Deep in a rather uncharted sector of an unpopular arm of distant galaxy #015323, your ship has stumbled across a lush alien world. Most of the planet is covered in sprawling green jungle, or scintillating blue seas. Your captain orders you down via shuttle as part of an away team.

Who are you?

>I am a soldier, part of the Unity Federation. Our mission is to bring peace and order to all corners of the universe... whether they want it, or not.
>I am a trader, part of the Unity Corporation. Our mission is to bring wealth and prosperity to the company, and all of its subsidiaries... regardless of the impact of those who we are doing business with.
>I am a missionary, part of the Church of the Unity. Our mission is to spread the word of Unity across the stars... despite the thoughts, philosophies, or previous faiths of those we encounter.
>I am a settler, part of the Unity Federation. Our mission is to inhabit a designated far-flung planet, to act as an outpost for UF vessels... even if there are already locals inhabiting the planet.

First choice to three.

[ Hello again, /tg/. After trying out a couple of /civ/ quests, I found my attention wandering, especially since there was limited means to reach out to dedicated players. To remedy that, I have set up a twitter @AlienWorldQuest. Enjoy! ]

You can indeed change your vote, if you designate which vote you had previously selected, which you did. I would also like to additionally note that if after half an hour no consensus is reached, I will go by simple majority, coin flip, dice-roll or whichever one I think is the best, depending on the circumstance. Some selections in the future may require a roll of 1D100, of which I will take the best of the first three.

After a brief initial scan of the planet, your shuttle is designated to land in the most tactically secure area, the northern mountains.

To the south, through some mountain passes, there lies the foothills leading into a massive, sprawling jungle. Lifesign readings from most areas are abundant, but in the jungle they are positively dense.

To the north, there is a large ocean. Surprisingly, the salt concentration is low enough that it could theoretically be drinkable with minimal treatment.

To both the east and west, the mountain range spans. There is a large concentration of iron to the east, and an unknown mineral to the west.

As your shuttle coasts in to land, your communications officer's face pales. He has lost the feed to the battle cruiser stationed above. As you turn your faces skyward, you see a massive chain of explosions rip it apart. The debris seem almost magnetically drawn to the southern hemisphere. Your commanding officer takes quick stock of the situation.

Resources:
1 - Medium Range Shuttle
15 - Shuttle Fuel
14 - Battle Rifles
10 - Proton Pistols
5 - Proton Grenades
500 - Proton Ammunition (shared pool)
14 - Days of Compressed Rations

Personnel:
Command Officer Jackson
Communications Officer Stahl
Medical Officer Yorik
10 Privates

... and you.

You present your specialization sheet to Command Officer Jackson.

First to three votes.

>I am a combat specialist, a veteran of more than a few expeditions
>I am a diplomatic specialist, trained in the art of negotiation with hostiles

As a reconnaissance specialist, you are deployed to survey the surrounding area while the rest of the soldiers set up a rudimentary camp. Your CO has decided not to utilize the remaining shuttle fuel until they have a better grasp of the situation. The impact of the lose of the ship is apparent in your comrades faces as you suit up in your camouflage, like you, they are most likely focused on the question of the hour. "Will we ever get home?".

Because of your specialization, your CO Jackson has decided to allow you to explore in whatever direction you think would be the most beneficial.

You head along a narrow mountain pass. To your eye, what you are traversing seems to be some kind of game trail. As for the animal or animals that made it, you cannot say. Hearing sounds of activity over the next hillock, you drop into a low crouch.

You sit in quiet amazement at what you observe. A large valley is laid out before your eyes, glittering with some sort of blue-grey crystal deposits that seem to glow. Large organic polyps sit on these, breaking them down and absorbing the fragments in semi-translucent pouches. Every so often, a skittering beetle about the size of a Labrador removes the more bloated-looking polyps, and returns to the tunnel from which it emerged.

They don't seem to have noticed your presence. You are currently equipped with a battle rifle, a pistol, fifty rounds of ammunition, and a single grenade.

Not sparing any expense by way of your breath, you hurry back in all haste to report to Officer Jackson about your discovery. His eyebrows clinch together in concern, furrowing his brow in a worryingly familiar expression. He orders you to return with five soldiers to return to see if the creatures so near to base are hostile or not. The five grunts which are to accompany you range from excited, to sharing your concern.

WHY EVEN LIVE
>>
Your small squad moves along the route which you had previously established. The dual suns of the system hang high overhead, not giving away any clues as to what time of day it might be on the planet.

The polyp-harvesting insects you previously observed are still present, about thirty of them present on the valley floor at any time. They don't seem to have any particular offensive capabilities beyond a pair of grasping talons they utilize to move the polyps.

Your squad advances on the floor of the valley. You pocket a dull blue-grey crystal out of habit, for further analysis. The nearest insect to you approaches, moving a few feelers over the squad.

Resource Added: + Blue-Grey Crystal Sample

A couple of the members of your squad are a little skittish, but you decide to attempt to interact with the alien life form. Offering a couple of cautious pats on the top of its chitinous body, you present one of the crystal samples you have taken to it.

It returns the gesture with a high-pitched trilling, and gently takes the sample in its jaws, depositing it in the sac of a nearby polyp. As you look up, you see that many of the insects in the valley had paused, awaiting the results of this interaction. They return to their labors.

A few moments later, a more fearsome-looking creature emerges from a nearby tunnel. It has a collection of feelers in much greater abundance than the simple pair the harvesters seem to possess. It stops the one you had just interacted with, and they seem to have some kind of exchange. It emits a similar high-pitched trilling, and begins to frantically skitter towards the nearest tunnel.

Funny story about that, actually- no, seriously, people have found it interesting.

I DO have a weak stomach for horror movies and shit like that. Reason being?

I watched Starship Troopers late at night when I was like, 6. I was a pretty sheltered kid growing up, and we had just gotten HBO, so I was being naughty and checking it out since I was told not to watch it. All the blood and gore and junk gave me nightmares for months, and from then on, I wasn't really able to handle so much as a gunshot wound let alone anything actually gorey until I was about 13. Shit had scarred me.

To this day I'm still jittery and squemish about gore flicks. I can handle them a lot better, but they're not my first, second, or third choice of entertainment.
>>
>>44899744
I'd agree to head back once we finished scouting and high tail to the wreck of the ship.
>>
Your continued exploration of the valley yields more than one significant find.

Around a corner, you find a large pile of bubbling organic mass. There are several workers tending to a much larger insect-like entity. It is easily the size of a pair of cows, and then some. A couple of the insects deposit polyps before it, which are greedily consumed by a large, searching tongue. The grey paste it excretes is then taken by the workers, and is used to form a geometrically perfect... building? Upon solidification, it turns a chitinous black.

You also note that in some areas around the structure, they have simply spread the grey paste around on the rocky floor of the mountain. Some harvesters carry around large green polyps, seeding the paste with what looks like grass.

A soldier calls out in shock, pointing up to a ledge overseeing this section of the valley. You catch a glimpse of a bipedal creature a little shorter than a human. It has greyish skin, matching the mountain's palette, and large beetle-black eyes. As you watch, it retreats up the ledge, and out of sight.

Reeling with the shock of your discoveries, you direct the rest of the squad back through the valley to base camp. The insect you first interacted with seems to be following you, from a slight distance.

When you return, you relay the information you have acquired to CO Jackson. He sighs, and rubs his temples, sitting down upon a piece of rock, and contemplating the binary suns. The rest of the squad appears to have succeeded in establishing a small base camp perimeter.

He orders you to start by destroying the creature that followed you back to base, it's just too great a risk. Following this, he barks at you to explore in another direction.

You venture through a mountain pass to the northern beaches. A massive blue expanse greets you, the waves dancing off each other. The water here tastes a little salty, but with some minor treatment, you should have a nearly infinite source of drinking water.

You notice that there are more than a few trees here on the beach. They bear strange fruit, and their roots extend into the surf.

You note the mouth of a very large cave here, and there's an undulating bass tone that rises and fades rhythmically from within. Your weapons and helmets are all equipped with appropriate light sources to risk the cave, if you desire.

You opt to examine the trees in greater detail. Upon further reflection, it would seem that while the vast majority of the large roots extend into the ocean, this is not a rule. Three of the trees have massive roots which quickly dive under the sand, heading inland. There are much smaller roots connecting each tree to each other below the sand. The fruit itself is interesting. The skin is a little tough, but when you break through it, you find that it is almost entirely water. Pure, crisp, and clean.

Your insect-like comrade appears to enjoy a single piece of fruit, draining it with a proboscis which extends from the space in between its jaws.

The undulating tonality from within the cave ceases.

You do not have automated drones, unfortunately those were aboard the ship when it exploded. You are a member of the very first away-team, the drones would have been sent down before you to ascertain if the planet's atmosphere could sustain human life or not. Your harvester companion skitters forward into the darkness of the cave for a moment. Heavy footfalls seem to shake the ground, as your harvester returns to you. It chirps once, in its trilling tones, and a huge chitinous beast emerges from the cave.

It stands at least twenty feet tall, on quadruped legs. A massive maw opens. The aperture is large enough to consume the entire squad in a single lunge. A quartet of beady black eyes observes your crew for a moment, despite your cover, before a reverberating bellow loud enough to crack the face plate on one of your squad's helmets echoes forth from it. The rest of your squad levels their weapons on it.

The massive beast makes no move to pursue you, but bellows again, shaking you to your hardened trooper core.

Down the shore some distance, you hear the faint echoes of a similar bellow. It eyes you blearily again for a few moments, and returns to the cave. Even fainter in the distance, a few moments later, another echoed bellowing.

After a few more minutes, the sounds become imperceptible.

The small harvesting insect scuttles around for a moment in a circle, waving its feelers as the bellowing fades into the distance. You trudge the weary path back to your camp.

The sight makes you fall to your knees.

Blood. Blood everywhere.

It's splattered on the ground, on the stone fortifications that were only recently drug into place, and most devastatingly, on the patch of ground where your shuttle once was.

There is little time for grief, as a hissing sound echoes from above. A half a dozen creatures are crawling down toward you, and they seem to have anything, but positive intent. They appear to be some sort of horrible crossbreeding between spider and scorpion. They move down the vertical wall on six legs, curled tails dripping venom as they make their way down toward you. They're about the size of cats.

A hearty cry tears from the mouths of you, and your comrades. A flurry of plasma rounds is laid down with such proficiency that your old drill sergeant might even shed a tear. As the last of the corpses of the unholy things drop to the ground, you have a moment to recon the situation.

It would appear the shuttle was dragged away, there are some gouges in the stone leading south. While there is a lot of blood, and plenty of plasma burns on the stone, there doesn't appear to be a single body. The rest of the equipment that was scattered about appears to be missing as well.

A single... thing sits in the middle of your camp. It's about a foot high, and vaguely egg shaped. It is composed of the black chitin you saw the harvesters using to construct the building in the western mountain ranges.

You take a last look around the desolate area that once was, briefly, home. Deciding it would be better not to deal with the egg-like construction that was left in the wake of the attack, you trudge onward.

The path you take through the mountain appears to be devoid of any further hostile lifeforms, but you can certainly hear the echoing cries of perhaps hundreds of the crawling horrors which you faced in base camp echoing from caverns in other passes.

As you reach the foothills, the gouges in the earth seem to simply disappear. Unsatisfied with this, and realizing whoever removed the shuttle likely did not know how to operate it, you order your men to search the area around the tracks.

After a few minutes of searching, one of your men exclaims, motioning you over. It would appear at the very end of the tracks, he has discovered the concealed mouth of a tunnel. It leads south.

Satisfied with knowing that, at the very least, you know what has happened to the shuttle, you and your team press into the foothills.

Here, you are greeted by lone, towering flowers. Their petals easily span thirty feet each, and their stems could be more easily described as tree trunks. One or two stand at the top of every hill, more near the streams which flood out of the mountains, and toward the jungle. Your chitinous comrade follows your every step, as you progress.

As you pass under some of the towering flora, you crest a hill, to reveal a large lake. You can easily pass around it from here, towards the jungle.

Several different species appear to be drinking at this body of water, including one posessing four, spindly legs. The herd of them look up as you approach, fleeing into the distance at astounding speeds. There are some slower mammal-looking plains dwellers munching on the grass. They have a pair of long tusks, and thick, somewhat hairy, hides.
