PREVIOUSLY IN THE MAGIC SHOP UNIVERSE: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Magic+Shop

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3mEqqb2oWY

In the world of Valaer, the Battle of Tirinia changed everything. That was 680 years ago.

Here lies the human Kingdom of Therindel - less a Kingdom than a confederacy of lordships, duchies, principalities, city-states, et cetera - banded together under the constant threat of attack from the mysterious Wood Elves of the eastern land of Xalfacia. For many centuries, these lords and rulers have bickered amongst each other for the right to succeed the King who fell in battle at Tirinia against the Elves.

And now the Kingdom of Therindel is a veritable hotbed of adventure, riches, and loot to be enjoyed by adventurers from all over the world. From the lost cities of the Elves, to the grand old monsters of old, to the buried treasures of those who came before. All across the region, adventurers seek fortune and glory! From the Great Frozen Patch to the Southern Plains of Vistoria, and across the ocean to foreign lands, adventurers of all shapes and sizes test their mettle here in the Kingdom of Therindel! Where heroes are made and fortune is won!

You are not one of those people.

While you enjoy the adventuring life and traveling the great distances of Therindel, things could be better. There is a town in the middle of disputed territories in Therindel, just north of Vistoria, taking a left off the main highway, west of the Great Frozen Patch, and nestled right on top of the Elder River delta (not to be confused with Delta Town of the Younger River delta). Very few know about this town, and why should they? It’s a one horse town built next to a nearly depleted Diamond mine. It is known as Ohlendorf’s Drift.

You are going there to be their first Town Adventurer in decades.

[1/2]

It has been two months since the port was completed in Ohlendorf’s Drift. And in that time, the mine dried up. The mineshaft was abandoned. Picks, cutting tools, and minecarts were discarded and left to nature’s blessing. And now the miners, a great many of them, had left Ohlendorf’s Drift for better work. Despite the work you had put in, the lack of ships arriving had discouraged them. Not a single ship had arrived to trade or transport goods or even to visit. You sat with Dottie on a bench overlooking the port. And almost everyday it would be devoid of foreign boats and ships.

At least, until last week. A ship had arrived carrying clothes and fabrics from the Orc Lands. The traders on board requested to be quartered, and in the meantime allowed their wares to be sold freely to others. There was plenty of it. The finest silk and fabrics from the lands of the Orcs. There were no greater designer outfitting than from the minds of the Orcs and their large but deceptively dexterous fingers. Dottie herself was amazed by it, and you could probably understand it. She has probably no idea of what lies beyond Ohlendorf’s Drift. Beauty, discoveries, adventure, the great lands near and far and far and near.

And pretty soon, fortune smiled upon the town as well. More ships came, apparently confusing the port for Delta Town. But when they found that food and supplies here were much cheaper than at Delta Town, they began practically swimming amongst the fish and the wood they were buying. The humble port started growing.
>>

[2/2]

Now today, even though Ohlendorf’s Drift was smaller from lack of the miners, more permanent residents were coming in from nearby villages. The Hawkins family was hiring more farmhands as well to help in their latest harvest, and while they lived a great distance away, they remained an important fixture in the food business. The Windsors continued their fishing as well, now backed up by more professional fishermen who came to fish in the surprisingly lively waters of the Elder River.

It was growing. There was bumps along the way, yes. But, it was growing. This town isn’t dying anymore, no sir. You and Muck watch as the residents start building a new jetty on their port for much larger galleons and trade ships. With Miss Sedere’s teachings, they were going about it very methodically. “Well,” says Muck. “The town is looking good.”

“Yep,” you say with a happy smile on your face.

Dottie walks up next to you, tapping the bottom of her spear against the wooden walkway to get your attention. “Hartmut.” You look at her, crossing your arms. “I was just looking for you. The Townspeople have a surprise for you.”

“Oh?” You blink. “What is it?”

She smirks, tilting her head. “How about you take a guess first?”

“Is it a cake?” you ask.

She quirks her brow. “Nope.” Darn. You could go for cake. Especially something sweet. Really, you honestly haven’t had any sweets in ages. Last time you had a pastry was… maybe around when you left home. Wow, that’s been a while actually. “Come on.” She takes your hand and starts leading you and Muck. “Close your eyes.”

You place your hand over your eyes, shutting them for good measure. “You’re not going to walk me into a canal are you?”

“Nooo, I’d never do that,” says Dottie. She’s probably going to do it. But as you walk, you begin speculating more and more on what in particular this surprise is. Now that you think about it, what exactly did you do to warrant something like this surprise? All you did was recommend the idea of building a port. You didn’t stop the miners from leaving, nor did you slay any particularly big monsters besides that one dragon months ago. What’s so special? You hear some whispers and murmurs around you as you suspect you’re getting closer. “Alright. Open your eyes.”

And right before you was a statue of you. You were standing atop a stone pedestal, decorated with diamond waves shimmering at your feet. And in your hands was your family sword, not held like the usual way, but held the way you and your fathers and their fathers and so on have held it. You stare out to the sea, a slight smile on your face. The artist carving this statue from granite did not embellish mind you, nor did he downplay you. This is quite possibly the most honest interpretation of your appearance you have seen yet, from anybody. Even you have a tendency to embellish but this…

“We built it in your honor,” says the Mayor, smiling at you. She looks up at it. “We used to look down at you. Now we can look up at you. Those diamonds at your feet were reserved from the mine. They are the absolute last diamonds in Ohlendorf’s Drift.” Wow. This is an honor, they saved the last remaining diamonds instead of selling them off. “You saved this town.” She pokes her cane against the placard on the pedestal. “Read it.”

You lean over, then look at Dottie. She smiles proudly, motioning you on to read it. You look down at it.

“I don’t know what to say.” You quickly grab Dottie and hug her tight. She remains frozen in your grasp, surprised, and a little embarrassed at being the center of a scene. “Thank you.” You let her go, smiling proudly at her. You can just feel the tears running at the corners of your eyes right now. “Honestly, truly, thank you. This… I don’t know if I should be honored like this, all I did was come up with an idea.”

“Sometimes that is all we need,” says the Mayor. She pats your shoulder, smiling as well. “You have done this town a service, Mister Halbschwert. And if you wish, this town will always be your home for you. We will never forget what you have done for us and in turn we will do our best to pay it back in full.”

“Well, you don’t need to,” you say. “I mean, I don’t know how you pay back for something like this. It’s…” You’re still in a bit of shock. “I don’t know how to explain it. All I did was come up with an idea. The rest of you built it. We hired someone to help us build it. In the end, it wasn’t just me, it was all of you.” You look around to the humbled townspeople. “All of you, you built that port, it wasn’t just me. That’s why we have towns, so we can… we can make homes with one another.”

“Regardless of the reasoning,” says the Mayor. “We honor you for coming and helping this town.” You look up at the statue again, and gently pat your hand against the smooth pedestal. “Mister Halbschwert, you are this town’s hero, our own adventurer.” You sniffle a little, rubbing a tear out of your eye. “Accept it.”

“I will,” you say.

Muck happily sits on your shoulder. “It’s strange, looking up at you for once.”

“Not really,” you say jokingly. A townsperson comes to shake your hand, then another, and more as well. They all happily congratulate you on this fine achievement.

But as this happens, Muck asks you this. “… so what now?”

Oh. Well. Good question.

“Well, there’s one person we need to consult first on that, Muck.” You pat your belly, grinning. “My stomach. Let’s get some food in us, decide on that later, alright?” Muck nods. The two of you finish shaking hands and receiving congratulations from various townsfolk, then head on over to have a quiet place to yourself.

Dottie however walks next to her, her smile gone. “You’re not going to stay?” she asks.

“Well…” You shrug, reaching into your bag and pulling out a paper wrapping of some fish cuts you sliced yesterday. “It’s an option, Dottie.”

She frowns a little. “I like having you here though. I mean, yeah, there isn’t a lot you can do. But, you helped save this town. Least you could do is make it your home,” she says.

“That’s what I intend,” you say. “But… I’m not sure if I feel like settling down just yet.” You and her stop up outside of a shop, a newly built one mind you. “Dottie, I love what you’ve done to honor me here and all but erm…” How do you put this? “I don’t think I feel like settling down, not quite yet.”

“Still got a bit of wanderlust to you?” she asks.

“Could say that.” You sigh deeply, taking a bite of a salmon piece. You offer some to her, and she shakes it off. Fair enough. “Dottie, there’s so much to the world you or I haven’t seen. I just can’t be ‘okay’ with what I have now.”

The ones who need the little job done. The places that the Heroes have forgotton, or never heard of that still need help.

The road to the highway is going to need watching for a while. Until things get big enough that bandits and such don't find it to be easy pickings.

There might be another town out there that needs what we have extra of, and have extra of what we need. That's not gonna happen if nobody goes there and helps.

Besides, I want this place to feel like home, not like "I could have done more."

“Because there are people out there need more people like me,” you say. “I mean, think of how much better a world this’d be if everybody would help each other.” You shrug. Therindel isn’t as nice of a place it seems. Nobles always squabbling between each other, monsters always threatening to get people in the night, Vogelvolk being Vogelvolk, the whole land and what not. “The highway needs watching, people always need little things done, and there’s always a town that might need what this place has got. Nothing’s going to happen if nobody does anything.”

Her frown subsides a little, but all in all she still looks a bit sad. She nods slowly. “I see.”

“Yeah, that’s just my thinking,” you say. “I want this place to feel like home though.”

“It’ll be where you rest your heart, eh?” she says. You nod. Precisely. “I can respect that, Hartmut.” She folds her arms, looking down, still a little sadly. “What about your old home though?”

You wave her off, smiling a bit. “That’s my heart is too. I’d love to go back there one day but right now, don’t think I’m done with Therindel just yet.”

“Right, right.” She starts smiling again. You and her sit down on the walkway, letting your legs hang free and your boots skim across the cool waters of the Elder River. “I really should be thanking you anyway. This town is my home. Everything about it, from the old mine, to the town hall, to the river, and now that new port.” Her smile goes wider. “I can’t wait to see it get bigger.”

“Not gonna wander off then?” you ask.

“Adventuring ain’t for me,” she explains. “I just… ain’t in the mood for adventuring like you are.” She shrugs. “I like it here.” She sighs, then gently rests her head on your shoulder. “Thanks, Hartmut.”

“You’ve thanked me enough,” you say.

“That’s what you think.”

The two of you look back to see Wyborn and Dafne peeking around a corner, staring at you. “I think they see us,” whispers Wyborn.

“I hear you turn into an Elf if you kiss the wrong boy,” she whispers.

You and her look forward again. “Yeah, they don’t see us,” says Dafne. “Ya doof.”

“Well, Hartmut. I must say again, thank you. And I know what you’re thinking, you’re probably going to be sick of hearing it. But… well I can’t thank you enough. This is my home. I’ve lived here most of my life, and by the King I will live here the rest of it.” Dottie smiles happily, then gently kisses you on the cheek. You feel a quick rush of heat run up to your cheeks, oh goodness.

“She kissed him!” whispers Dafne. “Is she turning into an Elf?”

“Shut up,” says Wyborn. “That’s a myth.”

Dottie stands up happily, patting you on the head. “Well, I should get back on patrol. You’re always welcome to have dinner at my house with me and mine, Hartmut.” You nod. Oh, that would be a delight. You stand up as well, nodding to her again. “Until next time.” She pats your arm, then rests her hand on the pommel of her sword as she walks away, whistling to herself.

“She didn’t turn into an elf!” yells Dafne. “I was lied to!”

“Hey! You’re Halbschwert ain’t ya?” One of the sailors calls you over. The port, small as it is, is alive with sailors and traders moving their stuff in and out. Ships from all over Therindel are lashed to the jetties, waiting for their next movement from their captains. You walk over on to him, smiling. The sailor grins, a gap between his teeth and a gold tooth replacing one of his frontal teeth. “Hey there. I heard of ya, you’re the fella with the weirdo style of swording ain’t ya?”

You shrug. “It’s not that weird.”

“Well, hey, I tell ya, I’m from the homeland same as you,” he says. Really? “You’re the talk of the town! ‘Bout how ya went and journeyed to Therindel with you and Muck there, slayed some beasts! And you’re the talk of the town here too!” Wow, as if you needed more to build up your ego, terrific!

“Do my parents talk about me much?” you ask.

“Oh, all the time,” he says. “They’re quite proud.” Really though, that’s what matters, how you look in the eyes of your mother and father. You smile, crossing your arms. “I say, I say, I can’t wait to hear more from ye, you planning on entering the tournament up at the High City?”

“They’re holding a tournament?” you ask.

“Oh, yeah, yeah!” He nods quickly, rubbing his hands together. “They got things like jousting, archery, swordfighting. I hear you might make some dividends in the swordfighting.”

“Well…” You shrug, your smile dropping a bit. “I mean, I’ve been rejected from tournaments before because of the way I fight. I wouldn’t want to waste my time going there just to be turned away.”

You suppose you can’t stop them from thinking that. Oh well. “Anyway, I gotta get back to work. King’s blessing with ya.” You nod to him, and off he goes, whistling away.

You sigh, leaning on a post and looking out at all the ships. Small fishing ships alongside large seatreaders from all the way across the ocean. If you didn’t already feel small, well, this was making you feel even smaller. Muck had this to say, “You know, maybe you could go into shipping.”

“No thanks,” you say. “The trip to Therindel was more than enough for me.”

“Fair,” he says. “A tournament at the High City though. That will be something.”

“Well, it all depends of course if I even get in,” you say. You look around, then look back at the town. It was more alive than you ever had seen before. The first day you walked into Ohlendorf’s Drift was probably the most miserable day in your life. Few pieces of currency, no jobs, utter desperation kicking at your heels. Back then, the general atmosphere was… not great. There weren’t as many people out. The shops were all closed. Kids were running and gallivanting about without much care.

But now. You smile happily. You look at Dottie, who is busy directing a newcomer to the tavern. The Mayor as well sits on a bench, happily basking in the atmosphere of it all. And in the canals, Dafne and Wyborn are busy catching fish on their way into the sea with nets.

“Ah, I see.” Muck tilts his head. “So, this place is your new home then?”

You shrug, smiling. “Home is the heart is after all. All the big adventures in the lifetime aren’t going to mean anything if I have no place to call home. And well…” You motion your arms out to all of Ohlendorf’s Drift. The now-growing hustle and bustle, the new in-construction schoolhouse for the children, the incming ships, all of it. “This is home. For now at least.”

“I see.” The two of you begin walking down the bridge towards the town proper. “So, in any event, a tournament in the High City. You know how prestigious those are, yes?” You nod. “Surely you must understand if they reject you.”

“If they reject me, fine,” you say. “I’ll go someplace else. Or just come right back here. I mean, come on. Ohlendorf’s Drift is my home now but…” You motion to all of Therindel in the background of the town. The high mountains in the far distance marking the Great Frozen Patch, the Elder River running up and alongside the Younger River, the great forests and hills and beaches, all of it. “That doesn’t mean I can’t make more homes.”

“So the adventure continues?” he asks.

You worry too much anon, honestly.

Though, I did originally intend for the Quest to actually end with the town drying up and the port having failed. I didn't do that because I figured that to be way too bleak.

Meh, I'll stick around if only to see him succeed in reviving his kind of girlfriend. I think of people got mad because of the sudden tone shift of the story compared to previous Magic shop stories.

Speaking of bad thoughts I now know why people hate Lotte. She reminds me of Pirate Waifu did you base Lotte on her?
>>
>>44851317
Personally I'd rather not revisit the story, or even mention it at all. The ending for Kasimir I had in mind would probably further provoke bad feelings towards it anyway.

And as for Lotte, I didn't really use anybody as a base for her. She originally just started out as a stupidly corrupt but still loyal patriot of the Empire when the Quest was in its infant stages.
>>
>>44851390
That bad huh, So that essentially became your Star Wars Christmas special. I remember it so well because I was the one who mentioned to give her a helmet.

She's Corrupt? I thought she was jsut stupidly loyal. The reason why she reminded me of the pirate of your anonkun quest was because she keeps putting her foot down her mouth.

Will you ever get back to finishing your pirate story.
>>
>>44851438
Lotte is a very complicated character. I did away with the wholly corrupt part but left in a few bits of it here and there, her experience with the criminal underworld being one of them. As a result, she is quite loyal to the Empire, but her corruption is less greed and more a desire to advance and make herself great in the face of crushing loneliness from having her family disown her and from having her Flight School classmates slowly be whittled away by attrition, defection, and desertion. It might not seem very obvious, but Rhys is probably her last bit of family she has left.

And no, I won't. Too much time has passed and I think that metaphorical ship has sailed. It was something I started writing on impulse and I learned the lesson to not write things on impulse. That and Meropis.

And she took his retirement fund away from him.

Why doesn't she just go find the other deserters or is Rhy's wereabouts too easy.

Also what about the ghost quest that you tagged with Kashmir?
>>
>>44851634
Because any deserter that deserts gets the firing line. Lotte doesn't have the political pull to have them not be executed. Plus, they're also dead.

Wandering Spirit is also on hold too. I had considering running it without Kasimir included at all but I felt that wouldn't be natural.

Is that one of the reasons why she is vying for power now?

Also wasn't it her fault that we are running from the Empire in the first place or did they actually notice a few missing bars.

Also I agree going without Kashimir wouldn't make sense either since their after the same thing.

There are a few.

1. She and Rhys are part of a very cursed Flight School class. Out of the fifty that were originally enrolled, only she, Rhys, Pil, Russ, Eudora, and Jarik actually made it to the timeline of the Quest. While Flight School does have a high washout rate, this particular class had an unusually high defection rate which can result in some loyalties being questioned.

2. She used to be a Princess. She's doesn't really settle for having "enough".

Also, it technically isn't her fault. You did make off and run off with some pieces of aurodium. In a very complicated law point of view, you stole aurodium from an Imperial cruiser (due to the Republic Navy being reformed into the Imperial Navy) along with damaging it, tantamount to Grand Theft.

The thing was, how did they find out? I thought she squealed because it was her 'duity'

Also why the focus on Rhys there is still a couple more who are in the empire.
>>
>>44851893
It is her duty to report all crimes. They found out via the big hole you punched into the Bailiff to get at the treasure.

2. Pil's dead, Russ is an unlikeable goon, Eudora and Jarik while they have graduated are at posts too far for Lotte to even interact with. Plus, by the timeline of the Quest, at least one of them has actually successfully defected.

So it was her fault that she squealed on us then and got the Empire on our asses then. I mean they cou;dn't have known it was from Rhys unless its from him.

But somehow despite being too far awayshe can travel across jurisdictions just to chase us.

That doesn't make sense.
>>
>>44851814
The thing is, she totally could've at least tried to press for a finder's fee, because the Empire wouldn't have been able to find the ship without the work they put in. Vader had no issue putting out a bounty for the Falcon, or compensating Fett if Han died in carbon freezing.
>>
>>44852037
There's two very different circumstances. One is hunting an incredibly dangerous criminal, the other is catching up with friends. The Empire doesn't like time being wasted on the latter.

>>44852042
Again, different circumstances. Darth Vader is Darth Vader, he can command and lord over cash from the treasury. Lotte has to pay for almost everything herself and while she does have lots of money, she has nowhere near enough to compensate you properly for the treasure.

So her sicking bounty hunters on us is her way of 'catching up' .

But why did she sound so unprepared. My biggest issue with her was she knew about it. Let us do all the leg work and not expect us to be mad?

She knows us enough to predict our movements but not enough to know we will be mad that she will steal treasure from us?
>>
>>44852193
She banked on you finding all the pieces of the map to the treasure before actually going there, allowing her at least some time to figure out a reward when you did find it. You going way too early basically forced her hand.
>>
>>44852232
She had a couple of months to figure that out since travelling to each new system too roughly two weeks a piece and it took awhile to find it.

I don't know I feel that she's only as competent as the plot demands of it.

We'll see in the later stages of the Quest but it's late and I am tired.

So night night.
