The clouds up above are beginning to take on a subtly lighter shade of scarlet, the first gasps of a new day creeping across the sky. It’s all red, of course, just like it’s been for weeks now, but it there are different shades, different textures. The tiny artifact in your hand is red, too, looking almost like a streak of fresh, hot blood as you twiddle it idly between your fingers.

Laura walks slightly ahead of you, her bright green eyes staring down at the pavement as it rolls by.

Picking up the pace, you walk beside Laura, watching her in silence. Her breath flows through her in long, measured heaves. Her steps are terse and direct, and would probably appear confident to anyone else. Her eyes are gone, though, somewhere entirely else, staring more inward than outward. It takes her a minute or two to pick up on your attention, glancing your way with a halting, intentionally blank stare. You know the difference between regularly inscrutable and intentionally opaque by now.

You’re quiet most of the way back, the three of you making your way home in silence.

There are only a few light sleepers still awake when you get back into the station, the three of you having to maneuver your way by a bunch of thickly-blanketed slumberers as you way your way past the mouth of the platform. A radio sits by the cooling remains of a fire, still churning out music.

“Hey.” You whisper down to Laura, taking her hand in yours, knotting your scaled digits around her dainty fingers.

You sway experimentally, moving with the quiet rhythm of the radio, her smile growing as you grasp her other hand. She moves awkwardly at first, fumbling her feet around, and you’re not really all that much better, no amount of agility making up for a fatal lack of funk. But you find your rhythm as the music rises, your breath mingling in the cool, quiet air, your forms flickering through and between one another like tongues of flame.

Laura laughs, quietly, almost shamefully, and you laugh with her, and you dance for what seems like hours.

There have always been anti-druid people. But, I made a very persuasive argument a few threads ago. Basically we know that it's a matter of time before the Sentinels come in to clean up the scar. Our evacuation plan is:

Leaving your jacket draped across Laura’s prone form, you make your way out. You need a little fresh air, and you may as well make yourself somewhat useful while you do it.

You channel some of that lingering rage through you as you make your way up the steps to the world outside, sending searing arcs of metabolic fire through your shoulders, your flesh twisting outward unnaturally as new, light weaves of bone tear their way free, a broad pair of wings eventually unfurling. You don’t feel like flying, you just don’t really feel like hiding, either.

The whine in the back of your skull warbles upward as you emerge into the daylight.

You wander for a bit, checking the edges of the Scar, occasionally waving to a few disparate groups of hobos and scavengers picking their way through the ruins. You’re not sure that they’re even all mutants anymore. Most of these guys look pretty normal.

Huginn and Muninn settle on your shoulders, cawing their talk of small shiny things into your ears.

You step out over a length of cracked pavement, onto the grass beginning to grow from the stretches of bare earth that trail in random intervals through the Scar, and feel an almost tactile shock pass through you, the sensation of your feet and their plodding weight coursing up through your head, as though you can feel through the grass beneath you.
