Typically, there are three situations where facing a Water dragonette is tantamount to suicide.

The first is obvious. Fighting a Water dragonette in water is asking to be torn into itty bitty pieces and fed to the fish – if she doesn't just drown you.
The second is not quite as obvious. Facing a Water dragonette on the opposite side of a negotiating table is like making bargains with the American Devil Kami: you always get what you want, and you always pay far more than you ever wanted to, whether you were successful or not.
The third place is over electronic media.

Most people rely on visual cues to figure out what's going through someone's head. A fair number can hear what's going on over the voice of the person they're talking to. A Water dragonette on a telephone is nearly telepathic, and their instincts can lead them when their understanding of a person cannot. You're not just a Water dragonette any longer, and you have a lot of information that other people don't. Most importantly you have information you shouldn't have at all, and that means you have all the sticks, all three dragons, all four winds, and ones and nines in your hand, and everyone is wearing mirrored shades except you.

Okay, so the mahjong reference might be a little over the top. It is perfectly true that you have a lot more cards in your hand currently than you would normally have. The problem is getting to talk to Oba-san on the phone, and the first obstacle is Ryuu Himeyuri, the human sorceress who serves as spy-master for the entire Ryuu Clan. You are on your way to meet with the Ama divers, but you have some time.

Naturally the fact that you've called her yourself is more than likely going to unnerve her a little, because her personal numbers are supposed to be that, personal. And they would be if you hadn't stolen the phone bills of the clan and then had Akari help you research all of them just so you could prank call your cousin. Naturally, you never forgot any of them.

Himeyuri's rich, smooth voice (you would love to have sex with her voice. Not Himeyuri, she's not that attractive, but her voice, so luscious....) pours out of the phone like molasses on a hot day. “I am sorry, but Oba-san-”

[] Allow her to finish and then be Polite. Very, Very Polite.
[] Interrupt and tell her you really don't have time for her to put you off.
[] Let her finish and then explain to her exactly why this is now HER problem. In gory detail.
[] You don't have time for this; put her in her place for once and for all.
[] As much as you love listening to her voice, she is out of the loop and needs to do as she's told.

No matter how much we seem to have the cards in hand, I think we should be extra-careful while dealing with a human sorceress with a noticeably powerful voice.

So let's not give her any opportunity.

Oba-san has been dealing with Chinese sorcerers for quite a while, anyway.

Ryukusa is explicitly immune to vocal mind control. It took an abomination of kitsune and siren to even make her waver a little.

Still, you might have a point.

It's not mind control I'm worried about.

One of Ryukusa's flaws is that she's an overthinker, and human sorcerers are all about exploiting supernatural people's flaws

[X] You don't have time for this; put her in her place for once and for all.

“-cannot currently come to the phone at this time, Ryukusa-sama. If you would like to leave a message with me, I will inform her immediately and see that she can contact you at this number as soon as she becomes available.” Such a lovely voice. Such a basic spy trick. Such a foolish sorceress.

You stop on the sidewalk, and cross your arm under your breasts and rest your elbow upon it, mimicking the pose she has undoubtedly taken as she indicates to any one of the servants or spies she has nearby to trace the call. “Your courtesy and attendance to my needs are kind and thoughtful, Himeyuri-sama. Unfortunately, in the interests of preventing any further unfortunate incidents that could cost the Ryuu Clan valuable manpower and resources, particularly of the kind that breathes and does its best to serve the clan in every way before untimely and ignominious death prevents such service from continuing, I must insist that you allow me to speak with Oba-san at once, lest you inadvertently cause further loss of said manpower and resources through your ignorance of the entirety of the situation that you stand in the midst of while unaware of its full scope.”

You don't have to be anywhere near her to feel the hot blood rushing through her veins or the growing blush that she is trying to fight. It isn't as though you were being deliberately insulting, or saying anything untrue, after all....okay, no, you're being a bitch and shoving her nose into the fact that you don't care if she traces the call. But it's been ages since you got to say something like that and MEAN it.

“I am very sorry Ryukusa-sama, but it is simply impossible-”

Right, she's going to play the 'I am a recording machine and won't pretend to be anything else' card. That's unfortunate. That means you have to take the hard line.

“I am going to slaughter them.” You use the word for making animals into food rather than a colloquialism or a more basic word.

Her confusion is clearly faked. “I am sorry I do not-”

“I am going to slaughter them. Then I am going to take the pieces and arrange them in your living room while you sleep. If you wake up, which is extremely likely, I will slaughter you, take the pieces to your parents home, and place them there. In the event they waken as I am doing this, I will slaughter them, and place the parts in the houses of the next nearest relatives. I will continue this process until either no one wakes while I am there or until one month has passed, whichever happens first. It is important to remember that I do not have to be a quiet dragonette when moving through people's houses.”

“How-”

“Be silent.” To her credit she does so. “This is the important part. Are you listening carefully?” She says nothing. Good. “You are, by now, aware of what I am, at least. If you are not, you will need to request this information from Musumi Kanako. This is critical to understand the seriousness of my next few statements.” You lower your voice and speak in a very deliberate, quiet, firm tone. “I ~promise~ to do this whether or not you turn the phone over to Oba-sama, Ryuu Himeyuri. Do you understand the responsibility this places upon your shoulders?”

“Yes,” she says in a shaken whisper.

“Please allow me to speak to Oba-san.”
>>
>>45442082
“Yes, Ryukusa-sama. Please hold.” She places you on mute, or on hold, or something as you take a slow deep breath. It is a high risk, but what you have just done has placed Oba-san's spy-master on your side, because if Oba-san doesn't call them off, then Himeyuri will most likely do everything in her power to stop them. Because she can't afford not to, because you mean every word you said.

It is only few breaths later that the phone is reactivated. “Ryukusa-chan? To what do I owe this unexpected courtesy?” The soft, gentle, grandmotherly voice that you used to appreciate so much makes you want to boil your own blood. Still, so far so good, and you start walking again.

The Japanese are all about process and protocol.
>>
>>45442241
Ryukusa is merciful. She would not make them suffer.
Ryukusa is just. She would not involve innocents.
Ryukusa would not misjudge Himeyuri to have those same qualities to fear for her family for any sort of love for them.

Himeyuri is unable to ignore Ryukusa's threat/statement, as Ryukusa has just threatened the essential key part of Oba-san's information network that Himeyuri's family comprises of.

I am kind of worried about Toshida Ginka in the long run what happens once we leave the island?
>>45442294
Remember we are threatening this action for we are pretty sure they are planing a kidnapping of a friend or family member. this is a direct threat against us.
>>
>>45442431

Oba-shit isn't in the Management.

Also, being Eta, Ryukusa is allowed some laxism in the protocl.
>>
>>45442445
what are we trying to do then? are we going full power or getting the kidnapping called off?
>>
>>45442460
As a possessor of a Kamuy, she is in Management by proxy.
And Ryukusa may be eta but she has to consider being Horobi who is not.
>>
>>45442447

>I am kind of worried about Toshida Ginka in the long run what happens once we leave the island?

Once we leave the island, she only risks to be targeted by very foolish people who think they can get away with threatening someone Ryukusa care about, on an island protected by several Kami.
>>
>>45442431
Oba kinda broke protocol when she ate a god and trained you wrong on purpose
>>
[X] Be Ryukusa, with all that implies.
[+] Pull out all the stops! No brakes on this subterfuge train!

“Sorry about being late with my report, Oba-san. Unfortunately, I can't talk long, I'm about to do some important rites to help out the people who are letting us stay with them. I'm sure you know the ones. I'm taking really good care of Kumatori Kiki, despite the fact that there's an unusual amount of interference from other members of our clan. In fact, that's part of why I thought I should call, because it would be terribly sad if I had to deliver more bodies for our friends and family to bury.” Your cheer is quite real. You haven't had this much fun in a while. “Oh, and you'll have to forgive me for troubling Himeyuri-san, but she was really giving me a lot of unnecessary grief.”

The soft cluck of displeasure is meant to remind you of those younger days when all she had to do was say 'tsk' or shake her head to crush your spirit in her disapproval. So not working. “Ryukusa-chan, what did you say to that poor woman?”

“Oh, I promised to kill everyone in her extended family until there was no one left to pray to her ancestors if she lets your kidnappers get to my family. That should only take me a month, don't you think? I gave myself a month, anyways, because I figured three weeks was a little egotistical.” Her surprise is almost palpable, but you would bet your left arm – again – that there isn't the slightest sign of it to anyone else. “I figured I'd keep this phone handy for a bit longer, just in case you wished to get a hold of me personally, instead of sending people to bother me all the time.” That should make Oba-san aware that you can and will cut people away from her side with everything in your power if she continues to push.
>>
>>45442461

We're basicaly telling her "your goons better not come any closer. Or else."

>>45442495

Horobi is definitively Eta, and being the possessor of a Kamuy would actually get Oba-shit roasted by the Management.
>>
>>45442461
Little of both. First matter is stopping the kidnapping, but in the process of that blowing her out of the water just by knowing about that is important, give her pause at least.

Maybe we can do some serious, big deal negotiations.
>>
>>45442541
This is glorious

“Ryukusa-chan, that is really uncalled for, Himeyuri-chan is just doing her duty, after all.” Her disappointed tone again hearkens back to your childhood, but you're far, far past that now. It looks like she isn't quite getting the hint.

It's a little more dire than that. She's telling Himeyuri if she LETS those goons get close, she's responsible and Ryukusa will punish HER for it if Oba-san herself doesn't call them off.

Ryukusa did leave herself an out by saying that she could be quiet enough not to get caught if she really wanted. Himeyuri will assume she's not going to do that I bet.

[X] Oh, auntie dearest, you and I both know that she's doing your duty now.
[+] Take her cage and treat it like a dry martini made for that British guy.

“Oba-san, Himeyuri-san isn't doing her duty to the clan if she's taking phone calls from me, you know. I mean, I'd have to be in a pretty serious situation to interrupt her investigation the Hojo Group's activities in Europe, or the Kaja's rampage across the spiritual landscape of Tokyo. I mean, what kind of jerks go around killing cat youkai just to distract me from my job? I mean, isn't it weird to think that destroying an entire population of youkai should attract my attention?” Her breaths have gotten very slow, very deliberate. The gears in her head are churning away desperately. “And having a whole bunch of my classmates and kohai and senpai come bother me while I'm working? Twice even? What kind of duty do you have her doing that she does something like that?”

She chuckles, and you can tell it's a forced chuckle. No one but a Water dragonette or dragonne could, you suspect, but it's definitely forced. “Ryukusa-chan, surely you don't think that it is necessary to threaten her entire bloodline simply to make a point, do you? That is very excessive, and excessive force is uncalled for when you have more subtle methods at your disposal?”

Oh, she's going to pull the 'be quiet and stop making noise in the spiritual world' card on YOU? “But Oba-san, it's too late....after all I did promise. I imagine that she is suffering a great deal in performing the unnecessary duties. It grieves me to see the problems I am causing her already. It seems cruel to trouble her this much."

"Besides....” And you let your voice slip into a slightly more sinister timbre. “....isn't it my own duty....maybe even my nature....to destroy anything that might interfere with my duties? Say, someone trying to abduct the people I rely upon to keep my principle and household in safe order? Doesn't that merit making sure she understanding the scope of the situation she is involved in, since she hasn't already?”

“Ryukusa-chan, it is not so simple a thing, to interfere with the Guardian Deities of the Temple Doors,” she says, her elderly voice calm and collected. “They have already been gone two hours, sent to secure your presence here at home.” She almost – ALMOST sounds regretful, but then, she should. And the fact that she isn't marks her as a monster of the most inhuman sort.

Because, unholy fuck. That bitch sent The Twins after your family. Ah and Oh are fuckin' monsters, and they're coming for your people. Fire and Water, but with a massive dose of the Void between them, they're not simply Elites – they're two of the Generals of the Clan. Fucking WARLORDS is what she sent after your people.

Hey! Ryukusa's not a monster.

Personaly, I think she's not aware on how much a shit Oba-san is. I mean, respect of the hierarchy or not, the old priestess still has to hide herself behind a mask of benevolence, to avoid subordinates rebelling.

If all goes to shit we ask Oda-shit to hand the phone to himeyuri so we can apologize for what we will be forced to do. Poor girl.

The funny part is that Ryukusa never precised who the "them" is, in "I will slaughter them"

I'm not sure it's how it work, but she could probably still accomplish her promise by killing a chicken or a duck, cooking it, and put the meal into Himeyuri's room.

[XXX] ….you're becoming awfully impatient with me. Is there something I should know?
[XX] This is a complication, if you really sent those two....wasn't that a little rash?
[XX] That's unfortunate, Kinashut. What do you plan on doing about it?

The situation has changed, but not significantly. You know some deadly, powerful people would be out for your family, you just didn't expect it to be a step down from sorceresses who posses kami and people who could kill you with a look. Of course, you're none too certain that you could cope against a pair of spirit-child warlords in the prime of their power and life, not without doing something everyone on Japan might regret.

Of course, you're not done with her yet. Two hours? Doubtful. They would have had your family by now and be on their way back. There's both time and opportunity here, and you can't afford to waste either. No, this is not even close to being.

You can't afford that so you're not going to allow it.

“Oba-san, I seem to be getting the feeling you're becoming very impatient with me. I mean, Hauko-kun was kind of a shock – and shame on you for letting me think you weren't involved with that at first – but you seem awfully concerned that I come home right away. Is there something I should know, Oba-san? Are you....unwell? Are you concerned for yourself? Because....really those two.” You sigh deeply, shaking your head.

“I mean it is one thing to send my least favorite cousin. The things I did to him, I don't think he'll recover for....well, ever. And then poor Sakumo-sensei. Though, I admit, making Akari-niji-chan into the most skilled hand to hand fighter in the entire clan....I am kind of proud of that.” The fact that Hauko is alive isn't something you need to tell her. She can find out on her own, if she bothers. “Are you certain it wasn't a rash decision to send the strongest Warlords of Clan Ryuu to fetch me? I mean....I might have to do something drastic if they show up here.”
>>
>>45444140
Make sure that they're close enough to drag into a barrier. Dad might be curious as to who is interrupting his ceremony.

“Ryukusa-chan, you are being quite silly....I think that you should accompany them home, really. Then there wouldn't be any need to place any of your pretty foxes and serpents in danger. Disobedience carries a harsh penalty for an adult, and I could speak with the Elders still....” Her wheedling, condescending tone has edges in desperation and concern. Not fear – she hasn't fallen that far yet. Still, something important must be pressing her to try and acquire you or Akari so desperately. “Dear Ryukusa-chan, I hope that you will consider this course of action most carefully. It would be terrible if someone got hurt simply because you did not wish to return home.” She means Himeyuri and her people, as well as your family.

You turn the thoughts around slowly, and then decide to test exactly how desperate she might be. You hop up and grab a branch, quickly flensing it of bark so the make delicate, beautiful rows of curled darkness and white bark. It is quickly done, and crude, but you concentrate all your incredible will upon the prayer you make up entirely of whole cloth. You pray to her to thank her for not harming you with the creatures she sent; you hope she returns to the earth she comes from soon, and you pray she will answer your one question as best she can. You finish shaving the last few curls of bark into the branch and then hurl it over the wall, into the sea, sacrificing the inaw to your father and to the greatest kamuy save for the Hearth Goddess. “This is entirely unfortunate, Kinashut Kamuy; what do you intend to do about it?”

A voice utterly unlike that of Oba-san, a voice richer and more sweet, beautiful and sad and kind, says a single word. “Wait.”

“So.” The hard, cruel voice that emerges from the phone is neither Kinashut Kamuy's, nor Oba-sans. It is the voice of a woman of middle age, an arrogant, cruel, intelligent voice. The sorceress who possesses Kinashut. “You have been learning tricks from your Ainu friends, Ryukusa.” She nearly spits your name, her confusion transforming quickly into frustration and anger. “Clever little dragonette you are.”

[] So she's already breaking free? How unfortunate for us both.

Because it strengthened Ryuu in both body and resolve, taught her how to hone her powers, helped her become a demigod more easily, and gifted her with a brand new kami (that we still need to address and assist at some point). For how painful and horrifying it was, that journey was nothing but beneficial to her.

I'm also wondering if the sea snakes during our little undersea journey weren't also her doing, as they warned us about the incoming Clan Ryu troops.

>>45444610

Because of three things: something snake-like tripped us, the Kamuy just have to wait that the priestess exhausts herself against a powerful Ryukusa, and the priestess is unaware of this trip.
>>
>>45444669

I think it was just a trick of the Water Dragonette that was trying to scare us.
>>
>>45444669
>>45444697
That, or she would have died.
The journey could have wounded Ryukusa.
The journey DID scar her mentally in some dark ways.
The journey could have killed her.

But then, Ryukusa dying might have also stopped the possessor from gaining Ryukusa's body.
>>
>>45444516
We should try to find out. You never know what might be found out as to why this started. Japan deserves to know why.
>>
>>45444722

Keep in mind that Akari would probably have ended herself, if Ryukusa had died.

So, it sounds like a win/win situation for the Kamuy
>>

[XX] Now we speak to one another properly, you and I.
[X] Not very long then at all, I see.
[X] I was wondering if you were trying to push me, but you weren't, were you.

“At first I thought you were trying to push me into taking on my true nature earlier than I was prepared for, but that wasn't it at all, was it? At this rate she'll break free of you without me doing anything at all.” You step inside the building – you maybe have a few minutes before you have to hang up. Though. Plenty of time. Also, you don't believe a word of what you just said. But she will. She'll make assumptions, because she's off balance and unhappy. Human nature triumphs every single time.

Not that it makes her one whit less dangerous.

“Now that you and I are speaking properly to one another, even if it isn't face to face, let's discuss a few basic facts, shall we? You've made a terrible and desperate maneuver to acquire a way to blackmail me, and I've forced your own subordinates to work against you – and this won't be the only or last time I manage it. You can't protect her from me – if you could do that, you wouldn't have to hold hostages against my good behavior.” Pure guesswork, really, but it does follow. “All by myself I've managed to force you to reveal yourself, compromised your spy-master, and drawn out the kamuy you possess for long enough to get a question answered.” You let that sink in. “I haven't even dipped into my deepest, darkest waters yet, and you're in drowning in trouble.”
>>
>>45445074
You could go on, but you want to see if she'll do it. If she'll call them off. Because if she doesn't, you just might have to pull that dragon tile out.

“You're an upstart little dragonette with delusions of grandeur, Ryukusa. I have many, many more weapons and tools to use against you if I so desire. You're going to have to face me sooner or later, and when you do, you will lose, as all others have, because you cannot comprehend the scope and breadth of my plans.”

[] Hey, lady, if I wanted to become a god, I could already do that – you'll always be second rate.
[] Maybe not, but then again, I'm a pretty simple lizard at heart.
[] Why don't we do that. Make it later rather than sooner, and we'll make it a date. NOT THAT KIND!
[] I don't see how I couldn't comprehend the scope and breadth of your plans, considering how many centuries of work I've flushed.

[+] Pretty cliché, and not very well done cliché to boot.

Though the urge to roll your eyes and complain about the level of cliché you're dealing with at the moment is strong, you take a deep breath, mostly because she's trying to rile you up or lower your defenses. Not happening, no matter how much of a cliché villain she is. And really, it's the truth – she IS a cliché villain, trying her hardest to gain the power of a kami, to become a kami, when all she really needs to do is just be herself. Hell, with a life as long as hers has been, she could have achieved enlightenment at least!

She probably just likes eating meat too much.

“To be perfectly honest, you should have added a 'you'll be on your knees before me' or 'you will regret your words' or at the very, very least a 'foolish mortal' comment in that diatribe. It would have at least followed the formula a little better.” Wow, silence can seethe. That's kind of terrifying, really. “Besides, with centuries of planning crashing down around your shoulders, are you really so certain your plans are as subtle as you make them out to be? Even this rather childish attempt to keep me distracted and on the phone to give The Twins time to get here doesn't really isn't getting you anywhere.”

“Yet here you are, speaking to me still.” She tries to make it sound like a triumph, but it's a pretty sad attempt.

The problem is she doesn't want to call back The Twins because she's hoping they'll manage something, and it's a pretty good bet they could if Himeyuri hasn't sent her people after them. Himeyuri's people are good, and you've got some confidence that they might just manage despite it being the Generals Two. Combine that with a little hope and luck, and maybe, just maybe splitting the party, you might just manage to drive them off. “Well, admittedly I'm a pretty simple lizard, ma'am, and to be perfectly honest, I got enough out of this that I can call it an unequivocal win on my part.” You pause outside the Ama dressing rooms. “But there is one final question I really do want to ask before I give up and decide you're no longer worth talking to?”

The silence is haughty, expectant, and....bored, really. She doesn't think you have anything more to surprise her with.

“Is there anything you'd like me to say on your behalf to my real dad when I meet him in the next few minutes?”

The shocked horror of the other end of the phone is pretty freakin' loud for being silent.

“Well, in that case, have a nice day. I'll talk to Oba-san later.” You hang up the phone, and turn it off before slipping it into ~Nowhere~. You really have no hope for the next person to walk into that room. Upset ancient sorceresses tend to be hard on the furniture, from what you've heard. Which really isn't all that much, honestly, but still.
>>
>>45445867
You step into the dressing room, and the Ama greet you with smiles and waves, completely unaware that you're very likely going to turn Mikimoto Pearl Island into a spiritual disaster area in the next thirty minutes. Ginka smiles and shows you the spare diving uniform, and you smile as you look it over, trying very, very hard not to let the panic at the bottom of your heart boil over into terror. Not because of Oba-san's people, kami no. That's going to be trouble and pain and a heaven of a fight, sure. But really, that's the least of your problems.

Opening your mind to the Void, you start delivering warnings to your loved ones even as you prepare to meet your father for the first time in your life.

I feel bad for the people Himeyuri sent. But aside from that, I've got to ask: what are they going to try against such opponents? Use sorcery to slow down the twins, while keeping far away? Mess up with the elemental balance between them?
>>

>>
>>45446124
No one that the sorceress hasn't allowed to know. Anyone who might have figured it out has been carefully vetted to be a supporter or quietly given dangerous and often fatal missions.
>>
>>45446179

>How terrified is that poor girl?

Himeyuri, you mean?

I think she'll work for us soon enough. Well, she's already working for us, technicaly, but Ryukusa doesn't threaten her allies. So she's still a coerced foe right now.
>>
>>45446148
Depends on who she sent. If she sent all three, it will be a terrifying fight and devastating to the local spiritual background. If she sent two, then it would be the Yakumo and Biko, who would attempt to ensorcerel the Generals into fighting each other and then sweep in for a kill....in theory.

the problem is, of course, the Generals Ah and Oh and going to be very familiar with most of their standard tactics. Only with Shinju do they have a higher than 30% chance of winning anything decisively.

>>45446179
Ryukusa hasn't checked, and it could be exceptionally dangerous in the current climate to try and find out without a go-between or introduction.

>>
>>45446542
That would be very much un-Ryuu like. She's not that far gone. Ryukusa's threat means she has to try and stop Ryukusa, for the sake of her family, even if she believes that is also futile. She isn't completely dishonorable, which is why Ryukusa's threat made such an impact.
>>
Well, now I feel really bad.
>>
>>45446656
I will point out that Ryukusa started off reasonable and ran into a brick wall.

and gave herself a plethora of outs, even with the promise.
>>
>>45446597
I'm confused. I thought our threat was "I'm going to paint you room with some corpses. If you wake up during this loud process, I will kill you and head to the next member of your family to repeat the process until I am done."
Making it so that we can't wake her up during the process seems reasonable since that breaks the casual chain and we don't visit the rest of her family, even if we simply slit her throat in her sleep.
>>
>>45446705

Sure, but I'm feeling bad for the minions she sent.

I mean, sure, they would have mercilessly attempted to destroy Ryukusa's life if given the order, but it's always sad to see people die just because their leader was a moron, and because someone was pissed off.

>>45446715

Drugging herself for a month would be the coward way out, and we all know what Yakuza thinks of cowards.

>>
>>45446792
Hauko is actually doing very well under Hinata-hakase's care, and Hinata is a little put out with Ryukusa for putting him under her care. On the other hand, if she gets the Jewel, that will cover nearly any amount of trouble Ryukusa could put her through.
