"AVAST, SERPENT!"

Your pistol fires another shot off into the hide of the slithering beast. With your cutlass, you cut clean through its neck.

Yet, just like legends, more heads seem to take the place of the one you just cut off!

You are Jack Albator, handsome adventurer, slayer of monsters, and-
WOH! Hold that thought! You got to concentrate against this serpent right now!

Cody unleashes a fury of wind straight at the monster; the torrent of dust seems to pierce every one of his eyes.
It screeches in a tone that you're fairly sure can't be reproduced by a living creature.

Cody uses this brief respite to dive behind the tree-line, near where you're hiding.

"The fuck is that thing?"
"Hydra." You say, through grit teeth.

"A what?"

"Hydra, it has many heads, and many, many mouths." You reload your pistol, "When ye cut one off, it's as if two more come back."
"How do we beat him!?"

"Well, Hercules burned the neck stumps."
"So what, we need fire?!"

"Not really." You muse, noticing Dorje joining the fight. "Follow my lead."
You leap up and over your cover and toward the fight once more. You signal to the white-haired kid that you need a favor:
"HEY!" You shout at him, "SAND! LOTS OF IT! NEED IT NOW!"

Dorje smashes a face in, but follows your command. With a stomp, the earth below him has turned entirely into soft sand.
You raise your cutlass and throw a wave of water at it. The serpent's lungs are filled, and it starts to gag and cough.
The remainder of that wave slushes by the beast, and saturates the sands of the pit.

"NOW, CODY!"

>Cont.
>>
You didn't even need to tell him, he summons another one of his powerful tornadoes. It grabs the monster and effortlessly tosses it into the pit. The sand and water mixes in the monster's mouth to form a sticky sludge which clings to it.

One of its heads desperately snaps at Dorje. With a disgusting gurgle, the makeshift bog swallows it whole.

"Holy-" Cody's mouth is agape.

"Huh, I didn't even think about that." Dorje seems shocked.

You put your hand on Dorje's head and muss up his white hair.
"Aye, that's why I'm the Capt'n." You smile, "Ye did pretty good out thar, ye ever fight a demon before?"
"Once." He pulls your hand off his head. "And I had a lot of help."

"Aw, Kid. C'mon." Cody taps his shoulder. "You did fine, great job with the sand."

Toward the bog, you notice that there are still bubbles rising to the surface.

"Argh." You sit down, rubbing your arm. "Bastard hits hard."

"You okay, Jack?"
"Yar."

"What the hell drove you two out this far, anyway?!" Dorje seems surprised.
"Lookin' for Yuuki, of course!" Cody grumbles. "Fuckin' snake scared the shit out of me, though."

"Aye, ye don't know the half of it." You grumble. "Did aye even get to tell ye about the attack this mornin'?"
"Attack? No."

"Listen, stop!" Dorje interrupts. "Kayda found Yuuki!"

"Seriously?"
"All that for nothin' then." You stand up. "Lemme guess, she just headed into town fer a few and everyone got worried, right?"

"Not.. really." Dorje seems to motion something with his hands. "It's more like.. Well, come back to the castle. Kayda found her passed out on this path carved out by the snake."

"Huh. Does she know why?"
"I think Kayda knows, she wouldn't really tell me."

"Is Yuuki hurt?" Cody seems worried.

"She didn't.. look hurt, but she had some kind of marking of her head."

Cody looks at you, and you try to think of an answer.

"Aye'm sorry to hear that, not sure if we should go back yet 'er not."

"Why not?"

You reach into your coat pocket and pull out a sheet of folded paper. You got this from one of the black-clad men you beat the fluff out of on the way over here.
"'This, it's a list of names, dun' recognize dem, but was hopin' to find more of the scoundrels to maybe 'pursuade' them."

"Good idea." Cody stretches his hands, "Want to back and check on Yuuki if I keep lookin' around here?"

"We should all go back, together."

Dorje seems to sigh in relief, but Cody almost seems anxious.

"Besides, aye want to check on Akiko and that Dragon Girl, aye didn't really get to hear her side of the story yet. Ye know where they be holdin' up?"
"Yeah, I do." Cody lights a cigarette. "It's a place just outside of town. It's where she keeps all her hunting gear. "

"Why does Akiko keep her hunting gear there?"
"She doesn't trust her sis not to sell it." Cody smiles.

That would be cold, even for Atsuko.

--

"Heeey!" Cody yells in the window of a building that seems abandoned. "This is your mornin' call!"

Silence.

"Think they're home?"
"Maybe." Cody flicks his cigarette away. "Akiko might have seen that snake. She wouldn't resist an opportunity to fight somethin' like that."

There's a rustle behind you, and you immediately grab your revolver and turn to face it!

"Heya Cody, Jack." Akiko returns with some fish strung in a net. "And that other kid whose name I don't remember."
"Dorje."

"Sure, sure, Donna." Akiko smiles.
"Where's the.. girl. The dragon girl."

"Well.." Akiko pouts. "About that, I tried havin' her drag back some game and she nearly snapped like a twig! Hmph. You didn't give me a high-quality worker."

"She's not here to work."
"Sure sure, whatever. Anyway she keep sayin' how she needs to go back to Gallete but won't explain why."

"Whar is she?"

Akiko turns on her heel and searches behind her, before spotting something in the distance.
"'ere she comes now!"

Emerging from the woods is the scowling face of the horned-girl you saved yesterday. She's carrying what appears to be a monstrous deer over her head.

"Heya." You greet her. "Ye look mad."
"Just a little, yes." She frowns. "I'm gonna smell like blood for a month, now."

"It builds character." You say to her with a big, goofy grin.
Somehow, she doesn't seem very amused by this.

She groans and drops the animal carcass.
"I need a bath." She swings her massive tail around.

"We need to talk, first." Cody seems oddly serious.

"Bath first, then talk."
"No, we're on a strict time schedule. Talk first then bath."

This causes her to scowl even more.
"Fine, what is it?"

"Have ye heard from yer sister?"
"No." She frowns. "I hope she can find me. I didn't even tell her where I was going."

"Aye don't think it'll be hard to find ye." You think of the possibilities, "Especially if she decides to come lookin' fer ye."

"Want to tell us what you need to go back to Gallete for?"

Her eyes turn toward the animal carcass, and she starts to turn away from Cody.
Except, when she does, Akiko puts her hand on the dragon girl's shoulder.

She sighs, and then turns around to face you once again.
"The truth is.." The dragon girl starts, her eyes finding difficulty meeting your own. "I'm not the daughter of the Emerald dragon."
"Err, okay?"

"And also- " She studders, "That thing about the seasons and the harvest? That was a lie, too."

"I figured as much." Cody steps over the deer. "It's okay."

"I didn't want to leave Gallete." She confesses, "So I made up this dumb story hoping you would leave me alone. I didn't want to go with my sister, either. It's just-"

She puts her hands up to her face.
"Okay, let's just start over. When Gallete emptied out, she was worried about me and came over. I've been living in Gallete so long that I didn't want to leave, so she kind of- broke everything."

"Anythin' else?"
"No, that's it."

She continues staring at her feet, not once breaking contact with her toes.
"I'm sorry I lied, but you have to understand."

She's still maintaining contact with her toes.

"Violet, Look." You rub her scalp. "We have kind of an 'issue' goin' on that ye need to stay out of. But we can go get yer dad and yer sis and deal with it later."

Her gaze hasn't changed.

"What did ye like about catland anyway? That place sucks."

That's when her gaze meets yours.
"What do you mean 'sucks'?! Gallete is a wonderful nation! Everyone is kind, the people are noble, and-"
"That doesn't sound like the Catland aye know."

"W-well, I don't deal with the same people you do! My best friends are servants and soldiers. Maybe you were talking to the nobility."

"Aye didn't see much difference, they all acted like jerks; and also-"

You think about something else that she may know a little something about.
"What do ye know about a little girl who was imprisoned in the dungeon?"

She seems confused.
"What little girl imprisoned in the dungeon?"

You sigh, "Never mind."

"Is that all you four came out here to ask? What Gallete was like for me?"
"Aye just wanted to check in on ye. Was worried Gallete would want to-"

Wait a second.

"No, four."

"Guy that-"

You look to Cody, and he nods to you.
"Thanks miss gonna have to come back to you on that one gotta-go-bye."
"What? Where are you going?"

You dash forward to Dorje's dismay, and are hot on the trail of whatever this mysterious man was.
Cody bolts out in front of you, it seems he has a better bearing on where he went than you do.

"These trees, he went through the brush!" He swerves. "He's going back to the place we just were!"

You veer off and follow Cody through the layers upon layers of thick, overwhelming brush.

With a crash, you emerge from the dense forest and are left staring at-
Nothing.

Seems he slipped away, but very narrowly.
"Well now w-"
"Shh." Cody is examining the air.

His breathing becomes staggered for just a moment.

"This way."

He leads you along the edge of the forest layer, around to a cliffside.
On that cliffside, you can see a small encampment perched atop.

Cody leaps into the air, and you follow after him.
With a whump, you land in the center of the camp. Several soldiers eating their lunch are spooked nearly to death.

"Hey, who the hell are you?" One of the more well-dressed of them stands and confronts Cody.

He has bear ears.

Cody simply smiles at him, draws his revolver, and pulls the trigger.

--

So that has to be, eight? ten Bear people. All of them soldiers, all of them mysteriously inside of Biscotti's borders.
It's hard carrying fuzzy animals in a big bundle like this.

"Aye Cody, Yer a natural tracker."
"Ah what can I say." He picks up a couple Bearballs of his own. "My father was a ranger, and he taught me a few things."

Something is missing, though.

"'Ey." You search around, trying to be sure of something. "Where's Dorje?"

Cody's eyes dart around as well. Before falling back to you.

"Aye must be the worst babysitter in the world." You reckon.

Cody picks up yet another fluffball, "This makes eleven. We can't leave these things here, but we can't leave Dorje out there to rot."

You try to shoulder a net with fluff of your own, "Why can't we leave 'em here?"

Cody shoves the fuzzball into the net with the rest of them, "I don't want anyone knowing we found this camp. It's best if they're kept in the dark about this as much as possible. If they find out that we know, they might start trying to get desperate."

"Whars more desperate than attackin' a castle full of heroes?"
"I don't know, and I surely don't want to find out."

Cody slings the net over his shoulder, "In any case, we can have a quick look before we head back. Or just head back and have a search party find him. We probably outran him at the pace we were going. I completely forgot Dorje was just a kid."

That's true, but at the same time, you don't want to leave anyone out here. Especially a young kid.

"Hmph." You think about Cody's decision for a moment. "Tell ye what, can you hold this?"

You hand the bag full of bears to him.
"What'cha thinkin?"
"I'll go have a look, you take those back to the castle. Oh and, take this, too."

You hand him the letter, and he puts it in his pocket.
"Get both to Fritelli, I'll be right along."

After all, you doubt Dorje could have run off very far.

"Take care of yourself, Jack. If you need me, I'm just a shout away."
"Aye, take care."

Cody goes his separate way into the woods, as you start to retrace your steps.

Left at this tree, a right at this bend, here's the place you crashed into the woods-
There he is.
He's sitting on a fallen piece of timber, examining the ground.

"Dorje!"
"Huh!? Oh!"

He snaps to attention. You can see that his face is red.
"Ye okay, son?"

"Yeah! Yeah. Just.. I don't know forests very well."

"Alright, then why is yer face red?"

He squeaks, and then rubs his face with his sleeve before looking back toward you.
You're not amused.

".. I don't like being lost, is all. I'm fine."
He tries to walk past you.

Well we're up to triple digit posts now at least, so that's something.
>>
At the same time, I've been going for about four hours and got two posts done because of morning errands.

That's disgraceful. I wanted to start CPM in a couple hours, too

Anyway. Writing almost done.

You grab his shoulder,
"Wrong way."

"Oh! Uh, I knew that."

He starts walking a few more paces, also in the wrong direction.
"In fact, uh, why don't you lead the way?"

"When this is all over, we're gonna get you sum navigation lessons. Grab my hand."

He takes your hand and you immediately sling him onto your back.
"Hey! What!?"
"Don't squirm."

With that, you take off back toward the castle.

--

The castle seems to be organizing much more competently since the last time you saw it. Guards are lined up in front in perfect formation, and you don't see any VIPs wandering about like last time.

Good, it's good to see that when push comes to shove, Tuile can be an effective leader.

"Let me down!"
"No." You state plainly to white hair boy on your shoulders.

You land in the castle entrance as most of the line of guards jump at your presence. They calm down and usher you through the gate.

That's when you choose to set the white-haired boy down.

"Alright, new rule for ye. Don't leave the castle unless I'm with ye."

"Wait, What!? Why?"
"Because Biscotti is made mostly of forest, ye dun need to be gettin' lost at a time like this."
"Come on, Jack. It's just that one time! I can manage! Really!"

>Somehow aye dun believe ye.
>No buts, yer grounded.
>Stay in the guest room for the rest of the day.
>Alright fine, ye can tag along.
>But don't get too far away.

"Somehow." You regard him with cynicism, "I dun' believe ye."

"Why!?"

"Look." You kneel down to about his eye level. "Aye need help right now. Things are fallin' apart and the castle ain't safe. Cody and I seem to be the only two who can deal with this. Can ye please watch the castle for us while we handle this?"

He still seems upset. Like that answer wasn't good enough for him.
Dorje sighs, and shrugs.
"Okay, fine. Just to be clear, this isn't because of the forest thing, right?"
"Right. This is because the castle needs defending."

"That's right." You pat his shoulder. "Now go check and make sure no one has carried the maids out of here when aye wasn't lookin'."

He nods and runs toward the library. Maybe you're not as bad with kids as you thought you were.

Meanwhile, you have something to attend to.
You open the armory doors, and are met face-to-face with-

Yuuki!

"Yuuki! Yer hard to keep down!"
"Uh, Jack!?" She spins around to face you. "Good to see you, but-"

In front of her, on the table, Kayda is fast asleep.
There appears to be a tiny marking on her forehead, and it's glowing.

Aligot stands before the table, with a book opened in his hand. He closes it as you enter.

"Looking for Fritelli? She went upstairs with Cody to find Tuile." Aligot acts like this scene is the most normal thing you could have ever walked in on.

>Excuse me fer askin, What's happenin' here!?
>Somethin' wrong with Kayda?
>What's that thing on her head?
>And you, Yuuki, where did ye come from?
>Ye hurt?
>Thanks we can talk later
>Go find Tuile and Cody.

I think we've slowed down to the point where next post will be the last for this thread. I need to prepare for CPM anyway.

Leaving vote open for a few more minutes. Apologies with how slow this thread had gone.

"Excuse me fer askin'." This scene is just too weird for you. "What's happenin' here?"
"Well, it's a long story." Yuuki seems defensive.

"Try not to speak too loud, Kayda needs to sleep for a while to get over it." Aligot speaks just above his voice.
"Aye, 'get over it'? Somethin' wrong with Kayda?"

"No, no, Jack. Let's talk about this outside." Yuuki seems secretive for some reason.
"I got a place for her to stay in the library, but I don't want anyone seeing her. No one needs to know that we're short a hero." Aligot motions to you. "Can you give me a hand?"

"Aye."

You wrap a fuzzy dog-emblem blanket around Kayda and lift her into your hands. Aligot motions a path for you as you wind through the hallways and through the chaos of the afternoon rush.
He takes you to the back of the library and ushers you to the back room. Some strange looks from the academics are quickly muffled as your eyes meet their stares.

You take Kayda to another one of Aligot's hidden safe rooms and set her on a bed hidden within the wall.

You unwrap the blanket from her face and walk out of the room, shutting the door behind you.

Leaving you with just Yuuki, and Aligot.

"So." Aligot and Yuuki seem uncomfortable now that they have to answer your questions. "Aye like to know what happened."

Aligot points to Yuuki's forehead, and she pulls her hairline back.
"Up here." There's still a black smear of ash. "Yuuki got involved with a charm."

That wording confuses you.
"A charm? Was he a handsome lad?" You smile.
Yuuki blushes, and frowns.

"Not that kind, Jack." Aligot adjusts his voice. "Charm magic. It's a very specialized kind of magic here meant for remedies. How it works is that both the caster and the recipient have to agree to it. It's like a contract, and that's how the recipient gets 'charmed'. The one Yuuki had was for sleep."

"Ye had to agree-" You think about that for just a moment. "Yuuki, what did ye do to agree to it?"
"Well, Um.-" She blushes. "I didn't know! There was this nice old lady on the side of the road, and she was selling some good-luck charms, and-"

"Ugh, Lass." You sigh. "Never take deals from creepy old women. Anyway, that doesn't explain why Kayda looks that way, how did she get charmed?"
"Well, charms go away after a couple hours, but you can have someone substitute the remainder of the time. Kayda volunteered to because she thought Yuuki would be more useful in your investigation."

"Jack, I'm certain she saved my life." Yuuki grabs your hands. "I don't know how she did it, or even who took me, but I just know deep down that she rescued me. And- I'm sorry. I'm sorry for getting caught."

"Yuuki, as long as yer fine, I'm fine."
"More importantly." Aligot interrupts. "She got the person who kidnapped you. Would you like to meet him?"

You can't see it, but you can feel a smile slowly carve its way onto Yuuki's face.
The same smile is making itself known on yours.

"Absolutely." Both of you say in unison.

Thanks for the thread everyone, I'm sorry that this morning was so slow. I'm having to deal with a lot of things I wanted to get done now that it's the weekend and all.

But hey, we broke 100 posts and had over 16 story posts. So it's not all bad. Maybe we should just make a habit of going overnight and into the morning. I think I could manage it.

This might be the style that I've been needing to do all along.

Thanks for the thread everyone, and let me know what you thought of today's and yesterday's thread.
