Vys floods into you from the thin band of spirit-born ivory you requested of Mahana, color returning to the world as your reserves are replenished. The ache which had been plaguing your shoulders for the last several hours abated, and no longer does it feel as though maggots crawl underneath the newly regrown skin of your forearms. Sometimes you forget just how unpleasant being low on vys can be.
>Vys Pool: (28/66)

No longer on the brink of unconsciousness, you turn your attention to Profectus. Even now he struggles against his confinement, the beam of glowing red that his arm has become flaring outwards whenever someone draws too close. Fortunately he can't aim the enormous pillar of fire paralyzed as he is. Come to think of it, his arm looks rather lopsided. It extends three or four feet further than his other arm, giving your companion a strange, lumbering appearance.

You set about your work immediately, lest the paralysis begin to wear off. A tendril of vys extends from your abdomen, linking Prof's reserves with your own. The sheer amount of power Profectus has exhausted has carved channels through his body, avenues for the excess to escape through. This makes draining him of vys an exceptionally simple task, it only takes perhaps a minute, maybe even less, to reduce him to a state of unconsciousness.
>Vys Pool: (53/66)

The light of his arm dies away, a lump of black stone falling to the floor as the last of his reserves flee him. The black shell cracks as it strikes the marble floors, revealing the blade of the enchanted shortsword you'd given him earlier. More immediately concerning, his actual arm is gone. The usual stone casing was shorn away earlier, and in the absence of his vys pool there seems to be nothing to maintain its molten core.

(1/3)
>>
You take this opportunity to inspect the shoulder to which his stone arm is usually attached. At the center, roughly where you believe the bones would have met to form the joint, sits a softly glowing ruby carved with a rather elaborate runic array. Its base seems to be the rune for soul acted on by a reinforced containment rune, but the array sprawls out from that point in increasingly smaller script, until around the edges it appears to simply be a groove carved into the surface of the gemstone.

Drawing closer, you try to read the smaller script around the edges. Many of the runes are housed within triangles, squares, or pentagons rather than circles, which you believe indicates the order in which those runes are meant to be affected by the others around it. You can pick out the rune for stone repeated in several places, as well as the rune for fire and vys. Unfortunately, you don't have sufficient knowledge as to guess at the enchantment's true purpose or its mechanism of action.

The flesh around the gem is gone, it's been stripped away completely and replaced by a metal depression which recedes into his torso an inch or so, the gemstone elevated above. Then, around this metal 'socket', is a layer of stone carved to resemble flesh. The stone itself seems to almost fused with his skin, as though rather than the stone being an addition, the simple transmuted his flesh into stone.

You certainly hope the arm grows back, the gem is still glowing softly but it seems greatly reduced. He likely used much of its power in the fight. Before you turn your attention to other things, you quickly heal his broken jaw. It's a simple task, one which you perform almost as an afterthought.

Now to the matter of your party. Reaching out through the brooches, you allow your thoughts to seek out Mortia and Fulvia. The former is only barely conscious, but the latter appears to you with all of her usual vast inscrutability. {How are you two doing on the balcony? I saw one of Profectus' blast nearly take your head off.}

Your artificial companion responds in an emotionless drone. {I sustained light damage but have restored myself to perfect operational conditions. Mortia sustained severe injuries to her right side, including the destruction of her arm and a significant portion of her right lung, kidney, and liver. I have taken steps to alleviate the damage caused but I lack the expertise to regrow her limb fully. She will survive, but is currently incapacitated.}

So that leaves only yourself, Darzi, and Fulvia in a functional state. You suppose you could send Fulvia onward with Profectus and Mortia to reach the surface, while you and Darzi continue on, but at this point you're seriously considering the possibility of complete withdrawal.

>There's no way you're going to be able to proceed with such a severely reduced party. Sound the retreat.
>Send Fulvia on with your incapacitated party members, there's bound to be some good shit in here somewhere.
>Write-in

Quick note: I've finally filled out your Runic Library with a few missing runes and updated the entry in the inventory pastebin for your Warlock Armor.

Group therapy as in we need to talk to our group and fix the issues they're having.

Mortia went into shock, she's not gonna be doing great. Darzi has been acting off for a while and almost killed Prof. And Prof has to deal with him going on a drug-fueled rampage and nearly killing everyone. Soma posted about their insanity rising in a past thread too, so we might want to pass the ring around.

Casting a glance about the room you find it in ruins. It's almost hard to believe that before you arrived this place had been preserved almost pristine for more than a thousand years, yet here in the space of thirty minutes you've wrought immense damage. The roof seems on the cusp of buckling, and the balcony above is all but untraversable so much of it has collapsed onto the floor below.

You should probably endeavor to get out of here, and quickly. Before the entire complex comes crashing down on top of you. {Fulvia, grab Mortia and Profectus and take them back to the hall just outside the double doors we entered through. Darzi, help me look around this place for anything of value. Maybe this won't turn out to entirely have been a waste of time.}

You don't get any response, but you spy Fulvia picking up Mortia on the balcony above and carefully proceeding towards the stairs. Darzi joins you a moment later, having stalked off after clocking Profectus in the jaw. You can't tell much about her in her armor, but you get the impression she's still angry. Probably not at you, or at least you certainly hope not.

You split up, she goes up the stairs on the right, towards the collapsed portions of the balcony, while you go left towards the side of the balcony you've yet to explore. It proves to be much the same as the side opposite, a few scattered chairs and couches, many of very fine make, and a handful of scattered tables. You do note something interesting though. Discarded on one of the tables is a pipe carved from dark wood and banded with silver, and next to it is a curious looking device on a chain.

(1/3)
>>
>thread started two hours ago and still no second update
>>
Once you get closer you realize that the device is some sort of silver pendant, though the chain doesn't seem designed to fit around one's neck. You're not really sure what it would be used for, in fact. Picking it up, you find that the front of the watch is carved with an elaborate collection of what at first glance appeared to be runic arrays, but are in fact merely descriptions of the constellations typically visible in the night sky.

There's a button at the top, in the loop to which the chain is bound. You try pressing it, perhaps unwisely. The front of the watch pops open, much to your surprise, and reveals a face carved with a number of Rhynian numerals, twelve of them in fact, and a number of moving 'arms'. The intervals all seem fairly regular, every sixty movements of longest arm results in one movement of the middle arm. Presumably the same would hold true for the shortest arm.

At a glance you'd say it's probably intended to tell time, since the longest arm seems to move with the passing of every second, and the middle arm thus determining minutes. Still, you're not sure what significance the twelve numbers have, or what the three smaller, golden inset faces mean. Perhaps the Rhynians reckoned time differently than you're familiar? Regardless, why would a device clearly of Rhynian make be sitting in a Hiacian ruin? A trophy taken off the corpse of an enemy, perhaps?

You toss it into your cloak, figuring at the very least it's valuable for the silver it's made of. You take the pipe as well, after emptying it and washing it out with steam. You're really starting to get the hang of this whole 'combining elements' nonsense.
(2/3)
>>
Returning to the level below you find Darzi already waiting for you, empty handed. Not surprising really, if there was anything worth taking you would've grabbed it when you were first exploring the balcony. For some reason she refuses to meet your eyes, always looking up and away from you. Have you perhaps offended her in some way? “Is everything alright? You've been acting odd lately.”

She turns, peering at you through the three strangely arrayed diagonal eye holes in her helm. “Of course everything isn't alright, Mikhael. Profectus, our friend, nearly killed us. I understand that creature was powerful, I two fell under its sway, but I did not attack you or the others. I recklessly sought the creature's demise. I question how loyal he can truly be if the first thing he tries to do upon losing full control of his faculties is kill us all.”

She cuts you off with a gesture as you begin to speak. “But if you're asking why I'm acting weird right now, it's because Profectus burned off your robes.”

You spare a moment to examine yourself, and sure enough. Your present state of dress does little to preserve your decency. “You know I have been feeling a bit of a draft, but I simply attributed it to the destruction of my armor.” You turn your thoughts to more important topics, dismissing your present nudity.

Setting off towards the vast double doors you entered this facility through, you endeavor to explain Prof's behavior “You must understand, the cause of Profectus' sudden assault upon the party can be traced to the substance that creature exuded upon its death. The Spice is an exceptionally powerful drug with rather unfortunate effects upon the mind of the user. When I first used it, I thought myself equal to the Gods themselves. I find it hard to hold a grudge against Prof having experienced the same sense of all-consuming power.”

The two of you exit the chamber, and immediately Fulvia starts channeling vys into the two enormous statues flanking the doors on either side. They begin to slowly shut the doors, the ground shaking under the weight of the immense stone slabs grinding closed. Mortia seems like she's starting to wake up, she's seated with her back against a pillar muttering under her breath. Profectus stands like a statue a short distance away, his face frozen in an expression of wrath even though you're certain he's unconscious.

Two reasons:
Your ring is on your left hand, your shield arm. Your shield survived, and thus the left half of your armor is in better shape compared to the right.
The ring is made from ivory you got from the tusk of a spirit. Not some piddly little spirit larva either, but a pretty powerful spirit for its age. Thus, the vys ring is really sturdy.

The armor is able to repair itself. That's the reason objects crafted from the carapace of palaka worms is so valuable, the techniques used to maintain and shape the carapace meant it stayed alive even after the worm died. The methods involved in preserving and shaping the carapace died with the Hiacian Empire, but many of their artifacts remain. The armor was pretty much mass produced at one point.

You reach out to Fulvia via the brooches while approaching Mortia to get an idea of the extent to which she was wounded. {Start carving the tunnel off of this chamber, wherever is most convenient. I'm sure we'll want to return at some point to investigate this ruin in more detail, perhaps with better equipment or simply more caution. I'd say proceed straight for a hundred feet or so before beginning upwards again.}

She sets about fulfilling your orders with vigor, Darzi joining her and bringing Profectus with her, slung over one of her shoulders. They pick a spot in the center of the left wall, thus hopefully avoiding the rest of the facility. While they get to work you crouch down next to Mortia, inspecting the rend in her glass armor along the right side of her body. It looks like she lost her arm up to the shoulder, and a significant chunk of her right side.

To call the wound 'healed' wouldn't really be accurate. It's a patch job at best. Channeling vys you find little in the way of internal damage, but the majority of her right side is scar tissue, from shoulder to hip and covering a significant portion of her abdomen. You're going to need to rot away the scar tissue, and for that you're going to want Mortia unconscious. Thus, assuming a meditative pose, you focus your will on slowing her heartbeat.

You lower her pulse until her breathing is long and slow, and once you're confident she's asleep you set about your work. The outer layer of skin melts away rapidly under your attentions, and reveals below that her muscle tissue is all wrong. It really was a hack job, with some of her abdominal muscle not properly attached to her skeletal structure and some of it missing entirely. There's no way this would have held her together for more than a few hours at best. You'll need to have a talk with Fulvia regarding how people work.

Stripping away the layer of muscle you start over from scratch, and in short order you've set about regrowing her upper arm where it was previously shorn off. Bone always takes the longest to regrow, but after that muscle, fat, and skin sheathes the newly grown skeletal arm in short order. By the time you've finished, it's as though she was never injured to begin with.
>Vys Pool: (49/66)

Unfortunately her armor is ruined. The mixture of leather, glass, and metal has been shorn nearly in half, and her cuirass is barely staying on. It's a shame too, because that armor wasn't cheap. You spent quite a bit of gold on that. You'll need to either get it repaired or buy her a new set of armor. You can't claim any familiarity with the origin or design of glass armor, so in all likelihood it will end up being the latter.

Releasing your hold on Mortia's pulse, you stand and turn your attention to your own present state of undress. She remains asleep for now, but you'll probably wish to change if you want to avoid startling her. However, as you begin to remove your armor you notice something odd. The scorched portions have already flaked off, and in their place new armor is growing to replace it.

You seem to recall reading once that artifacts crafted from the carapace of the palaka worms was alive, and tended to have a mind of its own. You had previously taken this as metaphor, or perhaps somehow related to the powerful enchantments typically placed on Hiacian artifacts somehow giving rise to strange, unnamed phenomena. Now you're wondering if it wasn't meant literally.

We should enchant some armor for Mortia. We've got a lot of practice in theorizing hypothetical WMDs. Let's see how we'll do with armor and protective enchantment.

Nah that was never a confirmed number we actually started wearing it around like 44 consistently. And the only problem with the armors was Vys overflow so The Ring could just completely solve it and not only allow us to wear it but speed up the Rings charge rate.
>>
It'll probably just kick our but when we take it off, like before with the light warlock armor. But this time we'll know it's coming.

>>
>>45204289
>>45204303

While he is right, that we should wait until we are out of the dungeon to try it on. We are still in a dungeon, and we need fully functional armor in case more baddies show up, so trying it now, is a smarter decision at this point.
>>
>>45204289
Yeah wait till we get back.

>>45203890
Maybe have mik remember about it while experimenting withe the regular warlock armor and make a note to check out the heavy warlock armor later?
>>
>>45204279
>>45204325

That's why I suggested waiting until getting to 75. And while we have the ring we shouldn't discount the possibility of the armor outpacing the ring or other complications.
>>
>>45204325
Couldn't we also just use more magic? Would that not work? Can't overfill if we're constantly draining
>>
While you're curious to understand more about your armor, you'd rather not risk it potentially fusing with your flesh or growing into your spinal column. That just doesn't sound at all pleasant. Thus you go about carefully removing the shattered remnants of your armor. All that remains of the helmet is the spike and some of the back plate, while the right pauldron, rerebrace, vambrace, and gauntlet have been almost completely destroyed. The gauntlet in particular is in bad shape, little more than a few of the fingers remain.

The left side of your body seems to have fared better than the right, likely because it was more directly covered by your shield. Much of your cuirass survives, and though the pauldron is heavily damaged most of the rest of the armor remains in good working order. Your legs are in a similar state, damaged but not nearly as bad as your right arm and head were. You lay out each individual piece roughly where it would belong if worn and, naked as the day you were born, take on a meditative pose near the remnants of your helmet.

Channeling Water magic first into your helmet yields almost immediate results. The stony carapace begins to heal at a much accelerated rate, and in a matter of a few minutes you've turned what had once been little more than a plate of ancient worm hide into a full helmet, complete with the enraged face of Surya carved into the front. You do the same with each piece of armor in turn, moving down to your cuirass and then the various pieces of armor which protect your arms.

It takes perhaps a half hour all told to finish your task. You'd slipped into a meditative trance without quite realizing it. When you open your eyes, you find yourself alone save for Mortia, the sounds of voices echoing dimly from the tunnel behind you.

(1/2)
>>
We should equip now, deal with the overflow (if any) later when we take it off. We were fine after sleeping when we first equipped "Warlock Light *TM"
>>
Even if we do get a bad vys buildup from the heavy armor it should be trivial to fix it. Plus it might be cool to meditate on the nature of such a clog if we get one again.
>>
As for Mortia, it seems she's only just beginning to wake up. You suppose she needed the rest, after what she experienced. She sits up and stretches just as you're fastening your belt, a pair of cotton pants preventing what would have been a rather awkward encounter on her end. Next you throw on a white shirt and set about pulling your armor back on, a lengthy process considering you have to put on each piece individually.

By the time you're finally down to only your helmet, Mortia is well and truly awake. She's been polite enough to wait for you to finish changing, but now you suppose her curiosity gets the better of her. “What happened to me? Last I recall, I was trying to get a closer look at that poor mutilated soul we found inside and now here I am wearing ruined armor.” A pause, while she runs a finger along the burnt edge of her cuirass. Passively, poses you a question. “Did I die?”

Really, she's taking this remarkably well. You suppose that's largely due to your quick action healing her, it's like she was never even wounded.

Here ya go

of itself isn't that harmful.
[18:17] <Ishiggy> expelling the vys would help though. Or we could literally channel the vys that would end up "clogging" straight into the ring
[18:17] <JackCloudie> Yes, but I'm assuming that the excess of vys that the Warlock armor provided is what caused the clog in the first place.
[18:17] <JackCloudie> ^ Shiggy you a smart fucker.
[18:18] <Ishiggy> only because our reserves filled up and while we were asleep and couldnt make more space
[18:18] <Ishiggy> ty
[18:18] <Ishiggy> <3
[18:18] <~Soma_QM> You could probably pull that off, the Heavy Warlock Armor generates 10 vys/hour passively.
[18:18] <JackCloudie> It'll just be remembering to actually do it.
[18:18] <JackCloudie> So, coudl we make some slow leech sorta shit from us to the ring?
[18:19] <Ishiggy> It'd probably end up being soma including it narritivley
[18:19] <~Soma_QM> So you'd need to expell 1 vys every 6 minutes.
[18:19] <JackCloudie> True.
[18:19] <Ishiggy> all going stright into the ring
[18:20] <~Soma_QM> The ring would work for about 80 hours, at which point it would be full.
[18:20] <JackCloudie> I mean
[18:20] <~Soma_QM> Then you'd just need to vent the excess.

You tuck your helmet under one arm for now, leaning against a pillar as you speak with Mortia. “To give you the short version, you came under the influence of what I believe to be a slave used as the subject of experiments with a substance my people know simply as the Spice. It's a blue powder with strange properties, but typically used to enhance the magical capabilities of anyone who consumes it. Its side effects are numerous, but its benefits are immense.”

“You were driven to approach the creature and Fulvia held you back, but Profectus wasn't so lucky. He fired off that arm of his and promptly got his own spell thrown back in his face. So he was incapacitated and the creature somehow managed to get on top of him, even though I hadn't seen it move. I stabbed the bastard, it exploded into powder, and Profectus got a healthy dose of the stuff via his wounds, or perhaps inhalation. I'm not quite sure.”

You'd guess that it was probably his wounds, since so far as you recall the Centurion Armor was pretty good about stopping pollutants from reaching its wearer. Come to think of it, you've got an extra suit of Centurion Armor, you might be able to give that to Mortia.

Her voice snaps you out of your thoughts. “Mik, you okay?”

You refocus on your companion. Why is she looking at you like that? You're almost certain you're wearing pants. “What? Yeah, I'm fine. I was considering a possible solution to the issue with your armor.”

>>
>>45206011
Why didn't we ask the Paramatma about the worm carapace and spice?
>>
>>45206142
We still can. They're in the palace
>>
She raises an eyebrow. “You just sort of stopped talking and stared off into the middle distance. What happened after Profectus was exposed to this 'Spice'?”

Right, right. You were filling her in on what she missed. “Well, frankly he went a bit mad. He tried to kill me, the whole party really, and nearly succeeded in killing you. The right half of your body was basically burned away; arms, ribs, internal organs, all of it was just gone. Fulvia kept you alive and I restored you fully. You should be essentially unchanged, and in perfect health.”

She runs her fingers along the newly grown skin of her forearm, examining it carefully. “I suppose I'll thank you, then. Vys truly is a remarkable substance. Tell me, is there any chance that I could get a sample of this 'Spice'? I'd be curious to examine it from an alchemical standpoint.”

That's it? You were expecting a little more gratitude. Maybe some shock and awe. You were at least expecting her to be irritated with Profectus. “We've lost the techniques necessary for manufacturing Spice, but I'm sure if you looked hard enough in the markets of El-Amin, perhaps in that artifact shop I showed you previously, you could find a vial of the stuff. I wouldn't recommend tampering with it though. I myself have been under its effects and though the high is powerful, the come down is awful.”

She rises to her feet, and together the two of you walk towards the tunnel carved into the left wall. “I wasn't intending to use it myself.” Mortia admits. “I was mainly interested in using it for my experiments. Perhaps, the right combination of regents could alleviate or even remove its negative side effects.”

(2/4)
>>
A pause as you reach the ramp upwards, once again setting off through the long, winding loops towards the surface. “Okay, maybe I'd use a little. Only to get an idea for the side effects though, and to begin building up my immunity.”

A silence grows between you as the sound of voices becomes barely audible somewhere up ahead. You break it, concern evident in your tone. “Are you sure you're alright? I remember the first time I lost my arm I was terrified. Of course, it was but one in a long list of appendages that I'd lose, my manhood only recently joining that list, but I would understand a certain concern on your part as to the quality of my work.”

She holds up her bare arm, carefully testing its range of motion. “It seems a suitably accurate reproduction. I don't doubt your abilities when it comes to healing.” She frowns. “I do admit, I worry for my abilities as a Venefica. They rely heavily on my being 'whole', as it were. On my body truly being mine. Otherwise the poisons I consume, and indeed produce, may take their toll on my body. Deals with spirits are a powerful, but remarkably finicky, thing.”

She shrugs, letting her arm fall to her side. “Only time will tell, I suppose. Regardless, you made the right decision in healing my arm. I would have been horrified to wake up and suddenly lack an arm.”

Finally you see light ahead, light that you aren't creating that is, and stumble upon a party of guardsmen wearing the uniform of your House Guard. You promptly find a half dozen spears leveled in your direction, but they fall away as the lantern is moved closer to illuminate your face. You actually think you might recognize some of these men.

Then what are we waiting for?
>>
They press their fist to their chest, bowing low. Typically they would supplicate themselves for threatening the son of the Emir, but in a potentially dangerous situation, like scouting out an old ruin, that's not exactly practical. “Mirza Mikhael! Your associates mentioned you were still down here. We apologize for any offense.”

You wave them off. “It's of no concern. I take it my brother sent you down here to investigate, ensure that we did our job clearing away any potential threats?” Of course, the ruins below are absolutely rife with threats. All you did was close the door on them.

The guardsmen stand straight, their presumed leader nodding. “That's correct. We're to subdue any beast which may threaten the safety of Mirza Zaahir's court.”

You wave them on, and after a bit of awkward shuffling manage to get past them. It's requires a short trip further up the tunnel to reach the dungeons, where Fulvia appears to have made the tunnel's exit. It looks like this branch of cells has been emptied of prisoners.

While it would probably be prudent to speak with your brother, he's certainly not going anywhere. The health and safety of your companions is a more pressing concern. Your thoughts meld with those of your companions, the brooches allowing you to reach them. {I trust you've stayed out of trouble in the half hour I've been absent?}

Darzi is the first to respond. {We're in the entry hall, it seems Chryssa and Zahak provided this evening's meal and likely many more to come.}

You gesture for Mortia to follow you, beginning to make your way out of the dungeons. {Is that so? A good hunt then, I presume.}

Chryssa herself provides the details, her thoughts stained with half-remembered blood lust. {Indeed. We encountered in our hunt a pack of long-necked creatures with feathered heads preying upon the remains of a caravan. Zahak ate his fill of the camels and the beast themselves, while I managed to bring a few whole carcasses back. I've taken one of their heads as a trophy, and your brother has promised to have them mounted for me.}

A vague sense of confirmation radiates from Darzi as her voice once more whispers through your thoughts. {They're Kateri Sarada. Three times the height of a man, with enormous claws. Usually they'll burrow under the sand and wait in ambush for passer-by. I've lost good men to their attacks.}

You exit into the hallway proper, glad to be out of the dungeons and finally above ground gain. You take a deep breath, just enjoying the sensation of fresh air in your lungs. {I'll be there soon. Plate me up, would you?}
(1/4)
I got distracted by shitting about the IRC
>>
>>45207544
You mean Morty?
>>
You get a vague sort of agreement from Fulvia, and in short order you've managed to navigate the winding halls of your family's palace to reach the common room. A table has been set up where once a hookah pipe sat. Darzi, Chryssa, and Fulvia are arrayed around the table, a carved up hunk of what might be an enormous leg sitting on the table before them. Profectus has been propped up against the wall, still locked up stock still. The spell should be wearing off soon, but you dispel it with a wave of your hand anyway.

Your elven companion collapses into the pillows almost immediately, still unconscious. He'll probably be out for a few days. As you move to join your companions at the table, you feel another presence intrude upon your thoughts. {Papa! You'll never guess what we did today while you were helping Auntie! We fought dragons like me but without wings and with weird necks and huge claws and we killed them all! Their blood stained the sand beautifully, and I even got to eat their hearts! It was so much fun.}

His head pokes through the doorway not a moment later, though he doesn't try to enter. You remember getting him out the door was a nightmare, so large are his wings these days. Instead he shoots a jet of flame skywards, one which you gently curve away from the wooden beams supporting the ceiling. {I'm glad you had fun, Zahak. Though I'd prefer you didn't breath fire indoors for safety's sake. Did you get enough to eat?}

You pause by the doorway, gesturing for Mortia to continue on while you see to your son. You shoot a jet of fire across his underbelly, which he seems to quite enjoy based upon what you can glean through your emotional connection. {I ate until I was so full I didn't think I'd be able to fly! I could though, and I learned a lot! About not burning my food, I mean. Chryssa also showed me some Earth magic!}
(2/3)
>>
Sounds like they had quite the productive day. {Maybe sometime soon you and I will get to go hunting, or I could show you how to better control water. Right now I need to talk to the others for a bit about what happened while I was helping Mortia. We can talk more afterwards, alright?}

You're flooded by a sense of admiration and warmth, which you take for a yes. Zahak gently ducks his head back through the doorway, gouging a deep trench in the stone with one of his horns. You might need to fix that later.

You feel ethereal tentacles stripping you of your armor as you approach the table where your party sits, Ricky stowing each piece one by one. You'll really need to get him a goat sometime soon as a reward for his hard work. Sitting in front of a plate heaped with the pale meat of the creature's digitigrade leg, on a bed of rice with a few dried dates and some cilantro, you consider the rest of your party.

Darzi sits by Chryssa, she seems in better spirits but she's twitchier than usual. The grip on her fork is tight enough to whiten her knuckles, and she's really spearing away at the meat on her plate. Probably still angry. Mortia is merely pushing her food around lifelessly, her thoughts elsewhere, and Fulvia is staring at you as you begin to take your first few bites. That single blue eye of hers can really bore a hole straight through a man.

Profectus is, of course, slumped over a collection of pillows next to you. You take a moment to roll him gently on his side, just in case he vomits. Drowning on his breakfast would be a rather inauspicious way to die, especially for someone who's survived as much as he has.

>Try to explain to the others that it really wasn't Profectus' fault. They all may have done the same once exposed to Spice.

You savor the momentary peace of your meal, enjoying the taste of this strange creature's flesh. It's an unfamiliar taste, richer than you had expected. The meat falls apart in your mouth, and it's got a curious saltiness to it you can't quite attribute to spices alone. It mingles well with the sweetness of the dates, and the cilantro adds a pleasant hint of citrus.

You hadn't realized how hungry you were. You've put a significant dent in the contents of your plate without really intending to. Setting your fork aside a moment you clear your throat to garner the attention of your companions. “I think we ought to discuss Profectus, and what happened underground.”

Darzi frowns, her armor seeming to bunch up around her shoulders in response. It seems more reactive lately, for some reason. “What is there to discuss? He got exposed to that blue powder, went mad, and nearly killed you and Mortia. Good thing we all survived, so no harm done.”

You can tell by her tone that she doesn't exactly approve of the idea, but you're guessing she's still just angry. Come to think of it, she's been pretty irritable lately. “There's more to it than that. I'm not sure if you've noticed, but the brooches tend to transmit a certain level of surface thoughts and emotions to other people on the same network. I know for a fact that Profectus often suffers nightmares, and they've been worse lately.”

It might just be your imagination, but Darzi's gone just slightly paler than she was a moment ago. Probably realizing you've felt her nightmares as well. However, it's ultimately Fulvia that speaks. “I can confirm Mikhael's observations. As I am constantly monitoring the brooch network, it has been my experience that most of the party experience troubling dreams on a regular basis, for a given value of regular. The only true exceptions are Chryssa and Mikhael, though it could be argued that I lack sufficient data on Mikhael due to his irregular sleep schedule.”
(1/3)
>>
Your sleep schedule isn't really that irregular, you sleep like, twice a week usually. You've been sleeping very nearly every night lately. “Right, as Fulvia put it. I know we all have our own issues to deal with. It comes with the territory of being a glorified wandering grave robber I suppose. However, Profectus doesn't seem to hold himself together as well as most of us. Now, I can't begin to guess what any of you would have done when exposed to the spice, but I can tell you that it's Profectus' compromised sanity that caused him to attack the party.”

Chryssa slips off the Hiacian Signet Ring, passing the worm-emblazoned gold band across the table to you. You can even detect a hint of genuine concern in her tone when she speaks. “Perhaps he needs this more than I. I have felt fine lately.”

You pluck the ring from her fingers, slipping it into your cloak for now. “Perhaps, but that is a decision he can make for himself. For now I think we should all do our best to rest and relax. Between the battle against void creatures, the assassination attempt, and now this most recent endeavor of ours we've all been under a lot of stress. I'm sure our taking a break won't bring about the end of the world.”

This notion of a moment's rest is met with general agreement by the rest of the party, Darzi in particular seems placated. As your friends and companions return to their meals, it's ultimately Mortia who breaks a growing silence. “I should apologize, for rushing off like I did. I endangered all of you in the process, though it was my intention to go alone and spare you the trouble.” You might detect a hint of irritation, but it quickly fades. She turns to you, nodding solemnly. “Without you, I would have faced the corpse beast on my own and may have perished in the fight. I certainly would have died, or been permanently scarred, had you not been there to heal me later on.”

(2/3)
>>
She avoids mentioning the fact that she probably wouldn't have been in that situation to begin with if you hadn't been there, which you appreciate. “Consider your apology accepted, Mortia. I'll be taking the gemstone containing the spirit's soul to my brother once this is all said and done. If you'd like to accompany and see your name cleared you're welcome to.”

Mortia accepts, and after that conversation dies. You think everyone is fairly exhausted after the events of the day. As you plate up your second portion of whatever this creature is called, Darzi stalks off by herself. She vanishes up the stairs, Chryssa watching her with mild concern.

In all honesty it's probably her whole "im tired of adventuring"

When Soma has said that she really loves it but is a cynic so is bitchin about it.

Just gotta show her the light.

I'd probably make it like a DC 20/25/30 check. 20 would see her denying it fervently but would inspire her to later come back and admit that yeah, she does like adventuring. 25 would see her begrudgingly admitting, but not necessarily being happy about it. 30 would likely get her to really reconsider why she follows Mik, and ultimately realizing she does it because she enjoys the shit he gets involved in.

Taking orator into account it's an effective DC of 14, 19, 24. You could probably make the 19, but the 24 would be tough without spending a lot of vys or getting real good rolls.

Speaking of Zahak, is it hard for you to write for him? Feels like there's always very little with him.
>>
>>45209559
He's a toddler
>>
>>45209559
Kind of, I openly admit that it's sort of hard to write at the very least body language consistently. I mean, I've established that he purrs when he's really happy and that he ruffles his neck scales when afraid or angry. But yeah. His personality is sort of based on my younger cousin, who always used to get really excited whenever I was around.

It's not necessarily anything I struggle with to the point of pounding my head against a wall, but he's a bit harder to write compared to say, Profectus who pretty much writes himself most of the time. Mainly though you don't get much of Zahak because I always try to insert him into scenes when I can, since I don't get to write him much otherwise.
>>
>>45209593
Well at the very least when you do write him he's an adorable little bundle of scales and death.

You reach out to Darzi while gathering your remaining rice into an orderly heap, the meat forming a depression at the center. {If you have the time, I could use your help later. I've a theory regarding a suit of armor I previously bought and I'd like your assistance testing it out.}

There's a brief delay before she responds, a hint of either anxiety or perhaps irritation carrying through the brooch. {I was going to take a bath, but sure. After that I'd be glad to help.}

The connection is severed and you return to your meal. You make light conversation with Chryssa regarding the hunt she and Zahak went on, and the sights they saw. Apparently to the south she discovered a curious series of concentric rings set up inside an outcropping of rock, but they didn't seem to have any special properties. No doubt ancient but not obviously useful.

Once you've finished stuffing yourself you politely excuse yourself, citing a desire to explore the capabilities of a few of your artifacts. Folding your hands behind your back you admire the carefully carved ceiling decoration. The intricate geometric patterning is no doubt the work of an Earth Vatis, the use of space and shadow combining to form an almost dizzying collective of angles made yet more mesmerizing by the rich coloring.

Much of the foyer is decorated in this style, the pillars breaking up entire domes of carved paneling. You can only imagine the time required to shape something as detailed as this, even as an Earth Vatis it would seem time consuming. Regardless you soon enter the hall beyond, and you turn your thoughts instead to the brooch. {Whenever you're ready, I'll be waiting in the garden.}

Wasn't it estimated that the event would have made our family the most powerful or close to it.

She promises to be with you shortly and you make your way through the winding corridors to the expansive garden sheltered behind the palace. The plants are mostly those hardy enough to survive in the harsh environment of Pidjata. Well flower features prominently, its creeping vines set up on terraces and the bulbous sacks of stored water weighing heavily upon the old wooden beams. Come to think of it, those pods will probably be breaking open soon. The entire garden will smell like honey for weeks afterwards.

You remove your cloak with a flourish and set it down carefully on the ground, ripping it free to reveal the immensity of your Heavy Warlock Armor, or Siege Armor as you've come to think of it. From what you recall, it's supposed to stab an entire array of spikes all the way down your spine, rather than just one into your neck. Unfortunately you're having some trouble figuring out how one gets into the stuff.

It takes some poking and prodding but eventually you figure out that channeling vys into the circular plate just above where your heart would be 'unlocks' the armor. There's a hiss of air as the individual pieces stretch apart, allowing you to easily pluck them off one by one and slip them on. You start with the boots, and slowly build up to the cuirass, rerebraces, vambraces, pauldrons, and finally the gauntlets last of all.

The final piece is the helmet, but as you slide it onto your head you find yourself sorely disappointed. In addition to being ungodly heavy, the armor hangs loose off your frame. As though made for a man much larger than you. It hasn't adjusted to suit you, as most armors do upon your first time wearing them.
(2/4)
>>
On a hunch you try channeling a bit of vys into the cuirass, and immediately you feel something's different. There's a hiss of escaping air as the suit pulls its various disparate pieces together, each one locking into place one by one. You find you can't move your limbs any longer, the heavy armor proving unbearably restricting.

The helmet is the first thing to adjust. Where once it hung loose, now it fits snugly around your neck. You can't see anything but you're fairly certain your eyes are positioned properly. The rest of the armor follows suit, each piece adjusting to fit your frame one by one. It's still unbearably heavy, to the point that you feel as though you can barely move, but after perhaps a solid ten minutes of calibration at least the suit fits.

A needle slides easily into the hole at the back of your neck left by the Warlock armor. You'd forgotten to heal it after removing your helmet last time. The next nineteen don't go in quite so painlessly. It's a seemingly never ending series of painful intrusions, each one stabbing lower and lower along your spine until finally they reach your lower back, and the last of the spikes stabs itself into place just above your tailbone.

The flood of power that follows makes it immediately worthwhile. You can feel every hair on your head standing on end, sense the blood coursing through your veins and hear it pounding in your ears. An unbelievable warmth spreads through your chest, and then down through your gut into your legs. Every movement you make feels charged with barely withheld strength, the armor suddenly weightless.
(3/4)
>>
Then your vision returns, with a few curious additions. Certainly the garden was beautiful before, but now it teems with life. Spirits both beautiful and grotesque laze in the garden, some lounging amidst the well flower while others a giant toad with sixteen eyes and some sort of sentient dust creature are locked in a battle of wills, one likely seeking to consume the other. Smaller spirits drift occasionally through your field of view, only to vanish again a moment later. They're little more than points of light, but it almost seems like they're orbiting your head. Perhaps it's them to whom Fulvia was referring to earlier?

You sense Darzi coming before you see her, her thoughts hanging like a turbulent cloud upon the horizon. She emerges into the garden wearing a light robe and a pair of silk pants, the robe ending short. She brought with her the spear, but seems to have abandoned her armor for now. Unfortunate, you were looking forward to testing this suit against her own. You realize intuitively she's curious as to the nature of the armor you wear, but you're too distracted digging through her surface thoughts to care.

Amidst a thousand inconsequential details you find one gleaming insight. A profound sense of inadequacy, colored by envy and regret.

Oi. She didn't go mental like Prof. She's just been generally more irritable. Sorta like Chryssa before she got the ring actually.
>>
>>45210001
Inadequacy is probably from her only standing out in martial arts, which isn't really useful. Mik's a crazy mage, Prof can vaporize almost anything, Chryss is super strong, Mortia has crazy artifacts, and Zahak is a dragon. Bet she doesn't feel useful, especially after letting her old group of soldiers down.

Envy and regret, she regrets getting her men killed, regrets going adventuring, is envious of us/the group/probably where her friends are in terms of career in the guard.

Chryssa's village. One of the councilmen of Anthus. An entire district of Anthus. An entire village of civilians affiliated with a pirate group. Varistha Sehzade. The people who worshiped the spirit in Anthus. The old guard outside the Rhynian Ruin in Licae. Probably more.

She has that "-Odd Spear (Unknown Effects)".
