Given your current pacing, it wouldn't take more than thirty/forty minutes to walk back. Plenty of time to find some more demons to fill your COMP. Five more until you can't take any more in. Since you've got more than enough time before you have to report back to Alger, you decide to continue making your way through the deeper parts of the forest, Pixie and Centaur in tow behind you.

"Hey, Master," Pixie asks, zipping right in front of you. "Are you sure that it was a good decision to let the gryphon live? How can you be sure that it's not gonna ditch you at the first sign of trouble? Sure it's probably grateful that you spared its life and all, but probably resentful for the humiliation of being beaten by a human..."

Centaur grunts. "If the knave dares to strike against my liege, it will face swift and merciless retribution. Such dishonor will not be tolerated. It will either bend the knee and serve willingly, or face a swift and cold end for harboring thoughts of rebellion."

Your demons continue to debate about the pros and cons of intimidating the gryphon into joining you as the thick foliage of the trees begin to block out the overhead sun.

You can hear something off the beaten path, what sounds like a group of young women giggling and laughing over some private joke. Curious, you crouch behind some foliage, gesturing for your demons to stay low as you implement what little stealth tactics you remember Alger drilling into your head in-between suicides and crunches.

A few minutes of sniper crawling eventually pay off. Situated around a tree stump in a forest clearing, a group of women in multi-colored clothing float above the air, talking and laughing amongst each other without a care in the world. Three of them are discussing something about a distant family relative while another appears to be cleaning up the remnants of a meal if the plates are anything to go by.

Pixie tugs at your arm and whispers into your ear, “Napaea, Master.” At your confused look, she elaborates further: “They’re a sub-species of Greek nymphs that live in wooden glens and valleys. Passive-aggressive for the most part unless you really offend them.”

So essentially your sister. Oh joy.

“I recommend caution, my liege,” Centaur warns. “There are four of them, and only three of us. I have no doubt that you are a strong Devil Summoner, but the odds are against us-“

Your demon can’t finish its sentence. An earth-shaking roar tears through the woods, causing the ends of your hairs to stand up and the demons in the clearing to panic. But before they can even do any kind of motion to get away, a dark shape crashes through the overhead canopy and lunges at one of the nymphs.

You’re unable to stop yourself from wincing at the Napaea’s bloodcurdling scream as the two-headed dog-beast-thing starts tearing into her arm.

+1 to Light

It doesn’t matter if they’re demons. If someone’s in trouble, it’s time to be the big goddamn hero and step up to the plate.

“We’ve gotta go help them," You declare, drawing your nightstick. "No way in hell are we gonna let that thing kill her."

Pixie gives you a funny look. “While I’d normally be one to say that this is the way of demons…you know survival of the fittest? I won’t stop you. As a matter of fact, I’ll give it all I’ve got. I’ve never saved a demon outside of my clan before. This should be interesting.”

Centaur nods in agreement, rubbing its hooves in savage glee. “An Orthus demon…a creature from my country’s legends,” it says. You can hear the anticipation in its guttural voice. “I have not had the opportunity to fight an opponent of such caliber.”

You roll your eyes and whisper back, “Glad to see you’re backing me up. Okay, here’s the plan…”

“...Pixie, hit the Orthus with a Rakunda. Centaur, you have magic of your own, right? Hit it with that after Pixie lands her debuff. I’ll go in and try to rally the Napaea. Got it?”
Your demons nod, and ready themselves to charge.

“On the count of three…” You hurriedly whisper. The nymph in the dogs’ massive jaws looks almost half-dead from the savaging she took. “One…two…three!”

You all burst from the undergrowth and run into the clearing, much to the surprise of the demons gathered within. Pixie waves her arms and blasts the two-headed beast with her spell, shouting “Got him!” as the purple aura envelops the Orthus’ body.

The tip of Centaur’s horns glow with a powerful light. With a cry of “Begone!”, a blast of ice races from its horns and hits the intended target without fail. Orthus roars in great pain, staggering to the ground as the shards of ice embed themselves deep within its fur.
The beast drops the Napaea to collapse to the forest floor in a seemingly boneless, bloody heap.

Seems that it didn't take too well towards ice attacks. You file that interesting tidbit in the back of your mind as you continue your sprint.

You rush past the other nymphs, who are torn between incredulity at your dynamic entry and extreme worry for their fallen friend.

“I’ll get the big guy’s attention,” You shout at them. “If you can hit him with everything you’ve got, then this fight’ll go a whole lot smoother than if it was just either one of us by ourselves!”

Your words seem to revitalize their morale and snap them out of their shocked stupor. They nod to you and begin casting magic spells in their hands. You can see the tell-tale twinkling light of what looks like a Dia and the green, churning vortex of what appears to be a wind-based spell, if you were to make a random guess.

But enough of that. You return your attention to Orthus, who appears to be struggling to tear out the ice shards embedded inside of its skin. From the way he’s barely moving at all, it seems to have suffered temporary immobility due to Centaur’s ice magic.

>Beast Orthus is frozen!

So in that game you give all your demons commands during your turn and then let it all happen at once.

Low loyalty demons can refuse to follow what you order them to do and they might do something else or do nothing.

Not sure if its the same here, might be more narrative involved/talking to your demon, but in SH the way you gain Loyalty is either gifts or commanding them in specific ways to mesh with their personality.

Wild animals like Orthrus like the 'Do whatever you want' command cause it lets them act freely, while Nice Demons like Pixie like to use healing spells.

Once Loyalty is high enough they'll do whatever you like regardless of personality.

This is what Imagine did. It also had a command that let you talk to one demon to raise it's loyalty greatly once per day.
There was a trick you could do with a max level demon, where you'd ask it to give you something, gaining you an item and lowering it's loyalty, then use the talk command on it to raise it's loyalty back to max. (Possibly gaining another item.)

There’s something so viscerally satisfying about playing the knight and smacking a demon right across the face…erm, faces, in the case of Orthus and its two heads. Regardless, there’s a very satisfying CRACK as a combination of blood, spittle and teeth go careening out of the place where the metal of your club connected.

On top of the support from the rest of the Napaea. Gusts of flesh-rending wind slice into Orthus’ frozen flesh, and the wounded nymph is healed of her wounds, and dragged away from the front lines. Things could literally not be going any better.

But it doesn’t last for long. The ice seems to have finally melted, allowing Orthus to freely move about without any constraint. A massive urge to fetch a pair of brown pants manifests in your stomach as flames start to grow out of both of its bloody mouths.

“KIRR OO!” It roars, struggling to form the words as it holds back the heat gathering within its jaws. “KIRR OO ARR!!”

With an angry roar, it opens both of its mouths and unleashes a wave of fire that seems to set the very air ablaze. It consumes all in its path as it races towards you and your demons.

Something somewhere must have been looking out for you. Because you managed to clear the jump over the flames without nary a burn or scorch mark on your flesh or clothing. Your demons manage to withstand the blast of heat without too much damage, but it would probably be best for the long term if you got them back to full hale and health as fast as you could.

With that said, you should probably do something about the tree that's now merrily burning away. Alger didn't mention anything about setting the forest on fire, and you're more than sure that the commander is going to tan your hide and stick you with KP for all eternity if you burn down the forests of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Scrambling back to your feet, taking care to avoiding the charred patches where Orthus’ flames scorched the grass and soil, you give your commands to your demons. “Pixie, Centaur!” You shout, hefting the nightstick. “I need you to use…”

“Bufu, then Zio on the Orthus, now!” You command. Your demons nod and fire their magic at the two-headed dog. Orthus doesn’t howl nearly as angry when the lightning scores into him, but it makes a terrible noise as Centaur’s ice magic embeds itself in the demon’s skin once more. However, it doesn’t seem to be terribly immobilized by the attack, much to your dismay.

“You son of a bitch!” One of the Napaea curses. “Did you just set the forest on fire?! We are going to fucking kill you, you two-headed piece of shit!!”

Oohhh, there’s the passive-aggressive coming into action. Good Christ, the lead Napaea is even worse than Sophia on her worst day. The nymphs raise their hands, Dia spells long gone. In their place, churning vortexes swirl to life in their palms.

More of the howling winds tear into the two-headed demon, scoring more hits and opening up more gashes on the beast’s flank. It staggers slightly under the barrage, seemingly half-dead before righting itself once more. The small break after the wind magic barrage is your opening to attack.

You rush in, swinging your club towards an exposed skull…

“Never in my wildest imaginations did I expect a human of all people to come and save my sisters,” She muses in a surprisingly level alto. “Still, I am eternally grateful for the services you have rendered, and the life that you have saved.”

The nymph bows to you, and the rest of her siblings follow suit and offer you thanks in their own gestures and words. If the future is set, what's the point of knowing it?

You seem momentarily confused. Fortunately, the nymph continues to speak. “There are many things we can offer you, Devil Summoner. I see that you have a mystical device on your wrist. Perhaps you may ask for the service of myself, or one of my sisters. Such aid would go a long way in your organization’s service. You are not the first of the Order to approach and entreat us to fight on their side.

“But if it is not our services that you wish for…the Napaea can offer you another gift.”

The leader of the demons removes a vial from her belt. Within the glass, the clearest water that you’ve ever seen swirls around and catches the sunlight that pokes through the overhead canopy of the forest.

“Water drawn from a fairy well deep within the earth,” She muses, “Taken care by our family for countless centuries ever since we migrated to the New World. To drink from the spring of the Napaea is to obtain for the briefest of moments, the gift of clairvoyance and prophecy. Such an elixir was sought after by those jealous of the Delphi. Though it is not drawn from a true well from our homeland, it is still potent enough to give visions of what is and may come.”

There is an audible silence, only punctuated by the sound of you swallowing the largest lump in your throat. The gift of foresight? There’s no freakin’ way. Seriously. You’ve had enough life-shattering revelations, no pun intended, to last you for a lifetime.

The momentary gift of prophecy. To see into the future...

You nervously lick your lips and try to avoid making as much noise as possible.

“Alternatively,” the nymph continues, “You may keep your favor for a future date should the need arise. We shall provide you with the needs to facilitate communication with us should you choose to…as you humans say, ‘save the date.

"The choice is yours, Devil Summoner."

False. It means you can then focus efforts to avert that future if you need to. Not sure how that could ever be considered worthless.

Hypothetical

Say you saw Fitz Magatama'd with the bodies of your friends around her.

Would you stop trusting her? Try to prevent that from happening somehow? What if trying to prevent her from doing that cause her to do that?

Why not just be Adrian and tackle things as they come, without visions plaguing your mind.
>>
>>44913675

The water grants a single vision of the far future, which could either be months or years before it comes to pass. By focusing on a desired image (i.e. your fate, your relationship with Fitz/Victoria, etc) the vision will show you where your current actions are taking you.

“I want one of you to join me,” You say after a long and methodical mental deliberation. There isn’t any use worrying about events that may or may not come true. You aren’t the kind of person to fret about that kind of thing.

You take things the way they come and try to adapt in the best way that you can. That’s how you’ve always been, and will continue to be.

The Napaea smiles as she tucks the vial back into her many pockets. “A wise choice, Devil Summoner, and not one that many people would take. It is a good thing to be concerned for one’s future, but to constantly agonize over it? Not healthy at all.

“May I recommend this younger sister?” She gestures to the Napaea with the bandages wrapped around your arm. “She is, after all, the one whose life is now in your hands. It is fitting that she repays that debt by travelling with you and the Order.”

The one she points to appears to be a younger, almost teenage-looking one in stark comparison to her elder sisters. “Are you sure, sister? That I am ready-”

“I would not have chosen you had you were not,” she replies softly. “Bring honor and great fame to the Fairy race, and protect the one who now owns your life.”

The younger fairy looks nervous before nodding with determination and giving her big sister a big hug. “I promise I will. You will one day hear of our exploits across the New World, sister.”

She then turns to you and bows deeply. “I am Napaea of the Fairy Clan. In accordance to the life that you’ve saved, I now offer my services to repay that debt. You will not find me wanting.”

The COMP makes the routine and familiar noise as it scans the demon, before whisking it away as a stream of data to be stored within the machine. Two whirs and a ding later, and the Napaea’s stats are displayed across the screen.

>+Napaea (Lv. 2) [70 % Loyalty]

>--Alignment: Neutral
>--Personality: Demure, Reverent
>--MP: 34

>--Resists Force/Weak to Ice
>--Weak Physical Abilities
>--Skills
>---Dia (Weak healing spell for one ally)

You don’t have the luxury to take your time, though. As you finish the cursory reading of your new demon, a burst of static crackles out from the speakers of the Gauntlet. There are one, two, three dubstep-like alterations in the noise before the voice of Alger comes to you in a crisp, loud and very irate tone.

“Brown, report in now!” The Major snaps. “Explain to me why in the unholy hell I’m seeing smoke rising from the Deep Woods! Your ass is the only one there at the moment, and since we can track you through the COMP, there’s no way you can possibly try to fake your way out of this. I need details, now!”

“We got into a nasty altercation with an Orthus,” You explain as you direct Centaur to start casting ice magic. “Centaur, use Bufu! Sorry about that, Major. At any event, the demon is dead, and we’re trying to run containment over here on our end. I’ll see what I can do, but if it gets any windier, then we’re pretty FUBAR up the creek without a paddle.”

“You can goddamn bet that you are,” Alger snarls, and you can literally feel his teeth grinding together from across the bandwidth. “Still, an Orthus demon out this far from the actual mountains? That’s not a good sign. Brown, do what you can to keep the fire contained. I’ll send the others to help you out. The five of you put together should have enough demons to stop the fire from spreading any further. Alger out.”

“Understood. Brown out.”

The connection makes a slurping noise as it breaks off. Lowering the Gauntlet, you decide to help out your demon as best as you can. A nearby stick manages to make for an impromptu shovel, and you’re going as fast as you can to dig trenches around the fire.

“Hey, can we get some-”

You try to as the rest of the Napaea for help, but it seems that they’ve disappeared while you were on the COMP with Alger.
Bugger.

Through whatever stroke of luck that’s been keeping an eye on you, you manage to avoid having any more other encounters with demons as you work with Centaur. Twenty minutes later, you can hear the sound of nearby footsteps coming in to converge on the clearing.

MacKay and Brady emerge from the Western entrance. Their clothes are covered in sweat and slashed nearly to ribbons, but they look no worse for the wear aside from superficial damage. They wave and nod at you before reaching for their COMPs and punching in a few commands.

Within seconds, two demons materialize besides the intrepid duo. Standing next to MacKay, the familiar Knocker appears. With a critical eye, the old demon appraises the situation and begins conjuring up ice in unison with your Centaur.

A loud “HEE-HO!” is the only warning you have a white blob wearing a blue jester hat hops to stand right next to Brady…
...only for it to yelp and retreat back the Englishman’s legs and hiss at the fire.

“Oh, fer God’s sakes, Jack!” Brady sighs, exasperated. “Yer the only demon I’ve got that can put out the bloody fire! I know how much you hate it, which is why I promised to give you all my ice cream fer the next two weeks, okay? We had a deal, remember?”

“I remember-ho,” the demon squeaks in a nasal voice, “But the hee-at-ho takes a awhile-ho to get used to, ho! Not all of us-ho are made to ree-sist summer temperatures-ho!”

Brady looks like he’s about to shout, but sighs and rubs his forehead. “Take yer time then…and just be sure to go put out the fire as soon as you’ve acclimatized.”

The blob seems to be happy with that deal. “Right away, ho!”

Fitz and Victoria are the next ones to show up within the next minute. Judging from the wear and tear on both of their clothing…and the pointed glares at anyone who’s gaze lingered too long at the noticeable rips in their fatigues, it looks like they had a really bad time.

Burn marks, claw slashes…and you’d normally be worried about the bloodstain on Victoria’s shirt except for the fact that it was purple of all things. So at least it didn’t belong to any of them.

Fitz takes a long whistle at the blazing inferno that the three of you plus your demons are trying to contain, as well as the demon corpse on the ground. “Jesus H. Christ, sawbones,” she drawls out in a slow and deliberate tone, “You certainly got busy since we saw each other last.”

You resist the urge to roll your eyes and retort with a quip of your own. “Could we get some help here?”

“But you didn’t say the magic word,” Victoria innocently points out before making a face at you. “I’m kidding, it is joke, see?” She raises her gauntlet and starts punching in commands. “Summoning my new demons…now!”

Two shapes materialize out of her Gauntlet: an emaciated bird-like thing with blue skin, and what looked like a sky-blue thumbtack with a hammer and wrench in its tiny hands. They look like cartoon characters more than anything else.

“Put out the fire, boys!” Victoria sing-songs with a gesture. The demons nod and begin casting their own ice spells. Huh. Appearances can be deceiving.

“And now…we save the best for last,” Fitz smirks as she starts typing at her own COMP. “I’m not gonna say something as cheesy as ‘I choose you’, but…check out this guy that I got!”

From out of her COMP, a woman in blue materializes from the stream of data. Clad in a dancer’s outfit that left little to the imagination, she held a provocative poise about her, but also a regal presence.

“Believe me when I say that I went through hell to get her…but it’s totally worth it!” Fitz laughs. “Asparas, I’m gonna need you to put out the fire with the rest of these chuckleheads. Think you can do it?”

“Your wish is my command, my mistress,” the demon intones. Raising her hands in the air as one would in a dance, the ice demoness begins to augment the anti-forest fire effort with her own magic.

“’Mistress’ she calls me!” Fitz whispers in an excited snicker. “Holy hell, this is too much! It feels so…exhilarating to be the giver of orders instead of being the ones to receive them. Don’t get me wrong, these demons are really nice guys and absolute besties to have in battle…but…ah, fuck, this is something else!”

The ex-policewoman's words degenerate into subdued, yet mirthful laughter as the forest blaze begins to finally die out. Victoria claps at the combined efforts of her demons as Brady comforts a very hot and bothered HEE-HO. Knocker and MacKay share a few private words before rejoining with the rest of you in the odd circle that you've formed around the tree stump.

You can't help but smile.

It's good to have the group back together.

Your smile gives way to a look of concern. “You guys need any healing? You look pretty exhausted and worse for the wear.”

Fitz rolls her eyes. “Yeah, sawbones, we know we look like shit,” she says in a jibbing manner. The crooked smile on her face seems to indicate that she’s back into her usual good mood. “But no thanks. Asparas took care of me and Victoria on our way here. Everything here is superficial.”

“Then if you don’t mind,” Brady interjects, “I’d like to help myself to some of that healing, Adrian. Had a nasty wanker check me too many times for my liking. Bruised and battered all over, I am.”

You give a wry smile as you have Pixie heal all of the wounds that both Brady and MacKay have sustained. As soon as they look much more hale and whole, they give you their thanks and sigh in great relief as their aches and pains disappear with the fading light of the spell.

“So what’d you guys end up catch- I mean getting?” Victoria quickly corrects herself before wrapping her arms around her demons. “I got myself a Gremlin and this lovely Tangata-manu! Both are extremely versatile and primarily specialize in ice magic!”

Brady frowns. “So…is this supposed to be some demon show-off contest or something?”

At Victoria’s somewhat mollified look, he grins and replies, “Because in that case, I have you beat! Take a look at this guy: Jack Frost, the winter fairy. And…”

After fiddling with his COMP and one burst of data later, another demon appears adjacent to the Jack Frost. It’s a small, green doll-like thing clutching a boomerang and staring at the group with a blank expression. “Mokoi! Little guy wanted to clock me with his boomerang before he considered joining up with me.”
