You know that feeling where time supposedly passes quickly when you’re having fun? The kind that happens when you’re either playing video games or surfing the internet?

Apparently, your taste in fun seems to have been somewhat distorted. Because four more weeks of hellish training just go by like that. Snap, zip, whatever. It only seemed like a few days ago when the facility was attacked by demons, and Commander Sparda’s words left your teeth on edge. Human perception is funny like that.

But at any rate, it seems that your training is being cut short. Last night, Alger said something about the bigwigs in D.C. wanting more manpower on the streets due to the annual rise in demonic incursions. There’s just something about the seasons of summer and winter that apparently brought out the crazy in demons. All of the Divisions across the country were deploying teams throughout the states.

Since you’ve actually experienced a full-on demon raid, Alger was willing to let you go into the field a little early than he was hoping for. Regardless, a total of six weeks in Camp Cocytus completely molded the five of your group from inexperienced rookies into somewhat hardened Devil Summoners.

>Your level has increased to 15!
>You may now fuse and recruit demons up to your current level!

You know this more than anyone else. After all, it’s only been four more weeks, but you can definitely feel that you’ve become more…

Think about it like this anon.

Combat proficiency is all well and good but a lot of that can be supplemented via good gear and tactics. Charisma and Knowledge you can't do as much.

Also where does most of the power or 'strength' of a Devil Summoner come from? His demons. And you get those through negotiation and fusion.

Maybe it’s the food, maybe it’s the workout regimen, or maybe it’s the presence of your friends beside you as the days go by. Whatever it is, you find yourself becoming more eloquent in speaking and communicating with others, be they demons or humans otherwise.

But whenever you weren’t sweating it out and watering the countryside with your blood, salt and tears, you’ve also been picking up some practical knowledge in-between calisthenics during downtime or other activities.

Since you’re about to receive your first mission, Alger’s decided to give all of you the opportunity to sleep in. It’s definitely a welcome change from waking up at an ungodly hour in the morning. The sight of the sun already somewhat higher in the sky than you’re used to feels very strange.

One warm shower and eggs-and-bacon breakfast with the crew later, you’ve all assembled in the briefing room. Alger’s already there, dressed in civilian clothing: white cotton shirt, khaki cargo pants and a set of sneakers.

The sight of him dressed so casually and relaxed puts all of you off edge. With a roll of his eyes, your commander gestures for all of you to take your seats. Switching the lights off and hitting the projector switch, he sits himself down on top of the desk as the machine whirs to life.

Alger says, “This is going to be your first official mission out in the field. The folks back in D.C.’s given us one of the low-end ones that they think is challenging but not too dangerous for agents of your level. You should be more than adequately prepared to deal with the current situation at hand.”

The machine finally brings into view an image of the state of Delaware, and he continues speaking, “As sad as it is, drowning during the summer break is a common occurrence in our country’s beaches. What isn’t uncommon is having seven of them happen in the same location over the course of several weeks.

“This wouldn’t be something we’d be taking a look at if it weren’t for the fact that Coast Guard hasn’t detected any sharks or other mundane marine predators lurking within fifty miles of the beach. This is where we come in.

“Your main objective is to discover the cause of the drowning. Investigate the locals, dig around the rumor mills, and when you come across the demon behind it, kill the sunovabitch with everything you've got.

“Do you have any questions? Because now's the time to ask them before we hit the road."

>Write-in.

OMG!!!!! you mentioned my state! This is actually really exciting. Thank you.
>>
>>45060479

Your state has beautiful beaches. Shame they have to run red with blood...
>>
>>45060338

You raise your hand, remembering what examples of coroner’s reports you’ve studied in medical school. “The bodies weren’t eaten? Just drowned and left until discovered? What did the coroner’s report have to say?”

He grimaces. “Partially eaten, and then found washed up on the beach in the morning. But the big problem is that we can’t match up the bite marks to the ones we found in the report since, for the most part, oceanic demons have teeth similar to that of sharks. Coupled with the Coast Guard failing to find anything, you can see why we were called in to deal with this.

"I'd show you images, but considering the fact that you've only just had breakfast..."

The sentence remains unfinished, but it gives you an unpleasant feeling as your mind conjures up images of the extent of the damage.

Even in the dim light of the room, you can see Fitz’s eyes narrowing. To hear her voice suddenly shift into that of a no-nonsense police officer proves to be quite the juxtaposition to the temperamental woman you’ve gotten to know. “Do the victims have anything in common? Where they were found, any unusual markings around the site?”

The next slide shows headshots of the victims. And as far as you can tell, none of them have anything in common with each other. All of them are of different ages, with one at least forty five and the youngest at thirteen. Different races, different genders, different last names, different addresses; hell even three of them were out-of-state tourists. There was nothing within their physical and biological descriptors that showed anything in common.

“Random victims,” Alger growls, “Which means that whatever’s causing this is killing indiscriminately not unlike a wild beast. It’s probably the one of the most dangerous of motivations for the demons we go up against.”

“We are so ‘Men in Black’ right now,” Brady whispers in a quiet sotto before raising his voice for the Major, “What’s our cover story, then?”

He coughs politely before passing around folders to each of you. “You’re all old college friends on summer vacation, staying at one of the rental beach houses for a few days of good times and bad decisions. And before you ask, I’m going to be staying at a separate condo from yours to monitor your performance.”

“So…we’re being graded for this?” Victoria tilts her head in confusion. “And how come you’re just…well, pardon my bluntness, commander, sitting on the bench?”

“It’s just as you said, Yamane. I’m the Commander of Division Four,” Alger states in a placid tone, “I can’t be expected to go on every mission that my teams are assigned to.”

“You’re the Rookie Team, not the only one I’ve got. This one time, I’m making an exception since you haven’t completed the ideal amount of training. But after this, you’re going to be on your own for the most part, conducting the missions that get sent our way. Someone else is going to be overseeing you in my stead.”

He hops off of the desk, with his shoes making a squeaking noise as they hit the tile floors. “Alright, I think we’ve had enough time to cover the essentials. The rest of the information is in your folders, which I’m expecting you to read during the trip. Won’t take longer than twenty minutes front-to-back. Your clothing and equipment have already been packed in the car. Let’s roll out.”

With that, the lights come on, signaling the end of the briefing.

Twenty minutes later find you in front of a very familiar black Cadillac as you all clamber into the seats. But just as you’re about to enter, you feel someone tap you on the shoulder. You turn around to find Kristoff standing behind you.

“Don’t let Alger get you down, Rookie,” He says pleasantly. “Things have been stressful ever since the call from D.C. came for Rookie Team to mobilize. Besides, you’re going to the beach. My team’s first mission was to hunt a demon in a backwater swamp that stank to high heaven. You’ve got it real good compared to us. So good luck out there, okay?

You smile pleasantly and nod. “Thanks for the support. Got any last-minute tips for the rookie?”
“Just a few. First, if something feels wrong, report it as soon as possible. Second, loose lips sink ships. Third, the team is everything; let nothing split your party down the middle. Fourth, don’t take anything at face value; always look for hidden clues.”

You raise your eyebrows. “That’s quite the intimidating list.”

“It’s what’s gonna keep you alive and in once piece,” Kristoff says with a smile, offering out a hand. “Happy hunting.”

You shake on it, and climb into the car. Alger’s punching coordinates in the GPS, with no one sitting in the shotgun seat. The rest of you are all piled into the back, with the only seat left behind your commander. Sighing, you strap yourself in as the car rumbles to life.

Within a few minutes, the Camp Cocytus is nothing but a distant white blip in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains. You almost want to shed a tear. Victoria looks like she’s about to.
In the interest of following orders, you decide to leaf through the folder Alger gave you.

“…governor calls for Coast Guard…citizens fear closure of the Boardwalk…tourist revenue in danger of plummeting…local Greek life events to be canceled…”

It’s a mouthful, but you manage to stomach it without too much effort. By the time you’ve finished, you’re already on the main road, with the GPS estimating at least eight hours before you make it to Lewes, Delaware.

You’ve got some free time on your hands. You should…

It's 4Chan specifically catered for the Task Force, with all the boards available for the agents all around the world to talk about a wide variety of topics. Problem is, it's gone to hell since it is what it is, filled with threads and posts full of:

>You will never buy Apsaras ice cream.
>Implying Queen Mab isn't a bitch.
>I want to cum inside Moh Shuvuu.
>Requesting pics of Angel from the drawfags in Japan.

But when Human Resources tried to get rid of it, there was a global backlash among the agents against its removal.

Since then, they've decided to leave it as it is, only monitoring for sensitive information leaks. Other than that, it's free reign.

After staring at a screen the size of your hand for the past hour, you decide to take a nap to rest your eyes. Straining them is the last thing that you need right now. You’ve had enough headaches as a kid staring at the car’s movie screen or your Gameboy during long road trips across the Eastern Seaboard.

And you don’t even have any Tylenol. It’s probably for the best.
You leave the chat with a last reply of “ttfn” and do your best to make yourself feel comfortable. From the way the screen is rolling down at a fast rate, it seems that the shit flinging has yet to end. Poor MacKay. Guy’s trying to restore peace in a literature debate. That never goes well.

Eventually, you find your sweet spot. Ignoring the feeling of the seatbelt strap pressing against your cheek, you slowly feel yourself drowning out the rumble of the engine, the roar of the highway…

…only to find yourself barefoot in a land of fog, wet soil and the soft scent of hyacinth flowers.

You can’t see jack shit. Sticking your arm out only gets you at least two feet of vision. Well, as far as a dream goes, you shouldn’t be surprised. At least this is a more welcome sight than the one of the clowns and the animated sushi chasing you through an abandoned hospital-

Hold on…this all feels very familiar.

“Well, well, well…,” A silky voice purrs into your ear. You can’t even jump in surprise as something wraps its arms around you and presses warm, yielding flesh against your back. “A visitor, here of all places. And one that I haven’t seen before. Not that I can claim to have a large number of patrons calling upon me for many, many years years…ah, but I digress. A visitor is still a visitor, one welcome here in this land of forgotten things.”

You try to swallow the sudden lump that’s formed in your throat. Emphasis on try. You feel a nailed finger trace your Adam’s apple as it bobs up and down nervously, much to the apparent amusement of whatever’s holding onto you.

At least, that’s what you think. All you can be certain of is the overpowering scent of flowers and the fact that a very, very female body is pressing against you. But that breathy chuckle…oh, that had to be amusement. There’s no other way you can describe it.

“Um…hello?” you manage to get out.

“Not the most eloquent of greetings,” the voice seems to pout, “But acceptable given the long absence I’ve had to endure. But perhaps I’m too used to having mortals exalt my name in hedonistic abandon. Times certainly have changed…oh my…what’s this?”

Meep.

Her voice takes on a curious tone, but it’s coy and sultry in its inflection. “Child born of Adam’s seed and Eve’s flesh…tell me, am I inconveniencing you? Discomforting you in any way?”

You take several moments to clear out your throat, and try to adjust the seam of your pants. “Yes…no!...yes…I’m…I’m not,” you admit after a few hesitant starts. “I’m just confused. I just…suddenly woke up here after deciding to take a nap…and I’m not sure how I got here in the first place.”

“So a wanderer then,” the voice concludes, retracting her hand, much to your relief. “A wanderer in this limbo between inexistence and existence. Now that is certainly interesting….most interesting indeed. The thought of these qualities to let you cross between worlds…” She pauses to audibly moisten her lips, and her voice takes on a predatory tone. “Is so tantalizingly appealing.”

That doesn’t really explain anything. Right now, your confusion is slowly becoming anxiety by the second. And you figure that said anxiety is gonna leap straight into full-blown terror. What the fuck is happening?!

For an instant, you feel the presence remove itself from you completely, before something pushes you to the floor with a staggering amount of force. The impact knocks the wind out of you. Whatever she is, she hits harder than Fitz.

You collapse to the wet soil as a figure encircled by mist and fog straddles your waist.“It’s been such a long time since the flesh of another has laid next to mine,” you hear her murmur as dainty fingers walk their way up your stomach, your chest, your throat, your lips.

They stop at your cheek, cupping your face as you feel someone’s breath upon your lips. “Ah, but the smell of a woman clings to you. Not that it’s ever stopped me from taking what I desire-”

The voice suddenly gasps, and you feel the presence move away from your face. But you don’t even have time to sigh in relief before fog roils and writhes, and you find a pair of hands squeezing your throat.

“Tell me,” the voice hisses venomously as her grip on your neck grows tighter, more painful by the second. “Who is the one that Touched you? This…this is not your first time here. I should have known. Her smell clings onto your soul like an overflowing cesspool of hyacinth and nectar, so sickeningly sweet. Tell me now, and I’ll make it a pleasurable end.”

You struggle to draw breath as you see your vision beginning to blacken, to tunnel. Oxygen deprivation to the brain…inability to expel carbon dioxide from lungs…this is a slow and painful death, one that you

But there’s still time. You have one breath left, one breath to do whatever you want. To talk, to struggle, to live, to choose.

To live is to struggle. Such is the human condition. That is the way it has always been since the dawn of your species, and will continue to be so until the end of time. It is what your father did, and his father before him did, and down the line of your ancestors to the when man first took up arms against nature’s creatures to survive.

You are Adrian Brown, a human being.

And you make your choice.

You choose to live.

You choose to struggle.

You choose to fight.

The hands that were previously trying to pry the unseen pressure at your neck stop their activity. Instead, you maneuver your legs, remembering a technique that Alger demonstrated when you were on the wrestling mats. You tuck your chin inwards, raise your shoulders to support your neck, and thrust your legs out against the entity with all the force you can muster.

Instead of taking "the best of three rolls", I've been taking "the first three rolls".

Somehow, it works. You don’t know how, but it works. You push the weight off of your body, practically sending the entity flying off of you. The pressure on your neck disappears along with the weight, allowing you to suck in sweet, sweet air.

But you don’t have time to rest. It was just a temporary reprieve. This fight was nowhere over.
You scramble to your feet, searching for the presence as you recover your breath…there! You see it clearly…or as clear as it can possibly be. There’s no ignoring the feminine outline in the fog that’s slowly picking itself off of the ground.

The outline of the head turns to you, and the fog just above the neck parts in mimicry of a human mouth. “Of all the humans I have mounted…” she slowly says in what could almost be genuine intrigue, “You are the first one to throw me off and resist my touch. Just when I thought you were nothing more than a mere puppet…no empty mortal can accomplish something like that.”

The figure slowly starts moving towards you, swaying its hips in an exaggerated gait. “At first, you were unlike any mortal I have ever met before, easily replaceable across the years to come…but now, the decision has been made. From this moment onward, you now have the privilege of belonging to me now.”

“I respectfully decline, and wish to present it,” you slowly say as you build your momentum, and push off like a runner, “In the form of my fist in your face.”

The laughter that exits her mouth is low, sultry and full of carnal instinct. “You may be the first one to actually throw off my touch, but I have had thousands of years in bending mortals to my will. Come to me,” she says, opening her arms wide. “There is no need for conflict. Place your head within my bosom and know what it is to love an existence greater than yours.”

“By the way, you've been doing it wrong. My name isn’t ‘mortal’.” You stop just in front of her, rear your fist back in a haymaker punch, and drive it into the mass of swirling fog where her head is. “My name is Adrian, and to you, I say fuck you.”

There’s a moment where the fog seems to resist your attack, but whatever barrier is present bends, yields and then completely gives way before your attack. Your fist drives directly into the mist, parting it as a hot knife through butter. The figure dissolves, the fog unraveling like clothing with its seam removed, until there is nothing left but formless mist once more.

You pull back your fist, collapsing on the moist soil. You don’t care that the dampness is seeping into your jeans. More than anything else, this is what you wanted: just a brief reprieve from the craziness around you.

You feel the familiar tug of the fog calling you back to the real world, but not before the earth beneath you starts to shake violently. Startled, you immediately scramble towards your feet as the soil where you sat buckles, and collapses underneath your feet.

“Do you know what you have done…” the voice suddenly says, echoing from the abyss in the earth. “You…you have rejected me, the great 8$jaCeKahPzv0M2x-4Fuq2ltr…no one, not even the gods…has ever done such a thing…”

In spite of the absence of a figure, and the clear and very recent memory of driving her off…the voice remains, in all of its carnal and yearning tone. The worst thing about this scenario is? You can’t tell the emotion that’s behind the voice.

The fog writhes, boils and billows out towards you in thousands of out-reaching hands. “You have made a very grave mistake, mortal…” the voice moans throatily, “…no, Adrian…my Adrian…one day, you will realize…the inevitability of fate…and the chains that bind…you to me for…all of eternity…”

The priest’s face is just a little too close to your own for your personal comfort. “Adrian…are you alright?”
>MacKay

The priest’s face is just a little too close to your own for your personal comfort. “Adrian…are you alright?”

“Buh?!” You press yourself further back into the chair.

“Oi, MacKay,” you can hear Brady off in the distance, from…the open door of the car. “Give the man some breathing room. I’m not the most judgemental of blokes, but I think that the last thing our friend here wants to wake up to is your face up in his. Not that yours isn’t a pretty face, Father, but the point is that-”

“Real funny, Brady,” you mutter, clutching your forehead. When you wake up, you’re supposed to feel refreshed. Right now, your brain feels like someone drove a semi over your neural matter, and backed up to make sure the damage lasted. “I’m…yeah, I’m alright. Wh…where are we now?”

MacKay backs off, much to your relief. “We’re in front of the beach house. The rental that Commander Alger got for our mission. We’re just about to start unloading the car, and I was chosen to wake you up.”

“Oh…well, thanks, I guess.”

That’s an understatement. You really don’t want to ponder what would’ve happened if MacKay didn’t wake you up in time. But…it was just a dream. Wasn’t it?

He clears his throat politely to get your attention. “Well, now that you’re awake, you wouldn’t mind giving us a hand with these bags, would you? Five day’s worth of clothing compressed in a tight space weighs heavier than one would think.”

>“Yeah, just gimme a sec…”

“Yeah, just gimme a sec…”

For a moment, you think to share the dream with him. You know, since he’s a priest and all. But then you decide not to. The last thing your team needs to think is that you’re going off the deep end. And besides, maybe it was just a dream…brought on by stress on the job. Yeah. That was it.

You’ve had the same dream twice before…although the ones involving fog and women pressing themselves against you seemed to be very common. Freud would have a field day. The book you read about dream analysis in psychology would probably categorize you with a burning urge to be dominated by a powerful woman.

Pft. Yeah right.

It only takes a few minutes for all five of you to unload the car. And MacKay was right. Five days worth of clothes is heavy if it’s just in a duffel bag. Thankfully, there’s a washing and drying machine, and the folder Alger gave you said that there were plenty of clothes stores and shopping outlets nearby.

The house itself isn’t too small. If anything, it’s the just the right size for all of you. A central family room, dining area, four bedrooms and a couch with a folding bed; this place was the ideal heaven for a post-college getaway.

“Hey, Sawbones.” Fitz is staring at you from the top floor, leaning against the railing with her usual crooked smile on her face. “We’re gonna head out to get some info as soon as we get unpacked. Scope out the scene and what not. Since you’ve done a good job of leadin’ us so far, we all decided that you should be in charge during the mission. Don’t break what isn’t broken, right?”

What.

Well, she isn’t wrong. “Okay, fine. I’m more than up for it.”

“Glad to hear it…oh wait. Brady!” Fitz runs to one of the rooms upstairs. “How do I get the wi-fi working? I mean, the COMP doesn’t show us using data, but when you’re used to payin’ phone bills…”

Moving to the kitchen, you lay the folder Alger gave you on the counter top. There are three big places that he highlighted as “sights of interest”: Lazy Susan’s, a local crab shack that was popular with tourists and residential folks alike; The Drydock, a bar where a majority of in-state college students tended to mix; and the Boardwalk, the main tourist attraction with restaurants, novelty stores and arcades that brought people to the beach.

You check your watch. It’s only two in the afternoon. That’s plenty of time to scope out one of the locations before night-time proper.

You should first investigate…
