“This... this idn’t right,” the old repair man mutters. You can’t tell if he has a speech impediment, some kind of accent, or if he’s chewing something. He spits into a bucket in the corner, somehow missing all the hanging electronic junk in the way.

You check out the printout coming out of the computer he hooked the Pokedex too. It’s just pictures of a Pokemon you recognizes as...what was it...poly.. no, Porygon! Porygon2, you’re pretty sure. You haven’t spent much time looking up normal types, despite all your time as a trainer.

“Welp. This is dnew.” He wipes his nose on his sleeve. “You got yourself a Pokemon infection. A real bad one. I’de never seen anything like this, but I think I can get ‘er out and save the ‘Dex.”

A Pokemon in your dex? That’s nuts! “What about the Pokemon inside? Will it be alright?”

“I don’t see why not. Truth be told, though, it might not want out. I may have to make it uncomfortable to make it leave.”

“...uncomfortable?” You eye him suspiciously.

“Woah. Nodthing cruel-like. Just...turning off the AC on a hot day. That sorta thing.”

It doesn’t answer. It just spins and floats around. Maybe it doesn’t know that Fir became a professor? If it is his pokemon, it hasn’t seen him in years.

“Do you want to go see him?”

It spins some more. “It’s only been 13 minutes.”

You and the repairman exchange glances. He starts pouring over a readout on the other screen. “The internal clock wasd shot oud years ago.” He keeps looking into it. “The battery is pretty messed up, too. It’s a miracle this thing hasn’t leaked or just power cycled itself. Must’ve been tossed around somethin’ fierce.”

“So what does that mean?”

“Means,” he wipes his face on his sleeve again, “I wouldn’t jostle it. It could corrupt or fall apart. This is much worse than I thought. We can try forcing the Pokemon out, but we’d have to be quick. We could try putting it in low power mode. It’s still got a risk, but it’s less risky than forcing it out, and it’ll guarantee it doesn't break until we do something else. Or,” he spits, “we can do nothing. Leave it alone for now, and hope it doesn’t just melt down.”

Everything inside is in limbo.” He pours over the data. “Looks like this thing has had a few lifetimes worth of experience, in there. It may think it’s been 13 minutes, but it’s lived a good few decades, relatively speaking. The clock and processor are all sorts of messed up and overclocked.”

I’m happy to do whatever I can to safely get it out, or just transfer it somewhere safe, but I don’t think it needs me anymore. I'm just happy that Porygon is alive and well.”

You thought he'd be way more ecstatic.“You don’t want it back?”

He looks away. “If this data is correct, Porygon’s had a good, long life of it’s own in there. I can’t barge in and give it that sort of dilemma.” He skims through some data. “Porygon might not even be alone in there. I don't know, we'd have to run some tests.”

One of the smartest Pokemon I’ve ever seen, but just didn’t understand the concept of time. How funny is that?” He chuckles. “But still. If he’s actually experienced decades in there, he still might have his own life.” He sighs. “Okay, I’ll fly out, check it out, and see what the most responsible move is from there.”

You smile. “I didn’t get to chat with Porygon much, but I know any Pokemon of yours would be glad to see you.”

He blushes. “You’ve had more adventure with Porygon than I have, at this point. Whatever happens, I think you deserve a say in it too. Porygon may want to just stay with you, in or out of the dex.”

“So, you’d be okay with me training Porygon?”

“If that’s what Porygon wants, I’d be thrilled.” He pauses. “I mean, if you’d want that. I don’t want to impose. I know you have a lot going on.”

You stop him. “I guess we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. I’ll see you soon, Professor.”

You stretch and head back to the hotel. You’ll want to do a bit of both over the next few days. A nice, balanced approach is best.

Robin is already gone when you get there. The others let you know she’s out in the nearby park, training.

“I had to convince her to go train instead of waiting for you,” Clair says, hands on her hips. “You sure have her whipped.”

“Like she’s the only one whipped,” Jeanine teases Clair.

Vance comes out of his room with a bang full of picnicing food. “Perfect timing! We were just about to go catch up with her. You and Robin have a lot of training to do, and the three of us aren’t going to let you slack off. Consider us your pit crew. You just worry about training. I’m on food and and keeping any strangers off your back, Jeanine is on spotting and relaxation so you don’t burn out, and Clair is on training help.”

Clair cracks her neck, shaking her twin tails. “I’ve been training, too. You won’t have an easy time against me.”

“You guys!” You don’t know what to say. They wave off your gratitude and push you out the door to where Robin is.

Robin seems to be putting more focus on studying Cliff. She still trains, but she keeps her head in the books as she runs her Pokemon through drills. You know her, she’s worried she’ll make a mistake, not that her Pokemon aren’t strong enough. She puts a lot of emphasis on strategy over power.

Not that you’re just a brute. You’re the status effect queen. But you’ve learned that just being a little bit faster, or being able to hit a little harder or get up just one more time can make all the difference. Sometimes life just hates on you and the only luck you get is bad luck, and all you can do to be prepared for those situations is be strong. You want to study, but if you slack on training you could just be overwhelmed.

You take out Aria. She immediately puts on a tense fighting stance, ready to take her training seriously.

You put a hand on her fists and lower them. “None of that today. Instead, we’re going to work on singing.”

She lights up. Her serious fighting aura vanishes, and she looks up at you with big, round eyes.

You blow tunes on your flute and she brings powerful, loud melodies. You guide her pitch up and down, making her stretch her chords and really work it. By the end of the day, she’s shaking rocks apart.

With Vance, Jeanine, and Claire bringing you meals, giving backrubs, and handling all your day-to-day stuff, you can really make a lot of progress in a day.

You pat her head and give her a juice box and Jeanine picked up for you. “Good work!”

She holds it tightly and sips greedily, rolling back and forth on her small legs.

The next day is more of the same. You start off the first half studying with Robin. She’s focusing on Cliff’s Sandstorm. The sand he whips up is finer than usual. It seems to do more damage than normal, and hurt visibility, yet he never seems to have any accuracy problems. There must be a trick. You’ll need to watch out for that.

Next up is Levi. You take her out, and she surprisingly avoids roaring. She whips her tail to stretch and smugly awaits your instructions.

She roars mightily. She’s already a dragon, she says. This will be easy.

As you train through the day, you find there are subtle differences between how she works, and a dragon does. She’s got the attitude, mostly, but she’s missing that innate, royal aura that Dragon types have. She’s got something just as good though. A drive to be strong enough to protect everyone else. She smashes deep ditches into the ground, eventually getting the hang of it.

“Great work!” You toss her some poffins. She’s eagerly chomps it out of the air.

The next morning you study some more with Robin. Cliff has some sort of pattern to his Sandstorm. He opens a clear path in the middle before attacking, so his Pokemon can aim without impediment. If you can figure out the wind pattern, you can predict where he’ll strike.

Now it’s Vlad’s turn.

Vlad swoops down in front of you and hovers. He looks extremely determined. This is his dream.

“Then let’s get to work!”

Vlad takes well to Double Team. You end up getting Clair to help aim very light but fast attacks at him. He learns to dodge even those.

Oh yes. This will be good.

The morning after is more studying. Vance has tea ready. You make sure to thank your friends each time they do something to help. You feel like you’re in danger of letting your successes and title get to your head. You don’t want to be one of those people.

You get a few wind patterns down for the Sandstorm, but it becomes clear you won’t be able to learn them all. Maybe with the few days left, you can guess some of them, but there are no guarantees.

Raistlin’s training is next. He informs you that he can probably figure the patterns out, but he couldn’t beam anything to your head without being a major distraction.

He considers the question. Can anything truly be called ‘mastered’? When is there no longer room to realistically improve? How can one know? What is-

He nods. That makes sense to him.

You have him teleport, again and again. He has the speed down. He can really move it. But now he’s improving in a new direction. If he takes just a little bit longer, he can move more than just himself. He can take one other person or Pokemon. He doubts it’ll work on a large or healthy enough Pokemon if it’s powerful and resists, but Pokemon roughly his size or smaller, or larger ones if they’re worn down or mentally distracted work just fine.

That’ll be really useful. He can’t get too far into the air, but it’s still far enough to do some damage.

The morning after, you once again study with Robin. You’ve noticed that when Cliff’s Pokemon use Dig, they’re so fast they can do it in half the time that others do. But instead, he’ll go underground, use a buffing move, then strike. His opponents rarely catch on about what move he uses under the Earth, giving him a strong advantage.

Trunks is up next. He cackles as you take him out, but once the sunlight hits, he instead stretches out and absorbs as much sunlight as possible.

Right now Trunk’s special protective move only covers moves that aren’t area of effect. It’s like Substitute, but instead of taking health, it’s just not quite as good.

“I think we can make it even better, don’t you?”

Trunks agrees. This’ll be great! Imagine the fear on his opponent’s face when their strongest move gets blocked! The sheer terror!

You both work on the move. There’s a lot of ways around i, and try as you might, you can’t expand the coverage area too much.

But what you can do instead is make it more mobile. It can be used as a reaction, at the expense of being unable to use it again for a little while. So if Trunks finds himself surprised by a move, he can pop it up automatically as a last line of defense, instead of needing to plant it down. This’ll allow for more time to use other moves.

By the next day, you’re feeling a bit tired. Despite what everyone is doing to let you concentrate on getting ready, you find yourself wearing down. It’s not too bad yet, but it’s a little hard to concentrate.

Your studying Cliff with Robin when you both start to notice the same pattern. The very first time he uses Earthquake in a match, it’s much less powerful against his opponent. What it does instead, is level out the ground, removing a lot of above-ground rocks, smoothing the landscape, and loosening the dirt to allow his Pokemon to use Dig more easily.

Destiny bubbles happily, and jumps into your arms. She’s happy to get the attention.

The day goes by quickly. Destiny is much more oriented towards direct beam attacks. She does learn it though, and gives it a pretty rough spin that can disorient the hell out of a foe.

“You’re awesome!” You give her a great big hug. Destiny can’t decide if she wants to hop around, or get more hugs. She tries to do both and knocks you over.


At the end of the day you crawl into bed with Robin and Clair. Both of them are topless, distracting, and cuddly. You feel like you’re getting spoiled. You used to be alone, often camping outside to get away from the orphanage, cold, and full of trust issues.

You hope you can give your Pokemon a chance to shine tomorrow. They’ve all put in so much effort. You owe it to them to bring your best.

So I've been thinking about which pokemon to start off with against Cliff. He might start with that tank of a Hippodown, or might enticipate that his opponent will open up with something to counter it.

If the former, I had planned to open with Trunks to nail him with Destiny Bond if the fight turned south. Then use Oberon to take advantage of the sandstorm, then Destiny to use rain dance.

On the other hand, most of his team's capabilities hasn't been shown, so he might start off the same way as his previous match.
