This is Boruto Quest, a quest set in the universe of Naruto. It is during the generation of Naruto's son, shortly after everyone has graduated from their Genin exam. I haven't kept up with the series beyond the end of the original one, so this one is intended to recapture the feel of that time of Naruto. I will not be incorporating the main show or the Boruto movie's plot into the quest, although some recognizable characters will be present. You play as a 12 year old Chunin graduate named Takeshi. You have been assigned a Jounin squad leader named Hanto, and your two squadmates are Kichiro, a young delinquent, and Ai, a strange social outcast of a girl. You are of average skill in most aspects, although your sharp intelligence, and your jack of trades skill set have brought you far. You have just recently graduated to a Chunin after winning the final tournament, and it is several days after. Your first mission has begun.

The group of men sprint towards you, quickly coming into focus. "Hey! We found one! Get him!"

Two of three are simply running towards you, while the third hangs back. They burst through the mist and attack, the one on the left swinging with a small sword. The man on on the right has no weapon. You easily step out of the way of the sword swipe, and retaliate by shooting out with a strong right straight. Your fist collides with a proper angle on the man's jaw, causing his body to go stiff before he hits the ground.

The third man seems to take a step back, surprised. There's an explosion in the distance, and it causes him to jump and turn. "What the hell!?"

The man with no weapon shoots his leg up in a front kick, and you bring your arms together and low to cover your stomach, crossing them. You're still pushed harshly, hopping in the air slightly before you feet skid against the dirt of the road. This guy's stronger than the others.

He reaches behind his back, and draws a curved wakazashi.

The third man turns tail to run, but he scarcely makes it a step before a sonic boom cracks the air around you sharply, whip-like. There's a great suction of air, the mist all around you breathing to the left before exploding forward, a windstorm. You're nearly knocked off your feet from the explosive gust, and the sudden shower of debris and dirt forces you to cover your head and take a dive.

You lay still for a few seconds, before tilting your head up once all is quiet. The mist is completely gone, and the man with the wakazashi in front of you now has his back turned.

You're not too worried about attacking him, however. Directly where the third man had been standing before, is now a burning gash in the earth. It tears in from the left of the forest, and bursts through it on the right side of the path. Many trees are completely demolished, smoldering. Ash hangs in the air.

The man with the wakazashi soils himself, Four figures step out of the forest.

Sarasu, his fist smoldering and bloody. Yasu, wiping a white cloth along the flat of her sword. Naota looks completely undisturbed, while your friend Takkun is panting, several flecks of blood on his face. He seems completely uninjured, however.

The Jounin kneels down and grabs him by the scruff of his shirt, hefting him by simply raising his arm. It seems totally effortless.

He's dropped in front of you, terrified and confused.

Sarasu cracks his knuckles. "Tch, I was wrong..This was barely an ambush. Did you really think a dozen foot soldiers and a run-away of a couple punk Chunin would save you!? You're from the Leaf! You should know better!"

The man glares up at Sarasu, despite his pathetic state. "You're monsters! Goddamn MONSTERS!"

You look up, and down the path. Sure enough you can see a dozen or so bodies.

You kneel and form the handsigns for your technique. The man looks at you, wide eyes. "What are you doing??"

Slowly, you reach out with your hand. He reaches out and grabs your arm tightly, the panicked grip hurting slightly. You raise an eyebrow. "Hey, come on! You lost, just-"

Yasu kicks him harshly in the ribs, and he lets go of your arm. He clutches his side and sharply inhales. You shoot down, slapping your palm against his forehead. His eyes open up and go wide, but threads of chakra extend from your fintertips into his mind. They worm their way through, freely surging past all memory and experience that this man has. You are free to examine his mind, only limited by your chakra.

There is no need for the overwhelming force that Shikamaru helped you attain. This man has no will left to resist, after being frightened so badly.

Keep in mind that you can't do that. You won't be able to scramble someone's mind with any sort of permanency with this jutsu. At the least they'll feel fatigued, maybe pass out at the most.

Jutsu aren't quite like spells or powers that one is going to be able to do much beyond it's intended function, unless you're really clever in the way you use it. But the actual function of the technique, i.e, discovering information, is far removed from scrambling a brain.

Think of it as the difference between Ino's Mind Transfer, and her dad's Mind Shattering shit.

Ultimately, you decide to focus on the actual subject of the mission. Finding the artifact. The mental journey you undertake absorbs all of your senses, and the perspective that you have of your sense of self is destroyed. You float senselessly for a second in a vast network of synapses and neurons. The bioelectricty and chakra warp around you visually as you wander, trying to discern any hints to your objective.

PROTECT

A mental directive. Fear. You get the sensation of a grudge, almost. The feelings bleed into you until they begin to take a more concrete form. "Protect the orb!"

You get a visual distortion, a glowing pink orb, about the size of your standard crystal ball a fortune teller would use. The vision shifts from glaring at the orb, to the source of the voice. It's a tall man, with black clothing and white spiky hair that falls back over his shoulders. He has a widow's peak, and seems to be particularly haggard despite looking to be in his early thirties. He has a Leaf Headband wrapped around his bicep, scratched profusely as if in anger. Again, the sensation of fear bleeds over. The man that you're interrogating is afraid of this other man?

That isn't the focus of this, however. Your attention is diverted back to the orb.

You examine the surroundings. From what you can tell, it's in a shallow cave, damp and dark, resting on a wooden platform with a pillow supporting it. Light shines in from the entrance of the cave, and you can just barely look out the thick vegetation of the swamp you're heading towards.
>>
The vision stops. You snap back into your body, having to take a breather, droplets of sweat dripping from your forehead. You look around, and see everyone else relaxing. Your body is stiff, and you imagine you've been standing like this for about ten minutes.

You take your hand off and the man falls against the ground with a thud. He groans.

"The artifact is a purple crystal orb. It's in a cave, hidden in the swamp. There's also something else strange."

Sarasu stands up, having been sitting against a tree. "What's that?"

You rub the back of your head. "It was a man. He was telling this guy to protect the orb, at some point. He's afraid of him, and he had a leaf headband on his arm. White, spiky, shoulder length hair."

Your group is all standing up, getting ready to go on the move again. Sarasu grumbles. "Ah, that's Koji then. Makes sense why this particular band is so large. He was a highly skilled Chunin that had failed the Jounin exams multiple times. Not for a lack of skill, mind you, but because he was particularly unstable and difficult to predict. Naruto did his best, but Koji was in a rage about something or other and he finally snapped and killed a fellow shinobi. If you guys see him on the field, let me engage."

Takkun steps up. You notice he's cleaned himself off. "What about this guy?"

You look down at the broken man.

>A. We should kill him. He might go get others for support.
>B. Let's tie him up, and take him back to the village on the way back.

I don't fancy leaving him to alert his friends, or to carry a grudge. He's not got much more we can learn on a useful timescale, and knocking him out so an animal can /probably/ kill him is just cowardly.
>>
>>44943894
1. You only killed two people, and knocked out a third.

2. It was hardly in cold blood. Doing something like this would be cold blooded. It'd be unnecessary entirely.

I'm not saying you're a shining beacon of morality but you have yet to really indulge in senseless violence.

So, when are we gonna do some real chill time with Kichiro and Ai? Or anyone, for that matter. I like the mission stuff and all, and I know bonding happens in missions, but there's gotta be downtime at some point. I know Mini said that the village was a shitty way of doing that, buy I don't know how else to really do that.
>>
>>44943892
>B. Let's tie him up, and take him back to the village on the way back.
He's a potential source of info on Koji's activities. The HumInt guys will fucking LOVE US if we bring him to them.
>>44943894
There's a pretty vast difference between killing an enemy combatant in combat, and executing a dude who already surrendered.
>>
>>44944029
Then he'll just empty his bowels s'more.

It already stinks!
>>
>>44943939
>You only killed two people, and knocked out a third.
Us personally, yeah, but we just glanced up to see a dozen-odd other bodies laid out there. We as a team are going through these guys like a woodchipper.

>It was hardly in cold blood.
Well, we straight-up murdered that one guy from stealth. Kunai (or needle?) through the throat, iirc. That's pretty much exactly cold blood. Sure, it's a "combat situation", but one we initiated, planned for, and actually knew about, while he was basically just standing around. He wouldn't have been happy to see us, that's for sure, but that doesn't mean we were acting in the heat of combat.

>>44943939
>It'd be unnecessary entirely
Oh, no disagreement here. Brain melting for no gain isn't really something I recommend. It was more the knee-jerk principle of "oh man let's not permanently hurt anyone" feeling kind of schizophrenic after we knife-sniped two guys.
>>
>>44944055
I don't think Ai even understands the CONCEPT of "chill time".
>>
If we do kill him, can it not be us?

Killing someone in the heat of battle is one thing but slicing a dude's throat open after he's given up is...uncomfortable.
>>
>>44943892
>A. We should kill him. He might go get others for support.

>>44944029
>Killing him in this moment would have a purpose.
He has already shat himself. It is a kindness.
>>
>>44944055
You'll have to confront them specifically about it.

You've only JUST learned where Kichiro lives. Now maybe you can go visit if you'd like.

Your friends aren't really well adjusted people, so it's going to take a little time for them to truly warm up to you in a personal sense.
>>
>>44944086

Don't be an ethics. This is for the mission, don't leave loose ends.

>A. We should kill him. He might go get others for support.
>>
>>44944086
Sarasu would be the one to kill him if that's your choice. He wouldn't put that on a kid, but he does want your input on the matter.
>>
>>44944061
>Well, we straight-up murdered that one guy from stealth. Kunai (or needle?) through the throat, iirc. That's pretty much exactly cold blood. Sure, it's a "combat situation", but one we initiated, planned for, and actually knew about, while he was basically just standing around.
He was still an active threat, though. The guy we just pulled a Motoko on is no longer active, and even less so if we tie him up.
>>
>>44944086
I dunno, anon. I kind of feel the opposite - this is our first mission as a chuunin, and we're making decisions that take people's lives. If we order this man's death... we should be willing (if not actually happy) to do it ourselves.
>>
>>44944128

Since the start of this quest we have prided ourselves with our efficiency and cold calculations. Killing him would make the most sense, no chance of him pulling an early alarm or escaping imprisonment and hurting others.
>>
>>44944142
This. We're a soldier first and a kid second. If we don't have the fortitude to kill someone ourselves, then we should just tie him up. A dwath isn't easier on anyone elses conscience. We barely know these people and we want to ask to kill for us? Nah
>>
>>44944142
Then we should bury the body ourselves at least.
>>
>>44944142
I'd rather we not go murder happy but if we decide to kill him, we should do and be either mildly upset or non plussed. We've trained for for some time.
>>
>>44944198
Why? That's a waste of time. We're in a swamp, the remains will be dealt with quickly.
>>
Ok why is this guys death a big deal. We are fucking ninja for crying out loud, the fact that this guy know who we are is reason enough to kill him. This isnt hard people.
>>
>>44943892
A. Kill him
>>
>>44944201
Mildly upset? We blew up a bunch of nameless street thugs on our first mission. Most of them are bound to be dead. I don't see why this is a big deal. We aren't good guys. We're shinobi. We're essentially in the military. We kill people for a living.
>>
>>44944237
Some of us aren't murder hobos.

We are given other options besides murdering the guy.

If he had come at us with that wakizashi instead of shitting himself I would've been fine with taking him out.

I dunno. Doing this way just makes Takeshi....clunky imo.
>>
>>44944237
Exactly

And also, where we dont have any anime bullshit abilities we cant afford to try and keep the enemy alive in a fight, we use everything with intent to kill, that much was evident in the chuunin exams, obviously that mentality would rub off on us and we'd be fine killing this dude
>>
>>44944286
He kicked us, didn't he? I mean, we blocked it, but still.
>>
>>44943892

>D. Let's get more info. Information is king.
>>
>A. We should kill him. He might go get others for support.
>>
>>44944286
The only reason he isn't trying to kill you right now is because he knows he has absolutely zero hope of doing so.
>>
>>44944285
I'm saying at worst as this guy is a blubbering mess of non-thrrat. I'm personally more apt for us to be fairly alright with it.
>>
>>44944339
Then just search his person and take him out and throw the corpses into the swamp to become gator shit.

Whatever.
>>
After a brief internal contemplation of the options in front of you, you come to a conclusion. There would be little point in taking a thug like this back to the village. Not to mention it's possible he could escape from his bindings if you were to tie him up. Knocking him out might even be worse than killing him, leaving him at the total mercy of the world and passing the buck. You gulp.

"I guess..we should kill him?"

Everyone nods. Naota speaks, surprising you slightly. "Grim it may be, there isn't much choice."

The man on the ground laughs. "You bastards! I'm right here, how are you going to-!?"

Yasu grabs him by the shirt and shakes him around a bit. "SHUT UP!!!"

Sarasu puts a hand on her shoulder, and spins her around. He roars. "Knock it off!"

She drops him, and he starts to scoot backwards, clearly afraid and confused. Sarasu steps past his daughter, who looks slightly ashamed, surprising you.

He reaches down and quickly crushes the man's neck, severing his spinal cord with one hand. He's dead, quick and painless. You turn your head away sharply at the disgusting noise.

Sarasu turns. Yasu rubs her arm. "Sorry dad.."

He looks over his shoulder. "There's no need to berate the poor bastard. It's a mercy to just kill him and get it over with."

She hangs her head low, and nods. The five of you begin to make your way back down the path, walking past numerous bodies.

It will be about another hour before you reach the enemy camp. You have some time to talk.

You sound like you feel guilty about it so you need to alleviate that guilt by accepting the role of the bad guy, which makes you overcompensate the other direction.

And now I sound like a douche for pretending I know anything about psychology.

We probably wouldn't have as much of a problem accepting the edge here if we hadn't had a very vocal and steadily growing minority of edgefags clamoring for the edgy option all the time. So, even though right now it's actually a good time for it, there's still the sentiment of not wanting them to win here. Because if they win here, they affect Takeshi's character development. It's the whole give them an inch, they'll take a mile thing.

Which makes sense, seeing as corrupting influences like that are edgy. It's hard to strike a balance and not fall to the dark side.

Walking forward, you decide to start by asking Sarasu a few questions. He looks down as you approach. "What's up?"

"I wanted to ask you some more about Koji. Just to know, if we end up in a bad spot."

He grumbles, and you can just barely hear him say "Good idea." He looks back towards the center of the road, eyes focused. "Well, he generally uses Lightning Style jutsu. Like I said, he's a Chunin, but the only reason he failed the Jounin exam was because of the loose screws in his head. My son was in the Academy with him, they grew up together. The thing is, I just can't imagine what would possess Koji to do something like this. He was always a lone wolf, never interested in leading a team or anything like that. I doubt he's after money."

Sarasu's face turns grim. "If he's involved, there is almost certainly an ulterior motive. But what?"

Naota steps forward. "Perhaps he wishes to sell the artifact to continue to fund his operation."

You shake your head slowly. "He could have done that already. He wants to keep it, and protect it.."

Sarasu snorts. "It's just a pretty rock, right? What the hell is he thinking..Look, kids, I'm gonna need some time to seriously think about this."

You nod. "Right."

Guys.
I just realized.
I figured out what anime character Takeshi reminds me of.
We can even ghostdive a mother fucker.
We need to learn a technique for making people punch themselves in the face.
>>
Seeing how she reacted to being reprimanded, your mental image of Yasu changes slightly. You'd peg her more as the type who would rebel against her parents. Granted, she was home schooled. Maybe she's a bit more vulnerable of person than you'd originally considered. You step over, smilingly slightly. "Hey, how you doing?"

She had been looking out over at the forest, and looks back at you with a raised eyebrow. "Uh..fine. You?"

You shrug. "Still standing. Hey, by the way, how many of those goons did you get?"

She grins. "Five! I got the most, next to my dad."

Oh jeez. You might have to pay for dinner. You scratch your chin. "I see..What did Naota and Takkun get?"

She looks up at the clouds, her caramel brown ponytail swinging to the side. "Mm, Naota got three or four. Takkun had some bad luck and ran into the Chunin. Had to take him one on one in the mist until my Dad showed up, so he actually didn't get anyone."

You wipe your forehead. "Phew, I only got two. I hate to be a little glad about someone else's bad luck, but.."

She shoves you, causing you to stumble to the side. "Tch, shut up. Don't be sad someone else lost, be happy you won."

Having a little casual conversation seems to have brightened her mood. You smile, enjoying the infectious nature of a positive attitude.

Not to mention it's easier to set up our bells and make them even more mind fuckery hidden in mist
>>
>>44945962
Oh.

Yeah, talk to Takkun then.
>>
You approach Takkun. He grins. "Hey, man. Hope that went better for you than it did for me."

Chuckling slightly, you nod. "It wasn't bad. Yasu told me about your crummy luck, running into the Chunin they had. How was that?"

He sighs. "He didn't look any different from another dude. I just happened to go for him first. I dropped down from above, but when I stuck a kunai in him he turned into a log. I managed to stay safe, but I was pretty much on the run the whole fight. That is, until Sensei got him. I'm gonna guess you got at least /one/ dude, but I don't really mind paying for some dinner. That's always the best part of the mission."

His eyes look a bit tired, and haggard. You mentally think back to your time at the academy, and how you'd always felt that you could empathize with Takkun a bit. He tended to fade into the background just like you, although he was a bit more popular on a social level. Known for being kind.

It makes you wonder how a timid kid like that has kept up with a group of savage warriors like this one.

"Well, I can't wait."

Just because players get the name wrong the INTENT of the votes are still crystal clear. We want to learn the Mist jutsu
>>

Went over it last thread. Let's move on and stop aggrivating the nice QM because we love him.

You step over to Naota, and decide to try and talk to him a bit. The guy has always been distant, so this might be one of the few chances you have. "Hey, how's it going?"

He shrugs. "Pretty uneventful so far. This Koji fellow interests me, though."

You nod. "I'm willing to bet that the artifact he has is some sort of crazy weapon, and that's why he has it."

Naota hums quietly, seeming to consider your words. "It's certainly a possibility, this world of ours is populated by objects filled with inexplicable power. I'm sure you've heard of the likes of the Sage's tools, or the Swordsmen of the Mist?"

"Yeah, of course. But what's an orb really going to do?"

Naota looks over. The sun glares on his glasses. "Well, I guess we'll see."

You smile. "Looking forward to dinner?"

Naota pulls out a cloth, and wipes at his glasses. "Hmph. I never turn down a free meal."

You chuckle a bit at this. Maybe this guy's a bit less serious than you had initially thought.

The five of you are on your way to your destination.

Yeah I'm in the middle of that eastern snow storm right now. Kind of having trouble posting.

This'll have to be the last one for tonight.

----Slowly, the terrain shifts from a thick forest into an even thicker swamp. The heat of the day causes the air to become filled with humidity. All around you are various ponds hidden under thick algea and grass, the shorter trees twisting their branches across in a tangled mess. The path that you're on has become narrow and muddy, and you approach the base of a mountain that has been on the horizon since you began this journey.

You're drawing close to the enemy territory. Sarasu stops, and turns. "Alright, we're here. It's time to split up into teams, and scour the area. This'll be our rendezvous point, should any of us get separated or injured. Let's go!"

Sarasu starts to walk down the path, directly towards the enemy. Takkun and Naota take off to the right, and you and Yasu take off towards the left. You leap into the trees and slowly, carefully, make your way through them. If you were to fall into the water, it could result in a pretty dire situation. The boss of the enemy uses Lightning Style.

Yasu is silent, and you are as well. You start to come through the foliage as you reach the base of the mountain, and the two of you kneel in the mud and crawl forward through some reeds. You can see the enemy fort. There is a crude wooden wall surrounding it, as well as several guards patrolling a wall.

---

Next thread you take on the enemy, and try to get the artifact! I'll try to answer questions if I can

How many guards? We see our allies? how stealthy is miss charging sword? how close are we too the wall?

MY FIRST QEUST,

I have read up on everything in the archives,
I'm ready to contribute.

First things first,
We should upgrade our genjutsu to be a true threat, We dont need AOE abilities, if we have AOE genjustu. as proven by beating boruto.
>>
>>44949019
It's a shame the high-tier genjutsu are completely locked to us, but there's plenty of room for improvisation with the available genjutsu.
>>
>>44949201
The thing is, yes higher tier genjutsu may be locked to us, but if we get a feel for different kinds of genjutsu. Eventually like the 3rd hokage, we will be able to create our own genjutsu.

Our char will never be a hyuuga/nara or uchiha.

But every bloodline starts with somebody creating a jutsu or gaining some power.

Lets be that person.
>>
>>44949019
>>44949201
>>44949416
My opinion is that we should definitely keep upgrading our genjutsu, but for now I feel like we should focus on water ninjutsu and learning some botany.

Water ninjutsu so we can have some more viable options available for offence, and also so that we have a fallback in case someone is strong against genjutsu. It'll also boost our utility greatly.

Botany will just make it so that we're not reliant on the fucking ninja-mart for poison, we should eventually become able to make our own custom shit in the field. Since poison will undoubtedly remain part of our repertoire, we need to actually become proficient with it.

Other than that, I'd say medical ninjutsu and genjutsu need to be honed, and everything else is secondary.
>>
>>44949416
>will never be a ... nara
Only because Ino had to continue to be shit and have a son instead of a daughter.
>>
>>44949800
Umm wrong family there. Shikimaru and Shikidai are Nara. Ino is Yamanaka.
>>
>>44949839
Derp.
Got that post mixed up with my lamentation of the fact that we'll never be able to do non-contact brainhacking like the Yamanakas.
>>
>>44949687
Yeah, we have a solid genjutsu, Poisoning makes our taijitsu even better, having a hydro sword is also extremely handy.

But our ninjitsu is pretty lacking, but the thing is.
If we become to well-rounded we might miss the oppertonity to learn high ranking genjutsu, because at the time. we simply weren't proficient enough. Also, we haven't trained our skills to be proficient againt genjutsu. So far nobody used genjutsu against us, are we even prepared for it?
>>
I want a puppeteer quest so bad. I'd consider starting one, but I'm worried my writing is shit. Plus there's two naruto quests already running. Puppeteer or samurai, haven't decided.
>>
>>44950270
>or samurai
So it'd basically be Yagyu Jubei Quest?
>>
>>44950270
Wheelchair puppeteer ninja qeust?

Speed 0,5. Can only walk with a stick.
Uses puppets to see trough with family jutsu,

Thats how we were able to go to school, or sport events.
>>
>>44950412
That only sounds like a good idea if we don't have to control it with strongs. Otherwise we'd get REKT right away because we cant move.

At least we'd need to be able to have long range and be able to hide GUD.
>>
>>44950351
Had to google that. I was referring the samurai from the Naruto setting, actually. Didn't get a whole lot of screentime in the original series (Of what I saw - never really finished it, which I aim to fix soon), but they seem kinda neat.
>>
>>44950570
Dude.
Pop culture magic ninjas were largely the invention of a Japanese author named Futaro Yamada.
Dude wrote no less than 24 novels about ninja. The whole "special abilities possessed by certain bloodlines" ninja eugenics thing? He INVENTED that in 1959, with a novel called "Kouga Ninpocho" (lit. "The Kouga Ninja Scrolls"). You may or may not know it's story, it was adapted in the early-mid 2000s into a manga and anime called "Basilisk".
He used Yagyu Jubei as a recurring character, often a protagonist. He wrote him as a basically normal dude, no crazy eugenics crap or anything, who could take on the Ninjas' bullshithax by being just that good.
So EXACTLY what a protagonist-tier samurai in the Naruto setting would need to be.
>>
>>44950756
Ninja Scroll is also loosely based on some of the exploits of his version of Jubei.
