Hello and welcome back to Mortal Kombat Thief Quest, a continuation of Mortal Kombat Konquest.

When we last left our unfortunate hero, he quested to save his sister from the clutches of a vile vampire. Along the way, he met a warrior of light known as Ashrah, before coming face-to-face with another vampire, Nitara. However, upon his return to Z'unkahrah and rescuing his sister, things took a turn for the worse...

It has been three days since Cao was captured. Three days without knowing how well his sisters are, or what happened to Ashrah. He has sat in his prison cell awaiting judgment, and he knows it will mean death.

He has attempted escape, but no matter how hard he pulls on every corner of his cell, nothing works. Everything is solid, no stone is loose and no bar will bend. He has since given up trying. Upon finding a loose stone, he has been scratching the walls of his prison cell. He cannot write, but he can draw.

He draws three portraits: one for each of his sisters, and one of himself. He looks at his image as he finishes it, staring into a stone-carved reflection of his own eyes.

He then takes the rock and draws straight lines down the front of it, simulating the bars of his prison before throwing the rock aside. He's never felt so frustrated or helpless before, both at the Empire and his failure to run away. Damn that Erron Black and his weapons...

He is alone down here in the dungeons. Which means Ashrah either escaped, or is even worse off than he is.

He sits in the corner of his cell, sighing as he sits and waits. He wishes that the Kahn would just get it bloody over with already; he's likely to die of boredom first otherwise.

Just then, there is a noise. The dungeon door opening. Someone is coming.

Cao does nothing as he looks up and sees one of Kotal Kahn's guards appear in front of his cell. He looks down at Cao, his eyes shining in the dim light behind he skull of his helmet.

"Hah... Look at you, boy. Not so high and mighty now, are you?"

Cao looks away. He's not going to give the guard any dignity. The man continues, "You don't know what they have planned for you. At first, the Emperor thought he'd kill you, but then he wanted to cut off your hands. Instead, someone else convinced him to make it into a spectacle."

Now Cao is interested. He looks up at the guard and asks, "What's that supposed to mean?"

"Hehe... you'll see. Now we're getting another prisoner down here. Looks like he's going to share your fate, so make friends while you can."

The man laughs as he walks away and someone else is dragged into the dungeon, kicking and spitting. "C'mon, let's have a go! You cunts never tangled with an Aussie before! Ya right bloody pricks!"

Cao watches as they open a cell and throw him in. He's young, maybe only about his age or just a bit older, with dark hair and scruffy facial hair. They walk off as he shouts at their backs, "Yeah, run away! C'mere and see what happens! C'mon!"

He shakes his head as they close the door. "Bloody wankers..."

He looks across the way at Cao. "Arvo, mate."

"So what are you in for?" Cao asks.

The young man laughs. "Bloody hell, what ain't I in for? Smuggling, drug running, looting, arson, grand theft auto, wanted for aiding and known fugitive and criminal organization, association with said fugitive and criminal organization, suspected acts of terrorism (domestic ‘n abroad) and, my personal favorite, quadruple homicide and three counts of manslaughter due to rampant negligence. Hahah, oh, that was a night… So, how ‘bout you?”

“I stole some money from the Kahn’s guest.”

His fellow inmate laughs. “What a riot! But all that stuff I said is just stuff I’m wanted for in Earthrealm. You should see my old man, his record puts mine ta right shame. Name’s Trevor.”

Earthrealm... So he's not from here. That would explain his strange way of talking...

“I'm Cao.”

“And you’re the one who stole from the golden boy, eh? Kaito what’s-his-name.”

“I guess,” Cao shrugs.

“Well, that’s why I’m here, believe it or not,” Trevor says with a smile. “You got some attention when you did that.”

"I wanted money, not attention. And attention from who?" Cao asks.

Trevor chuckles. "Ever hear of the Black Dragon, mate?" He holds up the back of his hand, showing off a tattoo of two black dragons around a knife.

"No."

"I find that hard to believe. We're Earthrealm's most wanted, and rising high on Outworld's most wanted too. We're a lotta things, but at our core, we're all thieves. Like you."

Cao gives him a strange look. "So?"

"Well, we got ears, eyes and dicks in this city. Anyone ballsy enough to steal from Kaito and skilled enough to get away from him is worth a look, eh? And I gotta say, you don't look like much, but appearances and decpetion 'n all that wankery. Don't matter. Kano wants to talk to you."

Cao shrugs. "Again, never heard of him."

"Head of the Black Dragon," Trevor laughs. "And my old man."

Cao listens closely to each word. If this is true, then maybe he has a way out of this death sentence...

"They get caught too?"

"I don't know. I haven't seen them. I hope they made it out okay; I led the guards away from them to give them a chance."

"Ah, a softie for family, eh?" Trevor chuckles.

"You work with your family too," Cao says.

"Yeah, but I hate my old man. I'd put a knife in his back if it meant not having to be sent into a bloody prison just to deliver a message to someone."

Cao lets out a sigh. "So, it's just the message, then? No rescue?"

"Oh, there will be," Trevor says. "But not now, not here. The Black Dragon has a plan to get us both out but we're gonna be in the thick of it, you 'n me."

"What does that mean, exactly?"

Trevor is about to open his mouth when the dungeon doors open again. He closes it and gives Cao a, "I'll tell you later" look.

A lone figure walks into the dungeon and stops in front of Cao's cell. He looks up at her, recognizing her as the First Minister to Kotal Kahn, the kytinn D'Vorah. She looks down at him with black eyes, her strange chitin-like skin gleaming in what little light there is, making her seem strange and alien.

"This One has words for you," she says in her strange, high-pitched voice.

Cao looks around, intentionally avoiding eye contact. "Does anyone else hear that annoying buzzing sound? Must be a fly or a gnat or something."

"You are unamusing and soon to be dead."

"Are those the words? The ones you came down here to say? Because you didn't say anything I didn't already know."

"Your impertinence is only matched by how pathetic you are. This One only cared to come here to speak of your mother.”

Cao looks up at her. “You know nothing about my mother.”

“This One knows that when our Emperor executed your father for treason, your mother was left to raise you and your sisters alone. That she spoke up against the rightful rule of Kotal Kahn instead of wisely keeping her mouth closed. That the Emperor personally ordered her to be silenced, quickly and quietly.”

D’Vorah leans closer and smiles, showing white, sharp teeth.

“And This One knows that she died a slow, agonizing death as the young feasted upon her insides. This One knows she was delicious.”

Cao stares up at her with wide, horrified eyes. D’Vorah’s smile only widens when he jumps up and leaps to the bars, taking a swing at her. “You damn bug! You didn’t! You didn’t!”

“Your time comes soon,” D’Vorah taunts as she dodges his attack. “Enjoy your final breathes knowing that your mother’s were filled with screams.”

She leaves as Cao pulls on his bars some more. He wants nothing more than to escape and tear that insect apart.

Trevor looks on. “Need a minute there, mate?”

Cao sits silently against the wall of his cell. He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. He remembers the last time he ever saw his mother; she told him and Sanra to stay with Hua until she came back, but she never did. Up until now, he had always assumed she had fled and left them.

Now he knows, and his hatred for Kotal Kahn and his lackeys has only grown stronger. He looks over at Trevor. "Tell me about the escape plan."

"Well, we're getting taken out of here soon," Trevor says. "Tomorrow. The shokan are coming to the city."

"The shokan..."

"Yeah, for a royal visit. Kotal Kahn has a big party planned, and we're the entertainment."

"Meaning...?"

"He's re-opening the arena, like the old days so I'm told. We're gonna fight in it while everyone watches."

"Against each other?"

"Maybe," Trevor says. "Dunno what they've got planned. Could be anythin' honestly."

Cao nods. "Alright... So, when do the Black Dragon spring us? Before?"

"No," Trevor smiles. "During. They're gonna attack the arena and get us out."

"Why? Why not now?"

"Because all the guards and Kotal Kahn will be distracted. Dad's got somethin' up his sleeve, he wants to steal some kinda relic from Kotal Kahn's armory. Don't worry about it, the less you know the better, trust me."

Cao nods. "So, they attack the arena and we leave with them. Then what?"

"Then we head back to base, have a few drinks and celebrate." Trevor shrugs. "Easy."

Cao sighs. "Yeah... Easy."

Maybe the plan will work. But he can't help but think that if given the chance to strike at D'Vorah, he just might abandon the plan to take it...

"I want to stay in the city to find my sisters," Cao says.

"You can find them when we're done at our base," Trevor replies. "Kano wants a meeting and he'll get his meeting whether you like it or not." He shrugs again. " 'sides, I'm sure they're fine. You gave them a chance to get out, right? And they're not in here with us. They'll be alright."

Cao sits back. He'll get to go free and screw over the Kahn---not a bad deal. In front of his shokan visitors, no less. Cao's heard a lot about the shokan but never seen one here in the city. He knows that they often come and visit but he always avoided such places.

Actually... Once, he saw a shokan in the market when he was very young. He only caught a glimpse of it before running to hide behind his mother.

He shakes his head. Seems like he can't get his mother out of his thoughts now...

He looks up at the ceiling and wonders what he will face in the arena tomorrow.

Cao curls up on his cot and closes his eyes. He's got a big day tomorrow.

That night, he is visited by a terrible dream. He sees Ashrah, the beautiful warrior of light, fighting valiantly over his unconscious body. D'Vorah is there, attacking her with larger stingers emerging from her back. The white-clad woman fights well, using her kriss to block the attacks, but D'Vorah is too fast, too deadly---she is impaled on the ends of her stingers after she is distracted by a cloud of insects.

He sees Ashrah fall, and D'Vorah pick up her weapon. He then sees a mote of light emerge from Ashrah's body, surging upwards towards the heavens... but then a fiery hand from the earth below emerges to grasp it, pulling it down into an inferno unlike any he has ever seen before, a land of fire and death... There, the light is twisted, taking a new form, monstrous and terrible. It opens its mouth and---

Cao awakens in a cold sweat, sitting straight up in his bed. The first thing he hears is the roar of a crowd. He looks towards his cell window and looks out.

The dungeon is part of the palace, and so he can see the massive courtyard. In the distance, a half-finished giant statue of Kotal Kahn can be seen.

Cao grips the bars of his cell as he looks down on the gathering. Half the city's populace must be here. They are chanting.

"KO-TAL KAHN! KO-TAL KAHN! KO-TAL KAHN!"

Their cheers reach a pitch when he appears atop a large platform leading out from his temple-palace. The clouds above seem to part and light shines upon him. The osh-tekk reaches the end of the platform and holds out his arms, surrounded by burning braziers of great flames, as the crowd cheers for him.

Cao finds the sight sickening. All of the worms of this city showing up to grovel at his feet, at the feet of a murderer and a tyrant. They see him as though a god, a titan among men. He wields great power, but one of his skills is the forging of speeches.
>>
“My people!” he shouts in a loud, booming voice. They cheer but quiet down to hear him speak. “Long have you endured the wrath of Outworld. Long did you languish under the rule of Shao Kahn the Usurper. But like this very city you stand in you yet remain, growing stronger with each passing day! Your fortitude is as stone, your will is as iron!”

The crowd cheers again. “Your dedication and strength shall not go unrewarded. Your perseverance in these trying times is not unrecognized, nor unappreciated. I may be your Kahn, but a Kahn is nothing without his people but a man with a title. It is you who are the blood of this city, and I am its heart. We exist together and must live together, as one!”

Again, they cheer, chanting his name. He waits for them to die down again. “There are those who do not see such things. They desire a return to the old ways. Oppression, fear, and death. These were the tools of Shao Kahn the Accursed. They are our enemies, and though they have tried to tear down what we have built, they have failed time and time again! Not because of me, but because of you! Because of your unfailing loyalty and commitment to this great city!”

He lowers his arms. “But there are those among us who do not contribute to our success. Parasites, vermin, wretches of society. Those who prey upon others. Those who seek not to contribute to others, but to take away for themselves. Those who have value for only one thing: to die and serve as examples for the rest.”

“That is why, my people, today I am rewarding your strength and perseverance with a grand spectacle! On this, the day of our feast with our shokan allies of Kuatan, I hereby declare the arena of Z’unkahrah open, and admittance shall be free for all!” The crowd goes wild, cheering uncontrollably. The guards keep them at bay. As they die down again, Kotal speaks, “For today, these thieves shall be put to the death! They will be given an honorable end to their dishonorable lives!"

Cao grits his teeth as the entire city of Z’unkahrah cheers—for his coming death. They are celebrating it. He punches the wall next to him, angered by their worship of Kotal Kahn. He doesn’t listen to the rest of his speech.

“Hell of a talker, that one,” Trevor says, picking his teeth with his nails.

“He’ll get what’s coming to him,” Cao mutters, already imagining the look on the Kahn’s face when the Black Dragon make their appearance.

The doors to the dungeons open and guards appear. The doors to Cao and Trevor’s cells are opened and they are taken from them and marched through a series of tunnels. Cao and Trevor share a look as they are brought into an armory.

The captain of the guard speaks. “By order of our great and merciful Emperor, you are to be granted one weapon of your choosing.”

Cao looks around the armory and sees many different kinds of tools—swords, axes, spears, shields, halberds, staves, knives…

“Only one?” Cao asks. The guard behind him punches him in the back of the head.

“Hearing problem, thief? Only one.”

Cao shoots him a nasty look before turning back to the weapons.

Yeah...no. Swords are not a grab and go weapon like you think. In order to wield it effectively Cao would have to use two hands at all times since he's a novice. Plus his strikes would be awkward and clumsy.

They aren't, especially two at once. Knives are incredibly bad weapons for actually wanting to kill someone

You know we could just go with spiked gauntlets like Kaito did once.

>>

Cao isn't sure what to pick. There are many options here...

He narrows it down to two choices. There is a strong-looking sword, with a decent weight and large handle, along with a protective crossguard, and a pair of tonfas made out of metal, with spikes at both ends.

He's never had any proper or formal training with either, but choosing one is better than having nothing...

Cao picks up the sword. Trevor approaches the table and picks up a pair of butterfly knives. "Heh... remind me of my old man," he says, striking them against each other and creating a few sparks.

"You've made your choices. Now get into the hallway," the guard captain orders.

Cao and Trevor march down side-by-side into the dark hallway.

"Don't sweat it, mate," Trevor says with a smile. "All we gotta do is last a few rounds until the calvalry arrives."

They end up in a small chamber with a stone and metal gate in front of them. It will rise when the time is right.

Trevor looks down at him. "You ever use one of those?" he says, pointing at the dadao.

"No."

"We got some time," Trevor says. "Could show you a thing or two."

Cao agrees. For the next two hours or so, Trevor helps him feel out his new sword: its weight, how to swing it, holding onto it properly, using one or both arms. Cao learns to use the weapon a bit more effectively, but as Trevor points out, there's no subsitute for experience.

"Who knows what's waiting out there, but whatever it is, just focus on not dying," he says. He slaps Cao across the shoulder. "You'll probably be fine."

Cao takes a deep breath. They can hear the crowd begin to roar and cheer. The arena stadium is filling up.

"Time to give 'em a show," Trevor says with a smile.

The gate opens up and they both walk out into the arena and hear the roar of the crowd. The area is massive, built large and square, with multiple levels on in which all of the civilians are watching and cheering from.

The center of the arena is dominated by six massive pillars with chains hanging from the top. The royal box where Kotal Kahn and his court sit is in the middle of one of the ends of the arena's stands, surrounded by gold and blazing fires. He also has guests; the shokan royalty are here.

Cao looks up at them as he enters the arena. Everyone, from royalty to peasants, stare down at him, many cheering, hollaring or booing.

They proceed to the center of the arena.

Kotal Kahn rises and speaks, his commanding and booming voice causing all others to quiet down. "Today, before men and the Elder Gods, I decree these two be put to death in the arena of Z'unkahrah! May they find honor in death!"

The crowd cheers again. A large gate on the other side of the arena opens and Cao and Trevor look on as their foe emerges.

A massive, coiling snake. It rears upwards, opening its mouth to reveal a set of large fangs, dripping with saliva and venom.

It sets its sight upon them and begins to close the distance.

Cao holds up his sword, feeling like a mouse in a cage staring down a normal-sized serpent. His grip on the sword tightens.

The crowd cheers as the snake closes the distance! It suddenly strikes, darting its head forward. Trevor and Cao both roll in opposite directions, dodging the attack. Cao rolls towards the giant snake, springing up to his feet and slicing upwards with his sword! The snake hisses loudly as he draws a large gash across its scales, bringing forth green blood.

>>45424008

As it turns its head to look at Cao, he tries kicking up some dirt, but it surges forward and headbutts him, knocking him to the dirt as it slides by. The bulk of the snake slides away from him, leaving him dazed as it heads for the center of the arena. Cao picks himself up and watches the snake pursue Trevor.

>>45424018
>>45424034

Trevor plays keepaway with the snake, hiding between the pillars, but isn't able to land any solid hits. Cao charges up to the side of the snake as the roaring crowd continues to ring in his ears. He tries to bring his sword down again but the snake's tail flips outwards and knocks him off his feet, tripping him. He isn't hurt, however.

>>45424049

Cao looks up and sees the tail about to fall down on top of him! He rolls to one side and backs up, trying to study the movement of the snake. It's deceptively fast for its size...

Just then, the snake's tail lashes out again, striking Cao in the chest! The speed and sharpness of its scales leaves Cao bleeding from the hard slap. He drops his sword and is sent flying through the air. The crowd goes wild!

Cao hits the dirt floor and rolls a bit. He shakes his head as the snake continues to focus on Trevor.

>>45424073

Cao goes for his sword and grabs it, immediately backing away. He knows the snake can only focus on one at a time. He waits for his opening...

Cao sees his opening and charges in, leaping up onto the snake's back! He runs along its body, towards the head, and chops at its eyes! The crowd cheers wildly as Cao slides down the snake's back, using his sword to slice down its hide as he goes! A nearly straight line of green blood appears as Cao runs down its back, dragging the blade behind him!

The snake rolls over and Cao jumps off, rolling in the dirt. The audience howls, cheers and boos all at once. The snake slaps Trevor away and looks back at Cao, its eyes blazing with the desire to kill him. It opens its mouth wide and dives downwards towards him!

The body of the serpent grows still, except for the head, which is subtly rocking a bit. Trevor runs over and cuts into it with his knives.

The dadao appears again, and again, and again, as Cao cuts his way out of the snake!

Trevor helps him and pulls him out and up to his feet. The crowd goes wild again as Cao stands up, covered in green blood.

He holds up his sword as Kotal Kahn looks down upon them with contempt. Reptile looks visibly upset, perhaps on the verge of tears.

He stands up and holds out his hands. "You have done well in slaying the serpent! But if you think so simple a trial is the end of your worries, you are wrong!"

He points at the beastmaster. "RELEASE THE TORMENTORS!"

The man nods, and throws two massive levers backwards.

Two more gates open and roars can be heard from each. Cao's blood runs cold. He has heard of the tormentors... Massive, rancor-like beasts with horns, scales as hard as stone!

What's even worse, is that both are male, and it is mating season, driving them into a horrible, crazed frenzy!

They charge forth from their prisons, roaring and clawing at the stone! They spy the body of the snake and the two humans and identify their prey!

But this is not the day Cao dies!

He shouts as he lands on the monster's head. He turns and grabs both of its horns as he falls, yanking on the tormentor, forcing its head back as he digs his heels into the sides of the creature's head.

Cao summons strength he does not know and he turns the beast, guiding it under the falling pillar!

The tormentor roars in pain as the stone falls down upon it, smashing it. Cao jumps off and rolls in the dirt as dust is kicked up in a massive cloud. He turns around and watches the dust clear; the tormentor is dead, having sown the seeds of its own destruction.

The crowd cheers even louder as Kotal Kahn's fists slam the arms of his chair. He stands up and is about to proclaim the guards to swarm into the arena when there is a massive explosion along one of the lower walls!

Cao and Trevor both look on as none other than the Black Dragon storm inside, spraying machine gun fire at the remaining tormentor. A portal opens up, golden and orange in color, and Cao watches as some kind of treaded vehicle emerges. It turns its head towards the tormentor and fires, creating an explosion that blows that creature's arm clean off.

As the crowd panics and attempts to escape the stands, Kotal Kahn begins barking orders and preparing to counter-attack. Trevor runs to rejoin his clanmates and Cao is faced with a choice.

Cao runs up to the sword and yanks on it with all his strength! He pulls it out of the dead flesh and falls onto his back. Scrambling to his feet, he runs away towards the Black Dragon to rejoin with Trevor.

It seems that they opened a portal outside the arena and initially attacked from it after pouring out in force. Cao watches them fire some kind of rocket at the stands, distracting the guards and keeping them at bay.

Trevor runs up to the portal and jumps inside alongside other strange warriors. Cao watches them and realizes that he can jump into the portal or run out into the city, abandonning them.

Cao throws caution to the wind and leaps through the portal.

He screams as he falls through a vortex, carried across time and space, feeling hot and cold at the same time. He is violently ejected outwards into the desert sand.

Trevor is there and he pulls Cao up to his feet. "You alright?" he asks. He looks around and sees they are in some kind of desert, with an opening nearby in a rockface that leads downwards. There are guards posted outside.

Trevor walks him towards the opening and brings him down into a series of twisting mine tunnels that look long abandonned, but recently renovated, with newly-placed technology and all manner of things Cao doesn't quite understand. The tunnels are well lit with electronic lights on the ceiling.

"Where are we going?" Cao asks Trevor.

"To see the big man," he replies. "He's the one who wanted to talk to you in the first place."

They approach a large series of doors and Trevor pushes them open. Inside is some kind of command center, with lots of things Cao doesn't immediately understand: computers, screens displaying all sorts of information and holographic projections.

At the heart of this technological chamber is a man in a black cloak. Strapped to his back are two massive hookswords. He turns around and Cao stops as he sees the man's skin, what little of it can be seen, is horrifically burnt and scarred. He wears a metal mask that covers the entirety of his face and head, with a metal cord leading down his chest.

"Kabal," Trevor says as they walk in, getting the man's attention. "Is Kano back yet?"

"No," the man replies, his voice filtered and mechanical.

"Alright. I'm gettin' a drink. You want one?" he asks Cao as he walks towards a large white square object.

Cao looks around the room, seeing strange figures with strange clothing. The man in front of him continues to stare from behind his mask.

Cao can hear his filtered breaths.

"Do you need that mask to live?" Cao asks him.

Kabal lets out a chuckle. "Perhaps you'd like to see," he says, reaching up to take off the mask. Cao gets a brief glimpse of the horror that lies beneath before Trevor runs up and stops him.

"Woah, woah! No need for that! Hey, come on, there's no need for that!"

Kabal laughs again and places it back on his face as he turns around and heads towards a computer display. Trevor hands Cao a cold bottle as he drinks from his own.

"Tell me about that guy; why's he wear that?" Cao asks.

"Don't ask, mate, you really don't wanna know."

Cao looks at the bottle. It has a red and blue label on it. He tastes it and swishes it around a bit. It has a very bitter aftertaste. "What is this?" he asks with an odd look.

"Melbourne Bitter," Trevor says with a laugh, downing more from his bottle. "Drink up! You know how hard it is to smuggle this shit to Outworld?" He takes another swig.

"Outworld? I thought this would be Earthrealm..." Cao says.

"Nah, but we go there a lot. We're from there, after all. Home sweet home 'n all."

Cao takes another drink as he inspects the strange technology around him, poking it and asking Trevor questions. "What's this? What's this do? The hell is this thing?"

Trevor answers to the best of his abilities but then is interrupted by a woman grabbing Cao's shoulder, turning him around and holding a knife to his neck. "What're you touching my things for?" she demands to know.

"Come off it, Kira," Trevor says to her. "He's new."

She looks back at Cao and gets a mischevious look on her face. "Ahh... Fresh meat, eh?"

Cao casually takes a sip of the bitter drink.

"He's the thief that stole from Kaito," Trevor says. Cao looks on the table and picks up a koin. Kira holds her knife back up.

"That's mine," she says.

Cao holds it out to her. She reaches for it but then he uses his fingers to twirl it around his fingers. The redhead cocks a brow as she watches him drop it onto his other hand and start spinning it on that one.

"He's damn good in a fight, too," Trevor says to her. "Took out two big monsters in the Kahn's arena 'fore we got busted outta there."

"Well, that we'll have to see," Kira says. "Welcome to the team, new guy. Try not to get stabbed."

She gently pushes the knife up to his throat. "Unless, of course, you're into that kind of thing," she adds with a wink.

"Kira!" a man calls out from across the room as he enters. The three of them look and see a blonde man walk in wearing a hoodie. "Who's that?" he points at Cao.

"New blood," Kira says, putting her knife away. She saunters away from Cao, swinging her hips a bit as she leaves the room. The man with the hood gives Cao a single look before following after her.

"That one's Kobra," Trevor says. "Right bloody dipstick, he is. Real up himself."

Trevor takes another drink and looks at one of the nearby screens.

Cao takes advantage of the moment and pockets the gold koin.

Cao approaches Kabal again. "So... What do you do around here, exactly?"

"I'm second in command," Kabal replies, not looking at Cao, diverting his attention to the screen. "I don't have much time to talk, kid. The Black Dragon doesn't run itself."

Trevor puts an arm around Cao and walks him away. "He's rough around the edges but he'll open up once he thinks you're valuable. I wouldn't worry about it too much, shorty."

"Enough with the height," Cao mutters as he downs the last bit of his drink. He sets the empty bottle down on a table. He's not sure he liked it very much but he appreciates the drink.

Just then there is a bustle from outside the command center. Cao and Trevor both turn as the doors open back up. In walks a man laden with cybernetic augmentations; his right eye is completely covered with a mechanical cybernetic replacement and there is a glowing orb embedded in his chest. He is covered with knives and sharp, stabbing instruments. Grenades and other weapons hang from his belt.

"We got it," he announces with a smile as everyone in the command center turns to face him. He approaches a metal table and places a silvery case upon it. He flips two switches and opens it up, revealing a golden, glowing stone inside.

Kabal walks around to look at it. "Kotal Kahn's portal stone," he says.

"The treasure of his people, alright, and worth an Emperor's ransom," Kano laughs. He looks around the room and his smile fades as he focuses on Cao.

A red laser emerges from his cybernetic eye and focuses on Cao's forehead; it is purely light and harmless, but Cao can't help but feel as though it could be more if he so chose.

"Who let in the ankle biter?" Kano asks.

"How are you made out of metal?" Cao asks.

"You also invited me," Cao says.

"I did? Well, forgive me for not thinkin' the small boy here is the one who stole from Kaito." Kano spits as he says the man's name. "But you're the one, eh?"

"That he is," Trevor replies.

Kano points a finger at him. "Was I talkin' to you, boy? Shut it." Trevor scowls a bit as Kano turns his attention back to Cao. "Now then... I busted you out, so you owe me. You'd be dead in that arena if I hadn't sent me boy here in with you or attacked the arena. So you're gonna pay me back for the investment, eh?"

Cao looks around the room at the others, finding them all staring at him. Cutthroats, murderers, thieves.

Cao considers his words. It certainly wouldn't hurt to be an informant, so long as he's getting paid for it... "What kind of information?" Cao asks.

"Our spies aren't very good. They don't blend into Outworld so well. But you obviously know the city well, like the back of your hand I'd wager. We want you on our side, givin' reliable information. Movements on the Kahn, parties, holidays, whatever the hell that guy's up to."

"I can't go back to the city," Cao says. "I'm wanted there. Kotal Kahn wants my head on a plate."

Kano chuckles. "As if that's ever stopped me."

He takes something out of his pocket and slides it accross the table. It seems like some kind of wrist-gauntlet. "What is this?"

"It's a holographic disguise generator," Kano says. "New-fangled tech. Not perfect but it works most of the time."

Cao picks it up and looks it over. "I don't understand," he says.

"It makes you look like other people," Trevor explains. "...You know, like, uh, magic."

Kano folds his arms. "All you need to do it point it at somebody and it'll copy them. You'll be hidden perfectly... mostly perfectly, anyway. It's a bit wonky here and there so don't expect to be able to keep it active for too long. It's also got limited range. Plus, if the person you copy sees you, it's pretty much over. Doesn't change your voice, either."

Cao looks it over. If it can truly do everything he's saying, then there's almost nowhere he couldn't go in the city...

"Then what are your terms?" Cao asks.

"If you want the device, there's somethin' I need you to fetch for me," Kano says. "An ancient treasure lost in a great dungeon. Some old Outworld legend---doesn't matter to me. I want it so I can sell it."

"And just what might that be, exactly?" Cao asks.

Kano presses a few buttons on the console and a holographic map of Z'unkahrah is displayed. Cao looks at it with wide eyes, amazed at its detail.

"This is the city as you know it," Kano says, before pressing another button. A series of tunnels, chambers and all sorts of dungeons begin to appear underneath it. "And this is what's under it: the tunnels, ruins and remains of every civilization that city was built on top of."

He points at a large one underneath Kotal Kahn's palace. "We couldn't get down there in the time it took for our raid on the palace. We had to be in and out. But I'm bettin' you could get in there and get something for us."

"Get what?"

Now, Kabal speaks. "That chamber is the one thing that remains of Shao Kahn's citadel. The entire building was destroyed by Kaito--" Kano spits "--twenty years ago, but the very bottom of it was sent back to Outworld. Kotal Kahn built atop it but didn't demolish it."

Kano folds his arms. "We have a very interested client we do frequent business with who wants something down there. Something only you can get. So, if you get it for me, I'll let you keep the holographic device, and give you a cut of the fortune he's willing to pay me for it... And, of course, we'll continue our business from there."

Cao slips the device around his wrist. "Alright, I agree. I'll get you that item, but I want to know what it is and what I'm getting paid for it."

Kano sits back a bit. "Well, that's Shao Kahn's personal chambers. The place he never let anyone into. He had a bed room and a throne room, sure, but he didn't perform his dark rites down there or any of his sorcerous enchantments. Now, me, I don't give too much a damn about magic---but there's somethin' down there that my client wants." Kano leans forward. "The third, and only remaining, wrath hammer of Shao Kahn, along with a suit of armor the old Emperor was forging. Some I'm told, anyway. You get the hammer and the suit, specifically the helmet---don't know why the guy wants the damned helmet so much---and the money's yours. A thousand gold."

Cao's eyes widen. That's more than enough money to ship him and his sisters off to someplace new... And just stealing a hammer and some old helmet? That's too easy.

"Something tells me there's a catch," Cao says.

"The guardian," Kano replies. "The place is said to be kept by some kind of powerful magic and a great guardian. But who believes in legend and rumor, eh?" he chuckles.

"So, does this mean I'm in the Black Dragon now?"

Chuckles can be heard throughout the room. Kano laughs a bit harder.

"You're an informant, not an initiate," Kabal says.

"But hey, kid's got guts," Kano says. "Maybe if you do this job, we'll let you take the entrance test."

"How will I contact you once I'm in the city? Once I've finished the job, I mean."

Kano snaps a finger and someone hands Cao a radio. He looks at it as though he doesn't know what it is, which he doesn't. Trevor tell him quickly how to use it.

"We're the only ones in Outworld who use these kinds of radios," Kano says. "Plus, we've got a scrambled encryption. Nobody else will listen in."

Again, he doesn't know what those words mean, but Cao puts away the radio on his belt.

"When do I return?" Cao asks.

Kano points towards the door. "We'll have someone portal you home. That'll do."

Cao asks Trevor for some help. He takes Cao over to another woman, one with short black hair, purple armor and two swords at her hips.

"This is Tasia," Trevor says. "Look, but don't touch if you're interested in keeping your hands."

Trevor points Cao's arm at Tasia and tells him what buttons to press. Cao does this and a shimmering blue field covers him after a scanning bar fills up. Cao watches as a holographic field cloaks him and projects a perfect image of Tasia around him.

"Wow!" Cao says, looking at himself. It's a completely perfect image.

"Just don't let anyone touch you," Trevor says, poking Cao. The image distorts and shimmers a bit, revealing Cao, before it readjusts. "Be careful with it."

"Pretty good looking," Tasia says with a smile, cocking her hips to one side. "Not as good as the real thing, though."

Cao turns off the device.

After enjoying a meal courtesy of Trevor (an MRE stolen from the OWEA) Cao is escorted back through the portal and ends up within the aqueducts of Z'unkahrah. From here, Cao parts way with them.

"See you around, mate," Trevor says, leaving Cao before walking back through the portal that vanishes.

Cao turns back and looks out at the tunnels before him. They're still pretty busted up from the fight between the fire and earth elementals, but he can find his way from here.

Cao begins to search the aqueducts for his sisters, seeing if they may have relocated to a new home somewhere down here. He scours the usual places, finding no signs of them.

'I hope nothing's happened to them...' he thinks to himself.

As he rounds a corner, he suddenly hears a strange noise. He turns around, looking for its source, but finds nothing. His eyes narrow as he approaches it.

Suddenly, a cloud of bats rounds the corner, all flying at him, screeching! Cao shouts in surprise and falls backwards.

Something amongst the bats forms, a heavier, solid form, and he suddenly finds himself pinned underneath none other than Nitara.

"There you are..." she says. "I've been looking all over the city for you, my little thief."

"Ni---Nitara! What? But why---"

She puts a finger to his lips, silencing him. "Shhh. I'm just glad I found you. It's time to cash in that favor you owe me."

"What?" he asks, sweating a bit. "Wh-what is it?"

Her green eyes brighten and she smiles. "I need you to steal something from the shokan at the palace for me."

I'll call it there for this thread, folks. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. I had a lot of fun writing today's scenarios and characters.

I'll be around until the thread ends to answer any comments or questions. Until next weekend, that'll be all for Mortal Kombat Thief Quest.

Again, thanks for playing.

FUCKING
WHY
DOES EVERYONE WANT US TO NICK SOMETHING
>>
>>45432916
Such is the life of a thief indebted to people
>>
>>45432952
Cao nicked money from Kaito himself (because he didn't know who he was) and got away with it, so now everyone wants him to grab something.
>>

Thanks, Damashi! I was hoping to see more of Ashrah, but I guess that is the way the dice fall.

I promise you Anon, she didn't die in vain. Maybe one day we can save her and restore her to what she truly wanted to be and rid her of her demonic nature.
>>
>>45432912
What's Kano think of Cao?
>>
>>45432912
That was a good one. I got a kick out of how so many people just wanted to jerk us around.
>>
>>45433038
I still feel like you killed her off too easily, but eh
>>
>>45433050

Kano only paid him a second glance when he heard that he had stolen from Kaito. He wants to see Cao prove himself on this job, because Kano is always looking for an angle and Cao might prove to be a valuable asset for the Black Dragon.

I figured some people would be. I wanted to make the fight longer, too, but I was in the moment and I really wanted to establish D'Vorah's lethality and her quick, efficient killing methods.

There is a food chain, and D'Vorah is a top predator.

But maybe we can save her.

I don't know how many people liked her---she seemed a bit too paragon for Cao.
>>
>>45433452
She helped us when she didn't need to, I bet for Cao that actually means something
>>
>>45433452
Sucks to see someone killed off bad or good but I'm fine with it, just means that d'vorah isn't to be fucked with

I don't think Cao would want to see her dead to be frank, he seems pretty grey. Not completely heartless but not completely little goody two shoes

Well, I think that, story-wise, that's what Ashrah can serve as for Cao, a path to becoming selfless, but only if the players want to pursue such an option. She can serve as an example or, possibly, a quest in the future to save her soul.

>>45433518

I don't think he would either. Cao doesn't like feeling responsible for others, or guilty. Despite his fear of being alone, he's also afraid of getting too close to others.
>>
Say HombrewAnon are you around? If you've made any changes at all I should have more time to test for you soon. Maybe.
>>
I hope you guys enjoyed today's quest and getting to meet some new people.

For those of you who have been patient, come next quest, we'll be meeting the shokan with Cao for the first time.
>>
>>45434384

You know I've posted this for a while and had it for longer but this is actually the first time I ever noticed those tiny little faces he drew on some of those characters.

Cheeky.
