Ask Languid Anything: ask.fm/HellbornQM

You are Sierra Beckhoff, and you are the Imperiate – the one true tyrant of the thousand hells. That is, if you can survive long enough to reclaim your inheritance.

In order to ensure you’re kickass enough to take your varied enemies head on, you’ve decided to rush forward with operation mad gains. Tonight, you and a motely crew of your selection will telezap into Canada. There you’ll go tripping over to the shores of Lake Superior to claim the anchor node of an elemental spirit, and master its power as your own.

If you mess up this spirit business, you’ll be too weak to confront your myriad enemies. King Yellow, Sulkrasph the shadow master, and the Stygian Grand Wyrmwrither Ushologuissa all have reasons to want you gone, and you’re running out of time.

One thing that helps not mess up serious business is serious firepower. After raiding your dad’s secret hideout, you have a whole bunch of magic weapons that just might come in handy. So it is you find yourself with Harvey Hallow (your adoptive brother), and your fellow conclave member, Orias Vincain – the most qualified people you can think of on short notice who can figure out what magics you’re dealing with.

--

Were your parents even ever married? Does that matter when you’re talking about marginally-mortal folks who lived life on the wild side?

Wait. Corithis was like, five hundred years old. What if she’d been married before? What if she had kids before? What if you have like, a half-family someplace? Like, you know you’re her heir, but really, who cared about what her business was before she was the Imperiate and hit it big?
>>
>>44992721

Maybe Orias is not the man to ask such questions.

And yet he’s here. He’s the only target for your curiosity. You frown and brush your hair out of your face. “Hey, so. Was Corithis ever married to anybody?” you ask him. “You know, like my dad? Or maybe anyone else?”

He seems to pick up where you’re coming from, and shakes his head. “The Imperiate was never publicly married,” says Orias. “I’ve heard tell she chose a new consort to toy with every century or so.”

That’s... surprisingly tame. The prospect of being with somebody for more than a year is kind of a weird idea for you. A hundred years? Like. You like Wolf a lot. Like a whole lot. It’s not even funny. But do you like him a century’s worth? (+1 Stress: 26) You shake the thought from your head. One step at a time.

Corthis. You’re talking about your mom. That’s what’s important. “Any chance there’s any other heirs running around out there?” you ask. “Maybe there’s like, a cool hell sibling I haven’t met?”

“I doubt that’s the case,” says Orias. “If she had any children, they would have come forward, or been pushed forward to lay claim to the empire she conquered. It’s said she was barren. But...” he gives you a significant look, “obviously lowborn spin idle tales. Most believe them, all the same. I’d assumed they were truth till I learned of you.”

“It’s okay,” says Harvey, “cool hell siblings are overrated. They’d only want to duel you to the death.”

“Yeah, there is that,” you admit.

“Now cool California siblings, see, you don’t have to duel them to the death,” he continues.

You consider this with a nod. “Never thought about it like that.” Harvey and Ro are about as chill of people as you could hope to keep around. (-2 Stress: 24) The last thing you’d want is to add somebody else – somebody as potentially as irritating as Waldric. “So Harv, all this magic gun business. Like, what do you think? You’re ‘cool’ now, but you ever going to be rad enough to make your own?”
>>
>>44992743

Harvey gives you an expressionless look. “Uh huh.”

You give him a hard slap on the back. “You got real gumption, kid. I like it,” you say.

Harvey lets out a small groan of discomfort from the chummy strength of your back-slap.

You turn your attention back to Orias, who is examining the weapons in a new light. “So what’s my 100% brand Zhermaec assault rifle thing do though?” you ask, gesturing at it with a claw. “What do you think it does again?”

“I can’t say,” he says, stooping in toward the gun in question, where it lies on the table. He points at the script etched into the wood and metal of the weapon. “This though. I’ve only seen writing like this once before. This is shadow tongue – walker writing.”

Harvey is particularly interested in this fact. “It’s Verwelkan writing?”

Orias affirms this with a silent glance.

Your brother picks up the gun. “I call dibs on testing this one,” he says, shouldering the rifle and checking the sights. He reaches over for the scope, still in its paper wrapping, to attach it to the weapon.
>>
>>44992772

“Hold off there Rambo,” you say, reaching across the table and picking up the plain steel spear in the back. You show it off to Orias. “Did you check out this spear of destiny? Always takes me like ten minutes to find it.”

Orias inspects the length of the spear before accepting it from your hands. He turns away in a swift movement, spinning the weapon about and executing a series of short but potent thrusts forward. He tosses it in the air to test its weight, and snatches it back out of the air with ease. “It’s not a spear,” he says, gripping it tightly to test its rigidity. “It’s an Izhowak spine.” A lemony excitement sneaking out from under his purposeful reservation.

“Cool,” you say.

“They’re Verwelkian creatures,” he explains, sounding more lively than he did just a minute ago. “They roam along the borders of the abyssal plains, where there’s light enough still to see by. It’s been over two centuries since a hunter pursued an Izhowak and survived to best it.”

>I just now realized you’re a huge nerd.

Addendum, the shadows inside the engravings themselves would probably be best. Failing that, the shadows inside the gun. Failing that, just use the shadow cast by the gun itself. If none of those work we'll have to go and talk to the shadows from the trunk we found it in and that's not gonna help much even if they do translate it because they'll probably just speak German the whole damn time.

Talking to the shadows is a risky thing, though - the backlash if we're unsuccessful could massively fuck us up while we're trying to stay fairly cool and calm for the lake spirit fight.

Not saying we shouldn't, just not right now.

By the way Languid, as a /k/ommando I love this quest but you got a few aspects of our new guns wrong. You don't have to worry about finding special ammo for them or anything like that. All the commercially available 8mm ammo is at similar pressures to WWII ammo and will work fine in both rifles. The Gewer 98 is an incredibly strong action that could handle any sort of ammo we decide to put in it anyway (most modern hunting rifles are heavily based on it). I'm a little worried about the FG-42 though. They were designed to be as light as possible so they're a bit flimsy. Barring magical durability improvements we should be a bit careful about abusing it during demon-y combat.

We actually have really great darkvision, it's just the light vision that's fucked. Really it's pretty damn impressive for a Verwelken to have eyes that are just nearsighted with light instead of getting burned to ash.
>>
>>44993683

>thinking we wouldn't be a BETTER murder machine if we could direct our rages, see far-away targets, and not catch on fire from the sun

Though this makes me wonder whether Mom meant for us to handle the violence and Nevada the administration when we inherited the Imperiacy.
>>
>>44993618

Thanks for the feedback. I try to do my research, but there's only so much I can do. Makes sense that a century-old bolt-action would be more resilient than the special snowflake parachuist battle rifle anyway.
>>
>>44993841
We will learn to direct our rages in time and that is when our enemies will truly tremble. While we have some disabilities from playing at eugenics, as a total we are massively at an advantage because of it.

You look at the alleged spine with doubt. “Aren’t spines supposed to be... I don’t know, made of bone or something? That’s metal.”

Orias doesn’t seem to understand what you’re getting at. “It is bone,” he says, holding it out for you to look at.

You take the spear again, though you’re not seeing it. “It’s steel or something,” you say.

“That’s because Izhowaks have steel bones,” Harvey informs you.

Oh. That makes sense, you guess. You grip the spear – the spine – and wave it around a bit. You’re not as coordinated as Orias, but you usually don’t know what you’re doing until you get some adrenaline in your system. Also this whole wielding blades and spears is sort of still new to you, even if you’ve been doing it almost for a whole year now.

“What’s so special about Izhowaks anyway?” you ask, getting used to the feel of the weapon in your claws. “I mean metal bones yeah, but why can’t a party of bad-a demon hunters mount one on a hearth?”

But the spine, it’s light and fast now that you’re playing around with it. You can totally imagine janking up some dude’s day by shoving the spike through his throat. And then it’d be all like, jugular hit, and he’d be all like, aaagh, and then it’d spray all over your face. Your mouth waters at the image of it. (Bloodlust: Subdued) (-1 Sanity: 93)

“Sierra?” comes Orias’s voice.

“Yeah she’s gone,” Harvey replies. “You’re going to have to repeat everything you just said.”

You pull yourself out of your vampiric fantasy, slamming the butt of the spear to the ground and pivoting to look at the two jerks. “I was listening!” you say, sounding over forceful to your own ears. Okay, hold off a bit. Tone it down. You compose yourself and assume a more conversational tone. “What’s it you said again?”
>>
>>44994437

“That there are many hellish creatures with armor plating and strong bones,” he says. “Izhowaks aren’t dangerous because of their brutish strength or otherworldly speed. They’re dangerous because they can be multiple places simultaneously. One can only be killed by slaying its three or four forms in the same instant.”

You recognize the symptoms of a fanboy. “You'd totally go for hunting for one, wouldn't you,” you say.

“One day,” he says, “when I’m at peace with my experiences in life. Going on a hunt like that is not something to be undertaken lightly – and especially not without a companion whom you can trust with your soul.”

It's hard to remember this is real life. Things are so much more intense about everything than you got used to growing up. “Great,” you say in an annoyed tone. “Now I want an Izhowak for myself.” Sounds like you need to get a few landwells in Verwelkia.

Reeber gives you a plaintive look.

“Don’t worry boy,” you say, shoving his face away from you, “no high-falutin’ two-places at once shadow monster is going to replace you. Not being coated with spines is one of your strong points. How’d you get belly rubs then?”

The hellhound barks in reply. What a dog thing to do. (-1 Stress: 23)
>>
>>44994462

It's then that you notice Harvey peering at you through the scope to the FG-42. He’s temporarily suspended efforts to attach it to the weapon itself.

“What’s up?” you ask.

“Have a look for yourself,” says Harvey, handing it to you.

You take the scope, look through it toward the ceiling. Nothing seems out of the ordinary, other than the weird crosshairs of the scope itself.

“No, look at me,” he says.

You let your target fall from the rafters to Harvey. He surprises you by being all gloried out, glamors dropped, with wings and white fire-like hair. Wait. But how’s he have his wings out if he’s still got a t-shirt on? You lower the scope and look at him curiously. Harvey just stands there with a stupid grin, looking totally mortal or whatever.

Wait.

You bring up the scope again, this time keeping both eyes open. Through the old scope is demonbane Harvey. To your unaided eye – if you’re not counting prescription glasses – he’s fully wrapped up human Harvey.

>Cool.

Sierra's comments on Reeber's behaviour remains my favourite aspect of this quest.

I still giggle whenever I remember the "but he's a foreign dog, so he probably wouldn't understand any dog languages you know" line.
>>
“Wow, now I can violate people's privacy while I'm murdering them,” you say, alternatively switching eyes and seeing angel Harvey and regular Harvey.

“What is it?” asks Orias, feeling left out of the loop.

“It cuts through glamors,” says Harvey. “It’s a glamor-cutting scope.”

“No, there’s got to be a cooler name for it than that,” you argue. “It’s like... some kind of full-spectrum scope. Like a... a spectral scope.” You smile sharply to yourself. “I spy with my little eye... an Orias.” You turn your peeper to the nearby demon, eager to see his true form.

Orias suddenly becomes badass as all get out. Huge night-black leathery wings, fingers terminating in deadly grey claws, curving pale horns jutting out from his forehead, bone-white skin and an eerily glowing green crown, comprised of several small circles fixed in the air before his forehead – his forearms and lower legs fit uncomfortably under his clothes, no doubt dark chitin plates armoring them up to the nines.

Cool. “I know what I’m taking with me,” you say to yourself.

“May I have a look?” asks Orias, holding out a razor sharp hand. While his claws lack the mightiness of Ranthix’s, their sharpness gives yours a run for their money.

You hand over the spectral scope, confronted once more by his less badass vampire cowboy look. “Drop it and you die,” you say, semi-seriously, already missing the death-metal version of Orias.
>>
>>44996689

“I’ll take care,” he says, taking his turn spying on you and Harvey. “Glamors are some of the strongest forms of magic there are. Revealers like this – only great noble houses can afford the riches to obtain one,” he says, impressed.

Harvey raises his eyebrows. “Or Chancellors,” he notes.

You scowl. “Or, you know, Imperiates.”

“Or those,” he agrees.

As Orias turns the scope over in his hands, you start thinking of other applications for the spectral scope. Like spectrally spying on Wolfgang. You feel suddenly very interested in the idea of catching a glimpse of his no doubt wicked skull face and horns. You snicker to yourself at the idea.

It’s probably wrong to consider spying on Wolf like that, but it’s not like he has to know. And it’s not like you’ve never sort of checked up on him when he didn’t know you were around.

>No, yeah, it’s definitely wrong. You should try to respect his personal space. You’ll see that side of him sooner or later.
>Nah, relationships are about... trust. Or something like that. Maybe you’ll give Wolf one last chance and ask him later. If he's still weird about it, well, maybe then you’ll rethink things.

No, yeah, it’s definitely wrong. As tantalizing as the prospect is, you should try to respect his personal space. You’ll see that side of him sooner or later. You can exercise self-control for once – you already got laid, so. And he’d just find out anyway if you did use your magic artefact to see past his glamors. He’s really good about figuring out that kind of stuff, and it’s not worth getting him worked up about it. Happy Wolf is good Wolf.

You make yourself stop fantasizing about Wolf’s stupid demon face, and get to shooting your new old guns. And since Harvey and Orias are around, you guess they can help.

--

After a good amount of testing on paper targets, you come to some intriguing conclusions.

Your dad’s Walther P38 handgun does indeed shoot bullets, but it is not without idiosyncrasies. Each shot put on target sprouts a violent black shadow tendril that whips about, seeking something to strangle. So yeah. Sort of idiosyncratic. Fortunately (or unfortunately?) the angry wisps of darkness dissipate after a few seconds.

The Gewehr is a lot different from the rifles you’re used to handling, being made of heavy wood and steel instead of fancy lightweight plastics. It feels reassuringly solid in your hands, like you could beat somebody to death with it without somehow breaking it. It is a good feeling. It fires like you’d expect a super reliable bolt-action rifle to fire, though it turns out to require a lot more muscle to chamber the round than you were expecting. Hardcore.

As a condenser though, after you and Harvey give it a try, you can definitely think up some uses for the thing. After pushing enough power into the weapon, it rattles and enhances nearby shadows. Or maybe it dims nearby light. Anyway, its spell makes everything darker for about seven seconds, like somebody turned the dimmer down by half. Except there is no dimmer in the warehouse, and the rifle dims the bright blue sky outside instead.

More shadows to work with. Your dad probably pulled all kinds of crap with this thing.

You’re not totally certain what’s special about the FG-42, besides the fact that it’s badass and has a spectral scope that can see through glamors. You’re not sure if it can cut through all illusions as well, but when Orias makes a fake chair for you to examine, it appears an odd bluish hue through the glass of the scope. So that’s also handy, you guess.

Nothing weird seems to happen when you shoot out paper targets with the rifle, even when you prod and poke at it with power. It doesn’t seem to want to accept outside energy, despite it humming with magic when you use it. You figure it’s finer abilities will manifest through further testing or if you decide to take it into the field with you.

You also do a quick sparring session with Orias and Harvey, utilizing the spear/spine after Orias assures you it should be safe.

And that’s where it starts getting weird.

Even when you’re holding the thing, if you’re not keeping your full attention on it, it seems to always be positioned at a different angle when it comes back to your attention. With some practice, given your attention is lax enough, you find you can perform some interesting tricks with the makeshift spear. Like, you can hurl it through a bullet-ridden paper target, or have somebody knock it out of your hands, and then find it still in your grip after you order Reeber to go fetch it

You’re too wary to risk hitting anybody too hard with the Izhowak spine, unsure of how it might react to living creatures. That test you’ll have to save that for something you strongly disagree with.

The afternoon passes away as you try out your dad’s junk.

Orias takes note of the dimness outside the windows of the batcave. “When are you planning on leaving the city?” he asks.

You watch Harvey fire off a few rounds from the handgun, black whips snapping out from the target and knocking over nearby boxes and target stands before dissolving in the light. “Pretty soon. Probably should head back home,” you say, checking your phone for the time. “Isaac and Borya are chaperoning the whole spirit quest mini-road-trip thing.”

“You should tell Dad I’m coming,” says Harvey. “He’d say no if I asked, but he’ll just moan and groan if it’s you asking.”

“Hey,” you say, “I’m the one deciding who is and who isn’t coming.” Except Isaac. He invited himself.

“If you need representation from the conclave, I’m willing to join you,” says Orias.

It's a nice offer, but you’re not sure exactly who you’re bringing. Though you’re kind of sure you’re not bringing Moriah. Her negative vibes about great power and great responsibility will not be helpful for the next 24 hours.

We should bring the ever-loyal Ranthix. Maybe Orias, since he offered? Let's bring a small-ish team of our heaviest hitters and responsible adults.
>>
>>44998386
We should bring Harv and Ranthix too
>>
>>44998386

Maybe bring Xathix along?

Uh no, he's too squishy for this

Get the sister angel

I have no idea who else to suggest.

>>Who to invite for spirit quest (?) Ranthix, Moriah, Harv

Moriah knows he some spirits, she could be helpful.
>>
>>44998548
Moriah is kind of out on this one, she dislikes how rapidly Sierra is growing in power.
>>
>>44998386
>Ranthix.
>>
>>44998386
>Who to invite for spirit quest (?)

Bring Harvey with, he wants to go. Reeber too of course.

Orias can come with, maybe Ulam as well, he seems like he'd have some insights. We could take Ranthix but I think we have enough brute force.

Maybe Xan or Xath too.

You turn down Orias’s offer as you start packing things back up for the night. “I don’t know. This is more kind of personal stuff,” you say. “You should probably stay here. Conclave needs at least one responsible adult looking over things.”

“I wish my cousin met those qualifications,” he replies. “May fortune favor you on your journey.”

You throw him a mock salute. “Right back at ya.”

Orias leaves you, Harvey, and Reeber to close up the batcave.

Despite him asking, you don’t feel it appropriate to drag Harvey along. Nor Rowan, for that matter. You’ve put her through enough paces. And you’re not sure exactly how she might help, given Isaac will be there too. No, of anyone you can invite along, there’s only one person who you think will do a good job of keeping you on the level during the outing. Ranthix – your most loyal thultal.

You send him a text with the information, to which he replies (via text):

I am not unaware of this plot, spawnling. It will be a glory to witness your forthcoming seizure of power. I will safeguard the realization of your freshly hastened ambitions.

Ranthix the Terrible

What a boss. This is one text you will be saving forever.

After arriving home, you and Isaac finalize preparations to leave. It’s going to be quite a trip, so it’s important to be prepared. You already have the basics ready – food, emergency clothes, and random important things. Isaac has a bunch of stuff himself, even some specialty anti-spirit weaponry just in case things get dicey.

Though you guess it comes down to how much hardware you want to bring to the party. Isaac’s got the big guns covered, you guess, as does Ranthix, probably. But what are you bringing? You have to travel light (kind of), since you’re not sure you can bring a car through the portal. Motorcycles are another thing – you’re fairly certain you can manage a small group along with their bikes.
>>
>>44998386
> Ranthix
> Reeber (animal instincts yo)
> Orias
> Borislav

Harvey and Ro can come if they want as well, but I would prefer Harvey over Ro.

I straight up do not trust Ulam enough yet. The dude is on our side, yes, but it's because of what we are not who we are and I'm skeptical of that shizzle. Also, not sure how he gets along with Demonbane since he's got that religious fanatic shizzle going on.

You figure you’ll just bring the lot of it and decide later. You pack up Zelathis the lightning sword, the spear of destiny, the Flustirin oracle 8-ball thing, your enchanted chainmail, and Waldric’s deflector chain-bracelet. A lot of the smaller items fit neatly in your satchel pack, despite their combined volume exceeding the size of the pack entirely.

After some thought, you go ahead and add the Sotark Elixer to your bag, your super reaction-time potion thing. Since you’re sort of rushing ahead without doing the necessary research, a little extra clarity might go a long way.

As for guns, you make no decisions and add your dad’s old spectral-scoped rifle and his tentacle spewing pistol to Isaac’s pack, as well as the Gewehr. More guns means more choices at the place in question. You never regretted bringing too many guns. Usually it’s you didn’t bring more guns.

Packed up, you pull on a pair of fresh jeans, switch out for a comfy flannel shirt, and don your bewinged fire-proof jacket. After checking that you are indeed as cool-looking as possible in the mirror, you head down and rendezvous with Isaac in the garage. He’s got your motorcycle tied down with a bunch of gear, as is his.

The garage door is open, and the empty, dark street outside beckons – as does Borislav’s beat up pickup. The deputy marshal is up from Muir, and having conferenced with Isaac, is ready to head on down with the both of you. Reeber’s excited and loaded up in the front seat with Borya, ready to get undeway. Sharing the hellhound’s impatience, Borya hits the horn a couple times to get you to hurry up.
>>
So it's gonna be a bunch of really powerful old men and then Sierra and her pup.

About Isaac’s motorcycle though. You guess he keeps it somewhere else usually, because you’ve never seen it before. It’s painted a dull bronze with white detailing, with a sort of retro-flare to it. You don’t know what you’re looking at, but it’s old.

Isaac zips up his leather bomber jacket and places his helmet underneath the crook of his arm, turning to look at you as he mounts up. He looks like some kind of 50’s parody of a motorcyclist, what with his pristine jeans, riding boots, and vintage leather jacket. “Ready to hit the road, sunshine?” he asks.

>What kind of bike is that?
>Hell yes.
>Well, I guess if you think you can keep up.
>Cut that out. It’s the middle of the night. Sunshine’s like a morning thing.
>Y’know, it’s kind of embarrassing to have to ride this piece of crap next to that monster.
>So wait again. How’s the Reeber dog thing work out if we’re riding bikes, anyway?
>I’m starting to think I did my road trip thing wrong. Not enough mad-max level stuff going on.
>Isaac, you’re like the lamest person ever.
>Isaac, you’re like the coolest person ever.
>Mount up and hit the road.

Sword and Spear. The spear is clearly dimensionally fucky, Ricky, so it should be able to stab ghosts and Samsquatches no problem.

We should totes try to power up Reeber from this, or get him some sort of badass dog armour.

Hi-Ex is never a bad thing to have along either, proof that good things come in small packages.

Probably some smoke grenades and shit.

And I'd say bring the Spectral Scope rifle.

Should we bring herbs or an offering of some sort for the spirit? We can do meat, spices and incense also seem to be a popular deal. We can wait to see what the spirit is like as well before offering if possible.

I guess Sierra wanted a brief testosterone-fueled road trip after her trans-America ladies exclusive road adventure.

Yes, I obviously jumped the damn gun there. (haha)

I mean, I can't argue it. Although I would still like to check and see if we can bring anything as a gift for the Spirit. Maybe build it a Cat Shrine?

I think you had a self-reflective monologue a few threads ago wondering if Isaac should be considered a hipster or some kind of anti-hipster, for just having maintained the same style for so long it came back into fashion.

Anyway, I think I'll call it quits here for the night. I have to wake up tomorrow and do things. Really looking forward to the next few threads with you guys.

I'll probably run again next Saturday. I'll keep you posted on Twitter.
