Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you explored the tunnels beneath your family estate and discovered a strange device forgotten to time.

It is currently the 26th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

You watch passively as runes carve themselves into the spaces left blank in the arrays nearest bronze dome at the center of the room and the enormous lump of twisted iron now rising from within. Before your very eyes the tendrils crowning the strange device begin to unfold, stretching almost as if the fingers of some monstrous hand until they embed themselves in the stone pillars framing it on either side, all save one. The central tendril instead stretches upward, its jagged tip just barely touching the carved stone hanging above.

There's a clap of thunder as lightning shoots through the iron, arcing between the fingers of iron and casting the chamber momentarily in stark contrast. You see Profectus, his face contorted into an expression of utter disbelief, with his stone hand still pressed against one of the pillars. You're going to need to have a word with him if you both survive this, you gave him one directive and that was not to touch anything. Apparently that wasn't clear enough for him.

You try to retreat to the edge of the room but find you can't go far. Some sort of barrier has erected itself around the device, a thin pane of vys connecting each of the pillars together and sealing the runic array off completely from the rest of the chamber. It reminds you of a less destructive version of that field of energy you found erected within the enchanter's palace, somewhere within the void.

A slit appears in the 'palm' of the deformed iron hand in the center of the room, slowly extending until it reaches from the stone platform the device rest upon to the carved stone dangling above. It widens, revealing a hallway shrouded in white fog. On the left you see the vaguest shadows of the room you're in, pale reflections on the other side of the screen. To the right, innumerable tiny holes reveal glimpses of the endless black of the void. It is the space between your layer of reality and the next.
(1/2)
>>
Curious, you've only ever seen it as a disembodied soul. You didn't think it possible to access physically, yet here you are staring at a doorway into the space between. Fog spills across the floor, spreading almost as if a living thing across the floor of the chamber. It meets the barrier trapping you inside and recoils, thin strands of fog probing the thin field of vys to no avail. The mist seems to avoid yourself and Profectus as well, giving the latter a particularly wide berth.

>Try to find a way to deactivate the device so you can get out of here.
>Step through the doorway, see where this grey hallway leads.
>Send Profectus through the doorway, he got you into this mess.

You're not physically accessing the void, you're accessing the space between the void and your reality. In Mik's experience, holes in reality usually skip the space between and go straight for the void.

You step cautiously towards the portal, pushing your hand through first. It crosses the threshold without encountering any resistance, this truly is an immense hole in reality, but it seems to be contained. It's not expanding anymore, and seems stable. You briefly share a glance with Profectus before stepping into the hall beyond, a muffled shouting reaching you from the other side.

The portal snaps shut a moment later, trapping you inside. Where once sat a yawning chasm into the base reality there was no only more of the endless grey hallway, stretching on and on without any discernible end nor any obvious deviation. Hopefully your companions can figure out how to reopen the portal, you quite dislike the idea of having to rip your way out of this rather dull expanse.

Curious, you try to reach out to them via the brooches. Unfortunately you can't feel their thoughts brushing against your own. As you begin to wander down the length of the hall, you begin to ponder why it is that your brooch doesn't seem to work within the void, or within this space between. What is it about the brooches that requires them dwell on the same level of reality as the rest of the brooches in the network to function properly.

You've been walking for several minutes, lost in thought, by the time you begin to notice something odd. Every step you take the scenery on your left changes completely, the grey shadows of the mortal realm shifting with even the slightest of movement on your part. One moment you seem to be peering into an empty expanse, and the next you're standing in the shadow of a plateau.

(1/2)
>>
Frowning, you continue on your way. It seems unlikely that you'd be able to find your way back, even if you wished to. You'd likely overshoot the chamber and end up in the middle of the ocean, or lost in the Pa'vala. After all, you don't exactly know which way you're traveling. You could be headed north, towards the former lands of Rhynia, or perhaps you're headed east into Elaudia. Hopefully time will tell.

Ten minutes later you spy in the distance a light, which as you draw closer reveals itself to be a doorway not unlike the one you entered this hallway through. It stretches from the flat plane you walk across to the distant sky above, effectively an 'end' of the hallway, though you've little doubt it continues on the other side of the portal.

The closer you get, the more distinctly you can make out voices on the other side. A muffled conversation, snatches of music echoing distantly through the hall, and what might be a child's wailing. By the time you stand upon the threshold you can even make out shadowy figures milling about on the other side, a crowd's gathered on the other side and they seem to be discussing the portal, though the conversation is so muffled you can barely make out the words being said.

“...inside...what...”
“Perhaps...first...”
“No...danger-...-uate be-...”

Well, no sense dawdling. What are they going to do, stab you? A minor inconvenience at the absolute worst. You probably wouldn't even bleed. With as much confidence as you can muster you stride out of the portal, finding yourself standing upon a platform quite dissimilar to the one you entered the grey hallway through.

You're flanked to either side by majestic spires which seem to maintain the portal, streams of vys drifting through the room to provide the no doubt immense energy required to keep the doorway open. The chamber itself is expansive, stone walls carved intricately with depictions of men and women bowed in prayer before a six-armed feminine figure, no doubt Pani. The domed ceiling similarly depicts a woman, her four breast bare, with her innumerable arms spread in a welcoming embrace. If you had to guess this was some sort of temple complex.

A crowd of guards, swathed in blue cloaks and wearing golden armor, block the stairwell deeper into the complex. Their long axes are crafted of some black material you can't immediately identify and banded with gold, they don't strike you as particularly practical weapons. At their head is a man wielding a golden mask, without any obvious eye holes, and wielding two long sickle shaped swords.

However, you're more interested in the two figures immediately in front of you. One, a rather slender young woman dressed in a manner you'd typically associate with alchemist and the other a hunch-backed old man with a long white beard, his lower lip pierced by an enormous golden disk and his white beard woven with similar ornaments. He's swathed in deep purple ropes, trimmed with gold. A Vatis no doubt, and likely a powerful one.

A silence has descended upon the room, which is ultimately broken by the sword-wielding man at the head of the contingent of guards. His voice sounds hollow and unnatural filtering through the thin slits in his helmet. “Men, arrest this intruder.”

The guards behind him are hesitant to respond, only a few creeping towards you and even those lacking in the necessary enthusiasm. The old Vatis grunts, the guards' feet suddenly encased in thick blocks of ice. He does not speak, but rather his thoughts drift through your own and presumably those of the others in the room. {Let the man speak first, Captain. Our Mother does so value patience.}

>Offer your sincerest apologies for the intrusion, ask where on Earth you are.
>Perhaps now's a good time to jump back through the portal, it still yawns open behind you.

You glance between the elderly Vatis and the armored guards standing by the stairwell, frowning. “My apologies for the intrusion.” You bow low, touching two fingers to your forehead and chest. “Mikhael of the noble house Abdul-Hakim. A pleasure to make your acquaintance.” You stand straight, drawing yourself up proudly. “I was tampering with-”

The woman interrupts, her expression a mixture of confusion and perhaps a touch of fear. “Wait, the Aghtaki? Was not a son of the Abdul-Hakims banished for slandering the Shah?”

You're not sure whether to be flattered they've heard of you at all or annoyed they've yet to hear of your accomplishments since. Just how far out in the backwater of the Shahdom are you? Regardless you smile as charmingly as you can manage. “The very same, although I would clarify that I am merely a former Aghtaki. The Shah has absolved me of my alleged crimes for saving his life from assassins who would have seen his younger sister inherit.”

Turning your attention once more to the elderly Vatis you clear your throat. “As I was saying, I was tampering with artifacts far beyond my understanding and opened a doorway into the space between our reality and the void. I stepped through the doorway and now find myself here. Unfortunately, I can't say with any certainty where 'here' is. Might you be able to aid me in that regard?”

The blind old man nods his head subtly, his voice whispering through your thoughts once more. {The Grand Temple of Pani at Majhaya. As Varistha of this temple, I would extend to you my hospitality if you so wished.}

(1/2)
>>
You can't say you're terribly familiar with any 'Grand Temple of Pani'. You vaguely recall reading about Majhaya, a vast temple complex built within the face of a cliff and renowned for the abundant water supplied by its sacred spring, which supplies the near-by city of Apejo with enough water to support its populace. You're actually fairly close to the border of the Shahdom, and Elaudia beyond.

Another voice intrudes upon your thoughts, Darzi's this time. {Thank the Gods, Mik. Profectus told us you'd been swallowed up by that portal. Are you alright?}

You glance briefly between the Varistha and the armed guards behind him. {I suppose I'm fine, though my circumstances could be better. Hold a moment, would you?}

With that you sever the connection and turn your attention once more to the Varistha and his associates.

Well, Zahak can fly. So he'd be able to join up with you if you waited a few days. He's able to cross the distance much faster than any of your other companions. He could also fit through the portal, but getting him through the tunnels would be some difficult shit.

The carriage would be lost if you used this method to get from one place to the other, but it's with your brother at the family estate. It's (probably) in good hands.

Geared up Darzi vs Geared up Chrys when?

That is literally a shortcut to it and we can even fit our son with earth magic.

You still have obligations in Nazir you need to see fulfilled, but this seems a good way to rapidly close the distance between Nazir and Elaudia, should you be willing to leave your carriage behind. Getting Zahak through would also be somewhat difficult, but with Chryssa and Fulvia's help you should be able to manage it.

Thus you bow low, adopting an apologetic tone. “I am afraid I still have much to attend to elsewhere, my friends and companions, as well as my son, are still on the other side of the portal and I'm afraid to have them join me now I would be forced to leave one of them behind. Perhaps in the near future we'll see one another again, but until that time I must refuse your gracious hospitality.”

“This is weird.” The woman suddenly blurts out, her brows drawn together in confusion. “You, an Aghtaki, leap out of a glowing doorway of light and discuss it as if it's the most normal thing in the world. Do you so frequently tamper with the remnants of our ancestors that they have ceased to impress you?”

You glance behind you at the portal into the space between your reality and the void. “To be perfectly honest, yes.” You turn your attention again to the woman, shrugging your shoulders. “This isn't even the most impressive thing I've seen this week, let alone since I began my wandering.” Glaring at her, you briefly add. “And I'm not an Aghtaki, I already told you I was granted pardon by the Shah himself. Unless you presume to question his authority I'd suggest you cease your accusations.”

The Varistha's voice cuts sharply through your thoughts, ending any further argument. {I wish you luck then, Child of Pani. Should our paths cross again I only hope it is under more pleasant circumstances.}

Child of Pani, that's a new one. You don't think you've ever heard reference to Pani as anyone's mother, though you don't deny she's often depicted as motherly. Regardless you reach out to your companions via the brooches, ready to return. {Profectus, open the portal again. I'm coming back.}

There's a pulse of vys from the doorway behind you, which you take as your cue. Stepping across the threshold you find yourself once again in that unerringly straight hallway, flanked on your left by the black expanse of the void and on your right by the faint shadows of the room you only just left. You stride with much more confidence through the space between the layers of reality and find you reach your destination in only a few minutes, much faster than your previous journey.

You emerge into the vast chamber you started in. Mortia has finally managed to catch up with your party. She, Darzi, and Fulvia are waiting for you just outside the thin barrier of vys separating the runic array from the rest of the chamber. Mist has spilled out to cover the floor but it flows away from you as you descend the stairs, the portal finally closing with a soft 'pop' and the light fading from the runes covering the floor.

The barrier falls as Profectus steps away from the pillar, Darzi bombarding you with questions almost immediately. “What did you see on the other side? Where did it take you? Are you alright?”

You step off the platform the lump of twisted iron sits upon, lightning still arcing between its seven misshapen tendrils as you advance upon Profectus, for the moment ignoring Darzi. Profectus opens his mouth to speak, but before he can spit out any of his excuses you slap the side of his helmet, your gauntlet striking the metal no doubt ringing his ears. “You had one job, Profectus! I told you not to touch anything, and but moments later you activate the entire runic array! What if it had been a weapon? What if we'd both been reduced to ash by your carelessness?”

He's speechless, this is probably the first time you've ever actually yelled at him for anything, seriously at least. You can see that he feels guilty for so rapidly disobeying you when both of your lives were at risk, but the very next moment you pull him into a hug, clapping him resoundingly on the back. “You're a genius, my degenerate friend! You've found us a shortcut to Elaudia! It took not but a few minutes for me to reach Majhaya, barely a day from the jungle's edge! You've saved us weeks of traveling, Profectus.”

You release him, turning to Darzi and finally answering her questions while leaving Profectus utterly confused. “The device seems to use the space between what most people erroneously think of as reality and the void to allow rapid transit from one point in space to another. Distance in this space between doesn't seem as rigid as distance in the mortal realm, so crossing nearly the whole of the Shahdom required only a few minutes rather than weeks of travel.”

“I found myself in Majhaya, as I've said. Apparently it's a rather large temple dedicated to Pani. The Varistha was waiting for me with a number of the temple's guards and he extended his hospitality, hopefully we can use the portal to reach Elaudia much sooner than we would have otherwise.” You finish recounting the rather brief tale, tacking on at the end. “Oh, and I'm quite fine. Has any progress been made in tracking down the slave's killer?”

Mortia and Darzi share a glance, the former shaking her head. “I was following a trail of bloody hoof prints but I lost track of them on the third level. I assumed this would be the logical place for the creature to make its nest, since it's so saturated in vys. Typically creatures, especially those of an unnatural persuasion, are attracted to places like this. That's what I've read at least.”

Darzi chimes in as well. “I found evidence on the floor below that something was dwelling in one of the side tunnels, discarded bones, clumps of hair, and an unsettling amount of blood. However, I didn't get a chance to investigate very far before I heard Profectus' crying-”

He interrupts. “I wasn't crying! I was calling for you two!” He states defensively. “I would never shed tears for the disappearance of this madman.”

She smirks, folding her arms in front of her chest. “Sure you wouldn't, Profectus. Whatever you need to tell yourself. Anyway, I could show you the tunnel if you'd like.”

When you receive no answer, you assume that's an agreement. “By my understanding, vys is not truly magic. Rather, vys is simply the result of the 'husk' degrading. The large the husk built up around your divine shard becomes, the more vys you can toss around. However, if one were to find a way to do so casting directly with the substance which makes up the husk would be a far more powerful and efficient way of casting.”

The lower mouth speaks. “Well, you're partially correct. Casting with the husk, the leaving of divinity I suppose, is how the spirits employ magic. However, it is not exactly efficient for mortals. It is certainly more powerful, but even casting a simple spell using the husk is more draining by several orders of magnitude. Still more worrying is that with each spell you cast, some small aspect of your memory is lost. That being said, the most powerful feats of magic can only be accomplished by using the husk directly, so you're not wrong. You're just not wholly right either.”

The lowest head seems confused. “Does a harpist create music or does her instrument? Is it not true that one without the other would be useless? Magic is the same way. The strings of reality, as you've dubbed them, are useless without Vatis to play them. Well, not useless. They bind things together and give us life. However, if that is all they were capable of would not existence be boring indeed? You are not the one that creates fire in your example, but nor are you simply manipulating vys into clever patterns. You are running your fingers along the strings of a harp and producing a melody.”

"True" Magic will allow us to cast without vys, manipulating the strings of reality deliberately. Remember how enchanters can reshape reality with their thoughts, steel principles from objects, and twist the void into their personal realms? That's true magic. Thats what we need.

>The metal and earth insight we got from the crown must be the true magic too
possible but unconfirmed

The DE manipulation was likely just "true" Magic + advanced aspects of other elements to apply it in a certian way.

almost like using water magic to make fire sticky, only with DE magic and several "regular" types of magic

>>44977590
I think the main point to be gained is that "True" magic can be blended and supplemented by regular magic, and vice versa.

That's what we did with the crown.
>>
>>44977541
I was thinking the same thing
>>
>>44977677
>>44977594
Actually, that just involved divine material manipulation. We didn't cast a spell, we just used a shard of divinity, previously a part of Surya himself, to destroy the attack of spirits.

>>44223332
“He was less than willing to sacrifice the shards, as they were part of his 'heart'. To conceptualize the gods as anything resembling mortal is a fallacy of the highest order, but suffice to say the shard in your soul was once the part of Surya that made him a god.

True magic would allow us to adjust and influence the strings of reality without Vys. Manipulation is innate, True Magic is external.
>>
So how would we get the Nature and Water insight for true magic?
>>
>>44977710
I remember it being said that we used our shard to do things, and those things we described like regular magic. So i tok from it that we were using our divinity and shaping it with regualr magic to to make it more powerful/potent enough to affect the spirit.

Specifically Metal in the reinforcing of our shard
>>
>>44977744
I think you're missing the point.
>>
post update faggot
>>
>>44977780
That is still using the principles of regular, vanilla magic to reinforce an internal aspect of ourself; namely, the Shard of Divinity borne from Surya. We had to burn Vys, there was a spell, and there was a cost; no strings of reality were manipulated, only our internal aspects and resources.

True Magic is the manipulation of strings, not ourselves.
>>
>>44977590
There is literally nothing there about the manipulation of DE being fire/metal/earth. in fact, the theory provided these is contradictory.

It's basically saying that vys is shit-tier magic fuel. The husk of your soul is better, but that contains your memories, so you probably shouldn't spend it casually, even if it will restore itself the next time you meditate.

It's also saying that using the very core of your soul, where divine essence is, works even better, but that's your personality. Your very being. So don't use your own, use someone else's.

Oh, and spirits are entirely made out of soul husk, so that's the reason enchantment made out of spirits is so damn tits.

By the way, I just realized that Profectus' arm is probably using the husks of the spirits bound within to blast things, which is why it's so powerful despite Profectus being so shitty at magic.
>>
>>44977800
It obvious the insights we've been getting are going toward the manipulation of the DE and we've gotten all the insights but Nature and Water. How do we get them?
>>
>>44977827
All magic is manipulating the strings. Manipulation of the strings requires Vys, traditionally shaped into the schools so we can classify. The "true magic" that I think we're all referring to is magic unbound by schools. we used Divinne Essence supplemented by our regular vys to cast magic that was both parts "true magic" and regular magic
>>
You clasp a hand to your chest, pretending to swoon. “Oh, Profectus. I'm so very touched by how much you care for me! Unfortunately my parents would never approve, they expect me to produce heirs and if I were to bed another man-”

He interrupts you. “Gross, Mik. Don't take it there. I had quite enough of that when I was in the army, let me tell you. You think us elves are degenerate? Humans are much worse. I knew a man who stuck his cock in a hole in the ground simply because he was bored. Let that sink in for a moment.” He spits on the ground, obviously disgusted. “Those animals simply cannot get enough of one another, be the object of their desires another man or one of their women. I fought alongside a human who'd only bed the ugliest whores simply because they were the cheapest, and the very next day he'd be in the throws of it with his tent companions. Disgusting, the lot of them.”

You've never seen Mortia so red in the face. You're not sure if she's embarrassed, angry, or some combination of the two. Her expression is one of utter shock, so you're leaning towards embarrassed. Personally you find it absolutely hilarious, a sentiment which Darzi seems to share.

Fulvia, her monocular glowing eye glancing between yourself, Darzi, and Profectus, forces her thoughts into your mind and judging by their obvious discomfort, the minds of your companions as well. {It is good to relieve stress before a battle, but typically the companions of soldiers were camp followers. Young men who chose to prostitute themselves, rather than fellow soldiers. The rape of young boys was also common in occupied areas of the frontier. You could have reported this soldier to your superiors and seen him punished for violating the rules against submitting to another man, had you so chosen.}

Profectus shoots Fulvia a glare. “It's flat out nasty, is what it is. I mean-”

You cut him off. “Come on, that's enough. You can argue about which of you are more degenerate later. We've got a monster to kill. Darzi, if you would be so kind.”

She bows in a rather overly elaborate fashion, flourishing her hand off to the side while touching two fingers to her forehead and chest. As a group the party begins to descend the stairs to the floor below, that acrid stench that always follows a lightning strike heavy in the air. Darzi leads you to a hall on the left side of this hall in a markedly degraded state of repair, the roof collapsed and only a rough tunnel dug through the rubble to provide access deeper into the complex.

Fortunately you note that it has been reinforced with metal in several places by Fulvia, so you doubt you have to fear it collapsing. Darzi goes through first, followed by yourself and Profectus, with Fulvia and Mortia taking up the rear. On the other side you see what Darzi was talking about. Bones are littered across the floor haphazardly and dried blood clings to every surface. You're assaulted by the overpowering stench of rot almost as soon as you stand up, though the beast responsible is nowhere to be seen.

Your party advances cautiously. A hundred feet into the tunnel there is a sharp turn, and on the other side you find yourself faced by a section of collapsed flooring, marble giving way to shattered rock and accumulated dirt and grime. You create a ball of light, devoid of flame or heat, and advance into the darkness of the tunnel below.

It isn't long before, following the twisting and turning of the tunnels, you begin to hear a series of sharp cracking sounds, like the branches of a tree snapping in a storm. Darzi's grip tightens around her spear, and Profectus steps forward with his shield held firmly in front of himself. Just around the bend the monster waits, and it's up to you to decide how you approach.

>Carefully, you might be able to get the drop on this creature and end it swiftly.

Maybe even use our magic to create an illusion of a creature to draw it out for an attack? Have Chryssa erode a pit for it to fall into chasing the illusion and then Fulvia spikes it from all sides with metal magic? I mean, we don't even know what we're going after here.

You focus, trying to bend the light around the corner to get a look at the creature. Really it's not much different from a simple illusion, just twisting the light to suit your needs, but you can't quite seem to get it right. At first you create a warped and distorted version of the room, and then half of it is reversed and the other half missing entirely. Finally you manage to get it right simply by forcing as much vys into the spell as rapidly as you possibly could, and then you get a good view of the monster you're hunting.

As you'd previously been told, two massive horns as those that rest atop an oxen's head rest upon its own. It's head is really four or five skulls smashed together, thick hide melded to the bone by no obvious means. Its arms are thick and muscular, really its entire upper body is massive, while its legs appear weak by comparison. The beast doesn't really have hands, rather three claws attached to its arms by metal rods and tendrils of flesh form the closest thing it has to a hand. There is absolutely no way this creature came to be naturally, the tampering of a Vatis or an Enchanter had to have been involved.

You reach into your cloak, grasping the polished wooden handle of your pistol, but notice something amiss. The hollow eyes of its skull peer back at you, glowing with internal yellow light. The creature sees you, you can feel its presence worming through your thoughts, infesting every crevice. It knows you're here.

You step around the corner, pistol leveled at where the beast ought to be, but you're staring at empty space. There's nothing but an empty chamber, bones littering the floor alongside a disembodied heart. The creature has vanished entirely.

You channel Nature magic in the hopes of revealing the creature but have little in the way of luck. There is a faint glimmer of yellow Vys, spreading slowly but degrading into white faster than it can spread. Whatever this creature is, it seems to spread corruption by its mere presence. You're about to cut the flow of vys when you feel a stabbing pain in your abdomen, and feel yourself being hurled through the air.
