Then, you'll have to report it to us, and we'll figure out a way to deal with it. You should probably think of this as a scouting mission instead of an investigative one. I doubt the Quincy could be as inconspicuous as a normal soul residing in Rukongai considering its origins." As you pack the documents back into the folder, Urahara takes it and puts it away. "Our reputation is already poor, and I'd rather not let this kind of thing leak to the public. This is why I'd like our Division - as well as you personally - to handle this. But try to avoid taking the risk of actually getting rid of it by yourself."

"Couldn't the target be a Shinigami with a specific Shikai?" You ask. Your Captain nods.

"It's not impossible, but there should be no Shinigami deployed to that District at the moment. If you see any, report them to us immediately, and then question them. The Denreishinki will be fully functional and at your disposal."

You nod.

The 4th District is among the wealthiest in Rukongai, though naturally, it is incomparable to the marble streets and houses of the Seireitei. The true deterioration in quality of life begins beyond this district, but even here, the truly poor and needy part of the population is no longer difficult to seek out, like how it is in the First District.

It's a long way off from the Seireitei, several weeks of nothing but travel. Despite the distance, communication is still practically instant thanks to the invention of the Denreishinki. When you arrive, you buy a room at an inn, and get to work.

First, you check the place where the body was first discovered. Because it's been months since the crimes, there are no useful traces remaining.

Discussing the murders with the locals proved to be difficult. They're afraid that doing so will get them involved, and the few willing to share something know practically nothing.

One day during your investigation, stumble onto Date Gorou, the large ex-officer of the 7th Division. He offers accommodations and treats you like one would treat an old friend. You report his presence to HQ, and they reply that he's harmless. Retired or otherwise exiled Shinigami, as a rule of thumb, have their powers stripped from them, and there are documents to confirm that Gorou underwent the process as well.

Unfortunately, he can't tell you much about the incidents; not because he doesn't wish to, but because he doesn't know. But the district is facing difficulties elsewhere - the members of a local dojo are using power to harass the locals.

This Matsu dojo is certainly a suspicious party with something resembling a motive to have killed the Shinigami in charge of the area. An agent of the Seireitei is responsible for upholding the peace, while the martial artists' goals seem to lie in the exact opposite direction.

"'Martial artists' is too prestigious of a name for them. They're just bandits with cheap swords and spears and hardly the knowledge of how to use them. Even a trainee Shinigami could make short work of them." Gorou says.

Much like in a story wherein an unknown wandering warrior defeats all the members of a dojo, you could teach them a lesson in that same way, accepting Gorou's request for help. But on the other hand, if the killer has a human form, he could very well be part of that dojo. But because you do not have the uniform on you, your intentions might not be given away even if you were to start a fight, and yet might reveal unusual elements in their ranks right away.

But observing them from afar to try and figure out their agenda might bring results as well.

On the next day, you begin investigating that group.

The Matsu dojo really are just a bunch of thugs. Instead of spending their time training, gangs of them are walking around the district, harassing people, extorting shops, wasting their ill-gotten gains in bars and inns... Resistance is shot down with armed threats, though they never get into fights with anything tougher than the furniture they smash for emphasis. Another common threat in the case of disobedience is 'the boss will hear about this'. It's likely that Matsu Shingen not only does not discourage his subordinates, but to the contrary, encourages their unlawful activities.

You spend an entire day trailing one such gang. Tired of their 'hard work', the martial artists decide to rest at a bar. During the resultant brawl and commotion, you were able to occupy a table in the far corner of the establishment without them noticing. One particular subject, spoken with hushed tones, has caught your attention.

It seems that either Shingen knows the Quincy you're looking for, or he is the one. Stalking him would be difficult, considering how much time he spends surrounded by his subordinates. A random glance could give you away.

The master of the Matsu dojo is a towering mountain of finely honed muscle. Shingen's curly black hair reaches down to his broad shoulders, and his wide eyes constantly glare with a fearsome fury. The man spends his days watching his students fight, which seems more like an affair meant to keep him entertained than to encourage improvement, and his free time is spent on training alone, away from the others.

His power is staggering for someone who isn't even a Shinigami. This may not be definitive proof that he is your target, unless he uses an ability he is not supposed to have, but even so, this fact is enough to place him at the top of the list of potential suspects.

During a routine session of pummeling a log with his bare hands, Shingen abruptly ceases his strikes and speaks, his booming voice resonating through the quiet evening field.

"How long will you be standing there?"

Not any of his many subordinates with a lucky glance, but the man himself, in the middle of practice, has managed to spot you despite your efforts. He isn't looking your way, so he must have only sensed your presence. That might mean that he's uncertain of your current position. Perhaps attacking or simply getting away isn't out of the question yet.

From the perspective of an attack, he's no different from a Hollow. A sneak attack to a vulnerable point should get the job done. In the case of an open battle breaking out, you have several Shikai to fall back on. And if he's as durable as a real Shinigami, you might be able to ask him something before he perishes.

Upon hearing your voice, the man turns around. "You're intruding on the territory of my dojo. I am Matsu Shingen." He says, his fists clenched tightly. His glare is as intense as ever.

"Is that so? Your eyes are dull only in appearance."

Fifteen meters stretch out between the two of you, but that distance is something that could be crossed at a moment's notice.

"Are you here for revenge? If you came here to assassinate me, you just missed your chance." He says. But was there really a chance?

"How did you spot me?"

"The ground. No one comes to this field but me, and yet I found tracks that are not my own."

So there was a chance. You couldn't have used it without being certain.

"Your breathing is calm, your presence untraceable. You've asked me who I am, and yet made no effort to introduce yourself. Who the hell are you?" Shingen demands.

"You haven't answered my question, either."

He grunts. "If you want the answer, then come. You'll receive it in your death."

This is risky. Depending on how long the battle drags on, Shingen's students might arrive. Individually, they're no issue for you to handle, but in a large group, and while fighting their master all at the same time, it would be extremely difficult to survive.

It seems that the man intends to fight barehanded. You spot no weapons or tools on his person; none of the crosses traditionally utilized by the Quincy. Even so, he stands a decent chance with just his fists alone, considering his power.

And yet raw power alone isn't enough to defeat a Shinigami. Your Zanpakuto's special ability could turn the tides, but the question here is whether it's worth starting a fight in the first place.

Shingen quietly observes as you draw your sword.

"Rise above the other, Hashimaru." The sword splits in two. Both halves are perfectly capable on their own; but used in tandem, they can overcome the strongest foe.

"Shinigami..." Shingen whispers. He takes up a stance, his spiritual power flaring. If he treated you with arrogance before, revealing your true nature has made him serious.

But he shows no fear. When you dash towards him, wielding the twin swords, he makes a single step and leaps forward. You parry the incoming jab by crossing both blades in front of yourself. The fist collides with them, flesh cutting itself on the sharp edges. You stop the strike just barely, but can feel your footing giving away.

The second blow comes immediately afterwards, before you can regain a proper stance. His left hand blurs towards your chest like a lunging snake. In a clumsy effort, your weapons dig into the attacking arm, shoving the blow aside; the redirected blow strikes you in the side.

The pain is agonizing. Your legs buckle under the strain, but you had the common sense to roll away and back up to your feet.

With bleeding, mutilated arms, Shingen continues his relentless advance. Those limbs should be unusable... but he still has two legs left. Does he intend to sacrifice those as well?

You just need to endure two more strikes, and then...

As the man's foot is launched towards your head, you bring the weapons down. The heavy limb drops down with a loud thump, and Hashimaru grows yet stronger. The setting sun's crimson glow conceals the foul rain of blood.

Matsu Shingen falls, and so do you. If his strike connected, it would have been the end. You seal the formidable swords. Soren's Shikai takes quite a toll; it's not something to be used lightly.

The commotion of the brief battle has drawn no attention. The sun sets by the time it takes you to cope with the half-strike that Shingen did land on you, and yet nobody arrives to the scene.

You hear a booming laughter erupt through the field. As he bleeds in the moonlit night, Matsu Shingen laughs. His hulking body moves. He stands up.

The cut arms bear hardly even a trace of their previous wounds. His leg... is attached once more.

Your role is the gathering of information, but this is dangerous. There is no telling what other tricks this man may have up his sleeves, and your capacity to deal with them is rather questionable. The risk isn't worth it.

You bolt backwards, a surge of spiritual power backing your retreat. Shingen sprints after you, but the sustained injuries make his gait awkward inefficient. The use of Shunpo makes your retreat almost effortless.

You leave the man behind, sneaking into the nearest alleyway to conceal your presence. The streets around the Matsu dojo are quiet. The obnoxious spike of Shingen's Reiatsu soon fades from your senses; it seems that he gave up.

When you make sure that you aren't being tailed, you return to your rented room.

What gave you away were the tracks, not his sensory abilities. He shouldn't be able to find you here... not that you intend to keep to the same place for long. You take out your Denreishinki and send a report of what had just occurred.

You receive instructions to proceed with caution, not that you didn't intend to do that already. Shinigami will arrive to take care of it, but that is going to take time, considering the distance between the Seireitei and here.

But at least now you know who to keep an eye on, even though getting caught has become that much more dangerous.

The best you can do for now is making sure that Shingen doesn't get away. You treat the wound on your side and get a little rest.

It must be the blood on your clothes, you think at first. But when you enter the scene of the crime, her reaction becomes much more understandable.

Inside the room, splayed out on the floor in a pool of his own blood, is a person with a large hole in his chest. You've seen this kind of wound before. It served as the reason for this mission. But what does this corpse mean? Is Shingen the murderer, or could he not have murdered this man last night?

You didn't notice it at first, but his lifeless eyes are just like yours.

...No, not just his eyes. The shape of his nose, the size of his ears, the form of his chin, his height... Every single feature... everything is yours. It's all identical.

You feel your heart sink. Something about this is... frightening.

The person that's been killed is, without a doubt... you.

It wasn't impossible, but it would be hard! Shingen still has something nasty up his sleeve, and only a specific fighting style on Ryouta's part could have saved his day.

Every option has downsides and upsides, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with retreating if you're not certain about your chances! Please keep in mind that I'm not out to screw anyone over in a "haha got you!" kind of way, so never hesitate to do what you think is right!

They're not in the same spots, but their origin appears to be the same. There's only one wound here, right through the heart, whereas the Shinigami had multiple all around the body.

The new kill most likely happened during the night.

This also throws out, at the moment, the ability for a shinigami to drop decoy bodies with the same wounds or without wounds. Most shinigami lack secondary shikai modes so while this may still be feasible, it is likly they would have an accomplice.

The first victims woulds seem to indicate a struggle, or more likely torture due to the volume of wounds described. This seems to be a single shot without struggle, which again, happened before our meeting with the mob boss it seems.

The cloths are also different and it is not common for one to change. This could mean that there's a rat in 12th to radioed in our appearance and had a conspirator attempt to assassinate us, however that does not explain why, for all intents and purposes, this new victim is or appears to be a copy of us.

This strike is way too surgical to not have previous intel on us and seeing as how we just got here so it's unlikely an individual would be able to pinpoint us so quickly and effectivly, I'm very much willing to bet the assassin is working with someone in 12. Perhaps we're stumbling onto something bigger here and they're protecting the plot rock or are a quincy sympathizer.

In summation this is highly premeditated and must be treated as such. Figuring out why we are a clone(?) is secondary as I doubt it plays into the core of this mission. Be weary of the machinations of the 12th... I feel there is a spy among them.

Like you're making this way more complicated than it has to be. For whatever reason, we had a doppelganger who happened to be living in the Fourth sector of the Rukongai, and after we ran fron Shingen his goons found the clone, thought it was us, and then Shingen killed him.
