Well, it looks like it's time for our little President's Day bonus thread!

You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Currently, you were heading full steam for the naval base on San Clemente island, just off the coast of San Diego and under siege by an Abyssal attack wave. From you know, Abyssals have already made landfall on the island and were assaulting the base from both the sea and land. Heerman and Sam were there trying to hold them off, but the base's defenses were crumbling fast, threatening the evacuation of the remaining personnel and "sensitive materials".

Meanwhile, you were leading three other Fletchers: Luce, Wren, and Daly, to hit the Abyssals from the south to try and draw some heat off the base. From what you can see, there were numerous Abyssal destroyers and landing ships in your way. No sign of the larger classes, but that didn't mean they weren't here.

In the distance, you could see the twin silhouettes of a pair of Warthogs they continually made attack runs on the Abyssals attempting to encircle the base, guns and rocket pods blazing.

Now it was time for you to do your part.

>Just drive straight through the Abyssals to link up with Sam and Heerman.

It's Samar in reverse - so do it right this time. Line astern, punch through the center of the abyssal landing group and fire every torpedo you have in sequence. They can't fire back without risking catching their own ships in the crossfire, and they sure as hell can use torpedoes. Concentrate fire in the landing ships, then book it to Sammy and Heerman while making smoke to cover your withdrawal.
>>
>>45447632
That should bet he Abyssals *can't* use torpedoes if that wasn't obvious.

"All right girls," You call out to your fellow Fletcher girls behind you. "Stick close! There's going to be a lot of targets so we don't want to be hitting each other!"

"R-right!" Luce nods. The pause her voice tells you that she's slightly intimidated by the sheer number of Abyssals she's seeing both visually and on radar. "L-line astern, everybody!"

"Don't worry." You say reassuringly. "A lot of those contacts are just unarmed transports. It's not as bad as it looks."

You hope.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVK17-1AeQA

The Abyssals serving as the pickets are slow to react, possibly not expecting an attack from this angle. Your radar fire directors cue your aim in on the nearest destroyer, three direct hits blasting in the side and cracking it in half like a spoiled egg, oilblood gushing from its ruined carapace. However, you don't stop or slow down at all, speeding right through the hole you've just opened up. Luce and the others follow your lead and start firing their own 5 inch cannons at anything in sight. This close in, and with their radars, there was no way they could miss. More Abyssal pickets were blown to pieces, or sent scurrying away for safety, completely breaking up their once tight formation.

(cont)
>>
>>45447915
Deeper in, the rest of the Abyssals were just as confused, flopping and thrashing as they tried to intercept you and find a suitable angle to fire. You make it much harder for them by weaving in around the many transport ships slowly lumbering their way to shore. They were big, bulbous, and ugly, and greatly resembled the Wa-class Abyssals you had encountered before.

"W-why aren't they firing on us?" Daly blinks, her cannons still blazing furiously in the target rich environment.

"They can't! They'd hit their own transports!" It finally dawns upon Luce. "You're amazing, Hoel!"

"Haha, well, it's standard tactics!" You chuckle at the compliment, when your radar pings with a BIG return.

Up front, you can see a huge cluster of about a dozen Wa-class transports, slowly steaming their way to shore. Your torpedo launcher twitches in anticipation, hungry for action. While you cannot deny it was a really juicy target, there was still the possibility that you could run into heavier ships.

The Fletcher's have quintuple launchers, we can fire torpedoes and still have plenty in reserve. Also, unlike IJN ships (which avoid reloads because oxygen torps tend to explode when hit - that's how White Plains won her gun duel), they usually carry reloads. So fire one in every two tubes, or two in every three. In this close they can't maneuver so you don't need to bracket them will a full spread. That will leave some tubes loaded as a reserve while you reload the others.

"All right girls" You call out to Luce, Wren, and Daly. "I'm going to break left, that's going to bring us parallel with that transport formation there! When you have the shot, fire off a couple of torpedoes!"

"Roger!" You hear the other Fletchers respond.

Up ahead, the Was don't seem to be particularly concerned about your presence, or maybe they just plain were not aware of the danger they were in. After all, last time you had encountered one, it didn't really exhibit that much intelligence at all. However, a couple of destroyers try to move in to shield them, but a few 5 inch rounds easily knock them out.

"NOW!" You yell. Your torpedo launcher jerks and shakes as a pair of torpedoes are ejected and splash down in the water. You immediately break to the left, giving Luce an opportunity to fire before breaking left to give Wren and Daly their shots. Eight torpedoes streak in, two being wasted by detonating on the already slain carcasses of the escort destroyers, but the remaining six find their mark. The Wa transports groan in pain as your torpedoes pop their bulbous bodies like balloon, throwing oilblood, debris, and bodyparts in all directions. Luce and Wren's torpedoes find their marks as well, hitting transports and causing massive secondary explosions as stored munitions are set off and oilblood ignites. Daly, who's last in line, only manages a partial hit on the trailing Wa, hitting its engine and setting it alight. You see its fat belly distort and crawl before tearing open as its cargo, a swarm a of freakish crab-like creatures, pour out like spiders breaking free from an egg sac, leaping into the ocean in an attempt to escape the fire.

>Also, unlike IJN ships (which avoid reloads because oxygen torps tend to explode when hit - that's how White Plains won her gun duel), they usually carry reloads.
Er, that's the exact *opposite* of how it worked, historically.

Japanese Destroyers were notorious for carrying reloads of their Type 90s and type 93s so as to increase their effective firepower as much as possible, with much of their Destroyer tactics being based around launching a spread, disengaging, and then reloading and launching *another* spread. Hara talks about using that tactic in the Solomons and Guadalcanal at length.

US Destroyers traditionally *didn't* carry reloads, instead preferring to use that extra weight and deckspace on AA guns and larger physical launchers, and in general making the ship not as shit to exist on.

"Girls, lay smoke and we'll keep moving north!" You bark.

"But we've still got targets-" Wren protests.

"Sh! Hoel must have a reason!" Luce responds.

"We did our damage. We still have the base to worry about." You explain. "Now lay that smoke!"

The Fletchers nod as their smokestacks start expelling thick white smoke behind them. You do so to. You remember from one of the Captain's lectures that most Abyssals didn't have radar like you, and were purely reliant on optical tracking, though it was theorized by Shen and Vahlen that the more advanced types like the humanoid ones were equipped with it. You weren't sure yourself, but you weren't about to take chances.

And it seems you moved out the nick of time. Your radar pings with a large and fast contact suddenly appear from the open ocean, making a beeline for the stricken transport convoy. You turn to see the Fletchers nervously looking at each other, no doubt having seen the mystery contact on their own radars. Looks like you dodged a bullet of some sort there.

Up ahead were more destroyer types, though their attention was not turned to you. Up above, the A-10s were still performing strafing runs. Their rockets and missiles long expended, they were not resorting to using their cannons, sending down a torrent of 30mm shells tearing through the Abyssal formations. The lead A-10 swoops down first, its cannon roaring as curtains of water shoot up from the shell impacts. Abyssal armor cracks and shatters under the assault, their relatively thin armor no match for the A-10's tankbusting gun.

>>
>>45449151
>I assumed that our USN shipgirls would be carrying reloads.
It's not really that simple. Generally, the ships have to be designed from the start to do it, as reloading the torp tubes at sea required a bit of dedicated equipment, and that's without even getting into the topweight and deckspace issues of torp reloads - late war Japanese DDs had to omit some of their reloads due to the sheer weight issues they caused.

And given how utterly packed tot he gulls with Gun, AA and Torp the Fletchers already were, there's not realistically enough space or spare displacement to provide even one or two spare torpedoes. Certainly not without a ground-up rebuild in a major shipyard.

However, as the trailing A-10 comes in for its own strafing run, you notice something wrong. The destroyers turn their attention, and their guns, to the sky, and begin firing wildly. Thick clouds of flak start exploding around the diving attack plane with frightening accuracy for optically guided guns. Were they starting to learn its attack patterns?

The A-10, now under fire, quickly pulls away, but you could see it leaking thick black smoke as flak explosions continue to chase it through the sky.

"Mayday mayday! This is Viper 2! I've taken damage and am losing altitude!" You hear the panicked pilot cry.

"W-we have to do something!" Luce cries.

"Hoel, where are you!?" Heerman's voice crackles over the radio, her voice distorted by explosions and cannon fire. "We're getting our backs pushed to the shore here!"

Damnit, you couldn't just leave a pilot hanging. Half your damn job was rescuing them, after all!

"Luce, take the others and keep heading north till you reach the base! Find Heerman!" You order. "And don't stop for anything!"

"But-" Luce starts.

"Just go!" You bark.

Luce, Wren, and Daly wordlessly speed off to the north while you break off to trail the damaged A-10. You could see it struggling to gain altitude, but with its damaged engines, it was having trouble just staying in the air. The Abyssal destroyers in the water continue to hound it, lobbing flak shells into the sky with reckless abandon. Its companion A-10, Viper 1, does what it can to relieve the pressure, but his attack runs were limited by the fact that he was trying to avoid a face full of flak as well.

"Viper 2, this is Hoel, do you read?" You call out over the radio.

"Viper 2, I read you!" The pilot responds, trying to keep the panic out of his voice. "Sure is nice to hear a friendly voice!"

"What's your condition? Can you get back to shore?" You ask as you blast a pair of destroyers whose backs were unwisely turned to you.

"I think so, if you can get those bastards to quit shooting me up with flak!" Viper 2 grunts as his craft is rocked with more explosions.

That was a tall order, considering the number of Abyssals both under him and in his path. You could probably ask him to bail out, but then he'd be a sitting duck in an ocean of Abyssal sharks, which meant you'd have to babysit him all the way back to base...

Okay, back in an are j know sketching about. A-10s can fly crazy close to the ground or water and stall out at a ridiculously slow speed - so have him hit the deck - those old school flack guns shouldn't be able to depress enough to hit him and even if they could altitude fused flack shells don't work horizontally iirc. Also, given that the A-10 has actual armor, is not have the pilot bail unless we have to - he's much safer in the bathtub that under a chute. A-10a can fly with half a wing and half a tail gone, and with only one engine - he should be fine.

From what you remember, A-10s were built quite a lot like the planes from your era. Heavy and with lots of armor. As long as he could avoid the worst of the flak, he should have a good chance of making it back to shore. All he had to do was get past the island.

"All right, Viper 2, listen up. Get as low as you possibly can." You instruct. "They can't adjust their flak to work point blank."

"R-roger." Viper 2 gulps.

"Viper 1, can you assist?" You ask.

"Sorry, I'm completely out." Viper 1 says, his own A-10 orbiting helplessly. "I can do a few dry runs to draw their fire, but that's it."

The newcomer might be providing radar guidance - that would explain why their accuracy went from crap to not crawl so quickly. As the orbiting A-10 to hold position, but have him and our wounded bird switch on their jamming pods. Jammers are standard A-10 load out, but I doubt they even had them on since they weren't going up against radar at the time. Worth a shot and doesn't cost us anything.

If we get in a pickle A-10s usually carry to AAMs for self-defense. Turn the guidance off and they become straight firing rockets. The warheads won't do crap, but they could make the Abysalls flinch if we need to buy a couple of seconds at some point.

Hahahaha! Really? Because I have a crapload of guys from Iraq, Afganistan, and the fight against ISIS who will tell you that A-10s and our myriad of AC-130s are the only reason they're still alive. Sure, the A-10 is useless against tanks built after the 1960s, but it does truly awful things to people and light vehicles.
>>
>>45450096
That slow stall speed and long loiter time are a big deal. Plenty of other aircraft an carry the weapons, but being able to take your time makes a big difference in danger close situations.

Right now air support is all we're really doing on a broad scale against ISIS - the locals are doing the dirty work. And they certainly like having our planes around.

But hey, if you can do better you're more than welcome to enlist. It wouldn't be the first time we screwed something up and needed the FNGs to sort us out. But more often than not its the other way around...

"No need to risk yourself like that, we can handle things here." You assure him.

"Roger that." Viper 1 says as his A-10 waves off. Better that he get his craft rearmed and refueled so it can get back into the fight as soon as possible rather than loiter here uselessly.

"All right, Viper 2, keep heading east. I'll draw enemy fire away from you." You say as you swing your course west, towards the thickest concentration of Abyssals.

"Roger that. Thanks, Hoel." Viper 2 says as his A-10 vectors toward you.

You make sure your 5 inchers are loaded and ready to fire as you take aim at the approaching destroyers...

>FATE POINT GAINED
>You currently have 1 point!

The Abyssals don't even notice your approach, too focused on shooting down Viper 2 to pay attention to you. You suppose that even when being so damn smart, they're still hopelessly dumb. You swing in, your 5 inchers swiveling rapidly as they engage, drilling shells into each and every destroyer that falls into their sights. Oilblood soaks the sea as Abyssal carcasses pile up. The flak in the sky begins to clear up as you thin out the destroyer herd, and finally, Viper 2's plane roars over your head, blowing your hair around in a mess from the hot jet wash.

"Thanks a lot, Hoel!" Viper 2 says, relieved. "I think I can make it back from here!"

"Glad to hear!" You grin, and then flinch as your doused with a splash of water. With Viper 2 safely out of range, the Abyssals were starting to switch their attention to you. You immediately pull a full turn and steam north at full speed, trying to outrun their shelling. As much as you wanted to tangle, you were all on your own and you had better things to do than dealing with small fry.

Fortunately, the Abyssals don't pursue you, instead opting to head back south towards the convoy you trashed, and where you saw that mystery contact. Another squadron or fleet leader? The plot thickened.

Anyways, you were now coming up to the base, which was in a shambles. So close to the shore, there was no way even the best coastal defense could stop the shelling. You could see the runway was badly cratered. Hangars and other buildings had huge chunks blown out or had simply collapsed. You could even see the burning hulks of a few planes that had attempted to escape the assault. Even now, the familiar crab-like Abyssal ground assault strains were pushing against what was left of the perimeter, a barebones rearguard waiting for the final ticket off the island to be loaded.

The shore wasn't much better, you could see Heerman, almost dead on her feet. Her uniform was burnt, frayed, and tattered, while her rig was sporting scorch marks, dents, and even a few spots where shells had penetrated and gone clean through. Luce, Wren, and Daly were also present, though they were far more intact but looking just as exhausted as your sister. All around, the ocean was stained black with oilblood. Abyssal carcasses, both monstrous and humanoid, lay all over, floating in the water or washed up on the shore like beached whales. Whatever battle had happened here must have been vicious.

But you notice one thing missing.

"Heerman!" You yelp as you steam up to her. "Where did Sam go?"

"Crazy bitch..." Heerman wheezes, still trying to catch her breath and just wordlessly points to an ugly bubble of black smoke hanging over the water. "She went off into that."

"We couldn't keep up with her!" Luce pants, bent over on her knees as beads of sweat fall from her brow like leaking oil. "She was like a force of nature! Just told us to withdraw without her!"

"Girls, we need to go, NOW!" You see one of the base personnel on the shore yell at you and point to a waiting Chinook on the tarmac. You could already see the last of the rearguard making the final sprint to it as a pair of Cobra attack helicopters covered their retreat. "You either go or stay! We need to take off!"

Heerman definitely was in no shape to keep fighting. Luce, Wren and Daly looked to still have some juice left, they just needed a breather. You obviously were still in fairly good condition.

You gaze at the ominous fog, wondering what to do.

Ah screw it, be a Hero, and charge in alone!!!

"Luce." You say to the Fletcher calmly and quietly. "I need you and your sisters to take Heerman and get her to that helicopter."

"And what are you going to do?" Wren blinks.

"You're going after her, aren't you?" Luce says, slightly crestfallen. She always seemed to be the sharpest of the trio.

"It's something I gotta do." You nod. "I know Heerman's gonna have none of it, which is why I need you three to hold her back. Nothing less is gonna stop her."

"So cool...." Luce breathes before regaining her focus and saluting. "You got it, Hoel! Good luck!"

"Yeah, just remember what I taught ya, okay kid?" You wink.

"We won't!" The three Fletchers chime.

"Heerman, I'll see ya soon." You wave to her as you steam towards the black fog.

"Wait, what are you-" Heerman starts right when Luce, Wren, and Daly pounce, with Luce grabbing her waise and Wren and Daly taking an arm reach. "No! Don't! You can't go alone!"

"Sorry sis, can't leave a ship behind." You smile sadly as you steam off to the cloud, trying to ignore Heerman's cries. You're only partially successful.

"HOEL!" You hear Heerman's pained voice cr over the radio before it fizzles into static, coinciding with the moment you enter the fog.

It looks like you well and truly were on your own...

>FATE POINT USED
>No points remain!

You carefully steam through the fog, your visibility falling to zero. You try probing the area with your radar, but you don’t get any returns. This was not normal fog, that you were sure of. However, you had no choice but to press forward on your mission to find Sam, and you quickly find a clue.

All of the bodies. Corpses of Abyssals choked the surface of the water, like leaves on a pond. What as even more distressing was most of the Abyssals didn't even look like they were felled by cannon fire or even torpedoes. It looked like they were smashed to pieces, by some kind of large, blunt weapon. It was damage that made even you bat seem like a toothpick in comparison.

And you hear it. A loud clanging sound echoing through the silence. Metal against metal. Now with a point of reference, you quickly speed toward it, wondering what you'll see...

...and what you see is not pretty.
The fog clears up, and you see Sam clashing with a humanoid Abyssal. A type you've never seen before. She was mostly humanoid, but her legs ended in a massive, black machine skull that seemed to dominate the Abyssal visual design, with the large grinning teeth, and massive, pale white arms protruding from it. You can.. you can FEEL the power rolling off it. Like some sort of aura that choked you senses. Whatever this was, it wasn't like any previous Abyssal you faced. It was like some kind of demon. However, it looked all kinds of fucked up. There were deep dents in the Abyssal girl's hull. One of the arms protruding from the hull was clearly broken, snapped at an odd angle. The lone gun mounted on her back was bent out of shape, completely useless, while the main body itself was bloodied and bruised, its clothes torn and shredded. It looked tired, but you could see the pure RAGE on its face as it focused on Sam.

Sam was not in any better condition. Her Rig was practically nonexistent. Shot and shredded to pieces to the point where it was almost literally dangling off Sam's back like a thread. Like the Abyssal, Sam's weapons were nonfunctional, but she was wielding a massive ship's anchor like a battle axe, slung over her right shoulder on the account of her left arm looking mangled and limp. Her clothes likewise were shredded and stained with blood. But like the Abyssal, Sam wasn't showing any signs of fatigue or fear.

No... that smile plastered on her face suggested she was having the time of her life. She was not herself. Something was wrong...

But even in that damaged state, you weren't sure if you could defeat this Abyssal. That growing pit in your stomach was telling you it was beyond anything you have faced before.

"Damnit!" You grit you teeth as you steam forward. Whatever was happening here, you had to prioritize Sam's safety here, because it sure as shit was obvious she wasn't. You speed in, hoping to god that Abyssal demon thing wouldn't notice you. Indeed, it focuses all of it attacks on Sam, unleashing a flurry of orb-like aircraft, each one with a toothy skull grin as they homed in on their target. However, Sam was having none of that, using her anchor as an impromptu shield to ward off the worst of their cannon and bomb attacks, and then swinging it to knock more than a few of the little aircraft out of the air. Impressive, considering the anchor was practically larger than her and she was wielding it with only a single arm.

You see a couple of aircraft speeding in on her left flank, where she was the most vulnerable. One quick motion, and you pull your bat from your Rig-mounted holster and knock them out of the way, sending the fighters spinning into the water with a loud splash. You don't want to risk giving yourself away by firing your cannon.

"BRING IT, BITCH." Sam roars with anticipation as her ruined boilers tried to fire up. However, she doesn't anticipate you blindsiding her, swooping her up and hauling her over your shoulder like a big of wheat in one smooth ocean. "HEY WHAT THE FUCK."

"YOU'LL THANK ME FOR THIS LATER!" You yell to Sam as you try to speed out of the fog as fast as humanly possible. You start dropping depth charges behind you to try and discourage pursuit, but you get the feeling that it's not work as your radar pings more and more rapidly...

Battlefield then?
If they do make a Battlefield version of Kancolle will we be able to explode [BB]'s into the air to use a AAA?

Maybe if the netcode for Battlefield was better.

The only other alternative would be those mods for Insurgency, but that's just sounds for the guns. No player models yet.

You try to steam forward as quick as you can but the cursing and struggling Sam over your shoulder was definitely not helping. You try to zigzag as much as your added weight allows you, and you can just see daylight...

However, the shriek of aircraft lets you know that you've not going to shake off the pursuit so easily. With the fog mucking up your radar, your Rig-mounted turret can't really do much against the Abyssal fighters you know are behind you. All you can do is hope-

And that's when you feel the water rising and bubbling just below you. You realize too late that it was a bomb that had just been dropped, splashing into the water right behind you before exploding and sending you flying and tumbling through the water.

"Ah, fuck fuck FUCK!" You curse as you try to scramble back to your feet and get yourself upright. Sam lies just a few meters away from you, barely being able to support herself with her one good arm.

The Abyssal fighters orbit above you like vultures, their teeth chatter wildly as if they were laughing at you. You briefly wonder why they're not attack, until you realize. SHE wanted to deal the finishing blow herself.

The fog parts and dissipates as the Abyssal demon limps forward on damaged screws. With a smug smirk, her eyes scan both you and Sam. She pauses when she sees you. You try to raise your cannon, but a swift backhand sends you flying another dozen meters. You again try to scramble to you feet when you see the demon grabbing Sam by the throat.

No, no. It can't end like this. Not like last time-

You faerie crew, at first they were hesitant at following your orders, but upon seeing your determination, they feel that they have no choice. All throughout your rig, your fairies make the preparations, closing off safety valves, pumping more fuel into the engines, increasing boiler pressure. You boilers, the very heart of your Rig, are pushed past their physical limits, into redline territory.

In concert with this, your heart begins beating faster. Faster than it's ever been. It feels like you entire body is being crushed as blood vessels constrict, increasing your blood pressure beyond normal limits. Adrenaline sluices through your veins like oil and your vision goes red.

You don't see what happens next. One moment, you're about thirty meters away from the Abyssal Demon. The next, you're mounting the top of the Demon's own Rig. Your turrets were gone. You weren't sure where they went. Your bat was likewise gone, discarded at some point in your redline-induced rage. Your fingers were bloodied and broken from repeated punches to the Demon's porcelain face. Unable to even form a fist anymore, you reach back to your depth charge dispensers, grab one of the explosives, and smash it into the Abyssal's face like a shot glass.

Another flash. You find yourself lying in next to Sam, in a puddle of oil and blood. You're not sure it's yours, Sam's, or the Abyssals, but it's fucking everywhere. You try to stand, but can't find the strength. Your faeries had finally lost their nerve and quenched your boilers. This wasn't like that ill-fated demonstration that felt so long ago. If they had blown in this condition, you're pretty sure you would've sunk outright.

Fucking cowards.

"No, NO! DON'T DO THIS ME NOW!" You screech at the little traitors. "I WAS SO CLOSE!"

Your faeries frantically to the sky, but your eyes are focused on the Demon. Bloodied and broken, but not beaten, she grins an evil grin as her aircraft form around her, ready to strike-

Until she's racked with explosions and cannon fire. The Demon shrieks as squadrons of planes dive from the sky, unleashing bombs, rockets, and heavy 20mm cannon fire. The fighters screening her attempt to counterattack, but are shot down in quick succession by a type of aircraft you've never seen before. Jet powered, swept back wings, but nothing like the modern planes you've seen.

The Demon shrieks at these newcomers, but being in no state to fight a fresh opponent, decides to withdraw, turning around and speeding away back into the fog.

"Oh dear, are you all right?" You hear a calm, collected voice ask. You crane your head back to see the silhouette a shipgirl against the bright daytime sun, the shadow obscuring any particular features, but you could see the signature carrier flight deck mounted her back.

"Who the fuck said you could barge in like that?!" You snap.

"Oh my, I'm sorry, it just looked like you were in a bit of a pickle!" The carrier shipgirl says with some amusement. "Ah, I guess the stories of destroyers having the loosest lips is quite true!"

The carrier shipgirl's good humored response catches you off guard, and with the adrenaline high starting to peter out, you feel a bit regretful for what you just said.

"Um... thanks for the save there." You say bashfully.

"Oh, any shipgirl would have done the same!" The carrier shipgirl says cheerfully as she pulls you up to your feet. You legs are wobbly and shaky, barely able to support your weight. With your boilers quenched, you don't really have the power to move anywhere, either. However, the carrier girl is easily able to support you with on arm, and in the other, she's holding Sam secure and tight.

"Hoel and Samuel B. Roberts, right?" The carrier smiles, her long brown hair and brown eyes seemingly shining in the sunlight. "You probably might not know me, since I"m a bit after your time, but I've heard all the stories about you!"

"You're Midway, aren't you?" You wheeze.

"Oh my, how did you know?" USS Midway gasps.

"You still have your carrier number painted on your Rig." You point to the big CV-41 painted on her rig.

"Of course of course!" Midway laughs. "I'm sorry, I'm not really used to talking with other shipgirls. They've cooped me up on that island for SO LONG."

"Wait, what-" You're about to say when Midway continues.

"Anyways, shall we do something about those Abyssals attacking the harbor? I haven't had much do do these past few months and I'm DYING to stretch my legs a little!"

"But how can you fight carrying the both of us?" You ask, referring to yourself and Sam.

"Well, my Skyraiders and Crusaders can provide all the protection." Midway winks at you. "But there's something else I'm DYING to use."

"What?" You frown. What other weapon could a carrier possibly be carrying?"

"The primary target... is that tanker over there, right?" Midway points to the main battle, which was still raging. Things weren't going too well, from what you see. The tanker had actually managed to beach itself onto the breakwater separating the Navy base from the open sea, and the Abyssals were using that as a staging point to launch raids on the base.

"Um yeah, that's it."

"Excellent! It's so much easier to hit static targets!" Midway says happily as what looks like a rocket launcher cranks into position on her her shoulder.

"What the-" You wince as the rocket's motor engages, temporarily blinding you as it streaks up into the sky.

The next few seconds are bit awkward, until your optics catch the missile coming back down right on top of the tanker. There's a brief flash, and suddenly the tanker is replaced with fire and smoke.

At this point Sam seems to have regained consciousness and her sanity, as she utters what you were just about to.

"What the FUCK."

"That." Midway puffs up with pride, "Is what V2 is for."
