"Welcome, everybody, to the RMS Queen Mary!!" The hotel greeter smiles brightly. "My name is Mary, and I'll be your concierge for tonight! Please don't mind the coincidence!"

You hesitate for a second before it clicks with you. Her name matched that of the ship. Must be pretty awkward, actually.

"Anyways, it's so wonderful to have guests, especially due to the... recent events!" Mary tries to keep up her cheerful image, trying not to reference the persistent Abyssal threat. "Please please, come in! You may leave your bags there, the staff will take them straight to your rooms!"

Mary then deftly spins on her heel and marches up the gangplank to the Queen Mary's top deck. You all follow her up and into the ship itself, where you get your first look at the interior.

You have to admit, the interior of the Queen Mary was nothing like you've ever seen before. The gleaming wood paneling, the soft patterned carpets, the bright yet soft lighting, it was all a world away compared to the dull, grey steel corridors that you've seen in the Tarawa and had yourself in your old hull. It felt very... welcoming. A place you'd WANT to stay in for the rest of your life...

"Is... is this REAL wood?" Julie gasps as she runs her fingers along the polished surface of one of the wood countertops. "How can you AFFORD this?!"

"Well, she was a cruise liner, after all! Her guests expected the best!" Mary cheerfully replies. "Now, I know all of you must be absolutely tired, and you all have a big day tomorrow, but perhaps you'd like to stay up just a little longer for a little tour? Like Iowa across the bay, the Queen Mary is ship FULL of history? And... maybe a few ghosts! Are you interested?"

"A tour doesn't sound so bad." You shrug as you turn to the others. "How about you?"

"I kinda want to see this ghost... and punch it!" Johnston grins as she cracks her knuckles.

"I don't think that's how it works." Heerman rolls her eyes.

"I'll find a way to MAKE it work!" Johnston responds confidently.

"More history is always nice. I've always had an interest in other ships." White Plains smiles.

"Well, no matter what, I gotta tag along to keep an eye on your girls." Red shrugs. "So my opinion doesn't really matter all that much."

"Heh, digging through the insides of TWO ships in one night? You'll pretty naughty girls." Sam chortles.

"All right, then it's settled!" Mary smiles. "Where would you like to go first? The standard tour or... the 'special' one? This is a HAUNTED ship after all!"

"I kinda want to see these ghosts myself." You grin. "Let us at 'em!"

"Oh my, such confidence!" Mary puts a hand up to her mouth as she giggles a bit. "All right. However, for the best viewing, we'll have to make a few changes!"

And with a snap of her fingers, the bright lighting throughout the interior of the hotel ship immediately dims, like going from a sun to a dying ember. You can barely seven see a few feet in front of you, your sister ships and other companions melding into the darkness as indistinct silhouettes.

"Now, please watch your step, and under no circumstances should you let yourselves get separated!" Mary continues on in her cheerful tone as if this was all normal. She flips on a small flashlight to light the way. "After all, the spirits on this ship love to target those who wander the halls alone!"

You almost jump in fright when you feel something sidle up to your side, until you realize that it's just White Plains.

"Scared?" You say in a whispered chuckle.

"N-no! I just don't like the dark..." White Plains says unconvincingly.

"Now, there are many haunted areas of this ship where the spirits like to gather"! Mary's tone remains cheerful, but starts taking a more sinister vibe as she goes on. "There's the swimming pool, where one can see phantom swimmers, many of whom are said to be victims of past drownings. A damaged section of hull where the Queen Mary cleaved a ship in two, dooming many of her crew to a freezing death in the Atlantic, the boiler room where the spirit of a long dead engineer roams, and finally, the "Lady in White", who roams the halls of the ship for reasons unknown..."

"Let's see that damaged section of hull." You suggest.

"Ah, then follow me to the bow!" Mary says cheerfully as she prances off down the hall, the glow from her tiny handheld flashlight growing smaller and smaller. You all quickly hustle to keep pace with her as she goes.

And she goes farther and deeper down into the bowels of the ship. You note how she's leading you past doors labeled quite clearly "NO ACCESS" or "EMPLOYEES ONLY" or simply just "DANGER". The walls and floor become less opulent and more utilitarian. The glossy wooden and panels and carpeted floor give way to bare steel, long rusted from age. You also notice that you were all pressing together closer and closer. Whether it was because the space was getting more cramped, or you were all unconsciously banding together out of a deeply suppressed group unease, you weren't sure.

"So, what exactly did the Queen Mary hit, and why?" Heerman finally speaks up, most likely just to break the silence, and maybe just make sure Mary was still there.

"Ah yes, the ship in question was the HMS Curacoa." Mary says a bit mournfully. "It was quite tragic really, as she was the Queen Mary's escort, and was accidentally sunk by her own charge."

"How the hell did that happen?" You wonder loudly. "I mean, how does a cruise ship take down a warship?"

"Well, You can't underestimate Queen Mary's size." Mary points out, her flashlight still waving around. "During the war, she could carry up to 15,000 troops at time, and she was FAST, being able to go up to 28 knots. She sliced poor Curacoa in two like a stick..."

"Well, what happened the crew?" You ask, though you were pretty sure you already knew the answer.

"Many of them went down with the ship, of course." Mary says, her cheer now completely gone. "Almost 200-300 men. Barely a hundred rescued."

"They didn't stop to pick up the survivors?" White Plains blinks.

"Well, shipgirls such as you all know that during the War, U-boats were always a constant concern." Mary shakes her head. "Being a valuable troop transport, Queen Mary just couldn't afford to stop. Her Captain gave the order to keep going.

"That's cold..." Johnston mumbles.

"Well, that's what any other ship would've done." Sam shrugs. "In the end, the escort is more expendable. Simple as that."

Well, Sam did have a point, especially considering she was purely built for escort exclusively.

"And they say that on some particularly cold or stormy nights, the vengeful spirits of the Curacoa's crew try to exact their revenge." Mary then pauses and point to a section of the hull, where you see its obviously been dented in, and then hastily repaired. "This is one of the last reminders of that collision. They say that if you press your ear against this section of hull, you can hear the Curacoa's sailors clawing at it from the other side, trying to get in..."

"Pffft, yeah right." You roll your eyes.

"How about you give it a try?" Mary turns, the illumination from her flashlight warping her cheerful expression into a more unsettling one half shrouded in shadow.

You decide to go through with it. You stumble backwards, groaning as you clutch your head before falling to the deck, making sure not to accidentally hurt yourself as you do so. You drop down and feel the cold steel on your cheek and your ears rumble with the sound of stomping feet.

"Hoel!" You hear your sisters cry as they rush over to your aid. You crack an eye open and see Red, Sam, and Mary standing back, obviously not falling for it but not saying anything about it.

Both Johnston and Heerman try to shake you awake, while White Plains frantically mumbles the steps needed for CPR, as if such a thing were needed. You can't hold in your laughter anymore as you burst out rolling along the dirty steel deck.

"Ahahaha, I totally got you all!" You chortle.

"Hoel, you bitch!" Johnston groans.

"Of course, I should have expected this." Heerman shakes her head.

"That wasn't funny..." White Plains sighs.

"All right, I think that's enough excitement for one night." Red shakes her head as she checks her watch. "We're going to be flying down to San Diego tomorrow, so we all need to get some damn rest. Mary, can you lead us back to our rooms?"

"Certainly! Let me just get the lights!" Mary snaps her fingers again ,and just like that, all of the lights on the deck flare up, temporarily blinding you all. "Let's go, then! I'm sorry I couldn't show you more. Maybe next time!"

Mary leads you all back to your staterooms. Considering your status, you all got the best, of course. Multiroom suites, with each of you getting your own bed. After that little prank, your sisters naturally aren't in too much of a mood to get into late shenanigans with you, and head straight to bed. Sam and Red also fall asleep rather quickly, no doubt completely pooped having to follow you around all day.

What should you do...

You decide to go check out the pool that Mary had been talking about. The one where supposedly drowned spirits congregated. It was easy enough to find, following the signs, and you hardly say anybody on the way that could potentially stop you. No other guests, and no apparent staff, either. Maybe it was pretty late.

Nevertheless, you continue on through the brightly lit halls, heading for the famous pool. However, when you finally reach it, you felt... a bit disappointed? Rather than one of those really nice swimming pools with sapphire blue water, and happy people lounging about in them, instead all you saw was a dimly lit, tiled room and an empty pool. From the looks of it, it had been drained long ago, leaving nothing but empty stained tile...

"Hm, odd to see you about at this hour!" Mary's cheerful voice chimes.

"Jesus!" You spin around to see that it was indeed Mary, that regular smile every servant gave to their master. "What are you doing here?!"

"I should be asking you that!" Mary retorts playfully. "Like I said, wandering these halls alone can be rather dangerous! You'll never know when something will come along and snatch you up!"

Honestly, I'd be down for helping Wo get her revenge on Vahlen. Maybe not kill Vahlen, but at least get some justice out of it. Take pictures of her lab and "experiments." Send them to a journalist. That sort of thing.

A ghost Wo who is still evil would yell at us a bunch, but we should just be constructive and realistic about her little schemes. Killing Vahlen solves nothing, but informing the public about the truth of what she's done is the right thing to do.

"Oh dear, it looks like you've finally caught on." Mary smiles as she snaps her fingers again.

That's when you hear the pitter patter of hundreds of pairs of tiny little feet, and you look down to see fairies all gathering around Mary!

"You're a shipgirl too?" You blink.

"Is that so surprising?" Mary chuckles as her fairies squeak at her. Maybe those were the source of all of those hauntings?"

"Just how long have you been around?" You narrow your eyes. "It couldn't have been in the past two years like the rest of us?"

"Ah, well, you're right about that. I've been here, tied to this ship for a long, LONG time." Mary smiles wistfully. "I've heard from others shipgirls how they don't like being around their old hulls, if they're still existing, but me, I just can't fathom ever leaving!"

"Ah, so you're basically a con-ship, then. Trying to make yourself haunted in order to attract visitors?"

"Well, you have to understand, it's all so dreadfully LONELY, sitting here in this bay all by myself!" Mary shakes herself. "I'm not sure about you warships, but a cruise ship NEEDS people to cater to and serve! Otherwise, what reason would we be around for?"

"Hmmmm, you do have a point." You nod, then pause. "Wait, why are you telling me all this, then?"

"Because, I can feel IT from you. That cold aura that surrounds you. That you try to pretend isn't there." Mary leans in closer, her smile completely gone now. "You've seen the Frozen Sea, haven't you?"

"What do you know about it?" You ask, unconsciously grabbing Mary by the shoulders. "Tell me, I need to know!"

"So you did see it..." Mary sighs, completely ignoring how you're kind of manhandling her right now. "That place... I guess you can say that's where the Abyssals come from. Nothing but an endless expanse of ice. I've seen it too,"

"Really? When?" You ask hastily.

"It was about two years back, before the US Navy could fully secure the coasts." Mary looks away sadly. "Abyssal attacks on this harbor were fairly common, people were scared, and left in droves. I was practically abandoned, because who would want to stay on a hotel ship when the threat was from the ocean?"

"So they tried to get you?" You blink.

"In a way." Mary shivers. "One of them approached, me, tempted me. Told me that I could be 'beautiful' again. She showed me just a glimpse of what I could become and... and I grew scared."

"What did you see?" You feel the atmosphere starting to feel heavy and chilled as Mary described this otherworldly place.

"Things that have no right to exist on this vast blue sea." Mary chokes. "Soulless amalgamations of machine and flesh. Bodies and hulls being fed into a great maw to feed their never-ending hunger... These Abyssals aren't human, Hoel. Whatever those pundits on the news or those scientist say, those monsters don't love humans or hate them. In fact, they don't care about them at all."

That's when you see Mary starting to sweat as she back away and clutches herself.

"We're not their targets of vengeance, and they're not our sins come back to haunt us. We were foolish and arrogant to believe they cared that much for us. To them, we're nothing but resources. Food to be eaten and wood to be chopped. They'll eat and eat and eat until there's nothing left but a frozen sea..."

Finally, Mary stops and takes a deep breath before dropping down on her knees, suddenly looking very tired. Her swam of fairies rush to her aid, carrying ice packs and bottles of water, though she shoos them away.

"I have to thank you, Hoel." Mary smiles rather weakly. "I haven't been able to talk about this. Not to anyone Who would believe me? I haven't even told them that I'm a shipgirl!"

"Well, maybe you should change that." You say as you help Mary back up to her feet. "I mean, when you think about it, wouldn't Queen Mary the ship girl be a much MUCH larger draw than just some spooky ghosts people may or may not have seen?"

"Hmmmm, I suppose in the current circumstances... that's not a bad idea." Mary smiles, this time warmly. "The publicity would be through the roof! Maybe... maybe they'd make me seaworthy again!"

"Whoa, now, let's not get too far ahead of ourselves here." You chuckle, and then frown again. "So those Abyssals didn't come back for you?"

"Oh, they certainly tried, but thankfully at that point the Navy had managed to close off the harbor." Mary sighs. "I don't know what lies in wait for you on those distant battlefields, but I suggest you be careful."

"Yeah, I get that a lot." You shake your head, San Fran's similar warning ringing echoes now. "And uh, one more thing... why did you come back so early? Or how?"

"I don't really remember..." Mary frowns. "I vaguely remember a black beach... and a voice. He said I'd be the first of many... I think..."

"Wait, are you implying..." You lean in closer. "Something created us?"

"It makes sense, doesn't it?" Mary nods. "Humans created our hulls and... something else created us. At least that's how I see things."

You feel another shiver down your spine.

"Hey, thanks for talking to me." You say to Mary. "Good luck on the reveal.

"No, thank YOU, Hoel." Mary hugs you. "I thought... I thought I'd be the only crazy one to have Abyssals talk to me like that... It makes me glad I'm not alone."

"Misery loves company, huh?" You sigh.

---

Thankfully, that night, you dream of neither a dimly lit beach with black sand and dark water. Nor do you see endless fields of ice, with a crawling menace lurking just beneath the surface. You actually don't remember what you had dreamed about, but you assume that's kind of a good thing, all things considered.

However, that didnt change the fact that little late night romp meant your sleep schedule was kinda shot. You only had a few handful of hours of sleep before you were roughly woken up by Red and Sam, chastising for oversleeping. You had to pack up your luggage and all the souvenirs you bought in the space of minutes, since Navy helicopters were always busy and they couldn't afford to have one idling on the pad just for your oversleeping as. At least according to them. You and your group quickly board the Seahawk, and as it takes off, you catch a glimpse of Mary giving you all a wave as you head off.

You wonder if she'll be okay.

"Hey, Hoel, did something happen?" Heerman asks as she catches you waving back to Mary.

"What can you possibly mean?" You blink.

"Don't lie. We saw you trying to sneak back into your bed last night." Johnston grins. "A midnight walk? Trying to find more ghosts? Or maybe a dashing late night rendezvous with an admirer~?"

"Oh yes, I was totally having crazy wild sex with my secret boyfriend." You say somewhat jokingly.

"SUUUUUURE." Johnston and Heerman chime together.

"As if you'd actually have sex with a guy!" Johnston chortles.

"Our money is on either Anna or Portland." Heerman snickers.

"Well, fuck you two, too." You pout. "At least you're not in on this-"

"I'm actually running a betting pool on which one you fuck first." Sam nods. "We're already making bank on the comics."

"SO IT WAS YOOOOOUUUU!" You point an accusing finger at the destroyer escort.

"Hey, don't blame the player, blame the game!" Sam laughs. "I don't draw that stuff, I just help distribute it!"

"AND THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE... HOW!?" You growl.

"U-um, you should all calm down!" White Plains stammers. "You're starting to get rather loud..."

"Yeah, you're making the pilot piss his pants!" Red roars with laughter

With that, the commotion dies down briefly as you all catch your breath. You decide to take the chance to glance out the window. Down below, you could see the white beaches of the California coastline, winding down south the a city in the distance you assume is San Diego. You also see a large, winding road running parallel to the coast. It must be the Pacific Coast Highway you've heard so much about. However, instead of vacationers an tourists that it usually handles, it looked as if the PCH had been converted to military use only, as you see quite a number of military vehicles patrolling along it, as well as temporary observation posts set down at regular intervals along the coast. No doubt to keep a eye for potential Abyssal incursion. You then switch your gaze to the horizon, when you see something unusual.

"Hey, Red." You tap her on the shoulder. "What's going on over there?"

In the distance, you could see what looked to be one of those modern supertanker ships, the real massive ones that made even battleships look like toys. It seemed to be steaming towards the coast at full speed, while helicopters swarmed above it and a Coast Guard Cutter and Navy destroyer were trailing it.

"...huh, that kinda odd." Red agrees. "But it looks like the Navy's got it handled."

Oh Hoel, I hope you don't think you're going to get away from the Abyssals so easily with something like just saying "No."
>>

"I've got a real bad feeling about this." You grumble.

"Yeah... I kinda do, too." Red nods with clear unease. "I'll call it in, see what's up."

As Red patches into the tactical net, you turn back to your sisters, their eyes also drawn to the little spectacle. They seemed to be aware that something wasn't quite right, either.

"Look at the road...." White Plains mumbles.

Sure enough, you look down again, and now see that you're beginning to fly over San Diego proper. Or at least the outlying areas. You can already see police and soldiers clearing the beaches, as tanks and artillery guns are quickly mobilized in their place. However, nobody seemed to be in any particular hurry. Maybe so as not to cause any sort of panic. But it definitely didn't look good.

"Okay, I got he sitrep." Red speaks up again as she switches her frequency back to yours. "Look like it was a tanker that went MIA during a convoy run down to Panama. Just showed up again and they're trying to guide it back to port, but they're not getting any response from the crew."

"Wait a minute... doesn't this sound familiar?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Yep. Abyssal bastards tried the same thing in Alaska." Red nods grimly. "The Navy suspects something is up, too, which is why they're mobilizing. Current orders for us are the divert to Naval Base San Diego and wait for further orders."

>Soulless amalgamations of machine and flesh. Bodies and hulls being fed into a great maw to feed their never-ending hunger...
>To them, we're nothing but resources. Food to be eaten and wood to be chopped. They'll eat and eat and eat until there's nothing left but a frozen sea..

Well, I dunno whether to believe this or not. I don't doubt what she saw, but her interpretation might not be the whole story. Sure, they're evil, but she makes it sound like the aliens from Independence Day. Pretty cliche and simplistic, although I applaud Merc for trying a different path and hope there's another revelation to it.

However, it does sound like we have a very large mouth that needs killing and that might free all the abyssals in its thrall. Including us, if there's still a bit of Wo's hat left in our brain. Which judging by the dream of Wo's death, I think is very much the case. Although our recent dream is a good sign but it's also a little unusual in its lack of description. Maybe we did dream something, but forgot?

"Sounds like the wise choice." You sigh as the Seahawk turns away from the ocean and heads further down the coast. It's easy to spot the naval base, as it doesn't look all that much different from Pearl Harbor, with the large docks and the numerous warships of all types moored there. From your research, you recognized most of them were Arleigh Burke destroyers, a few logistics ships, a carrier, and even a few of those hastily recommissioned Oliver Hazard Perries. God it must kinda such being forced to crew one of those relics...

Once the Seahawk lands, you can tell the base was in a flurry of activity. After all, Abyssals were possibly knocking on their very doorstep. Soldiers and personnel sprinted to and fro, while vehicles of all types rolled around trying to get their precious cargo where it was needed. Waiting for you at the helipad was a Navy lieutenant, who salutes all of you.

"It's good to know DoD finally sent us those extra shipgirls we were asking for." The lieutenant grins. "With almost all of ours getting shipped off to Pearl for that offensive, well, we were getting mighty worried."

"I wouldn't get your hopes up." Red shakes her head. "These girls here were on leave when this whole shitstorm started. If we could, I'd prefer we not have to mobilize them."

"See, that might be a problem." The lieutenant frowns. "We only have three Fletcher-class shipgirls for anti-Abyssal defense here. Our shipgirls are spread so thin the rest won't be able to be recalled here before that damn tanker plows into the harbor."

"Only three Fletchers?!" Red gapes. "Goddamn..."

"Anyways, we need to act quickly." The lieutenant continues. "Most of the ships docked here are in for refit and out action. We've scrambled a squadron of Hornets from Miramar to take out that tanker, but I suspect the moment those Harpoons land, all hell is going to break loose."

"What do you need us to do?" Sam asks, a grim look on her face.

"I hate you ask you this on your leave, but I need you go gear up and get out there." The lieutenant sighs. "At this point, we can't take any chances."

"You can count on us." You nod. "What do you need us to do?"

"Well, officially, our priority is the protection of civilians. We've got a big coast that's going to need defending." The Lieutenant explains. "But we also need to protect this harbor here. We've got a lot of ships in for refit and if the Abyssals manage to him them while they're down, well, we're ALL going to be in for a bad time..."

I thought the "drop off" choice won? Anyway, the base should have some defenses while the civies have none. Are some of the guns on the docked ships usable, or did they unload the magazines?

Seriously, what is your problem?

If you insist that we have to kill them all, then think of it this way--cut off the head, and the body dies. The fastest way to end the war would be to kill that maw that creates them--even if the others don't all drop/get freed as a result, it means *they don't get any more reinforcements* and it turns into a simple war of attrition that we can actually *win*.
>>
>>45251188
>Are some of the guns on the docked ships usable, or did they unload the magazines?
Standard Navy procedure is to unload all ordnance at the base's Ordnance Pier *before* docking, and to then load up again before leaving.

The reason? Look up the Arizona, the Texas City Disaster, and the Halifax Explosion, then get back to me.

>>45251238
