The very next morning, Kaito awakens alongside Mileena. He gives her a kiss before proceeding to breakfast. He discovers Cinder in the breakfast hall, having come up from the Dragon Wing. "So, what's next, captain?" he asks as he lights his meal on fire, charring it before digging in. Apparently he likes his meat extremely well-done.

"I've still got a few things to do," Kaito says. He shakes his head, trying to clear it from the haze of his visit to Turana and the confusion emotions it stirred within him. "I can free the shard of Wind..."

"That'd make mother happy," Cinder says, referring to Fire. "Another free sister, another step closer to purifying Decay and reunifying with her other selves."

"I should probably check in with Yanake and see how she's doing with the warriors I left behind as well," Kaito adds. "Maybe they've found the assassins."

As he eats, he also considers two places he has yet to visit in Outworld; King Duroc's court and Kotal Kahn's court.

Kaito decides that he will make for Outworld once more, to Yanake's lands. He asks Mileena if she wants to go, knowing what happened last time. "I'll be on my guard," she says. "If Turana attempts something again, we'll know if we can trust her or not."

Kaito would like to believe that she would not try, but still agrees with her being cautious.

They head back down to the crew and they are glad to see Mileena once more, up and well. As they welcome their captain back, Kaito looks out at the water and spies a curious sight on one of the nearby small outcroppings of land near a waterfall; the blind orc they left behind not too long ago, who desired to wander Edenia. He appears to be sitting calmly alongside the waterfall and meditating.

Kaito uses the Staff of Raiden to bring the boat over to the orc and calls down to him. "Hey! How are you doing?"

He doesn't move, but speaks. "It is peaceful here."

"Sorry to break the peace, but I never got your name... Or anything about you, really."

"My name is Rordren, and I am a monk from the realm of Xaa."

"I can't say I've ever heard of it. What is Xaa?" Kaito asks. "And why were you the prisoner of those pirates, if you don't mind my asking?"

"Xaa is the home of the orcs. Some of us live in peace, while others live in perpetual war. I am of the former, and was captured by the latter."

"Well, I'm glad I could end up helping you," Kaito tells him. "Do you want to go home? Do you have family, or friends?"

"I have no need to return; I have no attachments there. I am a member of an ancient order of blind warriors. It does not originate in my home realm; its membership stretches across all realms."

Kaito straightens a bit. "Really? Have you ever heard of a man named Takahashi Kenshi?"

"Have you?" the orc asks. "He is one of us."

"So you do know him!" Kaito says. "That's amazing! He's been my friend since childhood. I've been hoping to find him for some time now---do you know where he is?"

"Kenshi is on a dark quest," Rordren says. "He seeks the ones who killed his wife. Our order has agreed to help him where we can, but if you seek his current whereabouts, you must obtain them from our order's master."

"Well then, where can I find him?" Kaito asks.

"Within the city of Z'unkahrah in Outworld, where Kotal Kahn reigns, search for a blind beggar. Say to him, 'Sight Without Sight, Darkness With Light.' He will take you to our order's master."

Kaito says it a few times to himself. "Alright, thank you. Would you like to come along?"

"I enjoy it here," he says. "Thank you."

Kaito nods and proceeds to the bow of the ship, excited at the prospect of finding Kenshi once more. But first, to Yanake's lands.

Kaito brings the boat to Outworld, and once more they anchor it offshore and he makes for the city of Xun-Koto, with Mileena, Cinder and Vapor. As Kaito rows, he notices that Vapor seems to be intentionally avoiding eye contact with him. That's a bit concerning; she has become privy to quite a bit of personal information regarding him lately. He resolves to have a talk with her later.

Once within the city limits, Kaito considers what to do next.

Kaito and his companions head straight for the palace. Once within, they reach the throne room and discover Lady Yanake conversing with Scorpion. They both turn their attention to Kaito as he enters and Yanake smiles. "Kaito! You've cured Princess Mileena!" She goes to hold both of their hands. "This is wonderful news," she says.

Scorpion walks up. "We were just discussing taking a morning walk," he says. "It has been some time since Lady Yanake has left the palace. We are expecting some old friends to show up."

Kaito immediately understands the hidden meaning of his words. "Perhaps I could join you," he says to her. "Where might this walk be going?"

"We thought it best to simply go where it strikes Yanake's fancy," Scorpion replies. "After all, there is some fun in unpredictability."

Kaito nods and turns to Mileena and Cinder. "Perhaps this walk is more suited to a smaller number of people," he suggests.

Mileena immediately nods, but leans in close. "I'll be watching from afar," she says. She departs.

"I have no idea what any of you are talking about," Cinder says.

Kaito leans forward and whispers. "Just stay out of the sight until the assassins show up, and try not the burn down the town."

"No promises," Cinder replies. "But I'll try."

Kaito walks alongside Yanake, with Hanzo on the other side, as they leave the palace.

Kaito elects to remain silent, allowing Yanake to speak.

"I knew you would find a way to cure Mileena," she says. "That's what you do. And I can't tell you how wonderful the company has been. Master Hasashi is a wonderful gentlemen."

"I have also enjoyed my time here," Hanzo admits. "Lady Yanake and her people are an inspiration in this land of Outworld."

As they walk, Yanake continues. "I am proud of the work my people have done in the city of Xun-Koto. We have turned it into a flourishing capital for this region. I often forget how beautiful it has become..." She pauses near a flower bed to pick and smell some flowers.

Kaito and Hanzo share a look and dart their eyes around, looking for any sign of danger while trying to act natural. Yanake rises once more and hands a small flower to Kaito and Hanzo with a smile.

They both politely smell them; Kaito has to admit, it is rather pleasant.

"I am glad you both are getting along well," Kaito says. "It's always a joy to have friends meet friends."

Yanake resumes walking through the gardens, with Scorpion and Kaito walking behind.

Kaito steps forward a bit. "You know, I can't help but notice a parallel between yourself and Master Hasashi," he says, drawing curious glances from both. "You raised this city from the ashes and made it into something new and glorious, much like he did with his clan. Isn' t that right, Hanzo?"

Scorpion clears his throat. "Yes, I suppose that is something we both share."

"That's fascinating," Yanake says, looking to Hanzo. "You never mentioned that your clan was rebuilt."

Hanzo shoots a neutral glance towards Kaito, who realizes that this may actually be a bit of a touchy subject.

"It's true that once, the Shirai Ryu were all but destroyed and I was it's only... survivor," he says, putting a strange emphasis on his choice of words. Kaito looks away. "But I have made strides towards building my clan anew and dedicating it to the protection of Earthrealm, such as the peace we have made with those who were once our most hated rivals, the Lin Kuei."

"That is very inspiring as well," Yanake compliments him. Kaito knows there's a considerable amount of detail left out of that story... but perhaps it's best not to bring all of that up at this time. "I would very much like to hear more of this sometime, Master Hasashi."

He is about to speak when suddenly he stops. He whips around and throws out a hand, launching a kunai at the end of a chain. Kaito turns just in time to see the spiked head impact against an arrow flying through the air, one that was aimed straight at Yanake.

"GET DOWN!" Scorpion shouts in a commanding, fiery voice. Yanake immediately starts looking for shelter, but they are in the middle of the gardens. She spies a stone bench and drops to the ground to crawl underneath it.

Kaito looks up to a rooftop where Scorpion also is staring. Figures appear atop it, clad entirely in black. They draw swords and other weapons.

"Ninja ambush!" Kaito shouts as the ninjas leap down to attack!

"Ninjas!" Kaito says as they leap down. "I can't believe it's actually ninjas! Feels like so long..."

He materializes the Staff of Raiden in his hands and charges in alongside Hanzo, who draws one of his swords. The first ninja to land draws a sword and runs to meet them; he slashes horizontally but Kaito leaps up, smashing him in the head with an overhead strike from his staff.

Scorpion meets the other two in close combat, attacking and blocking with his sword against theirs with fast, quick cuts. Kaito watches his ninja drop to the ground.

"Well, that wasn't so--"

Suddenly, another arrow is launched at his feet. Kaito jumps back as three more ninjas jump down, and he and Scorpion become even more outnumbered, not that he's worried---backup should be here soon.

He points his staff at the oncoming ninja and prepares his next attack!

Kaito meets the charge of the leading ninja with a surprise leg sweep, tripping him and sending him rolling over his back. He turns and swats him down onto the ground with the staff, flattening him to the stone floor.

He turns around as the other two ninja approach and he raises his free hand to conjure forth a wave of flames that causes them to keep their distance. They look on at him with wide eyes as they stop running and back off.

Kaito doesn't let them get too far, however; he brings up a foot and stomps the earth, creating a pillar of rock beneath one of them that juts upwards, hurling the ninja towards Kaito, who then swings his staff like a baseball bat and hits him in the air, knocking him to the ground before battering him once more.

Scorpion, meanwhile, cuts off the hand of one of them before twisting and slicing off his head with one clean chop. The second one charges in before Scorpion teleports behind him with a fiery vanish before stabbing him in the back, cleanly impaling him on his sword.

At this moment, Kaito looks around and sees that more ninjas are appearing. Yanake's town guard are taken by surprise as they begin to appear and attack. Another group of ninjas appear from a nearby rooftop, all three of them armed with bows, as they prepare to fire at Yanake's covered position.

Kaito shouts a warning to Scorpion about the bowmen on the rooftops before rolling towards Yanake and slamming both fists onto the ground, forcing a stone shield upwards to block the onslaught of arrows. As Scorpion teleports up to the rooftop, Kaito helps Yanake up. "Let's get back to the palace," he says.

As he turns around, a ninja suddenly leaps down and attacks Kaito, stabbing out with his sword. Kaito attempts to use his staff to block the attack but the warrior curves his sword to cut Kaito's hand, drawing blood, before kicking the staff out of his hand entirely.

He charges Kaito, swinging and slashing, with Kaito just barely able to dodge. The staff flies through the air and is caught... by Yanake.

She grabs her ornate robes and tears them off, revealing a familiar, fiery-orange-red outfit, the same one she once wore as a rebel to Shao Kahn's rule. With the Staff of Raiden in hand, she shouts as she takes out her hairpin, allowing it to fall freely, before spinning the staff in her hands and attacking the ninja from behind, striking his leg and forcing him onto a knee before jabbing the back of his skull, knocking him out.

"I am not without defense!" she shouts as she strikes the man again. "How dare you think you can kill me!"

Kaito, taken aback by her sudden explosiveness, is nonetheless impressed.

He looks up and sees Scorpion battling the archers. Takeda leaps from a nearby rooftop to join him as master and apprentice battle alongside each other against the assassins.

"So happy it's ninjas..." Kaito mutters to himself with a smile.

Kaito takes his staff back and throws it up to the two Shirai Ryu warriors, before grabbing Yanake and teleporting both of them to the rooftop. He hands her back the staff as they join in the battle against the ninja assassin, forming an unstoppable four-man team against them.

Soon enough, they are joined by Forest Fox, who informs them of the success of the other Shirai Ryu. Several of the assassins have been captured and the rest are in retreat; the are currently being chased down.

Scorpion wipes off the blood on his sword on a dead ninja's back. "Good," he says before putting it away. "One of them will talk. We will find the source of this conspiracy in time."

He gives a look to Yanake, impressed with her ability to handle herself; neither he nor Kaito had anticipated seeing her in action today.

"I will return to the palace," she says, handing Kaito his staff.

"I shall remain by your side," Scorpion offers. "Takeda, Fox, return to the others. Continue tracking down the assassins."

Takeda and Fox both nod before heading out.

We just need to have the biggest smile right now, we just fought real ninjas for the first time in a long time.

My memory is a little hazy, when did we fought against nijas? Not counting the Cyber Lin Kuei, the Scorpion and the Noob fights?

Well, Phlox is a pink ninja. Rain's a purple ninja. Reptile's a green ninja.

As for generic ninjas, they've always been a background element. I imagine Kaito fought a few during his time in Outworld around the second Mortal Kombat tournament just helping Kitana and Yanake in their battles; they're just henchmen after all.

Plus, we did fight those four Lin Kuei jobbers that Sub-Zero sent to greet us, but I think Kaito is just happy that he gets to fight ninjas that aren't his friends again.

Kaito heads down to the street, smiling and whistling as he revels in the fact that he got to fight ninjas today. He helps some of the guards drag corpses and unconscious ninjas into two separate piles. As he picks up one, the ninja groans. "Only... matter of... time..."

Kaito sits him down and lightly slaps his face. "Hmm? Something you want to share with the class? Speak up!"

The ninja opens his eyes. "It's only a matter of time... She'll be dead soon enough..."

The man passes out and Kaito throws him onto the pile. Mileena and Cinder approach him then. "We have run them out, killed them or burnt them," Mileena says. "I do not think they will be so bold as to try again."

"Not until we find out who sent them," Kaito says. "One of them was just talking but passed out."

Mileena takes out a sai. "Perhaps we should persuade him to speak up some more..."

Kaito picks up the ninja who had spoken previously and carries him off into an alley with Mileena and Cinder close behind. Fetching a pale of water, Kaito prepares to get to work. He hasn't had much experience with torture, but Mileena has.

When he awakens with a small splash of manipulated water, Mileena takes off her mask and snarls as Cinder goes into his fiery form. Kaito informs the man that if he doesn't speak, he'll let them go at him and then he'll be healed. Then again and again and again...

The threat alone proves good enough for the man, though it did require Mileena grabbing his hand and putting it dangerously close to her mouth. The man confesses, "We did as our clan was paid to do!" he says.

"Who, then?" Kaito asks. "Who?"

"Our payment was sent by the emperor, across the sea! The kahn!"

Kaito sits back a bit. Mileena bites the man's arm but he screams, "It's the truth! The kahn---Kotal Kahn!"

"Can't be," Kaito says. "Kotal Kahn is allies with Yanake and her people."

Cinder folds his arms. "He could still be lying..."

"I'm not!" he cries as Mileena stops biting him and wipes her mouth.

"We know nothing," he says. "We were paid to kill her! We took payment in koins, a rich wealth of them! More was promised on completion of our assignment!"

Kaito lets go and the man speaks some more. "We took the assignment because we are not associated with this realm, not part of its politics---it was just money," he says. "We are not even from Outworld!"

Kaito pauses. "What? Then who are you, and where are you from?"

"We are from Earthrealm," he says. "We are the Tengu Clan."

"Never heard of you," Kaito says. "Who is your master? Who accepted the job?"

"Our clan's leader, Wu Lae! He is the one you seek! I know nothing more, nothing!"

After throwing him in the dungeons, they proceed to the palace. From there, they explain to Yanake what they have learned.

"I do not understand," Yanake says. "My kingdom has never had ill relations with Kotal Kahn. We have never engaged in much diplomacy, but..."

"It may not truly be him," Kaito says. "Perhaps it is someone pretending... I mean, the guy gave it up pretty early, right? And wouldn't Kotal Kahn hire someone to kill someone through someone else, so there is no trail that leads directly back to him?"

"It would be very poor work if he did not," Hanzo says with a nod. "People do not hire assassins with loud mouths... I suspect another party may be at work here, fostering ill will between Outworld's nations."

"Unless," Kaito says, holding up his hand, "he would count on us thinking it is someone else because of how overtly he was linked to the assassins. Eh? Reverse psychology."

"I doubt it goes so deeply," Mileena says. "But in matters of cloak and dagger, who can say..."

"I think we should pay him a visit," Kaito says. "Hanzo, would you be willing to stay here?"

Hanzo nods. "We would be honored, Lady Yanake." He puts his hands together and bows before her, turning back to Kaito when he is done. "You mean to head straight for Kotal Kahn?"

"Not yet," Kaito admits. "I have a place I'd like to stop in Edenia first..."

Hanzo holds out a hand and Takeda enters the room, stepping out from the shadows. "Perhaps you would be interested in a temporary guest on your ship."

"I have a lot of those," Kaito says with a smile, but always room for one more." He reaches forward to clasp Takeda's hand. "Welcome to the Dragon Wing. How long will you be with us?"

"Master Hasashi wants me to accompany you to Kotal Kahn's court," he says. "Another set of eyes and ears."

After saying goodbye and good luck to Yanake and Hanzo, Kaito returns to the Dragon Wing with his companions. Once on board, Kaito heads down into the cargohold to let out Elvis and play with him, promising to take him on a walk soon.

Kaito has never been to the stormy region of Edenia before, so he is allowing Mileena and her crew to sail there from Outworld, giving him some time.

Vapor appears and approaches him. "Kaito?" she gets his attention. "I... I wanted to talk."

"So did I," he says, putting Elvis down. "I wanted to apologize for everything you've been getting into lately... I never intended for you to get this well-versed in the weird web that is my personal lovelife."

She grabs her arm and averts her eyes. "I don't mind it so much..." she says. "I never got to meet too many other people, so seeing the world through someone else's eyes isn't so bad. And while it was a little awkward... in that temple with Turana... I understand what you're going through. I m-mean, not that I know what it's like, in a relationship or anything, it's j-just--"

Kaito holds up a hand and interrupts her. "It's okay, I know what you mean. Thank you for being discrete in these matters, though, I can't tell you how much I value it."

"O-okay," she says. "I just hope you don't want me to leave because I know too much, or--"

Again he interrupts. "No, no, no. You're very skilled at what you do, Vapor; I don't think I could find an equal or better replacement."

"Thank you," she says with a sigh.

Suddenly, Takeda walks into the room. "Hey, Kaito, I---" he stops when he sees Vapor, whose eyes widen and she instantly vanishes. "Uh, what? Who was that?"

"She's just a bit shy," Kaito says. "What's up?"

"Nothing, they're just ready to get underway. I'm excited to be on this ship; I've heard a lot about it." He looks down at Elvis. "Hey! Cool! A dog!"

He kneels down and scratches the mastiff's head before he rolls over allowing access to his belly.

Kaito cracks his knuckles a bit. "So, ready to learn from a fossil?"

"Maybe I should change my title from chujin to paleontologist," Takeda replies, similarly preparing himself as he stands up.

"The only way to learn Bloody Hands it to know how to take a beating and dish it back out," Kaito begins.

"Then let's get going!"

For the next few hours, Kaito and Takeda bond over many punches, kicks and elbow slams. Takeda has plenty of speed, but Kaito helps him refine his power. Kaito has never been a teacher before, and therefore has no strict method of teaching outside of personal experience, so he aims to give Takeda that very same kind of experience.

Takeda learns quickly, trying his best to emulate Kaito's punches and movement as they battle. Elvis sits off to one side and watches them, barking every now and then. A few members of the crew stop by and watch for a bit before returning to work.

When it's over, they're both a bit bloody and quite bruised. Kaito gets some water and concentrates on using it to heal them both of any injuries and soreness.

"That's amazing," Takeda says. "How do you do that?"

"Just a gift I once received," Kaito replies. "We're on our way to free another shard of a broken goddess; Wind. She'll grant me more power when I do."

"You said that Cinder is the son of Fire, right? Do you think this Wind might have some kind of connection to Fujin?"

"I don't know," Kaito replies. "Rain is the son of Water... I don't know who Earth's child is. But I think Fujin is of Earthrealm, so it wouldn't make much sense to me if he was. Plus, the naming convention would be off."

"Good point," Takeda says.

They head up on deck and Kaito looks out over the water; they are sailing directly into a gigantic, swirling blue portal with storms around it. He approaches Mileena. "Is this it?"

"It's on the other side," she says. "You're going to want to hold onto something."

As they sail through, the water becomes fierce, the storm around them roars and the ship begins to rock. Everything that can be tied down for safety is as the crew prepares to make the journey---they have made it before, and are ready.

The other end of the portal only gets worse. Waves crash against the hull as wind strong enough to knock a man down blows. Kaito holds onto the railing near the wheel as the Dragon Wing is caught in the storm.

"She is at its heart!" Mileena shouts. "We must go further!"

Kaito summons the Staff of Raiden---this is no natural storm, but perhaps he can lesson its ferocity!

Kaito holds the Staff of Raiden up high, commanding the storm to be calm. While the unnatural magical region refuses to be completely still, the wind and waves die down, allowing them more stable control over their ship.

They make their way through the crashing waves and strong winds, heading towards the heart of the storm. A massive, swirling tornado, reaching from the heavens to the ocean, continues to swirl, regardless of Kaito's attempts to control the storm.

"We cannot sail too closely," Mileena shouts over the wind. "The storm will tear the ship apart!"

Kaito knows that, regardless of the skill of his crew, that storm at the heart is magical---the prison containing Wind. But how to approach it...

Kaito steps up onto the railing and takes off his shirt before preparing himself, getting his mind into a state of clear. He looks at Mileena. "I'll be right back." He leaps off the edge and into the water, finding himself swimming in the stormy water. As he nears the swirling water, he is taken away and whisked far under the surface.

Kaito struggles to maintain concentration as he breathes under the water, daringly defying the storm as it rages around him and draws him further and deeper within.

Kaito successfully maintains his concentration and doesn't black out as he is thrown beneath the waves. After some time, he is dragged to the surface by unnatural currents and tossed onto a rocky shore.

He coughs a bit and looks up, seeing that this rocky island is at the heart of the heart of the storm. Apart from a thick, piercing mist, all seems calm as the tornado obscures all vision of what lies beyond.

He picks himself up and prepares the climb.

Kaito hangs precariously on the end of the staff. He inches back to the pillar and gets his footing once more as he makes his way back up.

He focuses intently on not making the same mistake twice, until he eventually sees the top of the pillar.

He climbs over the edge and rests for a moment before opening his eyes and looking at what is on top of the pillar.

A single, ancient bottle of blue glass, with considerable buildup on its outside.

Sorry, I was DMing Dark Sun.

Kaito picks up the bottle and shakes it a bit. He then rubs it, thinking that perhaps he can dust it off and see some kind of writing.

He then opens it up.

A gust of wind bursts out of the bottle, nearly knocking Kaito backwards and off the top. A cloudy figure of mist swirls and forms into a woman, bald with a tattoo on her face, wearing white clothing---rather thin clothing, Kaito immediately notices.

She looks down at him with a smile. All around them, the storm seems to die down and the air calms.

"You have freed me," she says with a soft, soothing voice. "Many have attempted this perilous journey, and all have perished. You alone have succeeded." She closes her eyes. "I sense power within you... Water, Earth, Fire..."

"Yes. You're all that remains," Kaito says. "Wind."

She nods. "You know of what comes next. The question that remains is what you desire the gift to be."

Kaito stands and looks at her. "Alright," he says, "I'd like the power to manipulate and bend the air and fly."

"So you have asked," she says, "so it shall be granted for the task you have accomplished."

Before she bestows the power upon him, he holds up a hand. "Wait, I have to know; when do you and the other shards purify Decay?"

"The time is not yet right," she says.

"Well, when will it be right?" he asks.

"When the last son of Argus awakens," she says.

"What? What does that mean? I don't--"

Suddenly, she turns into a cloud and sucks herself into his open mouth as he speaks. His eyes open wide and he begins to cough from his rapidly-filled lungs as he steps back, falling off the edge.

Kaito tumbles down and panics for a moment as he looks and sees the sharp rocks below. He puts his hands out and focuses, closing his eyes.

After a moment, he opens them, and realizes he is levitating.

Kaito straightens himself and holds his hands out. He is not flying so much as he is levitating, manipulating the air around him. His hair whips about as he stabilizes.

He curls up and kicks outwards, propelling himself into the sky with a burst of air behind him. By manipulating the air underneath him, he can aim himself into a new direction and guide himself along, but it is not as precise as his old cape was, nor as stealthy as he finds out.

He skims along he surface like a skipping stone, creating bursts of air behind him and running across the surface in great bounds.

He spies the Dragon Wing, now sailing on much safer waters. He makes it to the edge of the boat and shoots upwards with a combination of water and air bending, jumping onto the railing.

Mileena approaches him as the others look on. "The storm is gone," she says. "You succeeded?"

"Wind is free," Kaito says with a smile. "Now then... Let's pay a visit to the kahn, shall we?"

Less than an hour later, the Dragon Wing sails to a port it has not visited for a very long time; the Kove near the capital city of the empire of Outworld. Sailing past a large, skull-shaped rock, the nethership reaches the dock and the crew begins to moore the ship to it.

Kaito looks out onto the docks and sees the city beyond; Shao Kahn's citadel, which once loomed over the city, no longer exists, having been destroyed in the invasion of Earthrealm. But the city seems to have expanded and changed quite a bit in the time since, with new buildings and styles of architecture. Statues of Shao Kahn are nowhere to be seen; statues of Kotal Kahn, however, are.

A large, burly man approaches their ship. "Ahoy! Ten koins to moore your ship to the dock! The kahn's not keeping the port open to those who won't pay!"

Kaito has plenty of koins. He fetches a bag of them from below the ship in the cargohold and steps off the dock, taking out ten jade koins and handing them over. The man inspects them and nods before moving on. Kaito ties the koins to his belt before looking back to the ship.

Mileena jumps off onto the dock and approaches him. "Some of the crew will stay with the ship, but many of them are familiar with the city. I'm going to give them some time to go out and get a drink."

"Sounds like a good plan," Kaito says as Takeda jumps down alongside them, followed by Cinder. "Maybe we should head directly for the palace."

They follow him as they enter the crowded outer district of the city, through the markets. This place hasn't changed too much; Outworlders, mutants, reptile-like saurians, ogres and all manner of varied species can be seen.

Kaito looks around at the many merchants and stalls, wondering if he should take a look on the way to the palace. Cinder certainly seems interested; he's stopping to look at almost every piece of pottery in front of one stand, and Takeda is taking in all the sights and sounds of the market.

As Mileena points Kaito towards a main road, an old woman bumps into him accidentally. The woman apologizes profusely and begs his forgiveness before moving on.

He whirls around, scanning the crowd, but the old woman is gone. "I was just robbed!" he says to Mileena, who begins scanning her orange eyes around the hustling and bustling crowd.

Takeda suddenly taps on Kaito's shoulder. "Hey, I think I saw something while you were talking to that woman; some guy walked up behind you and then walked away."

"Why didn't you say anything?" Kaito asks.

Takeda can only offer an apologetic shrug. "I mean, I don't know, it was too fast---I didn't think he was behind you long enough to steal anything, and I mean Mileena was right next to you."

Kaito looks at her, but she shakes her head. "I didn't see him," she says.

Kaito looks around the market. "Well, where did he go? What direction?"

Takeda looks around and points. "That way... I think. Maybe?"

Cinder looks around at the many people moving about along with the animals. Hundreds of potential hiding places can be found in a place like this... or not found, that is.

Suddenly, there is a small explosion in the market. Kaito and many around him turn to see a rising column of flames from one corner of the marketplace as Cinder goes full-fury on something. Kaito looks on as the fiery man blasts a cart.

Just as Kaito is about to run over there and slap him in the back of the head, a figure dashes out into the open from behind the cart. He skids along the dirt road with one hand on the ground, stopping to look up for only a moment---making eye contact with Kaito.

It's just some kid with a brown hood and wrappings around his hands. But in one of them is clutched his money bag.

The thief, without pausing for more than a fraction of a second, takes off running, kicking up dirt behind him in his speed.

Kaito immediately charges after him.

Kaito follows the thief down an alleyway, where the kid kicks out a wooden stand holding up a series of wooden poles and staves. Kaito attempts to jump over them, but one catches his foot and he falls down and trips. Slamming a hand down onto the ground, he uses his wind powers to push himself back up to his feet and keeps running after him.

As Kaito reaches the crate and jumps up to grab onto its edge, the thief kicks off from it, pushing it back. Kaito manages to land on his feet and roll aside as the thief lands on a cloth stretched over a marketstand, bouncing off of it and onto a balcony of a nearby building.

Kaito propells himself upwards with wind, shooting the ground at his feet with a gust and kicking up dirt as he lands not far behind the thief.

"Excuse me! I need that!" Kaito calls out as the thief reaches the end of the balcony and leaps off into a dive. Kaito reaches the end and looks down, seeing him roll as he hits the ground.

Kaito leaps off and lands on his feet, continuing the chase.

The thief reaches into the bag and takes out a handful of koins. "FREE MONEY!" he shouts, throwing them up into the air. Immediately, people look up and start to reach for them, forming a crowd just behind the thief that blocks Kaito's immediate forward progress.

He makes his way around and just barely manages to keep sight of the thief as he runs down a nearby alley.

"STOP RIGHT THERE!" Kaito calls out, chasing him down into the alley.

This place is dark and shaded; it looks almost abandonned, with boarded-up windows and empty buildings.

But it also looks like a dead end. He has to be here, somewhere...

Kaito carefully keeps an eye on all possible angles of escape as he searches the alley. He looks into a building a sees the silhouette of a man inside, with his hood on. Smiling to himself, he charges inside and tackles him to the ground!

...Only to discover that the thief had taken off his shirt and placed it over some bags of sand stacked to be his height. Kaito looks at the sand spilling onto the floor and stands up, holding up the thief's hooded jacket.

"Clever bastard..." Kaito mutters to himself. "But he doesn't know what else I can do."

Kaito closes his eyes and places his hands on the ground. He focuses intently, concentrating, tapping into the earth around him. His tremorsense extends in many directions---he can sense people outside the alley, in the street, animals passing by... and a pair of feet moving in a building further within!

Kaito smiles as he realizes the thief has lost. Keeping a hand to the ground, he follows his tremorsense as the figure moves out into the open. He leaps out, shouting a warning. "STOP RIGHT THERE, THIEF!"

A little girl screams in surprise and falls back, crawling backwards to a wall and curling up, looking at him with big scared eyes. She draws a knife and points it at him with shaking hands.

Kaito immediately backs up and holds up his hands. "Woah, woah, hey, I'm not going to hurt you," he says. "I'm not---"

Just then, he feels a slight pain as something hits the back of his head. He looks down and sees a single koin hit the dust---someone threw it at the back of his head from above.

He looks up to the rooftops of the alleyway but sees nothing. The little girl then scrambles off towards a nearby wall with a hole in it just large enough for her to fit through and crawls through it.

Kaito leans down the picks up the koin, looking at it.

He can't help but crack a smile.

"Not bad..." he whispers to himself.

At that moment, Takeda runs past the alley's entrance and stops when he sees Kaito. "Uh, Kaito? Did you find the thief?"

"He got away," Kaito says. "He's damned quick..."

"Cinder's in trouble with the guards for setting that cart on fire when he found the thief," Takeda says. "Should we keep looking for him or head back? Or maybe I should keep looking for him?"

Kaito pockets the single koin and moves on out of the alleyway. Heading back to the marketplace at a slower pace, he's surprised by how far they travelled; the thief covered a long distance in a short time. Once there, they find Cinder being held at swordpoint by guards with skull masks and blue body point. Mileena stands between him and them, and he doesn't seem much to care about the current situation; he seems rather bored. After all, the guards pose little to no threat to him.

"I said I am Mileena! Daughter of King Jerrod and Queen Sindel of Edenia!" she says as they come into earshot. "You will not be taking this man to prison!"

"The laws of Kotal Kahn are clear! If he cannot pay for he destroyed property, he will pay in prison!"

"I will pay for his damages," Mileena says.

There are whispers in the ground when Mileena mentions her name. "Did she say Mileena?" "Daughter of Shao Kahn?" "Don't say his name!" "I heard she is a monster..." "She's a princess!"

Mileena ignores all of them as the guards converse amongst themselves. "You may pay," they tell her. Mileena looks at Takeda and orders him to run to the boat and collect koins and make it back without having them stolen this time.

As they wait, suddenly there is a commotion in the marketplace as people scramble to make way. They all turn as loud footsteps can be heard. Kaito's eyes widen as one of the strangest sights he's ever seen makes its way over.

A massive man---if it even is a man, and not some hairless gorilla mutant with a sack on its head---ridden by a tiny girl with leather armor and claw-gauntlets, along with a feathered headdress, make their way up to the guards.

"Who them?" the girl orders the captain to speak.

"She says she is Mileena, from Edenia," the man says.

"Milly..." the girl replies, staring at her. The large man beneath her grunts. "Ferra no believe her! Torr no believe her either!" The large one, Torr apparently, grunts again, louder this time.

Kaito steps in front of them. "Hold it. I'm Akayama Kaito. I'll vouch for her---this is Mileena. She helped me kill Shao Kahn."

The crowd immediately breaks out into many hushed conversations. The woman looks at him before speaking in her high-pitched voice, "Akamakato?" Torr grunts in confusion.

Just then, another figure begins making her way through the market, accompanied by more guards. "Make way!" she orders.

Kaito freezes a bit. He has seen her before... yellow skin, black eyes, strange, chitinous-like texture all over her body. He encountered her during his time as Otiak.

She stands alongside the dynamic duo and looks at Mileena. "Mileena..." she says, her voice strange, as though she is speaking with two odd voices at once. "This one welcomes you to Outworld," she says with a small bow, "but cannot help but wonder as to the circumstances of your arrival."

"We came to speak with Kotal Kahn, D'Vorah," Mileena says. "But were plagued by thieves in your market."

D'Vorah straightens and looks at them with her black, alien eyes. "This one will take you to Kotal Kahn." She looks at the rider and brute and orders them away with a wave of her hand; they and the guards disperse.

D'Vorah stares at Kaito for a moment; he is unsettled by her.

As they walk, Kaito steps to walk alongside D'Vorah.

"So, who are you?" he asks.

"This One is called D'Vorah," she says.

"I've never met one of your kind. Where are you from?"

"The kytinn prefer solitude," she says, and that is all he acheives from her in that regard. She is strangely cold and disconnected, but then again she is almost an entirely different being than he is, as far as he can tell.

"And you serve Kotal Kahn, then?" he continues conversing with her.

"This One serves our emperor as First Minister. Kotal Kahn requires much every day, and trusts many things to his most loyal servants, important tasks. You have interrupted such a task, but the emperor will decide your fate."

Kaito gives her a strange look. He isn't sure he likes her tone very much.

"This One does not care to be a tour guide. You may see for yourself when brought before him."

Kaito backs up a bit to walk alongside Mileena, who gives him a knowing look, one that says, 'Yes, that's about all you'll get out of her.'

D'Vorah brings them both to a large stone courtyard. This place has probably the most different architecture from what Kaito remembers; ziggurat-like structures, serpent statues, feline-shaped carvings, it all has a distinctly Aztec-like vibe.

They are taken up a series of stairs to a large, open throne room. Upon an ornate throne sits Kotal Kahn, flanked by none other than Reptile and a woman clad in that Kaito does not recognize. Off to the side is someone he, unfortunately, does: Erron Black. They make brief eye contact, giving each other strange looks.

D'Vorah enters the throne room and bows. "Emperor, This One presents Princess Mileena of Outworld, and Akayama Kaito of Earthrealm."

Strange, Kaito doesn't remember giving her his name...

She turns to them. "Kneel before the Emperor!"

Kotal holds up a hand. "No, D'Vorah. They are not subjects. They are valued allies and sorely missed friends."

D'Vorah bows once more and slinks off to one side as Kotal Kahn rises and steps down to greet them personally. "Princess Mileena. It is always an honor to have you in my kingdom."

"Kotal Kahn, the fire that burns the sun," she says, shaking his hand.

He then turns his attention to Kaito. "But this is an even greater surprise," he says with a smile. Though he stands at least a foot taller than Kaito, he gets on one knee before him and bows his head. "Never have I been given the opportunity to thank the one who slew Shao Kahn."

"Well, I had some help from Mileena and Liu Kang," Kaito says as Kotal Kahn rises.

"Modesty is not required in my court," he says, clasping Kaito's hand with a firm grip and patting his shoulder. "Know that you are an honored guest and will always be treated as royalty."

"Thank you," Kaito says as Kotal Kahn places his arms behind his back.

"To what do we owe the pleasure of your visit?" Kotal asks.

"How goes ruling Outworld, Kotal?"

Kotal Kahn returns to his throne. "My territories are secure," he says as he sits. "My people are safe. Our strength continues to grow by the year as further territory is conquered in the south and west."

"Who resists you there?" Kaito asks.

"Holdouts of Shao Kahn's armies turned into warlord-driven societies allied with the Amazons and the disgraced shokan and cursed minotaurians."

"Minotaurians?" Kaito asks. "I've never heard of them..."

"Because once they were the centaurians," Kotal explains. "King Duroc and I placed a blood curse upon their race, robbing them of their four legs. Now they are minotaurs."

Kaito swallows a gulp. "Well, that's... interesting."

"They cannot hold against us forever," Kotal goes on. "Even as they were twelve years ago, they are fractured and unable to truly unite. Their foolish pride has failed to produce a leader among them capable of uniting their armies."

"Who leads the groups?" Kaito asks.

"Reiko leads the remnants of Shao Kahn's forces, as he has in a futile attempt to himself be Kahn. Gorbak was killed by his own grandson, Toron, who now leads the shokan who are loyal to him. Motaro leads the minotaurians and Zara is queen of the amazons."

Kaito nods, glad to be given a more in-depth explanation of what is going on. "May I learn the names of your advisors?" he asks.

"Certainly. You are acquainted with D'Vorah. To my left is Ruby, formerly of Hinpar."

She bows her head. Her attire reminds Kaito of Skarlet, a similarly-dressed female red ninja, but hers is a more traditional outfit. Her skin is also a bit darker than Skarlet's, who was very pale. Ruby stares at him with sparkling blue eyes, but does not speak. Kaito can only guess at her powers.

"My father, Kotal K'etz, is also a trusted advisor. He is currently away on business. Reptile is one of my most trusted warriors and spies, and the leader of his reborn zaterran race."

Kaito looks at Reptile; he seems slightly more deformed since last he saw him, with an oddly-shaped head and wide eyes, no longer looking quite as human as he used to. His zaterrans that he saw in the streets are also all similarly deformed, some of them even more so...

He remembers, long ago, when Khameleon attempted to stop the eggs that Shao Kahn had made for Reptile, and Kaito had sealed them into a cave rather than destroy them... Perhaps this is the end result. A race of lizard-like beings, some very grossly deformed, now ruled by Reptile.

Well... it seems he got his wish.

"Of course, you know Erron Black," Kotal Kahn says. "I understand that once he held a contract on your head."

"Once but no more," Erron says. "It was cancelled by the buyer."

Rain...

Kaito looks at him. "Nice to see you too, Black."

Erron takes out a bullet. "Pity... I had this bullet with your name on it." He puts it away, saving it for later.

'Just in case, eh?' Kaito thinks to himself.

Kotal goes on, "I also have Ferra and Torr; trusted warriors and enforcers of my rule."

"I think I met them in the markets," Kaito says. "A very friendly pair."

Kaito suddenly stops speaking as two of Kotal's guards push wooden chairs up to their backs, bow and walk away.

"Oh, thank you," Kaito says, sitting down. "Anyway, how are things with King Duroc and Tortek?"

"King Duroc rules his people in the northern lands of Kuatan as a strong and powerful leader. His shokan are allies that helped defend this kingdom and our territories against our shared enemies. Tortek, while a valued ally, led his people back to the wastelands in the south where they have become a problem."

"What? How so?"

"They are a useful deterrant against the amazons, I will concede. Their nomadic, barbarian ways help keep them from crossing the wastelands into my territory. However, though Tortek has reigned them in by considerable measure, the tarkatans are inherently an unruly people, therefore difficult to rule over---they tend to form smaller rival tribes of raiders who turn their gaze north and prey upon my people. Several such incidents have occurred and resulted in sour relations between my court and Tortek. As much as I appreciate his efforts, his are a bloodthirsty and savage kind. Passage south cannot always be certain, even for my people."

Kaito nods, finding that news rather unfortunate. He changes the topic. "Say, I was wondering, how is Xos doing?"

"Ah," Kotal smiles once more. "A faithful and powerful mount, he was. It was a painful day when he perished in battle, his jaws locked around traitorous scum."

"Oh, that's a shame," Kaito says.

"Fortunately, I possessed enough foresight to breed him, and now his descendents are the personal mounts of my officers, along with other great beasts. Perhaps you would enjoy one of his offspring?"

"I would consider it no issue. Return at sundown to my court and we may speak again."

Kaito stands up and gives a small bow of his head. "Thank you, Kotal Kahn."

As they turn, Takeda walks up with a bag of koins. "I have the money," he says to Mileena. "Did I miss anything?"

"Not much," Kaito says as Mileena takes the bag. "Did anyone try to rob you on the way here?"

At that, Kotal suddenly speaks. "What is this of robbery?"

Kaito turns back to him. "Oh... I was robbed in your market by a thief. I gave chase to him but he got away."

Kotal sits back a bit, his features tightening as he lets out an irritated sigh through his nostrils. "The boy..." he mutters.

"Well, in this instance it's not so horrible," Kaito says. "Honestly, he took nothing of true value from me."

"That is not any concern," Kotal says. "What offends me is that I cannot have honored guests walking through my markets without a thief looking upon them with hungry eyes. I will not allow such an insult to my rule to grow!" He curls his hand into a fist and slams it upon the arm of his throne. "When he stole from you, he stole from me! He stole from the sanctity of my rule!"

Kaito holds up a hand. "I understand your words, Kotal Kahn, I truly do, but I must ask for mercy on this thief. I chased him through your city and he eluded me---surely if he is good enough to rob me and escape, he must have some use?"
