It is the Year of our Lord, 1135

You are Mathilde, unwed sister of Lord Wilhelm of Ramla, and haindmaiden to Queen Melisende of Jerusalem. Your brother has sent you to Jerusalem to secure the release of your half-brother, Hugo, arrested for the crime of abducting the Princess of Antioch, Constance.

With you is a body of ten soldiers led by the man-at-arms Bayard. Attending you is Margaret Ui Harra, your friend, and Portia of Antioch, a Levantine-Frank servant.

So far you have been in Jerusalem for half-a-week, awaiting the arrival of your brother Hugo. He was being transported from Damascus under the care of Princess Ioveta, sister to Queen Melisende, and a trial would be convened to judge his guilt. The harshest penalty would be death. Of everything that was the sentence you hoped to prevent.

Your time in Jerusalem has been pleasant, for the most part. You spend most of your time in the royal apartments with the queen, assisting her in the day-to-day matters of state. Watching her receive guests, fetching for her when charters had to be drawn or other parties sent for. Entertaining her son. Occasionally she would give you her new born daughter to cradle. Little Morphia alternated between the most obedient little child to a screaming mess. On such occasions you had no choice but to take her from the halls of power to a private nurse maid for care. Melisende was a devoted mother but a more dutiful queen, and in such matters Jerusalem came first.
>>
It was while returning from a trip to that nursemaid, delivering Morphia into her capable hands, that you heard a hub bub. A gaggle of women, nobles mostly, were gathered around a window peering out. You pause to consider them.

"There he is," one of Hodierna's hanger ons said, pointing.

"Is that his new bride?" another asked.

"A Sicilian girl," came another, "Kind of pretty, for a bastard."

You came close to inquire, and catch a glance out the window yourself. Shaggy haired Count Hugh was dismounting in the courtyard. With him was a mouse-faced olive girl with curly dark hair dressed for travel. Hugh smiled up to her as he helped her dismount. Other nobles were with him. A gathering for court, to judge the guilt of your brother. You felt a cold thrill. The hour of judgement was approaching.

A pinch on your sleeve and you turned to white haired Portia. "News my lady," she said, "Your half-brother comes down the northern road. He'll be here within the hour."

You look back to the courtyard and the nobles below, then back to your smiling handmaid.

Lets try see if we can secure the aid of the nobles who are here.

It's time!

Return to the Queen, if shes not pre-occupied with affairs of state, ask for leave to go greet our brother. Else, stay in the tower.

Protocol is that we do not leave the queen's side unless given express permission, correct?

If we can do this: >>45166266 do it. Else just remain in the tower.

You certainly would 'like' to see your half-brother, but the protocols of court and your new position dictated your path. So instead of rushing off to the stables, you walked the corridors back to Melisende's chambers. You found her dressing, a clinging dress of blue silk, a mantle of blue and gold placed around her shoulders and secured above her breasts with a green emerald brooch, the crown placed upon her brow. She took a scepter in hand. When you came in she looked to you with a smile.

"My vassals arrive," she said, "So my armour must be worn. Silk and jewels. As important as maille."

"My brother has been sighted coming down the north road," you said, "If you do not need me, I thought to go and meet with him."

She walked to the arrow slit window, looked out onto her city. Beckoned you over to stand with her. "Look," she said.

From it you could see over the flat roofs of all Jerusalem, the peaks of churches and holy shrines, the towers at the walls, and the sparse hills beyond. Golgotha, and upon it a small church dedicated to the sight of crucifixion. The road, with travelers heading both to visit that blessed place or making way straight to Jerusalem itself. And beyond them to the horizon. You could not see the party of your brother for all the mess of foot traffic.

You were not sure what Melisende was trying to show you.

"All this," she said, "The seat of Christendom, the heart of the holy."

You looked up at the queen. Trying to read through her Imperial bearing. She drew away, back to a servant who slippered her feet in red moleskin.

"Do as you think decent," she said, "Go see your brother, or remain by my side. It's your decision. I'll not chain you as a hawk to my wrist."

Little bro needs moral support. Matty is probably just as emotionally torn up worrying about her idiot half brother running off and endangering himself.

Besides, the Queen gave us permission.
>>
>>45166615

"Thank you my queen, I shall not tarry long."

Yes there are bigger things in the picture but Koblenz look after our own. And Matty would have likely seen that Wil would has sacrificed all he had built up if it would save Hugo.

Your stations and duties are important but family is family and you stand by family. Some values shouldn't change.

I wonder, does she know you run a quest?
>>
"I shall remain with you my lady," you said with an inclination of your head. The Queen raised your chin with her fingers and smiled.

"Come then, let us greet the high court," she said.

And then of course you realized this would be your formal introduction to the most powerful nobility of the Holy Land. You swallow a lump forming in your throat and suddenly worry that you are underdressed for the occasion, but Melisende does not correct or chide your appearance, so you can only assume it is suitable. She walks ahead and you a step behind. You walk a-step with Hodierna, who regards you civilly but coolly.

You'd had no words with the royal princess since your disastrous dinner engagement. If she held a grudge for your blunt words she had yet to make it public. Still you think Hodierna would never call you 'friend' as a result, no matter what you might do to resolve it.

Baldwin came to walk with his mother, but Hodierna took him in hand, forcing him to remain a step behind. Fulk was not present, but his handsome son Elias was. He smiled to you as he joined the entourage proceeding to the throne room. The man was almost obnoxiously handsome, and though you'd heard his reputation he hadn't made a pest of himself. Indeed of every man present he had behaved most respectful to you, bowing when you past and asking how you were settling in.

No one talked now, it would be improper, but he walked at your side, hands behind his back, every inch a French gentleman.

The throne room had been filled with waiting nobility. A herald called out 'the Queen!' and they all stood or straightened. Knights of the temple orders, counts and minor lords, clergymen were present. They turned their attention upon the queen's party, and more than a few turned eyes upon you, considering you.

Of all present you only recognized Count Hugh, your brother's direct superior. Near him was a tall, handsome man and an old dark one gentleman of refined bearing.
>>
"Walter of Caesarea and Pagan of Oultrejordain," Elias murmurred so only you might hear. He must have read your ignorance. He inclined with his head to another group. An old man in priestly robes with two knights. "Patriarch William and Raymond du Poy, captain of the Knights Hospitaller, with Archamboud of the Templars."

You nodded, a silent thanks for his instruction. The seneschal of the court bid all to sit once Melisende had assumed her throne. Elias departed your side with a slight bow as you took up position on Melisende's left, while Hodierna was on her right. Baldwin was given a stool at her mother's feet. The little boy put on a proud bearing. You saw the Count of Maine take up with Walter of Caesarea. The handsome Levantine whispered in the Frank lord's ear something with caused a chuckle. His eyes soon returned to you however.

"Welcome to Jerusalem my lords," the Queen said, "It is a dire business that calls many of you here. Treason, and abduction. Turmoil in Antioch. Soon comes the prisoners who have created such animosity. You will be their jury. I ask only that you listen to evidence as it is presented, and judge fairly, leave all rivalries and private feuds to one side."

The doors opened again.

First entered a girl little older than yourself, tall, blonde and fresh faced, with large blue eyes and a light way of walking. There was no mistaking her relationship to the queen, her youngest sister Melisende. Next came the thick bellied constable, William Bures, and with him the prisoners. Neither were chained, both were in good garb. Raymond looked about the whole place with an eager grin. This was his second time he'd been brought to trial. Your brother had his eyes downcast.

In William's hands was a young girl, who he settled onto the floor. Dark tanned from days under the sun and wearing cloth borrowed from some Saracen wardrobe, the Princess of Antioch walked hand-in-hand up to the Queen, and knelt before her aunt.
>>
"Raymond of Tripoli and Hugo of Ramla," Ioveta said, "Presented for your judgement and come willingly from the safety of the holdings of Anur of Damascus to do so."

Your heart is a thud-thud-thud in your chest as you look upon your brother, mouth suddenly dry.

"Your trial shall be in a week hence," Melisende said, "In the mean time, you will be held in my dungeons to ensure you do not take flight. Is this acceptable to you?"

"Of course," Raymond said. Hugo only nodded, eyes still downcast.

You keep your mouth shut. Remained silent and watched. The prisoners were led away by a squad of men-at-arms. But that wasn't the end of the proceedings. Walter of Caesarea stepped forward.

"Your highness, I come on behalf of my mother," he said, "To protest her callous treatment at the hands of her husband, Count Hugh of Jaffa. My mother has been disgraced. A high born, gentle woman, set aside for the illegitimate spawn of a Sicilian pirate. I condemn the union of the two, and demand satisfaction for my good mother's honour!"

That set the crowd buzzing. Hugh stood straight, a look of rage upon his face, shouting invectives across the chamber at his former step-son. The girl beside him blanched away in shocked embarrassment. Walter snarled back at Hugh, reaching for his sword. It looked as if blood might be spilled. Walter was restrained only by Elias' hand, while Templars pulled back at stocky Hugh's shoulders.

Bam. Bam. Bam. Three sound knocks of the bottom of Melisende's scepter upon the floor. It cut through the disquiet, returning attention upon her. All eyes open, mouths shut. She stared cold down upon her subjects.

"And what manner of satisfaction is this, a duel? I'll allow no such thing," she said, "If you wish to petition my arbitration of your feud, you could have done so more properly. I am disappointed in you Lord Walter. Such tactics are beneath a man of your station." Then she turned her eyes to Hugh, and they were no less cold. "But you are not wrong. Your mother has been nakedly insulted. We shall confer and discuss in private, and not air family business before all the court."

It pleased neither of the men, but they remained silent. Next stepped for another man, wearing the tabard of Edessa.
>>
"I ask for my lord Joscelin, who guards the north," he said, "About the gathering of troops in Jaffa and Ramla. News travels that there is to be a military expedition against Egypt before the year is out. My master wishes to know why, and under whose authority these troops are gathering. Is this campaign legal, more so is it prudent, and why has there not been an assembly of the high court to discuss it? My lord is left feeling alone and undefended against the true enemy of Christendom, with all our eyes turned south and off the cursed Turks."

Melisende raised a hand. "All will be discussed shortly about our campaign against Egypt. Be assured that this is under my authority, and for the good of the realm. I am happy to discuss such things with any lord who has questions for me. But not at this time."

That set some men giving trouble mutters and dark looks. Though that was all the urgent matter of state, still Melisende had to deal with some other business. Blessings were asked for marriage contracts, and noble lords recently inherited asked her to confirm their charters. All of which she did so with grace and dignity. Once the business was done, she rose from her chair and beckoned you to follow her.

As you approached her quarters a servant took off her mantle, another her crown, as she continued to walk. She handed off her scepter to a page boy and entered her quarters with a great sigh. A seat readied for the private meetings she had discussed. She sank into it, a cup of wine poured.

"If you'd like to go meet your brother you have my leave to do so," she said, taking a sip.

"Thank you my lady," you said with a curtsy. You did not rush away, but you did step a little quickly. You ducked out the door and past scowling Lord Walter who spoke with Count Elias. The count stepped aside for you with a look of knowing humour before you could smash into him yet again. Without stopping you gave him a grateful little dip in acknowledgement, turning round the corner to return to your own quarters.

There you found Maggie fretting over a parcel. Jams and bread, a bit of cheese, some drink. She clicked her fingers as she put it altogether. When she noticed you she crossed over and grabbed your hands. "How'd he look?" she asked, "Was he well, was he beaten?"

You squirmed your hands free and patted Maggie's cheek. "He seemed well enough, if in down spirits," you said, "I'm going to see him forth with. Would you like to accompany me?"

Maggie made the sign of the cross. "God's spirits I would," she said.

You summoned Portia to carry for you both. The common girl did so with a smile, taking Maggie's food parcel as well as a blanket and pillow for his chamber. You heard the dungeons could attract a frightful chill and you wouldn't have him falling ill on your watch.

Before going on you collected Bayard. You knocked upon his door just once before entering, and stopped with a shock. He yawned, mouth stretched open, covered with the back of his hand, but your shock was for the sight of his face without the patch, a deep black pit in his face marred with long knots of scar tissue. It was an ugly large crater that seemed to fill up half his face.

Seeing your shock he turned away to strap on his eyepatch, when he turned back your shock hd settled, but still you looked on him with trouble. It was a funny reason to be so disturbed, and rather vain, but you couldn't help it.

The man-at-arms buckled his sword over his gambeson, "Wait 'til I answer before barging in," he said, flicking at your ear.
>>
Bayard swaggered out, and with your party gathered you went down to the dungeons.

None stopped you, many gave you a berth as you passed.

Once you came upon the dungeons a pair of guards straightened up. They eyed Bayard as if the thought he should be in their cells, and Bayard was equally generous in his regard for them, picking at his eye teeth with a finger nail.

"I'm looking for the cell of Hugo of Ramla," you told them, and they pointed you in the right direction.

You came upon a plain wooden door with a steel barred little window. Looking in you saw a well sized cell, with a palet set down, a chamber pot and a table with water for drinking. Hugo looked up from the corner, a quizzical expression. The guard on the door jingled his keys as he unlocked the door.

"Guests for you," the guard said, pulling the door outward.

Hugo stepped forward.

"Mathilde," he said in clear surprise.

"You really are the biggest fool this side of the Palestine sea," you said, stepping into the chamber. He blanched a little at that. "What on earth possessed you to do something so, so, so monumentally stupid! I swear on Christ this is nearly beyond a disaster! All of Wil's work nearly smashed to bits! You were meant to negotiate trade, not steal children! If it weren't for the fact we love you so we would be better off just letting them hang you!" You felt a strong urge to slap the fool right out of him, but when you raised up the palm of your hand and saw the real pain in his eyes, you felt a tremble in your shoulder.

He looked gaunt, haunted, and scared in a way you never thought to see him.

"God's sake Hugo, you could have been killed," you instead reached out and grabbed him around the shoulders, pulling him into a hug, "Why on earth did you do it?"

"It was the right thing to do," he said, and you felt his arms very awkwardly close around you.

You separated and sniffed. "How on earth is that so?" you asked as he took a seat, hunched forward. The boy was fast becoming a real man in build, the muscle of his arms and shoulders were thickening, his face losing some of that soft look of youth, harder eyes considering the world.

"She's all of eight and was going to be wedded and bedded," he said, his voice had grown more husky too, "How can I do nothing and just let that happen?"

You came and sat beside him, took his hand in both of yours. The rest of your party entered, Maggie and Portia, Bayard taking the door.

"It's not your place to do anything of the sort," you said, "The girl has legal guardians. There are laws."
>>
"If the law isn't just, the law can go hang," he said, eyes tight as he glared at the floor, "God's law comes before all else. Do you remember Christ's words on children? I do. I remember Desmond reading it out. Matthew 18 or something like that. 'But who ever shall harm one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea.' Doing nothing and knowing a child will be hurt, that's as bad as doing the deed yourself."

"You really are a sweet fool," you said, rubbing the back of his hand with your thumb.

Portia added an extra blanket and pillow to Hugo's bedding as Maggie set her package upon the table, unwrapped it. "Ye must be hungry," she said, slicing him a piece of cheese, pouring him some wine.

Hugo shook his head. "No, not particularly," he said. Maggie gave you a look of worry.

Wil's old man and Hermann have seen some shit. Sorta understandable how the uncle turned out. Not that its right. Just more understandable. A terrible weight on the conscious.

If we do take Ascelon, I wonder if we can do that deal like saladin did for the christians he captured in war. A small ransom for the common folk to go free. But I don't think that'll sit well with the war host who will be expecting slaves.
>>
Does Maggie know the story with our Reverse Trap?

"Eat," you said, taking a chunk of sausage and forcing it into his hands, "Don't be a fussy child."

He grudgingly took a bite, chewed and gave a hard swallow. You forced him to drink as well.

"Tell me what happened," you said. He gave you a side look from behind his wine cup, wiped his mouth. He looked to your companions, working crumbs from his teeth with his tongue.

"We got word there was a man from France coming to wed Princess Alice..." he started. He went through the whole thing, as near as you could tell, beginning with their arrival in Tripoli. He spoke about Pons' fears and Raymond's plan. Mentioned a brawl with a Varangian that left his arm broken. Meeting the so-called 'co-emperor' of the Romans. Their flight into the wilderness with Constance in hand. Their fight with bounty hunters on the Dasmascene road.

Then he arrived at Damascus itself.

"It's a beautiful city," he said, "Thick yellow stone walls and high domed buildings. The streets were lined with palms giving us shade. It was orderly, peaceful, not what I'd have thought from a Muslim place. And it had quarters for Christians in it. That surprised me a little. No one seemed bothered by us or our appearance. Even the lord of Damascus accepted us warmly. An old man named Anur. Long white beard and this comically large turban. I thought he might tip over backwards it was so big. And he had three wives, can you believe it? An old woman and two younger ones. One of them was even a Christian. He gave us quarters but told us straight away he would need to send word to the Queen. He likes her a great deal I think."

He stopped to drink.
>>
"We were in Damascus for a little while. Anur gave us the freedom of the city. Raymond spent most of it in the Christian quarters. I spent a lot of it resting. My arm healed up. When I was strong enough Anur's son taught me how to ride a camel, and one of his daughters took me to see a juggler that spun fire between his fingers. It was good, better than we could have hoped for. When Ioveta arrived I almost didn't want to leave. Anur even offered to find me a position in his household."

"You turning Moslem on us?" Maggie asked.

He snorted, shook his head. "Never," he said, "But they sure have some interesting things."

"I'm glad you got some rest," you said, patting his arm. Hugo started into an apple. He'd found his appetite at last.

He wiped juice from his chin. "What about you?" he asked, "How are things back home?"

"Well," you started, sitting up with a proud little smile, "While you were playing games up and down the coast, I was foiling an Assassin plot against our brother."

"Bullshit," Hugo said, then followed it with a "Seriously?" and leaned forward to listen.

"Serious indeed!" you said, "I risked my very life in combat to bring the Assassin to justice. With Bayard here and Sabeen as well we fought and killed two of them, and caught the traitor in our midst."

"Solomon had a bit to do with that too," Bayard cut in. You gave him an irritated look, while the man-at-arm's just thumbed his eye patch.

"Anyway, it was by chance I discovered our brother's seneschal going to the yard one night..." you went into detail about your adventure, maybe going light on some of the more emotionally complicated parts involving Viyan. "We made a trap for them, and when we rushed the door fighting broke out. Bayard and Sabeen were both wounded-"

"Is she okay?" Hugo asked.

You paused to blink at him. "She's fine," you said, "Now, as I said. Sabeen and Bayard were both badly hurt, bleeding out on the ground, and with sword in hand I alone defended them both from Assassin killers, buying time for Solomon and his men to arrive." You mimed sword strikes, making chopping and clanging noises as you did. "They came upon our fight and helped me finish it. Luckily we caught Rosalie and put her on trial. Burned her of course, it was naked treason. Unfortunately the snake himself, Nabil, escaped."

"Is all that true?" Hugo asked Maggie and Bayard.

Bayard nodded. "Just about everyone word, even the last bit. I'm only alive because of your sister." Gave you a grin.

You felt a little blush at that. Hugo gave you a surprised but proud look.

"It was nothing," you said, "I was only doing my duty. Of course, brother was very grateful when he returned, and that's why he has entrusted me with securing your freedom."
>>
"Do you think you can?" he asked, a nervous look in his eye, "Do you think you can get me out of here?" His voice seemed to have a tremble to it. His eyes turned your pride into an uncomfortable squirm.

"Of course I can," you said with a smug little smile, "It will be no effort at all. I have the ear of the queen, and she's very well disposed towards you already. Why the whole thing is more for show."

He gave you a look of deep skepticism, but then nodded.

"Thanks Matty," he said.

You got up and he gave you a hug this time, a quick one but more natural. You squeezed him back.

He showed you to the door.

"Be careful," he said.

"You most certainly don't have to worry about me," you said as you left, flashing him your best smile.

"We'll keep her safe," Maggie said, pecking Hugo on the cheek.

Hugo grabbed Bayard's arm before he could follow you out. The two shared a look, some silent masculine thing passing between them. Bayard nodded and Hugo released him, settling back into his room.

The guard locked the door behind you. You spared Hugo a last glance before hurrying on, feet feeling light on the steps. You truly felt as if you could do it. Win Hugo his freedom. Once you were back at your quarters a servant bid you to see Melisende.

"She's a need of you," he said, leading you to your liege.

Melisende was standing by her window again, considering her city. She did not smile for you when you entered.

"I wanted your thoughts," she said, "On this business between Walter and Hugh. I think we might be able to settle this thing between them, but it would only be a brief respite before they start quarreling again. Hugh had the annulment done with all legality. But Walter is a powerful, popular man, brother to Lord Sidon. Refusing him this may alienate him further from my throne, and he is far from my friend already. Speak freely."

This.

>>
>>45170127
we had nothing to do with it though, not to mention Jaffa can be easily secured by Wilhelm as Hugh has no heirs to dispute it and roger has already pledged his support regardless of Hugh

I'd say just let them duel it out to first blood if Walter is not satisfied with Hugh paying back the bride price.
>>
>>45170055
> side with Walter and say a trial by combat is fair

Legal or not an insult is an insult. Something like this will need to be sorted by their bullheadedness.

Putting a payment on hugh's wife will just insult the both of them so the fight is the only way.

However, rule that the fight should only be to the first blood.
>>
>>45170283
Then money shouldnt even be involved. Honor demands blood. Let them have it out with practice weapons and let them brawl.

So if Walter wins the duel he gets money?
>>
>>45170055
Welp.

Walter isn't going to help with Ascalon no matter how you cut it.

Hugh is a guaranteed assist with Ascalon.

I'd rule in favour of Hugh so we can get Ascalon settled.

Better yet, delay and settle the matter in 6-8 months time.
>>

>>
>>45170523
>ups my hand slipped and i killed him by mistake
>ups someone gave Walter a real sword by mistake
>>
"If this is a question of honour you should let the men fight," you said, "Walter has every reason to be offended, and satisfaction should be made. To the first blood at least. No need to be so barbaric and have a man bleed to death upon the floor."

Melisende looked to you with a firm line of her mouth.

"Well, it's a thought at least," she said, looking back out to the city.

She was quite for a time.

"The best course of action would be to have Hugh repay the dowry. A fight is too risky, even to first blood they can still prove lethal, and I'll not throw my court into disarray on the eve of a war. The impact it will have on the army...petty jealous will take hold. If Hugh wins it won't just Walter that will feel slighted, his mother could draw Lord Gerard into the business. If Walter wins, Hugh maybe disgruntled enough to withdraw support for Ascalon or demand some concession of leadership - if he is not wounded or killed making it all the more a headache to sort out. Money is the best option. It alleviates some of Caesarae's resentment and does no lasting injury to Hugh. When we march we must be united in spirit and cause, and the struggle of war may settle their ill will towards one another more favourably than a beat up contest between them could."

It was a rather blunt lesson in politics, and you took it in. Of course her decision wouldn't turn on the words of a thirteen year old girl, she had just been testing you, seeing where your mind lay and assessing more of your character and ability.

You felt as if you may have failed this test.

Melisende offered you a chair.

"There's nothing I can do to satisfy Edessa except cancel the invasion and march my troops north," she said, "I wonder who prompted Edessa to speak. It does not strike me as the way Joscelin normally does business and seems done only to undermine our plans." She took a sip of her wine.

"My queen has enemies," you said, "My brother too."
>>
Melisende threw out her hand. "If only they were all in Saracen lands, and not skulking in my court," she said. To that you could only agree.

Your day was done and you retired back to your own quarters. As you walked you felt a pressure on your back, as if someone was watching you. Or following you.

A hand came upon your shoulder and you turned to throw a fist.

Elias dipped back on the spot, your knuckles only hitting the air. His hand released you.

"Forgive the surprise, I'd called to you but you must not have heard my voice," he said.

"And what is so urgent you'd grab a woman for the world to see?" you demanded. He rubbed the bridge of his nose, a slight smile beginning to tug the corners of his mouth.

"I thought we could talk, on matters personal and political," he said.

"Me, talk to you alone, with your reputation?" you said, raising your brows. His smile was devilish but not unappealing. "The world might think the worst."

"The world can go hang," he said, "But if it makes you comfortable you can bring someone with you. Whom ever you like."

Bayard came down that moment, whistling a jig. Where ever he had been you meant to have a word with him, and you mislike the flush on his face and merry step in his stride. He saw you standing with Elias and his scarred brow furrowed, though he kept whistling until he was with you.

"And what's this?" he asked.

"No fear good man," Elias said, "Your mistress is safe." He clapped the man-at-arm's on the shoulder and looked back to you. "Come by my quarters later so we might talk. Trust me, it is important."

You watched him leave, his broad back round the corner. Bayard looked like a hound dog held by the leash kept from attacking a stray cat. Or in this case, a leopard.

"You can't meet with that man," he said, "He's a viper."

"And who are you to tell me what I can and can not do?" you asked, flicking his ear, "You're my bodyguard, not my father."

Bayard rolled his eye. "Fine, as you say my lady, whatever you wish," he said.

You grinned and bopped him on the nose.

"There's a good man," you said, and started to Elias' chambers.

You do not know exactly what Elias wished to speak with you about, but you were here to gain allies for your brother as well as to secure Hugo's release. It was possible Elias could help you with that. When you came to his quarters you found him waiting. He dismissed his own guards and servants, bid you sit at a low table, with fruit and wine. He poured a cup for you.

Bayard took up by the door, arms crossed and eye on the Count.

"From my holdings in Maine," Elias said as he poured a cup.

You crossed your legs and your hands. "Personal and politics you said, which is it?" you asked.

He held up his cup. "Why there's nothing more personal than politics," he said, "Please, have a drink with me. Eat."

Laws of hospitality dictated you must. You took a sip of wine and a bite of apricot. The wine really was lovely.

"Your brother is in a danger your other brother once occupied," he said, "The men of your family really do have a habit of getting themselves into trouble, and out of it too. When last it happened I sided with the wrong people, more out of emotion than clear thinking. My father had a game he was playing."

"And this time you mean to side the other way?" you asked, taking another sip.
>>
He leaned back, spreading out his chest, slouching into his chair. "Mayhap," he said, "Though Hugo is not the orator his brother is. I know him you know. We fought side by side against a band of Turks. He impressed me with his valour. No doubt the boy is a talented warrior, but his gifts end there. I on the other hand, have a more gifted tongue."

He took a bite from an apple.

"And you'd argue for my brother in return for...what exactly?" you asked.

He took a sip. "A kiss," he replied with a boyish grin, "Just a kiss."

Bayard started forward with surprise.

You considered Elias. He considered you.

"Very well," you said, uncrossing your arms, setting down your wine cup.

Bayard started forward. "Matty, you can't be serious!" he said.

"I'm deadly serious," you replied, "Bayard, kiss the man."

Elias was in mid-sip when you said it, and he near choked on his drink. But his choking soon turned to honest laughter, and he slapped the table top.

He looked to your scarred protector with a twinkle in his eye. "Come on then good man, your mistress has given you an order," he said, patting his knee.

Bayard looked to you and then to him. He took a breath and stepped forward.

"Stop!" you said with a raised hand, "Bayard, really. Do you think I'd embarrass you like that?"

You looked back to Elias, whose grin was still wide. He refilled his wine cup, and offered to refill yours. You gave him a slight nod. Took the cup.

"Of course I'd want more than a kiss," he said, "Even from one so handsome." He toasted Bayard with that and your man grimaced. He looked back to you. "I have brought some men with me, and mean to join your brother's attack on Ascalon. Relive the days of past glory and earn some absolution for my earthly sins in the name of Christ. I ask only that my father is given the same honour, and hope you will petition your brother to sanction it. Melisende keeps a tight rein on him, I fear it is slow killing his spirit."

"Parental concern is all that moves you?" you asked.

"It is a prime motivator, yes," he said, "But maybe you know that Maine is the least of Anjou pocessions. I hope to add land in Sinai to my name, so that I might stand more equal to my elder brothers. A few well done deeds in the name of Christ would earn me esteem as well." He was being rather candid, you think he was also being sincere.

You sip your wine slow, playing out what scenarios your imagination could conjure. There was a danger here, you knew that, but you also knew Elias had the ear of every noble that disliked the queen, and with him on your side Hugo was guaranteed his freedom. Of course, you could only say you would try to help him, there was nothing that bound Wilhelm's word to yours. You judged it at last a safe risk to take.

"Very well," you said, "I'll argue on your behalf if you do the same for me, but be warned that I am just a gentle girl with little say in things."

"Oh, I think you can be very persuasive when you have a mind for it," Elias said, "I can tell you're the type that wants to be more than what others would make you, and you have the intelligence and drive to see it through. I think you will be a rather dangerous woman in time."

"Only in time?" you replied, "What makes you think I'm not so dangerous now?"

"Well," he mused, swirling his drink, "If you were truly dangerous you would have come alone, and used my male weakness against me."

"You think the only way a woman is dangerous is with what's between her legs?" you nearly laughed, "You flatter yourself."

He shrugged to that and downed the last of his wine. "It's ever for a man to underestimate a woman," he said, "You have me on that last. I'll concede that point."

"Was there anything else?" you asked as you rose from your chair.

"That girl in your service," he said, "She's a spy, and not for Antioch."

You turned your head. "Portia?" you asked.

He nodded. "She has a Roman master," he said.

"Why tell me this," you asked as you drew up straight.

He shrugged. "Consider it a gift," he replied. He held up the last of his wine bottle, still near half full, to Bayard. "Here good man, something to make up for our jests. Drink it in good health."

Bayard took it with a slight nod, and he shadowed you out of the room. This Elias was turning out to be a stranger man than you had first assumed.

"I don't like him," Bayard said once you were closer to your own chambers. You looked up at him, Bayard all grim faced and scowling. "You shouldn't trust him."

"Oh I don't," you replied as you came to your quarters. You looked back to Bayard. "What don't you trust about him, his ambitions, or his intentions towards me?"

Bayard gave a visible squirm. "Can't it be both?" he asked.

"Did my brother order you to guard my chastity as well?" you asked. Bayard's blush told you he had. "So then, do you care about my chastity because my brother ordered you to care, or because you care?"

Bayard threw up his hand. "What difference does it make?" he asked.

You sighed, rolled your eyes. "It's all the difference in the world," you said as you slipped into your room, "Good night Bayard."

You heard him give a frustrated grunt as your door closed, "Good night my lady."

You decide to see Fulk, accepting his invitation to archery. You'd never had cause to use a bow before, but you fgured it a chance to get a better view on the one-time-king.

It was an open garden, with a target set on one side. Fulk had his attendants, the knight Sir Charles and some others, but he kept them at a distance as he took up a yew bow and arrow shafts. If his invitation had been for conversation he made little of it as he drew back the drawstring and loosed arrow after arrow into the distant target, each one hitting the padded mound of hay with an audible 'thump'. He wore a sleeveless tunic, and you saw the ripple of muscle at play as he drew back the bow. It must take great strength, you could only guess at the poundage but knew you'd never be able to draw such a thing.

When at last he was done he gave a huff of breath, wiped sweat from his beard and took a drink of water. Then he turned finally to face you.

"I wondered if you would come," he said, slinging the bow over his shoulder, "You've become a favourite of my wife. She talks about you."

"The two of you talk?" you asked.

He gave a slight grin. "On occasion, in passing," such a self-deprecating joke you hadn't expected from the man. Wil always made Fulk seem a brute.

He took a seat upon the rail of the garden fence. "I have a fondness for your brother," he said, "I wanted to tell you that personally. Even if you hadn't spoken with my son, I've prayed for Hugo's deliverance anyway. He's a good lad. Honest. There's not enough of them here."

"Well you are very welcome," you said, "Was that all?"

He grinned. "I was hoping you'd say that," he had a second bow, much less large. He handed it to you and you took it up in imitation of the archers you had seen in the past. "Make a claw of your hand," he said, "Take the bow as such. Side on." He turned your shoulders gently and you took a swallow of a slight lump in your throat. You drew back the string. It resisted more than you thought it would, forcing your arm to strain. He gently adjusted the elbow of your draw hand.

You had no arrow notched, but still he gently turned your head, hand behind your ear, as if you were sighting down the length of one to the distant target.

"And, loose!" he said into your ear, the breath of him stiring the small hairs of your neck.

You let the bowstring snap forward, all the tension flung forward. The bow near came from your hands and you let out a held breath with it.

"Not bad," he said, "Next try with an arrow." He took up a shaft. Handed it to you. You brushed your fingers across its feathered end, looked over the shap point. You set it to the drawstring, and took the bow up again the way he had showed you.

"Arrow on the other side," he corrected your mistake, adjusting the arrow.

You sight along the arrow shaft, draw back on the bowstring, your arm tight, the string taut, the bow curving further inward. And you loose. The shaft flies out but falls just short, thumping into the dirt. You can't help but give an irritated pout and blow at the strand of hair that had fallen across your face.

Fulk smiled though. "Others have done worse their first time," he said. "In fact I'd argue you did quite well." He offered you a cup of water and you drank.

"I know you have little reason to trust me," Fulk said, "But I'd like to ask you a favour. My son is having his birthday soon and I'd hoped to purchase a hawk for him. You've a falconer in your company. I'd hoped you could make the purchase for me in the city."

"If you'd like," you said, though you wren't sure why he was asking you of all people to do so.

"Only when you have the time," he said, "His birthday is not until after the trial. Baldwin will appreciate it. He's fond of you too."

"He's a fine little boy," you said. It made Fulk smile to hear it. "Was there anything else my lord?"

He looked you over.

"When next you see my wife, tell her I'd enjoy her company for dinner," he said, and then he stood up to dismiss you.

Bayard waited for you outside and you walked together to the royal chambers. Your brother's trial was on the morrow.

"Do you think I've done enough?" you asked him, "To keep him safe, alive?"

He stopped to consider it. "Far as I can tell you've done a fair job," he said, "It all comes down to what you'll say tomorrow."

That made you fidget nervously, playing with the brooch you wore. You'd done little of that, thinking on just what you'd say on your brother's behalf.

Headcanon: it's completely in character for Mathilde to want the royal marriage to be a happy one. She's not pleased with her own parents, and even held that against Hugo. Her response to Melisende's dilemma earlier also advocated in Walter's favor on the duel also shows that she holds marriage as a very sacred thing. Mathilde is not Wilhelm, and will only seek to support his ambition when it agrees with her. Marital strife is something that does not agree with her.
>>
>>45172321
That's Hugo's line though

>>45172334
all the kids want marriage to work or don't want shit to do with it [like Hugo]
>>
>>45172334

Heck, even Wil acknowledge it would be a good thing for the royal couple to reconcile.

It was exactly what he recommended the queen do.
>>
>>45172344
Would Hugo's kids get the surname Bastardson?
>>
"I'll be retiring to my quarters," you said, "Don't let anyone intrude."

"As you wish," he said, holding the door for you as you swished inside.

You sat at your desk and pondered what you might say. Ran through the arguments in your head. It might be that this was a trial won already, but you couldn't shake the feeling some great upset might take place. You took out quill and parchment, readied some ink, and set to writing out a few of your thoughts. A knock came on your door.

Maggie entered with supper, placed it beside you.

"Don't burn your eyes out workin'," she said, kissing your cheek. You gave a grunt in reply, your attention on your parchment. The hours worked by and soon you had parchment littering your floor, notations scratched out, crumpled up. It was an expensive period of frustration. And you were no master advocate with a deep knowledge of the law.

But you tried, hammering your brain apart with argument and counter-argument until your eyes fogged and a yawn ripped from your mouth. Dinner left cold and uneaten, you started to slump in your chair and wondered if you could make it to your bed.

The door cracked open and Maggie crept in again.

"Bed for you I think," she said, and your slurred agreement was barely vocalized least of all words. She helped you up and over to the bed, slipping you beneath the sheets. "Don't you fret now," she said, "all will be well."

You murmur something in reply but your head is already lolling to the side and your eyes fluttering close. Very quickly sleep had taken you, and the rest was nothing until morning.

Damn. Thanks for the thread. HF. Really enjoy Mathilde in Jerusalem, got some interesting character interaction going.

Do Elias actually seem to like or rather "enjoy" Mathilde or is it really all just a game ?

You guys messed up with Walter and Hugh's thing. Picked the literal worst option in Melisende's eyes.

You also could have had Hugo released to the Ramlan quarters with no problem and boosted your leadership stat as a result.

Other than that no major problems.

Oh well, marriage is serious business.

>which roll did you use to Introduce Elias?
That random d100 hit a 60, which triggered Elias.
>the hell is the ''hit the center'' system?
50 is the centre. Closest to 50 is a hit, with adjustable bonuses one way or the other.
>thoughts on Wilhelm agitating Walter to kill Hugh?
I'm not going to tell you guys what you can and can't do.

>>45172397

But aren't they in Ramla? That would be even worse than allowing Pons to discipline Raymond, it would delay Hugo's trial by weeks.
>>
>>45172397
>You guys messed up with Walter and Hugh's thing. Picked the literal worst option in Melisende's eyes.

So what does she think? That we still have things to learn I guess?

And about Hugo released to the Ramlan quarters, thats new. Thought we might be asking abit too much at the start.

No, not Wilhelm's, Mathilde's. You're still listing Giselle as our companion, unless you mean to have that as a surprise here.
>>
>>45172397

Perhaps we should have explained our reasoning then. Still, more things to learn.

Kinda a shame we didnt run into Iovetta. Was there any chance we could HF ?
>>
>>45172492
Yes, there was an obvious one. It was when we asked to leave the Queen's side to go meet our brother. Are you thicker than "Where are the Ramlan Quarters?" Anon?

I don't want to influence you guys too much in your theories/plans. I only ruled against the Cairo invasion and Peasant Uprisings because they were completely impossible. You could conceivably do this. Whether or not its a good or bad thing isn't something I feel I should comment on. It's up to you guys to discuss its pros and cons.

>>45172505
No need to insult people anon.
>>
>>45172505
We have quarters in Ramla, a dilemma was raised about Raymond being dealt with in Triploli, I figured it would be even worse for us if Hugo had his trial separate from Raymond.
>>
>>45172526

A quarter is a place in the city where the folks tend to congregate and stay.
>>
>>45172524
Hey HF, what bonuses can we get if we follow >>45172526's logic? We're new in this city, after all.

>>45172524
well okay then, related question then, what is common understanding of Jaffas inheritance if Hugh dies?
>>
>>45172524
>I don't want to influence you guys too much in your theories/plans
So does that mean we'll never get any strategists?
>>
>>45172551
It would be in dispute, but the major claimant is his sister Aines and whoever her husband might be if she's married.

>>45172555
No? I mean, you'd have to ask any strategist characters for their opinions in thread for it to come up.
>>
>>45172566
like say Etienne or his constable?

would such a match even be possible?
could Wil just march in and take it in the name of stability?
>>
>>45172566
Can you inform us which lords will be present at the trial ?
>>
>>45172592
>like say Etienne or his constable?
Yeah, sure.
>could Wil just march in and take it in the name of stability?
The Queen could, Wil couldn't. He'd have ever other Jaffa vassal on his arse as an usurper, and rightfully so.
>>
>>45172603
I'll list 'em next thread.

>>45172535

>>>45172535

because we are the loyal vassal of Jerusalem
