This has been, without a doubt, the worst experiment you've ever taken part in. Worse, even, than the one Marco showed you when you were twelve, the one with the frogs.

Pushing that unwelcome memory from your mind, you drag your weary body up the rickety ladder and feel the warming rays of sun upon your face. What a curious world this is, you think vaguely to yourself, to have a looming full moon outside of the fairy kingdom and glorious sunshine within. Flopping down onto the ground, you let that impossible sun bathe you in warm light for a few moments more, the gentle breeze sending long grass tickling against your cheeks. You've earned this, a little break from the grind.

Sighing softly, you fight down the urge to close your eyes and take a nap. The last time you indulged in a little sleep, it didn't end so well. Sitting up, you rub a hand across your forehead and look over to where Scathach is waiting. The witch is staring up into the sky, one hand pressed to the bill of her hat against the breeze. She looks serene, an illusion that is immediately shattered as she approaches you and speaks up.

“Very well done!” she cries, her bright voice at odds with the blood dried onto her wounded arm, “I'm pleased to announce that you've exceeded my expectations!”

So it WAS a test. Apparently not content with the fact that you're helping her with this absurd experiment – as opposed to, say, turning her in at the first opportunity – Scathach has also decided to grade you. When all this is over, she's going to owe you a serious favour. Oblivious to your frustrated thoughts – or perhaps not, she always has a way of knowing these thigns – Scathach turns and glides off. Following her out, you find Elliot and the other waiting beyond the castle walls. True to his word, Elliot kept them from seeing too much.

“All done, then?” the foppish young man asks softly as he falls in beside you, “Turned out easier than I expected, actually, to get those two to linger back. I thought it was going to be like herding cats, to give an honest account of it.”

So, you ask, what did he tell them – or is that something you don't want to know?

“I told Leon it was going to be very theoretical, very scientific. He might be quite the charmer – eh, which is to say that some people might find him charming – but he's no intellectual,” Elliot's thin lips raise in a warm smile, “And I told Joseph it might be rather unethical, not the sort of thing that a nice boy like himself needs to be concerned with. The best lies, I think, have a strong basis in the truth.”

You're almost tempted to ask if Elliot has to lie often, but you soon come to the conclusion that you'd rather not know. In either case, the chance to ask soon passes you by as Scathach's cheery voice drifts over to you.

“Come along now,” she announces as you hurry to reach her, “There's work to be done!”

Alright, you ask even as you fear what the answer you receive might be, what's the next step in Scathach's plan? You've got to get this divine fruit... thing back to Carnby, right?

“Correct,” Scathach nods, “I'll extract the vital essence and, if my theories are correct, that should bring our mutual friend back over to the land of the living – for good, this time. Then, all that's left to do is to clear up the filth and we'll be ready to present him to the queen. She's going to be delighted!”

Filth, you repeat, what exactly is that supposed to mean?

“Well,” Scathach, without turning around, gives a vague gesture, “He's been wandering amongst the dead for quite some time, you know. We'll need to wash out the impurities before he can be considered “clean” enough for a public appearance. Oh, but you don't need to worry – it'll all happen automatically, as part of the rejuvenating process.”

That's fine then, you begin to say, that doesn't sound too-

“We'll just need to kill it once it takes physical form,” the witch adds with relish, “Burn it, I imagine. Fire is always what you need for cleansing and purifying, don't you know?”

That's about what you expected, you sigh. One more demon to kill. Pushing that unwelcome thought from your mind – deal with that later, when the time comes – you ask about Nadja. She's not going to suffer any side-effects, is she?

“That all depends on what you'd consider to be a side-effect,” Scathach decides, “I imagine the effects will fade with time, but currently she's infused with something close to divine power. Magically speaking, she's going to be terribly powerful so don't go around shocking people for fun.”

Yes, fine, but she's not going to suffer from... magical cancer or anything, is she?

“Goodness, no,” Scathach laughs, “I don't think so, at least!”

Great.

Allowing the witch to lead you back to the palace, she holds up a gloved hand to stop you. “Now,” she says quietly as you both move a little away from the group, “This next part might be a little sensitive. It's far from ideal, but the fewer people to know about this the better.”

In other words, you mentally translate, get rid of the others. Send them away and fight whatever this impure creation is alone.

“Not alone!” Scathach is hasty to add, “I'll be fighting alongside you. I'm not one to shirk my responsibilities, after all!”

Frowning, you fall into silence as you consider your next move. True enough, the fewer people that know about this – especially the horrors that fill Scathach's hidden workshop – the better, but you're not so keen on fighting an unknown demon alone. Can you really bring someone else into this, knowing that they might be caught up in the consequences if something goes wrong? What's more, is there anyone you can trust to keep this quiet?

Elliot, as he has implied, is no stranger to secrets. Is that enough, though, to let him know what you've really been working towards?

“Are you going to think about this forever?” Scathach asks with a twinkle of humour in her eyes, “When you're ready, I know a good way to sneak back into the palace. There are tunnels all over the place, don't you know?”

Elliot. Warn her ahead of time that this might not be pretty, but we could use her help.

Got to agree. Maybe I'm off base but Elliot always seemed like they'd be able to deal with something like this. As long as they're not the one being chopped up at least.

>>45174972

No matter how you look at things, going alone was always the least appealing option. Even if it means spreading around your dirty secrets a little, you'd rather walk out alive. If that means asking Elliot for help, so be it. With a slight nod, you gesture for the suited man to come over and you open the dialogue in a hushed voice. He can keep a secret, you murmur, can't he?

“Mia dear,” Elliot can't hide his grin, “You have no idea. Not only can I keep a secret, but I don't judge, either!”

Nodding after a brief pause, you decide to give him a few hints as to what to expect. It won't be clean or pretty, you warn, but you're going to need his help. Scathach has got some more work to be done, and this is the really dirty stuff. Knowing that, you ask, is he willing to lend a hand?

“Well, loathe as I am to risk getting my clothes dirty...” Elliot nods sharply, his smile taking the edge out of the gesture, “Certainly, I'll do it. Can't have you running off and getting yourself hurt, can we? The others, I presume, are not invited to this little party?”

That's right, you confirm, so if he could...

“My pleasure,” he says with a wink, before turning back to the others. “You two,” he announces, “You'd be best off heading back to the bar – we've got some legal issues to sort out, and they might take some time. You know how it is – sign in triplicate, and all that. Fear not, we'll be back with you as soon as we can!”

Joseph and Leon trade a look – an entirely unconvinced look, you reckon – and a shrug. For a moment, Joseph looks like he's about to ask all kinds of difficult questions but then he thinks better of it. “Stay out of trouble,” he finally tells you, before turning and strolling off. Leon is quick to follow, throwing a quick grin Elliot's way as he does so.
>>
>>45175129

Legal issues, you ask Elliot as Scathach leads you to a small cairn, is that the best he could come up with?

“Short notice, dear,” he reminds you, “And really, is it that far from the truth? Call me paranoid, but I sense a degree of illegality at work here.”

Well, you mutter, you can't really disagree there. Before you can say anything else, Scathach has blasted aside the pile of rocks to reveal a dank tunnel. Another dank tunnel, you should say. Her injury apparently forgotten – or healed when you weren't looking – Scathach gracefully drops down the hole, vanishing from sight. You follow her down, taking the ladder rather than risking the drop. The loamy walls are encrusted with softly glowing lichen, so that you don't need any additional light to follow in Scathach's footsteps. Soon, the tunnel opens out into a corridor of dark stone, a few stains darkening the tiles further still.

“I shan't ask,” Elliot decides, peering at one of the stains from a safe distance. Nodding silently, you walk the straight corridor until you emerge into the laboratory itself, the withered corpse that once bore the name “Carnby” sitting upon his throne as you remember. Scathach is hurrying around the room, busying herself with opening slits in the floor. It almost looks like she's preparing for a flood, or some other rush of liquid. On a nearby table, the divine fruit – a throbbing, crystalline heart – sits reverently upon a platter.

“Now,” Scathach says without looking up, producing a small knife from within her robes, “Once we begin, things might get a little hectic. Do you have any questions before we begin?”

What exactly is she planning on doing with Carnby, you ask, when all this is over and done with?

“Well,” Scathach begins as she runs the blade of her knife down the surface of the fruit, “I was going to start by taking him to Titania – in private, of course.”

Of course, you agree, and then?

“Well,” Scathach says again, with a note of hesitation this time. In the silence that follows, the only sounds are a slick rustling as she forces her fingers into the fruit and the rattle of Elliot's shoes scuffing against the tiles. “I'd explain what happened. Some of it, I mean. The bits she'd want to hear, at least.”

It's a sensitive issue, you point out, and she hasn't thought about it any more than “Just tell her”?

“I've been thinking about other things!” the witch remarks as she pulls a glistening red crystal – like a shard of solid blood, you think – from the centre of the fruit, “Ah, hush a moment. This is sensitive...” Turning away from you, she places the red crystal into a small vice and turns the handle, squeezing a shimmering fluid out into a vial.

“Mia,” Elliot whispers as he looks into a glass jar, “Is that a Pixie?”

Probably, you murmur back, you did warn him it might not be pleasant.

“Titania, you see, is pragmatic,” Scathach thinks aloud, more forming her own plans than discussing them with you, “She'll see that there's nothing to be done about the past. She can't undo what I've achieved here. The question, then, is how she'll move forwards when the results are standing before her. When the result, in this case, is her beloved husband, how could she complain?”

Of course, you reply drily as you look around the chamber of horrors you stand within, how could anyone complain about this?

“Now then!” the witch declares as she fastens the vial to one of the spindly metal armatures above Carnby's throne, “Begin the procedure!”

Wait, you blurt out as you watch the red fluid creep down into the dried corpse, is she even sure that this is going to work?

“Mostly sure,” Scathach murmurs to herself as she watches, rapt, “There may be some... deviations I hadn't accounted for, but... mostly sure, yes.”

You open your mouth to sigh, but the exasperation dies in your throat as something happens. As new life appears to bloom within Carnby's body, a colourless fluid begins to seep from his pores. It starts slowly, but soon it runs from his body is slick, reeking streams. To a drop, this expelled corruption flows down into the oubliette beneath his throne, forming great piles of... gunk. No, not just piles – the fluid is actively gathering together into one single mass, forming into a vaguely humanoid figure.

“Just as I expected,” Scathach nods to herself, “The vile secretions have taken on a false mockery of existence – it must be destroyed!”

At least, you consider, you're in a good vantage point. Here, you can summon your demons without fear of being dragged into the combat yourself. It's almost like a gladiatorial arena, with you and Elliot looking down upon the carnage below. Time to put that disgusting creature out of its misery, you think to yourself as you prepare to summon your demons.

Scathach told you to bring fire – that's something you can certainly manage. A shame that Parvati is out of action, but Minotaur's fires should be enough especially once Kagutsuchi has lent his strength to the fight. With Scathach helping out and Fortuna bending the odds in your favour, this shouldn't take too long. It'll give you a chance to test out Nadja's new power as well – something you've been pretty eager to see ever since she was exposed to that wellspring of power.

“All will be fire, all will be ashes,” Nadja intones as she appears, that oddly deep voice echoing from some place deep inside her before her usual perky tones take over, “Uh, sorry boss, that keeps happening!”

“Not wrong though,” Minotaur snorts, curls of flame emerging from his mouth as she speaks, “I'll burn that thing to ashes!” Without a word, he stomps forwards and wrenches one of the metal grills off the floor, leaping down into the pit. Chuckling deeply, Kagutsuchi follows in Minotaur's wake, dropping down to confront the living corruption.

Flowing across the ground rather than walking, the corruption circles the pair of demons, thick liquid dripping from its shifting form. It almost seems to be beckoning them closer, urging them into making an attack.

Unearthly winds churn and swirl around Nadja as she gathers every spark of power in the dormant air to her grasp. Giggling at first, and then cackling, she clenches her fists around two blinding spheres of barely contained power.

Then she sneezes, the power discharging with a fizzle. Moaning with disappointment, she drops down into a petulant squat, glaring down at the two muscular demons below, as if envying them and their more stable powers. They certainly don't let you down – Minotaur's skull mouth yawns wide and vomits out a rolling tide of fire, while Kagutsuchi plants his hands to the ground – into that festering oil – and ignites the fluid there. The two sources of fire merge and become one, clinging to the slick corruption and blackening it with greasy ash. The fires only die, in fact, when Scathach calls up a great wind to buffet the creature – yet leaving it somehow unharmed, as if immune to the witch's magic.

“Hmm, fascinating,” Scathach notes, nodding to herself, “Direct action, I think, is necessary.”

You're about to ask what “direct action” means when the corruption lashes out at you, one arm stretching out to inhuman lengths and nearly swatting Nadja off her perch. Shrieking, the fairy child is forced to dance away as Scathach leaps down, one foot extended in a lunging kick. Her blow shears through the demon's arm, causing the limb to burst into fluid and rush back to reform.

“It's been a while since I had a proper work out,” Scathach taunts, cracking her knuckles, “So let's make it a good one!”

As the corruption's sickly figure takes form once more, it immediately breaks up into thick liquid again as part of the next attack. It swings and arm through the air, the limb dissolving into a spray of glutinous oil that shimmers through the air. It's cold – you can feel the sudden drop in temperature all the way from your “safe” vantage point – and freezes into a hail of shrapnel before it's travelled half the distance of the pit.

Minotaur, though, is having none of it. He ducks forwards, beneath the slime's arc, and spits a glob of burning phlegm onto his closed fist. With the limb wreathed in fire, he slams a powerful uppercut into the writhing corruption. It actually splits apart here, the top half sent flying into the air even as Kagutsuchi seizes hold of the legs and throws them aside, tossing them onto a lingering fire to burn.

As your eye tracks the flying torso, a sinister laugh reaches your ears. Her moment of panic long forgotten, Nadja is giggling with even more enthusiasm than before. Her eyes are glowing again, and stray arcs of lightning crackle around every bit of metal in the room. Bolts of lashing power converge on that thrown body, lighting up for a single brilliant moment before it explodes into a hail of greasy rain.

“Oh,” Scathach says, with a hint of disappointment in her voice, “Not much of a workout at all, was it?” Sighing, she picks up the largest piece – it might be a head, but it's hard to tell after what Nadja did to it – and crushes it in her fist. “Well,” the witch decides, “Now that that's over with...”

With a particularly revolting sucking noise, the scattered fragments of the corruption fly loose from whatever surface they ended up plastered across and reform their original body – or something close to it, at least. The original form was more or less humanoid, albeit in a rough fashion. Although the legs are still close to human shape, the top half is a writhing horror of tendrils that lash out within the tight confines of the pit.

It's a last ditch effort, and it shows. Although the flurry of blows is near impossible to dodge in the small arena, they land with relatively little force. Scathach is able to slap aside the few tendrils that come her way, while Nadja sends them shuddering back with quick jolts of power.

“No way!” she yells as she fries a particularly insistent limb, “No tentacles!”

Minotaur and Kagutsuchi, on the other hand, just hunker down and take the few blows that come their way, the liquid limbs slapping weakly against their thick hides. If anything, the attacks against Kagutsuchi seem to harm the corruption more than it harms the blazing demon, as the tendrils catch fire and wither.

When Scathach grows tired of ducking and weaving, parrying the few blows she needs to, she slips in beneath the corruption's guard – if it can even understand the concept of “guarding” - and delivers a powerful kick to its midsection, tearing the thing in half once more. Another bolt of power from Nadja jumps between the two halves, bursting them both into wet ruin. All that's left, then, is for Minotaur and Kagutsuchi to mop up the mess, burning every little scrap into nothingness.

“That's it,” Scathach calls up to you, “For certain this time!”

And about time too.

When Scathach has leapt from the pit, and your various demons have returned to storage, you gather round Carnby – now restored to what looks like a healthy human being – as his eyes flicker open.

“I feel...” he murmurs as he comes around, “Like I've been dreaming for a long time. I kept waking up and going back to sleep. No, I wasn't sleeping at all, was I?”

“You might as well call it sleep,” Scathach says, with a surprising gentleness, “But it's all over now – you're here to stay, this time.”

“Stay,” Carnby repeats to himself, “Yes, I think I'd like that. I've got a lot to catch up with, a lot that I've missed.” Scanning the room – his eyes, you notice, are clear and bright with intelligence – his gaze falls upon you. “People I need to see,” he remarks, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth, “Ah, you remind me so much of her. My daughter, I mean.”

You get that a lot, you tell him. A thought, then, crosses your mind. He might like to see her, after all this time – and when else might he get this chance? Persuading Scathach to allow a brief diversion, on the other hand, might not be so easy. Then again, you consider, it might be a good idea to hold the “reunion” somewhere outside the kingdom, just in case something goes awry...

“Well then,” Scathach says softly, offering Carnby a concealing robe as he rises, unsteadily, from his throne, “I believe there's someone you should meet. She's been waiting a long time, you know, to see you again.”

“I don't think this is quite the time for that,” Scathach says icily, “But I suppose I owe you this much. Alright, I'm willing to hear what this suggestion might be.”

You should all visit the Hellfire Club first, you tell the pair. After everything that's happened, you imagine that everyone could use a drink. It's neutral ground as well, and more inconspicuous than meeting in the kingdom itself. Keeping things discreet, you add, might be a blessing at this point. That's not all either, you add after a moment's thought, there's someone else there that Carnby might like to see. His... his daughter.

Carnby's eyes light up as he hears the word, before they are cloaked with a confused glaze. “Amelia?” he asks, “But how? If she's here, that must mean...”

Things, you tell him gently, aren't quite right in the human world. Amelia is here, for the rest of the day at least, to help sort things out. She doesn't know about, well, things, but you're sure that she'd be glad to see him up and about again.

“She'll have so many questions,” Carnby says with a wistful smile, “Yes, we'll do that then,” He turns to Scathach, “We're doing that. I'm sorry, but Titania will have to wait a little longer.”

You'll take the blame, you add as you see the uncomfortable light in Scathach's eyes, if Titania is bothered by the extra wait. It's just, you have no idea when Carnby might be allowed out in public once Titania knows – the queen might wish to keep things secret a while longer – and Amelia doesn't have long before she needs to leave.

“Well,” Scathach claps her hands together, “It looks like I'm outvoted. Very well then – I'll show us to the exit.”
>>
>>45176769

Your exit is as discreet as your entrance was, emerging in a rugged bit of the forest some way away from the palace itself. Carnby is all eyes, gazing around at the trees with a kind of nostalgic wonder. Scathach leads him ahead a little, speaking in a low voice as she explains things – the various events since his “death”, you assume – to him. As they move ahead of you, Elliot approaches. It's strange, you think suddenly, you've never seen him so quiet. If he was out of his depth, you really couldn't blame him.

“So,” he asks as he watches Carnby's back, “I think I could use a bit of background information here.”

It's complicated, you offer apologetically. Carnby, there, is Amelia's father from back when she was human. You guess he stayed in the fairy kingdom after Amelia became God, and he ended up marrying Titania. Meaning, you add, that the fairy queen is actually Amelia's stepmother. The look on Amelia's face when you told her...

“Well,” Elliot says, falling silent for a few moments, “I'm not really sure what to say to that. There's a first time for everything, isn't there? Still, I can well imagine why they might want to see each other. It's a special kind of relationship,” his voice turns strangely wistful here, “Between a father and his daughter, I mean. You know what I'm talking about, right?”

Right, you agree as you slip through the gates into the demon world. The cold air is a shock against your skin, and it takes you a moment to spot Scathach roaming ahead of you. She seems to know where she's going, so you don't need to worry about guiding her there.

You realise, with a jolt, that you've never actually told Carnby your name. The first time you met him, he was... confused, and you weren't sure if your name would have meant anything to him. Now though, he seems to be in fine health. Hurrying ahead, you pat him on the arm to get his attention. Your name, you tell him as he turns to look at you, is Mia Vespucci. Your friend there, you point back to Elliot, is called Elliot Cosgrove.

“Elliot?” Carnby frowns a little, “That's a strange name for a... Wait, did you say Vespucci?”

Vespucci, you confirm, yes. Is that a name he knows?

“Well, I knew a man once with that name,” Carnby scratches his head, “Uh, Marco I believe. You're about the right age to be his...”

His daughter, you finish for him. Well, this is an “interesting” development. Uncertainly, you ask how Carnby knew Marco.

“We... worked together for a while,” Carnby says after a while, “I suppose that's the best way to put it. We didn't really part ways on the best of terms, but things didn't work out so bad in the end.” He gives you an awkward smile, one that you can only return with an equal degree of discomfort. “Small world, isn't it?”

Right, you say as you think of the Minotaur currently in your storage. A small world, indeed. Seeking out safer ground, you ask the first question to flash across your mind – so you've got a demon friend, you begin, and they've started to laugh about their ultimate power lately...

“Ah,” Carnby laughs a little, “They'll do that, you know, if you give them half a reason. I remember once, I went for a walk in the woods and there was this, uh, girl. She kept shouting about her ultimate power as well...”

It really is a small world.

At the Hellfire Club, you immediately see that whatever important meeting Amelia had been involved in has long since finished. She's sitting at the bar, instead, chatting quite freely with Mister Red. In fact, it takes her a moment to turn around at the sound of your entrance. When she does, though, her jaw drops.

“No way,” she mutters as Mister Red makes a discreet exit, “Nope, no way. You're not fooling me, Nyarlathotep, I wasn't born yesterday.”

“Amelia,” Carnby says gently, “It's me. It's really me.”

It's complicated, you chip in, partially just to fill in the silence that descends.

“I suppose divinity runs in the family, now,” Carnby says lightly, testing the waters with a small joke.

“This is...” Amelia shakes her head in amazement, “It's bullshit, but I believe it. I mean, hell, this isn't the weirdest thing that's ever happened to me. Do I get an explanation, or is this just something that... happened?”

You have to wonder what Amelia would say if she knew exactly what Scathach had done to bring her father back, what sacrifices had been made. Then again, you consider, is it really your place to decide that?

“It was all very scientific,” Scathach says smoothly, approaching the bar and waving at Mister Red, “You know how these things are...”

“You,” Amelia says, looking at Scathach with a kind of smile, “Still causing trouble, then? I'm amazed that Titania hasn't thrown you out of the kingdom again.”

“There's still time,” Scathach shoots back, their exchange hinting at a shared history of good humour. “Speaking of Titania, though, I should bring her over here. Assuming, of course, I don't get thrown in the dungeons as soon as I show my face.”

She'll be fine, you tell the witch. From what you heard, at least, they were looking for answers – not a fugitive. As long as she doesn't fly in and start blowing up trees again, you reckon she'll be able to avoid ending up in a jail cell.

“No more explosions,” Scathach agrees, nodding sagely, “A shame, but I think I can restrain myself this time. Now,” she winks at you, “Don't get caught eavesdropping!”

You weren't going to listen in, you lie, you just... you just assumed Titania would want to hear the news from another fairy, that's all!

“Very well,” Scathach winks again, making a move towards the newly repaired door, “I won't be too long!”

Now, you think to yourself as she head off, time to settle in for some eavesdropping. Taking a seat at the bar, you tilt your head towards the father and daughter pair as listen to what they're saying. It's not prying, you decide, because they're making no attempt to keep their conversation private. They talk openly, as loud as they like.

“So,” Carnby begins, “How's the world doing? I understand things are little, uh, bad there.”

“Things are fine,” Amelia lies, shifting uncomfortably on her seat, “Not perfect, I mean, but they're getting along without too many disasters.”

“I see,” there is a note of doubt in Carnby's voice, “And Cassandra, how is she doing? You're still friends, I assume?”

You swear you can see a sheen of sweat forming on Amelia's forehead. “Cassandra is fine,” she croaks, her eyes flickering nervously back and forth, “We, you know, we do our own things half the time. She's grown up to be a fine, independently minded young woman.”

Independently minded – well that's one way of putting it.

“And what about, uh...” there is a pause here as Carnby searches for the right name, “Uh, your other friends?”

“Petra is...” Amelia trails off, and you desperately pray for her to say anything other than “fine” again. “She's had a hard time lately,” Amelia concludes with something approaching a smile, “But I think she's over the worst of it.”

This has to be one of the most painful conversations you've ever witnessed, with both parties struggling to reach a common ground. No, it's not quite like that – it's almost as if they've been apart too long. There are too many big issues between them that need discussed for them to be able to talk about the small stuff freely. What they need, you think with a guilty rush, is some time alone. As quietly as possible, you get up from your stool and move to the opposite end of the bar from the pair.

“Quite right,” Mister Red, appearing silently, says to you, “They need time, that's all. Things are going to get quite busy later, if my guess is correct. A royal visit, is it?”

Unofficially, you reply, it's sort of a secret. You could call it a family reunion, you suppose.

“Is that so,” the hulking bartender says neutrally, “Well then, I won't argue for a lack of publicity. I've grown quite used to the quiet around here, and I'd rather not have every rowdy fairy under the full moon making themselves at home here. The mess alone, I fear, would take until the next full moon to clean up.”

Murmuring a non-committal reply, you turn at the sound of a door banging. Scathach must have made good time, because she has returned already – and she's not alone. Walking a few paces behind the witch, shrouded in a cloak of luxurious fur and velvet, is a tall figure that could only be Titania. Brushing the hood back from her calm, still face, Titania surveys the interior of the Hellfire Club. It's a minuscule gesture, but you're certain she nods to Mister Red as she does so.
>>
>>45178043

When Titania's gaze meets Amelia – and Amelia looks back – you feel the temperature in the room drop a few degrees. A wince passes across Amelia's face, almost too fast for you to catch it, and an equally quick smile graces Titania's face at the same moment. Then what little emotion was there drops from Titania's face as she realises who Amelia was talking to. Her lips part wordlessly, her eyes growing a fraction wider as she almost takes a step backwards.

From what you know of the queen, that little slip was the equal to a howling tantrum or a fit of weeping. You can't really blame her – you'd be just as surprised, if Marco suddenly rose from the dead.

“Scathach,” Titania says at last, her voice dry, “Explain this.”

“Well,” Scathach swallows nervously, “It's your husband. He's back.”

“Of course,” the queen's voice wavers slightly, but it doesn't rise above her quiet tone, “I see that. Could you explain, perhaps, how this has happened?”

You could interrupt here, you realise, and save everyone a lot of trouble. Assuming, of course, you can think of something good to say.

It was the divine fragment, you blurt out, the one that fell near the fairy kingdom. It ended up in Scathach's hands and she studied its power. You let her hold onto it for a while, you add, while you were getting the others. What Titania is seeing right now, you conclude, is the product of Scathach's research.

“I see,” Titania breathes, glancing across at Scathach, “Then, if I am not mistake, he is... a divine being, now?”

“That's correct,” Scathach is quick to reply, “A god, in the same regard as Cernunnos the hunter. His humanity is behind him now, as are his days of withering and growing old.”

“Then we can be together,” the queen whispers, her gaze fixed upon Carnby's back. He is yet to look around, his attentions still fixed upon Amelia. “But... science and experimentation? The people will not stand for it. Ah, but perhaps they do not need to know. A miracle, that is what they will think when they see him. That is what they MUST think...”

Within the space of a few minutes, you realise, Titania moved from overwhelmed with emotion to busy scheming. Amazing, utterly amazing, and yet there is no way to mistake the genuine love and delight filling her normally cool eyes. All that plotting and scheming, you realise suddenly, is just covering up the raw feelings welling up within her. Is she really so desperate, you wonder, to wear such a stoic mask, even at a time like this?

Lowering her head, Titania clears her throat. It's a tiny sound, but enough to draw Carnby's attention. Turning in his seat Carnby's face lights up with a brilliant happiness at the sight of Titania – practically the oppose of the queen's cautiously composed reaction.

“Now then,” Scathach whispers to you, “A moment of privacy is in order, I believe.”

Yes, you whisper back to Scathach, you should definitely leave them to it. The words are barely out of your mouth before you're moving into the corridors, quite content with not knowing where you'll end up – anywhere, you believe, would be safer than here. As you're leaving, you glance back over your shoulder at the curious “family”. Carnby and Titania are silent, merely staring into each others' eyes and holding hands. Amelia, meanwhile, is lurking awkwardly a few paces away.

“Save me,” she mouths as you glance her way. Merely shrugging in reply – really, what can you do to help? - you slink into the winding corridors and allow the club itself to vanish from sight. At the first junction, you split up with Scathach – you could use a break from her, to be honest – and walk on alone. Your wanderings take you to a single door, rather than the usual rows of bedrooms. Curious, you let yourself in. At first, you take the room for being empty and then you see her – Cassandra, sitting quietly in the corner with a notebook in her hands.

“Mia,” she says, without looking up, “You should knock. I could have been doing anything in here.”

Apologising, you close the door behind you and sit next to her, leaning back against the wall. Cassandra just shrugs, allowing your intrusion, and goes back to making notes. Crossing things out, writing them in again, crossing more things out... Like watching Mister Black polish glasses, there's something hypnotic about it.

“Can I help you?” she asks, eventually, a faint note of irritation in her voice.

Titania's here, you say simply, but she's with Carnby at the moment. It's kind of a long story, you add a moment later.

“I'll bet,” Cassandra says, “Wait, did you say “Carnby”? I... oh, why not? You know, if there's one thing about this life that I don't like so much, it's that you lose the ability to be surprised. Logically, I should be amazed by this, but...” Falling silent, she shrugs heavily, “Magic, I suppose. Or reincarnation, or something like that. So, is that why you're here?”

Got it in one, you admit, you're hiding from the awkward family reunion through there.

“Oh, Amelia is there too? And they've not killed each other yet?” Cassandra finally looks up from her notebook and raises a delicate eyebrow, “I was wrong – I am surprised.”

You laugh aloud at that, the sound surprising you with how it blurts out of you. So, you ask when you can straighten your face, what's that she's writing?

“Religious stuff,” she replies vaguely, “Commandments, I suppose you could call them. Mostly, though, it all comes down to “be polite” and “don't be horrible.” I wonder if I'm missing the point somewhat.” Tapping her pen against the top of the notebook, Cassandra flips over to a new page. “Oh, but I'm also working out a rough draft of a peace treaty between the fairies and... us, I suppose.”

That's... a good idea, you reply before falling silent. The fact that Cassandra is openly siding with Law is something you can't quite get used to. Hey, you ask after a moment, can you see that dagger she's got?

“Uh...” Cassandra shifts as she pulls the obsidian dagger out of her belt, carefully handing it over, “Don't cut yourself with that. It might... you know, summon the devil or something.”
>>
>>45179211

That's what you wondered about, you say as you turn the weapon over in your hands, you're a little surprised that she hasn't used it yet. You thought she might have been commanding an army of... monsters or Fiends or whatever, already.

“I suppose,” Cassandra shrugs, putting her book away in a pocket, “When I was on my own, it was too much of a risk. I was kind of keeping it as a trump card or something to buy me a little time in an emergency. Now that I've got someone watching my back...” she takes the dagger, gingerly, from your hands, “Well, there's no need for that, is there?”

No, you agree, but she could still use it. Summon a Fiend, and you could beat it up together. It would certainly help pad out her reserves of demons.

“Hmm, is that you offering to help?” Cassandra asks, looking cautiously your way, “Or is this more of a hypothetical “somebody should help” thing.”

Well, you begin, you might-

“Bullshit!” Amelia shouts, her voice switching from muffled to clear as she barrels through the door, “They couldn't even wait for me to finish leaving before they started-” stopping in the middle of her rant, Amelia looks around at the two of you. “Uh... I thought this room was empty.”

She should knock, you tell her quietly, you could have been doing anything.

Minotaur and Cernunnos would probably prefer freedom to working for someone else. Mizuchi might take a little convincing - although the promise to treat him with respect would be enough. >Giving Cass Succubus.
Heh. I wonder if she would have problems with that though she is the closest with Ose, another devil.
>>
>>45179867

While I imagine their personalities would clash somewhat, I never saw Cass as having trouble with using devils these days. She's become quite pragmatic about that kind of thing, largely out of necessity.
>>
>>45179923
So from I gathered in how Amelia responded to Carnby, Cass and Amelia aren't really friends anymore, but aren't at each others throats?
>>
>>45180013

They've agreed to cooperate, knowing that they'll end up going their own separate ways at the end of it. There isn't any real hostility between then any more, but there isn't the same trust there once was. Overall, I think you'd struggle to call them friends these days.
>>
>>45180079
Can't say I blame them, it probably hurt a lot doing what Cass did. Eh Mia will be a better friend. At least I hope so, they'll be spending a lot of time together after all!

And before you mention it, I'm aware Amelia shares a good portion of the blame, but there is a huge difference of intent in what she caused.
>>
>>45180179

I feel, out of the two of them, Cassandra definitely shoulders more of the blame. She might have been desperate, but she should have known better. As much as Amelia screwed up, I can't really defend Cassandra's actions.
Mainly because she was intended as a sort-of antagonist at first.
>>
>>45180245
Its just kind of odd you know?

Back when we were Amelia in London we told her straight up: Killing the Outsider, we have no idea what will happen. The world could decay, stagnate and rot. It could completely end or something new might come out of it.

And she was on board instantly.

But then when it turned out alright, but there were a few fuck ups, bugs in Human Guardianship 1.0 basically, and she's like: "I didn't sign up for this!" its like what the hell lady.
>>
>>45180333

One of the big differences, I see, is that in the first cycle things were already screwed. Taking a risk by going against the Outsider was one thing, but the world was already lost. The fact that the second cycle went wrong because of Amelia's actions - or what Cass sees of Amelia's actions - is what changed things.

The fact that Amelia started things this time by lying and telling Cass that she could prevent the end of the world didn't help, I imagine. That said, Cass overreacted massively, and that's all her fault.
>>
>>45180415
I thought Amelia thought that she could really save the world but at the end she realized 'Oh fuck, Nyarly betrayed me and is causing all of this, we are screwed.'

Or did she know that all along and used saving the world as a pretense to get the people she wanted together?
>>
>>45180487

I believe it was the second option, of the two you listed. That said, I might need to go back and check my notes - I had both ideas when I was writing and I might be getting them mixed up.
>>
>>45180592
Hmm. If its the second option why would she give that vote to lower the barrier to allow Devil Summoning. Had we voted to keep it up like she wanted Marco and Leon would be stuck in the demon world and we would have no way to defend ourselves when Nyarly completely made her move.

Unless she was pretty damn sure we'd lower it and did the vote to make her look good.
>>
>>45180671
>made her
made his*
>>
>>45180671

I think, when I wrote that part, the vote was intended as a test. A way, in other words, for Amelia to get a feeling for Mia's personality. Once the situation became worse, she would have lowered the barrier and allowed demon summoning.

I will confess, though, that I had a pretty major rewrite of certain ideas at one point. There may be some inconsistencies because of that.
>>
>>45180835
I see.

On a lighter note you should totally have Joseph walk in on Titania and Carnby's displays of affection ;)
>>
>>45180914

I suppose it might finally give him the motivation to make his own intentions clear!
Or, you know, he'd just be sick and tired of walking into rooms at the wrong moment.
>>
>>45180914
>>45180835
Bonus points if he and Gabby were talking and they both do it.
>>
>>45180951
Is there anything you can tell us about the pic you posted on twitter on Sunday? It's the quest you're doing next right?
>>
>>45180951
Speaking of possible relationships.

Petra and Amelia ever get some time to talk alone after that confession or are they both dancing around it?

Well, I'm going to assume that by "do it", you mean confess their feelings. In that case, it would certainly be an efficient way to settle that matter!

>>45181057

The rough outline is that the MC is a wandering priest, sent to settle various disputes between towns and their patron gods. I'd hesitate to call it "fantasy" exactly, but it's a lot closer to fantasy than contemporary. I'll post a more comprehensive teaser when this current quest is concluded.

>>45181093

They only had a very brief moment alone, and they very deliberately avoided the issue!
>>
>>45181166
>They only had a very brief moment alone, and they very deliberately avoided the issue!

Nut up you two, You may have eternity together around the corner but live in the now damnit!

But in all seriousness like we might see Amelia again tomorrow if the fight against Dagon goes well and there are no major curveballs.
>>
>>45181221

>Amelia and Petra have eternity together
>Spent the entire time avoiding the issue
The sad thing is, I could see it happen! Really though, I think they'd both be better off having a frank and honest discussion about things.
>>
>>45181221
You KNoW Nyalarhotep or Lucifer are going to show up to try and take the kit and kaboodle.
>>
>>45181337

Now that's just paranoid! When has Lucy been anything other than kind and trustworthy to us?
>>
>>45181481
>Kind

The two times we got info he's been good, but kind? Really Moloch? That's like saying Nyalry isn't suffering sexual.
>>
>>45181534

So maybe Lucifer's been playing up the role of a catty teenager a little too well. Can you really blame them?
For real though, they've got their own plan in the works. Nothing to worry about, I'm sure!
>>
>>45181322
We can't do much on that front as Mia other than what we've done so far, namely the same advice we gave Petra when we first met her: 'Go over there and give Amelia a piece of her mind'

I mean she kind of HAS get used to doing that if she is going to be a good God with us. Mia ain't going to be pulling any punches up there thats for sure. Girl speaks her mind.
>>
>>45181623
>Nothing to worry about, I'm sure!
You know whats funny is that you might not be being sarcastic here, namely he's got too much on his plate getting Chaos back to its former glory to be dealing with us.

Still it'd be prudent to keep our eyes open and when we get all the fragments use them as quickly as possible and get it done.
>>
>>45181811
>Girl speaks her mind.

We can thank Marco for that. He raised her to ask the difficult questions, no matter who she needs to irritate in the process. Amazingly, her teachers don't like her that much!

>>45181866

Of course, you should never let your guard down in a world like this. That said, I do agree - Chaos has got a lot on their plate at the moment, without chasing after a pack of stray humans!
>>
>>45181936
So how relieved is Scathach that she both pulled this off in the first place and Titania is okay with it.
>>
>>45182139

Well, needless to say, she owes Mia quite a lot!
It's probably a good thing that Mia handled some of the talky parts though - Scathach was likely to blurt things out in the worst way possible!
>>
>>45182217
Scathach needs to get out more.
>>
>>45182240

She should probably move out of Titania's basement!
>>
>>45182268
So I got bored and did a thing. People's character arc's at basic level/glance. They seem right?

>Amelia
Loner Troublemaker -> Competent Tomboy Hero -> Barely keeping it together Goddess -> Competent Tomboy Goddess (Once things are stabilized and she gets more grounded again)

>Mia
Sheltered Princess and Corpse -> Sheltered Young Girl -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKf1mL_hgPk -> Demon Slicing Leader of Men

>Cass
Neurotic Bible Fearing Schoolgirl -> Cheerful Neutral Bro and Fairy Lover -> Impulsive, Spiteful Idiot -> Lawfag Revolutionary

>Petra
Amnesiac Blinded Survivor -> Strong Fighter Companion -> Drunken Abandoned Soldier -> Reliable Bodyguard and Friend -> Crippled Warrior -> More than the Warrior -> Best Girl

>Leon
Vengeful Thug -> Demon's Enforcer -> Rage incarnate -> Angry, yet insecure Thug -> Happy Thug and Friend

>Joseph
Manipulated Inquisitor -> Abandoned, Broken Man -> Quiet Doctor -> Wooer of Angel Girls

>Ellie
Crossdressing Conwoman -> Lover of Scotland

>Carnby
Absentminded Professor -> Absentminded Loving Father -> Absentminded Loving Husband and King -> Corpse of Knowledge +2

>Marco
Marco? -> Minotaur? -> Marcotaur!
>>
>>45182338

That all seems pretty accurate to me. Although I do feel obliged to make a joke about
>Petra
>Reliable
It's not her fault though, we can blame bad luck for that!
>>
>>45182464
I guess its reliable more in the sense that she always had Mia's back, even when Mia is playing tag with Archangels on rooftops or breaking into demon fortresses and less about martial prowess.

Fucking Raph and his 96 and the dice teasing me with my 94. Still salty.
>>
>>45182464
>>45182556
But hey, as fucked up as those situations were it did give good character drama and development for her and she seems to be a better person for it. It just sucks it had to be so damn painful.
>>
>>45182556

Well, in that case I can definitely agree - Petra is about as reliable as you can get. She was given a job, after all, and she wasn't going to slack off!

On the bright side, it was a convenient way of tying up a tricky plot thread.

>>45182589

And this is pretty apt as well. I had a lot of fun writing the recovery stuff, and I feel it improved her character for the better.
>>
>>45182637
>On the bright side, it was a convenient way of tying up a tricky plot thread.
not sure if there would be eye repercussions?
>>
>>45182889

I had something planned on that front, but I lost that section of my notes. I have a bad habit of scrawling ideas on bits of paper, and they sometimes go missing. I could have probably fudged something together, but it wouldn't have sat quite right with me.
