"Well aren't they going to be the ones gathering it while I fight anyway?" Kiba asks. "If they can do it, I don't see the problem, I'll just get it from them."

"You need to actually be able to go into Sage Mode first, you idiot." Sasuke replies. "Unless you like the idea of turning into a statue."

Those two go on, while you make your way over to Kakashi. He puts his book down as he greets you.

"Good morning, Kon." your teacher waves. "Looks like your ready for the third step. This one is far harder than the other two, so it will likely take much longer. You'll figure it out, though."

Kakashi reaches into a bucket and pulls out a regular balloon, then tosses it to you.

"The first step was to use your chakra to cause the rotating motion." your teacher explains. "Then you had to get used to putting more power into it. For this last step, you need to combine them, but also to completely refine your control. If you pop the balloon, you did it wrong. You need to keep the swirling ball of chakra condensed. Try it, and you'll see what I mean."

You grip the balloon and start focusing your chakra like before.

If you put too little power in it, it won't form at all, but it's difficult to keep the necessary power condensed enough to keep the balloon unpopped. After a while, you are forced to take a break.

"Not a whole lot." Kiba sighs. "I can feel it now, but gathering it is tough. I guess I'm just not good at it. Akamaru is making headway, though. Sasuke even had to stop him from turning to stone at one point! So I know if he can do it, so can I."

You all finish eating and get back to your training. You pull out another balloon and try again.

You think carefully about what Sasuke said. As you hold out your hand with the balloon in it, you imagine that point in the center of your palm. Focusing your chakra around that point, and spinning it as tightly and strongly as you can.

The strain is great, but you can see it. Inside the balloon, a swirling mass of chakra has formed. A perfect sphere. The Rasengan.

Sasuke shoots up from next to Kiba, where he was sitting.

"This has to be a joke!" he shouts. "It's been two days!"

"It's no joke, Sasuke." your teacher responds, eyes wide. "He really did it already. Unbelievable."

You try it again, making sure to do the same thing as last time. It's just as much of a strain as before, but you manage to do the very same thing. You start trying it without the balloon, and manage to form the rasengan in your hand. It's hard to keep it steady, especially while moving, but a bit more practice will fix that.

In a couple more hours, you're forming rasengans nearly as easily as Sasuke or Kakashi Sensei.

"Well, that's that." your teacher says. "You learned the rasengan. Just like that. Now the question is if you want to cut out the middleman and try to infuse your release into the rasengan, or just use the shape manipulation you learned to create an entirely new technique. They are both difficult, but the first has the potential to be done faster. If you can find out a way to do it, like Sasuke did."

Idea someone came up with a few threads back, basically our own bootlegged Dust Release, an inverted Rasengan sucking matter in and disintegrating it with shockwaves. I'm not quite sold on the idea, but I would rather make our own move using the Rasengan's principles rather than just make a direct elemental Rasengan.

We should see if we can develop our fuinjutsu skills enough for Tenten to teach us the Flying Thunder God. Because not only would that make us incredibly powerful, but it would also be pretty fun for interacting with Kurotsuchi. You're not tired enough for that. You meditate for a while, then go into Sage Mode.

You start by projecting your Impact chakra, then trying to manipulate its shape. For one thing, Impact chakra doesn't seem to like to move in curves. From what you can tell, it loves straight lines.

You try a whole bunch of different movements, but eventually wear yourself out. As you lay on the ground, you see Neji come into view.

"You look like you're working hard." he tells you, before turning to your teammates. "You guys can head home, I'll take care of him."

"You got it, Neji." Sasuke responds. "Thanks. And make sure he doesn't try to train again as soon as we leave."

Your teammates all take off, while Neji helps you up and leads you to the restaurant.

"I had the evening off and wanted to eat here, anyway." Neji says, setting you down in a seat and taking one for himself. "So I figured I'd come get you first."

Wouldn't really work. Strong Fist is a hard style based around closed hand strikes. Gentle Fist is a soft style based around open hands. Trying to put the force of a Strong Fist blow into a Gentle Fist movement would break your hand, and trying to use the precision of a Gentle Fist strike into a Strong Fist punch wouldn't let you inject the chakra properly.

Nope. It's not clear where Wave is, but it's definitely closer to Konoha than it is to Kiri. The Great Kaiza Bridge (Great Naruto Bridge, in canon) connects Wave to Fire, where Konoha is. So they're somewhere off our coast, close enough that a bridge is possible to build. That's far away from Water Country.

You get to bring any three people of your choice. You think it over. There are plenty of people to consider, but you eventually narrow it down.

Shikamaru is an obvious choice. His analytical skill will surely help you no matter what. He even offered to help. Sasuke is your next thought. Now that he's the head of the Uchiha Clan, he should have quite a bit of influence. If he shows up in the Mist, they'll know just how serious you are. The third member takes a bit longer to decide. You think over a lot of options, but settle on Sakura. She is a student of Tsunade like you, and that should offer her some measure of respect from the Mizukage. Plus you told Sakura you'd help get her some time with Sasuke, and this could do just that.

"I'll bring Shikamaru, Sasuke, and Sakura." you tell Neji. "That will be my team."

"That should work." Neji replies. "Lord Itachi will miss having Shikamaru around for a while, but we can spare him. Sasuke is doable, but there are some concerns. He needs to be back in time to compete, of course. Speed on this mission will be of the utmost priority. There are no issues with bringing Sakura. I'll let the Hokage know about your decision."

Your uncle arrives with your food, and sets it on the table. You and Neji both begin eating.

The two of you finish your meal, and Neji takes off, wishing you farewell.

It's late, but you could potentially still talk to all the team members to see if they can be ready by tomorrow.

We know enough. We know that he's a nihilist, and doesn't consider humans able to do good on their own. You and Shikamaru say goodbye, then you head quickly to the Uchiha compound. You knock to find Sasuke, and explain the situation. He agrees immediately.

"No problem." Sasuke says. "I can ask Master Jiraiya to keep an eye on Kiba while he trains, so I'm good to go."

With that done, you head to Sakura's house. It takes you a bit, since you only know the vague location, but you find it. You knock to find Sakura at the door.

"Kon?" she asks, surprised. "Never expected to see you here this late. Did you need something?"

Sakura says good bye, then hurriedly shuts the door and takes off further into her house.

With that settled, all of your teammates are accounted for. You head home and pack before it gets too late. As you're packing, your uncle comes in.

"Going away for another mission already, huh?" he asks, leaning against the doorway.

Your uncle heads down to the kitchen and starts fixing some things. You chip in and help.

Soon enough, you have everything ready, and get to sleep for the night.

The next morning, you get up, eat, wish your uncle goodbye, and take your things. Your team is waiting outside the restaurant, and you hand them the food you and your uncle made.

"Thanks." Shikamaru says, as he packs it away. "There's something to look forward to as we travel."

You think over if there are any last things to be done before you leave.

You knock on the door to find Ino. You ask for Haku, and she leaves to bring him. Soon enough, he arrives.

"Hello Kon, Shikamaru." he greets. "Can I help you?"

"I had some questions about the Mist." you start. "I know it's been a long time since you lived in the Water Country, but we're on a diplomatic mission. Is there anything useful you can tell us to potentially help get the Mist to cooperate with us? I can understand if you don't want to talk about it, though."

Haku's smile fades just a bit.

"I'm afraid I can't help you much." he begins. "When I lived a proper life there, it was in a small village, and I was very young. Afterwards, I lived on the streets, fighting to survive. Any insight I could give you from that time would be far too skewed. Everyone seemed cold at that time. I didn't get much of a different impression the last time I went, but I do hope your mission goes well. I hope I can one day return to the place I once called home, and see it as a better place than I remember."

It's regrettable that Haku doesn't have anything for you, but he seems to be more sorry himself that he has nothing worthwhile to say.

"Don't worry about it." you insist. "Thanks anyway. We'll do our best."

You and Shikamaru say farewell, then head to the village gate where Sasuke and Sakura are waiting. The four of you all make sure one last time that you are ready, then head on your way. To the Village Hidden in the Mist, and a hopeful bid for a crucial alliance.
