You, Vance, and Violet have arrived back at the Pokemon league. With surprising ease, you’re able to find Dick. Instead of his usual entourage, he’s sitting alone in a cafe. He’s absentmindedly rolling Regirock’s Pokeball with a finger.

“I think it’s safe to say he knows something’s up with Regiock. Now, how are we going to get it free from his grip?” Violet leans back, watching how you and Vance strategize.

“Well, Regirock will eventually just take off the next time it has a chance, right?”

Violet smacks Vance upside the head. “You’d let it continue on like that?”

Vance rubs the back of his head. “Fine! I can go in there and threaten to break his fingers every day until he lets it go.”

Violet amusingly rests her chin on her palm. “He’ll threaten you right back with legal action.”

“He can do that. I’ll remind him it won’t undo years of crippling arthritis though. He doesn’t seem like the type to want to take that risk.”

Violet presses against him. “My my. Maybe you’re the friend of Robin’s I should be stealing away.”

“Don’t touch me.”

She pouts and backs away, then turns to you. “I suppose you’re going to what, bribe him?”

Sneasel starts lifting out his wallet. You signal him to put it back, which he grudgingly does.

You guys talk for awhile. Not about anything specific, but just trainer’s talking shop. He tells you about a close battle he hand one time, you tell him about the time you and Raistlin faced off.

“No way!” He laughs. “What would you do if you lost?”

You shrug. “I didn't think about that.”

He waves off the waitress that asks if he wants anything else. “So, what did you take time out of training for the Elite Four to talk to me about?”

You swap Devon and Zappy Dan for Destiny and Trunks. You’ll want to focus on a specific team to take on Cliff.

“Alright. Well good luck. We’ll all be cheering for you.”

You thank him and end the call. With his assurances, you know you won’t have to worry about Delmar again.

You look up the hotel stairs. You’ll drop in, say hi, then find the Pokedex repair guy.

You walk up the stairs and stop at the door. You turn the knob and enter.

“Kat!” Clair shouts and runs over, twintails and chest bouncing. She stops in front of you. and straightens out her shit, trying to act normal. “You’re back early.”

“Well I-”

Wham! Robin’s tiny body flies out of nowhere and wraps around you. Skinny arms and legs trap you as she pelts you with kisses.

“Hey Robin!”

“S-she didn’t try anything weird, right? You still like me?”

You enjoy wearing Robin like a straightjacket for a minute before she lowers herself. “I missed you too.”

You guys catch up. Claire’s been helping Robin train, Jeanine’s been helping research Cliff.

There were four trainers, including you and Robin, that made it far enough to challenge the Elite Four. Cliff is taking on the first challenger right now. It’s playing on the TV.

Clair leans over. “Jeez. You smell even worse than Jeanine.”

“I heard that,” Jeanine yells.

You sit down on the couch with the girls and watch the match.

“Cliff keeping to his usual style, has offered a three on three, but the challenger opted to have a full six on six match.”

“Few people take him up on that.”

Cliff is facing off against one of the other trainers that made it this far.

He opens with his Hippodown against a Vileplume. He makes quick work of it using Fire Fang in the sandstorm.

You get the sense the commentators don’t like his matches. It’s hard to see anything in the whipping sand.

The sandstorm seems weird. It’s normally not this obscuring. He’s able to take advantage of his opponent’s inability to land a solid blow. Hippodown is a tank, too, able to withstand a lot of damage as the match goes on. The opponent’s Wailord blasts a heavy stream of water that seems to do little damage, and Hippodown uses dig repeatedly to attack under it’s belly where it can't properly defend itself.

That thing is fast too.

The challenger’s Pokemon fall, one by one. Eventually they’re able to take down Hippdown on their sixth Pokemon, Ninjask. Ninjask is able to take down Cliff’s Swampert too, but faints from the effort.

Robin watches closely too. Why was Swampert so much easier than Hippodown?

You give Robin another quick kiss and promise you’ll be back soon. You arrive at the sketchy looking area on the card that Violet gave you, and enter what you assume is the right shop.

“Waddya want?”

“Umm, do you repair Pokedexs?”

He points to the sign. “What’s it say?”

You squint. “I can’t read it.” The sign is covered in a thick layer of dust.

He hobbles over.“Huh? What?” He spits on it then wipes it with his sleeve. It says Pokedex repair. “There. Now whatddya got?”

You take out the Pokedex and he whistles. “Well I’ll be. They don’t make those anymore. Yeah, I can fix whatever’s wrong with it.” He starts examining it. It scans you and calls you a Magikarp. “But it seems to work fine to me.” He laughs to himself, then coughs. “A wipe will take a day.” Backups’ll cost you.” He quotes an absurdly high rate. You’re loaded now, but that still feels unfair.

“You want how much for a backup?”

He scoffs. “These things don’t have normal memory, like the modern models. It’s all on an older system. Much more specialized. Very easy to corrupt.”

“Gee. That sounds complicated. I’ll have to get a second opinion from the other places in town.”

He laughs. “Ain’t no other places in town that can handle an old ‘dex like that.”

“I guess I won’t know until I try.”

His ears perk up. “Okay. Okay.” He pitches a much lower price.

That’s better.

He hooks it up to a strange old machine that looks like some sort of fancy tapedeck, then starts reading a printout. “Awww heck.”

“What?” You lean over and look at it, like you’ll somehow know what it says.

“Well, you see this symbols?” He shows you the readout. “They’re supposed to just be regular words. Something’s screwy.” He moves to turn it off, but you're fast enough to stop him. “It’s corrupt as all get-out. There’s nothing to backup.”

As he says that though, the printout starts giving a repeated image, over and over again. It’s a constant printout of a pixelated Pokemon!
