Stage 111: The Difference Between Dragons and Oni.

The fact that you are fasting in order to be worthy of meeting the emissary of Ryujin Owatatsumi only drives home the point you haven't actually eaten in a few days. While you understand, after a basic explanation, that your body can sustain itself as long as your Shen and Chi are balanced within each other and within yourself, it's still a little weird not to need to eat. You also need to find out if the immortality granted by the flesh of a ningyo has anything to do with it.

At this point nothing should surprise you, but you know better than to even think that horrible curse.

Still, it does allow you the pleasure and effort of making lunch for your family, and your new friend, a half-kappa by the name of Toshida Ginka, who has gotten you added on to the Ama Pearl Diving schedule for today. The act of preparing a meal also gives you a chance to be quiet and think about a few things, while allowing your family to get used to your new friend, and vice versa.

This last was hampered a bit at first by Yuuhi-chan threatening to behead your new friend; she apparently sensed some sort of danger in associating with her. Fortunately – or perhaps unfortunately – the threat is indirect, and you were able to gently talk Yuuhi-chan down. The other's helped as well, and now Ginka, though a little overwhelmed, is happily sharing stories and tea with your family, including a much more cheerful Yuuhi. The problem is that Yuuhi, being an enlightened immortal and strangely disconnected from the here-and-now, was absolutely certain about the threat, even if she didn't quite understand the source or how it worked.

You might be able to get more information from her, but then again, you might not. Not from lack of interest in helping on her part, but simply because she's Yuuhi. There are of course other situations to think on. If Yuuhi-chan did sense a threat, then you have a hunch that the threat may be more immediate, even if it isn't directly from Ginka-san. You might have to send someone to investigate. Alternatively, you could see if Akari-chan is ready to travel; her injuries were pretty bad, but she has been resting. Leaving a day early could make a difference. But there is also the matter of meeting your father's representative. Or worse, your father himself.

As you slice the pickles with your claws, you glance at the small group of mostly relaxed and almost entirely happy people that you have with you. Even though your family is not all here, there is still a warmth, a togetherness that makes you feel reassured they are all safe and healthy. You're going to have to keep it that way for a little longer; you'll be heading home soon, and travel is always perilous when dealing with rich and clever enemies, and you have a lot of both.

[] Call Yuuhi-chan over to ask about her feeling of danger.
[] Get Yui-chan's help and ask her what she thinks of Akari's health.
[] Distract your priestess and ask about the offering you'll be making.
[] Ask Inau-kun if she'd do you a favor and have a look around.
[] Screw it. There's time for that later – everyone needs to eat.

In China, the head of the tortoise is said to resemble certain male qualities....a tortoise doesn't rmemeber the date or yrear of it's birth, meanign it tends to bastardy. A turtles egg is what you call someone who is orphaned with no knowledge of mother and father. And sex with tortoises grants miraculous healing. [XXX] Distract your priestess and ask about the offering you'll be making.
[XX] Call Yuuhi-chan over to ask about her feeling of danger.
[XX] Ask Inau-kun if she'd do you a favor and have a look around.
[X] Get Yui-chan's help and ask her what she thinks of Akari's health.

You arrange the pickles in decorative patterns over the onigiri of freshly steamed rice, and then work on making some fresh seaweed soup. The cafeteria on the island has been generous, to say the very least, but that's to be expected when they are trying to gain the blessing of the Dragon-God of the oceans himself.

You slide your tail over and lightly brush the soft metallic fins of your priestess' tail with the vanes and fur of you own, which causes her to make a startled, almost strangled noise. Fortunately, Yuuhi-chan is being fairly boisterous so only Yui-chan and your wife notice, really. Not including Akari, who notices everything. The hot glare is actually tangible as warm radiance along your back through the simple miko-styled clothing you wear.

Despite her ire, the continued brushing prompts her to excuse herself and she stalks over to you, nearly fuming. You glance sidelong at her and hand her a bowl of water. Not a cup, a bowl; it's not for drinking in this case. She quickly mellows out, finally picking up on the fact that something is troubling you.

“I don't often admit to total ignorance, but I would really like to know what to expect when I make the offering, Kiku-chan. It might be my father who showed up to collect, after all.” She nods solemnly as she washes her hands in the cold water, sluicing it from one hand over the other and onto the floor, where the clever and decorative grating takes the water away while minimizing the chances of anyone getting soaked by sitting on the floor. “And how do I make the offering exactly? I know it has to do with the nusa....”
>>
“A nusa is made by making a bundle of inaw, baka dragon. When you are asked to make the offering you swim to the deepest part of the diving area here and lay the bundle at the deepest point possible. Normally, the diver stays down as long as she can, but you have to stay until the offering is taken.” Considering this is a fairly big deal, that shouldn't be too long, you think. “I am going to implore Ryujin Owatatsumi himself to come, but that will not necessarily work. I know that it is momentous for you, but you must stay calm because you are being a miko.”

You take a deep breath as you season the soup and add some bits of finely diced oyster to it. “I know. But there isn't anything special I need to do or worry about? Aside from the whole, 'Hi pops' thing?” The aura of barely restrained violence is more act than real threat, but Kiku's tail is thrashing about really nicely. “Well, that does make things a little easier. Thank you.” She places the bowl next to you and you lean over to kiss her forehead, which makes her blush.

“....bakayero....”

Despite her casual, and unmeant insult, you smile and shake your head. “Could you send Yui-niji-chan over? I have to ask her a few things.”

Kiku's golden eyes flick to Akari, and she frowns. “She shouldn't be moved for at least another day. We're committed to the ceremony now, and cannot leave until this evening at the very earliest, Ryukusa-sama. But I really would like her to heal more.”

“It would go faster if we could give her more alcohol, but what she needs I can't bring here.” She nods and walks away, speaking to Yui quietly before sitting down and rejoining the conversation. Ginka notices, and you smile at her as you start setting up the trays of onigiri and bowls of hot soup, along with the sliced and decorous pickles. Frowning, you grab some ingredients out of ~Nowhere~ and start in on dumplings and buns. You're not quite sure about black bean sauce and steamed buns with oysters, but it should turn out okay.

“Yes aniki?”

“I already talked to Kiku-chan but I wanted to see what you thought about us leaving early-”

“No way, aniki.” The flat finality in her voice is unusual and you look down at her as you hand her the third and fourth trays.

“That bad huh?” She nods solemnly. “All right then. I'm going to talk to Inau-kun, and then you and she are probably going to take a look around, specifically for anyone or anything that might be a real problem to us later.” She nods and rises carefully, balancing all four trays carefully. A few weeks ago and she wouldn't have dared. Her confidence, her belief in herself is growing. You like to think you had a hand in that, but you suspect Kiki-hime is also helping, and perhaps more than you are in some ways.

As you prepare the buns and dumplings, cooking them in a bamboo container over nothing more than the floor and superheated steam from the black smoker vents, Inau-kun steps over to you and kneels at your side quietly. “Yes, Ryukusa-sama?”

“I would like you and Yui-niji-chan to do me a favor and scout the area extra thoroughly. I want to see if we can get a step ahead of whatever forces that set Yuuhi's trouble-detector off.” Her eyes dart to the scarred kappa-child. “No, I don't think it's her directly. It's indirect at best; she's nothing if not sincere. No, I want you and she to look for things not threatening, out of the ordinary but not obviously threatening. I don't know exactly what it is Yuuhi-chan sensed, but I want to know.” You hand her the steaming basket of buns and dumpling and she juggles it for a few seconds. “Oh, sorry!” You cool it down significantly and she smiles gratefully.

Turning around to call Yuuhi-chan over while Inau-kun takes Akari her lunch, you're somewhat startled to have almost everyone looking at you; Ginka's mouth is open in shock, and Kiku-chan is shaking her head as she delicately nibbles on a rice-cake, while Yuuhi-chan and Yui-chan are giggling madly. Kiki-hime's are shining and full of love, while Akari simply takes the bamboo basket from Inau-kun and opens it, slowly – unusually so, even for her – beginning to munch on a pork – er, oyster bun.

[XXX] A good housewife should be able to cook!
[+] ….so....in like....eight minutes....right?

You sigh. Your head dropping, and your gaze upon the floor. “I was doing it again, huh?” Kiki-hime nods, still smiling brightly; Yui nods as well, but she manages to do it while slurping her soup with the bowl tilted up over her face. Akari smiles indulgently, while Kiku-chan just disses you. Ginka is in shock, while Inau-kun is looking impressed.

“Well, a good housewife should be able to cook an excellent meal in like eight minutes! Even if she has to use a microwave and prepare everything ahead of time! You can never tell when your next meal may strike, and if you can't prepare it quickly, the next one might get away! So remember that a good housewi8fe is always prepared to cook a meal at any time, in any situation, with any ingredients!”

“....aniki, why are you posing like that?” Yui's query causes the rest of your family and your friend to burst into laughter as you settle down.

“I just can't help it. It's like everything seems to fit together so perfectly....” You pour yourself some spring water and drain half the cup. “Anyways, eat up, and if you'd like something special, I have some stuff leftover still.” No one does really, although second – and thirds and fourths for a certain oni-chick – are definitely requested. The meal is filled with polite and quiet small talk, and the thanks at the end of the meal give you a burst of warmth like those of prayers can give you, though you feel it's more this place and the fasting that are doing it.
>>
>>45379598
Then again, who knows. “Ginka, I need to speak with Yuuhi-chan, and then we should probably get ready for the dive.”

She looks surprised. “Is it that late?”

You nod. “I always know what time it is. Tides, you know.” She looks confused.

“Ryu-chan can feel the movement of the moon on the ocean,” Kiki-hime explains softly as she gently guides Ginka over to where Akari is laying down again, her meal only half finished, which worries you a little.

[+] Or some where with a nice view at least.

“Is there somewhere we can meet? It may take a bit.” You actually just want Yuuhi-chan relaxed and calm, and somewhere outside might be good in this case. There's some pretty scenery around here. You also suspect she's probably never had shaved ice.

“We can meet in the changing room. I think Fushika-san is about your size. She might have a spare diving uniform you can use.” She doesn't ask if you need a mask, though you'll probably need a snorkel just to appease the safety inspectors. And probably a mask too, since you brought them up.

“I have a snorkel and mask I use, so I won't need to borrow those. And if you let me take a look at one of the diving uniforms, I can make one pretty quickly.”

She starts to disagree, then thinks better of it. “Okay, you can use one of mine.” She pulls it from ~Nowhere~ and you place it back ~Nowhere~ almost as quickly.

“Thank you. I'll be there soon.” The others are cleaning up after lunch, and with Kiku-chan overseeing and giving prayers. You steal a quick....short....lingering....okay, fairly involved kiss from your wife before you gently take Yuuhi's hand and lead her towards the doors, while the others say their goodbyes to Ginka.

“Yes aniki?” Her guileless eyes are bright and glow faintly in the somewhat dark temple.

“I wanted to ask you a few questions, but I also wanted to take you for a walk. It's nice out, and I think I have a treat for you.” That make her perk up instantly. “Have you ever had shaved ice?”

“No, aniki. It sounds cold.” You're really not quite sure what to say to that that wouldn't come across as insulting or condescending so you just nod. “Okay.” She follows you easily, though she pauses to place her nodachi ~Nowhere~ before she steps outside. It's fairly busy, but not particularly crowded, and it doesn't take much of a walk to get her some shaved ice – hers a rainbow of flavors, and plain ice for yourself, as you're fasting.

Her first attempt is of course to touch her tongue to the ice, and then smack her lips slightly as she withdraws it. You smile as she looks utterly confused bu the sensation combined with the taste. She presses her tongue to it then withdraws it again, which nets her a few odd looks, but she ignores them all. Yuuhi-chan then tries a lick, but she scrambles to keep the ice in place when it starts lifting out of the cup. A more cautious lick follows, as you surreptitiously take a picture for Kiki-hime's photo album that she doesn't realize she's now starting because you just decided it has to happen.

Pretty soon Yuuhi-chan has the hang of it, and you guide her to the courtyard, where there's currently a minimum of people and a maximum of flowers and empty walkways.

[] Start by asking what the threat she felt was.
[] Ask Yuuhi-chan if she's up to talking about what happened.
[] Since it's not entirely out of the question....can she see the future?
[] What does she think of Ginka now, as a start....
[] Explain she's not in trouble, but she shouldn't draw on someone unexpectedly.

[] Start by asking what the threat she felt was.
[] Ask Yuuhi-chan if she's up to talking about what happened.
[] Explain she's not in trouble, but she shouldn't draw on someone unexpectedly.

I do like the emphasis that if it's an immediate threat to take actionaction, but if it's a vague indirect threat like this, some sort of warning would be best.

Even the smallest amount of time to prepare can help or response a huge amount.

XXXX] Ask Yuuhi-chan if she's up to talking about what happened.
[XX] Start by asking what the threat she felt was.
[XX] Explain she's not in trouble, but she shouldn't draw on someone unexpectedly.
[+] Bearing in mind there are things she can't or won't tell us, work around to the problem you can assess the best you can.
[+] Also, make a contingency or alternate plan that involves communicating threats rather than surprise sword-drawing.
[+] Maybe see if mystics or sorcery might help negate the threat?

You smile as Yuuhi struggles to find the most effective way of licking the ice without knocking the ice off; apparently something about the way her tongue is built makes her licks a great deal more forceful than humans can lick. Of course, there's the inevitable attempt to bite come off, and you shudder as she scrapes her teeth along the flavored ice. It doesn't seem to bother her though, and she scrapes several more 'bites' off the rounged ball of ice shavings.

Inevitably, as she sucks on the ice, the cold hits the back of her head. So....she sticks her tongue out and turns to face the sun. You take a picture of that too, because her tongue is a variety of colors, and it looks like she's licking a rainbow out of a sunbeam, her ears laid flat her her tail exploded from the brainfreeze she must have suffered.

“Are you all right, Yuuchi?” It is so hard not to laugh at her reaction, but you manage to keep it down to a smile. She smacks her lips, and licks them, and then takes another tentative lick of her ice. Only then does she nod, pushing the ice into the cone-shaped cup with her tongue. You eat some more of yours, prying away bits with your teeth – but not scraping, kami no – and then lean back against the table as she tentatively licks the melted ice-syrup mixture from her cup, turning her tongue an inelegant shade of purple-brown. “Are you okay taking about what happened earlier?”
>>
>>45381050
“Which time?” she asks curiously.

“When you drew your sword the last time?” Her confusion clears and she nods, lapping at the liquid in her cup in quick darting motions....

….right until she splashes some up her nose and immediately has the worst sneezing fit you've ever seen outside of a comedy where one of the main characters was the subject of all the school gossip across three prefectures. She even sneezes cutely too, shaking her head and flattening her ears and her tail bushed out in alarm. You gently pinch her nose and she....well, you'd say coughs, but it is more like a cross between a cough, a squeak, and a tiny gunshot.

That does the trick though, and she blinks her watery eyes at you. “Shaved ice is the devil,” she declares matter-of-factly.

[] ….really, she's got that down pat.
[] Apologize for the experience. Try not to laugh. Try HARD.
[] Give up for now – she's got you beaten.
[] Offer her your water, that will help.
[] Hug your confused, confusing, weird samurai.

[X] Offer her your water, that will help.
[XX] Apologize for the experience. Try not to laugh. Try HARD.
[XXX] Hug your confused, confusing, weird samurai.

You offer her your now melted ice, taking her colorful purple remnants in the cup away from her and deposition it into a trash bin with an expert shot. Yuuhi uses both hands and drinks the water, relief blossoming as she washes the potent syrup down. You take the cup away from her and she sniffles, her ears twitching.

“I really, really am sorry, I didn't think it would be that bad.” You don't try to hide the smile, because she's really cute, especially when she's in harmless turmoil like that. You do manage not to laugh, though it's a close thing; Yuuhi sticks her tongue out and looks at it, her eyes nearly crossing, which just makes it all the harder to keep from laughing.

You wrap your arms around Yuuhi-chan tightly and break into giggles, hugging her tight. She immediately hugs you back, her tail wrapping around your side and back, the tip brushing up and down your lower back as she sniffles rather loudly in your ear. You kiss her temple and just give her another tight squeeze, which makes her giggle finally. Relaxing, you stroke your nogitsune-born's hair, though you're careful to keep away from her ears.

Once you've ~both~ settled down, you keep stroking her soft hair. “What was the threat you felt from Ginka-san, Yuuchi? You said it wasn't really from her....” Yuuhi frowns and lowers her gaze to the ground. “You're not in any trouble. Next time, though, try and give me a silent warning, like through the Void, or in a hand signal. I'll have Yui-niji-chan and Akari-niji-chan teach you more.” She looks at you dubiously. “That was we can coordinate a defense or an attack without the enemy knowing.” Her expression clears and she nods seriously.

“It wasn't her, but it was around her. She was going to get you into danger, life threatening danger, and no one can be there to help.” Yuuchi's sincerity is only marred by one small thing.

“You say 'was', but you also said 'can'. Are you seeing the future Yuuhi-chan?”

Her tail flicks back and forth. “Which one, aniki?” she asks earnestly.

It all falls into place then. She was sensing potential threats in possible futures. Unlike Water Eyes used to see a future, or Divination to predict the most likely outcome, what Yuuhi experienced – might be experiencing – is more of a fluid, changing future of potentials and possible, nothing even remotely set in stone. And because they are only possibilities and potential futures, she doesn't pay them any mind once the moment she sees it is past, hence her 'forgiveness' of Ginka-san.

“How bad was it, Yuuchi?”

She looks at you, her face such a mask of horror-filled terror that makes even your unnatural resilience to emotional power momentarily quiver. “~Snakes~. Snakes EVERYWHERE all over you.”

You reach over and touch her forehead, nearly having to force yourself to do so; the mask-like, contorted expression fade and she blinks at you mildly.

It's an incredibly well-writen story about the supernatural and spiritual side of Japan, crazy fights, love, relationships, cute and badass characters, horrifying or heart-warming situations, and many other things.

If you like a story with powerful characters who still have difficulties, both in fights and outside of them, yuri, complexe narratives and/or Japanese mythology, this quest is definitively worth reading.

If you don't care for those things, I'd say you should still give it a try, because the QM is definitively one of the best writers I've ever read.

[X] All the cute horror your little Water dragonette brain can digest.

You reach over and start sliding your hand along her soft, warm ears. Yuuhi-chan shudders, arching her back and her tail spasming into fluff once before falling limp along the bench. Heaving a huge, slow sigh, you murmur softly to your black fox softly. “I will be very careful about it, Yuuhi-chan. I can't promise, but I'll do my best outside of a promise. Just....don't let Kiki-hime ever see that expression. She'd have a nervous breakdown.”

Yuuhi murmurs softly, “Uh huh.” Oh, ear petting. Yeah she's not going to be much use to you like that. So you switch to her relatively harmless tail, ignoring the atavistic (and undoubtedly influenced by Marget) feeling that a mouth is gong to open up in it and swallow your hand. Her eyelashes flutter and her crimson eyes meet your sapphire blue ones. “Please don't die again, master,” she whispers softly.

Well, that kind of clears up the question as to whether she stopped worrying over the vision or premonition or....you aren't really sure what to call it. In any case, it seems that Yuuhi-chan is still worried about you, but isn't going to blame Ginka-san for something that Yuuhi clearly believes isn't her fault. “What is the best way to avoid this vision of yours, Yuuhi-chan?” She lowers her hears and you stop petting her tail so that you can draw her into a hug.

“I dunno. Except....if I'd killed her the danger would be gone but it would be different.”

If you weren't a Water dragonette that would be a lot more cryptic, but as it stands, you are, and it isn't. Someone is/was/might be planning to use Ginka as a hostage and take you to Oba-san. And that gives you a leg up on anyone trying it.
>>
>>45382635
“Thank you Yuuhi-chan. That's just what I needed to know.” You squeeze her and she snuggles into your shoulder, her hands clutching your sides firmly. She sniffles a little and you just hold her tight, ignoring that she's crying into your shoulder, because samurai aren't supposed to cry. Yuuhi, on the other hand, is allowed to cry if she wants to.

After a few minutes she sniffles and draws back. You let her go, a little reluctantly, and smile at her. “Are you all right now?” When she nods, after a moment more of calming herself, you help her off the bench and walk her to the temple, your fingers lightly tangled in hers.

It's time for you to join the Ama now, however, but there's one last detail to nail down. Of course Kiku-miko-chan and Inau-kun have to be at the ceremony....but that leaves Akari-niji-chan who is injured, Yui-niji-chan, Yuuhi-chan, and Kiki-hime. If an attempt to kidnap someone is going to happen, and you manage to remove Toshida Ginka out of the equation....that means you have two points of extreme vulnerability: Akari and Kiki.

Throwing up a Barrier might include local spirit children – it depends on who is throwing it up, though. More importantly, if Kiki-hime is performing a ceremony, that means they SHOULD leave her the heaven alone. But that's not a guaranteed amnesty, especially when you consider the enemies you have. So....trust in Inau-kun and Kiku-chan to take care of themselves and each other, or assign either Yui or Yuuhi to them, and hope that the temple itself will protect those within.

[] Yui goes with Kiku and Inau, Yuuhi stays with Kiki and Akari.
[] Yuuhi goes with Kiku and Inau, Yui stays with Kiki and Akari.
[] Yuuhi and Yui both stay; Kiku-chan can take care of herself an Inau-kun if it comes to that.

[-] Involve the human security. They'll be cannon fodder but will buy time.
[X] ….you could subvert the entire problem. It would suck, but you could....

As much as you'd like to have the humans help protect your family, you have the awfully strong suspicion that if Oba-san sent someone, it would be Elites, plural, and the humans would either be absolutely useless or worse, get themselves killed. So you can't do that. The Headwoman of the Ama might be of some help, but that's a calculated risk too; she's human but she is elderly and revered.

You take Yuuhi inside and then call your family together. It hurts to give them their brief, to the point instructions: Yui-niji-chan and Yuuhi-chan will guard Kiki-hime and Akari-niji-chan. Kiku-sama and Inau-sama will have to perform most of the ceremony themselves, with your help. The danger that Yuuhi-chan sensed is explained, and that sobers all of them quite quickly. You give Akari a second set of instruction – that Kiki-hime and herself are NOT allowed to be captured; Yui notices the hand-signs but doesn't know them all; Kiku-chan remains silent as you instruct your harbinger that any and all means are to be used to prevent their capture.

You kiss them, all of them, hugging them tight and trying to reassure them that they'll be safe with each other. It's a lot harder to reassure them that YOU'LL be safe, but you manage. Barely, but you manage.

Then you have to be on your way. And once you are out of ear shot, away from them all, you steel your heart and take a deep breath. Because there's one other way you can prevent this from becoming a clusterfuck.

Taking out your cell phone, you dial a number. The clipped voice on the end is sultry, soft, and purely human. “Yes?” Himeyuri could make billions at phone sex. You just know it.

“Put Oba-san on the line.”

See, this is why you never vote something with "it would suck, but you could" in it, in this quest.

Though, minor nitpick: there was two "subvert the problem", the same as "involve human security". Why did it still got in?

I can't speak for other anons, but I consider those two options as equaly bad, though for completly different reasons.

There was a strong case against involving the humans as well. As for the call... any problems that can come of it technically haven't happened yet.

Maybe we get something out of this. We are a bit unclear of her plans maybe we can figure something out.

Well, since we're calling her despite how bad an idea it is, I think we should simply go "if your lackeys threaten me or anyone I care about, their only two options will be to join me or die."

No matter what happen, it's going to consume our Good Stuff.

I mean, Ryukusa is merciful, but she won't allow Oba-shit to keep her soldiers if the old dirtstain insists on going to war with her.

Hopefully it is balanced out by the good stuff we picked up last time somewhat.

Thanks for running!

Human security did get in, but there was a large amount of counterargument against it.

Good Stuff always is spend on tangible (relatively speaking) benefits. If Good Stuff IS spent on this call (a possibility, but not particularly likely) then a permanent and useful benefit will accrue at that time.

What is happening at the moment is that Ryukuza is literally riding high on Good Stuff. Chance/Fate/the Kami are on her side right now. This call will suck...but she CAN subvert this problem.

Ryukuza has a numbe rof edges on Oba-san at the moment, the three most important of which are:
A) Oba-san is human. A powerful, kamuy-possessing sorceress with a lot of expericvne, but still ~human with the fundamental flaws and benefits that comes with.
B) She knows of the potential kidnapping against all odds and reason. That's enough to shake anyone's world up.
C) She's a Water dragonette using communication skills. She's got the 'home field advantage' on a phone.

Fair enough.

Thanks again, XS!

I'd be funny if Oba-shit had troubles handling the phone call, given that since she's very, very old, she probably trained to discuss with people in front of her, with all their quirks and expressions to help giving infos, and maybe didn't try to upgrade her skills to more modern means.

Speaking of which, XS, did you like this mermaid doujin?

*It'd be funny
