Recap:

In the previous thread you got an innocent man locked away despite the pleadings of his desperate girlfriend. You don’t feel bad about this at all and were rewarded with a buttload of money, though it’s dubious whether or not you’ll be asked to testify in future cases.

Lopez corners you in the men’s room just minutes after the case.

“I don’t appreciate conversation while I’m pissing, Inspector.”

“Forgive me,” he says with mock sincerity, “but you’re a hard guy to get a hold of.”

“Is that some kind of bathroom innuendo or are you coming on to me in the worst way possible?”

The Inspector sighs and pulls a bottle of pep pills from his pocket, washing them down with a handful of water from the sink. He swallows before continuing, holding the rim of the basin for support.

“It’s Russians, Vince. They’re after you and now they’re after me. We need to stop them.”

“Sure, but what’s this ‘we’ stuff?”

“Working together will increase our chances of survival. I have a lot of resources I can deploy and I’ll be honest here, I’m stupid enough to believe you’ll find a way to be useful.”

You zip up as you mull your options.

You think people confront you in bathrooms entirely too often.

>Fine, make a plan. In the meantime I’ve got a hell of a day ahead of me.
>Fine, but it’s gotta be an even partnership.
>Fine, but I make the decisions.
>No way. I’ll watch my ass and you watch yours. The last thing I need is my life getting more complicated than it already is.

“I’ll do it but you’ve gotta understand, we’ll be partners in this. No pulling rank, Inspector.”

You muscle in on the sink, forcing the Inspector to back off in the direction of the hand dryer.

“I see. Well if there’s anything else I can do for you right now-”

“Maybe you’d be willing to share a few of those pick-ups with me as a start.”

Lopez scratches his nose and reaches into his jacket for the bottle.

“Alright, but I’m only going to give you two for the moment. If you want more, you’re going to have to get your own.”

He drops the pills into your hands.

You tuck the pills into your breast pocket, figuring you’ll save them for during the race.

The Inspector departs from your company and you head towards the parking garage where your white-washed chariot awaits. You set it to auto.

When you’re a few blocks away from Scyth Courthouse you go ahead and send Clarissa a message.

>Wnt 2 mk $500 wit 1 wrd trk?

The response pops back a few moments later.

>What are you looking for?

>Big Mantis

>Send cash to this account.

She provides a long account number that you’re able to route $500 to via the Illegal. Once the payment is confirmed you receive another text letting you know that she’s working on it and should have it ready in the next hour.

You decide to spend that time taking care of a few chores you’ve been neglecting, starting with downloading your files from the secret Polyium factory that GEC seems to have forgotten about. The process is time consuming but you’re able to make a baker’s dozen of copies on different flash drives with the potential to make many more.

As that’s happening, you surf the Darknet looking for a mechanic with knowledge of old gas engines. There are some rumors and even a handful of sites for enthusiasts with information about tuning up the engines yourself but there doesn’t seem to be anyone you can kidnap on short notice to work on your car. It’s a damn shame…

The Illegal buzzes to let you know that the file DicMax has arrived.

>Please excuse the name, it was hard to resist. -C

You skim the file, not willing to read it in its entirety right now. It’s written mostly hypothetically, based on the deceased sample you brought in last week. GEC scientists seem to believe that the Archimantis Maximus (superorder Dictyoptera) hunt in organized packs, communicating via pheremones and small “whistles” built into the abdomen that the insect can force air through by contracting specialized muscles. Reproductive systems in the sample you brought in where either defective, vestigial, or immature. All that could be concluded was that the bug wasn’t having sex any time soon.

Most disturbingly, intelligence levels are believed to be at least canine level or higher based on brain size. It’s impossible to be exact without a living specimen to experiment on. You scratch your ear and wonder if you can somehow still get specs to Clarissa for analyis after leaving GEC behind.

You thank her via text and tell her you’d like to get together sometime soon. For business.

>Better be.

Then you climb into the backseat and close your eyes.

The illegal wakes you up by the campsite where you left the Elevon, flashing and buzzing with a message from Derek giving the time and place of the race. You call him back, annoyed.

“What the hell do you mean it’s starting in Kwai Fong? What time is it?”

“…”

“So I’ve got an hour still.”

You look over at the Elevon. Where the hell are Jeremy and ‘Pedebody?

You check on the termites. They seem a bit more aggressive than usual, pounding the top of the habitat with force. There are also more soldiers than you remember, their bodies bulging with napthalene sacs.

Before setting out in pursuit of Jeremy, you decide to grow a brain and just call him instead. Much to your surprise, he answers. He's wandered off a little ways into the forest with 'Pedebody and they've killed a large spider of some kind (he says "we" but you figure it was more the 'pede's doing). You ask if the body is recoverable and Jeremy pauses, checks, and then returns to the phone with you.

"Nope."

You tell him to get back here right now and after a few minutes he emerges from the underbrush with 'Pedebody alongside.

You congratulate Jeremy and 'Pedebody on their fine kill, asking plenty of questions about the spider itself. Large dog-sized, brown, and yanked from the undergrowth by 'Pedebody it sounds like the mutant trapdoor that ambushed you the last time you passed through these woods. You tell them they did a public service by tearing the thing apart.

Before you make the kid's ego too big, you tell him to take the 'Pede and get in the van. Ole Vince has an appointment that he really can't afford to miss.

You slave the van to the illegal and set it to follow you before driving towards the site of the race.

You breeze through traffic at high speed, seemingly invisible to the Scyths. At one point you think you see a few delivery drones change course to follow you but your speed allows you to easily outstrip them and you proceed unharassed to your destination where you discover a vast construction site, surrounded by green wire fence. Looking through it it’s apparent that it’s an excavation and the signage claims that work is being done on a new subway stop.

Derek told you to proceed to "the gate" so you search for one in the fence and it opens for you, allowing both the Elevon and the van inside. A dirt trail leads down into the pit, vanishing at the end into a tunnel. Something smells really awful...

Just inside the mouth of the tunnel you're confronted by guards wielding enormous automatic rifles.

"Esperanza?" They ask, checking for your face on a guest list of some sort.

"The very same. Is it alright if I bring my van in?"

“Well, my mechanic is in there. Can I bring him?”

The guards look at one another and then back to you.

“Let’s see this mechanic.”

“Go ahead,” you tell them without thinking, “He’s in the back of the van. It should be unlocked.”

One of the guards meanders around the back of the car while the other keeps an eye on you, gun in hand.

You hear the doors open up and then a girlish scream.

“What the fuck?”

The guard watching you runs to help his companion.

“What the hell is that thing?”

Angry hissing is audible.

You lean out the side of your car.

“That’s my pet! He’s mostly harmless, just don’t provoke him!”

You try to sound as convincing as possible before getting out of your car to smooth things over.

The guards end up agreeing to let you take both Jeremy and the ‘pede inside, more from fear than anything else. The van still has to be rerouted however. You contact Lucas and he gives the okay for you to send it to his home for the time being.

Before you continue deeper, the guards hand you a small facemask.

“Your mechanic doesn’t need this but you’ll want this,” they tell you through their own masks, “It’s awful down there.”

>gained
>1 miniature gas mask

“Oh, and one more thing; no smoking.”

No smoking? What are they going to do if you do, call the cops?

Rolling past the checkpoint at last, you find the tunnel gets tighter before it widens and the stink intensifies. You put the mask on but there’s nothing that can be done for ‘Pedebody, who paces in the backseat irritably, putting holes in the leather.

The tunnel finally opens up into a large cavern and here, finally, you see the light. At least 50 racers are here, their cars all parked in neat rows while mechanics do their thing. Racers themselves are either inspecting cars or fraternizing with one another or wealthy patrons with their masks on. They are all much more stylishly dressed than you.

You park the Elevon at the far end of the lot and get out. Jeremy and the ‘pede follow you closely.

>attempt to gather intelligence on the track

You move around the event, attempting to catch tidbits of information about what the race will be like and where the track will run. Your style is greatly cramped by the strange masked boy and centipede that follow you around but what you learn is no one actually knows at the moment but a speech should be given in about 30 minutes by the head of the UGP and that afterwards all racers will receive a device designed to help them navigate the route.

Before trying anything else, you decide you should probably get Jeremy and the 'pede squared away somewhere. You seek out a race official and inquire into the whereabouts of a spectator's area.

"All the spectator's boxes are down that passageway"

He points at a tunnel far behind you, big enough for only one or two people at a time and flanked by two guards like the ones you encountered at the entrance.

You're surprised at how quickly the Illegal's various apps have started to become intuitive to you. You move between them with almost no issue at all, puzzling out meaning where there was none and using them to weave a protective web of protection around the car's wireless vulnerabilities.

This must be what it feels like to be a wizard.

You fling yourself into the driver's seat and start the engine. 'Pedebody hisses at you, surprised.

"Wait, are we racing?"

"Don't be dense, kid. Why did you think we were here?"

"You asked that guy where the spectator's boxes were! I thought we were just here to watch... whatever this is!"

His voice is a mix of anticipation and fear, wrapped together by a tortilla of surprise. You can see it in his eyes, he's experiencing it for the first time, the burrito of manhood.

"Why do you look like you want to cry?!"

"No reason!"

You put the Elevon into reverse and pull out, following your fellow racers towards yet another tunnel which leads into an even larger chamber. Here the ceiling is buttressed with numberous supports and you can see pieces of rusted garbage protruding from every surface. The cars and bikes assemble one by one in a vast array of shining machinery, glittering beneath this mountain of trash.

You locate Derek and Lucas in the middle of the pack and, as promised, they've reserved a position for you.

Above it all a figure in a tower of scaffolding looks down on all of you. The scene is one of dead silence, except for your car and it's gas engine. Other racers look on you much as churchgoers might look on someone who has farted loudly in the middle of a sermon. But it doesn't stop the man in the tower from pontificating.

<WELCOME,> he booms in Chinese, <To the Underground Grand Prix of Hong Kong!>

A cheer goes up from the racers.

<As many of you have no doubt realized, we have elected to run the race within the city limits this year. Cut the stream!>

<This information is now only for the ears of you racers. We are all currently beneath what was once known as Gin Drinker's Bay but was reclaimed by landfill into modern Kwai Fong. Before you you see a vast tunnel or, more honestly, a vast network of tunnels!>

<You may think to yourself that to create such a track was an extravagant venture! Not so! Our only expense was in the construction of this staging area, the track was built over the last century by uncountable hands! The first length of your track follows the century old Gin Drinker’s Line, first established by the empire of Britain! This long network of defenses and tunnels was widened and interconnected by the communists as a logistical support that stretched from here to beneath Lion’s Rock to Port Shelter in Sai Kung. It has not been maintained since before the war and is perilous from end to end!>

<The second length with take you abruptly south, into the secret Second City of Hong Kong, built to protect the city from nuclear attack but never used even in the Third World War. Streets are woven tightly together and you must be wary of failing infrastructure!>
>>
<Finally, you will emerge back onto the surface for the final stretch!>

There is a gasp at this revelation.

<Yes, in open scorn of the Scyths and the occupying forces, the Prix will run through the streets to a designated stopping point at the far end of Boundary Street! The full resources of the Prix are committed to making this happen!>

Another long cheer. As beautiful attendants pass navigation devices to each driver, you wonder what kind of headache this is going to create for Lopez as he watches the race.

You blast off the line, shifting furiously as the Elevon brings every cylinder online to hurl itself into the gaping maw of the Earth!

Your quick response time and aggressive acceleration catches the surrounding drivers by surprise and they largely fail to match you. You hold on to your position as the pack forms within the tunnel, headlights flashing madly against the walls as everyone jostles for an early advantage in the darkness. Ahead of you, two cars are pushed into the walls, where the debris grinds them into pieces.

Up ahead, three paths open up, the middle one being the highest and the other two ducking beneath it.

You shoot straight, heading down the middle tunnel. Lucas and Derek both go right and a portion of the more amateurish racers head left.

Many of those taking the middle route seem to be professionals and they are far ahead of you in their precisely engineered super machines as the middle way continues to climb upwards.

Fortunately, the path plateaus and opens up into a very deliberately constructed tunnel with a triangular ceiling. Lights have been strung along to help guide the way but the path is littered with rusting trucks and ancient military vehicles.

You speed up, moving erratically to avoid collapsed hunks of ceiling and moldering military equipment. Jeremy clutches the edges of his seat, eyes wide behind his mask as his side of the car comes within inches of being clotheslined by the cannon barrel of an ancient Type-79.

A car further down the road turns awkwardly and loses control, tumbling end over end down the tunnel. You drive underneath it as it flies through the air above you and finally crashes down behind you in a fireball that will surely cause everyone behind you to take pause.

Pushing the Elevon for even more speed, you catch the bastard he was chasing, a bright-red teardrop of a car that pulls itself forward with unnatural power. Nudging the things tail produces surprisingly little effect so you push flames from the dash to pull up alongside it, doing your best to dodge obstacles as you go. The driver looks over at you, a buff-and-bronzed he-man type, probably from the SAN. He grins, displaying pearly white teeth and you throw the weight of the Elevon at him in response. The strike connects with a satisfying crunch and pieces of his vehicle fly backwards at high speed. He is forced to the side of the track and has to slam on the brakes to avoid colliding with a guard booth.

>Position: 24/48

You're still far behind the pros. Up ahead, the walls of the track have fallen away entirely, revealing an overlook of one of the other paths, shooting towards the right.

You're nuts but you're not that nuts. You shoot past the overlook in time to see about a dozen racers shoot underneath you. You're fairly sure you spot Derek's truck towards the head of the pack but not Lucas's import. You try not to let that trouble you as you continue on the high road.

A pile of debris blocks your way, leaving only a small space for you to shoot through. You can't see over it but an explosion followed by a single wheel flying past leads you to be concerned.

>Position: 22/46

You pass through, threading the needle and find yourself confronted by an extremely angry variant of sewer lizard. Jeremy screams as it lashes out with massive claws designed to rend the earth but you slip past again and the tunnel lurches downward. The Elevon picks up speed and the pros come back into sight just in time for them to wink out of it at the end of the slope. Struggling to keep control and continue to dodge obstacles, you're shocked when the tunnel suddenly ends, ejecting you at high speed into a vast cave that's bigger than any cathedral. Your headlights strike the ceiling, shining directly into the eyes of sleeping bats. Giant bats.

The Elevon crashes to the cavern floor with a coccyx smashing impact but you maintain course. The pros dash through the stalagmites with ease but you can hear the bats behind you, squeaking irritably for revenge.

Mother Nature's most phallic creations shine wetly in the glare of your headlights as you careen through them, heedless of your own safety of that of the teenage boy beside you who now screams at every close call. Mania drives you slowly towards 110 mph as you try and catch those damn pros. And you finally do begin to gain ground as you spot the exit from the cavern; a tiny passageway barely two car lengths wide but several high.

Behind you the bats swoop, swarm, and begin diving towards you enmasse. You make a beeline towards the exit as soon as you can, with the flapping of leathery wings only seconds behind you.

The tunnel turns abruptly to the right and nearly corkscrews downward, so you jerk the car into a high speed drift, passing an unprepared pro and earning your first actual pass.

The downward slope continues once more until you finally rejoin the other two routes you split off from earlier. You're further to the rear than you imagined you would be; it seems your route was actually the longest! You attempt to translate your speed into additional passes but to no avail and you end up falling behind slightly as the beginning of the end approaches. The herd is noticeably thinner as you proceed.

You find Lucas again, cruising in the middle of the pack. Derek is far ahead of you both, somewhere in the top ten you think. The walls have turned from trash to concrete to natural rock and you assume you must be passing through the tunnels beneath Lion's Rock. The terrain is rougher and less stable; unprepared racers are apt to lose control.

Pebbles and grains of sand ping off the windshield of the Elevon as the pack fly across the natural surface beneath Lion's Rock. Scattered evidence of long gone military occupation still protrudes from the landscape but in more subtle ways. Here and there are discarded boxes of ammo and even desiccated weaponry half buried in dirt and sand and hidden in total darkness.

You add more gas to the engine and the flames on the dash flicker blue, indicating that you've reached 125 mph. You outstrip Lucas (who seems content to retain his current position) and push upwards. Your opponents seem unable to resist your increase in speed, falling behind you one by one.

>Position:18/39

Even as you advance you notice that the tires are losing traction. The ground is getting thicker and the road narrower. Shafts of evening light interrupt the path, falling through cracks in the ceiling. The road twists and turns with sudden chicanes and you grit you teeth to keep the Elevon from sliding into the wall. Trickling water under the car turns into a full blown stream and the racers ahead of you send up roostertails from their rear tires.

You enforce your will upon the motions of the Elevon and sustain your forward momentum. A blue racer that you remember seeing on television competing in another Grand Prix, crashes out. His largely intact chassis skids to a stop just in time for you to drift past, spraying him with water.

Two more competitors succumb to your relentless slalom, moving you to the outer edge of the top ten.

The slip and slide finally comes to an end however, as the stream empties into a man-made drain and the road pushes upwards again. You maintain speed and your navigation device (which a quavering Jeremy reads for your benefit) indicates that the end of the first leg has nearly arrived... and it does, unexpectedly. The road opens up into an enormous underground harbor, completely enclosed from the outside world. A forgotten submarine sits in the center of an enormous u-bend, a tattered Communist flag hanging sadly from bow. In the middle of the bend (where Derek and the other racers have nearly reached) is the checkpoint, marked with bright ribbons and flashing lights

You trigger the turbocharger and the car accelerates as you enter the long bend. On your right, the water glitters with the trace movements of multi-colored fish; a colony of coral has taken root in the sheltered environment of this artificial bay. You're sure you'd be more appreciative if you were dealing with a few less g-forces.

Though you draw close behind the racer in the number 9 position, he succeeds in blocking your path. It's not a huge deal since Derek is up in 6th place but it does frustrate you to pass through the first checkpoint in 10th.

Behind you, you spot your first actual pursuers as they try and close with you before the bend finishes. The best they can manage right now is to hang menacingly in your rear-view but you're concerned about the presence there.

The bend concludes in another tunnel that quickly dumps you onto an elevated highway above a city of concrete domes, many painted in fading shades of red. Light is supplied by a scintillator that hangs from the ceiling, a huge apparatus of glass and water that spreads the fading light of the surface over everything...

The concrete beneath you rumbles and gives way as you pass over it, leaving vast pitfalls that you watch one of your pursuers tumble into at high speed.

You ignore him and his emotions though, focusing every fiber of your being on moving up towards first place. You're passing the 150 mph mark and the reaction times demanded are stressing your nerves to the breaking point. two professional drivers sink behind you and then another two. Derek moves to give you the benefit of his slip stream and you use it to catapult towards the racer in 5th.... but that takes care of itself.

At the far end of the highway, the number five car strikes a blue-green sprouter with its nose blades and cuts it neatly in two. (Un)fortunately, this causes the driver to lose control and spin out on the side of the track. You're almost laughing before you see the rest of the sprouters on the track ahead of you. It's not a crowd exactly, more of a loose grouping, but one collision at this speed might be fatal.

>3d6+5, speed demon is available only for the most challenging option, boosts are available for all
>risk driving through at top speed (high DC, remain in close contention with top 4)
>decrease speed, try and push through with minimal damage (Mid-DC, less ground lost)
>fall back behind Derek, let him make a hole in them with the truck (low DC, safest option but requires giving ground)

Speed Demon, maybe boost.

I'm crazy but, maybe, just this once

Technically behind Derek is only sixth place now, since Derek would then be in 5th right.

Give me three rolls of 1d10 for impact damage and I'll take the lowest. Rolling three tens means instadeath, so don't do that.

Meanwhile, I'm making food. There may be a short delay.

You slow down but there's only so much deceleration you can do from 150 mph. You can't avoid striking one of the shambling sprouters dead-on. It makes a terrible KRUMP as the grille of the car makes contact, breaking its hips with a kiss. The creature bounces up, onto your hood, and smashes through the windshield at high-speed, raining glass on you and Jeremy along with itself.

The creature gropes and tears at you in the midst of its own death spasms and, still in shock, you're unable to resist it. Fortunately, Mr. 'Pedebody recovers from the crash more quickly and lunges at the sprouter from the back seat, tearing open its belly and filling the car with its noxious viscera until it finally gives up and stops moving.

>Health - 5/10 - You're badly hurt by the impact
>STR/STA - 6/12 - You've lost a great deal of physical integrity
>Nerves - 2/13 - You're in a state of shock

Detached, you can hear cars flying past you or striking sprouters themselves outside. You pull the sprouter corpse off yourself and push it back onto the hood of the car where it rolls off. Then you get a good look at Jeremy; he's unconscious and badly cut in several places by glass. You do your best to apply first aid and swallow your pep pills.

>roll 2d4 for Nerve Restoration (I'll take the highest of three rolls and then write the final post for the night)

Japanese trucks are the third leading cause of death in Asia next to very mild coughs and giving birth to a protagonist.

Hopefully none of these are imports from before the war.

Whatever Lopez gave you... he wasn't kidding about only needing two. You feel your composure returning just in time to realize the remaining sprouters are starting to drift towards the Elevon. You look mournfully at Jeremy as you turn the key in the ignition repeatedly until it finally starts again.

There better be a doctor at the finish line.

I'm going to go ahead and archive this. We'll wrap up the race in the next thread and hopefully everything will be okay.

This is why I wanted to boost twice.
>>
>>45064200

If you're curious by the way, your current position is 18/37.
>>
At this point we could just forfeit. There's probably zero possibility for us to rank high enough that Lucas will be able to get us to reward tiers.
>>
>>45064237
There's no forfeiting in the Prix.

should have boosted, boys.

Where were you an hour ago.

Could've just been slightly behind Derek in sixth place.

Half-serious question, was this thread as badly written as I thought it was? Because I'm not in a proper state of mind for self-evaluation.

Lopez story will be edited tomorrow, the end came quicker than I thought (which was nice, I haven't written an end to something in a while).

Yes, you definitely dodged a figurative bullet, even if it figuratively winged you.
