The Security Council’s ultimatum only served to intensify the fighting in the desert. Massive offensives were launched by the militaries of Anuncia, Droiqubar and N.O.R.D in the hopes of gaining ground as quickly as possible. The war for resources began to turn into something more desperate. Less aggressive nations fortified their defences and prepared to hold out, hoping that the I.F. deadline would end the fighting. Pundits and think tanks debated and speculated as to what it all meant. Did the aggressors have some kind of unspoken agreement to crave up the desert along the battle lines before the deadline hit? But surely the nations who did not benefit from such an agreement would force the Peace Keeper’s hands rather than allow their enemies to gain territory so close to their borders.

The mercenaries of the desert didn’t think too hard about it at the time, to them war was a business and in the Great Interior Desert; business was good…

((Welcome to the Mecha Mercs Skirmish Campaign.

This is a tactical turn based collective game where each player takes on the role of a mech pilot. As the campaign progresses the players will accumulate a supply of resources which can be used to build up a persistent pool of mechs and equipment, but watch out! If your pilot dies you could lose it all and be forced to start again with an inferior mech.

Right now sign ups are currently closed. All existing players who wish to participate in the mission please answer the roll call and post your builds. If you don't catch the start of the game don't worry, it moves a lot more slowly now and you can deploy mid-mission.

Briefing:

Cable Guy: “Alright, settle down. There’s a lot to go over so pay attention. The Droiqubaran military has launched a massive offensive across the south of desert. Qadrus isn’t about to let the Droiqs march right up to their borders so they’ve set up a defence line to repel the assault in this region. Unfortunately they their military just doesn’t have as much manpower as the Droiqs and so their forces are stretched thin. That’s where we come in. We are to deploy alongside Qadrussi Army units in our designated area and hold the line. Our primary objective is to protect their mobile command truck. If this gets taken out their forces in the area will be unable to co-ordinate effectively and be forced to withdraw.

The Qadrussians have set up defensive position along a line of sand dunes. MBTs are holding the choke points while infantry have dug in along the crest of the dune. This formation is supported by a pair of crew served howitzers.

The Intel department have been gathering information on the enemy force and it isn’t pretty. The vanguard is made up three squads of mecha. Two of these squads are assault squads which are made up of two Komodo class mecha and a Stratus missile carrier. The Komodos are meant to advance and soak up enemy fire while the Stratus moves to engage key targets. Be wary: These squads are made up of veteran pilots. All those fancy moves you guys have been learning from the Chief, they likely know a few as well. The assault squads are backed up by a support squad consisting of two mortar Cobras and an Alligator equipped for spotting. I don’t need to tell you that being on the receiving end of the same blast weapons you like so much is not fun.

As if that wasn’t enough the mecha are backed up by a platoon of MBTs and a squadron of attack choppers which includes a heavy VTOL. They’ll arrive shortly after the mecha in order to mop up any resistance. This assumes that the defences have already been broken. You’re not gonna let that happen.

Of course the mecha are being backed up by type 1 assault servers. The veterans among you will remember how to deal with these things. Remember: it is not necessary to destroy them. Doing so will put a serious dent in the enemy mecha’s capabilities and you can be sure that attacking them will draw attention away from the Qadrussian line, but it may be a better use of firepower to simply take out the mecha themselves.

In terms of terrain it’s mostly sand dunes and open desert. At their highest point the dunes will block line of sight which means that the Droiqs will have to march over them in order to attack the command truck. Mecha part way up the dunes can draw line of sight to units on the other side at the same height level but will be obscured by the dune itself. There are also some rocky areas to the sides of the AO. These block movement and line of sight, but can be traversed with jump jets.

The command staff will probably want to set up a repair station in the field. There are several possible locations we can put it behind the lines, or we can deploy it front and centre which provides easier access but also exposes it to enemy fire. Pilots can choose to deploy in the middle of the AO, to the left or to the right. Please make your choice known to the transport crews before you depart or you will be dumped in the middle.

That's all folks, get your mecha prepped and make sure you're at the appropriate staging area before we move out."

Thanks Chief, your experience is very helpful. In this case it really depends what support assests (artillery, pioneer team etc) we have to protect, and what the Droiqubarian objectives are. If they want to push us back and claim ground (as we beleive they do) they must come to us and engage, allowing us to choose the nature of the battlefield. But if we concentrate to much, they could just bypass us entirely and push into Qadrussian territory.

Then again, that's all really more of a question for Qadrusian high command to deal with: they've paid for our forces to defend this area, so they must beleive that the Droiqubari army will attempt to remove us.

As far as a refused flank goes, the plan of a tight defensive anvil paired with an invisible hammer lurking nearby is a solid one. Once our defensive line has entangled the majority of the enemy forces, the stealth squad can then either move in to get rear shots on the elite mechs, or assault any vulnerable supporting elements (artillery, AA batteries etc).

The Defence group is looking pretty good. The sea of overlapping firepower they can put out should put the fear into any advancing force (though the lack of Mortars does make me sad). The Interceptors can then apply force wherever the enemy decides to focus. Some more Adaptive Camo armour and/or a third Tactical Shield would certainly improve things, but you seem to have a very functional set up as it stands.

The Flanker group on the other hand is rather light in numbers, being constrained by the necessity of Knight-lite stealth armour. We also haven't had much time to train with the new systems, and are still getting used to the tactics involved in actively avoiding a straight fight. I'd have fewer missgivings generally if the flankers were tougher, or had a fifth member. The most glaring hole is the lack of an Errant Scrambler Field, since a defense bonus for the entire squad would really go a long way. Either myself, Alice or Hetros can carry one, and I beleive Hetros even has 2 Torso slots free. The issue, as always, is scrounging the 6 Cred.

An important point: Gasolina is yet to spend any of their Cred from the previous mission, so could fit either group. They vanished shortly after mission-end last time: I'm not sure where they've gone, but they're probably living-it-large in the nearest town with a bar.

The Chief also tells me the following pilots are yet to report for free/complimentary/compulsory training (or if they have, they haven't told anyone about it):

Finally, everyone should bear in mind: this is a meatgrinder. The enemy WILL have reserves, and will not hesitate to commit them. Preserve your mechs and spend ammo wisely. Putting yourself in danger to get a killshot is generally not advised: the enemy will have more tanks and mechs, but we don't have any more of you guys. Stay in cover, watch each other's backs, and listen to Spare and Hetros.

Cloak squad is taking the brunt of this.

Hammer Squad, we need you guys in the center to keep our skies clear alright? You got the missiles and a ridiculous radar range. Use it.

Dagger Squad, I want you guys to HOLD OFF for the first offensive, just let them walk into your overwatch range got it? We need you guys to ride to the rescue if things get hairy got it? and I don't want you so far forward you can't react to the changing battlefield.

It is VITAL, even if you FINISH OFFthe eastern assault, that you DO NOT try to finish off the server farm there. Let Cloak squad handle it. We're going to come out bloodied from this probably, so we have to leave something in reserve, got it?

Malek? Leave some mines behind us just in case okay?

We're going to slip past their first offensive, then hit them from behind as they walk past us, light them up, recloak, go after the first server farm or blow it to hell.

If you don't OBLITERATE the enemy? Don't worry about it.

Just make sure they are bloodied enough that if they keep moving forward, they'll be fucked to hell by the infantry and tanks.

The only exception are units with an effective range larger than our allies.

Cobras for example, wreck'em.

The only things that must die are things with missiles, things with artillery, and the mobile server farms.

Reminding you of the plan.

We are expecting multiple waves. What we see now is a vanguard, probably a thunder run. I doubt it is their main offensive.

You guys are to hold the Eastern flank for the time being. Cloak Squad is deploying to the Western Flank, and from there we will be sweeping up, and around, capping each server and the support team, hopefully we can bloody the western assault team if not outright destroy them as well.

I know that you guys are melee focused. And this is a lot to ask, but I need you guys to HOLD BACK and let the enemy come to you, and then HAMMER them.

If the second wave doesn't show any signs of showing up, or Cloak Squad bogs down, you are to make a quick foray to SMASH the western server, and then fall back IMMEDIATELY. Do not pursue the center mobile server and support squad.

Cloak squad is leaving a deliberate hole in our lines, and the reason is this. We want the enemy to see it, and run for it. When they deploy, you will rush them and strike them from the side, while Cloak Squad repairs and holds the Western Flank following that.

We get paid for the job being completed, not for our kill score. This isn't Mecha-rena. If you guys get to sit out this entire thing without so much as firing a shot? Then think of it as getting paid for watching a military flick without any real danger.

Just remember, we need you guys to hold out for the second, even third waves. Leave this first wave to us primarily.

I should mention something guys.

Given this strategy we expect them to be coming in with, it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that if, with our superior numbers, we were to blitz, and destroy, the enemy, that they'd fall back, they wouldn't deploy their infantry, tanks, and air support.

The cloak then dagger approach exists purely for one reason.

Quadrus probably can't afford for those guys to hit them along another front.

We're going to turn this meat grinder into a fucking kill box. We bloody them badly, but not so badly that we scare them off. Then they come in with the other forces, and we mop them up when they try to mop us up.

Every other enemy in that area is defeated by the other Camels - that's why you'd be clear to charge with little repurcussion save whatever armament a single komodo can bring to bear; most of which will be blunted by your shield. You know what you're doing, though so anyway, if you pull back to the central area and the two vehicles with the 4 struts around them they'll try to patch your mech together. It'll take a while though, so you'll be out of the action for a significant bit.
