Up until Camp Cocytus, the closest you’ve ever experienced in using firearms was with the paintball guns that you used for middle and high school birthday parties and summer camps. It goes without saying that firing the real deal is completely different than emptying the paint canister into your friend’s back. You quickly found that out when you nearly dropped the weapon after firing your first real gun.

Alger was sure to introduce firearms training in-between the grueling hours of marathons, suicides and all manner of physical exertions. Standard target practice, post-calisthenics drills to simulate shooting while exhausted, the Commander was sure to drill basic firearms skills into the lot of you. Even Fitz, who was already a talented shot, managed to learn something new from Alger.

Brady fell in love with the sniper rifle, and Victoria surprised everyone with her ability to almost no-sell the recoil of a shotgun. MacKay seemed to favor using the assault rifle, while Fitz continued to prefer her Sig Sauer. You yourself never really found a preference. You could more or less shoot with near-consistent results with the guns Alger introduced you to.

All of these thoughts run through your head as the six of you run towards the armory. Overhead, you can hear the distant sound of explosions and gunfire, intermingled with the odd demonic roar. You sincerely hope that the gunfire is coming from the rest of the veteran agents assigned to the facility.

(cont.)
>>
Upon reaching the steel door of the armory, Alger presses his Gauntlet against the electronic lock. The machinery within chirps, whirs and clicks as the door opens with a very noticeable BUZZ. Your comrades rush into the room, grabbing their preferred weapons of choice and ammunition from the gunmetal shelves and racks.

You reach for the shelves, and select...

You reach for the Beretta M9 and the M4 Carbine, as well as their respective magazines and ammunition. Pistol and assault rifle seems to be a fairly well-rounded combination. Close to mid-range, and mid-range to long, your bases seem to be fully covered as far as hitting an enemy is.

Everyone seems to have grabbed their favored weapon, plus something a little extra. The majority have grabbed pistols to accompany their main and favored weapon, barring Fitz. She grabbed a shotgun. Something about “reliving SWAT” among other small talk as you all suit up.

>Equipped M9 Beretta
>Equipped M4 Carbine

Once all of you have locked and loaded, Alger addresses you by the door. “Contrary to what you may think,” His voice comes through the headset in a static hiss, “No we do not set up surprise pop quizzes to see what you have learned. This is a legitimate combat zone with demonic entities of unknown allegiance attacking our perimeter. You would never be facing this kind of thing at your level, but we don’t have any other option in the way of reinforcements.

“I want you to all follow my orders to the goddamn letter, understand? Listen to me, and we all just might make it back in time for supper, alive and in one piece. Failure to do so could result in insubordination charges, and/or painful death. Are we clear?”

“Yes, sir.” You all chorus.

“Good. We’re gonna break up into two three-man fire teams. I will obviously be leading one. I’m putting Brown in charge of the other since he seems to be the one with the most leadership skills. Brown! Pick two to accompany you, and I’ll take the rest of them off your hands.”

You give a sharp nod. “Yes, sir. I won’t fail to live up to your expectations.”

You can almost hear Alger’s grudging approval over the headset. “Glad to hear it, rookie. And your fireteam?”
“Brady, Fitz,” You point to the respective members. “You’re coming with me.”

They sharply nod and walk to stand adjacent by you. Victoria and MacKay give you nervous smiles and gestures of “good luck” as they head over to Alger.

“Alright,” your commander breathes. “The enemy is coming in from two fronts: down from the mountains to the north-west and out of the forests to the eastern side of the territory. We’ve got the some of the staff upstairs holding down the fort, and a squad of veteran hunters moving through the mountains, picking off the stronger demons.

“Our goal isn’t to counter-attack, but to hold out until reinforcements from D.C. arrive via helicopter in about an hour. What I need you to do is take your squad and your demons to protect the primary generators on the eastern side of the facility. We do have backups, but those take a full five minutes to activate, and I’d rather not lose what security systems we have left. Capisce?”

“Yes, sir!”

>New Objective: Guard the Primary Generators

“Good. Now git to it, soldiers! We’re on the clock, and time’s running out.”

You fumble out a brief salute before immediately taking off in the direction of the generators. But before you exit out the door, you stop, with Fitz and Brady coming right up behind you. There's some things you've gotta take care of before heading for the generators.

“Fitz, I need you on point,” You say as you punch commands into your COMP. “Brady, I need you guarding our asses in the rear. I’ve got us covered in the middle, got it?”

Fitz smirks as she hoists her shotgun. “Dishing it out from the front is what I do best. ‘side’s, I’m more of a charge’n’barge kind of gal anyway than footin’ it in the middle.”

Fitz approves +2

“Aye,” Brady mutters as he adjusts the scope on his rifle. “You can trust me to keep a sharp eye on your backsides. Want us to bring out our demons as well?”

Brady approves +2

You think about it before agreeing to it. “Better to be safe than sorry. Did you guys get all that?”

The last bit of your sentence is directed to your demons, who emerge from the COMP with the push of a button and a flash of light.

Napaea makes a little maneuver in the air like Pixie before acknowledging you with a bow. “Yes, Master,” she says in a soft voice. “Protect the human machines from the rampaging demons.”

Compared to her, Gryphon’s tell-tale cry makes for a very sharp contrast as it through the air and pounces on the ground. “WHERE ENEMIES, MASTER?!” It demands. “SAY WE FIGHT?! HUNT?!”

You resist the urge to rub your forehead in consternation before answering, “Yes, Gryphon. We’re about to fight. But the enemy is hiding right now, so we need to be on the lookout, got it?”

The beast seems to be somewhat crestfallen at no visible enemies, but it bounces back energetically. “FIGHT! HUNT! KILL! GRYPHON WILL BE THE BEST! COWARDLY DEMONS DIE TO TALONS.”

You pause momentarily as the rest of your fire team summons their demons. Asparas and Lham Dearg stand at the ready besides Fitz, and the familiar Jack Frost and Mokoi bounce at Brady’s legs. “We ready to go?”

Fitz and Brady respectively respond with “Hell yeah./Aye.”

With that, you sprint through the house and exit through the eastern doors.

Surprisingly, this side of the facility isn’t too badly impacted. From the noise, you expected there to be craters and scorched earth. The explosions and bullet fire are coming primarily from the Western side, where apparently the stronger demons were attacking.

Your COMP chirps to life, with a display of a map flashing on the screen. You’ve got approximately fifty meters before you can make it towards the power generators, and the path takes you right alongside the woods.Unless you're reading it wrong, of course.

But you're fairly sure you aren't. After all, you read the manual.

Brady sets the scope of his rifle to his eyes before saying,” Can’t believe it, but she’s right. Confirming at least six porcupine demons the size of small dogs heading straight for us. Dunno about you, but it looks like they’re really out of it. Like...rabies out of it. Permission to fire?”

High rolls mean that you generally get weaker demons pertaining to whatever area you're encountering them in. Lower rolls mean stronger demons.

Nat 100 spawns a Magatama or a rare demon of your choice.

Nat 1 spawns an "OH FUCK" strong enemy, or a Fiend depending on the circumstances.

Depending on the modifier, you're either completely caught off-guard or notice it before it attacks. But it depends on the demon.

>>44995982

It's more along the lines of "how likely it is to kill you" than it is in terms of XP. I've made it fairly balanced in that whole regard..
>>
>>44996019

Wait. Fuck. I meant to say Mitama, not Magatama. So demon with rare loot, essentially.

With that said, Magatamas will eventually appear, but those kinds of encounters are going to be very rare and controlled. Lucy doesn't just go around handing those things away like some sort of demonic charity.
>>
I'm assuming you mean Mitama
>>
>>44996110
>Lucy doesn't just go around handing those things away like some sort of demonic charity.
No, but appearantly there's enough of them to show up in Loot Boxes and in Random Item shops.
Lucy needs to keep a better eye on his demonic candy box.
>>
>>44996110
Technically, as Magatama are demons, with a Nat 100 we COULD choose to have a wild Magatama appear as our rare demon choice, correct?
>>
>>44996188
Like he said. Magatama's will be very controlled. We won't control when they show up.
>>
>>44996212
He also said on a Nat 100 we could choose a rare demon to show up. As they are normally very controlled, they stand to be considered rare and they are living demons.
This is something that needs to be clarified, by Kaz. Not assumed either way by people who are not Kaz.

“Understood.” Barely a second passes between Brady’s word before the CRACK-HISS of the sniper rifle goes off. In the far distance, you can see one of the bodies drop like a sack of potatoes and fail to get up again.

“Nice shooting, tex,” Fitz remarks. “They’re still too far out for me to hit, though. I give the spiny runts at least twenty seconds at their current speed before they reach us. Then they're gonna get a bellyful of lead."

She emphasizes the 'lead' by cocking the shotgun.

“Gryphon, move in on point defense!” You command. “Tear them to shreds!”

Gryphon’s joyous shriek manages to make all three of you wince. “YES MASTER!”

Another loud CRACK tears through the air as Brady picks off another one of the recently-identified Chagrin demons, the one that you hit actually. Out of the corner of your eye, you can see Napaea nod her head. “Chagrin are intelligent demons, and very cunning ones at that. See how they attack Gryphon? Without any plan or semblance of order? Almost every Chagrin knows that Gryphons are weak to ranged attacks, such as their Needle Shot. For them to only go in using physical attacks and brute strength…”

“Then it means that something is seriously wrong,” You finish grimly. You have another of the yellow porcupines in your sights. From a tertiary side view, it looks like Fitz is just itching to get into the mosh pit that the melee has devolved into.

You take the shot, and it lands a very direct hit on the Chagrin you targeted. One bullet misses, but two manage to make two lovely holes through the demon’s prickly exterior. Assuming that your shots got him really good, it looks like there’s only one of the suckers left.

But you spoke too soon. The aforementioned last one seems to have momentarily broken through whatever mind-addling disease is controlling it. It laughs dementedly as it rears up and fires a burst of needles at Gryphon. The winged beast howls as they tear through its hide and wings, leaving lacerations about its body as it falls to the ground, stunned.

You panic. “Fitz, get in there now! Take care of the last one!”
“Got it!” Her demons trail behind her as she wades through the tall grass, past the bodies in the ground. She closes the distance within seconds, and cries, “Eat lead, shithead!”

The demon doesn’t even have time to turn around before Fitz levels the Mossberg at it and fires an almost point-blank shot. Asparas seems to twitch in displeasure as bits get all over her, while Lham Dearg starts laughing like a madman.

It seems to be quite dead. It isn’t moving as far as you can tell. The situation has been resolved. Your COMP beeps with a post-combat report and you check the holographic display that pops up right in front of your face.

>Centaur is now Level 4!

>Gryphon is Level 5!
>Gryphon has learned Lunge!

>Napaea is now Level 3!
>Napaea has learned Zan!

You dismiss the report, and Brady seems to be speechless as he lowers his sniper rifle. “Holy shit,” He mutters. “Yeah, remind me not to piss her off. If she’s like this right now, I’d hate to see her during her time of the month.”

You roll your eyes. “You don’t even know if she’s menstruating right now.”

“And I’m not dumb enough to just straight up assume whenever she has a safe day.”

Sighing, you return your attention to Napaea and promptly leave the Englishman with his dry humor. “I’m going to need you to heal Gryphon. Can you do that for me?”

“Yes, Master.” She says. “I can do that for you."

You shoulder your rifle and make a brisk walk towards the site of the carnage. The sharp scent of iron fills your nose as you try to avoid the piles of bits and intestines that are strewn all over the fields. As Napaea goes to heal the stunned Gryphon, you approach Fitz as she’s in the process of scraping what suspiciously looks like grey brain matter from the muzzle of her shotgun.

>Gryphon’s Loyalty is now 15%.

She looks up and gives you a faux-salute. “We ready to head out, now?”

“Yep, as soon as the big guy over there,” You jerk a thumb towards a slowly recovering Gryphon, “Gets patched up. Which shouldn’t take too long. He’s a frickin’ tank, is what he is.”

“Can’t say for the same for these guys, though,” Fitz mutters, nudging the corpse of a Chagrin with her boot.

“Indeed. Let’s get back on the trail and set up positions. Gryphon, you alright there, buddy?”

With a noticeable grunt, the beast raises itself and presents itself before you. “YES, MASTER. MOVE TO NEXT HUNT?"

The fact that he’s speaking in his usual broken English seems to be a good sign. Still you should keep an eye out for more of those demons, just in case they use ranged attacks on Gryphon.

A though strikes you as all of you continue your sprint towards the generators. You push a few buttons on your COMP and make a direct call to Alger. Something stinks, and it isn’t the splatter on Fitz’s combat armor. That’s a whole different can of worms you don’t want to discuss.

“Alger here!” The reply to your call nearly deafens you, along with the sound of a heavy machine gun spitting at rounds at an unseen enemy. It’s quite odd, hearing the sound of explosions over the COMP while they’re happening on the opposite side of the facility. “Brown, this’d better be good or I’m going to unscrew your neck and-”

“Got something for you, sir,” You cut him off. “I’ve got good reason to believe that these demons are acting more feral than usual.”

“Well no shit they are, son. I hadn’t noticed – Jenkins, hit the fucking deck!” There’s a brief moment of static as the sound of what sounds like a rocket launcher is fired. Wow. Seems like they’re having a really bad time over there.

As soon as the ringing leaves your ears, you continue, “They’re also acting more stupid. My Napaea strongly thinks that there’s something’s making them act this way.”

Alger grunts. “Well, that’s interesting. Real interesting. Still, as much as I’d like to continue this VERY INTERESTING discussion,” his voice seemed to rise in volume as he fired his gun, “Orders are still orders. We’ll figure out why something’s rotten in the state of Virginia after we completely lock it down. Alger out.”

Before you can get a word in edge-wise, the line cuts off. You don’t blame him, though. You’d probably be just as snippy if you were going through a high-risk combat scenario.

With that said, you get back to focusing on the task at hand and continue running as fast as you can. Two minutes go by. Now, the entrance to the generators are within your sights, and there’s just a minute left of sprinting and a dozen meters before you reach it.

You manage to reach the fence without further incident. It seems that the Task Force doesn’t spare expenses. Barbed wire fence, electrified fence, seriously. You’ve got the dinosaurs (demons) and a guy with a funny accent; this is a scene right out of Jurassic Park.

All that’s missing is the clever girl.

It’s an impressive set up. There’s a solitary entrance, dug into the earth with some kind of barriers to form as a makeshift trench. A nearby tower a good twelve feet into the air easily gives a good view of the surrounding area. That’s where Brady’s gonna go.

Fitz presses her Gauntlet against the electronic lock, and promptly curses when it rejects her codes. “Sunovabitch! How the hell are we supposed to get in now?”

“Here, let me try,” You say, pushing past her. “Maybe since I’m fire-team leader, it’ll let me in?”

You don’t know that for sure, but it’s your best shot at any rate.

It’s a slight movement, but you notice it half-way as you’re in the process of transferring the code from your COMP to the electronic lock. You don’t even have time to sigh, or make a witty rejoinder. This is your “clever girl”, and she’s ready for action.

The slight rise in the temperature is all you need to know that this attack is gonna hit all three of you. Another mass fire spell, the second one of the day. Yippie-kay-fucking-yay. You already know that this is gonna suck.

But you have enough time to hit the deck, and possibly shield someone from the attack. Problem is, there’s two members of your fire team, and as far as you know, there’s only one body that you control.

As the heat reaches its absolute threshold, you make a snap decision.

“Sorry, Fitz,” You mutter in apology as you push yourself back from the gate and lunge towards Brady.

“What in the f-URK” Are all the words he’s able to say before you body him into the ground with extreme prejudice. And not a moment sooner. The instant you hit the ground, the clever girl unleashes a wave of fire that engulfs the area in front of the entrance.

You’re unable to stop yourself from screaming as the exposed skin on your back begins to blister under the heat. Sure, this isn’t the first time you’ve been burned. But this is nothing compared to the light scalding you got from the stove.

Right now, you can feel your skin getting warmer under the armor. For a brief moment, you’re worried that it’s going to cook you alive, but the source of the heat vanishes. It still hurts like a mother, but you can rest easy in the fact that you aren’t going to get hit.

>-7 HP

Your demons seem to be alright, from their worried reactions as they hover over you. From your peripherals, it looks like Brady’s Jack Frost somehow managed to dodge the blast of fire, and Mokoi seems to be alright.

You look up. Fitz seems to have emerged from the flames with only the exterior of her fatigues burned, but her Apsaras looks like she took a nasty hit. Lham Dearg seems to have weathered the heat. But your relief doesn’t last too long.

A blast of purple erupts from the forest, hitting Fitz in the dead center of her torso. Her eyes bug wide open and all she’s able to hiss out is “Goddddaammmmiittttttt….” before she completely freezes. Literally. Freezes in place, and topples over like a statue.

“Jesus Christ!” Brady exclaims as you roll off of him. “You’re back, mate! It’s…it’s…”

“I…” You take a moment to grit your teeth your back starts to throb in pain. “I know…Napaea…heal…”

You blink, and Napaea is right beside you with her hands building up the familiar light of a healing spell. “Understood!”

The cool sensation of being enveloped by water suddenly replaces the pain in your back. You resist the urge to sigh, and instead start dishing out orders. “Gryphon…go into the woods. Seek and destroy whatever it is that hit us.”

“YES MASTER!” Gryphon seems oddly chipper for having just been blasted with fire. He sets of at a moderate sprint into the foliage with the subtlety of a oxen, crashing through the bushes and charging right through the tree branches.

You smile. There’s something pleasant about your winged friend’s simplicity.

But back to the task at hand. “Get your demons on patrol. Overwatch, now. Remember how we had Knocker build an Ice barrier for Ghoul? Think Jack Frost can do that?”

It takes a moment for Brady’s mind to come back to the present, but he nods frantically at your words. “R-right! Yeah, sure I can…I can do that…Mokoi, join the gryphon! Jack, I'm gonna need you to…”

You turn your attention towards Fitz’s demons, who are standing guard over their master...erm, mistress with fierce determination on their faces.

There’s something about them that suggests that they’re willing to listen to your orders. Carrying them out was something different, though, but just willing to listen was more than enough for you. Maybe it’s an aura of command that you have, or the way that you’ve managed to tame four demons.

“I promise to keep your master safe,” You slowly say as your back finishes healing. “But right now, we could really use your help to get us out of this bad mess.”

Lham Dearg nods, but Apsaras fixes you with a critical glare. “Then pray tell, if you wish to protect my mistress, then why did you save the boor and not her instead?”

And that’s what you were afraid of.

You grimace. “Brady isn’t the kind of guy who can take a lot of hits. Fitz, on the other hand is, and given her independent streak, she would be the type of person to dislike being saved.”

The ice demon contemplates your words before saying, “Indeed you are correct. Very well, I shall assist you. But know that if you fail, then your life is forfeit.”

At that, Lham Dearg smiles too wide, and smacks the flat of his sword against his hand in emphasis. The guy doesn’t speak a lot, but his actions take care a lot of unspoken words. It just so happens that you infer pain and suffering before a grisly death.

Meep.

As per your orders, Apsaras joins Jack Frost in constructing an Ice barricade, and Lham Dearg bounds off into the woods in search of the mystery demon. You send a wordless prayer to whatever deity’s listening that your demons don’t run away, kill each other, or burn down the rest of the forest.

Dear God, that would be a disaster of unmitigated proportions.

Brady Approves +10 for saving his life!
Fitz Disapproves -2

You remember the last time you tried to open the damned thing. A burnt back for all your goddamn troubles. This time…oh, this time you’re keeping a sharp eye out for whatever the hell it was that left you nearly cooking in your armor.

“Yeah,” You eventually say. “Just gimme a second…”

To your complete and utter lack of surprise, there’s a chirping noise as the light on the lock goes from red to green. One buzz and metal clank later, and the gate parts slightly to let Brady in.

He nods in acknowledgement before sprinting towards the tower. “Cover me while I climb up, okay?”

“Nothing’s gonna hit you,” You say in a level tone as you keep a sharp eye darting from foliage to dense undergrowth. Try as you might, you aren’t able to completely remove the growing feeling nervousness out of your stomach. “Swear it…”

With the ice barricade finished, the demons remaining at the entrance stand at the ready and vigilant. Jack Frost, Apsaras, and Napaea have all their points covered, magic at the ready in their hands and eyes tracking every little movement, every little noise.

Your vigilance pays off. There’s a spot in the undergrowth where some of the leaves don’t match up with each other. Like a rippling pattern that just doesn’t quite match the green background.

It looks like some kind of bird-man...thingy. Feathers and all. There's a faint metallic sheen on its claws that catch the light. Probably not a smart choice for camouflage.

The sight of a slight glow building up in its mouth is enough to give you pause. Shoot first, ask what the fuck it is later.

You only take a quick moment to flick it to Full-Auto. Within another second, you feel your finger squeezing the trigger.

The standard M4A1 Carbine magazine has thirty rounds. You fired two, three-burst shots at the Chagrin demons earlier. In theory, you should have twenty four rounds left. That are about to exit the barrel at a minimum of 700 Rounds per Minute…which translates into eleven rounds per second.

Someone’s about to have a really bad time.

The look on your face is cold and completely devoid of any sort of amusement as the lead starts to fly into the undergrowth. The THWP THWP THWP of bullet smacking into the ground is barely audible above the barking noise of the gun. You’re not even sure if all your shots are hitting.

But it seems that some of them did. You hear a scream of pain, accompanied by a sudden movement within the undergrowth. In an instant, the site of movement is immediately beset by demonic magic. Shards of ice and sharp blades of wind race towards the area, cutting apart everything in their path and kicking up an ungodly dust cloud.

By the time the debris settles, the area is completely laid to waste, stripped of all foliage and covering.

On second thought, I think I'll hold off on the roll. Disaster narrowly averted.

Unfortunately, you aren’t so lucky…this time, anyway.

Save for some bloodstains and a few frozen feathers, there’s no other sign that the bird demon had been there. Well that’s just great. Now the demon knows that you have a good idea of what it looks like. And then it would plan around what you’d draw from its appearance, forcing you to plan around that plan…

You stop yourself before you go into a never-ending circle of paranoia. Best better kill that now.

But all things considered…it looks like you guys really fucked it up real good. Hopefully it got the message and wouldn’t come back. Now all you have to do is make sure it doesn’t come back and hold down the generators until reinforcements arrive.

And the cherry on top? It looks like the sunovabitch left a blood trail from its hiding spot. You make a quick reminder to pass that information onto the demons in the forest. So it turns out that your luck is getting better! There’s nothing that’s going wrong-

“HMMMGGGGGG.”

Oh, wait. Right.

Despite being immobile, Fitz seems to be doing the best she can to move. Unfortunately, all her efforts are translating into are jerky rotations on her elbow that do little to no help at all in breaking whatever spell’s been cast on her.

Her eyes still seem capable of rotation. Currently, they’re fixated on you with the most intense look they can muster.

You...really should do something about her.

>Is there something behind me? Blink once for yes.
>No? Do you want me to do something? Y/N?
>If yes
Do you want me to move you? Heal you? Something else?

You tell the demons to stay alert as you squat down besides Fitz.

“Is there something you need?” You ask. If looks could kill, you’d be dead multiple times over. “I’m not trying to be a smartass. Like…here, blink once for yes, twice for no, okay? Can you do that?”

She still looks as irritable as an immobilized person can be, but she manages to blink once.

“Gotcha. So…do you want me to do something?”

One blink. “No shit.”

“Okay, then. You want me to fix you?”

One blink, with a desperate look in her eyes. “Oh for the love of God, yes!”

“Ah…right, about that…” You rub your head sheepishly. “It looks like we don’t have any items or spells that can heel this kind of thing…whatever it is.”

“A bind spell, mortal,” Apsaras answers without addressing you directly. “My mistress has been struck with a paralyzing spell, the likes of which can only be nullified by an item, a healing spell, or the victim’s own personal prowess.”

“…okay then,” You respond to the demon before returning back to Fitz. “Did you get all that?”

A quick, irritated blink. “Of course, Captain Obvious.”

“Well then, you can clearly see that I don’t have a lot of options here...”

>Move Fitz behind the electric fence.
>Leave her at the barricade.

And that's it for tonight guys. It's 4 AM where I'm at and I'm completely bushed. Time to hit the hay, I suppose.

So, should we decide this next session, then?

Probably in two days. Wednesday evenings are generally free since I don't have classes on Thursdays. But it could just as easily happen tomorrow due to the fuckton of snow my university got from the blizzard. It isn't melting any time soon.

Any who, it's time to kick off the usual ending.

Gonna archive it in a few minutes.
