Hello and welcome to Mortal Kombat Thief Quest, a continuation of Mortal Kombat Konquest. I am Damashi, an emissary of the Elder Gods and not an avatar of Onaga, the Dragon King, attempting to deceive you. I will be your storyteller and you will decide where the story goes and what happens next. Previously, our tale concerned a warrior from Earthrealm, Akayama Kaito, wielder of lightning and other elements, a paragon of right and justice.

After waking up twenty years in the future and going on new adventures, he has left to train with others, such as Master Bo’ Rai Cho and the water-monks of the Lung Hai Temple. As he trains his body and mind to master his new powers, we now turn our eyes to another fighter within the realms, one very different from Kaito, and one very much not a hero. Yet.

This is the story of Cao, a thief from Outworld.

Within the realm of Outworld lies the city of Z'unkahrah, capital city for the imperial rule of Kotal Kahn. It is an ancient city, one undergoing many changes in the last two decades, since the former Emperor, Shao Kahn, was killed during his invasion of Earthrealm. Kotal of the osh-tekk people rose to take the title of Kahn, and has ruled ever since, albeit more benevolently than Shao Kahn did. But one would be foolish to mistake his lighter rule for an inability to maintain an iron grip on his territory and the people within it. Kotal is both a powerful warrior and a cunning diplomat, who rigidly adheres to his principles and charges his guards and agents to enforce his laws with utmost brutality if necessary.

One such law regards thievery: all thieves shall be put to death.

But that's only the ones who are caught; not ones like Cao.

Cao is a thief. He has prowled the shadows of Z'unkahrah ever since he was twelve years old, when his father was executed for being a soldier loyal to Shao Kahn, fighting in the armies of General Reiko after the Emperor's death. He, his older sister and his mother, pregnant with his soon-to-be-born younger sister, were made to watch as Kotal Kahn executed his father along with many other enemy soldiers. The Emperor carved out his father's heart and drank its blood as the crowd cheered his name.

It wasn't long after his little sister was born that their mother vanished without a word or a trace, leaving all three children to fend for themselves. No one would associate with them out of fear for the bad luck their family seemed to be cursed with. And so, in order to survive, Cao and his sisters turned to thievery, begging and pickpocketing. Cao has seen many thieves put to death, but each time he reminds himself that it's because they were caught.

Not like him; nobody catches Cao.

On this day in particular, Cao sits on one of the rooftops overlooking the kove, where ships come and go; merchant vessels, slave ships, imperial cargo haulers. Nothing out of the ordinary. Cao finds himself looking out over the water, bored. He hasn't seen a good mark all day. His sister Sanra will likely bring back a good haul, she usually does. She doesn’t gloat but he hates days when he can’t match her. But just when he is about to give up and head somewhere else, something strange happens out on the water that draws his eyes. A mist begins to form above the water, an unnatural fog, growing and taking the shape of a ship. He squints as he stands up, putting a hand over his eyes to block out the sun.

From this swirling cloud emerges a ship unlike any he's ever seen. It's large, with beautiful sails with the Elder God symbol of the dragon upon them. The wood of the ship looks brand new, and it's covered in decorations, looking almost like something that belongs in a parade. The ship cuts through the water towards the port and makes for an empty dock, pulling up alongside it. Cao can see the crew from here; a shokan, some outworlders, at least one tarkatan, with others he doesn't recognize, including a winged bird-woman and a large reptilian beast—not at all like the saurians in the city. The dock manager, a man Cao often tries to avoid, shouts at them that they need to pay to moor their ship.

Cao crouches down and continues to spy as someone steps off onto the deck. He's a man, looks a bit like a fighter, with clean clothes and a yellow sash. He's carrying a generously-sized bag of koins, and now Cao is very, very interested. He sees the man pay the dock manager with ten jade koins, but the bag looks like it holds many more. The dock manager moves off and Cao watches the man tie the koins to his belt and turn to look at a masked woman jumping off the ship onto the dock and approaching him.

She's beautiful and deadly-looking, with one hell of a chest and an outfit to show it off, but he's not paying her much attention. Instead, Cao is fixated on that bag. It's just hanging out in the open! He knows that it's bound to get stolen sooner or later with that kind of lax attention paid to it—the question is who is going to steal it first. With a bag like that, he could practically pay to feed himself and his sisters for a month!

They're headed towards the markets now; the man, the masked woman with the amazing rack, a younger male with a yellow headband and matching sash as the older one (a younger brother, perhaps?) and a fourth joins them as well, some kind of ninja-warrior clad in orange. Cao has his sights on the bag but getting there and getting out isn't going to be easy with so many eyes. Plus, he has learned that appearances are often deceiving—they could have powers. Thankfully it's high noon and the market is at its busiest, full of people hustling and bustling about.

He leaps down into the sand and keeps his head low as he follows behind them, slowly working his way closer. The key is to be fast and utterly precise, without anything seeing or knowing—hopefully, he won't even realize he's been robbed until Cao is far gone. All of them are distracted by the sights and sounds of the marketplace. Cao smiles to himself—tourists. From another realm with a magic ship, maybe? It doesn't matter. He's close enough now that he can almost smell the koins...

Just then, an old woman, a clumsy fool named Blanche, bumps into his target! A lesser thief would abandon his mission right now, but Cao sees his opportunity and dashes in, walking nonchalantly up to the back of the man, untying the bag and walking away in less than three seconds. His heart pounds from the rush of it and he vanishes into the crowd, subtly tucking the weighty bag under one arm.

He did it! They didn't even know what hit them! Cao can't help but smile to himself as he reaches the other end of the market and hides behind a stall. He opens the bag and looks inside and nearly dies of a heart attack; there must be at least a hundred or maybe even two hundred koins in this bag!

He can't help but fish some out and look at them, admiring them. So taken aback by his luck that he forgot one of his own rules; don't stick around the crime scene. Someone steps into view and he looks up, seeing the orange ninja from before, looking right down at him.

The man's eyes suddenly burst into flame, and then the rest of his body follows!

Cao wastes no time and closes the back and takes off as the man raises his hands and blasts the cart he was hiding behind, setting it on fire and creating a small explosion. People scream and look upon the fiery figure with wide eyes, but Cao doesn't spare a look back—he's on the run. He turns and skids along the dirt with one hand on the ground and looks up, making eye contact with the man he just robbed.

For the briefest of moments, they merely stare at each other before Cao takes off running with the man in hot pursuit. Cao's bare feet kick up dirt behind him as he sprints away, but he can hear the man behind him.

Cao runs down an alleyway and kicks out a wooden stand that was supporting wooden poles and staves to trip the man. He doesn't look back to see if it works, but the man in pursuit ends up tripping, giving Cao some distance. He hears a whooshing noise from behind him and then the sound of further pursuit.

He makes it to a new corner of the market, a long road of vendors and shops. He spies a horned stomper with a harness pulling a cart and leaps up onto its back before jumping onto a stack of crates. He hears the man jump and grab onto the crate he's standing on and so he leaps off, kicking it back as he makes for a nearby cloth stretched over a shop, knocking the stack of crates down as he does. He bounces off the cloth and grabs onto a balcony, pulling himself up.

He spares a single glance back and sees the man generate some kind of wind beneath him to propel himself upwards! He can fly?! Cao doesn't ponder it and runs to the end of the balcony with the man right on his heels.

"Excuse me! I need that!" he calls out to Cao, who pays him no heed. He dives off the balcony towards the ground and lands in the dirt rolling, up on his feet and running. He hears the man jump after him.

Cursing his luck with how persistent this man is, Cao reaches into the bag and grabs a handful of koins. He opens his mouth and shouts, "FREE MONEY!" before tossing them up into the air to rain down behind him. Predictably, everyone goes for them, greedily grabbing at them and forming a wall of bodies between him and his pursuer.

He didn't like doing that, but he's got koins to spare for the moment—and a few fewer koins is well worth an escape.

He reaches an alley he is very familiar with—abandoned and a haven for people like him. He wastes no time and runs into a building where he has set up one of his little tricks to get out of situations like this; a dark room with a stack of sandbags about his height. He tears off his jacket and takes a moment to put it on the sandbags with the hood up, facing away from the entrance. "STOP RIGHT THERE!" a voice calls out in the alley.

He approaches a wall and pulls aside some loose boards, climbing inside and sealing himself within. There is a ladder hear that leads up to the rooftops. He scales it as quickly and quietly as he can, reaching the roof and looking down. He hears a sound from below as the man tackles the sandbags and he cannot help but smile to himself at how well it worked.

But then, something he didn't expect: his little sister, Hua, only eight years old, runs out of one of the nearby buildings. The man leaps out and shouts, "STOP RIGHT THERE, THIEF!" undoubtedly thinking that it is him.

Hua puts on her best frightened, innocent child act and falls back with a scream, backing up to the wall and taking out her knife, pointing it at him with a shaking hand. Cao drops to his stomach as he looks down, unable to know how the man is going to react. He needs to give his sister a way out!

But the only thing he has on him now is the bag of koins. He opens it and takes one out and, without pausing to consider it much, throws it at the back of the man's head.

No money is worth the love he has for his sister. One less koin makes no difference.

He hides as the man picks up the koin, spying on Hua as she immediately breaks off and heads for a hole in a nearby wall that she is small enough to fit into. He smiles and rolls away, out of sight, out of mind.

He silently pants as his heart returns to normal. He can hear conversation from below as one of the man's friends catches up to him; then silence as they both leave. Cao waits a few minutes more before looking down into the alley. Sure enough, he's nowhere to be seen.

Cao smiles again. The man gave up and he got away—again.

He hefts up the bag. One hell of a haul, too...

‘Looks like your luck is turning, Cao…’ he thinks to himself.

Sorry for the text dump, but those of you who follow the quest know that we're already acquainted with Cao---I just wanted to write the scene from his perspective.

I'd like to bring quick attention to the new document in the OP; it's a google doc with all the information on Cao's campaign in it, along with updated and revised rules for kombat and other things.

We'll be trying out a few new things with this quest, so I encourage you to take a look.

Hope you guys had a good week; I've got a four-day weekend and plenty of Mortal Kombat Konquest lined up.

After peeking over to look down and make sure that nobody is there, Cao hops over the edge and grabs onto a lower ledge, stopping himself from falling all the way before dropping to the dirt floor. He approaches the building with his sandbag distraction and sees all the bags knocked over and his jacket among them.

He picks it up and shakes it off a bit, ridding it of sand, before sliding it back on and putting the hood up. He's glad the man didn't take it, but then again, there's nothing much to his jacket outside of sentimental value.

With the koin bag tucked securely under one arm underneath the jacket, he scales the stairs to the second floor and crawls out a window onto a wooden beam that crosses an adjacent alleyway, making his way into another abandonned building. It's a route he knows well, having traversed this part of town many times.

He knows that the best thing to do would be to make it back home, in the aqueducts of the city, but there aren't many places to access it without drawing any attention. He knows the nearest one, however: the question is how he wants to get there.

Cao reaches a low window and climbs out of it, onto a nearby rooftop. From here, he scales a series of wooden boards to another, and before long he's fairly high up, crouching as he dashes across the rooftops of Z'unkahrah.

He feels the bag under his arm and he can't help but imagine how many are inside. Maybe three hundred, even! He can hardly wait to get home and count them all.

He stops and pauses briefly as he looks out over the city. Kotal Kahn's palace, styled like a tiered pyramid---a ziggurat---can be seen, as well as some other notable features, like the arena and the great tower. He doesn't stay for long, heading towards a familiar alley and dropping down onto a few crates stacked atop each other.

He moves to the end of the alley and looks out at his target: a large, public well, made of stone bricks stacked about three feet high in a circle. It's not often used ever since the water in this part of town went bad, but sometimes people like to linger around it. Cao and his sisters use it to reach the aqueducts.

Currently, the coast seems clear.

Cao takes a moment before he casually strolls out towards the well. 'Nothing to see here. Just out for a walk,' he thinks to himself, trying his best to act casual. He suddenly pauses when he notices a guard walking this way, his weapons sheathed. Cao ducks behind the well as the guard walks over, apparently taking off his mask and spitting down into the water below.

Cao remains as low to the ground as possible, cursing his jumpiness. If the guard walks around and sees him, he'll have a reason to suspect he's hiding. If he can just stay out of sight long enough until the guard passes on back the way he came...

>In this instance, the early roll was decent, and the bad roll is countered by the 90.

Cao holds himself up against the well and remains there, listening for the guard. The man spits again before leaving. Cao smiles to himself but then finds that he is about to sneeze; he clasps his hands over his mouth and holds it in.

The guard stops, but then keeps going, convincing himself it was nothing.

Cao smiles once more before standing up and hopping over down into the well, grabbing a rope and sliding down into the murky water below. The flow isn't particularly high at the moment, only up to his ankles, making it manageable.

Cao begins to trek through the psuedo-sewers, built long ago before the city was erected atop them, some say. He holds his nose and steps up onto a stone platform, walking into a hall and out of the water.

Eventually, Cao reaches a junction that, to others, would seem almost labyrinthian in nature, but he knows it well. He skulks into the shadows and eventually finds his home.

Cao and his sisters live in a small, hidden place amongst the shadows of the underground. Here, they have small beds with dirty sheets and pillows, along with a table and a single candle. A shelf lines one wall, with stolen odds and ends, curiosities that can't be sold on the market, as well as little arts and crafts projects made by his little sister Hua.

There are also books on the shelf, but Cao doesn't much care for those.

He's alone currently. Sanra and Hua are still out.

Cao takes a peek out into the twisting hallways and corridors that surround his home, finding no one coming. Feeling more secure, he steps back inside, sits at the table and takes out the koin bag and begins to count.

It takes him a while, since he has to separate them by type, but eventually he finalizes the count after double-checking to make sure.

Sapphire - 36
Onyx - 29
Jade - 10
Ruby - 8
Gold - 3

Less than he'd hoped, as it turns out. Not even more than a hundred, and only three gold koins. He sighs; perhaps he grabbed more than he thought when he was escaping pursuit from that man he took them from.

Who even was that guy, Cao wonders? What was that strange ship he sailed in on, and who were his companions? Ah well, nobody too important, probably. Just another wandering band of weirdos.

Cao gathers up the koins and considers what to do with them next.

Cao takes the ten jade koins and slips them back into the bag, securing it tightly around his waist as he sits back and waits for his sisters.

About an hour later, he finds himself using a small nail to scratch a picture into the wall adjacent to his bed. Nothing specific, perhaps one of the beasts he saw in the marketplace, when suddenly he hears a startling cry.

He shoots straight up in his bed and he runs out of their home, listening closely. He hears the sounds of a struggle, and his little sister!

"Let go! Let go!" she shouts.

"Give it! I sssaw it firssst!"

Cao runs towards the sound and comes upon a larger junction. Hua is there, pulling on a bag that is in the hands of a lanky and repulsive-smelling lizardfolk. They thrive down here in this wet place---one of the hazards of hiding down here.

"It isss mine!" he hisses at her. Before Cao can intervene, the bag between them rips, most likely due to his claws, and the contents spill onto the floor; small rolls of bread. Hua falls back and crawls away as the mishapen lizard-man greedily claws at the food.

The reptillian howls in pain and slaps her away with his tail, causing her to hit the ground and skid a bit. Cao picks himself up and watches as the lizardfolk makes off with the bread. He'd like to chase the scum-sucking gutter trash down and knock out his teeth against the stone wall, but Hua could be hurt. He makes his way over to her quickly and helps her up.

"Are you okay?" he asks. She nods, rubbing a bruise on her arm. He looks at it as she reaches for her knife and puts it away.

"I wanted to bring bread home," she says, somewhat somber.

"That's okay," Cao says, tussling her hair a bit and giving her a hug. "Come on. I got some money today. I can go buy us some bread later."

She nods and holds his hand as they walk back to their home. Her eyes open wide as she sees the money on the table. "Wow! You got all this?"

Cao can't help but give her a sheepish grin. "Lucky haul today."

She gives the table a scan, counting the koins. She's much faster at counting than he is. "We can buy lotsa food with this!"

Cao smiles and regails her with the tale of how he was chased through the city by a man on fire and another who took after him with the power of flight. Twenty others joined in the chase and Kotal Kahn's guards got mixed up in it as well, but he outsmarted them all, leading them in circles!

Hua hugs her knees close to her chest and listens with wide eyes as he reaches the part about hideaway alley, where the strange wind-warrior cornered Hua and Cao threw the koin at him to distract him. She smiles as she recalls her experience on that side of the situation.

"They kept looking for me but I gave them the slip," Cao says with a smile. "You know why?" he asks with a wry grin.

"Nobody catches you!" she beams.

Cao is about to say that she's right when another voice speaks up. "Except your sister, you idiot."

Before he can turn around, Sanra steps in and whaps him across the skull. "Ow!" he shouts, rubbing his head. "What'd you do that fo--"

She whaps him again, causing Hua to gasp. Sanra never hit Cao more than once at a time!

"You idiot! Do you know what you did?!" Sanra sighs in frustation. "Hua, go for a walk, but don't go too far."

"But I--"

"Hua!" the eldest sibling says in a commanding voice. Without a moment's delay, she scampers out of view, but likely doesn't leave earshot.

Sanra grabs Cao by the ear and drags him up to his feet. "Do you KNOW who you STOLE from?" she says.

"Some guy! Who even cares?"

Sanra lets go and puts her face in her hands. "Oh, by the Elder Gods, why do I have to have such a foolish brother..."

She sits on her bed as Cao sits back down on his, rubbing his tender ear.

"I saw some money and went for it; it was right out there in the open so he probably didn't even want it."

"He chased you through the city!'

Cao shrugs. "So?"

She grips her hair in frustation. "Cao, you don't know what you've done this time. Draken says that--"

"Draken?" Cao interrupts her. "What were you talking to him for?"

"This isn't about Draken, Cao, it's about you! He says that Kotal Kahn has his guards out personally looking for you! YOU! Do you know who that guy was? He killed Shao Kahn!"

Regardless of any apathy Cao exhibits, she has his full attention now. "What?"

"And that woman with him was Princess Mileena, his daughter! From Edenia!"

"So that's why she had such an amazing ra--"

She's about to slap him again but he catches her wrist. She wrests it from him and looks at him, visibly agitated. "Cao, that man was here to see Kotal Kahn! He was his guest and now he's offering a personal reward for your capture!"

Cao sits back a bit, trying to maintain his disinterested nature, but deep inside her words are getting to him. He may have really stolen from the one who killed Shao Kahn...
>>
>>45366373

"Well... if I got away from him, he couldn't be that good," he says with a shrug.

"I swear, you make me want to pull out my hair sometimes," she says, getting up and pacing around. "You can't leave. You have to lay low. Maybe we can fake your death..."

"I don't want to do any of that," Cao says.

"Well I am not losing you and that's final!" she replies. "They say he wants to cut off your hands. Wasn't it enough that he cut out dad's heart?"

"Don't talk about that," Cao says, looking away.

Sanra sighs and walks over to the table, looking at the money. His eyes stray back over to her and he knows what she's thinking; this money wasn't worth the trouble.

Well, Cao's not too concerned. He's never been caught before, so why would it happen now? Even if they're looking for him...

Cao shrugs. "Alright, let's come up with a plan. Hey, maybe I can beat Kotal Kahn in Mortal Kombat and get out of punishment."

"Don't even," she says, pointing a finger back at him. "The 'plan' is that you're going to stay here, out of trouble and out of sight."

"Sounds like a boring plan," Cao replies with a roll of his eyes.

"I'm sure the treatment you'll get here is much, much worse than the torture at the hands of our dear Emperor," she says in a sarcastic tone. She gathers up the koins, bringing them over to a small chest hidden under her bed in a hole in the wall, opening it to place them inside, taking out a few. "I'm going to use these to buy food. Now I have to be three times as careful because they're looking for me, too, so I have to go to the markets I don't even know so nobody will recognize me."

"Oh no," Cao says, taking out a jade koin. He begins twirling it around his fingers, spinning it between the digits.

"Don't go anywhere, Cao. I mean it," she says in a firm tone.

>>45366572

Cao looks up at Sanra as she passes by. "Say... What were you doing with Draken, anyway?"

"Planning a heist," she says. "One that can actually get out of this city and on a boat. But that's all set back because you just had to rob a friend of the Emperor."

She leaves and Cao watches her go, wanting to retort but holding his tongue. She's angry and upset, but he knows that she loves and cares about him. He rubs his sore head---perhaps she cares a bit too much.

Slowly, Hua creeps back inside. Of course, she was listening.

"Are you in trouble?" she asks, afraid.

"No," Cao says with a disarming smile. "I'm sure it's nothing, it'll all blow over as soon as something comes along to distract the Kahn with. Don't worry."

She slowly nods and heads back over to the table, getting a book off the shelf to read.

Cao looks over at Hua and asks her what's she's reading. "It's about the Elder Gods," she says. "Wanna hear?"

He slowly averts his eyes, uncomfortable on the topic. "No, that's alright. Keep reading though, you'll grow up smart, unlike your brother," he says with a smile. "I'm going to go for a walk."

Hua nearly gets out of her chair, her face and voice full of concern as she says, "But Sanra said--"

"I'm not going anywhere! Just a little walk around. Don't worry. I won't leave the neighborhood."

She doesn't object, but is still worried nonetheless as he slips out. He needs a walk to clear his head.

Kotal Kahn, sending out for him personally... Well, he must be doing something right then, contrary to what Sanra thinks. Let the Kahn try and catch him, let him squeeze tighter and tighter and tighter... it'll only make it more easy to slip through his fingers.

And when the time is right...

Cao slams a fist into his open palm, imagining it to be the Emperor's stupid green face.

So what if they're out looking for him. They're not going to catch him, no matter how hard they try. Nobody can even sneak up on---

"Hey Cao."

The thief nearly jumps out of his skin and throws up his fists, ready to fight, as Draken steps out. He's tall, with a closely-shaved head and a neatly-trimmed beard, with a clean smile.

Cao hates that about him---he looks too clean to be a thief like him.

"Boy, I gotta hand it to you, you sure know how to stir up trouble. I didn't think you had it in you," he says with a smile.
>>
>>45367291

Cao drops his fists, but keeps them clenched. "What do you want, Draken?"

"I'm just here to let you know the price they're offering on your head. They're giving out koins to people who can tip off the guards to where you might be---you should see how many people who suddenly claim to have seen you are stepping up to get a share. But for someone who can bring you in... that's a hundred gold koins right there on the spot."

Cao looks away. A hundred gold...

Draken slaps him on the back. "But stealing from the man who helped kill Shao Kahn? That takes stones that not even I have."

Cao is silent and Draken studies his face. "Wait... You knew who he was, didn't you?"

Again, silence.

Draken busts out into laughter. "You didn't even know! Oh, that's rich! Well, it makes sense, I wouldn't have even known what he looks like, since it's been twenty years since he last showed up, but still! To think, you saw him step off his magic boat and think he'd be a good mark!"

"I got away, didn't I?" Cao says, annoyed at Draken's tone.

"For now," Draken replies. "Word on the street is that Kotal Kahn was personally offended. Like you stole the money straight from him by taking it from his guest."

"Don't talk about her," Cao interrupts him, turning around and shrugging his hand off his shoulder. He points a finger at his fellow thief. "Don't talk like you actually give a damn about her."

Cao ignores him and shoves past him, continually walking on, leaving him and his smug grin behind.

Cao wanders off in search of something to take out some frustration on.

As much as he curses the Elder Gods, it seems they are looking favorably upon him tonight, for after turning down a junction and crawling though an old pipe, he discovers the home of the very same lizardfolk he scrapped with earlier. He looks down and sees the thing lying on a makeshift bed of paper and straw, with the bread he took earlier lying nearby; one is easten and covered in slime, but the other loaf is still good.

The lizardman swipes at him with his claws, but Cao reaches down and grabs some of his bedding, throwing it up into his face! The temporary distraction allows Cao to move in close and grab his chest while also tucking a leg behind his. He pushes with his arms as he swipes his leg back, tripping the lizardfolk.

Cao looks around for something to use. He spies an old clay pot the lizard uses for a garbage bin and he picks it up. As the lizard shakes his head, he looks up at Cao with wide eyes as the outworlder brings the pot down on his head, smashing it to pieces and covering him with refuse. The lizardfolk falls down.

"It's not like you smell any worse," Cao sneers, tightening his fists and getting ready for round two.

The lizardman hisses at him, his tail whipping around violently as he gets on all fours before leaping towards Cao!

Cao leans down the picks up the untouched bread. He points it at the lizardfolk.

"Stay in your section of the sewers, lizard, or I'll do you worse."

He turns back and climbs up, smelling the bread once he's out of the lizard's foul-smelling den. Despite being held by the slimey claws, it still smells good.

Maybe one bite couldn't hurt...

By the time he's home, he's taken more than one bite. He only ate a third of it, though---he made sure to leave some for Sanra and Hua.

As he navigates the tunnels and corridors back home, something strange happens. He feels a slight shaking and dust falls from the ceiling; tiny pebbles falling from the roof and landing at his feet.

He looks up, confused. What was...

Suddenly, another ground-quake is felt, and then another, and then another! He hears the sound of stone cracking and his eyes widen.

Cao rolls to the side as a chunk of the ceiling above him falls off and crashes onto the ground. Had he been there, he would have been smashed!

He looks around. The earth is shaking; more cracks are forming!

He has to get home!

Cao dashes through the tunnels as they crumble around him. It stops, briefly, before returning even worse than before. Thunderous shakes rock the earth around him, cracking the stone walls.

Cao's heart races as he pictures Hua, huddled in their home, trapped by falling rocks... or worse.

He leaps over a fallen boulder of rock as more dust and pebbles fall from above.

This has never happened before---what is going on?!

>>45369473

Cao looks up as a piece of rock falls from above. He tries to dodge it but it comes too fast, hitting him and pinning his arm to the ground.

He shouts in pain and tries to push the rock off of him, to no avail.

Suddenly, Draken appears, stepping into a beam of light from a nearby crack in the ceiling. He sees Cao and rushes to help him, trying to yank the rock off. He gives it a few pulls and pushes, but it doesn't budge.

Draken looks down at Cao. "You're dead already," he mutters before giving up and running off into the clouds of dust kicked up by the quake.

"Draken! DRAKEN!" Cao shouts. His next shout isn't a name so much as a gutteral cry of fury and anger.

>>45369493

Cao looks at the boulder and grits his teeth, angling himself to get better leverage. He pours all of his strength into pushing it up, just enough to get his arm free.

His left arm is bloody and bruised and hurts like all hell, but he can feel it still. He shakes it off as he rolls up to a sitting position.

He gets up to his feet and runs, a bit slower than before.

He makes it home. "Hua?" he calls out. She sticks her head out from under her bed.

Cao picks up Hua and holds her close as he makes for the surface. She notices his arm.

"Cao... are you hurt?"

He ignores her as he carries her out into the tunnel, leaving their hideout and money behind. He briefly stops. The money... He looks at Hua and shakes his head; there's no time to crawl under Sanra's bed and reach into the hole in the wall. He promises that he'll come back for it later.

He runs towards a large mote of light; part of the ceiling has fallen away, exposing the surface.

He lifts her up to the hole before he jumps up and grabs onto its edge. Hua begins to pull him up as he climbs.

They make it onto the surface and look around. At first, nothing happens, but then another earthquake erupts from a nearby falling building, accompanied by a massive explosion! Fire surges up into the sky.

Then, two figures come into view, crashing through a building. One if the fiery man who nearly burnt Cao earlier today! The other one is a massive man made out of stone, who seems to be the source of these quakes!

Cao picks up Hua and books it in the opposite direction.

Cao and Hua run towards the outskirts of town, away from the titanic clash. There, they huddle in an alleyway, listening for signs of what is happening.

Other people run around them, screaming, looking for shelter. Cao tries to remain calm and focus his head. His arm is throbbing and parts of it are swollen, but he pushes it out of his mind. Hua shivers in fear.

"Do you think our home is gone?" she asks.

"I don't know," he replies. "I hope not..."

He swears, if it is, he's going to tear every stone out until it isn't again... Or make Draken do it.

Draken... He ran, just like Cao knew he would. The next time he sees that Netherrealm-bound bastard...

It takes an hour or so, but the shaking stops. Whispers from around seem to indicate that the two were led away. Cao peeks his head out into the street and he sees hundreds of guards and other soldiers running towards the main gates of the city. Leaving... following those two, perhaps?

With so few guards in the city... perhaps there's room for opportunity.

Cao puts Hua on his back and she wraps her arms tightly around his neck. He leaps up and grabs onto a window before pulling himself and her up to a narrow ledge. From here, he shimmies across to a gap and jumps onto an adjacent rooftop.

He sets her down and tells her not to move, and that he'll be right back. She nods and he moves out.

He reaches the edge of one of the rooftops near the damaged areas and looks down. There are no guards in sight; they're almost all outside of the city to the east. The ruined markets are full of broken or abandonned stalls. This could be a chance to snag some food for Hua...

Cao jumps down into the market and begins looking around. He hears a scream from nearby and turns to see a man, looks like a worker, trying to move stones out of the way from a doorway. "Help!" he cries to one on in particular. "My son is trapped! Help!"

Cao looks around. He sees a half-broken stand with some good food around it. There are other scavengers like him in the market; it won't be long before it's picked clean or the guards come back to restore order...

'I have my own family to worry about,' Cao thinks. 'Don't even know that man...'

Cao ignores the plight of the man and gathers up some food in a bag he takes from one of the stalls. Fruits, vegetables and some dried meats; a decent haul, if nothing else.

As he turns down an alleyway, he suddenly sees Sanra, and she him. Her eyes go wide and she runs towards him. 'Oh, here we go...' he thinks to himself, preparing to be admonished for leaving.

Instead she throws her arms around him in a tight hug. "Cao! Thank goodness you're alright! What about Hua? Is she safe?"

He nods. "Come on, I'll take you to her," he says. The two of them scale the walls of the alley to the roof and he leads her over to Hua. Sanra runs up to their sister and hugs her just as tightly.

"We couldn't stay underground," he says to her. "The hideout... everything was falling."

"I saw," she says. "I was making my way back when it happened." She looks back up at him. "Kotal Kahn has left the city. All of his warriors are gone, too."

"Might give us a chance to get somewhere safe," he says with a shrug.

Sanra thinks for a moment. "Or... Or, we could move ahead with the heist Draken and I have been planning." She thinks. "This might be our only shot! Now that I know you two are safe, we can try to make the most out of this opportunity."

"What is this heist, anyway?"

"Draken found a way into Countess Mira's estate."

"The Kahn's treasurer?"

"Exactly. Her home is well-defended by her own personal guards... but only on the outside. She hates company in her home. Draken found his way inside from a secret entrance and he wants our help to steal as much gold from her as possible."

Cao scratches her chin. Countess Mira is known to be one of the richest nobles in all of Z'unkahrah, and as such, she is Kotal Kahn's personal treasurer, ensuring the stocking and protection of the royal treasury...

Sanra smiles up at him. "Think about it. All the gold in her home, maybe even some priceless art. We steal it, we fence it properly, slowly... and then we get on a boat and get out of here at last."

Rumors surround Countess Mira. Whispers of strange things going on in her home... But Cao never put much faith in rumor. Likely, they just sprang up because she's reclusive, and reclusiveness always breeds rumors. It doesn't help that she rarely makes public appearances.

"I don't like Draken being involved, we can't trust him," Cao says. "He left me for dead down in the tunnels." He shows her his arm, and she gasps a bit and looks it over. "A rock fell on me and he gave up trying to move it. Told me I was 'dead already' and ran off."

Sanra is quiet. "Well... I'm sure he had his reasons. Everything was chaotic..."

Cao shakes his head. He had a feeling she would try and excuse his behavior.

"And he came up with the heist originally," she points out.

"About two weeks. We've been planning it for a while, and he's been scoping out the area, making sure he knows what we'd be getting into."

"But did he bring anything back as proof he was there? Did he use it himself?"

"He showed it to me," Sanra says. "Look, Cao, I know you don't trust him, but can you at least trust me? I've seen the secret entrance. It's in some kind of old tomb underneath her estate, it leads right up inside through a hidden trap door."

"Well, we shouldn't let him in on it, then. Or we should at least worry about ourselves first and get somewhere safe. At least Hua."

"What? No! That's not what I--"

She interrupts him by placing two hands on his shoulders. "Cao, listen! This might be our best chance at getting out of here! There's nothing I want more than to get you both somewhere that we don't have to live as thieves with guards looking for our necks."

Cao looks away. "I know you don't care too much about anything other than the moment, but I'm trying to look out for our future," Sanra says in a soft tone. "Please get Hua somewhere safe. I'll get the money."

Cao doesn't immediately reply. Sanra pulls him into a hug. "I love you, little brother," she says before pulling away and moving off.

Cao shakes his head. "If you get trapped or stuck back there I couldn't do anything," he tells her. "It's too dangerous. Come on."

Hua nods and climbs onto his back again as they make their way to the surface. Cao remembers that he still has those ten jade koins, so at least he isn't completely without money, but still, to think that their stash is buried under rock and stone...

'Damn the Elder Gods,' he thinks to himself.

He carries Hua to the alley he hid in earlier from the man he stole from. Hua knows her way well around this place, so she will be safe. He runs there as fast as he can, observing that many people are still trying to clean up the streets or move rubble out of the way.

He keeps his head low, knowing that the Kahn's offer isn't likely to be off the table yet.

After working his way around to the alley, he drops Hua off here and tells her to stay put. "Is everything going to be okay?" she asks.

"I'll make sure Sanra will come back," Cao promises.

"I meant you," she says in a worried tone. Cao leans over and kisses her forehead, giving her a reassuring smile before tussling her hair.

"I always make it back, don't I?" he asks.

Cao searches around the fountain and stumbles upon something strange; a hand that looks like a lever. He grabs the hand by the wrist and pulls it down, and a nearby stone moves out of the way, revealing a staircase.

Curiously, he moves down into the passage, and it closes behind him. He spies another lever that can be used to open it from this side.

He moves down the stairs and discovers that it opens to a wide series of chambers and passageways. Thick cobwebs can be seen, along with dim torches in the distance. He carefully makes his way down the dusty stairs of the winding chamber he finds himself in and is startled when a series of four-winged bats fly out of a nearby hole, screeching as they fly past him, but do not otherwise harm him.

No sign of Sanra or Draken if they came this way...

Cao's heart races in his chest as he holds the torch up. This place must be riddled with traps if something so mundane as a single torch was left with such a deadly device...

He looks down the hall and walks forward a bit, taking care with each and every step to not get caught by another trap. Tense and ready for anything, he keeps going.

He passes by ancient coffins and large structures long ago sealed. He spies several more suspicious things that could be traps, such as odd tiles on the ground, and so he keeps clear of them.

'Where are you, Sanra...' he thinks to himself.

He comes to a large chamber, larger than any other. He sees a ladder that must lead up to the countess' estate, but also he spies a small pond. Upon closer inspection, it appears to be a pond of blood, with skull imagery carved along the walls and in the stutues that line this room.

Cao moves up to look inside the pool, holding the torch over it. The surface is smooth and undisturbed. The blood is a deep crimson, almost mirror-like as he glimpses himself within it.

He feels a strange compulsion to reach out and touch it. Just a finger...

He touches it and the blood begins to move. His eyes widen as it swirls around and bubble. He steps back as it darkens in the center.

Suddenly, it explodes from within, sending red droplets flying everywhere as a figure emerges. Cao covers his face as parts of him are showered with the blood.

He looks up and sees a skeleton there, animated, with red glowing eyes, dripping with blood. It opens its mouth as if to howl but no noise emerges as it reaches out to grasp at him!

Cao decides to wait for a while. He sits on the ground, idly poking the dead skeleton's body with the torch, burning it a bit to make sure that it doesn't spring back up to life.

Cao sighs as his worry grows. Nobody shows up after a while and he can only imagine where Sanra is. Maybe she's back at the fountain, or she went back to look for him and Hua elsewhere, or...

Suddenly, there is a noise from above. Before Cao has a chance to hide, none other than Draken climbs down the ladder. He steps off and freezes when he sees Cao, his eyes wide and somewhat confused. Cao panics and kicks up with his foot, planting it on the man's chest and kicking him backwards. Draken lets go and some distance between them is obtained as Cao coughs.

Draken leaps and grabs the torch from the skeleton's corpse and holds it up. In his other hand, he uses his magic to summon a glowing blue throwing knife---his signature spell. "You're not supposed to be here..." he says again.

"San...ra..." he chokes out. "Dan...ger..."

Cao lifts up the torch to let him speak, but he's passed out. He slaps him a few times and even splashes blood on him from the pool, but nothing seems to snap him out of his stupor.

Cao looks up at the ladder. Is Sanra there... and in danger?

Cao ignores him. Not his family, not his problem. He rushes up to the ladder and climbs up.

The trap door at the top is unlocked, and so he pushes it open to discover what looks to be an abandonned home. It is dusty, with broken furniture and no signs of life. Cao's eyes narrow. This can't be the home of the countess... she's wealthy.

He looks out the window and into the courtyard. He's seen the house from the outside, and sure enough, this is her estate... but everything is wrong.

He sneaks through the lower levels, finding each room to be similar to the last. He suddenly freezes when he hears a noise from upstairs, like creaking floorboards. Someone is home...

Cao waits, very still. He tries to listen for more noise. He follows the sounds of the footsteps above, ending up in some kind of dining room. He looks up at a hole in the ceiling.

He hears a strange noise, like a muffled protest, and then heavy breathing. Small drips of blood suddenly start falling from above, onto the wooden table.

Then, Cao hears moaning... Not moans of pain, but pleasure, and he recognizes the voice. It's Sanra. She's in the room above him, gasping and letting out soft, low moans.

What the hell is going on? Is she in danger? Is that her blood that is dripping down?

Cao quietly sneaks upstairs, avoiding any loud or loose boards. He reaches the room where he hears his sister's moans and peeks through the open door.

Countess Mira is there, behind Sanra. The older woman's mouth is wrapped around Sanra's neck, suckling on it. His sister gasps and her eyes rolls backwards, up towards the ceiling, glossy and dull. The countess has her arms wrapped around Sanra possessively, gently holding her and supporting her. Sanra moans a little louder as Mira's head moves away; the thief gives a mewl of disappointment and longing, wanting her to continue.

Cao's eyes widen as he sees Mira's fangs glinting in the darkness, covered in Sanra's blood. Two puncture holes on Sanra's neck can be seen. "Shhh, my dear..." Mira whispers, licking the wounds, causing her to shiver in the woman's arms.

"More, please, more..." Sanra begs.

"That's it..." Mira says again as she opens her mouth and prepares to continue feeding.

Cao immediately busts in the door, causing Mira to nearly drop Sanra in surprise. The vampire looks up at Cao with wide, red eyes as he moves in to attack, picking up a nearby chair!

Mira holds up Sanra as a shield between them both. He stops, looking at his older sister; she's under the same kind of stupor that Draken was under, but isn't violent, possibly because of her drained blood.

"You can attack me, if you so choose," Mira says. "But I know who you are, little boy... Your sweet, dear sister has told me much of you..."

Cao keeps his fists held up, ready to attack as Mira peeks over her shoulder at him, her eyes glaring in the darkness.

"Let go of her you fiend," Cao says.

"Fiend? Is it fiendish to be hungry?" she asks with a smile. "You're often hungry, aren't you? You strive so hard to help feed your sisters..."

"Stop talking! Let her go and fight me!" Cao says.

She makes a display of her finger, and the sharp claw-like nail upon it. She draws it across Sanra's neck. "One swipe, and she's dead. I'd hate to spill so much tasty, delicious blood in such a way... and I know you don't want her to die, do you?"

Cao stays tense, terrified for Sanra's life. She's hypnotized, completely helpless in the arms of her captor.

"Now then, to business..." she says, licking her lips. "It just so happens, my tasty little boy... I have need of a thief."

"Let go of her, and then I'll listen," Cao says.

Mira laughs. "Let go? How silly you are. You're not in a position to demand anything, thief. I, however, am in a position to return your sister's life to you."

Sanra tries to speak, but words fail her. She holds out a hand towards Cao, but Mira's own arm snakes up and she intwines her fingers around Sanra's. Mira turns towards her and kisses her neck, causing her to shiver and moan some more.

"Stop that!" Cao says as Mira teasingly looks at him, enjoying the torment it is bringing him. He holds up the chair and considers attacking again when Mira stops and speaks.

"You want her to live, yes? I will return her to you, alive and well, if you do as I say."

Cao grits his teeth, torn between his loyalty and love for his sister and his desire to not see her in this thing's hands.

"Firstly, put down the chair."

Slowly, he sets it down.

"Good... Now then, are you going to do what I say? I told you I am in need of a thief. Sweet, delectable sister here has told me that you were the one the Kahn put a bounty out for... the thief who stole from none other than Akayama Kaito..."

"Yeah, so what?" Cao asks, still highly on edge.

"I am in need of a thief as skilled... or as stupid... as you. At first, I considered your sister, but her blood is just so delicious, I can hardly keep my hands off of her..."

She opens her mouth, revealing her fangs again as she goes for another bite.

Cao's hand uncurls. "I'll do what you say," he says, holding up both hands. "Just please don't hurt her."

"I'm not hurting her," Mira says with a seductive smile. "Listen to the sweet sounds she makes... You know, she willingly fell into my arms. I think she likes this more than you know..."

"Shut up," he says. "Tell me what you want me to steal. Why do you even need a thief? Aren't you rich?"

"All the riches in a kingdom can't buy some treasures," Mira says. "Especially ones that are invaluable... Now, listen closely."

Cao does just that she she adjusts Sanra in her arms, still holding onto her tightly. "I have need of something special from my dear sister. She has an amulet, a magical thing, that gives her a great power. I want it for my own but she would just as soon surrender her life as her amulet."

"Then why make me do it? Sounds like you need her killed."

"I have use of her. There aren't many of us left, you know... the moroi. Vampires, children of the night, drinkers of blood... And after all, we do love our sisters..." she says as she plants a long, slow kiss to Sanra's neck, suckling gently, causing the girl to melt in her arms in pleasure, "...don't we? I don't want my sister dead, but I want her amulet. You will steal it for me."

"And where is she?"

"She lairs to the south, in the Living Forest. Her home is a cavern, and she preys upon the beasts and men who wander too closely to her domain."

"And just how am I supposed to steal the amulet from her? I'm guessing she doesn't just leave it lying around."

"She slumbers during the day. Find her during the hours when the sun is high and she will be slumbering. Simply steal the amulet from around her neck and be done with it."

Cao thinks her words over. "I need to know Sanra won't be harmed. I can't trust you, seeing that you can't stop snacking on my sister, you man-sized leech."

Mira smirks and gives a small shrug. "You have my word that I'll restrain myself from feeding on her until your return. But if you take too long, I just might lose control... With such succulent blood, and such a willing young girl to grant it..."

"Don't," Cao warns her. "I'll return with the amulet, and if Sanra isn't the way I left her now... I'll shove it down your throat and rip it out your neck."

Mira smiles as Cao moves for the door. "Don't keep her waiting," she calls after him.

Cao slams a fist against a wall and curses his fortune. To think, earlier today everything seemed to be going so well...

Take Draken.

This isn't a charity move. He can show that he cares about our sister, or at least he won't be lying around to become a thrall or ghoul or whatever these vampires hold.

Angry, Cao climbs down the ladder and finds Draken, in the middle of waking up. He kicks the older thief in the stomach.

"Do you know what you did?!" Cao says, grabbing him by the collar. "My sister is being fed on by that thing up there! And it's your fault!"

"I didn't... know," he says, coughing. "I didn't know, I swear..."

Cao shakes him a bit. "Well, you're going to help me get her back. She's going to return Sanra if we steal something from another vampire."

Draken's eyes go wide. "No! Not another one!"

Cao slaps him across the face. "Shut up! This was your heist, your fault! Now, if you give a single damn about Sanra, you're going to prove it by helping me! Understood?"

Slowly, Draken nods. Cao lets go and stands up. "Now pick yourself up, we're leaving."

"What? Where?"

"Out of the city, to the Living Forest," he says.

As Draken picks himself up and walks after him. "The Living Forest? They say it's haunted, cursed by undead spirits living in the trees! We can't go there!"

Cao turns around, his fist curled. "That's right, and if you don't want me to punch you in the gut so hard your eyes shoot from your stupid skull, you're going to shut up and help me get there."

Draken is silent as they make their way out of the tunnel and out of the fountain's secret passage.

"She's safe," Cao says. "She's just looking for a new home." It breaks his heart to lie to her, but she believes him. "Now, I need to go do something, and I might be gone for a bit."

He takes out the ten jade koins in the bag and hands them to her. "Use these if you get hungry. Don't let anyone rip you off, always get a good deal. And if you can't, take what you need when they aren't looking."

"Okay," she says, taking the koins. "Is everything alright?"

"It will be soon," he says, pressing his forehead against hers. "Stay safe, Hua. No matter what, stay safe, alright?"

"I will," she promises.

Cao nods and gives her a smile. "I'll see you soon."

Cao and Draken wait patiently for a cart to head out of town. Once they spy one, they wait for their opportunity and jump onto the back of it. It's a cargo cart being pulled by a pair of bovine hooved animals with horns and tusks. Cao and Draken quickly hide under a blanket.

Eventually, they hear the sounds of the city fade from their ears as the wagon leaves the city gates and heads west. They both lift up the blanket and hop out the back, turning to watch the wagon go off without them.

Cao turns his eyes south, towards the Living Forest. This is the first time he'll have ever ventured into such a place...

"This is a bad idea," Draken says. "Maybe we should go back. Get some weapons..."

"Come on," Cao says. "Sanra's as good as dead if we don't."

Draken curses his luck as they begin their trek south towards the massive, foreboding, green forest, whose twisted trees are shrouded by thick fog.

Cao has to find Nitara's lair, and soon...

it was really good. I liked the look on the story from another perspective, and starting the adventure of the second protagonist with the indirect actions of the first.

I have to ask; Is is a coincidence that both Cao's and Kaito's first adventure involved stealing magical shit from dangerous people.

Definitely, I can promise you that the next thread will feature some more characters that the audience is familiar with but who Cao has never met. I've already teased Nitara, and I'm excited to say that a certain demon will appear as well.

Also, with each quest, the official thread document will grow as new information comes out on the various characters Cao meets and interracts with.
