This is Boruto Quest, a quest set in the universe of Naruto. It is during the generation of Naruto's son, shortly after everyone has graduated from their Genin exam. I haven't kept up with the series beyond the end of the original one, so this one is intended to recapture the feel of that time of Naruto. I will not be incorporating the main show or the Boruto movie's plot into the quest, although some recognizable characters will be present. You play as a 12 year old Chunin graduate named Takeshi. You have been assigned a Jounin squad leader named Hanto, and your two squadmates are Kichiro, a young delinquent, and Ai, a strange social outcast of a girl. You are of average skill in most aspects, although your sharp intelligence, and your jack of trades skill set have brought you far. You have just recently graduated to a Chunin after winning the final tournament, and it is several days after. Your first mission has begun.

The path that you're walking on slowly grows more and more remote, and thin. You take several forks in the road deeper into the rolling hills and forests of the south, walking for about a full hour until reaching a small bridge. It's large enough for about two horse carriages to pass through, and painted red.

For the most part, the group has been quiet. You can tell that aside from your friend, they're a pretty serious bunch. Naota doesn't speak a word as expected, and Yasu simply keeps in line with her father's lead. The five of you step onto the bridge, and Sarasu suddenly stops.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQQ6QBmRAFA

He looks to the left, and to the right. The man completely halts all movement, and everyone around you is making a point to be especially still. Maybe he's listening?

Sarasu turns around, and looks at the four of you. "The river..They're using it to cover their movement. I can't hear them, and we won't be able to detect their vibrations for tracking. Well, I mean, I don't know that they're doing that, but.."

Yasu grins. "It's what you would do, if you knew we were coming."

He nods. "That's right. Would you provide us some cover, Takkun?"

He raises his arms up in an odd sort of handsign. "Sir!"

"Hidden Mist Jutsu!"

Fog flows freely from the river into the forest in front of all of you, thickly obscuring sight.

Yasu starts to walk forward. "We should really use the forest to circumvent them..But, there are several options here. What do you think, Takeshi?"

>A. Split into two groups. One goes forward on the path, the other goes through the forest and flanks the enemy from behind. (Specify who goes where)

After a brief moment of discussion, you decide among yourselves that Takkun and Naota are the ones most suited for a recon mission. You suggest that they scout ahead and report back with information before you act as a group, especially if you're considering splitting your forces.

Sarasu chuckles at this. "Thorough. It's generally against my nature to be that way, but it's truly the right path if we want to be the safest. We will wait here for a short while until the two of you report back."

The pair leaves you, silently slipping into the mist. Now it is just you, Yasu, and Sarasu, and you quietly take cover behind the trees nearby. The air is still, and quiet, the mist unmoving.

Not by any means an urgent question, Mini, considering we're about to enter an action sequence, but...

Is it possible for us to learn puppeteering, in the future? I've read arguments in previous threads, but they mostly seem rooted in filler.

Basically: are puppets a skill the Leaf Village even offers? If so, is it something we can even train to a useful level without specializing in it? Like, we could stop our genjutsu training here and it'd remain useful - do puppets require significantly more investment before they start getting useful, cost of materials aside?
>>
>>44824280
>>44824253
Aaaah.

Well, this, then. Not in those exact words, but... sure, asking to know more about our (ex?) sensei could be fun. Even if it's not the right time or place.
>>
>>44824372
Every single time you've gone to the shop you've had the option to purpose a beginner's puppet to start training with. It's always available.

I think a basic human puppet would work well with genjutsu.

I don't think we should specialize in puppets though.

You decide to quietly wait, stilling your mind and focusing on preparing yourself rather than wasting time talking. As your first mission as a Chunin, you don't want to disappoint in the slightest. It's roughly ten minutes before Takkun and Naota return, incredibly fast really. Either that or the enemy is close, just as Sarasu had expected.

They tell you how there seems to be several small enemy forces placed along the road. The first is likely a lookout used to alert the others, but with the fog up they may have a difficult time. They tell you that it could be possible to push through with pure offense before they can react, or to try and pick them off one by one carefully. Perhaps even try to lead them back to the bridge.

>A. Push forward with the might of your entire group
>B. Move forward, picking off the enemy one by one
>C. Draw them back, where the rest of your group will ambush them.
>D. Write-in
>>
>>44824447
Yeah, god no. Specialization falls flat in Quest threads unless the QM enforces it, because voters want everything all the time. A little while ago we were talking about specializing in genjutsu, and then we spent our training arc picking up water jutsu and taijutsu, and our free Hokage-given jutsu on flash-steps rather than magic traps, and so on.

I was just wondering if "puppets" were even worth including in the long wishlist of skills the thread wants to pick up.

>>

>B. Move forward, picking off the enemy one by one

As a group, you decide to use Sarasu's suggested tactics for stealth and engage the enemy by picking them off one by one. The fog has been up for a while now, so the enemy is likely suspicious while it remains thick. You'll have to be quick, but quiet.

You huddle together, getting ready to spread apart as individuals. Takkun chuckles. "You know sensei, Takeshi isn't aware of our games. Do you wanna have a race, today? I think it'd be fun."

The slightly wrinkled Jounin grumbles. "Perhaps..May as well. You see, Takeshi, we always like to see who can take out the most enemies the fastest by the end of the fight. Whoever has the lowest number has to pay for half of everyone's dinner when we get back."

Yasu puts a hand on your shoulder, and leans in. "This isn't optional, either. You snooze you lose."

Naota grins. "We should have lobster."

Takkun chuckles. "You're just saying that because it's less likely you'll pay with more people here.."

Sarasu stands up straight, and looks towards the fogs. "Alright! Enough chatter! We move through the forest until all the enemies are dead, and rendezvous once we've left the fog. Any questions!?

You're all ready. The five of you dash into the woods, and you quickly lose sight of your team-mates, but keep a close eye on the road. In the distance you can dulled movement, what you imagine is your allies already attacking. You'll have to keep up if you don't want your wallet to hurt.

You spot a man standing still, looking towards the road. You're standing on the opposite side of the street. You think you can see another figure up ahead deeper into the mist.

>A. Throw a rock to cause the nearest man to look away, and then hit him with a senbon.

You weren't doing a backflip.

You don't have a 100% chance of making this. The dude is far away in the mist, and you're throwing needles at veins in his throat.
>>
>>44825700
Not necessarily veins. Trachea is also acceptable, as is the spine. Really, the only way it'd be bad is if we hit his tendons and nothing else.

Well you have to call your shot regardless. The standard point you'd aim for would be an artery, but if you want to go for something else, please state that.
>>
>>44825760
Throat in general. It's a vague impression of a figure some 20-30 feet away. We'll aim for the throat in general on the far one and hope for the best, and hit the nearest one in the usual spot.

Even if we don't have to worry about friendly fire, one senbon is much more cost effective than any other option, if we can actually pick up the kill with it.

...oh wait, there's still the other guy. Well, we don't know there aren't *two more* guys there, or more...
>>
>>44825961
Ignore this. I'm retarded.

Gonna call shot for throat for the far one. It's the biggest lethal target, I think.
>>
>>44825997
Quietly as possible, you draw two senbon from your weapon's pouch. You want to try and take care of this a little more quickly than you usually might, so you're going to take a tad bit of a risk. The man near to you seems to be just within the range of sigh of the second man, so if you're quick you should be able to take them both out before either can react. Carefully, you line your first shot up, aiming for a major artery on the nearest man's throat. With a flick, your silent weapon slips into his neck, and bright red sprays into the mist as his body crumples and he clutches at his throat.

Adjusting your aim, you can see that the second man has started running forward to investigate. You throw your senbon before he can move too much, but your aim goes low and left as he turns slightly on a step. You hit him on his right collarbone, causing him to stumble briefly from the pain of moving his arm while running.

He yanks the needle out, and is scanning the forest for you. He's either going to yell for help or run soon.

What do you do?

>A. Quickly use the Water Bullet Jutsu before he can react.
>B. Use Shunshin to dash forward, and throw a kunai between his eyes. This is fast, but it will bring you out of cover.
>C. Use the False Sound Jutsu to cause laughing to come from behind him. He may come closer.

Then quickly scan our surroundings for enemies and go for the kill with them in the same way.

>C. Use the False Sound Jutsu to cause laughing to come from behind him. He may come closer.
>>
You draw a kunai from your pouch, and silently curse to yourself. Well, there's no point in wasting time anymore. If you get left behind in this competition, you'll probably never hear the end of getting beat out by a couple of Genin. Granted, you and everyone else knows that's not really fair, but it won't stop the ribbing.

As you contemplate your social life casually, you dash from cover and flick the knife between the man's eyes, and it slips into his skull. He hits the ground and you look up, seeing several figures standing ominously in the distance.

Their stances lower, as you imagine they see you.

Hard to say, most of the fights had some really cool shit going on. I think I'd ultimately go with Takeshi v Boruto. Gotta love one last battle where you pull out all the stops.

>>44829417
If we're talking Chunin exam finals Kon, I'd say it'd be a good fight, but Takeshi might take it in the end. Kon was pretty susceptible to genjutsu, and that's what'd do him in. He had a powerful AoE and a counter to physical attacks with his KG, but I don't think he'd be experienced enough to take Takeshi down before he uses up too much chakra, and at that point it'd be over. Kon could do it if he rushed Takeshi down, but I don't see it happening.

My favorite is Yasu just because I like strong girls, but that's no reason for Takeshi to waifu her, so don't take that the wrong way. There needs to be a whole lot more development before there's any of that.

>>44829756
Kon is almost the opposite of Takeshi, he's highly specialized as opposed to more general. His bread and butter is Impact, which can't really be taught, and now senjutsu, which is high level stuff you don't teach to just anyone. Though having a combo release KG does mean that Kon has a fine grasp of molding separate elements. That is something that he could be very effective at teaching.

You'll definitely get more chances to pull out all the stops, and a couple fights in particular are likely to have plenty of spectators. As for any final developments, they're still somewhat up in the air. We still have a bit of a ways to go. From what Mini has said in previous threads, I expect the quest proper to wrap up roughly around the same time Mini finishes Boruto Quest's first half and takes a break. So people might be starving for their Nardo quests for a while.

I'd do the same thing, just take the Medabots concept and run with it. >>44843671
Personally I'd probably go for an older Himewari. She just seems like a nice person to be around. Kayo would also have been an option if I wasn't allergic to dogs and cats.

As far as Takeshi goes I've got no clue. I don't dislike any of the girls, and preferably I just want him to really get to know most of them before the eventual routelock.
>Implying players won't just jump in bed with the first available option

And if we can't go the Shikadai Route, there's still Kayo. She's a bro and she's of the best girls.

Also, about the idea of training with Kurenai, what do you guys think? We would be able to focus on genjutsu and get really good with it, but i think it may limit our other options.
>>
>>44856947
I honestly can't think of a better Konoha jounin to train us than Kurenai.
I guess Kabuto could be secondary option, but that's more to fill in the gaps.

I'd really like to see how far we can go with genjutsu, it gets the least love in the series unless you have magic eyes

>>
>>44858137
Kakashi hardly used genjutsu, I can't remember a fight that's not Zabuza where he used it
>>
>>44858396
Kakashi hardly uses any jutsu other than Chidori and Sharingan-bullshit after a certain point.
>>
>>44858396
He can use lots of Jutsu, but writer laziness denied him the wide repertoire he was supposed to have. He's supposed to know almost as many Jutsu as Orochimaru across a variety of disciplines.
>>
man we need to become genjustu Orochimaru or something, just so the uchiha don't get to hog all the OP genjutsu that shit is so strong they can warp reality
>>
>>44858488
Kakashi is sort of like a wizard who knows nearly all the spells in the world, but only has 6 Spell Slots each day due to his shit chakra reserves.
>>
Does anyone else feel like Takeshi might actually be offended at this group's lack of team cohesion?

They basically all fucked off to do their own thing with little to no regard for other members of their team and have a game of 'Who can get the highest killcount.' That kinda shit doesn't really fly in the ninja world, and seems like something that might get to his tactical sensibilities.
>>
>>44858657
He has plenty of chakra, he just keeps to few spells by DM fiat so he doesn't overshadow the pcs.

>>44858854
Sarasu okayed it so while he might not like he'd get over ruled
>>
>>44858854
Well, Takeshi's main selling point is his ability to adapt to any situation or enemy even when he has only basic jutsus at hand. So i don't think this kind of group would be a big problem to him.

>>44858137
Kakashi is good, really good, but he's already taken. And genjutsu isn't really his focus. He is more of a ninjutsu/taijutsu guy. Kurenai, on the other hand, is a genjutsu specialist, and the only one i remember without bullshit eyes.

>Oh, well that makes it better.
Well when she KNOWS we're about to hit her with bell paralysis, and instead of cutting the wire, our closing rapidly, decides to try and get in a shoot out with us. That's pretty arrogant. Also Archer recovered a HELL of a lot faster from stage one a than she did. Most anons thought they were going to be throwing into a rotation.
>>
>>44858854

I was actually thinking the same thing.

Don't worry, though. I don't think he'd actually do anything about it. He might not like it, but he'd accept it.

Still, though. It's this kind of thing that perpetuates the flashy ninja culture that makes everyone focus on bloodlines and speshul moves and shit.

Granted, that focus is what allowed us to win the Chuunin Exams, so I can see him having mixed feelings about it. The more people believe in it, the bigger his combat advantage, but the worse his social disadvantage, like in situations like this. Takeshi is a precision killer. He doesn't kill hordes of enemies, he takes out the one guy that can wreck everyone's shit.

If anything, he'd probably be annoyed that ninja from *his* village think the way they do, but he'd also probably want enemy/rival ninja to think that way.

But yeah. Ever since we Solid Snaked a Jinchuuriki Gear and got halfhearted applause for it, I've been feeling the salt myself. I mean, we won the Chuunin Exam, so that washed a bunch of the salt away, but still. I'm just an Anon. I can only imagine how salty Takeshi must be feeling about it. Even if he doesn't admit it.

Still, while he'd be slightly offended, he's still game. After all, >>44859166 has a point about adaptability, and through this Takeshi may learn that he has no crowd control moves--ate up a bunch of burritos with wire and a Fuuma. Nevermind. The Adaptability point still stands, and Takeshi seems like he's up for friendly competitions from time to time. Like the epic fistfight with Grey Fox.
>>
>>44866000
>

The more people believe in it, the bigger his combat advantage, but the worse his social disadvantage, like in situations like this. Takeshi is a precision killer. He doesn't kill hordes of enemies, he takes out the one guy that can wreck everyone's shit.

But that exact reason is why he shouldn't have one the chunin exam. Everyone thinks of him as some super spheshul sekrit badass, but he's just a ninja with a good work ethic. That same work ethic might have him say something/have a small rant when prompted.

Which would be plenty of fun to have him explain to people, step by step, why the moves they've spent so long perfecting are completely superfluous when compared to much easier, much more efficient jutsu that are only lacking in one or two aspects compared to their flashy shit.

For example, if Yasu has time to be swinging around a sword as big as she is, she has time to move in with an even lighter sword, kill the guy, and be moving on to someone else. Or just, ya know, use a chakra-metal tanto like a normal fucking ninja. Hell, with this mist technique, there is no reason we should even be seen.
>>
>>44866211
Keep in mind we run on anime physics, swinging a giant sword may be just as easy for her as a boot knife. I mean, look at Zabuza, he was renowned for silently offing people with a sharp lump of irob
>>
>>44866211
>if Yasu has time to be swinging around a sword as big as she is, she has time to move in with an even lighter sword
To be fair, she basically uses it like a big, sword-shaped bludgeon.
>It was too big to be called a sword. Massive, thick, heavy, and far too rough. Indeed, it was a heap of raw iron.
>>
>>44866385
>>44866407
Also also to be fair, she's not just fighting other humans. There's all kinds of oversized shit in the world, and plenty of shinobi have really strong physical defenses, things a normal sword couldn't swat away or penetrate like something with the mass of pic related
>>
>>44866502

True.
>>
>>44866502
She could probably use it as a basis for more advanced jutsu in the future
>>
>>44868330
The "surfing on a huge-ass sword" jutsu is the only one that comes to mind that could be more useful for that one in comparison to a smaller one.

I was thinking, Takeshi is the perfect ANBU. He acts like a professional, his main strengths are adaptability and planning, he has shown that he can use everything in a fight (from taijutsu/genjutsu/ninjutsu to poison and the arena) to his advantage and his main strategy is to take out his enemies before they can use their most powerful abilities.

ANBU should call him right now.
>>
>>44898743
The only reason they haven't is because him going poof this soon after exams would raise red flags given how prestigious this exam was over others. Most nations are going to be watching him for a while.
>>
>>44898912
but that's just it. Even if he DID go poof, his skillset is so goddamn generic that noone can actually pin any single incident on him.
>>
>>44898944
The bells are actually pretty telling. Not many nin know it.
>>
>>44899009
Sure, the bells are. We'll just use something else, find another vehicle for that same jutsu. The whistle of Fuuma being thrown through the air might work, for example.
>>
>>44899028
That'd be even more unique and therefore even easier to place. Good idea mind you, just saying.
>>
>>44899009
Well, alternatively, we can return to the village with three scrolls worth of criticisms about how Sarasu and his team did. We'll be known for something, then.

>>44899081
We're known as the kid with a talent for deception and misdirection. We could spec in Taijutsu from here on out if we decide to go ANBU.

"It pays to be obvious, especially if you have a reputation for subtlety." -Asimov
>>
>>44899120
I'd rather spec to be good overall rather than specialization. Too easy to get countered being a one trick pony.
>>
>>44899164
We can gain proficiency in skills one at a time. We have fundamentals, so it's time to make progress down the various skill trees. Hitting them one at a time is just my suggestion, since speccing in Taijutsu for now might pay off in the short term
>>
>>44899195
Rather get some more water Jutsu and learn fire so we can do Boil stuff
>>
>>44899240
I personally put this as a high priority, the faster we get another chakra nature, the more time we have to get new jutsu for it, and that gives us more versatility than anything else
>>
>>44899240
I would say Lava is superior, but Ruko already has blood manipulation. The bastard. I wanted bloody puppetry!

But yeah, if we're going to get another release, I'd prefer lightning. Gale style is the SHIIIIIIIIT and lightning would be an amazing asspull once we've soaked an enemy. Water and fire just don't have the same synergy, whatever sort of acid mist Terumi pulled.
>>
>>44899120
Honestly, i think learning medic stuff is a better option. Combat medics are really fucking dangerous, and we could kill without leaving a mark.

Mix that with some genjutsu and stealth based taijutsu and Takeshi would be a fucking ghost in the battlefield.
