You are Captain SAMANTHA WELLINGS, a newly minted captain of the Centauri Accord!

Currently, you've managed to ace a couple of test sims thrown at you by Frolaytia as you and your crew were getting familiarized with the control system. Frolaytia leads you out of the simulation bridge, leaving your crew to further get the hang of the systems.

"Well, now that we've got that sorted out, all that's left is to decide on the final refit." Frolaytia grins. "You seem to have taken to the Ion Cannon rather well. I suppose you'd like to keep it?"

ION CANNON: Typically a weapon used on larger capital ships, Accord engineers have managed to miniaturize the standard ion cannon to a size where a destroyer could mount one. However, the weapon still runs the length of the hull, limiting its firing arc, and it has a large flux generation rate. However, very few things hit by this weapon survive the initial shot. 30 flux per shot.

FUSION BLASTER: Using powerful electromagnetic fields, a fusion explosion is artificially created and then focused into a single beam. Since the beam is focused through EM fields, there is no physical turret which gives the weapon a wide firing arc. However, the beam quickly loses energy as it travels, making it more effective as a close range weapon. 15 flux per shot.

PLASMA CASTER: Rather than a singular weapon, the plasma caster is in fact numerous projectors that fire large bolts of plasma. This allows for targeting of multiple enemies and more efficient firing, but has lower attack power. 5 flux per shot.

So guys, should we keep the lasers or switch to missiles, knowing that we'll replenish our stock between combat missions?
>>

>>
>>45266948
Missiles, lasers make us too reliant on flux.
>>
>>45266948
I'd prefer missiles. Something to help reduce our Flux generation seems mighty helpful, from what we saw in the sims. I'd love the chance to upgrade our missile capacity sometime later, if we can work that in as the story progresses.
>>
>>45266948
I'm going to vote missiles. We seem to use the ion cannon well, but lasers build up too much flux. We'll probably just use the missiles defensively, so little fear of running out in the middle of combat.

"Yeah, the Ion Cannon gives us some serious hitting power." You nod in agreement. "And it looks like not even the Hegemony really as a good answer for it, at least not their destroyer classes."

"For now, yes. But the Hegemony has proven time and time again that they're remarkably resilient." Frolaytia nods. "How about your secondary system? The lasers seem to serve you well, but would you like to change those?"

LASER DEFENSE SYSTEM: An array of laser emitters placed at strategic areas of the ship give wide coverage to fight threats too close or out of the line of fire of the ship's primary weapon. Very effective against small craft and incoming missiles, but individual beams have difficulty penetrating armor, especially at long ranges. 2 flux per shot.

UNIVERSAL MISSILE SYSTEM: A series of small missiles launchers placed on strategic points on the ship, the UMS can fire dozens of small, highly maneuverable missiles capable of bringing down small ships and enemy missiles. Limited missile capacity but does not generate flux. 48 missiles capacity.

PHOTON TORPEDO LAUNCHER: A much harder hitting projectile than the standard missile, the photon torpedo is essentially a rocket motor sheathed in a coat of high intensity plasma and other exotic energies. Causes extremely high damage, but the energy sheath has the negative effect of blinding onboard guidance systems, restricting this weapon to straight trajectories only. 24 torpedoes.

For Tank's suit, perhaps to continue along the Mass Effect strain of aesthetic, perhaps take more from the Turian and Krogan armors? He's a big guy, those armors can get to hamtastically huge levels.

"I'm actually kinda leaning more towards the missile system." You remark. "That Ion Cannon generates flux like crazy, and the laser arrays don't help."

"Understandable." Frolaytia nods. "You are free to build it however you want, after all."

"Right." You sigh. "So anything else?"

"Well, since you're taking out a new ship, Command has seen fit to grant a special system to field test." Frolaytia hands you a small holographic datapad, lines of code and schematics scrolling by on it. "Take your pick."

DRONE FIGHTER BAY: A small module that holds a squadron of 12 automated drone fighters armed with basic lasers. Also includes repair and fabrication facilities to replenish losses in between battles.

QUANTUM SHIFT: A highly experimental technology, this device allows the ship to effectively "teleport" short distances. It's not replacement for conventional FTL since it generates massive amounts of flex, but is useful in a pinch. 50 Flux per use.

NANOARMOR: Using the latest developments in nanotechnolgy and smart alloys, a special treatment on a ship's hull allows it to slowly regenerate damage over time, even in the midst of battle.

We can instantly flank anyone, can ambush better, are able to dodge torpedoes in a ridiculously unfair way, and can catch up to faster ships that we'd otherwise lose a long term chase with.

Seriously, in Sins of a Solar Empire the Vasari Loyalist Titan has this ability and it's fucking terrifying. That's a much larger ship, but it's actually even more useful for us because now we have *teleports behind you* powers.

>NANOARMOR

More than anything else, the weakness of ships like this are the lack of armor due to the emphasis on the shields. If the Energy source is limitless, the weapons replenishable, and the armor self-repairing, then this would be the ship that can fight forever!

Also, plz no quantum, if only because of how much flux that uses, yeesh.

Oh wait, if we can choose to take more of the less damaging hits in combat because we know we can regen from the smaller amounts of damage, wouldn't
t that mean we would have more flux to use for the weapons and the movement boost system? cmon guys, armor!

I've had it in my head that the Hegemony, in keeping with their UNSC inspiration, have their armors be teh battle dress used by the UNSC--Halo 3 or Reach UNSC armor, not that dorky shit they were wearing in Halo 4.

The Confederacy is gonna be the hardest of the three to peg down, seeing as we still haven't seen eye nor ear of them. Might be worht looking at Planetside's NC MAX suits, or at the other end of the spectrum they could be something more in line with Starcraft's Marines. They probably have the largest amount of free reign if anything, artfag.
>>
>>45267943
"The Nanoarmor sounds useful." You say, looking at the specs. "Would cut down on repair costs."

"Assuming you take enough damage to make up for the cost." Frolaytia gives an ironic grin. "The application and material processes alone cost almost three times as much as the ship, and let's not even get into the all of the accumulated R&D costs..."

Jeez, just how much money did these Accord guys have to throw around...?

"Well then, your refit should be complete, then!" Frolaytia turns off the holopad and slides it back into her pocket. "So, do would you like to begin preparations to leave, or do you still have any business on Earth to take care of?

Hm, well, honestly, outside of your crew, there actually wasn't really anybody on Earth you knew. At least not intimately. Then again, there were probably a few SolSec buddies you could see off, but still...

"Captain, we're ready launch when you are." Bradford states loyally as you enter the bridge.

As per protocol, your crew salutes you as you enter. They usually don't do this all the time, but this was a special occasion. You were breaking in a new ship, after all. You return the salute, and they all return to their duty stations, working their holographic interfaces.

And finally, FINALLY, you sit down in the chair.

And HOLY SHIT does it feel comfortable! Frolaytia had told you that the captain's chairs were all designed after careful study to find the most comfortable and ergonomic configuration for the human body. She had even gone the extra mile and had it built to be custom sized to your rather "smaller than average" build. NOT THAT YOU WERE INSECURE ABOUT THAT OR ANYTHING...

"Cap? We ready to hit the road?" Amy asks as she turns her head from her control station.

"Just a second." You say as you look to Lida. "Are connected to Control?"

"Yes, Captain. They should be able to hear you now." Lida nods in response.

"Control, this is Gullinbursti, requesting permission to launch." You say.

"Gullinbursti, this is Control. Permission is granted. Locks have been disengaged. You are free to go. Good luck out there."

"Thanks, Control." You grin as Lida cuts the connection. You turn to the rest of your crew. "All right, stations sound off. Go or no go?"

"Navigation is go." Amy reports.

"Sensors and comms are go." Lida says flatly.

"Weapons are go." Elsa says cheerfully.

"Propulsion is go." Scott reports from his station back in the reactor room.

"Medical is go." Natalia purrs over the comm.

"Bridge is go, all systems nominal." Bradford concludes. "Captain?"

"All right." You grin as you lean back in your chair. "Amy, launch!"

"Aye, Cap!" Amy smiles in anticipation as she powers up the Gullinbursti's engines, and the whole ship begins to glide forwards smoothly as it clears the dock.

"Heh, you're doing a lot better than last time." Elsa chuckles. "Hey Lida, remember when she forgot to turn off the inertial brake?"

"Oh yes, and then she accidentally put the ship in reverse thrust to try and disengage it and accidentally rammed the dock."

"Heh, good times."

"NOW IS NOT THE TIME!" Amy snaps.

By this point, the Gullinbursti had already cleared the dock and was heading for open space to the nearest FTL jump point.

"Incoming transmission from Control, Captain." Lida reports.

You nod as you bring it up. Almost immediately, Frolaytia's holographically rendered face fills the air in front of you.

"It's good to see that your ship launched without any hitches. Though uncommon, you know how it is, new ships and new crews... mistakes could happen..."

You would love to see Amy's face during this. You were certain her eyebrow was twitching like crazy.

"Anyways, I'm transmitting the coordinates for you first assignment." Frolayia continues. "Our primary colony on the Frontier, Eridani, will be your base of operations. You can head there to get settled in or..."

You see as that familiar devious grin appears on Frolaytia's face. The kind that heralded mischief to come.

"We've had reports of a Hegemony flagged freighter passing through our space. No doubt smuggling contraband goods. Perhaps you could send a 'message' to the Hegemony for us?"

"I'll see what I can do." You nod.

"Well, good luck out there, Captain." Frolaytia takes a pull from her pipe. "I'll be in touch.

And then the transmission winks out.

"Coming up to the FTL point, Cap." Amy reports.

"All right, going into FTL!" Amy grins as she engages the system.

You all feel a bit of a strange tingling sensation as the Gullinbursti transitions from realspace into that dimension that allowed faster than light travel to be possible. At the Gullinbursti's full speed, it would only take a few hours to reach the Frontier.

"Captain, maybe you should get some rest at your quarters." Bradford suggests as he stands by your side. "It's going to be a long trip to the Frontier.

"No, I'll be fine." You say. "Besides, it gives me time to start going over the mission file in more detail."

As you do review the file, you note that the freighter you were tracking, the Interstellar Conveyor #5410, was indeed a Hegemony flagged freighter. Not necessarily military, but it did swear allegiance to that government. No information on whether the Hegemony was providing any actual military protection to the freighter, or if they were even aware of its constant intrusions into Accord space. However, the report did note that the company that owned the freighter was wealthy enough to be able to afford "private security". Usually just slang for mercenaries and pirates.

"So, what's the play, then, Captain?" Bradford asks. "Do we go in guns blazing in good old fashioned gunboat diplomacy, or do we take the actual diplomatic approach?"

"Bradford, you have the bridge." You say as you stand from your chair. "I'm going to take a little walk."

"Of course, Captain. I'll keep an eye on things here." Bradford acknowledges.

With a nod to the rest of your crew, you head out of the bridge, deciding to go see how things were going back in the engine room, where Scott was set up. You remember that ever since he was shown the Gullinbursti's heart, the flux reactor, he basically just closed the door and never left. As you figured, being a part of the Accord was every engineer's dream.

As you walk the halls, you do note that, while you do pass by a few human crew, the ship feels extremely empty. You remember that most Accord ships were heavily automated to lessen crew requirements, only requiring a third of the manpower compared to equivalent ships. Indeed, you see more than a few drones stalking the halls, both humanoid and not.

You're honestly not sure if you really trust having robots walking freely about the ship, even if it was an everyday occurrence on Accord ships. You obviously don't voice this concern out loud. What if they could hear you? The last thing you needed was a robot mutiny.

However, upon entering the reactor room, you should have figured there would be at least one member of your crew who would absolutely love the idea of a robot crew, and that was Scott, Even now, he was at his workstation, disassembling and reassembling one of the humanoid drones like a cadaver.

"Finally getting a new girlfriend, I see." You grin as you walk up to the worktable.

"Ah! Captain!" Scott nearly stumbles and falls backward in fright as you snap him out of his focus. His tools go clattering to the ground. Immediately, his helpers, all robotic, you note, turn their heads or sensors in your direction to investigate the noise, but upon seeing that nothing was broken, immediately return to their duties. "It's... it's not what it looks like!"

"Mhm." You grin devilishly as you slowly but deliberately slide your hand along the dormant robot's surface, from the collar of its neck all the way down to the navel. Scott visibly gulps as you do so. "I always figured you had a love for robots, but not on this level~."

"I was just inspecting the components, that's all!" Scott says quickly as he stands up straight to attention.

"A likely story." You chuckle before gazing at the flux reactor. "So, how's the machinery working? You couldn't be so irresponsible as not to be monitoring it while you were indulging in your hobby?"

"Well, that's one of the processes that's automated now! I don't have to be constantly look at screens or gauges anymore!" Scott says happily. "Gives me a lot more free time!"

"Well, I suppose." You sigh. "Just make sure it doesn't get in the way of your actual work, all right?"

"Of course, Captain!" Scott nods, and immediately goes back to tinkering with the robot.

Engineers. You shake your head.

"Bridge to Captain, Bridge to Captain. Please report to the Bridge." Bradford's commanding tone echoes throughout the halls of the ship. "We will be dropping out of FTL shortly."

With that announcement, you hurry back to the Bridge, just as the Gullinbursti drops out of FTL, right at one of the major FTL points leading to Accord Frontier space. According to reports, the was the route Conveyor 5410 was most commonly sighted in. It was a good route for a smuggler, actually. Some debris fields and heavy metal clouds to degrade sensors and provide cover. However, it didn't appear as if anything was here.

"We'll wait for them in the debris field. No better way to intimidate then getting the drop on them." You note.

"Got it." Amy nods as she carefully flies the Gullinbursti over to a nearby asteroid cluster, deftly positioning it behind one of the larger rocks, but poking out just enough for your sensors to see around it.

It only takes a few minutes, but finally, Lida pipes up.

"Got a contact. Sensor matches that of a Conveyor model. No transponder." Lida reports. "I'm also... picking four additional contacts. Corvette size, various models."

"Mercenaries, no doubt." Bradford nearly spits the words out in disgust. "It looks like that freighter is under protection. I say we go and take out those escorts, to show them we mean business."

"Aw hell yeah!" Elsa perks up at the thought of shooting things for real. "C'mon, Cap!"

"Well, I suppose we should be professional about this." You say sternly. "But keep shields and weapons powered up and ready. They need to know we mean business."

"Of course, Captain." Bradford nods as he tries to resist the urge to scratch at his sweater. It happened when he got anxious, particularly before a mission, but you can't even begin to imagine HOW that itch was getting through his uniform, made out the space age polymers and synthetic fibers...

ANYWAYS, turning your attention back tot he matter at hand, you watch as Amy powers up the engines, swinging the Gullinbursti around the asteroid, bringing the ship right behind the small ragtag convoy.

"Elsa, are weapons ready?" You ask.

"Cannon's charged, and missile tubes are open." Elsa confirms. "We got all of them locked up!"

And true enough, you see the corvette's immediately spin around to face you.

"Enemy weapons charging, and locking, but not firing." Lida reports.

"All right, put me on an open channel with them." You take a deep breath as Lida activates comms. "Attention, Conveyor 5410 and associated ships, this is the CAN Gullinbursti. You are trespassing into Accord space. Return to Hegemony space immediately or you will be fired upon. Is that clear?"

The standoff continues for a few seconds, up until the corvettes start firing mass driver rounds at you, their shells bouncing and sparking off the forward shield. Meanwhile, the Conveyor 5410's engines flare brightly as her captain dumps additional energy into them as it attempts to boost away to the relative safety of the debris field.

"Tell me what to hit, Cap!" Elsa barks.

"Take out the escorts first!" You bark to Elsa. "We can always chase down the freighter later!"

"Missiles or cannon?" Elsa grins.

Well, the enemy you were facing were four corvettes of various types. It only looked like two were shielded while two were not, and they were armed with an array of weapons, with standard mass drivers being the only one common among them. However, the sensors couldn't really identify what they were carrying. These ramshackle mercenary ships were also a bit tough to classify. Anyways, as corvettes, their biggest strength was their small size and speed, being able to avoid larger and heavier weapons like fighters, but often packing more firepower than their smaller brethren. The missiles would be a good choice here, but you weren't sure of their point defense or evasion capabilities...

"Start of with a limited swarm." You instruct. "2 missiles per ship."

"Awwww, fine." Elsa groans before hitting several keys in rapid succession. On her tactical display, you see a visual count of all of her available missiles, show in blue markers. Eight of those markers go red as they're expended, and your own tactical display tags them as they fly out, being fed targeting data from Gullinbursti's sensors. Almost immediately, the corvettes scatter. The two unshielded corvettes take hard 90 degree turns to try and dodge the missiles while their mass drivers switch from attacking you to interception. One corvette manages to take out both missiles before they can impact. The second corvette manages to hit one missile, but can't take out the second in time. The missiles strikes directly at its midsection, where the sensor returns were the strongest. You can see armor plates on the hull buckle and tear away like dead skin. Fires and venting atmosphere indicates you achieved a hull breach, but the corvette was still active.

As for the two shielded corvettes, they continued to close, opting to tank the missiles with their shields and continuing to pump mass drivers shells into your shields as their own shields flare, warding off the worst of your missiles' damage. However, you knew that they had to have something up their sleeves. That's when you see pieces of the corvettes detach and speed towards Gullinbursti.

and this is why I wanted a full attack. Screw getting intel on their defenses, that never mattered in the first place. The only thing we want is the freighter, which is getting further and further away the longer we stay tangled up with these corvettes!

"Elsa, give them everything you've got!" You order.

"Hahaha, I was waiting for that!" Elsa cackles as she starts hitting dozens of keys on her display to trigger the missiles. And just like that, 24 missiles ripple fire from the main batteries.

The four torpedoes don't even have a chance, as your interceptors slam into them head on, exploding them prematurely, and leaving only some clouds of shrapnel that wasn't even enough of a threat to trigger your shields. The two shielded corvettes, already in the middle of a turn as they break away from their torpedoes, don't even have a chance at this close range.

The first one is hit in succession, the first two missiles knocking down its shield as it forces an emergency flux vent. The last two missiles drill directly into its engine block and midsection before exploding, sending what was left of the craft spinning wildly through space, the G-forces continuing to rip bits and pieces of hits hull off as it goes. The other corvettes meet a similar fate, evaporating under the full might of Gullinbursti's missiles and leaving nothing but scattered debris. You had to admit, you had your doubts about their stopping power due to their size, but they certainly were adept at taking out these smaller corvettes.

"Captain, I'm losing the freighter." Lida warns. "She's gotten into the debris field and it's getting harder to pick her out from the rocks. What do we do?"

"Well, we pursue them, of course." You say. "Amy, if you well."

"All right, hold tight!" Amy grins widely as she throttles up Gullinbursti's engines, boosting the ship directly into the debris field at high speed while at the same time deftly weaving through the rocks. The tactical display shows glimpses and peeks of the freighter. It's not nearly as fast or maneuverable as the Gullinbursti, but it certainly had a big head start on you. At this rate, they had a chance of getting away once their FTL drive recharged.

"Amy, can you go any faster?" You ask anxiously.

"Any faster and we'll be scratching the paint on our new hull." Amy grimaces.

"Well, we can have Tank go out in the assault shuttle." Elsa suggests. "It's smaller and more maneuverable. It'll have a better shot getting through."

"But if that freighter has any kind of hidden defenses, then they'll get torn apart." Bradford warns.

Look, if you're going to spout bullshit, at least try to make it sound convincing. It's pretty obvious that the vast majority of electricity in the Information Age was produced by hydroelectric power. And obviously not fossil fuels. Those were all used up in WW2.

"Full power, Amy. We got shields." You order.

"All right..." Beads of sweat start to form on her brow in anticipation. "Let's do this!"

Gullinbursti surges forward your shield starts flaring brightly as it impacts rocks. Your flux meter starts shrieking and climbing up steadily as more and more of it builds up from the strain.

"Watch out watch out watch out watch out!" Elsa squeals in fright at each and every impact and near miss.

"I'm doing my best here!" Amy grunts, here eyes darting left and right. Even with her tactical overlay marking all possible navigation hazards, it was still quite a feat to keep track of them all.

"Well, guess we're going to die then." Lida sighs.

"YOU'RE NOT HELPING!" Amy barks back before yelling "SHIIIIIIIIIT!"

Amy rounds an asteroid, only to come up to a massive, rock the size of a large space station looming up ahead. At this speed, well, you weren't sure what was going to happen.

"Brace for impact!" Bradford yelps.

You decide to stay quiet for now and trust in Amy's skills, and Gullinbursti's capabilities.

"FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!" Amy roars as she pulls back on the yoke as far as it could go. Gullinbursti noses up, still at full power. However, that can't stop your forward momentum completely and the belly of Gullinbursti's shield slams into the asteroid and starts grinding along the surface, sending dust and rock chips flying past the bridge.

"Cut the engines!" Bradford barks. "You're building up too much flux!"

"If we cut forward momentum now, we'll never catch them"! Amy grunts as she holds the control yoke back, finally lifting Gullinbursti away from the surface of the asteroid. "Holy shiiiiiiit."

"Are... are we alive?" Elsa gasps as he pats herself down to check.

"Yes, we are unfortunately still completely alive." Lida says with dry sarcasm. "Anyways, Conveyor 5410 is right up ahead."

Sure enough, you see the freighter up ahead, still trying to clear the field.

"Weapons?" You ask Elsa.

"Too much flux buildup for the cannon." Elsa shakes her head. "Our missiles will pretty much be bug bites to a ship that size, and that's not even considering what it might be carrying..."

"Well, keep them locked. They probably don't realize it anyways." You sigh as you open your open comm channel again.

"Conveyor 5410, not only have you trespassed into Accord space, but you have fired upon an Accord Navy ship. You and your ship will be detained and impounded. Resistance will be met with force. Is that clear?"

"Crystal." You hear a grizzled, but defeated voice.

"So uh, what do we do with these guys?" Amy asks.

"Keep them in your sights, Elsa. They do anything funny, don't be afraid to shoot a missile across their bow."

"Got it, Cap." Elsa nods.

"And Tank?" You query.

There's a click on your comms signifying he's listening.

"Gear up, because it's time for a boarding action."

You smile at the rapid number of clicks over the comms. That meant he was eager and waiting.

You wonder what you were going find on that freighter? It's been hell of a first assignment so far. How many more complications could possibly be thrown at you...?
