Kaito kneels alongside Mileena as she lies upon a soft bed. Her mask has been removed and her neck exposed; the two red marks from the fangs of the serpent are clearly visible. Kaito holds her hand gently as he reflects on the reversal of their roles; whereas he had once been the one asleep and she would sit by his side, now she was forced into a poison-induced coma from a magical cobra with her own recovery unclear and him by her side. The context for both may be wildly different but it changes little.

Behind him, Liu Kang converses with Lady Yanake as Vapor, Sierra and Yahra look on. Mileena's condition is stable, but she shows no signs of waking up. Yanake's people do not have much experience with poison and lack many apothecaries or similar healers, but she has her best doctors preparing various herbal solutions. However, progress in that area looks to be unlikely. Kaito closes his eyes and shuts out all other conversation as he thinks about the only true way to find a cure for Mileena; at the source, with Turana.

Ever since he woke up and learned of her, Kaito has been wondering about her. Why has she chosen this dark path? Is it truly because of him? Since his awakening, he has heard nothing but bad news of her, from switching bodies with a little girl to killing her old body with the girl's soul inside of it, to draining the water of the Wellspring of Shun-Kuto. All of it culminating in this; sending a serpent to bite Mileena and invite him to come and see her. He can only imagine what she has planned for him ever since studying Shang Tsung's spell book.

Lady Yanake has promised to help keep Mileena safe here in her palace, but Kaito doubts that she can stop Turana from doing more if she chooses to, since the magical snake slipped in without anyone knowing. He resolves to take her back to the Dragon Wing, where her loyal crew can look after her, before he will decide what to do next. It's true that he has grown strong with the powers of Water, Earth and Fire, but before confronting Turana, he thinks that perhaps he should attempt to free Wind as well.

Perhaps all four shards, once freed, could purify their fifth sister, Decay, and become whole once more. A reunited goddess of Edenia could perhaps bring Mileena back, or bestow other gifts upon him. At the same time, he does not know if he should go and see Turana first---too much time without stopping her may result in her planning even greater schemes. And then there is this situation with Yanake's life being in danger from assassins---he could leave someone here to protect her, possibly. And this matter of Mileena's condition---perhaps it can be cured another way? With the Wellspring of Shun-Kuto gone, his first thoughts go to the royal family of Edenia. Perhaps Sindel or Jerrod can cure her. Otherwise, there are other kingdoms to consider, such as Kotal Kahn's empire or King Duroc of the shokan. There's also the new school of Master Bo' Rai Cho to consider; he has not yet visited it, but it is not far from this city, built atop a mountain.

Kaito brings Mileena's hand to his lips and kisses it gently. He has not known her for more than a short time since his awakening, but in that time they have shared many intimate moments. He feels terribly for her, not merely because he is a good person, but because he has come to care a great deal for her, perhaps even going so far as to love her. She certainly cares for him, having dedicated herself to living a nobler existence due to his example and waiting for him to come back. But what comes next, he wonders?

On another note (just want to get this out there early), while we will not be transitioning to him just yet, I have prepared an initial pastebin relating to Cao, our upcoming protagonist after Kaito. I have taken a bigger hand in crafting him than Kaito, coming up with most of his backstory, characterization, skills and flaws. In addition to this, I have gone a bit more in-depth with him as I experiment with some new gameplay features; he has eight skills that grant a +10 bonus to specific rolls relating to actions he can take, such as hiding or pickpocketing. I have also listed character flaws to help guide his roleplaying; these are things that can possibly be overcome through the story of the quest and are not necessarily permanent, but they are things he will start out with. His current fighting style is Street Brawler, and I have come up with five special moves and enhanced versions of them, moves which emphasize his desire to avoid taking damage and dodge or escape from enemies.

Since we have not begun playing with him yet, I would like some feedback on it. Suggestions on additions or alterations are welcome; it won't be cemented until we actually start playing with him. After a few moments, Kaito stands up and heads back to the door to the room. Liu Kang and Yanake stop conversing and wait to hear what he has to say.

"I've decided to take Mileena back to the royal family's palace in Edenia," he says to them. "She'll be safest there; Sindel has to have magical wards she can cast on her body to keep her out of the reach of any more magic."

"Very well," Liu Kang says. "Perhaps I should remain here to help protect Lady Yanake. I can send word to Bo' Rai Cho's school to have him come here."

"That's a good idea," Kaito agrees with a nod. "I had also though of getting the Shirai Ryu to come here. Perhaps the perfect thing to counter ninjas are ninjas."

"Scorpion may not agree," Liu Kang points out.

"Let me worry about that," Kaito replies. "I'll head to their temple to speak to them after I drop Mileena off with her family."

First Mate Sierra Fin steps forward. "What about us?"

"You and the crew can decide where to go; stay with Mileena or stay with me. But you should know that after I visit the Shirai Ryu, I intend to travel to the desert north to deal with Turana directly."

"Is that safe?" Liu asks.

"I can't hide from her forever and I cannot ignore this sign she's sent me," Kaito replies. "She wants a meeting and I'll give her one."

"Be wary," Liu warns. "She's been studying from the knowledge of Shang Tsung. Sorcerers cannot be trusted; their currency is deceit."

Knowing that Liu's own history with Shang Tsung is as twisted as his own, Kaito does not argue that point, but deep within him he still holds hope that Turana can be reasoned with.

As he returns to the room to look down at Mileena, Yanake enters. "Kaito, I want to apologize for this," she begins, but he holds up a hand.

"No, this isn't your fault," he insists. "In fact... it's more my fault than yours. I'll handle it."

He leans down and picks her up, holding her unconscious body in his arms. "I'm sorry that I won't be spending the night here after all," he tells her.

"I understand completely," she replies. "I am grateful for your visit and hope that we can do so again soon, without such unfortunate interferance."

Kaito, Vapor, Yahra and Sierra leave the city, heading back towards the coast. Once there, they get into the longboat and they row back to the boat. Once onboard, Kaito explains what happened to the crew. Needless to say, they immediately advocate retribution against this 'Turana' but Kaito holds them in check, telling them that they will first travel to the royal palace, a place they only left a short while ago.

As Kaito takes out the Staff of Raiden, he reflects on how much can happen in so short a period of time.

Transporting the ship back to Edenia takes only a few minutes. Once in the realm, Kaito brings Mileena before Jerrod and Sindel, apologizing for what has happened. Kitana comes into the throne room as Kaito explains what has happened and his intentions to travel to see Turana for himself.

Jon of Haven, one of the crewmen to come up with Kaito to the palace, then says, "Chomba, our crocodilian, is from the lands this Turana resides in. His people are from there. He left it willingly and never expressed any desire to return, but maybe he's a good idea to bring along."

Kaito agrees to take Kitana and Jade along with him, and returns to the boat with the others. Once there, he speaks with Chomba, the crocodilian, about his lands and his people.

"We're strong," he says, "but not bright. We had tribes; pride. Now no more. All tribes brought to great meeting, then Sobek come. Sobek god. Sobek strongest of all tribes; all chiefs and elders submit to him. Chomba not like Sobek; Chomba exiled for heresy."

"Sobek... He is a god?"

"Of my people," Comba says with a nod.

"Well, would you be willing to return with me?"

"If with you, yes," Chomba says. "Not alone. Sacrifice to Sobek if alone. Made into not-living. Serve Sobek in death. That why Chomba no like Sobek; not right to make dead slaves."

Kaito doesn't like the sound of that, but he's willing to bring Chomba along and keep him protected. He pats Chomba on the shoulder and promises him that he will be alright.

He goes and finds Turana. "No matter what happens, stay hidden," he tells her. "Only appear if you hear the password Snickerdoodle."

She giggles a bit. "Funny password," she says. "Alright. You have my word." She vanishes in a cloud of grey smoke.

Kaito places the Staff of Raiden upon the hull and whisks them away to Earthrealm. It is night in Japan, in the lake near the Shirai Ryu temple. As they appear, advance sentries of black and yellow-garbed ninjas near the boat before Kaito walks to the railing, displaying his yellow sash, indicative of his honorary membership within the clan.

It is not long before Kaito is brought before the grandmaster himself, Hanzo Hasashi. He explains the situation to the former specter and asks for his assistance.

"I don't know who is targetting Yanake, but they are ninja-like assassins," he tells him. "I am asking for your help because I think you and your new clan could best handle this problem."

"I am not very familiar with this territory in Outworld," Hanzo says. "However, I believe this could be good training for some of my clan. I can spare myself, Takeda, Fox, and twenty warriors. That should be more than enough."

"Thank you, Master Hasashi," Kaito says with a bow. "My ship is ready to transport you when you are fully prepared."

In less than an hour, Scorpion gathers his warriors. Takeda is excited to get to see Kaito again, and introduces him to his friend Fox, another member of the Shirai Ryu. Along with Hanzo and the others, they board the ship and briefly integrate with the varied crew of the Dragon Wing as Kaito transports them to Outworld.

Once within Outworld, Kaito and the others take a few longboats to the shore and march towards Xun-Koto. Outside of its gates, Scorpion tells Fox and Takeda to split off with the others into teams of eleven each and spread out amongst the city, unseen and unheard.

"If these assassins are in the city, it would not do for us to be seen before we see them," Scorpion explains to Kaito. "Let them think it is just myself."

Kaito and Hanzo enter Yanake's palace, where they discover Liu Kang speaking with none other than Bo' Rai Cho. Upon seeing Kaito, the old Outworlder master approaches him and throws him into a powerful hug. "Kaito! Look at you! So young yet, eh? Are you sure you're not a Mortal Kombat champion as well?" he asks, nudging him in the ribs. "Good to have you back among the waking, hahah!"

"Lady Yanake has retired for the evening," Liu tells Kaito.

"It's wonderful to see you again, Master Bo'," Kaito says to him. "I came here with Liu in the hopes of visiting your school, but something has come up."

"Yes," Bo' nods, "so I have been told. I came with all haste down my mountain to ensure that I reached you in time, Kaito. I have something for you."

He takes out a small canteen of leather and wood. "I really don't have the time for a drink, as much as I would like to," Kaito says.

"Not for me, for you!" Bo' insists. "This is a brew of mine that I created in response to the rise of treacherous sorcerers! Drink this, and you will be free from all forms of mind control, immune!"

Kaito takes hold of it. "Thank you... But how did you test this?"

"I use it to render me sober when I have had too much, but the drink continues to call to me!" Bo' says with a laugh.

"Damn, then it must work!" Kaito says, slipping it into a pocket. "Thank you again." He turns to the exit. "Hey, by the way, how's Kung Lao's daughter doing at your school?"

"She is a fine student," Bo' replies, "but her father is a rather touchy subject... I would be wary of approaching her about it until she is on friendly terms. She is deadly with her shapeshifting qiang."

"Thanks for the head's up," Kaito says, before nodding at Liu and Hanzo. "I'll share a drink with you next time," he calls out to Master Bo' as he leaves.

Once more on the Dragon Wing, Kaito and his allies set sail northwards. They make anchor along the coast and Kaito prepares himself for the journey into the desert.

He, Kitana, Jade, Chomba and Vapor climb into a longboat and row to the shore, where not far from the coast the desert begins. Kaito remembers this being a desolate, drained land, a harsh terrain of snake people and sun-bleached bones, so that is why he is exceptionally surprised when they come over a large dune to behold a sprawling, beautiful landscape of lush green foliage with a city of marble and stone built into it. The sun rises over the horizon as they observe the incredible city, and at its heart is a massive pyramid; the very same one that Turana herself once guarded.

"This can't be," Kaito says softly. "It wasn't like this before..."

He can spy a large lake at its heart, glistening blue. The plants and trees around it seem to defy the desert's very existence, growing strong and healthy.

"Was it like this when you left?" Kaito asks Chomba.

"Water here and there, rivers, some trees," Chomba says. "Not like this. Not forest. Not city."

"Perhaps it was recently built," Kitana suggests. "But the labor involved would have been massive in scale..."

"Life cannot just spring up from lifelessness," Kaito says. "The Wellspring of Shun-Kuto was drained... Piped towards this desert. I can only think that this must be why..."

As they watch the city, they notice a sudden group leave and begin travelling in their direction. They are led by a man in black and gold armor with an elaborate helm greatly resembling Egyptian motifs; his guards are more simply dressed but also resemble ancient footsoldiers from the same land.

"I think they know we're here," Kaito says as he stands up. The man and his guards stop a distance away and he calls to them.

"Greetings, honored guest Akayama Kaito," the man shouts before bowing. All of his guards bow as well, kneeling with their spears pointing up to the sky. "I am Brother-Captain Haka, loyal servant to the city of Nemsai. I am here to welcome you to our city on the behalf of Lady Turana, Woman of Snakes, Bringer of Water and Arch-Sorceress of Lord Anubis, God of the Dead."

Kaito isn't sure he likes any of what he just heard. But Arch-Sorceress of Lord Anubis, God of the Dead... he's defnitely sure he doesn't like the sound of that.

As Kitana, Jade and Chomba rise alongside him, Haka calls out, "Lady Turana extended invitation to you and you alone, Akayama Kaito---none may enter the city of Nemsai alongside you."

The Brother-Captain bows his head. "I meant no offense, Akayama Kaito. They may enter with you, but the holy temple where Lady Turana resides is for those she deems worthy only. Your allies must wait outside of it."

Kaito looks at Kitana, who nods. "We must accept some of their laws, at least initially," she advises.

Together, the four of them (though Vapor follows behind, unseen by all) go to meet the envoy and he leads them into the grand, beautiful city. They pass underneath a massive archway, flanked on either side by golden reliefs of pharaoh-like beings. Statues of jackal-headed warriors line the street, and once they pass into the city itself, Kaito sees people have gathered on the sides of the main street to look upon them.

Kaito looks and sees the people---Outworlders---as citizens of this large city. They speak amongst themselves. He is surprised to see that they look rather well off, wearing nice white robes and toga-like clothing. He looks up to the rooftops of the fascinating buildings and discovers serpent people---just like he saw when he was here last---coiled around spires and ceiling domes, staring down with curious eyes.

They are brought before a massive temple, the ancient pyramid that Kaito once entered. Large statues of sphinxes can be seen outside of it, and Kaito cannot help but be reminded that this was the spot where he first met Turana so long ago. There are guards here, dressed in brilliant gold, along with larger crocodilian vanguards with massive axes. Chomba looks at them nervously.

Haka turns around. "You may enter," he says to Kaito, "But the others may not."

Kaito looks at Kitana and Jade. "If I'm not back in an hour, assume the worst," he says. They both nod and step back as Kaito steps onto the stairs leading up to the temple's main entrance.

Once within, he finds the interior completely renovated, with fresh paintings and statues along with many furnishings, such as carpet and plush rugs. His nostils are filled with the scent of incense, and strange exotic music reaches his ears.

He enters a central, grand chamber. Massive braziers of fires light up the golden walls, covered in hieroglyphics depicting ancient figures and animals. Within this chamber are priest-girls, wearing white robes, who play soft music but do not make eye contact with him. They lay upon large crimson pillows and drink from pitchers of fine wine.

But his eyes are drawn to the center of the chamber, to a golden throne. There, a beautiful woman sits, her body covered in an elegant white cloth with golden necklaces, earings and bracelets. A thin crown of gold adorns her head, and her piercing gaze is highlighted by the black paint around her eyes. Two large cats, panthers, sit obediently at her side as two more priest-girls use large leaves to fan her. Around her shoulders, strung about the throne, is a large serpent.

She is incredibly beautiful, but she is not Turana. Not the one he knew.

She rises to her feet as he enters and looks at her. Her eyes soften and she breaks into a smile, her hands cupping her mouth in happiness. She descends the stairs and approaches him slowly, looking almost on the verge of tears.

"Kaito..." she says, holding out her arms as if to welcome him in a hug.

"Kaito... I am Turana," she says with a smile, holding a hand to her heart. "I know that I don't look the same, but... It's me."

"That's an understatement," he replies. "What is this? What is all of this?"

She brings her hands together. "This... is for you," she says, confusing him. "I knew that one day you would come back to me, Kaito. I knew it."

She rapidly closes the distance, and before he can stop her, she throws him into a hug, wrapping her arms tightly around him. "At last..." she says with a happy sigh. "At last, you've come back to me..."

Kaito grabs her by the shoulders and forces her back a bit, staring into her eyes. "I came because I was invited," he says with a serious tone. "By a talking snake... that bit Mileena."

Her smile fades. "Oh... of course. I sent it."

Kaito drops his arms. "Well? What's going on? What's the deal?"

She doesn't answer the question. Instead, she studies his face, her smile slowly returning. "You're just as I remembered you," she says warmly. "Just as I dreamed you were every night these twenty years..."

"Turana, answer me."

She reaches for his hands to take them into hers, running her thumbs over his palms. "You don't know how long I've waited... It's been two decades, but it feels like so much more... Every night was a century of pain, every day when I awoke from my dreams hurt only more and more..."

"I did not kill her!" she insists. "I loved her as a mother would love any child! I fed her, educated her, protected her from danger."

"And then betrayed her," Kaito says with an accusatory tone. "You stole her body."

"She gave it willingly," Turana says. "I never killed her. Raiden told you this, didn't he? He would lie and twist words; he's done nothing but that since he sealed you in that chamber and stole your power for himself."

"He was there when I awoke," Kaito replies, ignoring her assertions about the thunder god. "He told me what he knew."

"Well, he knows nothing," she replies, turning back and heading to her throne. She suddenly stops halfway and returns, grabbing his hands. "I want to show you something," she insists. "Please. You must see."

Reluctantly, Kaito goes along with her as she takes his hand and pulls him towards a hallway. As she walks down, she says, "This is what I am most proud of. What I have wanted to share with you."

As they walk, he asks, "Where is the girl?"

"She is safe," Turana is quick to reply in a manner which answers absolutely nothing. "I don't know why Raiden lied to you. I would never kill my own body, or Nadeen."

Kaito then asks, "Why did you try to steal my body? Raiden stopped you, didn't he?"

She stops and looks back at him. "I wanted to bring you here," she says. "Where I could help you. Find your soul and bring it back."

She continues walking, pulling him along, until he sees daylight once more. She takes him to a shaded balcony overlooking a beautiful courtyard, with green grass and fountains of purest blue water. The architecture here is immaculate, and the beauty is breathtaking.

Kaito keeps a hand on the drink in his pocket.

"This is what I have worked towards," she says, letting go of his hand and walking to a comfortable seat with a white cloth draped over it. "This has been my work, my dream... returning life to this horrible, blighted land, giving its people hope, ruling benevolently."

"Ruling?" Kaito repeats her words. "The Turana I knew had no aspirations of ruling anyone."

She turns back to him. "I was foolish," she says. "I didn't know what I could use my power for. I returned here and I brought life to this land, I used my magic to build this city and everyone within lives a life of peace."

"You drained the Wellspring of Shun-Kuto," Kaito says. "I encountered a merchant selling bottled water from it. That's what led me to Outworld." He steps forward. "Turana, tell me what happened to Phlox."

She averts her eyes. "I... did what was necessary."

"That's a lie," Kaito says. "You did what you felt was necessary, but it wasn't. You turned him to stone."

"He refused to share the water. How else was I to return life to this land?"

"Why did you?" Kaito asks. "Why even return here in the first place?"

She looks back into his eyes. "My grief was terrible," she explains. "I wanted you back. I came here seeking knowledge of how to do so. I found the snake tribes, and I became their leader with my new magic, my sorcery. I united them and then I met Lord Anubis. He appeared before me and spoke. He was the master of the one who had ensalved me, Sumancothep, the mummy sorcerer you destroyed. Anubis was impressed that I had returned and grown in power; he made me an offer. I became his Arch-Sorceress and was given new power, amazing power! In return, I took up the task he gave me---return life to this land. And so I did. I have served my lord faithfully and brought beauty, life and prosperity to this wasteland, I freed its people from hunger, starvation, drought."

"By draining the wellspring," Kaito says. "But why sell the water?"

"I never did," she says. "I hired a group of merchants to assist me in building the pipe that led to the desert. In exchange, I gave them a small amount of the water for them to do as they pleased. I'm not surprised that they would sell it for profit."

She looks out at the beautiful courtyard. "But Kaito... Look at what I have acheived here. Isn't it gorgeous? Isn't it wonderful?"

"Was it worth what you did to Phlox? What you did to Nadeen?"

She lowers her eyes. "I know that I have made... difficult decisions." She approaches him and reaches for his hand. "Every step of the way, I questioned my actions. I thought to myself, 'What would Kaito think? What would he do? What would he say?' But I kept going, because I knew thar one day you would come back to me, just as Lord Anubis promised."

"Was that what your deal with him was? To bring me back?"

"Every day away from you, every night... I never knew it when we travelled together, but in those final moments, when Shao Kahn was going to strike me down, I realized it..."

Kaito kneels down and holds her close. She continues to tremble and sob softly but she slowly leans against him, finding comfort in his embrace. Kaito leans back and plants a kiss on her forehead. She gasps in surprise and tenses up a bit before practically melting in his arms at the contact. She sighs happily as he pulls away.

"T-thank you," she says. "Not what I... had hoped for, but... That was nice..."

"Turana, if you want a true kiss from me, you have to earn it," Kaito tells her. "You have to help me fix everything."

"I will," she says. "Kaito, I love you, I--"

Just then, Kaito hears a strange noise, like a distant clap of thunder. The wind around them picks up a bit and the sky begins to darken.

"What the hell is that?" Kaito says as Turana begins to suddenly move away. "Turana?"

"He's coming," she says. All around the courtyard, priest-maidens begin to assemble, getting on their knees and bowing their heads before an invisible entity. Kaito watches as Turana stands up and strides to the edge of the stone platform and looks out into the courtyard.

The sky is filled with dark clouds now, swirling high above them like a tornado is about to appear. Lightning and thunder roil as the wind continues to pick up; Turana's cloth robes flow about her legs. She holds up her hands to the sky and closes her eyes.

Before Kaito's eyes, three massive figures descend from the sky above. They are each somewhere around ten or twelve feet tall, physically imposing and powerful.

The figure on the left is a woman; a cat with dark fur. She is dressed elegantly, in gold and black.

The figure on the right is a hulking brute; a massive crocodile-man with golden headdress and a massive axe. He exudes raw strength, and primal elemental power.

But the figure in the center is, undoubtedly, the most powerful of all. He stands the tallest, with jet-black skin and the head of a jackal, with piercing yellow eyes. In one hand he carries a massive scepter, and he too wears black and gold, with a golden helm upon his doglike head, resembling that of an ancient pharoah.

Kaito recognizes the center figure from his brief studies into Egyptian mythology--he is Anubis. Unquestionably the same one that Turana is now the Arch-Sorceress of.

They touch down onto the ground and Turana immediately kneels.

"Welcome, Lord Anubis," she says, her voice still somewhat shakey. "You honor us eternally with your presence."

He does not look at her. Instead, he looks directly past her, straight at Kaito.

He points a large, black finger.

"I have seen you," he says. "Long ago, in the realm of Duat, you slew a servant of mine. The previous lord of this land, Sumancothep. I turned my gaze upon you and you fled."

The cat woman suddenly points her hand at Kaito as the crocodile roars. "Know who you are speaking to, whelp! You shall kneel before the God of Death!"

Anubis holds up his hand and the others regain their composure. "This is the first one who has spoken to us in millenia of the lands of Egypt, apart from Arch-Sorceress Turana. Tell me, human, what do they say of us there now?"

"You're mythology," Kaito says. "The gods of Egypt, and the kingdom they once were the gods of, aren't really around anymore. You are... well, gone from modern Earthrealm. Studied by historians, but that's it; just mythology."

"Heresy," the cat woman mutters. "They have forgotten us after all we gave them?"

"They are short-lived things," Anubis says to her. "It is to be expected of lesser beings. They lose sight of what truly is if they are not constantly reminded of their place."

Kaito's brow furrows a bit. He's not so sure he likes the tone from these gods.

The jackalheaded god turns his attention back to Kaito. "Now, the question remains what to do with you."

"Aaru was our domain," Anubis says. "It was conquered through ten tournaments of Mortal Kombat and merged with Outworld. This great desert is all that remains of our once great paradise."

"The remaining gods were all slain," the cat god continues. "Now we are all that remain."

"With fewer gods, we wield greater power," Anubis says. "Now, we share the domains that many once ruled individually."

"Well, glad to hear you got promoted," Kaito says. "But I just came to speak with Turana. Oh, and you didn't bring me back from the dead, by the way---I got better on my own."

Turana picks up her head. "Lord Anubis?"

The jackalheaded god looks at her. "He is alive," he says simply. "Our agreement remains, Turana."

Before Kaito can speak some more, Anubis raises his staff and the three of them raise up to the heavens. Kaito watches them vanish in the dark clouds and all returns to normal.

Slowly, Turana picks herself up, looking away. "I... Did not want you to see that," she says.

"What?" Kaito asks.

"My service to Anubis. I thought that you would be ashamed of me for returning here..." She turns to him. "But I have such freedom now. I am no longer a servant as I was; bound for centuries. Now I am like a queen."

Kaito watches as she stands up and looks at him. "And... You can help. You restored Edenia!"

"Woah, woah, hold on," Kaito says. "I promised the edenian royal family that I wouldn't restore any more realms or get involved with inter-realm politics anymore."

"But perhaps you can convince Kotal Kahn to release control of Aaru from Outworld," Turana says hopefully. "Then our task would be complete, and I could return the water to the Wellspring of Shun-Kuto."

"Why not do that in the first place to help restore Phlox and start fixing what you broke?"

She averts her eyes. "I... can't," she replies. "I brought the water here. The gods will not let me return it." They dart back to his gaze. "But if Aaru were restored, I could return them then! Aaru was a paradise. It wouldn't need the water."

Kaito runs a hand through his hair.

The reason Jerrod and Sindell didn't want us getting involved was because they couldn't be sure of the allegiance of any restored realm, like if they would go and stir up some shit. She leads him back into an inner chamber of the temple, down a large staircase, into a massive chamber that glows green from the hallway. As soon as Kaito enters, he knows exactly what he is looking at.

A soulnado.

"Turana, what--"

"I know what you may be thinking," she says. "But this soulnado is used for good. All the souls of those who die within Anubis' control are sent here, to be held until they are judged in the Hall of Two Truths."

"What is that?"

"When a soul here, they are judged in his Hall of Two Truths. If their heart is lighter than a feather of the goddess Ma'at, they ascend to a higher existence. If it is not, and they lived a life of wickedness, it is thrown to be consumed by Anubis' pet, Ammit."

"And how is this a good thing?" Kaito asks. "Since when is a heart lighter than a feather?"

"The scales measure goodness within one's soul," she says to him. "Anubis is a benevolent god of death."

Kaito isn't so sure he believes her. She approaches the soulnado and holds up her hands, summoning its guardian.

Kaito's eyes widen as a soul construct emerges from within, much like Ermac---only withered, looking like a mummy, with golden finery draped about him.

"Our strongest souls are given a chance to live again in service to Anubis in many ways," she says. "If they wish to not be judged, or they fear death too greatly, he gives them another chance in unlife; service through death instead of judgment."

Kaito looks up at the soul construct, who floats menacingly above the ground. Turana turns around. "I have kept Nadeen's soul safely housed here... within my own creation."

"Nadeen willingly gave her body to me," Turana says. "She was deeply devoted to me. I felt terrible, at first, for abandoning who I was... But in time, I came to accept it."

Kaito watches her move to a nearby wall.

"And what about your old body? The sphinx body? Your true self?"

"My true self is my soul, Kaito... I know that you may not have accepted me in this form yet, but in time you will, I promise you. Just as I have."

She moves a hand to a brick in the wall and pushes it, activating a mechanism that causes two massive doors to open along the wall. Kaito and Ermac both look on as a massive figure is revealed in a hidden chamber.

Turana's sphinx body, sitting in a chamber surrounded by blue flames. It is wearing a gigantic, golden mask upon its head.

"My body is not without age, but I have lived for centuries," Turana says. "The mask upon it preserves it even further... I studied some of the magic of the Jinsei Chamber, and was able to replicate a small part of it within the mask."

Kaito looks up at the glowing blue eyes of the sphinx's cold, giant mask.

"I can control my old body due to the magic I have placed on the mask. But without it, it is merely a husk, a body with no soul."

"So, you get her body, and she gets no body," Kaito says. "Well, except one shared with ten thousand other souls. Turana, seriously---why would you think I am okay with all of this?"

Turana turns around. "Kaito, I told you she gave it to me willingly. I have ensured that she is safe; her eternal soul is protected."

"Protected and your servant, you keep forgetting to leave out."

Turana gives him a more serious look. "I spent many years mastering sorcery. I have used my powers for good, no matter what you think." She crosses her arms and looks away.

"You used them to create a city, alright, and bring life to the land---and you put yourself on top and rule over them."

She walks towards him and hugs him. "All I ever wanted was to be with you," she says softly. "And all of this, it just... It grew so out of control..."

Her shoulders slump a bit. "I... I wanted to wait, you know. I spent centuries of servitude, surely two decades wouldn't have killed me. But I wanted to bring you back, Kaito, I wanted it so badly, and I... Anubis promised me that you would return, and here you are."

"Anubis didn't bring me back," Kaito says. "I had... a weird time where I was. I don't want to talk about it because none of it really happened, sort of."

She blinks a few times. "What?"

"Nothing, it was just a dream. The point is that when I woke up and I heard what you had done, I was... I don't know. Sad, angry, disappointed... and now that I've seen you and seen even more things, I... I still don't know how to feel."

She moves her arms to his neck and places her hands on his cheeks. "I do," she whispers, leaning up to kiss him.

Kaito stops her. "No," he says. "I told you that you need to earn it. I don't know if I can still trust you, and you can start by fixing some of the damage you've done."

She is saddened, but nods. "Alright... For you, anything."

She steps back and places her hands together, conjuring forth some magical energy. She summons a bottole of clear liquid, which she grabs and hands to him. "This is the cure for Mileena."

He takes it. "Alright... this is a start." He slides it into a pouce in his pants.

"Kaito, I have to know something," she says as he looks back up. "Do you love her?"

He pauses, considering his response. "She and I are close. But we haven't said 'I love you' to each other."
