You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

After some errrr.... "recent events", the Admiral had seen fit to give you some leave time to cool off. At first you were about to protest, but he had pointed out that currently, the USN had no shortage of destroyer shipgirls, so it wouldn't be a a serious issue if three of them took a couple of days off. It was also decided that White Plains would also accompany you, as well as Red and Sam as an "escort".

Heh, escorting escort ships. That was a funny one.

However, the USN didn't exactly have the same availability for cruisers, so Portland and San Diego had to stay behind at Hawaii.

However, things would be all well and good IF YOU COULD ACTUALLY DECIDE WHERE TO GO.

"All right!" Red grunts as she slaps a trio of travel brochures on the table. "Me and Sam here have narrowed down the the short list to just three spots: San Francisco, Los Angeles, or San Diego."

"Far enough away from the front that we won't affect current ops, but close enough we can be called back in case something happens." Sam explains. "Plus in my opinion Cali's got the best food."

"Hmmmmm." You frown and turn to the rest of Taffy 3. "Suggestions?"

"Oh! I want to go to San Diego!" White Plains' eyes sparkle. "That's where they Midway!"

"Midway?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Yes!" White Plains nods rapidly. "CV-41! She served from 1945 to 1992! Forty seven years of uninterrupted service!"

Dang, you've never seen her so enthusiastic about something before.

"Oh, I want to go to LA!" Johnston giggles. "That's where Hollywood is! I always wanted to see it!"

"That's where they're keeping Iowa's original hull, too." Heerman adds in. "We can totally go inside and check it out."

"Oooooh, I never knew you were so lewd, Heerie!" Johnston snickers.

"I'm not." Heerman sighs.

"Hrrrrm, well I kinda wanted to go to SF..." You mumble as you shuffle through the three travel brochures. "It's kinda my hometown and all..."

But JA was a decent, if underwhelming, entry in the franchise.
The story suffered from having to try and come up with something in the real world. Large scale conventional wars where the kind of dogfighting that makes for an exciting game don't happen in the modern day real world, that's the whole reason they invented Strangereal in the first place. And the real world setting wasn't his call, so it's not fair to blame him for it.

"All right, we'll make a compromise, then!" You grunt. "We got at least two days, right? We'll spend one day in Los Angeles and one day in San Diego! How does that sound?"

"Sounds okay to me!" Johnston nods happily.

"Sure." Heerman nods simply.

"E-even one day is enough!" White Plains smiles.

"Well, it looks like we got a plan, then!" Red grins. "Anyways, before we head out, I gotta lay down some GROUND RULES for behavior off base!"

"Ground rules?" You grimace.

"Yep!" Red nods. "Rule one, we travel INCOGNITO. That means you don't tell ANYBODY you're a shipgirl, and you don't show ANYBODY your shipgirl abilities or your Rig. Hell, don't even let them know you're from the Navy at all, while we're at it."

"Why?" You frown.

"Ehhhh, security reasons, mostly." Sam explains, leaning back in her chair. "There's quite a lot of people who don't really like us shipgirls, and quite a few who like us a bit too much. Plays out better for everybody if we just avoid them altogether. It also helps that you're all rather recently returned, so the public hasn't really had the chance to see your faces yet. We should be able to move about unnoticed."

"What about you?" Johnston points out. "You've been around since the beginning, right?"

"Pffffft, who's gonna recognize a little ol' destroyer escort like me?" Sam laughs. "Don't sweat it!"

"Rule TWO!" Red continues. "You stay in my line of sight at ALL TIMES. The last thing we need is a bunch of shipgirls getting lost in a major city! Got it?"

"Got it." You all affirm.

"And... rule three. REMEMBER THE FIRST TWO RULES!" Red reminds you all. "Now, we've still got a few minutes before our plane takes off, so if you got anything critical to take care of, you better do it now!"

Well, it's going to be slow (only during events) and mostly cap ships. There's still plenty of unimplemented IJN destroyers, and there are rumors that CVEs and coastal patrol boats will be implemented. Plus, they also want to do RN boats.

Though I wonder if they'll do something with USS Stewart (DD-224), since she was captured and turned into a patrol boat by Japan.
>>
>>44950668
What they don't know is that San Diego is so military that they will be instantly spotted by dumb as fuck e-3s or some shit.
>>
>>44950831
They better not fucking do what they did to the U-Boat. I don't mind them including the Stewart, but they need to do something that doesn't look like she got brainwashed.

But I think in general, it should be something more saccharine, like the Stewart is a tourist or exchange student or something. Have lines like "Last time I visited Japan wasn't that great, but I know this time will be better!" Put an optimistic tone to it that doesn't come off as creepy, like U-511's whole "going native" shit.

"All right, I'll meet you all at the plane!" You say quickly as you jog out. You quickly flip out your phone and dial in Anna's number.

"Oh, Hoel! I thought you would have left by now!" Anna's voice chirps through the device. "I thought you would already left by now!"

"Oh, well, not yet." You laugh lightly. "Hey, where are you at right now?"

"O-oh, I'm at Mulberry's-"

"Great! See ya there!" You say as you hang up and dash over to the shipgirl hangout.

At this hour, the cafe was relatively empty save for a few ships. You see Anna sitting at the bar, her feet swinging back and forth while sitting on a high chair. You notice Vita and San Francisco were present as well, sitting at the bar as well. Vita was calmly sipping a cup of tea, while San Fran was drowning herself in alcohol like always. Tequila, this time.

"O-oh, Hoel!" Anna turns to you, her face reddening slightly. "I didn't think you'd come and say goodbye in person!"

"Why wouldn't I for my favorite little support ship?" You chuckle as you ruffle her hair.

"H-hey! S-stop it!" Anna wails.

"Now now, Hoel, it's rude to interrupt a girl when she's drinking." Mulberry calmly pushes your hand away. "I hear you got into some sort of accident recently?"

"Ah, I see." Mulberry nods as she returns to her duties.

"Aaaaaaah, I'm so jealouuuuuus." Anna groans. "Getting to go on leave, even if it's only for a couple of days..."

"You haven't gone on leave?" You blink.

"No... kind of the downside of being a unique support ship." Anna gives a bit of a neutral smile. "It's nice being needed by the fleet, but sometimes I'm just needed a little too much..."

"Hey, don't sweat it. I'm sure we'll find a way." You pat her on the back. "How about this, I'll get you a whole BAG of souvenirs when I come back!"

"Really?! You would?!" Anna's eyes sparkle.

"Of course!" You grin.

"W-what will you get?!" Anna asks.

"Well, that's the surprise!" You laugh loudly, not mentioning that you don't really know, either. You then take a look at the time. "Crap! We gotta leave soon! Cya soon, Anna!"

"Oh, don't forget to keep a close eye on Heerman for me, Hoel!" Vita adds in. "She may be fully recovered, but I want to make sure there aren't any lingering effects."

"Sure thing, Doc." You nod.

You give the little command ship a big hug, practically picking her up from the ground.

"Eeeep!" Anna squeaks.

"Don't have too much fun without me, okay?" You grin as you kiss her on the forehead.

"U-u-u-uh y-yeah!" Anna stammers, her whole body starting to steam slightly.

"Oh dear, not again." Vita sighs. "Mulberry, some cold water, please."

"Of course!" Mulberry beams. "Now, Hoel, I believe you should go now."

"Yeah, see you all later!" You say as you dash out of the cafe and towards the airstrip. There, you see the rest of the Taffy 3 waiting to board a private charter jet. Certainly a different sight than the regular Osprey or C-130 you've regularly been flying in up until now.

You then hear a loud PING from your cellphone, and you see it's a message from Portland.

>Don't get into too much trouble.

Well, you guess that's her best way of saying "goodbye" to you, you suppose.

"Come on, get on!" Red instructs, waving you all to begin boarding.

Philadelphia Experiment is post-WW2, though. But it's certainly Silver Age stuff.

>After a teleporter experiment goes terribly wrong, the mildmannered Destroyer USS Eldridge discovers she has gained the power of invisibility, intangibility, and time travel! All of you quickly line up and file into the charter plane. The first thing you notice is just how... SOFT everything looks. Cushions and fabric were basically nonexistent in military transports, so you're rather surprised to see actual cushioned seats. It was just SOOOO SOOOOOOFT!

In fact, the moment you sit down in one, you lost track of time and suddenly realize the plane is already in the air when you come back to your senses. You glance out the window and all you could see was darkness, the distant lights of Hawaii small specks on the horizon.

You then scan the rest of the cabin. Johnston and White Plains were already out cold, with Johnston clutching the little escort carrier close, pressing White Plains' head right against her ample bow.

Red and Sam were both engorged in their individual phones, no doubt listening to music or watching movies or something. Heerman, meanwhile, was just staring out the window, a troubled look on her face.

No, yandere isn't what I'm talking about.
Yandere is a creepy, possessive, mockery of love.
I'm talking about a very SMALL, very FOCUSED amount and type of crazy. In Enterprise's case it's dealing with a massive case of survivors' guilt by becoming Aircraft Carrier Mack Bolan.
Why do you think none of the six carriers that participated in the attack on Pearl Harbor survived the war?
Because Enterprise was hunting them.

"Hey, for what it's worth, it makes me really happy to know you've got my back." You smile as you clasp Heerman's hand in your own. "Just... just be more careful next time, okay?"

"That sounds like something I should be telling YOU." Heerman snorts in laughter.

"Yeah, I guess that sounds kinda silly coming from me." You giggle.

"Ooooooh, so not only are you into little redheaded escort carriers, but your own sister, too? How leeeeeewd." Johnston snickers as she leans over the back of your seats.

"What the hell are you talking about!?" You hiss.

"Don't worry, I can just go to sleep and pretend I didn't see anything~." Johnston smiles smugly as her head slowly slides back behind the seat.

"Goddamnit, I should've figured she'd ruin the moment." Heerman facepalms. "Damn witch always seems to sniff out anything even vaguely misinterpret-able."

And you see yourself in the midst of the lab again. The stark white, sterile interior was painfully familiar to you now. Scientists and doctors surround you, all looking through a large observation window, completely allured. Wondering what they're looking out, you try to push your way through the crowd, and notice that you're not walking past them, but THROUGH them, like some sort of ghost. You easily make your way up to the window.

And through it you could see a familiar operating room. Again, you could see the captured Wo strapped down securely, tubes and wires going in and out fits body, piping a ugly black fluid you couldn't identify. You could see dozens of scars all over its body, apparently from numerous previous dissections, and from its movement and and the readings on a nearby monitor, it was still somehow alive. Its skin was somehow paler than before, and its breathing shallow and weak, having to rely on an oxygen mask to breathe now.

Inside the operating room itself was a team of doctors wearing hazmat suits, but you could recognize one of them as Vahlen. They all crowd around the Wo, various surgical tools at the ready.

"We have acquired all of the data we needed." Vahlen says softly as she taps away at a laptop. "All that remains is to test the reaction of Rig removal. Is the Rig secure?"

"It is, Doctor." One of the assistants nods. "All restraints appear to be intact."

"Good, then let's begin." Vahlen nods to another assistant, who raises a massive power saw...

The Wo is nothing more than a meat puppet for the Rig.
For years, the Abyssals have been successful in hiding the fact that it is in fact the Rig that is the Abyssal, and not the meat puppet, playing upon the scientists' and players' desire to feel that the human form is somehow intelligent, and not just another disposable meat appendage.

Despite all of your instincts telling you to, you can't turn away, and will yourself to keep your eyes locked onto the grisly scene. With scalpels and saws, the doctors chip away at the gap between the Wo's head and her Rig. It's not a quiet or peaceful process, either. The moment the blades touch the Wo's head, it immediately gives an ear piercing scream, rattling the entire operating room. The Wo's body spasms and fidgets, desperately struggling against its restraints. The Rig also struggles uncontrollably, its own restraints holding it in place.

The fact that the doctors don't even seem phased at this seems to indicate that they have become rather used to this.

"Note to self, sedative compound twelve ineffective." Vahlen ticks off a box on her notebook casually.

"Doctor, vitals are spiking!" One of the assistants cries as the monitor goes crazy. "Should we stop?"

"No, continue." Vahlen says coldly. "The subject's survival is not necessary for this procedure."

The doctors continue to cut and cut and cut, ignoring all of the noise and the Wo's frantic movements. You're not sure how much time passes, but eventually, the Wo's movements get slower and weaker, it stops screaming as it throat gives away to a hoarse groaning. And still the doctors continue on their work. Thick, black oilblood pools on the table, only to be sucked away by an assistant armed with a large vacuum tube.

"Vitals dropping, I think it's going into shock." The monitor assistant announces.

And then all sound is replaced by a single, flat tone.

"Subject has flatlined."

"Removal of the rig successful." Vahlen notes. Signs of cranial tissue both in the head of the humanoid portion and the Rig. Perhaps they are a singe entity? Or two separate entities in a symbiotic relationship? Further research is required..."

"Doctor, it seems the Rig has expired, as well." Another assistant announces.

"Pity." Vahlen sighs. "Send the Rig to Dr. Shen for further analysis."

"And the rest?"

Vahlen takes one last look at the Wo's body.

"Standard disposal procedure. We have no more use for it."

"Yes, Doctor."

The scientists lift the Wo's body off the table and load it onto a stretcher, which they cart off to one end of the operating room while another team carriers the (mostly) derelict Rig away to be sent to Shen. You try to follow the team disposing of the Wo, but you feel your movements slowing, as if trying to wide through molasses. The Wo gets farther and farther away...

---

Your eyes flutter open as the morning sun filters through the window of the plane.

"Wakey wakey, sleepyhead." Sam coos as she pokes you in the forehead. "We've landed."

"Hwua?!" You snort as you shake yourself awake.

"Something wrong?" Sam frowns. "Looks like you had a bad dream."

Both the human part and the rig are work in concert. When it hopped on our head and started whispering, it was trying to form that symbiotic relationship again, probably because it cannot live without a "partner".

It's only when we're unwilling does it try to go all meatpuppet, but even then it probably cannot control anyone completely. The fact is most abyssals are clearly consenting participants in the whole girl-rig relationship, and thus no meat puppetry is required at all. All the abyssals we see are the spirits of ships who, when they got found by the abyssals, said "sign me up".

If you want a supersub, look at the design of the Scinfaxi and Hrimfaxi. >probably because it cannot live without a "partner".
Or it was doing it because it needed more mobility and firepower, and a shipgirl provides both.
We don't know if it needs a shipgirl to survive, or if it simply needed a way to get more of the Abyssal oilblood that their supply tankers carry.

You're making just as many assumptions, and cherrypicking the ones that are convenient.

"I... I don't want to talk about it."

"Sure thing." Sam frowns, but smiles when she pulls you up from your seat. "Cheer up! We're in sweet and sunny LA! Forget about bad dream and let's have some fun!"

"Y-yeah." You nod.

Red and Sam lead the four of out of the plane and to a waiting tram bus that rolls over to a nearby building. A large terminal building of glass and concrete.

"W-what is that?" You gasp.

"That's Tom Bradley International Terminal." Red says simply.

"It looks so... empty." Johnston frowns as she looks around. "Where are all of the people?"

"Well, naturally, the whole Abyssal invasion thing kind of put a damper on international travel. With everything being prioritized for military flights, this section of the airport was shut down and put under control of the Air Force. Good for us, because it means we can ship you in here without any fuss."

"Convenient." Heerman nods. "I suppose we won't be walking around in uniform?"

"Course not! That's why we're stopping here first!" Sam says happily as she pushes open a door.

"Pick whatever you want." Sam chuckles. "We keep places like these around so shipgirls on leave would have something to wear. Helps keep us under the radar, you know?"

The next hour or so are spent with you bickering with your sisters of what clothes each of you had dibs on. In the end, you all make your own individual decisions. You yourself pick out a pair of shorts and a light jacket. LA was pretty warm, after all. Your fellow shipgirls all choose a similar mix of shorts, skirts, and t-shirts.

"Heh, you look like pretty much any typical tourist!" Red grins. She herself is wearing jeans and a shirt with a denim jacket. "Anyways, we've got the whole damn day! Where do you guys wanna go?"

"DISNEYLAND!" You all say in unison. After all you've heard from the other destroyers as well as the base staff you've managed to talk to, they've all said that Disneyland was the go to place if you ever found yourself in Los Angeles.

"Haha, good choice!" Red laughs. "You know, it's been a while since I've been there myself. Wonder if they changed anything?"

"Huh actually..." Sam frowns. "I never went there before either. Gonna be interesting."

"Well, one of the perks of being in the Navy..." Red smiles, and a SeaHawk helicopter lands on the tarmac outside. "...is that we've always got a ride. We'll be able to bypass any traffic with this!"

"Traffic?" Johnston frowns. "How does that work on land?"

"Like pure Hell." Sam rolls her eyes. "Trust me, that's something you don't want to experience."

You all pile into the helicopter. Red gives the pilot a heads up and it lifts off. As it does so, you start to get a better view of Los Angeles from the air. The first thing you notice is just the massive SPRAWL. Buildings, stretching as far as the eye can see. It was like a veritable ocean of concrete. You know you've passed by Los Angeles at some point, but from the shore... you had no idea at the true scale of the city!

As if in opposition, the endless blue ocean stretched out the opposite horizon, blue waves crashing upon a thin white line of sand bordering the two regions. On the coast, you could see multiple grey navy ships and the white and orange Coast Guard ones patrolling the waters, and there were constant helicopter overflights as well.

"Were things that bad?" Heerman asks.

"Bad? They were fucking terrible!" Red snorts. "The moment news of the Abyssals went public, people were flocking inland as if their lives depended on it. A lot of the coastal cities nearly became ghost towns! It was only in the past year that the Navy declared the continental coasts "Green Zones"."

"Green Zones?" You blink.

"Areas considered completely sanitized of Abyssal presence." Red explains. "The continental US is one of the few places in the world that has Green Zones, at the expense of pretty much everybody else."

"Well, that's what happens when you concentrate the biggest and most advanced navy in the world on your own home waters." Sam shrugs. "Spreading them out trying to protect everybody would have just gotten more ships sunk."

You realize that the Green Zones are only safe because of the continued concentration of US Navy ships, right?
That if the US Navy had to extend its protective envelope to Japan, not only would more US Navy ships and shipgirls be getting sunk, but it would open up entire sections of the US western coastline to Abyssal attack.
And the amount of Japanese coastline to defend, as well as keeping the sea lanes open, without having the bases that just recently were made available, would have resulted in a lot of dead American sailors, ships, and shipgirls.

Japan's economy is entirely dependent on not just secure coastlines, but secure sea lanes.
And if the USN can't project past Hawaii because of Abyssal bases at Midway and Abyssal patrols in Southeast Asia, how is it supposed to be able to secure the sea lanes needed to feed Japan's economy with the raw materials it needs to actually produce munitions and ships?

Food prices are doubtlessly at an all time high (not just from closed trade routes, but from the fishery industry being abyssal bait), millions are out of work, and there are probably abyssals attacking coastal facilities (Fukushima 2: Electric Boogaloo).

What a great job we did protecting our ally, who we prevented from ever having a military of any real consequence for half a century.

Why don't you accept that your idea would have just resulted in lost American ships, left the US Navy with less supplies and ability to field ships, and wouldn't have helped Japan appreciably.

A significant portion of the Japanese population don't want a military.

Much of the resurgence of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces has been at the urging of the United States, who wants Japan to pick up the military slack in Asia.
>>
>>44955252
Not that simple. Yes, we did it with West Germany right after WWII, but we still had a shitton of surplus cargo aircraft lying around to do so, and they could easily pick up cargo from nearby countries. Japan? Not so much, at least not with China being dicks.

"So naturally, the US Government wanted to leverage them as propaganda, and the first company that approached them to make it happen was, well, Disney."

"Don't they just run a park and make cartoons?" You frown.

"Kid, Disney is a multibillion dollar mass media corporation now." Red laughs. "In return for a LOT of money and a LOT of perks, the Navy allowed Disney to use the likeness of certain shipgirls..."

"Which shipgirls?" You ask cautiously, already pretty sure you know the answer.

"You know what, how about we show you!" Sam grins as she leads you to a small gate. The guards there perk up to attention, but Red flashes her VIP badge and they let you pass without question or issue.

And then you're suddenly drowned in a sea of people. It takes all your effort to try and stay close to you group as Red and Sam lead you up to the side of the street, where you see what looks to be a large parade going on.

And there stand Iowa and Enterprise, waving at the crowd as they stand atop a mockup of a warship, towering above everybody.

"W-what?!" Johnston blinks. "Aren't they back at base?!?"

"Wait a minute..." Heerman mutters.

"That's not them." White Plains says quickly.

Sure enough, you realize that it's not the actual Iowa and Enterprise... just people dressed like them. And it all clicks in place.

"Clever bastards." You sigh.

"I know, right?" Sam laughs.

"OH NO EVERYBODY, WATCH OUT!" 'Enterprise' calls out. "The Abyssals are coming!"

And the entire crowd collectively gasps as a swarm of men dressed in EXTREMELY cheap looking costumes began dashing about in the street. Other costumed staff began fleeing in mock terror while the crowd booed at them.

"Don't worry, everybody, we'll protect you!" 'Iowa' proclaims as she aims her 'gun' at the 'Abyssals'. Thankfully, instead of a shell, her gun fires streams of water, splashing both the Abyssals and the crowd.

Then the crowd begins joining in, taking out waterguns and using them to blast at the 'Abyssals', who writhe and twitch and mock pain as they're repeatedly hit.

"Come on." You tug at Sam's sleeve. "If we wanted to shoot Abyssals, we'd just go back to work."

"Ha, that's true, right?" Sam nods. "We got a pretty big group though... how about we split up?"

"Hmmmmmm, all right, I'll give an exception for Rule two just this once." Red grunts. "We'll all split off in pairs, which DO NOT SEPARATE under any circumstances! Other than that, you'll be free to move about the park. We'll rendezvous back here at 1800, not a minute later, got it?"

"Got it!" You all nod.

"All right, now pair up!" Red instructs.

Actual Surcouf looks very different.

Or Japan is also busy defending her own borders, barely holding out due to limited resources compared to the USN's zerg rush.
>>

Kinda, not really. The only real difference is the dive planes and the top of the main battery.

There's nothing to suggest that. The problem is that the islands of Japan are poor in resources, so the Japanese are dependent on outside supplies, raw or manufactured. That's why they are in trouble with the Chinese withdrawing their supply convoys: not enough material to keep themselves safe.

"C'mon, Heerman!" You grab her hand as you pull her along. "Let's go see what this park has to offer!"

"O-okay!" Heerman blinks as you pull her along, weaving in and out among the masses of people clogging seemingly every square inch of this park.

"Have fun!" Sam waves.

"Hoel, do you even know where we're going yet?" Heerman asks.

"NOPE!" You say happily.

"We have a map." Heerman says as she waves it in front of your face.

"Fiiiiiine." You slide to a stop and snatch the map out of Heerman's hands, giving it a quick glance. HOLY SHIT THIS PLACE WAS LARGER THAN YOU THOUGHT. "So, uh, you have any preferences?"

Something about a Star Wars section (or an Avatar section, for that matter) in a Disney theme park feels wrong to me.

It's one thing to include a property in the park, it's another thing to make an entire area dedicated to that property and that property alone. I feel Star Wars would be right at home in Tomorrowland, same with Avatar.

Would it be so hard to do an original theme area?

Disney MGM (I forget what it's called now, Disney Magic or something?) At Disney World in Florida has had a big Starwars section for decades.

This isn't much of a step, really.

Hmmmm, you wonder what exactly this "Star Wars" stuff was. You've always heard a lot of the base staff and the older shipgirls talking about it. Some kind of movie series or something, but you never really had the time to check it out. And, well, if there was a whole section of the park dedicated to it, why not check it out?

"All right, we'll go with your suggestion!" You smile as you grab Heerman's hand and start dragging her along again. "LET'S GO!"

"Y-you don't have to keep pulling me along!" Heerman groans.
