You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Currently, you were dragging Heerman over to this newfangled part of Disneyland called STAR WARS LAND. You had hear about this "Star Wars" and had a vague idea about what it was. Some kind of science fiction movie series or something, but it had LASERS and LASER SWORDS, so you suppose it couldn't be all that bad!

"You don't have to keep dragging me like this!" Heerman groans.

"No can do!" You say happily. "FULL STEAM AHEAD!"

Thanks to your reflexes and a little help from your onboard radar, you can easily weave your way through even this thick crowd at full speed. It was nothing compared to having to dodge torpedoes and shell fire, considering people tended to be big and much much slower.

However, you might have gone a little TOO fast, as you end up right smack dab in the middle of Star Wars Land before you even realize it. Heerman finally shakes her hand free of you grip and she just sighs in exasperation.

"See what happens when you just go off at full speed like that? We practically missed everything on the way here." She chastises you.

"Don't be silly, we can see it all on the way back out!" You assure her.

It's at this point that you finally manage to get a good look around you, and you freeze as your optics try to take everything in. In addition to the crowds of people, you were surrounded by a set of very futuristic looking buildings, as well as a few exotic looking aircraft, like one plane with a big, rod shaped fuselage and what looked to be four wings with large cannons sticking out of them. Elsewhere, you could see other odd fighters that looked like balls with large flat panels bolted onto them. How on Earth were those damn things supposed to fly?

Closer to the ground, interspersed with the regular crowd, you could catch a lot of people in costume, similar to the parade you had seen earlier. Mostly men dressed in white armor and menacing looking masks, walking around and "harassing" random guests as well as stopping to take pictures with them.

It all looked rather fun, actually. It was a refreshing change of pace to see people in an environment where they didn't have to constantly fear Abyssal attack.

"Hey look, a sign." Heerman points.

Well, you weren't exactly a carrier or anything, but even you could appreciate just how fucking cool fighters could be. You've heard how technology these days was so good that you could actually fly a plane without actually flying it! Might as well give it a try, huh?

"Hey, Heerman, how about we pretend fly some future planes?" You say, pointing to nearby circular, squat building holding up a huge sign depicting the two titular fighters flying at each other at high speed, flinging lasers at each other in an epic display of poor marksmanship.

"Could be fun." Heerman nods in agreement.

"THEN LET'S GO!" You grin madly as you grab her hand again and drag her to the attraction.

Naturally, the outside has a rather long line going around the building, but a quick flash of your VIP passes and the two white armored guards at the door direct you to an alternate entrance that leads straight into the building. They weren't kidding when they said these badges would give you serious perks! If you had waited in line like everybody else, you probably would've been stuck in there for an hour, at least!

Inside, you could immediately see the interior of the building separated into two halves, each one containing large pods that had to be the simulators. The entrance fed into an aisle that went direct through the center of the chamber, where it split off into to distinct paths...

You don't know why, but you had an itch to try out the TIE Fighter. Mainly, you were just curious about how such an oddly shaped fighter could even fly, much less fight, even though you knew as a fake craft, they were probably just gonna make shit up anyways, but whatever. You swing to the right, where you see a small line of people already waiting, blocked off by another guard a checkpoint. At that moment, an alarm blares, and all at once the pods crack open, and the previous occupants begin climbing out. Some look happy, while others look greener than a rookie sailor. You also see park staff carefully inspect each and every pod, no doubt checking to make sure nobody was hiding in them and that there weren't any nasty "surprises" in them. Finally, the inspectors give a thumbs up and the guard nods and steps aside.

"Please pick one pod and one pod only. No running or pushing, there's enough for everybody here." The guard warns.

But practically nobody listens to him as everybody dashes for the simulator pods. You quickly claim one for your own while Heerman takes up the one next to you. You climb in, and immediately see the circular canopy in front of you. Now, you were not expert in fighter design, but you get the feeling that this sort of setup would seriously cut down on your peripheral vision. One of the park staff then leans in and helps buckle you into your seat.

"The pod will be closing shortly, so please keep your arms and legs inside at all times." The staff member says cheerfully as she quickly withdraws to tend to the next guest. With a soft hum, the pod doors slowly slide closed, temporarily shrouding you in darkness until the screen lights up.

"Welcome, cadet." The image of a snooty man in a black officer's uniform appears on the canopy screen. "It is always encouraging to see somebody willing to eliminate REBEL SCUM. You have been granted access to one of our most advanced TIE fighters. Operation is simple. The control stick in front of you controls the movement of your craft, the throttle to the right controls your speed, and the trigger fires your lasers and missiles."

As the officer says this, visual diagrams of how to work the controls play on screen. It looks easy enough. After all, you figure they had to make this easy to operate for all possible age groups.

"This is the ENEMY." The officer continues with utter disdain as an image of an X-Wing pops up on the screen. "Your objective is to shoot as many of them down as possible. Work together with your fellow TIE fighter pilots and victory shall be ours. For the Empire!"

With that, the screen flickers to black, being replaced with the vast empty blackness of space, until large, yellow fonted yellow letters appear.

Immediately, the screen lights up, highlighting the locations of both enemies and allies. To your right, you see a large formation of blue framed TIE fighters, while to the left, you see X-Wings in red frames.

Sorry, that was a reference to discussion about the miniature game. Namely that Imperial fighters find it natural to and are designed to link up and work together, while rebel fighters go at it alone.

(Also Thrawn is now merely Legends canon, so probably won't appear again. Lastly, Grant-Scipio when?)

You nudge the stick to the right, and are a bit surprised at how responsive the TIE Fighter is. You guess in space aerodynamics didn't really matter, so those big ass panels that were poor excuses as wings wouldn't really impact your performance that much. Anyways, you head for the group of TIEs. As a destroyer, you knew the value of strength in numbers. You wonder if Heerman was among those TIEs, but there was no way to tell the difference between any of them. What you did notice, however, was that some fighters on both sides seemed to have quickly grasped the controls, while others were very clearly struggling, their fighters pretty obviously making knee jerk turns and inconsistent bursts of speed, like they were drunken bees or something. You can immediately notice the "better" fighters on both sides making beelines for the weaker ones.

>FATE POINT GAINED
>You have one point!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJzuanMUuS4

The X-Wings begin to fire, and at that moment, the TIEs scatter in all directions in a panic. However, before the X-Wings can really capitalize on your allies' confusion, you center your crosshairs over the trailing X-Wing and pull the trigger. Immediately, a stream of green energy bolts are pumped into rear of the X-Wing, throwing sparks and lighting until the fighter explodes brilliantly. You nose back over and fire on the next one, but at this point the small gaggle of X-Wings realize what's going on and scatter as well. You pick out one X-Wing and follow it, pumping more and more laser fire into it...

Suffice to say, the rest of the simulated battle was just a mass of chaos. You kind of lose track of what happens as it's just a blur of lasers, space fighters, and explosions. All fake, of course, but enjoyable nonetheless.

"Congratulations, cadet, you have truly shown the Rebel scum the might of the Empire!" The officer says happily. "However, it is time for us to leave this system. I hope I will have the honor of fighting alongside you again. Be sure to disengage your restraints and leave the pod carefully once it opens."

With that, the pod cracks open, letting in the light and temporarily blinding you. You slowly unbuckle your restraints and step out, your legs oddly weak and wobbly.

"Ha ha, you too?" Heerman smiles as she limps her way over.

"Yeah, it was fucking INTENSE!" You exhale happily.

"So... where to next?" Heerman breathes, as the both of you stumble out of the simulator building.

"Hey, let's see what this "Jedi Training' shit is!" You say happily.

"What are Jedi, anyways?" Heerman asks in confusion.

"Hell if I know. But it's gotta be cool, right? You shrug.

However, when you do reach the area, you find the wind knocked out of your sails just a bit. From the looks of it, it was basically a daycare. It was basically just a little pen, with little kids running around with big colored plastic sticks whacking each other with them and having a great time doing.

"Well, this is a bit unexpected." Heerman frowns.

It's not that you were against hitting things with sticks, but given the... age of these kids, it would probably not be great for your image beating all of them down. However, like the simulator, you do notice some of the weaker kids getting singled out...

"Nope. I'm dead serious." Heerman grimaces as she shows her phone display to you.

"Ummm.. heh... heheh..." You start feeling sweat dripping down your back. "M-maybe we should back out?"

"We're already in line." Heerman points out. "If we back out now, we'd make a scene."

Yamato didn't sink Hoel - I believe Kongou got us - but she was there and pretty unmistakable. Those ships knew exactly who they were up against and went in anyway.

I'd believe this more if I hadn't read about about how the US didn't realize the Yamato had 18" guns until after the war.

Like I get that they realized they were up against the Japanese fleet, but I doubt they had a clear conception that Yamato existed or what she actually was. (Remember, they tried to keep them super secret and we didn't start getting clear images that we can confirm are Musashi until recently with finding her wreck.)
>>
>>45104317
They fired on her crew as they were abandoning ship after hitting her with dozens of rounds - only about 80 survivors got off iirc -- so I doubt she has fond memories.

She tried to torpedo Kongou earlier in the fight so I suspect the feelings mutual...

"Hah... don't be silly, we've faced down the entire might of the Imperial Japanese Navy! We're not gonna get scared by some dumb steam train ride!" You boast.

"Yeah... yeah. How silly!" Heerman nods in agreement.

The awkward silence and forced smiles tell the rest of the story. Soon enough, the train rides in, screeching to a halt as the current riders dismount. You notice quite a few of them looking terrified or sick.

"W-well. I guess we gotta go, right?" Heerman gulps.

"Yeah." You gulp as well.

Unfortunately, as you're ushered in, you somehow get pushed up to the front car, where you receive an absolutely unimpeded view of what's coming next. The safety restraints being put over your lap feels like a death sentence rather than a safety feature.

"Um... um..." Heerman blushes as her hand scrabbles to find yours.

Admiral Sprague knew the moment he saw a 70k ton battleship (which was literally twice the tonnage of each of the other three battleships) he was up against the center force that had turned around and come back at them. What he didn't not know was that his entire battleship screening force had taken off after the IJN carrier with Halsey and left nothing between him and Kurita.

There is a difference between "Oh god, it's center force!" and "clearly I'm facing down the battleships Haruna, Kongo, Nagato, and Yamato, good thing Jane's has correct data* for all threes classes represent above."

I'm saying it would be closer to the first. (In part this is because at one point the US managed to convince itself that Shokaku was a battleship.)

Aw fuck it, you take Heerman's hand and hold on tight as the train picks up speed, barreling haphazardly through simulated mine tunnels and mountain ridges. You and your sister both scream loudly along with the rest of the riders as everything seem to go by in a blur, brief flashes of the surrounding park. You almost think you see Sam laughing at your predicament, but that was probably just a figment of your imagination.

You weren't uncomfortable because the ride was fast, or anything. You could go plenty fast on your own. It was just the... lack of control. Like your boilers were at full steam but you had no steering or rudder. Or, more accurately, some drunken asshole was at the helm as you went. It was terrifying... and a bit exciting! Finally, the train returns to its starting point, and grinds to a halt.

Thank god it was over! But why did you have feeling that you wanted to go again?

Nevertheless, you and Heerman manage to stumble out without vomiting. And that's when you run into Red and Johnston.

"Hey! Just the girls we were looking for!" Red grins, placing a hand on Heerman's shoulder.

"Yep! What a wonderful coincidence!" Johnston places an iron grip on your shoulder as well.

"What are you two planning...?" You frown.

"Well, it just seemed you two enjoyed Big Thunder Mountain SOOOO much!" Red gives a smug grin.

"So how about we try out Space Mountain? It's faster, and in the PITCH DARK!" Johnston cackles.

You and Heerman can only stare at each other in utter horror.

Suffice to say, the day was long and rather eventful. Thanks to the VIP passes, you were able to pretty much go through the entire park before the end of the day. After the ordeal that was Space Mountain, the Indiana Jones ride wasn't nearly as scary, though you were pretty sure the Haunted Mansion was gonna you nightmares for many nights to come. You also learned that Sam HATED It's a Small World. A useful tidbit, for sure!

However, the 6pm deadline comes all too quickly, and eventually you little group meets back up at Disneyland's central square.

"Daaaaaaaamn. That was an engaging day!" Red grins as she stretches. "Shit, the day's barely out and I'm already tuckered out! How about you girls?"

"Damn... haven't covered that much distance in a while." Sam wheezes.

"Too much desk work, not enough field work." Red chuckles and turns to you. "How about you girls?"

"I feel like I wanna puke." You groan.

"Second." Heerman agrees.

"I feel just fine!" Johnston proclaims brightly.

"I'm still good to go." White Plains adds.

"Well, if we hurry, I think we can still make a tour of Iowa. They're willing to stay open after dark for us. Unless you all wanna head for the hotel? I guarantee you'll love it!"

"Where is it?" You ask.

"I wanna see Iowa!" You proclaim.

"Yes! We can get up all inside of her!" Johnston giggles.

"That's not funny." Heerman punches Johnston lightly in the shoulder. "It's rude to talk that way about other ships when they're not present!"

"Nah, I don't think she'd mind!" Johnston grins.

"I think it'll be really educational." White Plains nod.

"All right, it's decided then!" Red proclaims. "Let's go!"

Red leads you back to the backstage area of the park, where another Seahawk is waiting. You all quickly board it and it quickly takes off, leaving Disneyland behind. As it gains altitude, you can see the rest of the city slowly light up as the sun goes down.

"It's beautiful..." Heerman breathes.

"Wow, I've never seen a city like this..." Johnston presses her face against the window.

"Certainly nothing like Honolulu, that's for sure." White Plains nods in agreement.

As the Seahawk nears the coast, you can see the difference, with the shore brightly lit with numerous smaller lights, and the ocean being a dark, lightless void save for the lights of the patrolling navy ships and aircraft.

"See down there?" Red points to a large bay up ahead, where you could see a number of ships illuminated. "That's Iowa right there."

"So, uh, Red." You mumble. "Does Iowa feel what happens to her old hull?"

"Ah, guess you wouldn't know since all of you got sunk or scrapped." Red sighs. "Well, when Iowa came back, the first thing the eggheads did was go over her old hull with a fine tooth comb. Did every sort of test imaginable, but Vahlen couldn't really find any kind of concrete link between Iowa's hold hull and her current shipgirl body. As far as we know, it's just any old regular hunk of steel."

"And what does Iowa think about that?" Heerman asks.

"Well, truth be told... Iowa doesn't really like hanging around or seeing it." Red sighs. "From what she's told me, it's sort like an out of body experience, or like looking in the mirror and your reflection not quite matching yourself. Made her feel really uncomfortable."

"Huh, I see." You frown. "Maybe she's just not used to?"

"Hell if I know." Red shrugs. "Though I don't see any of you being in any hurry to see your old wrecks."

"Actually, I think I'm better off not knowing." You frown. "I don't really have any interest seeing my 'old body'. Probably looks hideous from all the rust an coral, anyways."

"Yeah, figures." Red nods. "Anyways, we're touching down!"

The Seahawk lands right beside where Iowa is docked. You all leap out and it takes off to take care of its other duties. At the ship itself, you can see one man in a sailor's uniform rush down, nearly tripping over himself as rushes towards your group.

"Ohboyohboyohboy." The man says quickly as he pants, stopping in front of you. "Y-you're all Taffy 3, right?"

"I suppose you're our guide for today?" Red asks a bit cautiously.

"Yes! That's correct!" The man catches his breath and straightens up and gives a quick salute. "I'm Davies, one of the volunteers that runs the Iowa Museum! I'll be your guide for today!"

"Ah, okay." Red nods, now relaxing.

"W-well, before we start, I just have a small request." Davies gives a hopeful smile. "You see, it's so rare to see a shipgirl, much less meet one! I was hoping that, well, maybe I could take a picture of you all? Do commemorate the moment!

Red shoots you all a disapproving look, though she doesn't speak up or make a move to block him. Obviously she was leaving the choice up to you all.

"Of course!" Johnston gives a wide smile as she cracks her knuckles. "He wouldn't be so crass as to immediately post the picture on line, right?"

"Well, if that were the case, we'd immediately know who was guilty." Heerman adds.

"I'm sure you'll being overly paranoid." White Plains chuckles.

"Haha... I get it." Davies laughs, though he's visibly much paler now. "Don't worry, its just for personal interest, I assure you! Miss, if you would please..."

Davies hands his camera to Red and quickly dashes over to your formation. You all gather around him and smile as Red takes the picture.

"Thank you so much!" Davies squeals. "Oh, well, I suppose we should get started with the tour, yes? We normally don't stay open this late, but for guests with your status, we would gladly accommodate! Less people around too, so that works out for you as well!"

"Well, let's get this tour started, then." Red says.

"Of course! Of course!" Davies nods rapidly as he outright jobs up the gangplank. "Follow me!"

Davies leads you all up the main deck and to the bow of the ship, at the foot of one of her massive 16 inch turrets. Davies is wise enough to know not to lecture you about all of the WWII equipment, merely letting you all fool around. He leads you through the interior of the turret, where you marvel at just how HUGE the damn thing is. It might as well be it's own damn ship! It was a marvel to see just how freaking gigantic each individual cannon was, and you all agreed that with a bit of oil, you could probably cram Sam into one of them, much to her annoyance.

The interior tour was also rather eventful, with Davies guiding you through the bridge, the various officer and crew quarters, and even showing you a replica of FDR's wheelchair and the bath and elevator that had been custom built for him when he rode on Iowa. That was all stuff that you legitimately did not know before.

"Hey, what's that?" You ask as you point to a sealed door, the only thing present to indicate its purpose being a small plaque.

"Ah, that's Turret Two." Davies says somewhat sadly. "There was an ammo explosion inside during a firing drill that killed forty seven men. That plaque there is to commemorate them."

"Ah..." You say as the group suddenly becomes quiet.

"Well, that's all in the past. We can't change what happened." Davies claps his hands to try and draw your attention way. "How about I show you Iowa's modern armaments?"

"Modern armaments?" You blink.

"Ah, that's right. Iowa was combat operational up until the '90s. They upgraded her weaponry rather extensively." Heerman explains.

"Yes, just follow me!" Davies leads you all back up above decks, where he shows you what looks to be some kind of gun turret and a large missile on the deck. "During her 1980s refit, the Navy removed many of Iowa's old 5 inch cannons and replaced them with Phalanx CIWS and missiles launchers, to engage more... modern threats."

"Cooool!" You gush. You didn't really all that much about modern weaponry, other than the fact that it KICKED THE SHIT out of Abyssals if they managed to hit them. You still the recall the rain of missiles and bombs the F-35s had provided, and according to what White Plains, San Diego, and Portland had said, the LCSes had handled themselves rather well during the battle with the PT boats, their hellfire missiles proving to be huge tide turners against their numbers and speed.

"So... how do they work?" You ask again.

"Ah, well, there were three main weapons systems that were added onto Iowa postwar." Davies blushes a bit. "These two missiles you see here are the Harpoon and Tomahawk missile. The advantage of these weapons is their much longer range. The mk7 cannons have a maximum range of around 24 miles, while a Harpoon can travel around 70 miles and a Tomahawk can go up to 1000."

"Whoa!" Johnston's eyes widen. "How's that possible?!"

"That's... really far!" White Plains gasps.

"Well, that's the magic of rocket engines, I suppose!" Davies laughs lightly. "You see, the Harpoon here has its own miniature radar, so it will actually seek out its own targets and home in on them, which makes it good against other ships. The Tomahawk has a simpler guidance system, aiming at a fixed point on a map, so it's better at hitting land targets."

"So how about that gun?" You point the small turret. "It looks punier than a 5 incher."

"Ah, well, that's the Phalanx Close In Weapons System." Davies explains. "It's less of an offensive weapon and more a defensive one. What it does is detect incoming missiles like the Harpoon, and it fires a curtain of bullets in an effort to destroy the missile before it hits the ship.

Does anyone know what sort of postwar refits Heermann received? Google directed me to a forum post that claimed she had a SCB-74A refit. New gun armament was 4x1 5" and 3x2 3", but no details on sensors.

A FRAM rebuild with a QH-50 DASH drone and ASROC would be interesting, but at the cost of all torpedoes and most guns.

"Ha, well not really. Couldn't really blame her, though." Sam shakes her head. "I don't even know what Iowa would do if she did come back."

"Yep, the RMS Queen Mary." Red grins.

"Huh." Sam nods. "Interesting choice."

"Queen What?" You ask, a bit confused.

"An old cruise ship. When she got too old to sail, they moved her here and converted her into a floating hotel." Sam explains.

"So you're saying she's a hotel ship?" Heerman blinks.

"Pretty much. She was also pretty damn popular, before the Abyssals came. Her occupancy rates never really recovered after that. Last thing most people want is to be on a boat." Red shrugs. "Come on, let's go."

"Goodbye, I hope you come by again!" Davies bids farewell.

"Bye, Davies!" You all chime and wave as you leave.

"Huh, he was a pretty nice guy." Heerman muses.

"Ooooooh, do you have a crush?" Johnston coos.

"NO." Heerman says flatly. "I can have a good opinion of a person without having romantic interests."

"Suuuuuure." Johnston chuckles.

This time, instead of a Seahawk, you all take a bus to the Queen Mary. Red wasn't kidding when she said it wasn't far. The ship was practically docked in the same port as Iowa, her lights glowing brightly in the darkness. In addition to the Queen Mary, you also see the brightly lit hulls of a number of more modern cruise and container ships.

Don't tell Yamato about this.

"So, what are those other ships in the harbor doing?" You ask, pointing the moored cruise liners."

"Oh, those..." Red sighs. "Those ships originally carried in evacuees from the Pacific islands. Rather than go west to Asia, a lot of them figured they had better chances making the long haul east to the US. There weren't completely wrong, but... well... a lot of ships didn't make it."

"So, what do they do now?" White Plains asks, looking out with a bit of sadness.

"They're basically serving as floating refugee camps at the moment. A lot of the people on them aren't actually American citizens, so legally they can't actually step foot on the US until they're properly processed." Sam explains. "In the meantime, they have to stay on the ships."

"Sounds rough." Heerman sighs.

"Well, that's just how it is." Red shakes her head. "Even with the war going on, the US still has to enforce rule of law, or else it'll just be damn chaos out there."

At this point, the bus rolls to a stop in front of the Queen Mary. There, you see what appears to be a hotel employee loyally standing outside as if she was waiting for you this whole time.

"Ah, welcome everybody to the Queen Mary!" The woman says cheerfully. "I hope you'll all enjoy your stay tonight!"

>And that's it for tonight! This seems to be a good ending point, considering how much activity has slowed. As always, next thread will be next week, and don't forget Infinite Space on Saturday!
>And since we still have quite a few posts until autosage I'll stick around for some Q&A if you want!

Oh yes, the Japanese shipgirls are out there and kicking! Just, you know, kind of penned in at Japan.

Thankfully, due to the rather small amount of islands in the Atlantic, as well as being sandwiched between two continents with first world navies, the Atlantic is largely secure. It's considered a Blue Zone. Sporadic Abyssal presence but attacks are fairly rare. However, Abyssals still try to slip in through the poles, and the south Atlantic is slightly less secure due to Africa and South America having rather vulnerable coastlines.

The Royal Navy is largely Abyssals from the North Pole advancing south into the Atlantic, as well as protecting the Suez Canal. They also have a sizable garrison at the Falklands, which serves as South America's first line defense against Abyssals coming up from Antarctica.

You mean 'largely dealing with' right?

Also, how did the Abyssals make their worldwide debut?

Even if they do appear, there's really not enough of them to go around!

>>45106246
It was slow at first. Mostly just ships going missing without explanation. However, Day Zero when the Abyssals started attacking in force first occurred in the Pacific just off the Asian coast. As was said before, China tried to engage them and bit off a little more than they could chew.

Anyways, I'm conking out for the night so I'll give one last bump to the thread for anybody that might want to ask or discuss something. I'll try to answer any questions when I wake up!

Janes MIGHT have had correct data, I'm not certain. Unfortunately, ONI was absolutely convinced that the Yamatos had 16" guns and displaced 50,000 tons...
