Recap:

Following a brief and profitable appearance at Scyth Corps monumental mockery of justice, you went to the Underground Grand Prix.

As it turns out, the race consists of three legs and teams are scored according to whatever member of their team places highest in each leg, with the total determining the winner. Derek placed 6th in the first leg and you were poised to move beyond him going into the second but bad decisions resulting in you hitting a sprouter at high speed, injuring you, Jeremy, and your car.

Now in 18th place and barely moving, you struggle to get your bearings as infested humanoids shuffle towards your location.

The car reeks of must and guts. The gas mask your wearing is hopefully providing some protection from whatever strain the sprouter was carrying but you’re probably going to want to pump yourself full of anti-fungals after you finish the race. If you finish the race.

The engine is back on and you’re moving slowly, trying to escape the horde of sprouters that are slowly but surely rousing to the idea that a fresh victim sits in their midst. The turbocharger has vanished beneath the hood like a frightened animal as you push through them at low speed. These monsters must be as old as the war, as the infection has consumed nearly every part of them that was recognizably human. Tattered pieces of bone and scalp hang from craniums that could no longer contain brain matter intertwined with swelling fungal growth and hands have degraded into ropey messes that flap ineffectually at their sides as they shamble closer to impede your progress.

You wipe the blood from your eyes, wincing as you touch each of the glass granules embedded in your forehead. More cars shoot past, taking advantage of the opening created by the sprouter mob focusing on you.

Beside you, Jeremy stirs and moans as he returns to consciousness.

“What- what happened?”

“We had a little accident. It’s fine.”

“I- I think I’m hurt.”

Like you, Jeremy has been stricken by broken glass and battered by the force of the collision. Blood drips from beneath his untrimmed black bangs and runs along the contours of his young face, framing it as he pleads with you, shaking like a leaf.

“We can’t do this, we have to drop out.”

You don’t know about dropping out but you could give up on winning. But what kind of message would that send? What kind of father do you want to be?

>taking first option, since I was 3/4th done writing it when the tying votes arrived

Your head pounds and it gets worse each time a sprouter clumsily bounces off the hood.

“Vince?”

“Ugh.”

“W-what are we going to do?”

“Jeremy… We can’t just stop, Jeremy. There’s too much riding on this. I'm going to get you through but we still have to try and place... I promise not to put you in any more danger than we absolutely need to be-"

Before you can finish, the ground rumbles beneath you and the sprouters lope off in every direction, panicked. A huge worm bursts through the bottom of the elevated highway, swallowing a huge portion of it almost from underneath you. You slam on the gas and the tires of the Elevon squeal as you take off towards the next tunnel.

Behind you you can hear brakes screeching as the other racers try and pass over the slim space left behind by the worm's destruction.

The tunnel returns you to racing in darkness but the path is unusually straight. You start to wonder why it's so rigid when you emerge onto a claustrophobic city grid, where the buildings all touch a ceiling perhaps 30 feet high.

Up ahead you can see one of the racers who passed you earlier. His luxury import squeals as he turns sharply at a 3-way intersection up ahead and goes right, moving around a mysterious glass structure.

As you move closer to the intersection with its dead stoplight, you notice enormous concave discs hanging from nearby buildings, focused on this structure.

What little remains of the signage indicates a highway to the right and a... lift to the left?

You accelerate towards the intersection and realize that the glass structure is some sort of greenhouse, probably meant to provide food for those who would have had to retreat down here in a nuclear war. You can't see much through the fogged up glass but it looks like things are still growing in there. Rather than confirm that, you turn right and find yourself on an upwards ramp.

Along the way you pass the car you saw earlier (his import seems to have broken down on the incline and he's stuck) and catch another who seems to be running out of juice. Are the amateur rigs running out of power?

Seemingly in answer to your question, you pass by three more vehicles, all either stalled or slowed dramatically. None of them look like they belong to pros.

The curving ramp finally opens onto a huge straightaway but the road is curiously jet black and crunches as you drive over it. You're confused until Jeremy whistles appreciatively. The road is coated by some kind of mass roach migration.

Up ahead, you can see the other racers slowing as they attempt to navigate the slippery terrain.

You plow through the roaches, their blood and guts not gumming the wheels of the Elevon so much as feeding them. You blow past a few more amateurs who are trundling along and then a few pros, their delicate machines struggling to cross the mat of biomass at high speed.

Behind you Jeremy raises a vast hump of roaches that blocks the middle of the road. In your rearview you can see at least one racer try to plow directly into it, coating his vehicle and quickly spinning out and into the barrier. His wreck will only add to the challenge for the racers behind you, Lucas included.

Ahead is another corkscrew ramp and the navigator indicates that you're nearly on top of the next checkpoint. This is clearly the way to the surface and just up ahead you can see Derek holding onto 7th place.

With the aid of Luca's slipstream, you gather speed and barrel onto to the ramp and high speed. 'Pedebody digs deep into the upholstery to remain in place as the G forces add up.

You slingshot past 2 multi-million dollar vehicles in your beat-up Elevon, as the car pushes its limits for you. you can only imagine what the gamblers in the crowd are thinking right now.

Just as the corkscrew is about to climax, you pass two more cars that are aggressively trading paint and land yourself, unbelievably, in 4th place as you swing below the neon cockades of the 2nd checkpoint and out into the blinding light of the Hong Kong streets.

Calling the streets blinding is a bit misleading. The sun has set and night has cast its cozy, UV-free blanket of darkness over the city. But the vibrant lights of a main street are enough to put stars in your eyes as you return to the surface like a high octane baby shot from the womb of mother earth herself.

Colors seem unnaturally vibrant and you struggle to retain your typical level of control as you weave through traffic. The other racers seem to suffer the same problems.

You're able to pass Barry Mercury (the Quicksilver racer from America in his Star Spangled Rocket!) and Vasily Grenev, two of the most famous racers on the planet. Their cars have been coated over with "anonymizing" paint jobs for the benefit of the doubt with the Scyths but it's pretty obvious who they are, even if they do look like dopes when they get caught up in lanes of AI traffic.

In the front of the pack there is only Julie Arwenna in her monstrously powerful car.. Next to you, Jeremy attempts to hack her vehicle... no dice. The attempt backfires and the Illegal nearly fries itself in Jeremy's hands before shutting down.

You do your best to remain in second while waiting for Lucas or even Derek to show but neither of your teammates appear in your rear view. You set your jaw as the car continues to move forward. Your knuckles glow white beneath the grime and blood as you tighten your grip on the steering wheel.

“Son,” you say.

Being addressed as “son” for the first time catches Jeremy’s attention. His normally tired eyes widen with intrigue.

“If there’s something I know, it’s that you’ll never be anything if you spend your life running away from a challenge. You can’t be WEAK! The minute you show WEAKNESS they’ll swoop in and take EVERYTHING from you. Understand?”

He freezes, caught off-guard by your burst of conviction. Maybe it’s just the pep pills but you feel strangely self-aware. He must think you half-mad but at the same time you’re certain this is the right course of action. Dead certain.

“We’re NOT going to give up, not even if they try and kill us for it. I need you to do this for me, I need you to touch Arwenna’s car. Will you do that?”

“I-I don’t know if I can-”

“I didn’t ask if you could! I asked if you WOULD!”

He nods slowly, then again with more conviction. That means it’s just on your to catch her.

You floor it, dodging traffic in the way you’ve become unnaturally good at. Cits scream, cheer, and curse from the sidewalks and their own cars, enjoying the race or despising it in near equal measure. Many just run for the nearest shelter, fearful of high speed crashes.

You take emergency evasive maneuvers to protect yourself from the gang members and your timing couldn't be better as the leader comes into view on his still-battered looking cycle and fires an RPG.

The spiraling projectile flies into a nearby building, raining glass on the street and popping the tires of Cit cars. The Elevon's ride is unperturbed and several of the riders lose control thanks to the litter spread on the streets by their own leader. The Sanic-wannabe himself remains on the road, though he's cast away his spent RPG for an automatic rifle that he's struggling to aim.

You gain somewhat on Arwenna and Lucas gains on you though he's currently engaged by a duel with Grenev. Jeremy notes that you're rapidly covering ground towards the final checkpoint and it's debatable whether Lucas will catch up in time to overtake Arwenna himself. No mantises have arrived as of yet.

I think we have guns in the car. If only we'd shown Jeremy how to use them. Best for him to just keep ducking.

You attempt to catch back up to Arwenna and go on the offensive but you struggle to match her speed. Behind you, the gang leader fires his weapon, fumbles it due to recoil, and loses control of his massive bike, plowing into parked cars.

Lucas finally overtakes Grenev and gets close to you. At current speeds, you have maybe two minutes left in this race. This will most likely be your penultimate decision.

Hey, if the people ahead of us crash and die the runner up must win the prize by default right.

>>45187930

This is correct.

Sorry for leaving before btw. I took a very short nap (I have some burnout going on today) and then had to pick someone up. It all took longer than expected.

Slipstream means behind Vince doesn't it. How does that work.

Casual rolling.

I can't tell if that's rolling for mantises or the blonde bombshell's defense against mantises.

Also I wonder what those specifics and details Lucas and Derek were gonna share with Vine if he had actually talked to them before the race were...

>15,17,13
>give Lucas the advantage of your slipstream

You keep the car steady and let Lucas draft behind you at high speed. The low profile of his import fits neatly behind the Elevon and he gains a great deal of speed before slingshotting ahead into the distance. You watch as he goes head to head with Arwenna just in time for mantises to begin kamikaze-ing out of the night sky on both drivers.

>>
>>45188317

Arwenna easily dodges the mantises and Lucas does the same. They remain neck and neck as the finish line, the end of aptly named Boundary street grows closer. As the finish line arrives, fireworks explode over the city, a grand display of criminal influence.

You zoom across the line in 3rd place, a respectable showing confirmed by your navigation device. You'd call Lucas to find out where he finished but you've no phone...

>Official Team Checkpoint Finishes: 6th, 4th, 1st

I'm going to need a little time to calculate the points for all the other teams but the good news is chances are very good that you've won. Hypothetical congratulations!

The bad news is that I'm putting the quest on indefinite hiatus. Exterminator is badly in need of restructuring and is starting to feel creatively bankrupt. I've made a list of everything that needs work, from character development to the increasingly messy trait system to the unfinished lore articles moldering away on my hard drive. I'm going to work on that.

At the same time, I want to work on some other stuff. I've had some stories I wanted to write and one-shots that I've been thinking about running, so I won't be completely absent. It's just a hiatus for Exterminator, deserved after 42 threads.

Any stuff I wrte relevant to the quest will continue to show up in my twitter @qmsimmons and anything irrelevant will go to my other twitter, @dutchschultz9 .

I'll go ahead and archive + hang around for a few hours.
>>
>>45188317
I guess, Vince's car would have been better equipped to discourage mantises not to attack it no matter how close it was to the other car.
>>
>>45188552
Where was Derek all race. Did he get stuck on Worm Canyon or the cockroach clusters.
>>
>>45188552
So what good would talking to teammates beforehand have done.

So, in downtime gotta patch up sonfu and get the sprouter-exposure treatment.

Actually I dunno how antifungals would even interact with Jeremy's current symbiosis... GEC probably found out in the files somewhere.
>>
Balls, I archived it as Quest #42.

>>45188576

He fell behind in the last leg, as was the plan, and helped Lucas reach you.
>>
>>45188598
>regarding Jeremy being contaminated

I figured Jeremy's pre-existing infestation would defend itself, effectively acting as his immune system.

He may have the fungal sonfu equivalent of a nasty cold for a little while.

>teammates

Aside from the few celebrities you recognized, you would have had some intel on other racers and a more coherent strategy with the option to offer some of your own input.

Nothing huge, but an added bit of depth.

It was a incredibly average roll. Modifiers were everything.

We didn't roll for Lucas dodging them though?

In the end, the mantises were pointless.
>>
>>45188688

Mantises suffered an incredibly bad roll with the d100. But it was something of a gambling strategy to begin with, considering the mantises have a hard time keeping up with targets moving this fast. They did serve a purpose in giving Lucas the very narrow edge he needed but it was almost not enough.
>>
>>45188725
Then Jeremy can feel accomplished. He gets a video game after Vince collects his winnings. No, two video games.
>>
>>45188651
Was the slipstream choice the easier, logical one?

I guess the Elevon is still too slow to accelerate.

How much bad decisions and bad luck hit us in hindsight.

Also really, we mostly took Jeremy cuz we didn't want to let him out of our sight and he ended up both getting hurt and helping.

That wasn't planned.
>>
>>45188960

Yes. It's a little bit ridiculous that you did as well as you did but your modifiers are pretty godly at this stage.

>>45189180

You dodged most of the consequences from your bad decisions. I've grown soft as a QM and don't rip heads off like I used to. Another reason for the hiatus.

You'd be surprised by what's planned and what isn't. Or maybe not.

You were actually very lucky for much of the race, though you collectively have a tendency to underestimate your chances when you get hurt and overestimate them when you have a hot streak.

Something to consider as I rework the system, to be sure.

I think when we pick up with Vince again, he'll be in a more stable position from which to hatch the next stage of his life. He's slipped out of GEC servitude and become quite wealthy. His sonfu is alive and he deserves quality time, Russians be damned.
>>
>>45189269
>Another reason for the hiatus.
Of course, you must take a retreat to meditate in the mountains until you rehone your killer instinct.

So which ones were the bad ones. The worst decision was avoided, taking the high road.

What kind of death awaited down below? Fire or suffocation?
>>
>>45189661

>what kind of death waited down below

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landfill_gas

Gindrinker's Bay was actually a bay before being filled with trash IRL and parts are still closed off due to landfill gas buildup. Down below were pockets of invisible methane gas that might have been ignited by your engine. This is also why everything smelled awful when you first arrived.

An actual bad decision was not trying to make that makeshift phone network at the start, which might have allowed you to communicate in a limited fashion with your teammates.

A good/bad decision was not taking the lift, which had about a 50/50 chance of being a shortcut or a hold up.

Not driving through the greenhouse was pretty much a good decision on every level.

Boosting when you did was an excellent decision.

Not taking the shortcut on the high road was probably a good decision though it could have paid off as well (it would have resulted in a few passes if successful).

I disapproved of the middle road you took at the start of the thread (the racing more conservatively path) but it obviously paid off.

Really, you mostly made good decisions in retrospect.
>>

Well not anymore once we foolishly rolled to hack.

Vince fails the majority of his technology attempts.

Just saying, so glad Vince lied to Chen and drove them away.

The Russians clearly would have made anyone Vince was honest with, like Lopez, a target. Or anyone that he appeared to give two cares about, like Jeremy.

It was for her own good. Vince is dangerous now. And also is one less person to be potentially kidnapped.
