA has been trying to apprehend them for years," Jacqui explains. "But they keep giving them the slip thanks to the lead car's portal generator."

Cao tries to follow along but is mostly lost. "I'm sorry, but what's an OWEA?"

"That's the Outer World Exploration Agency," Cassie says. "Our parents are in it. Well, my mom and her dad."

Jacqui holds out her hand to Cao. "Specialist Jacqueline Briggs, nice to meet you." He shakes her hand.

"Specialist Cassie Cage," she introduces herself, shaking his hand as well. "You said your name was Cao, right?" He nods. "Well, Cao, I don't suppose you can create portals, can you?"

"I'm nobody like that," he says. "Just a..." he pauses, not wanting to call himself a thief. "...Just a wanderer."

Cassie continues. "Well, my mom is General Sonya Blade. Heard of her?"

"What about Colonel Jackson Briggs?" Jacqui asks.

Cao shakes his head. "Really?" Cassie says. "I would've thought they'd be legends around here. They helped fight in the Outworld-Earthrealm War twenty years ago."

"I wasn't born," Cao says.

"Well, neither were we," she replies. "Point is, they're high-ranking members of an interrealm teleportation agency. I'm sure they'll come looking for us."

"They would, if they knew where we were," Jacqui points out.

"Ah hah, but mom thought ahead," Cassie says, holding up her watch. "This baby right here has a tracking device. They'll hone in on us as soon as they realize we're in Outworld."

"Well, that might be a while," Jacqui says. "I mean, it's not like Johnny exactly checks up on us while we're away... It might be a bit before he even notices we're gone."

"He'll try and call," Cassie says. "It won't be too long... That is, I hope."

Cao rifle around the backseat for a moment, finding his backpack and Ashrah's hat. He may have lost his shirt and sword but at least he still has both of these. He picks it up and opens it, taking out some food. "I have supplies," he says. "I don't know how long they'll last between three people instead of one, but it's something." He holds up a canteen. "Water, too."

Cassie holds her hand out for the water and eagerly drinks. "Thanks dude," she says with a smile as she hands it to Jacqui, who also takes a gulp. As she does, Cao looks in the opening that leads to the trunk, seeing all the shopping bags.

"What are these?" he asks, holding one up.

"Just, you know, stuff," Cassie says. "We bought it and were on our way home."

"This is what we get for taking the scenic route..." Jacqui grumbles.

"Shopping... You bought all of these?"

"Yeah," Cassie says. "You guys probably don't have malls here in Outworld, huh?"

"It feels like every sentence you say a word that I know nothing about," Cao admits. "What is a mall?"

"Uh, a big marketplace?" Cassie offers. Cao seems to understand that.

"Are you rich?" Cao asks, looking at the bags. He reaches into one and takes out a bright blue hoodie jacket.

"Well, we're not too bad off," Cassie shrugs.

"Yeah, sure thing girl," Jacqui smirks. "Little miss 'I'm a Cage AND a Blade!' over here trying to be modest."

Cassie shoots her friend a glare. She looks back at Cao before changing the topic. "Hey, your head is still a bit bloody. You want me to take a look at that, man?"

Cao gives her a nod. She walks around the car and takes out a first aid kit from the glove compartment before hopping into the backseat and sitting next to Cao. He feels a bit nervous about her clothing and idly wonders about how he must smell, but she doesn't seem to either notice or mind. With some water and a rag, she cleans the cut and bruise on his head and then applies a stinging liquid that makes him squint a bit. "Sorry," she apologizes. "So, for a wanderer, you're pretty limber, huh?"

"I travel a lot," he lies, though in the context of recent events it's actually pretty close to the truth.

"You fight a lot?" she asks.

"I try not to but trouble's been finding me recently," he sighs.

"I hear you on that one," Cassie smiles. "This is the second time I've ever had to shoot someone."

"The second?" Jacqui asks, sticking her head out. "What was the first?"

"I never really talked about this, but... When I was eleven, this crazy stalker dude for my dad, some freak mental case who thought he was a tarkatan or something, like he grafted metal blades onto his arms and shit, he broke into my house and tried to hurt me. I grabbed mom's gun and put him down."

"Damn, girl," Jacqui whistles. "Why didn't you ever talk about it?"

Cassie shakes her head. "I just try to forget about that freak."

Cao listens in silence before asking, "Are there a lot of people like that in Earthrealm?"

"No, life is pretty normal there, at least where we live," Cassie says as she begins to wrap some guaze around his head. "In fact, we live in one of the nicer parts of the world."

"I've only heard stories of Earthrealm," Cao says.

"Well, I've only heard stories of Outworld," Cassie replies with a smile. "How come the sky isn't purple?"

"It's a seasonal thing," Cao says. "Is Earthrealm a land of riches?"

Cao clears his throat and tries his best to impress her. "Well, it all started a few days ago. Since then, I've stolen from diplomats, run away from shokan, seduced a different vampire, been forced to fight in a giant arena where I killed a colossal, man-eating snake and a great horned tormentor beast, travelled to the Living Forest and tricked a bunch of shadow ninja wraiths."

Both Cassie and Jacqui are listening actively. He continues, "And all the while I've been hunted by Kotal Kahn's entire Empire because he hates thieves. He killed my father and his assistant killed my mother and ever since then he's been out for me and my sisters."

"I'm sorry, but 'seduced a vampire'?" Cassie says. "Is that what got you into this situation?"

"No, a different vampire. There were two. The one who bit my sister is dead." He looks at her. "How do you know about vampires? Do you have them in Earthrealm?"

"Well, I had my sword with me at the time," he says. "I kind of... let it eat me so I could attack it from the inside. This was all in the arena Kotal Kahn forced me to fight in a few days ago."

Cassie whistles a bit. "Wow... and I thought my life was complicated. Everything I've heard about this Kotal Kahn dude paints him in a pretty positive light, but does he really suck that hard?"

"Everyone else seems to love him," Cao grumbles. "His Empire is full of sheep and he's the shepherd. I hate all of it..."

Cassie isn't quite sure how to respond. "Hey, man, yeah... I can see where you're coming from. Fuck the system, right?" She gives a nervous laugh.

Cao shakes his head. "Sorry, I just... have a problem with the current Imperial Regime."

Jacqui then asks, "So, legit, you steal to stay alive? You and your sisters?"

"Only option we ever had," Cao replies.

"Damn, that's a hard card to be dealt." She closes the hood and walks around to lean on the car door with slightly greasy hands.

Cassie scratches the side of her head as she looks at the shopping bags. "We never really had to steal before," she admits. "I mean, sometimes I would sneak a couple bucks from dad's wallet, but... That's rough, man."

"Well, you're from a different world," Cao replies. "I can't exactly hold you to the same rules or standards as Outworld."

"True..." Cassie nods. "Hey... I just realized, you're kind of like Aladdin."

"Well, no," Cassie says. She gets an idea and takes out her phone, turning it to face her. She scoots uncomfortably close to Cao. "Smile!" she says, but he's a bit confused, and suddenly a bit surprised by the white flash that follows. Cassie then shows him the screen of the selfie she just took of herself with him. "See? This is a picture."

Cao is amazed, to say the least. "How... Is it magic?"

"More like tech," she says, bringing up a game on her phone as she begins to teach him how to play Tetris.

Cao shakes his head a bit. "We should keep moving," he changes the subject. "There's a jungle down south. Those warriors might not be able to follow us down there."

"A jungle, huh?" Jacqui says. "We might be able to hide the car in the foliage or something..."

"Oh, shit!" Cassie says. "I completely forgot!"

She jumps out of the car and opens up the trunk. "We have that tent, Jacqui!"

"I did too," the other girl admits.

"Tent?" Cao asks, looking into the trunk.

"We were actually planning on going camping so we bought a tent. It's not a big one but maybe we can use it and hide out in the jungle. Shit, maybe we can go all Rambo on those raiders."

"I wouldn't get that far ahead of yourself, girl," Jacqui points out. "We still don't have too many supplies."

"We've got Cao with us. He's got some food and water, plus we can find stuff in the jungle to eat. We went through boot, Jacqui, I think we can handle a little trek through the jungle."

As the girls converse, Cao begins to hear a noise from deeper in the cave... a kind of strange growling.

"Uh, girls..." he says.

"I'm just saying, what kind of diseases or monsters live in the jungles of Outworld, Cass? It's not like we can just roll in and go full native right away."

"Come on, JB, where's your sense of adventure? I mean, I don't want to be here any more than you, but until we figure out a way home, we might as well see some of the sights."

"Girls..." Cao says as the noise grows louder.

"Girl, you need to think more. We don't even have any weapons and I'd rather not eat some strange fruit I pick from some kind of alien tree."

"Well then I'll fashion the spears and you can chuck them, how about that?"

"Oh you did NOT just fucking---"

"Girls!" Cao shouts as a creature begins to emerge from deeper within the cavernous depths. They both turn and immediately drop their argument as they turn to hear the noise. Jacqui jumps in the driver seat and turns on the lights, revealing an eight-foot-tall white creature with a boney carapace, a mouthful of sharp teeth and a long tongue.

"Oh fuck, it's a fucking xenomorph!" Cassie shouts.

The creature screams as it is lit up and runs forward, grabbing the front of the car!

Cao reaches for a rock and grabs onto it, smashing it against the monster's ankle. It looks down at him and roars.

Fortunately, this brings its head close enough for him to bash the other eye with the rock. The monster brings up its foot and kicks Cao away as it rubs its eyes.

Cao tries to stand but his leg is weak, and so he trips and falls.

As Cao hobbles his way back to the car, Cassie's hands glow green and she blasts the monster with some kind of green energy bolts. Jacqui helps Cao into the car and shouts to Cass, who makes her way back and jumps into the passenger seat.

The monster suddenly charges towards them! Jacqui begins to back up rapidly but the creature closes the distance fast and tries to leap onto the hood!

Cao puts a hand on Cassie's shoulder and leaps up, bringing his good foot down on the monster's head in a descending kick. The monster lets go of the hood and slides back.

But as it does, it's tongue shoots out and wraps around Cao's foot! The monster is dragged and Jacqui continues backing up while both girls hold onto Cao's arms.

They back out of the cave and the monster shouts, letting go and slinking back into his home. Cassie and Jacqui pull Cao into the car and get him situated in the backseat as they all breathe heavily.

"Fuck, dude, your foot got fucked up," Cassie says as she gets into the back and prepares to work on it.

"Not my day..." Cao mutters.

"Shit, you're really bleeding," Cassie says as she tries to stem the flow. "That thing's teeth were sharp as hell... You're lucky you still have your foot..." She opens up the medkit again. "I don't really have any painkiller so this stuff might sting a lot," she says as she prepares.

Cao grits his teeth as she treats his wound, using training she received in a combat medic course. Jacqui continues to drive south, focusing on getting distance from the creature and its cave.

Cao leans back and sighs a bit as Cassie patches up his leg. She sets his leg in her lap, not caring if she gets his blood on her, as she goes about her work. Cao manages to eat some food and drink some water from his backpack as she bandages his leg.

"We'll need to change these later," she says. She looks down at him and realizes he's nodded off a bit. Experimentally, she pokes him in the stomach, and when he doesn't stir, places her hand on it and lets it rest there.

Cao isn't fully asleep and feels her hand, not minding too much, but wondering at her intentions.

"Jungle ahead!" Jacqui says as she drives on.

Cao opens his eyes and briefly meets Cassie's as they sit up and look onwards at the approaching green forest. Jacqui pulls up to it and drives inside, finding a thick canopy of leaves to hide the car in.

"I don't think they'll see it from here," she says, dusting off her hands. "I'm going to look for things we can use for shelter."

"I'm on weapons detail," Cassie says.

Cao gets out and walks, testing out his leg. It's not as bad anymore but still a bit tender. He follows Jacqui, offering his help.

"Thanks," she says, taking off her outer shirt and tossing it into the car, leaving her with a dark tank top. "Figures this jungle would be hot and humid."

Cao helps her gather sticks, wood and leaves, getting to know her a bit. "I grew up on a farm, actually. Mom and dad like living a simpler life while dad isn't doing his job at the OWEA."

"You said you were a specialist. What kind of a specialist?"

"It's just a rank. Cass and I are both in the Army, but we're on extended leave before we go off to attend Special Forces training. We're both a bit of military brats, with her mom and my dad."

"You talk about them a lot," Cao remarks.

"Yeah, they're larger-than-life. We're all just products of our parents, after all." She pauses. "Hey... I'm sorry to hear about what happened to your folks."

"Was a long time ago," Cao says dismissively. "I can't even really remember them too well."

They return to the car and start setting up a camp around it, hidden from view. Jacqui instructs him on what to do as they begin to construct a makeshift shelter. She gets out the tent and starts to set it up in the middle.

"Yeah, but like I was saying, my mom's really cool. Level-headed. She's got a kind of quiet, inner strength. Dad's a real badass through and through, always pushing me to go harder and be better." She adjusts some of the poles. "He's a hero. I wanna be like him."

"Must be nice," Cao replies, not trying to sound like he is jealous.

"Sorry," Jacqui apologizes anyway. "Let's change the subject."

"What's the military like in Earthrealm?"

"There are a lot, but we belong to our country's military. It's tough, but not so bad. Our folks are very proud that we're serving in it."

"What about you? How do you feel about it?"

"I like it," Jacqui says. "It suits me. Discipline, regiment, ceremony. Keeps me fit and active, gives me a higher order, you know?"

"Can't say I do," Cao replies. "I have a problem with most of Outworld's established higher order."

"Oh," Jacqui replies. "Well, I mean, you seem like a nice person but I understand why you have a bone to pick with the Kahn."

"I'd rather his bones get picked by vultures." Jacqui's brow raises as she gives him a worried look. "Sorry, I just... Not a good topic. What do you think about Cassie?"

"Hate her," Jacqui replies, surprising Cao. "Boy, you take everything pretty literally, huh? She's my best friend since childhood. Probably the only one who can take me in a fight, too. I'd trust her with my life and I know she feels the same way."

"I'm just getting used to the way you Earthrealmers talk," Cao replies. "...And dress, too."

Jacqui looks down at her shirt. "Yeah, I guess they don't really have this style here in Outworld, huh? It's not exactly like I have my uniform on me."

"Yeah, uh, I'll just...," Cao trails off, trying not to be too distracted as he busies himself with his work.

Jacqui seems to notice and shoots him a bit of a cute smile before she resumes her work. She has the tent all set up now and climbs inside. A minute later, Cassie walks up with stones, sticks and some other things she thought would be useful. "Aw, sweet, you guys got the tent up, good work." She drops them next to the tent and climbs inside. "Come on in, Cao!"

Cao climbs into the tent and finds Jacqui and Cassie organizing their supplies. He sits in a corner as Cassie crawls past him to zip up the opening and close it before scooting back next to Jacqui, who asks for Cao's backpack.

He pours out its contents and they take stock of the contents. "What's this?" Cassie asks, holding up a small dry gourd with liquid in it.

"Rice wine," Cao says.

"Neat," she says, uncorking it and smelling it. "Maybe later." She closes it and puts it back in the pile.

"I think we might have enough for two or three days between us if we ration it out," Jacqui says. "Maybe we can just wait for your mom to show up."

"I think it's a good plan," Cassie says, tapping her watch.

"We'll have to be careful," Cao says. "I was told that this jungle has amazons."

"Amazons? Like tribal women warriors?" Jacqui asks.

"Something tells me that they're not the Wonder Woman variety," Cassie says.

"So, when we sleep, we'll take turns on the watch," she says. "It's warm now, so maybe we won't need a fire."

"We could use a shower, though," Cassie says, looking at how dirty all three of them are. "We should look for a river or a lake or something."

"I could go look," Cao offers.

"I should go with you," Cassie says. "Jacqui, you want to stay and watch the camp?"

"Maybe you should," Jacqui instead suggests. "And I'll go look for the river with Cao."

"Or Cao could stay here and we both could go," Cassie says. "What's it matter? So long as two people go in case something happens and one person is here to watch the camp."
