You are Takashi Wakui, a sixteen year old Japanese high school student. In your world, half of humanity possesses a Persona—the corporeal manifestation of one’s personality as a supernatural entity. You had been an unlucky ordinary at first, lacking the potential to summon your Persona. Then the application AETHER was forcibly installed on your smartphone. It sucked you into the nightmarish realm of the Blackened Void, where you fought monsters and awakened your Persona in the process.

You are now the Wild Card of the 22nd Century. You possess the Fool Arcana, giving you the power to draw strength from bonds and wield multiple Personas at once. Already this places you in great danger, as the Fool Arcana is seen as an impossibility by the common masses. Revealing your newfound power to the common world would immediately land your head on a dissection table. To make matters worse, you and several others have been cursed as the Void’s Chosen, fated to traverse the wastelands of the Blackened Void until the end of the game. For what purpose does AETHER exist, what mysteries lie within and how is victory achieved?

[7:30 pm, 20-May-2129 (FRIDAY)]

In a deserted hallway, the walls colored a pale bleach and the floor layered with the type of cheap carpet found in wholesale stores, you stare at an LCD keypad. You have not-so-fond memories of this keypad, one of which involved you forgetting the combination and ending up having to call your mother in the middle of her work. Boy, did she give you an earful about it when she got home.

Now, you are an adolescent. You have the mental capabilities to remember ten scrambled numbers in a row. You were so proud when you successfully entered the code for the first time, to the point where you took a chocolate bar out of the pantry in celebration. So relying on muscle memory alone, you punch in the code, the LCD buttons flashing blue and emitting shrills beeps. The door unlocks with a satisfying click, one that you’ve heard thousands of times. With a tired yawn, you step into your apartment and place your dirty trainers next to Shizuka’s thick, black boots.

“I’m back…”

“Welcome home, Takashi!” Shizuka calls from the kitchen. The sounds of a steak being lacerated into neat slices by a meat cleaver are thumping through the air. You yawn a second time and head straight for the fridge to grab a bottle of orange juice. “How was your day?”

You pause halfway through pouring juice into a small plastic cup. Where to start, nee-san? How do you adequately explain all the bullshit that happened today without revealing anything about AETHER or Fumika’s illegal activities? First Celeste got herself and two other lady friends into her class, sparking off a miniature war within the class president and a self-proclaimed albino fiancée. Then you and the rest of the Void’s Chosen headed into a foggy forest located inside another world to fight Shadows and gain sweet loot. If you told Shizuka you had engaged combat with a Minotaur Shadow, she’d have a big enough aneurysm to make her heart explode. Then she’d lock you in the house and never, ever let you out.

“Eh, it was alright.” You end up saying.

“Oh, that’s good.” She goes back to chopping.

You take a sip of your juice and are reminded about the Mysterious Flask, as the game named it, Celeste found in the Hazebound Woodlands. The team had returned to the safehouse right after beating the Minotaur Alpha and debated on what to do with the flask. It looked too important to be a piece of junk, what with the intricate runes carved on the sides, but at the same time you couldn’t find any discernable purpose to it. That included using it as a drinking bottle—plastic ones were infinitely better. In the end, you dumped it in the storage room, nestled between the High-Cut Armor and the Drone Repair Kit.

“The notification hasn’t been cleared.” Fumika had observed as the team lined up to go back into the real world, “Neither have we received Macca or Build EXP as a reward. The quest is not over.”

Your orange-haired best friend would no doubt be excited to return to the Hazebound Woodlands. It is ‘her’ Sector, after all. That, and she’s the type of girl who enjoys adventure.

As for the rewards for beating the Minotaur Alpha…

“Dinner’s ready!” Shizuka’s sing-song voice snaps you out of your memories. “I was out shopping this afternoon and bought you a surprise, Takashi. Come and get it.”

“Are…are those croissants?”

“Yes, they are. The bakery was having a sale. It was too good to pass up.”

You stare at her. “You are the best nee-san to ever grace this Shadow-ridden Earth.”

“Don’t forget to eat your vegetables too.” She responds, already heaping spinach onto her plate. You quickly remind her that you are a big boy now and can fully well take care of your greens. Spinach isn’t exactly gross to you, but why eat that when there’s delicious bread available?

You take a bite into a steaming croissant and feel the taste melt in your mouth. It’s truly experiences like these that make life worth living, especially for a condemned soul such as you. Also on the list: listening to good music, punching Shadows in the face until their heads explode, hanging out with your friends (Celeste in particular) and chocolate-chip ice-cream.

The two of you do the customary ‘thank you’ and begin to eat. In no time, the dining room is filled with the sounds of cutlery clinking and food sliding through teeth. Fried beef has been served and Shizuka devours it like a hungry tiger. You eat a bit of rice for variety and wash it down with the fish soup. Your sister’s cooking is delicious, as usual. Every bite takes away a chunk of stress from today’s classes and Blackened Void exploration and it feels absolutely wonderful.

“So, anything happen at school lately?” Shizuka asks, halfway through her meal.

“Not much.” You muffle the words through a mouthful of cheese and bacon goodness. This is the third one tonight. “A new transfer student arrived at our class. A European girl. Veleis-sensei made her sit next to me.”

“Really? What’s she like?”

“She’s quiet and doesn’t seem to speak Japanese well.” You mutter. “Her speech is all fragmented and stuff. It’s honestly a bit weird, but she doesn’t seem like a bad person.”

“Do you think the two of you could become friends?”

“Maybe? I haven’t really talked much to her. ” You shrug your shoulders. “Then again, I thought the same about Celeste the first time I met her and she’s now my friend in the same class as me…”

“Celeste, the nice girl from a floor above?” Shizuka questions. “She’s in your class? Didn’t you tell me she was in a different one?”

You freeze. “Uh, well, she was supposed to be in my class from the start, but the school made a mistake and they decided to correct it.”

“Two months down the line?” Shizuka now looks suspicious and a little disappointed. “That’s horribly slow. Where exactly are those school fees going towards?”

You opt not to comment and resume eating. Sometime later, when most of the dishes have been reduced to scraps and bones, Shizuka takes out her tablet and opens a page on the browser. You sneak a look and find that it’s a website for recipes.

“Takashi, have you ever been interested in cooking before?”

“I did when I was eight and nearly set our kitchen on fire. Kaa-san yelled at me, remember?”

“Oh yeah.” You older sister gives you a sheepish grin. “Um, you’re a lot older and smarter now, so it should be fine.”

“Why do you want me to start cooking anyway?”

“I just thought you might find some fun in it. Besides, there are times where I have to leave home for more than a few days, right? Knowing how to cook will save yourself from eating those unhealthy pre-packaged meals all day.”

“They aren’t that bad.” You point out.

Shizuka shakes her head. “They’re full of preservatives and hormones. Homecooked meals are healthier. It’s for your own good!”

“Uh-huh…” You say, unconvinced.

“Anyway, I’m not forcing you to do this. Think of it as a hobby. Give it a try and you might find it to be really fun.” She smiles, proud. “I know I did.”

“…I’ll think about it.”

>>Takashi: Cook something.

You remember the first time you tried to cook food, and you wish you didn’t. Burnt carbon choking the air. A frying pan charred black. The fire alarm shrieking like a thousand banshees trapped in a melting nuclear reactor. A child, that is to say you, trying to heave up a fire extinguisher and dropping it on the kitchen floor.

Your memories of your youth are a bit hazy, but you’re pretty sure you had nightmares about the incident for weeks. From that day forth, the only cooking you did was inserting instant noodles packages into boiling water.

“Well, it couldn’t hurt to try…” You mutter to yourself as you stepped into the kitchen. “I mean, my life is already mad enough. Why stop there?”

You let out a bitter laugh and enter the kitchen. Right, what exactly can you cook that won’t result in a makeshift Agilao spell? You take out your smartphone and navigate to the website Shizuka gave you earlier.

“Let’s see…how to fry an egg…”

This sounds simple enough. Heat oil or butter in a pan, crack the egg onto it, cook for thirty seconds or so. It’s so straightforward you could recite the recipe from memory. The ratings say as much. 5 stars, rated E for EASY.

And yet, as you find yourself staring at the ingredients laid out the kitchen bench, you can’t help gulp and feel the noticeable tension lodged in your stomach.

Here goes nothing, you think to yourself, and reach out for the eggs.

You successfully fry the egg. Several of them, in fact. The frying pan is coated in white and yellowy protein deliciousness. You turn off the heat and slide them onto a plate. Then you grab chopsticks and stick one of the eggs into your mouth.

Afterwards, you study for a bit and go to sleep.

[8:00 am, 21-May-2129 (SATURDAY)]

It’s another fine morning. You smile to yourself a little as you walk to school. At the front gates, you spot someone whom you haven’t seen in a while. A girl of average-height, with flowing crimson hair tied into twintails. She’s doing her utmost to play it cool, but there’s an aura of noticeable exhaustion radiating off her.

“Good morning, senpai.” You greet her, a little cautiously.

“Oh, morning.” Yoshio Sagisawa, turning to you with bags underneath her eyes. She yawns, covering her mouth with a delicate hand. “Forgive me, I haven’t been sleeping well lately.”

“I can tell.” You mutter. “House work keeping you up?”

“Not that, but also end of semester exams…” Yoshino moans, resisting the urge to slouch like a delinquent from the Grey Ward.

“What?” You say, blinking. “Those don’t start until end of the July.”

“I’m the House Captain,” Yoshino responds, “So I can’t let everyone down. I have to study hard, it’s my duty…”

“Senpai…”

“The end of semester exams are brutal. You’re a second-year, right? You need to be Smart in order to stand a decent chance against them…” She yawns again and smacks her lips. “Sorry, I’ll be going ahead now. I hope the vending machines haven’t run out of canned coffee…”

“Remember, kids, apostrophes are used in English to indicate possession. They are never used to make a word plural, even when a word is in number form such as date…”

You decide to listen in class today. Celeste is looking bored, which is to be expected. Next to you, Aria is scribbing down notes with fervor, a look of panic on her normally placid features. It’s a little mean, but you feel comforted knowing that someone is even worse at English than you.

“To indicate something belonging to one person, the apostrophe goes before the ‘s’. For example, ‘The boy’s car.’ To indicate something belonging to multiple persons, the apostrophe goes after the ‘s’. Such as ‘the boys’ car’. Do you understand?”

Aria pauses, frowns, then starts writing like crazy again.

“Apostrophes are also used to indicated a contracted word, such as ‘don’t’ or ‘haven’t’…”

AFFINITIES: Nulls Light, Weak to Darkness

-Eight of the nine order of angels, their duty is to humans and deliver messages. They are at constant war with the fallen angels.
-An assault-class Persona. Cleave does physical damage. Holy Arrow does gun/piercing damage with a chance to charm the foe, thus temporarily bending it to the summoner’s will.

Principality.
It's got a party heal to start, a debuff, some strong magic and hama. We do have some physical attackers and a stronger healer is good.

We still have arch angle, but it won't get any mroe development. Which is fine, since they both have C development. There is no point in not taking him.

You pick the card you desire. It spins around it the air, the glows cobalt. The space in front of you is suddenly displaced by a man with golden wings, green robes and wielding a cross-tipped staff. He looks down at you, solemn.

“I am Principality.” The angel booms, nodding once. “Let us walk down this path of strife together…”

Principality fades into the card, which you stick into your pocket. The power of the Justice Arcana is flowing within you. Kaz Inaba’s sense of duty and rationality is making your Persona stronger…

>Principality’s AGILITY has increased to E+! Learned Mahama! Learned Sukunda!

Then you leave the Velvet Room and head out the school gates for the familiar portal to the great nothingness…

Archangel might be able to evolve into those same angels. But if it can't, I have to agree that it wouldn't work. Gale Slash is flat better at physical damage, and we're severely lacking in magic-oriented personas.

“What’s on the menu today, Takashi-kun?” Celeste asks.

Fumika clears her throat. “If I may make a suggestion, I feel it would be prudent to explore Area 019 or the Forlorn Abyss.”

“You’re just saying that because Area 019 is the sector we found you in.” Celeste sticks her tongue out.

“Partially yes, but also because I wish to scavenge the area for technology and supplies.” Fumika responds, calm as usual. “Furthermore, the Shadows there appear more powerful than the ones in the Hazebound Woodlands, which would mean more experience for us as a whole.”

“I get that.” Akikazu grunts. “But why the Forlorn Abyss? That’s the lowest priority mission we’ve got. Why the hell should we bother.”

“Information from the Observer's mouth.” Fumika says. “I feel as if the minimal priority is a trap set by the game. It wants us to ignore it, so we fail to discover what’s inside of it. Optional locations like those tend to rare treasures or powerful monsters. They also have time limits set on them.”

“We don’t know that for sure.” You pitch in. “What you just said is speculation…again. The Observer said nothing about a time limit on the Abyss's Acts.”

“True.” Fumika agrees. “Nevertheless, I hope you take my words into account. In the end, it’s up to you, Leader.”

“Well, I feel we should explore the Hazebound Woodlands, so that we can gain a new Companion!” Celeste puffs up her cheeks and folds her arms. She seems a tad displeased.

“Wonder what that damn knight in Pyre Ruin Valley is dong…” Akikazu grumbles from his spot against the safehouse living room wall.

What’s your decision?

We can't. Takashi is the only one that can enter the Data Rooms, anyone else who tries dies. We can let her come up with a list of questions before we enter, though. In fact, we should be using this time right now to decide on what we're going to ask. So, thread, what are the most pertinent questions? “Let’s go to the Forlorn Abyss.” You state. “I want to know what’s down there.”

And what the hell the Observer is talking about, you privately add.

“Understood.” Fumika nods.

“Hmm, alright then.” Celeste says.

“Ready when you are, Takashi.” Akikazu is already heaving up his sledgehammer and heading towards the exit.

You lead the team down the abandoned streets to the underground tunnel. The set of stairs are as steep as you remember, a stone intented slope into a yawning maw. You lead the team down it, grabbing the rails as tight as you can, lest you fall and break every single bone in your body. After minutes of tentative treading, the team reaches the dark room at the bottom.

“That is where you met the Observer, correct?” Fumika says, stepping across to peer down the hallway. “Is there anything of use down there?”

“Nothing, unless you like damaged computer parts.” You mutter.

There is a metal door in front of you. Past it is the entrance to the Forlorn Abyss. A shiver crawls down your spine. There’s something very off about what’s behind that door. It reminds you of being half-trapped in a nightmare, caught between reality and fantasy without any way to separate the two. You take a deep breath and try to not let your nerves get the better of you. You are the Leader, after all, and it is your responsibility to lead your fellow Players towards victory.

“Let’s go.” You state. You grasp the handles of the door and fling them wide open. A mass of white light is displayed in front of you. Shutting your eyes, you enter the whiteness. You hear your friends following…

>Act 1: Outset

You step into what appears to be a labyrinth. The walls are colored a dull brown, lined with wooden torches at various points. The air is warm, yet smelling of old mortar. In front of you are entrances leading down twisting passages and narrow corridors. The team moves towards the center of a large entrance hall, weapons at the ready.

“Huh, I sort of expected more.” Akikazu mutters, scratching the back of his head. “You guys were hyping it up to be some sort of death maze of pain and shit.”

“Eh, I don’t think we ever did that.” Celeste grins. “Maybe it was just you, Akikazu?”

“Quiet, guys!” You hiss. “Something is approaching.”

“Too true.” Fumika confirms, Moros already out. “Quite a lot of somethings, I see…”

You slip on your knucledusters.

A deep voice, disjoined and foul, is coming from a dark corner of the room.

“yOOOoooUUUU…”

Your heart is pounding. What is this feeling?

“hhhHHUUUMmmaaaannsss….” It croaks.

What Fumika sensed has stepped into the light. Your eyes widen. The creature is unlike any Shadow you’ve ever seen, even in books and websites. At first, it appears to be a hovering ball of gas. That alone wouldn’t be unusual, but there is a mask of absolute agony etched into the creature’s upper body. It expands and shrinks as it moves and the face stretches into expressions of sorrow, rage and hatred in the span of a second.

“gggIIIvvvEEE mmmEEE... ggiIIVVVEEE MMMEEEE…” the creature shrieks, and you notice that a few more of the same have spawned directly behind it.

“What?” You can’t help but gasp.

“ggggIIIvvvEEE mEEEE yoouRRR ssssOOOuuuLLLsssSS!”

Before you can react, the monster has leapt forward and attached itself to your face. Your vision is obscured by crimson, sickly orange and pain.

It is suffocating. The monster, whatever it is, is clawing at your eyeballs and tongue with invisible claws. You can’t even scream. Your vision is growing dark. But it is not enough to end you outright. Gritting your teeth, you switch to Principality and cast Hama. Glowing sigils surround you, obscured by the blood red body of the monster. They explode with holy radiance and the monster shrieks. The air around you purified within seconds and you stumble forward, gasping for breath.

“Are you alright, Takashi-kun?” Celeste rushes to your side, palms coated in a comforting jade aura. “Here, Dia!”

She presses her hand against your cheek and the damage is healed. You thank her, then growl and stomp forward with Principality by your side.

“Five enemies remaining, everyone!” Fumika calls, firing her laser pistol at one of the monsters. “They have us surrounded. Although, they appear weak to light.”

“Then we’ll just have to crush them all.” Akikazu spits, summoning Ubelluris.

The team is fired up and ready. You with your holy light, Celeste with her fire, Akikazu with his brute strength and Fumika with her laser pistol. The strange gaseous monsters hesitate, almost as if they are contemplating whether or not assaulting four humans, two of which possess their counters, is a good idea. Then they all scream at once and rush forward.

The monsters are no match for Principality and Sati’s Hama spells. They are burnt to ashes almost immediately, their dying screeches echoing around the claustrophic room.

>Obtained 5000 Macca.
>Gained 5.00 C. EXP.

“Well, that was something.” Celeste says to nobody in particular. “Wow, the Observer wasn’t kidding when he said there weren’t any Shadows here…”

“We should keep moving.” You say. “The faster we move, the less chances we have of weird face-hugging ghosts surrounding us.”

“Good thinking.” Fumika commends before you guide the team down the center path.

It quickly becomes apparent that the labyrinth is full of monsters. Not just wisps of gas with faces, but also blobs of sludge with eyes and poisonous birds. They speak, slurring their words as they attack you with earth, physical and fire. It reminds you very much of a stereotypical JRPG dungeon, which is certainly a change of pace as the monsters shrivel up and leave money and treasures behind as they die.

>Obtained 7000 Macca.
>Gained 6.00 C. EXP.

And yet, you can’t help but feel a touch of dead. You can’t put your finger on it, the answer is on the tip of your tongue and so forth. Maybe it’s because of the way the monsters speak of souls and the devouring of such. The soul is a mysterious entity and humanity still doesn’t fully understand it, even after eighty years of research. Personas stem from the soul, but can the soul be manipulated? Is it possible to change one's Arcana, even to the Fool? What happens when a being is born without a soul? Is that even a possibility? These questions swim around you mind as you set a ball of slime aflame.

Or perhaps it’s because these monsters are sentient creatures unlike anything seen on Earth. They’re comparable to Shadows in the sense they want to kill you, but they actually have primitive intelligence. It begs the question of whether or not smarter, tougher enemies lie ahead and this thought does not comfort you in the slightest.

You later run into a single treasure chest in a small room. The walls in the room are unlike any other ones in the labyrinth. They are colored a deep purple. Shadows dance across the walls, guided by the flickers of the torch flames.

“Fumika, can you take a closer look at this?” To your surprise, she shakes her head.

“I can’t scan this.” Fumika’s voice is the closest you’ve ever heard her growl. “This room is emitting some sort of interference. Moros cannot do anything.”

“I wouldn’t open that if I were you.” Akikazu tightens his finger on his sledgehammer. “That thing…it just ain’t right.”

>>Takashi: Poke the chest with a stick.

There are no trees down here.

>>Fine. Takashi: Throw rocks at the chest.

You do that. You pick up a piece of shattered brick and hurl it at the chest. It bounces off harmlessly. Nothing happens. You pick up another piece and repeat the same process.

“Ooh, good idea.” Celeste joins in, then Akikazu. Before long, a hailstone of rock and stone are cascading down on the wooden chest. The chest refuses to budge. Then a brick, tossed by Akikazu, smashes into the lock.

The reaction is instant. The chest’s upper half springs open and a spindly body grows out from the bottom. Twitching legs, stick-like arms. Sharp teeth coated with dried blood snap and a long, fleshy tongue extends from the insides of the chest. The monster lunges forward, gnashing rapidly at the air on fours.

Then it stops, as if only just noticing you, then risesup to its full height. It’s easily over six feet tall, stretching to the ceiling.

“A mimic.” Fumika intones.

It jumps and leads next to you, leg outstretched for a devastating roundhouse kick.

“Ippon-Datara!”

You guard with your main Persona in the nick of time. The mimic’s foot crashes into Ippon-Datara’s iron hammer, knocking you backwards into a wall. It hurts, of course, but at least your neck isn’t being chewed into beef jerky.

“Fire!” You hear Celeste cry. There is no time to comment on the likelihood of a pun. Before the mimic can stand up and no doubt do something nefarious, like bash you on the side of the head with the chest, a volley of magic blasts into it. Fire, wind, earth and lasers smash into it like electrons in a particle collider. It is shoved against the back, the spells drilling into its torso. Half a minute passes, at which a laser pierces through its chest, destroying the heart. It gives an anguished cry, before crumbling into dust.

>RING OF REMEDY: A worn ring with a magenta crystal. Protects against poison and sickness. Prevention is said to the best cure, but this is not always available. In such situations, rings like these can be almost invaluable.

“Good work everyone.” You say.

“That was close.” Akikazu replies. “Heh, nice one Leader.”

“Yeah!” Celeste smiles. “Come on, it’s not over yet. Let’s keep going!”

“So such creatures exist inside the Forlorn Abyss…” Fumika murmurs. “We will have to watch out for them in the future, perhaps even in the Blackened Void as well.”

>>
>>45146373
yes, but with magic and augmentation it makes future leveling easier and allow us to better handle the combat grounds. this is probably the closest we will get to a just made it level. Mind you, if we face another fight before we leave then by all means we can wait. But we definetly should level Magic up soon.
>>
>>45146373
I say we wait for 100% overflow to see what happens. We also need to keep track of the various amounts of C.Exp we need to level up per stage.
If the amount we need to level up next always increases the same amount, regardless of overflow, it might be more beneficial to go for the overflow bonus in the earlier levels, then get the level ups as we increase in levels.

Exploration of Act 1 continues. You soon discover that there are dangers in the Forlorn Abyss outside of monsters. Spike traps, hidden walls, poison floors and fake doors are all present. You manage to bypass them all, but not without a few scrapes and wounds. Principality’s Media comes in handy in those situations, but you notice it eats up mana like nobody’s business.

“See, Takashi-kun?” Celeste waggles her finger in front of you with utter smugness. “This is why you should eat more sweets!”

“And risk diabetes?” You retort. “Sorry Celeste, but I rather not spend my life drinking insulin through a straw.”

“Hey, not to crash into your little conversation, but we’re kinda being attacked by slime monsters right now!” Akikazu shouts. “Hurry the fuck up!”

Eventually, the team reaches the deepest part of Act 1. A long corridor leading towards a gate, lit by dozens of torches. The team walks slowly down, each footstep seemingly heavier than the first. You reach the end and see a mass of whiteness is blocking the way, thick and dense as a regular brick wall. Out of curiosity, you chuck a stone at it. It passes through and disappears. You don’t hear it land.

“Something powerful is lurking behind this…fog.” Fumika says, retracting Moros into its card. “We should only proceed if we are ready…”

“I think we can take it.” Akikazu grins, looking like a shark at this very moment. “Ready when you are, Takashi.”

You pause and think.

Except we don't know how quickly we can get that right now. People refuse the battlegrounds because our magic is low and aug as well, so we lose a means for exp. >>Akikazu: Summon Laurence.

He grips the Old Pendant tightly in his palm. A ring of light, decorated with intricate runes, appears in front of him. From it Knight Laurence is summoned, bathed in the white light that all white phantoms in AETHER possess.

“Hello, friends.” He announces in a raspy voice, looking back and forth between the team. “It’s been a while.”

“Nice to see you, Laurence.” Celeste greets. “We kind of need your help at the moment. There’s a monster past this fog and we need to beat it.”

“Say no more.” Laurence unsheathes his sword, clenching it with both hands. “I said I would assist you, and here I am.”

“Seems like you can only maintain this form for about five minutes.” Fumika notes. “We should hurry, then.”

“Then away we go.” You grunt, placing a hand on the fog. It melts away at your touch, in the same way a block of stone would press into a wad of rubber. You push at it harder. With a strange, hollow sound, the fog gives way and you enter. Your friends and Laurence follow close behind.

You emerge into a large empty space. The layout is similar to the rest of the dungeon, (torches, labyrinth walls, dull interior design and whatnot). However, there is a circular pattern carved into the center of the floor. It’s inviting you to stand in the middle, like the grounds of a historical coliseum. You take a step forward.

You stop.

“What the…”

Your heart begins to beat out of your chest. A awful bloodlust seeps into the air. Your blood is congealing into an icy slush. You outstretch your hand to warn your team to halt before they can sliced into pieces by this unknown foe.

A dark mass bursts out from the arena. Wisps of dark crimson and black fly outwards. The ground rumbles. The urge to fall to your knees is powerful.

Oh no.

No no no no.

Sweat trickles down the side of your head. The bloodlust intensifies. A figure rises out of the ground, covered head to toe in a dreadful red aura. The darkness to the Laurence’s light. Black hood, black outfit, black trousers. The figure steps forward, the very air around him twisting into a malevolent shape.

No, this is wrong.

This is very, very wrong. Whoever this person this, he shouldn’t exist. You can’t explain why; you simply know.

You take a deep breath. Your fellow Players are watching. This is no time to be inflicted with fear. You have to stand tall. Face down the enemy with all your strength and all that. Otherwise, you find yourself short of all your limbs!

>NPC dark spirit Rogue Shinobi has invaded!

“Battle time, everyone!” You shout, partially to steady your pounding heart. “Get ready—”

The Rogue Shinobi slams his palms together and works through a series of hand signs. A cloud of smoke bursts free. When it clears, three figures are standing where the lone one used to be. A man with dual blades, a fat lout with a gigantic hammer and a slender woman with a blowgun and some of those gas wisps with faces next to her.

“Looks like it’s three on three.” Fumika observes. “As for me, I will hide in the corner and provide support. Of course, with this many enemies, it won’t be easy…”

“Celeste, take the fatty!” You command. “Run circles around him and burn him up! Akikazu, take on the dual katanas guy with Laurence. I’ll take on the woman with those monsters.”

“Be careful!” Celeste shouts as she runs towards her target. You see her sidestep the incoming hammer blow and send forth a blast of fire.

“I’ll trust you, so this better not fuck me up!” Akikazu roars and lunges towards his target, Laurence following him with sword outstretched.

You face your target, slipping on the Ring of Remedy as you do. The woman, dressed in the same garb as her companions, smiles cruelly, her readying herself to fire a dart. Her minions swarm around her, chanting and howling words you cannot begin to describe.

“Principality!”

The angel appears, ready to cast holy light.

The Mahama spell misses completely. It’s not your fault. It’s because a bunch of those monsters decided your torso was attractive to them as candy would be towards little children. They dogpile on you, tearing into your flesh. Their moans are like blaring air sirens on the night of a raid. You would scream, but one of them has covered your mouth. You can barely make out the woman firing a toxin dart into your legs. The poison takes effect almost immediately, mitigated somewhat by the Ring of Remedy.
