Cao has never been outside the city farther than the gates. Though his resolve to save Sanra from the vile, blood-sucking fiend holding her is strong, he cannot help but find his heart pounding faster and nervous sweat running down his brow. It doesn't help that this place, the Living Forest, is terribly foreboding: dark, misty, full of strange and unnatural shapes. He's used to the geometry of a city, with walls, people, wagons, markets, but this place has none of those.

Well, he can glimpse some people, but they are corpses wrapped in vines. He can tell that Draken alongside him, another thief and one he doesn't particularly care for, feels much the same way. Draken glances nervously around in all directions. "This place isn't right," he says. "Look!"

Cao looks in the direction he points and sees a tree with a face shaped out of its wood. "It looked at me!" Draken says. "It looked right at me!"

"Well, it's not moving now," Cao says. Off in the distance, they both hear a strange roaring sound, and it causes Draken to jump.

Cao can't blame him much for being as on edge as he is; after all, they are here to find a vampire's lair. It is daylight, so this 'Nitara' should be asleep, if Countess Mira's words were true. But where could her cave be?

Cao and Draken both stick to the primary path, walking along a somewhat well-trodden dirt road. The thick mist between the trees and the strange eyes of the trees, some of them glowing, continue to unnerve him. Who knows what kinds of beasts or men lurk in this forest. Mira said that her sister Nitara preys upon things in this forest; he can only imagine what sustenence they offer.

Draken, meanwhile, is shaking more and more with each and every step. They pass by a dead body at the base of a tree, covered in roots growing through his corpse. Insects run about his flesh, and to their horror, he twitches.

"That's it! I'm going back!" Draken declares, turning around.

Cao reaches out and grabs his clothing at the neck. "No, you aren't! Or I'll knock you out and drag you."

"Nobody is worth being eaten by a tree!" he says.

Cao turns him around and looks him in the eyes. "Try and remember that this is your fault that we're out here in the first place. You created this problem, Draken."

"It was just a heist!" he protests.

Cao sighs and tries to put on his best reassuring look. "I know that. But now we're out here trying to solve this problem. We're in this together, whether you like it or not."

Draken seems to calm down a bit, reminded that he is not alone. "Okay, okay..." he breathes a few times. "Alright, I'm ready."

"And the trees can't eat you if you don't go near them, I think. We haven't seen any of them uprooting and chasing us." Of course, were that to happen, Cao wouldn't be entirely surprised with how strange this place is...

Cao lets go of him and turns around, continuing to walk down the primary path. He looks off in the distance, towards a large flowing river off the trail, and his eyes narrow as he sees an orange glow.

"What is that?" Draken asks. "Is that fire?"

"Campfire, I think," Cao says.

"Do you... think it might belong to someone friendly?" he asks.

Cao and Draken crouch low to the ground and move closer. As they do, Cao can begin to make out the shape of a female, wearing all white. She is sitting on her knees in front of the fire with her hands in her lap, her eyes closed apparently meditating... As Cao gets near, he can see she is quite beautiful, with raven-dark hair pulled behind her shoulders.

Just then, Cao steps on a twig and it breaks with a loud snap.

He's never quite had to sneak in a forest before, after all...

The woman's eyes shoot open and she's on her feet in an instant, placing a white hat upon her head and drawing a strange-looking sword, one that curves and waves like a snake or water. She holds it in one hand and holds up her other hand, which begins to glow with bright white light, shining outwards in a beam to illuminate wherever she points her hand. Draken and Cao both hide behind a fallen tree.

"Show yourself!" she demands. "If you think you have found easy prey, come forth and see the truth!"

Slowly, Cao stands up with his arms raised and hands open. The woman shines her light upon him and gives him a strange look. "Bandits prowling the woods? No... you look more like a beggar."

She stops shining the light. "You look thin. Would you like some food?"

Cao returns the strange look. He can't help but notice that she hasn't put away her sword yet...

Draken peeks over the log, and they both look at her fire; she appears to be cooking something in a pot over the flames. It smells... good, actually.

Draken moves to stand and walk over the log, but Cao stops him, distrustful of generocity in a place like this. The woman observes them carefully; she is standing casually, but with the speed she initially got ready to attack, he does not doubt that she could attack at any time...

Cao looks down at her sword. "If you want to talk, put down your weapon first."

She cocks her head a bit, but then slides the weapon into her belt, confidently standing on the other side of the fire. Cao doesn't move past the log yet, nor does he let go of Draken.

"There is warmth by the fire," the woman invites, taking a seat. Her words are measured and intelligent, calm too. As before, she sits on her knees, with her hands in her lap. "The food is very good. We could share it."

"I'm looking for a cave," Cao says, staying focused and keeping his distance.

"I don't know any," she replies. "I can see you do not trust me... It is a difficult thing, to trust a stranger. But perhaps you would like to sit and speak, and then I will not seem so strange."

Cao looks at her, searching for any kind of deception. It is daylight, so she can't be Nitara... but the shroud of the forest is very thick, and it could all be a trick of some kind...

He slowly steps over the log and sits on the other side. Draken does the same. The woman in white reaches for a wooden bowl and scoops some of the stew into it before standing up and handing it out to him.

Cao warrily takes it into his hand and smells it. It smells delicious... The woman sits down and looks at him expectently, with a small smile on her face. "Go on," she urges.

Cao hesitates. What if this is a trap? What if she is some kind of witch? She said he was skinny... is she trying to fatten him up?

Cao puts it away from his mouth. "I... I don't know," he says.

She takes off her hat and sets it to her side. "Would you like me to eat some so you can see that it is not poisoned?"

"It's not that," Cao says. "I am... not used to free food being offered so openly."

She pauses for a moment. "So, you are a beggar after all."

Cao is about to protest when Draken reaches for the food. "If you won't have it, I will!" he says.

Cao shrugs and hands it to Draken, who eagerly gobbles it up. The younger thief watches him carefully for any sign of strangeness. As he eats it, his eyes go wide. "This is amazing!" he says, gobbling more of it down, scarfing half the bowl in one go. "Delicious!"

"Thank you," she says, preparing another bowl. "And you?" she offers it to Cao.

He reaches out and takes it, and after a moment, he puts it to his lips and drinks the broth and eats some of the meat.

His eyes widen a bit. It's the most delicious thing he's ever had in his life. He eats eagerly, wishing he could share it with Hua and Sanra.

Sanra... He can't forget why he is here. He finishes his bowl, feeling the warmth in his belly. He can't help but feel a bit relaxed.

"My name is Ashrah," she says with a smile. "I am glad you are not thieves come to steal from me."

Cao blinks a few times. 'Thieves, yes, but not looking for you,' he thinks. He finishes his bowl. "Can I... have another?" he asks.

"Please, help yourselves," she offers.

Draken and Cao both go for the pot and fight for the first second helping. Within minutes, they are both full. Cao can't remember the last time he ate to fullness... but at the same time, he can't help but feel like a condemned man who has eaten his final meal.

Ashrah, meanwhile, has sat quietly and waited for them to finish. He finds her strange... he's never heard of a beautiful woman giving out food for free in a forest such as this.

"Uh, my name is Cao..." he says to her. "Erm... thank you."

"It is my pleasure," she says.

"But we should probably get going," he says as he stands up. Draken looks up at him.

"What? Hey, she's friendly! We should ask for her help!"

"No," Cao says. "We don't---"

"What help?" Ashrah asks.

Before Cao can stop him, Draken reveals, "We're looking for a vampire."

"Vampire..." she says. "You don't say..."

"We were just leaving!" Cao says, hoisting Draken up to his feet.

"I can help you," Ashrah says. "Freely. I hunt such things as vampires."

"Perfect!" Draken says.

Cao remembers Mira's words---she doesn't want Nitara dead.

"We can't, sorry," Cao says to her. "It was nice meeting you, though!"

"Wait," Ashrah and Draken both say. Ashrah stands up. "You will need help if you are going off to face a vampire. You do not look like warriors. I have slain many dark beasts and demons with my kriss blade. I implore you to let me help you; as I said, I have no price. Slaying the creature is price enough."

"Alright, both of you, stop!" Cao says. "I need the vampire alive!"

"We do?" Draken says.

Cao turns towards the woman in white and says, "I can't accept your offer. I need her alive and I can't have you killing her."

Ashrah looks concerned at Cao. "It seems you have found yourself in trouble, young one," she says. "I am a warrior on the path of light. I wish to help you out of the cause of righteousness."

"There, see? She'll help us for free!" Draken says, but Cao pushes him back a bit.

"Well, if you're going to kill the vampire, I cannot accept your help," he says.

Then, he pauses.

"Unless, there is another vampire you'd be willing to kill..."

Ashrah's brow rises. "Any vampire is a creature worthy of death. They prey upon others, taking their life essence for their own. Such a creature is not worthy of life."

Cao thinks for a moment.

Cao doesn't like trusting a stranger, but this woman did give him good food and seems noble...

"My sister is the captive of a vampire. She's the treasurer for Kotal Kahn; Countess Mira. She sent me out here to steal an amulet from her sister, a vampire named Nitara. She lives in a cave somewhere around here. Retrieving it is the only way I can get my sister back." Cao elbows Draken softly in the ribs. "He's here because it's all his fault."

"Hey," he says.

Ashrah is silent for a moment as she listens. "It is not a good position, to be on the end of a vampire's bargain," she says. "There is little hope that such a vile thing will keep her word."

She takes out her strange, wavey sword. "But do you see this blade? It is a bane to all things evil. Creatures of darkness and terror... Demons, vampires, wraiths, undead. I have dedicated myself to purging such creatures."

"Why?" Cao asks.

"I am on a quest of redemption," she says, "for black stains upon my past. But it matters little. If you allow me, I will help you."

Cao considers her words. He's never put much stock into others, but then again, he's also never met a warrior of light before. Still, he can't help but feel that accepting her help could be dangerous, given that Sanra's life is on the line...

"If I ask for your help, what do you plan to do?"

"I have a great desire to slay the vampires, but I do not wish to see your sister harmed. If her safety and release will only be granted by sparing her sister and giving her the amulet, then we can find this vampire, defeat her, keep her alive and take it from her. Then, once we deliver it to her sister and secure your sister's life, I will slay the countess."

Cao has to admit, that sounds good... But then the first thing to do would be to find Nitara.

Ashrah puts away her sword. "Do we have an accord?"

"Only if we don't kill Nitara," Cao says. "And if you're going to kill the countess, it won't be until after I have my sister back."

"Agreed," Ashrah says. "I do not enjoy letting the vampire live, but if I must, I shall."

She holds out her hand and after a moment, Cao shakes it.

"Great, can we get going now please?" Draken says. "I don't like being out here any longer than I need to be."

"What do you know of vampires? Do they need water?"

"The moroi belong to a dead realm. Their race is nearly extinct, but those who remain have preyed upon the blood of the innocent for a long time."

They begin walking along the river's edge.

"But they also have other needs... they are still physical beings. They can eat food and drink water."

"Do they take mates of mortal men?" Draken asks. Ashrah shoots him an annoyed look. "Sorry, I just... heard stories."

"They make pawns of foolish mortals," she says. "They have lived long, sustained by the life essence of their victims. Some of them have lived for thousands of years."

They walk in silence for a while. Every now and then, Cao casts a look to her sword.

"So... where did you get that?" he asks.

"It was a gift," she replies. "Once, I was not quite like I am now. I was very... different." She closes her eyes and lets out a steadying breath. "But now I use this blade to purify my soul. With every evil being slain, I remove the darkness that once imprisoned me from my soul."

Cao lets out a soft whistle. Quite an interesting weapon...

They walk past the trees, some of whom have twisted faces; one of them is twisted into a smile and another is in a perpetual scowl.

They come to a path in the river where it splits off into two forks. One drains downwards, into a large lake, and the other continues on into a more less-travelled part of the forest, where the vegetation grows thicker and the vines more invasive.

Ashrah considers which path to take as Cao and Draken look on.

As they avoid the lake and head towards the darker portion of the forest, Cao nearly trips over a vine. Ashrah reaches out and grabs him by the arm, holding him up.

Cao looks down over the hidden ledge and peers down towards a cave. He blinks a few times.

"Hey, I think I found it!" he says. Ashrah helps him up and the three of them peer down at the entrance.

There doesn't appear to be anything that directly indicates a person lives here... but it is the first cave they have come upon.

"It could be her hair," Ashrah says. "We will need to be cautious."

Draken softly coughs. "So... Who's leading?"

Cao isn't certain how much he can trust Ashrah to not sneak up on the vampire, or Draken to not be a coward. He decides he'll go on his own.

"I'll scout ahead," he says. "If I find the vampire, I'll come right back." Of course, if she is asleep, he could always steal the amulet and be done with it...

"Are you certain?" Ashrah asks, concerned. "You needn't put yourself at risk."

"By all means," Draken invites. "After you. I'll wait here with Ashrah."

Cao shoots him a look but then nods at Ashrah. "I'll be safe. I'm good at sneaking. I'm not sure how good you are at it, with an outfit like that..."

She nods. "I'll be ready to charge in and help you, should you need it," she tells him, drawing her sword. "I will be listening."

Draken gives him a thumbs-up as Cao climbs down the rocks and touches down at the opening of the cave.

He moves inside. He's going to save his sister, no matter what. Even if he is walking into the lair of a vampire...

Cao remains quiet as he sneaks through the cave. Here, there are no pesky sticks or vines to step on or trip over. It's more like the aqueducts back home.

He stops when he sees a skull on the ground. He nervously swallows a lump in his throat and keeps going.

He sees light up ahead. Silently, he rounds a corner and finds some kind of shrine with candles everywhere. Large statues of robes, skeletal figures can be seen.

In the heart of the chamber lies a large altar: a stone coffin. Cao nervously approaches it.

Cao looks around the chamber. He doesn't find anything of much interest, but upon opening a chest, he discovers some treasure. There is a bag of koins here, though not many, along with some other things that look like they come from many different places. He takes out a jewelry box and opens it, discovering a pair of solid gold earings of immaculate artistry.

Cao doesn't take anything. Suddenly, his ears pick up the sound of beating wings!

He hides behind a shelf as someone flies into the chamber from the darkness. She touches down and folds her wings behind her back. Cao peers out and sees who can be none other than Nitara. She is strange and deadly-looking, yet quite appealing in a way; her clothing is revealing and her body is toned and acrobatic. Her wings are large, but when she folds them into her body, they can take up a small amount of space.

Her choice of clothing is odd, but he can spy knives and other blades on her person.

She stretches her arms and lets out a soft yawn, approaching the altar coffin.

As she moves her head back, Cao's eyes widen. He spies a black amulet hanging from a choker around her neck.

She pauses and sniffs the air a bit. Cao panicks---can she smell him?

She looks him up and down, surprised. "Well, well, well? What have we here, hm?" She sounds amused and she wears a smile on her face. "Are you lost, little boy?"

Cao backs up to the cave wall as he stares back at her, his heart pounding. Sweat runs down his brow as she delights in his expression; he must seem like a cornered mouse to her.

Nitara's smile grows as she brings up a hand and traces it around his face. "Just when I was about to give up on hope of being entertained today," she says. Cao can't help but shiver a bit as he feels her surprisingly warm fingers on his skin. "I've been so terribly bored lately..."

She cups his chin and lifts it with a finger, staring down at him with beautiful green eyes. "Do you think you can entertain me?"

Cao swallows. "Th-that depends," he says.

"On what?" she asks, continually amused.

"If you back up, I think I can," he says.

She lets out a soft chuckle. "Oh, are you going to run?" Her eyes beam. "Am I going to have to have to chase you? Maybe take you to the ground...?"

She steps back, curious and excited by the idea of playing a game with him. He hears her sultry, strange tone of voice and gets the idea that she longs for a break in her boredom; unfortunately, he appears to be that break.

She takes another step back and stands seductively, maintaining eye contact all the while. "Well? Are you going to run?" she asks. "Or perhaps you like what you see?" She accents her last sentence with a wink.

Cao looks on a nearby table and spies two koins. He picks them up, one in each hand, and begins to twirl them around his fingers! He spins them and begins performing ambidextrous tricks! He hopes to distract her and maybe earn an opening...

Nitara chuckles again. "You certainly have quick fingers," she compliments him. He does a few more and Nitara watches, fascinated and amused. "Is there anything else?" she asks after a moment and Cao realizes she isn't quite the kind of gal who is impressed by koin flipping.

Cao stops performing and sighs, setting the koins back down. He sits down on the ground with his arms folded, trying to close himself off from any further advances. "I... I came here for a reason," he tells her. "Maybe you could ask your sister to release mine."

She gets down on all fours and slowly approaches Cao. "Do tell me more..." she says.

"Uh..." Cao says, losing his train of thought as he watches the amulet dangle in front of her impressive assets. "I, uh... She has my sister as her captive. She wanted me to come here, and... and take something from you."

Nitara stops moving. "Oh... you don't say." She lays on the ground, one hand holding up her head, the other hand draped over her waist and hips. She's got a strange air about her; one of a bored hedonist looking for a new pleasure.

"I think I can guess what that might be," she says, her eyes darting down to the amulet. "Would you like to try taking it?"

Again, she accents her point by ever-so-slightly breathing, thrusting her chest out. Sweat continues to run down his forehead.

Cao tries to form words, but all that can come out is a series of distracted slurs. "I, uh, that is... Ahem, I don't... I..."

He can't stop staring at the glinting amulet... or her chest right beneath it. Nitara is truly amused by his flustered nature, biting her lip to contain her mirth. "You seem a bit nervous," she says. "Do I make you uncomfortable? You are in my home, it's my responsibility to be a hospital host."

Cao shuts his eyes and looks away. "Look! My... my sister is in danger! Your sister is Kotal Kahn's treasurer and she has her and is... feeding on her!"

"Well, that is what we do," she says nonchalantly.

"She's going to kill her if I come back empty-handed! I said I would come here and take the amulet from you, but you were supposed to be..."

"What, hm?"

"Asleep," Cao says, still looking away.

"Yes, I had a bit of a late morning..." Nitara says, yawning a bit. "I am rather tired, now that you mention it."

She lies on her back and stretches a bit, yawning once more. "But, it gets so cold in that coffin... Maybe if I had someone to share it with..."

Cao stutters some more and she rolls onto her stomach and looks at him. "Alright, enough torture," she laughs. She stands up and walks away. Cao opens an eye and looks at her as she opens a nearby shelf, looking for something.

Is she fetching something for him? Some kind of weapon? Is she going to kill him, enslave him?

"Now, where did I put it..." she muses. "One moment, just be patient for me..."

Cao swallows as he sits, staring uncomfortably at her backside. She opens a drawer, bending over a bit. His brow shoots up as he nervously fidgits.

"Ah-hah, there you are," she says. She turns and tosses something at him. So distracted was he that he doesn't react and it hits him in the face.

He shakes his head and looks down into his lap. It's... her amulet?!

He looks up at her in disbelief, but then sees her amulet is still around her neck!

"What? How? I don't---"

"It's a dummy, dummy," she says with an amused smile. "A dud. A fake. Nothing special about it."

He holds it up in front of her, looking at it compared to her own. It's exactly alike.

"Why?" he asks.

"Because I find it funny," Nitara says. "My sister, still scheming for my amulet... and she is the Emperor's treasurer, you say? How interesting..."

Nitara walks over to her coffin and places a hand on its stone surface. "Go on, get out of here. I've had my fun."

"You're not going to... eat me?" Cao asks.

She looks over her shoulder. "Do you want me to?"

"No! No, I mean, I just don't understand, uh, I--"

Nitara giggles. "You're too sweet for a tasty treat right now. I'd rather save you for later."

Cao gets back up to his feet and starts edging towards the exit to the cave. "I don't... I don't know what to say..."

"Nothing is needed at the moment," she says. Her eyes flash a bit. "But just so you know, you'll owe me."

"What? Owe you what?"

"I'll collect when I see fit," she says. "Now run along, little boy... I'll see you soon."

She blows him a kiss before opening the coffin and climbing inside, one leg at a time.

Cao is left stupified.

He runs out of the cave with the false amulet clutched tightly in one hand, nearly running into Draken and Ashrah.

"Cao! What happened?" Ashrah asks. "We were just about to go in and look for you!"

"The amulet!" Draken says. "You, you have it!"

He runs past and Draken follows, with Ashrah pausing for a moment. She then decides to follow them.

As Cao runs, he tries to get the images of Nitara out of his mind. She must have been using some kind of mind control on him... Yes, that's it, mind control... She was enchanting him with some kind of strange, feminine magic...

He shakes his head and runs back up to the river and follows it to Ashrah's old camp. From there, they reach the main road of the Living Forest.

Cao takes a moment to let them catch up. He could keep running, but he doesn't want to be out here alone. Draken and Ashrah make their way up to him.

"Are you alright?" Ashrah asks. "You look as though you have seen a ghost."

"I'm fine," he says. "I just... I didn't want to hang around there in case she came back."

Draken looks down at the amulet. "Hey, can I see that?" he asks.

"I think I'll hang onto it," Cao replies.

Ashrah smiles. "Well, now we can free your sister, and I can slay the countess. Let us---"

She stops, her smile fading. She turns around. "Do you feel that?"

Cao and Draken look around, seeing nothing. Ashrah draws her sword. "Prepare yourselves! They are approaching!"

Black shadows appear on the ground then, ooze-like and wispy, and from them emerge human forms! They are dark, clad in black and blue, with glowing red eyes!

"Wraith warriors!" Ashrah says. "They have come for me!"

Several of them manifest and begin to move in, ready for kombat.

"Go!" she urges them. "I will try and hold them off!"

"I say we value her sacrifice!" Draken whispers, prepared to run away.

Cao knows he faces a monster of darkness, a thing sent from the foulest depths of the Netherrealm. It is clever, cunning, and deviously deceptive. The wraith looks upon him like a giant would look upon a peasant, unphased and unimpressed. It knows he will be easy prey. The monumental power over shadow these creatures wield compared to him is unnerving and terrifying. To face one would not be so bad, but Cao faces a small legion.

Cao has never fought such an entity before. He has ran from guards, stolen from nobles, been chased by all manner of things... but for this, he knows he will have to do something so crazy, so desperate, so mind-blowingly simple, it would either have to work completely or fail and result in his death.

He reaches deep into the furthest corners of his mind and pulls out the only thing he can find.

He points his finger behind the wraith and shouts, "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!?!"

And every single wraith turns and looks.

Cao grabs Ashrah and they book it out of the Living Forest with Draken and never look back.

They reach sight of the walls and stop, looking back to see if they are pursued. They are not, as it turns out. Draken collapses onto his rear and pants as Ashrah turns and looks at Cao. "That was amazing!" she says with a smile. "How did you know that would work, Cao?"

"Uh... instincts?" he says.

"You're far more clever than I imagined!" she compliments him. "To pull such trickery upon them could only be the work of a master of deception!"

"...Sure!" he says, laughing a bit. He scratches the back of his head as Draken stands up.

Ashrah, still very impressed with his impromptu distraction, turns back towards the city of Z'unkahrah. Now all they need to do is get inside.

Cao starts off with a rocky beginning, but after he looks back and sees Ashrah watching him, his resolve doubles. He scales the wall, using bricks and ledges as handholds. Draken falls back as Cao makes it to the top with almost no trouble, showing off a great amount of skill and athleticism.

Once at the top, Cao spies a rope. He grabs it and lowers it down to Draken, and then to Ashrah.

Once both of them are up, she gives him another impressed look. "Truly you have many talents," she says with a smile. "I can only imagine what else you're hiding."

Cao pauses. "I try," he says, not used to having a woman pay him so many compliments. He scratches the back of his head nervously.

Draken interrupts them and says, "We need to get to the fountain! Come on!"

They find a staircase and head down it, with Cao pulling up his hood, glad to be back in town. He follows Draken through the streets towards the fountain. Draken pauses once he is out.

"Uh, I... I'm not sure I want to go back in and see the countess again," he says.

Cao rolls his eyes. It's not like Draken's been too useful so far.

Cao tells Ashrah to stay here with Draken. When he comes back with Sanra, then she can be set loose to deal with the vampire. Ashrah nods and waits as Draken chews on a nail nervously.

Cao descends into the catacombs, dodging the same traps as before, makes it into the countess' estate. Once inside, he heads upstairs, to her master bedroom.

He all but kicks open the doors and looks inside. Countess Mira is inside, on the bed, holding a sleeping Sanra in her arms. She must be under her spell still, for she didn't even stir when Cao made his entrance.

Mira looks up at him with a smile. "Ah, you've returned... and did you bring my prize?"

She gently rubs a hand across Sanra's neck.

She smiles. "That's not how this works, boy. You're going to hand it over and then I am going to release her, as agreed."

Sanra stirs and she whispers into her ear, "Shh, my dear, it's alright..." She looks up at Cao. "She's dreaming, you know. I can only imagine what of. Perhaps she's yearning for what only I can give her..."

She opens her mouth and displays her fangs, holding them over Sanra's throat. "I promise you I didn't touch her much while you were gone... Not with my teeth, that is. Oh, you should have heard the noises she made..."

Cao's eyes narrow as his hands clench into fists.

Cao takes it out and holds it up. Mira sits up, setting Sanra just off to the side.

"You have it..." she says, astounded.

"And I'll break it if you don't hand her over," Cao says.

Mira considers his words. "Alright. We'll compromise."

She commands Sanra to stand up and walk to the other side of the room. "Now toss it to me, and she will walk over to you," Mira says.

Cao looks at Sanra before tossing her the amulet. Mira catches it excitedly and Sanra wanders over and falls unconscious in his arms.

Cao quickly picks her up and carries her away.

"Nice doing business with you..." Mira cackles as he carries her to the trap door downstairs.

Minutes later, he's on the surface, emerging from the statue. Draken and Ashrah are both there waiting for him. "You did it!" Draken says.

"Shall I?" Ashrah asks. Cao tells her to be wary of traps in the dungeon below.

Ashrah places a hand on Cao's shoulder. "Rest assured, I shall deliver justice to this wicked creature."

She vanishes into the secret passageway and it closes behind her.

Draken gently shakes Sanra but she does not stir. "We need to get her out of the open," Cao says.

Keeping to the shadows, he and Draken make their way across the city with the unconscious Sanra. They stop once they reach Hideaway Alley.

Cao calls out for Hua and the little girl runs out, happy to see him, but gasping when she sees Sanra. "What happened, Cao? She looks pale!"

"She just needs water and rest," Cao says, setting her down in the shade. "We'll get her some."

Hua looks up at him. "Is she alright?"

"She'll be just fine," Cao says with a smile, tussling her hair a bit.

Cao and Draken stand up and walk outside, leaving Hua to take care of Sanra.

"Hey, Cao..." Draken says, causing him to stop and look at him. "Listen, I... I'm sorry."

Cao gives him a bit of a surprised look. "Really?"

"I never meant for any of this, Cao. I really didn't. I just wanted to help you and your sisters get out of this place, and I like Sanra. I wanted to help her get money for all four of us to get on a boat and leave."

Cao looks away. "I'm sorry, I'm just... I'm not very brave," he admits. "I just wanted to know if you could forgive me for making fun of you and leaving you under that rock."

Draken nods. "Alright. I'll get my friend and we'll come and help her."

Cao nods and heads out, splitting off from Draken.

Cao finds an empty bucket nobody is watching and brings it to a fountain. He fills it up and runs back to help Sanra.

Along the way, he overhears something strange that makes him stop. "Did you hear?" one peasant says to another. "Kotal Kahn was defeated in Mortal Kombat by that Earthrealmer!"

"He had to let those two who destroyed the city go," a third says. "The Elder Gods laws' are very clear. They were set free."

"I heard Kotal Kahn is gravely wounded from the battle," the second says. "He's been taken to his chambers to heal in the light of the sun atop his temple."

Cao is very curious... The Earthrealmer... The same one he stole from? He defeated Kotal Kahn in Mortal Kombat?

Unbelievable...

He makes it back to Hideaway Alley and helps Hua attend to Sanra. With some water on her face and in her mouth, she slowly wakes up. "Wh... What... Cao? Hua? What happened?"

"You're awake!" Hua says, hugging her sister tightly.

"I got you out of Countess Mira's estate," Cao says with a smile.

"I don't... I don't remember anything... What happened? My memory is like... fog..."

Cao doens't want to lie to his sister, even with Hua here. He goes into a long story, starting from the beginning. They listen with rapt attention, and when he reveals the truth, Hua gasps and Sanra rubs her neck, feeling the bite marks.

Cao tells the whole story, leaving out almost no details. He ends it with this moment.

Sanra sits back. "I can't believe it..."

"Yeah, blame Draken."

"No, that's not what I mean." She smiles at Cao. "I always knew you'd come through for me one day, Cao."

She gives him a tight hug. "Thank you, little brother."

Hua smiles and hugs them both, happy that their family is safe.

...But not for long.

All of their eyes shoot open as someone outside of Hideaway Alley shouts.

"THIEVES! YOU ARE SURROUNDED!"

Cao splits apart from the embrace and looks out the window. Both ends of the alleyway have guards. He looks up to the rooftops and sees more of them.

"No... No, no, no!" he says.

Hua huddles close to Sanra, who is still very weak. He looks back at them, wide-eyed.

'No, this isn't right! It can't be! They can't know we're here! The only other person who---'

"Draken..." he whispers in realization.

The voice returns. "YOU ARE SURROUNDED! SURRENDER AND WE WILL NOT HARM YOU!"

Cao knows there may be no way for Sanra and Hua to escape. Hua could make it, through one of the many small holes in the area, but Sanra can only escape if there are no guards...

Cao looks back at them. He'd do anything to protect his sisters...

"Get somewhere safe," he says.

"Cao, no!" Sanra protests as Hua clings tightly to her. "They'll kill you!"

He looks down at Hua and sees the fear in his little sister's eyes.

"Only if they catch me," he says softly.

He leaps out the window and down into the alleyway below.

He looks at both ends and sees the Kahn Guards, wearing their distinctive bone-masks. He looks up, seeing them on the rooftops above, holding spears.

At one end, the group splits open. A figure walks through. He's tall, with dark-brown leather clothing. He wears a mask and a leather hat, and he's strapped with bandoliers of ammunition for two firearms in holsters at his sides. A rifle is slung upon his back.

Two piercing eyes amidst dark eyesockets stare out at him. He knows who this man is---Erron Black, Kotal Kahn's top enforcer, bounty hunter and hitman. Wielder of strange weapons from another realm and time. Cao has never had to run from him before... until now.

Erron stares him down. "Looks like your luck's run out."

"I don't want any trouble..." Cao says, holding up a hand.

"Trouble's got you already."

They both stand, tense and ready, as the guards begin to close in.
