You are Experiment KP-B-280. You are in a Facility you don’t know the name of, in a place with an unknown location, surrounded by people you don’t know, and no knowledge besides what the scientists have implanted you with. These problems pale in comparison to the fact that your Handler seems to have labeled you a failure, and you suspect that failures don’t have long lifespans here. That problem itself however, while holding some prime existential questions for you and your future, is currently dwarfed in urgency by your current situation.
You are trapped in your room, which fell into pitch blackness as soon as your Handler left. Sounds you have never heard before are suddenly on the edge of your consciousness, barely noticed over your brisk heartbeat. Putting your hand in front of face reveals nothing and your frantic tapping at the screen of your wrist bracer fails to light it up as it has before. You would fear you blindness if not for the fact that you can see something. You are just not sure if it’s real.
The longer you stare into the darkness the sharper the colors swirling across your vision seem to become. At first they were flashes in the corner of your eye, muted incandescent blobs rolling to and fro before disappearing. Every color you know and a few you don’t are mixed in, but dull and transparent, closer to black than anything else. As the miasma grew more defined three colors began to dominate.
>>
A heavy dark red, like dried blood, dominates the canvas. It swallows the other colors like fire, flecks of silver and gold transforming into the overwhelming scarlet. Small dots of blue, popping into existence for seconds before fading, their colors covering the spectrum from lavender to navy. Even as dozens of them come and go you are convinced you have yet to see a shade repeat. The green shoots through the red and the blue alike, changing from quick lightning bolt spreads to steady curling vines and back, twisting into each other as the old streaks wither and are subsumed.

As the colors grow more vibrant the sounds turn to whispers, and you catch snippets.

“…kill all…”

“Puppet…”

“…stop fighting.”

“You have to…”

“Don’t listen…”

The voices are the same but different, three distinct flavors of speech coming from the same mouth. Coarse and heavy, dull and wispy, confident and dismissive.

The colors have surrounded you and the whispers have died. Melting, they do not split as much as cease to be around each other. Two figures form in front of you, and you can feel a third presence behind.
>>
The red one, Bee, looks like you, though as much as a year younger with long hair and a scar on her cheek. Rage shapes her, from the scowl on her face to her aggressive stance. You think she is growling under her breath as well. Short, ragged sleeves and a scratched out KP and 280 adorn her thin shirt. She leaks antagonism, and while none of it feels directed at you particularly, you don’t know if that could change.

The green one, Pink you believe, while almost the same age, looks like a different person at first glance. Her hair is cut short and the dark shade of green implies it’s a different color than yours. She bounces lightly on her feet in a relaxed position, but her presence seems to fill the room regardless. You find yourself avoiding her eyes reflexively, despite her gaze’s lack of hostility.

Both of your ghosts seem to be waiting for you to say something.

“…Hello?” Your voice comes out whispery and you cough and try again.

“Hello.” Still timid but louder.

You try to give… yourselves a smile, but it feels forced. You aren’t in a very happy place right now.

Bee looks that much closer to pouncing on you, her scowl deepening. She opens her mouth, but Pink interrupts her.
“Since you obviously didn’t hear me earlier, you need to get Kamili to trust you. Acting like a lost little lamb may get you sympathy from an idiot like Gut, but Kam will never fall for it.”

You try to ask who Kam is, thought you suspect that it’s the name of the scarred girl from earlier, but Bee has rounded on Pink, her hostility finally given a clear target.

“Don’t ever insult her!” Bee dives at Pink, but instead of tackling her to the ground simply swoops through her, the points where they overlap turning an eye searing yellow. Pink didn’t even bother to look at her attacker, instead keeping eye contact with you.

“You need to stay away from Wax, the black kid with the two stooges following him. Avoid the Pets up top, you’ll know them when you see them. Keep your head down and do what the doctors say. You’ll live longer.”

Bee seems to be going through every negative emotion you know of while prostrate on the floor. Seeming to settle on impotent anger she begins beating her fist on ground rhythmically. You’re not entirely sure how she would react if you turned her attention back on you.

As you look around the room you notice that unlike your first thought, the light that is letting you see isn’t coming from the apparitions. At least not totally. The entire room seems to be washed out, the silver colors you saw early turned into grey. The light is constant and seems to emanate from nowhere. The only colors you can see are your ghosts, as even your own brown skin and white shirt have taken on the drab greyness.

“The Doctor said my answer was wrong. What did I say?” You ask Pink.

“How should I know? He was probably lying. That’s what they do. Doesn’t matter anyway, just suck-up to him and get on his good side.”

The presence at your back has been constant as Pink talked, and you turn, with trepidation, to see what it is. The figure crouched in the corner is blue, and from behind she looks like Bee with less care towards her appearance. Her clothes have stains and her hair is long and unkempt. What little you can see of her expression looks intensely focused on the notes she is scratching on the wall with chalk. You note her handwriting is straight and clean, identical to the faded notes you saw on the wall earlier.

“Ignore her. She’s useless.” Pink tells you.

You get up out of the chair to approach Blue, and you see Pink’s eyes narrow slightly. She doesn’t object as you walk towards Blue though.

Blue shuffles slightly as she runs out of writing room in her corner and begins anew on a blank section of wall. As you come closer you hear her mutter under her breath, though you can’t make out exactly what she is saying. Standing next to her she gives no indication that she has noticed you. Her notes, according to what words you can understand in between the numbers and signs, mention the Tellin religion. Everything else is a mystery to you though.

“Hello? What’s your name?”

“Save Puppet.” In the middle of her muttering this statement is clear and loud. She still hasn’t given any indication that she has noticed you.

You crouch down next to her. “Who’s Puppet? Why does she need saving? What’s happening to me right now?” You turn back to look at Pink and Bee. Pink has taken a seat in the doctor’s chair and is lazily spinning in it while Bee has taken to glaring daggers at her while sitting on the floor. “Do you guys know? How are you here, why is everything grey but you?”

“Don’t ask me. This is a first for me too. I just had the short bitch glaring at me out of every other reflection.” Pink answers, sounding bored. Bee just ignores you. “Mopey over there is called Kip by the way.”

Kip has continues her writing, but its topic has changed. She’s started drawing a chart of circled names, connected by lines. She’s halfway through it but you can see all the names center around a ‘Waxillium’. Kip’s own name is some distance away from his, with a single line leading from his to hers. In her circle she has Puppet written in smaller handwriting below her name. Waving a hand in front of Blue’s face finally provokes a reaction as she slaps your hand out of the way to continue writing.

In a monotone voice she says, “Stop being dumb.” She finishes her chart and points to her circled name. “Puppet’s mine. Get her back.”

She goes back to ignoring you and writing.

Well we should ask everything they can teach to us. Staying alive and learning to control the Nat being the priority.
>>
Examining her drawings closer doesn’t illuminate their meaning, but maybe your ghosts know more than you? Before you can ask you hear Pink’s voice. “Don’t bother asking about whatever bullshit she’s writing. I read her journals and it’s all inscrutable. And if I don’t get it little miss illiterate definitely won’t.” After a pause she continues. “Illiterate means you can’t read.”

“I can read!”

“T-R-I-A-G-E.”

“…shut up.”

You don’t think Pink and Bee are going to be much help in this situation.

“What are the Tell? Were they a religion?”

For the first time Kip turns her head to see you. Her expression is one of disgust. “The Tell are dumb. ‘There is one God and they are everything.’” She spits in your face point blank before going back to her wall muttering darkly.

Carefully wiping florescent blue spittle off your face you stand up and face Pink again.

“How do I leave this place?” You ask.

“No clue.” Pink says. All of a sudden you feel weightless.
>>
“Find Puppet. Waxillium knows.” Kip whispers in your ear from behind. She pushes you softly upward and you begin floating. Your limbs flail as you leave the ground and a high-pitched squeak comes out of you. As you gain height, flipping in the air, you see Pink lazily following your flight with her eyes.

“Remember what I said, kid. Make Kam need you.”

Bee’s head also follows your smooth path. For a second you think she wants to say something but in the end she simply looks away.

Reaching the ceiling your stomach drops as you suddenly stop feeling weightless. The roof rushes away from you and you don’t even have time to scream before you meet the floor.

You wake up on the floor. The monotone chrome of the room greets you and the dried drool on your cheek tells you that you were asleep for some time. Getting to your hands and knees you piece together that at some point during your strange nap you must have fallen out of your chair. The dream is vivid, even after you have woken up and you wonder what it means.

The Doctors chair is gone, and your tube has been replaced with a small bed. Your sister’s tube is still in the corner and otherwise everything seems to be the same.

You check your sister’s capsule again, but don’t see any change. Seeing her and comparing her to how Bee looked you are more confident in guessing her age, which you would put to be around 7 or 8 years old. Your own refection in the glass of the capsule seems normal, and Bee isn’t anywhere to be seen.

You sit in your chair and try to clear your mind. Maybe you can get back in touch with your former selves through meditation. A minute of trying to quiet your thoughts just makes you think more however. What did the Doctor mean last night? What did he do to you? Did it lead to your strange dream? What powers do you have? In your dream Kip made you float, but was that part of her powers or simple dream logic? After a few minutes you deem your thoughts to jumbled up to get any good out of meditation currently.

You tap the screen of your silver wristband and it flickers to life. The interface is simple, giving you icon prompts. Currently you see two icons, one with an image of a stick figure walking, which you assume is the GPS, and one with an image of a door. Pressing the door icon causes your rooms door to swing upward. You assume pressing it again would close it. At the very least you aren’t currently trapped in your room.

You poke your head through the doorway quickly. The hallway is the same eggshell white as before, though the guards at the ends of the hallways have disappeared. Maybe a shift change? Either way you don’t desire to be out here waiting for them to make rounds.

You hurry down the hallway, one eye peeled for any of the distinctive white guard uniforms. It takes about 5 seconds after you take the first turn to realize you are totally lost. A quick attempt to retrace your steps simply leads you down more identical white hallways. You think you are passing doors to other rooms, but the seamless way the doors meet with the walls makes your unsure. Plaques at equidistant spots along each hallway support your hypothesis that something is there at least.

You try to use the door icon on your wristband, but nothing seems to happen. Knocking at the spots under the plaques leads to no responses. The occasional vent you pass is as well secured to the walls as the one in your own room. Trying to set the GPS for yourself just makes you realize you didn’t check your own room number before you left, and without the Doctor to set it for automatic you doubt it’ll be much help in finding your way around.

After half an hour you finally spot someone, a girl a few years younger than you leaning against a wall, whistling. She looks a lot different from any of the kids you saw in the Cafeteria. She has strawberry blonde hair wrapped in complicated curls framing her face and a fancy blue dress with too much lace and frilly bits you can’t name. You spy armband which has her designation on it, RN-A-1129, so you are at least sure she’s another experiment like you. She notices you and gives you a wave, with a cute smile to accompany it. “Hi. You look lost. Do you need some help getting around?”

“Uh, yeah. Do you know where the cafeteria is?” You hope if this girl shows you where it was you could remember the path back to your own room.

“Of course. But are you sure you want to go there? I mean little miss perfect is about to have her daily fight. I hear it’s going to be a good one. Fowler’s finally going to get a rematch.”

“That’s okay, I-“

“Come oooon.” She interrupts, an exaggerated pout on her face. She glances at her wrist. “I can take you to the cafeteria later, but the Gym is like, 5 minutes away and it’s supposed to start soon. Just follow me.”

As you follow the chipper girl you try to start a conversation. “Why were you in the hallway alone? Were you looking for guards?”

She giggles. “Have you seen any guards around? Guards go where the kids are, and almost everyone in Section 8 is being processed right now. Blood tests, routine check-ups, you know. They happen every couple of weeks and then poof, it’s a ghost town for a few hours.”

“So you were here to be alone with your thoughts?”

She gives a theatrical gasp. “How dare you. I’ll have you know I have frequently been told I don’t ever have a thought going through this pretty little head of mine.” You are pretty sure that was a joke, but from the little you’ve seen it wouldn’t surprise you if she really didn’t think about anything.

“I was waiting for a friend. He promised to meet me so we could go to the fight together. I don’ know why I expected him to be on time today, being late is that boy’s God-given gift.” She turns and gives you a smile. “Thanks to that I got to meet you though. Everything works out for the best, I find. An old friend leaves you in the lurch and you find a brand new one. Here we are!”

Your new companion has led you to a featureless wall. The red plaque on top implies it may not be nowhere though. You stare at the wall for a moment, before turning to the girl who is just smiling at you, waiting.

“So, uh. What are we doing here?”

She gives another giggle. “Wow, you really are new. Did they just wake you up? We’re at the elevator silly.” She gives her wristband, which you notice is gold instead of your own silver, and the featureless wall parts to show a small box. She skips inside and you follow.
>>
She seems content to spend the elevator ride in silence, softly humming to herself. The elevator doesn’t have many features, besides handle bars a hatch at the top, and a metallic console with 7 buttons. You catch Bee glaring at you from the metals reflection so you try your best to ignore its existence for the rest of the ride.

When the elevator stops your companion, who you realize has not yet given you her name, steps out of the box and gives a big sweeping gesture. “Welcome to the Gymnasium, new friend. Let’s get some good seats.” She skips away quickly, not giving you much time to take in the huge room. The ceiling is high enough above you that you can’t make out any features on it, and the room would be packed with kids if it wasn’t so mind-bogglingly big. The floor is sandy and there is a ring of chairs. In the middle of the ring no one is there except for Sca-Kamili, her face distinct even from a distance away.

You are led to the ring a seats that surrounds a Kamili and your friend sits in a seat right in the front.

“Hey, maybe we shouldn’t sit up here. There are a few seats in the back-” She grabs your arm before you finish and pulls you into the seat next to her.
“There’s nothing to see from back there. Front row seats are the only way to watch her fight, trust me.” Her grip on your arm doesn’t loosen and you are surprised how strong it is for such a small girl.

A horn sounds from above and your friend gives you a quick shush before turning towards the ring. A few kids reluctantly stand up from their seats around the ring. Five approach Kamili slowly, a few holding metal pipes and one with a short knife. All of them look like they would rather be anywhere but here. Finally the girl directly behind Kamili breaks ranks and dashes forward, swinging her pipe at Kamili’s head. Kamili ducks and her leg shoots out between the girls. She goes sprawling, rolling in the dirt, but the short peace has been broken and the other four kids have charged her, a blonde boy jumping over his companion’s body to attack.

A thin girl with the knife reaches Kam first and tries an overhead swing to bury it in her head. Kam catches her wrist and twists it, and the girl drops the knife with a short scream. Kamili twists her body and crouches in the same motion and the girl is flipped over her back, landing heavily on the ground. Then an awkward kick from a black haired boy catches Kam in her face before she could recover.

Without a pause she grabs the boy’s leg between her arm and body and pulls sending the boy to the ground. A knife in her hand she stabs the boy in the thigh, making scream before scrambling to the side to dodge a swing from the blonde boy.
>>
In shock, you turn to your new companion “What’s happening? Why, I don’t-what?”

She answers without taking her eyes off the fight. You can still hear small screams and pops from the battlefield.

“Fowler’s lost every time they’ve fought before. He’s a few years younger so it’s not surprising. I think they decided to even the playing field by making her do her regular daily fight before him. He’s over there.” Without looking she points across the ring at a short dark-skinned boy with his hair in braids. His focus is completely on the fight, and he leans forward elbows on his knees and chin in his hands. Next to him is a tall girl is looking at the ceiling, completely ignoring the bloodshed in front of her.

A horn rings out and you see Fowler smile before turning back to the fight. Kamili is the only one standing, with her hands on her knees to catch her breath. The other five kids are all on the ground or their hands and knees around her. A few guards walk into the pit, two with a stretcher for the stabbed boy who is giving high pitched whines in between sobs. As they pick up the losers one stands in front of Kamili with his hand out. After a tense moment she slaps the knife into his open hand and he leaves with the rest.

Another horn sounds and Fowler stands up, a smirk on his face. As he stalks into the ring Kam straightens up and takes a stance you don’t recognize but looks practiced, with her legs wide and body pointed towards her enemy. Fowler simply takes up a regular boxing stance and begins stalking towards her, feet never leaving the ground.
>>
When the horn sounds they move instantly, Fowler giving quick strikes and Kamili slapping them away. The boy doesn’t even bother blocking the return punches and kicks she throws at him, ducking and weaving between them. Then taking a kick to the stomach he locks her leg and pushes into her throwing her to the ground with himself on top. You think he tried to get a leg lock of some kind but Kam rolls and scrambles out of it, with none of her usual grace.

He bounces up before her and dives after her, head knocking into her chin. The rest of their fight is on the ground and hard to make sense of, elbows and fists slamming into each other and grunts coming out of both of them. Then Fowler rolls away from Kam with her arm clutched between his thighs and perpendicular to the rest of her body. He gives a short grunt and she gives a sharp scream for a second. Then he rolls away and pops up, hands raised in triumph while Kamili clutches her arm next to her body.

A horn sounds and two guards with stretchers come to pick her up while Fowler saunters back to the seat where you think the tall girl may have fallen asleep.

“Kam!” You hear Benny’s voice over the renewed conversation after the fight’s end. He tries to rush towards Kam’s stretcher but a guard simply picks him up and puts him under his arm like the child he is before following the others, ignoring his frantic struggles.

“Well that was fun to watch, wasn’t it?” Your new friends voice shakes you out of her stunned silence. “You wanted to go to the cafeteria, right? I’ll take you there now.” She says with a small smile. She’s sidled up to you and is hanging off your arm now.

As the girl leads you away from the Gym something that was tickling the back of your mind comes into sharper focus. It isn’t until the doors to the elevator shut that it finally clicks in your brain. The shirt Fowler was wearing was a wife beater, with no designation on it. His bored friend was in a dark hoodie and had pants covered in pockets. All the kids who fought before him were dressed in the same short sleeve white shirt and pant combo you are wearing.

There were more kids dressed like that, vastly different but similar in the fact that they weren’t wearing what you are. The kids who were dressed the same as you vastly outnumbered them, but the groups were all segregated.

The elevators gives a soft ding and your companion in her bright blue dress skips out, saying “Follow me!” in a sing-song voice.

Following quite a few paces back and doing your best to memorize the path you consider the fact that all of the cliques you saw were homogenous. The only exception was yourself and your new friend.
“Hey are we near the Cafeteria yet?”

“Food’s coming, don’t worry!” She calls back.

You briefly consider making a break for it, but getting even more lost in this facility while running away from a rather nice if increasingly creepy girl doesn’t appeal to you. “Where are we?”

“We’re entering the first section of the Facility. The Hive doesn’t let anyone in here other than their Handler. Their twitchy like that.”

She’s started to whistle again, a simple tune with only three notes, repeated over and over again. The white walls lose their luster, dirt and grime appearing in patches here and there. You pass a brown, flaky stain your implanted knowledge tells you is probably blood. The simple tune continues.
You stop trying to follow at a distance, walking closer to your guide after seeing fleeting movements out of the corner of your eye, and a familiar beat of running feet preceding you every time you enter a new hallway. The image of attacking the small girl next to you briefly flashes in your mind’s eye but she throws you a brilliant smile with a few too many teeth and it evaporates.

Eventually she leads you to a crossroads in a small atrium, still windowless but with a few chairs in various states of disrepair and a higher ceiling. She goes towards the center before stopping and turning back to you.

“You know, I like you. Most of the Rats down here don’t know their place. Always crying and moaning. I don’t know why they don’t get it. Keep your head down, do what the adults say, and eventually you’ll find God. Then they’ll let you join us on the civilized floor.” She gives you a pat on the cheek. “I think that one day, you’ll make an excellent soldier, one way or another. For what it’s worth I really, honestly, truly hope Hive doesn’t get you.”

“Will it be quick?” You ask.

“Well…” She tilts her head and scrunches up her face cutely. “I really don’t know. From what I hear it will be pretty icky, at least. Sorry.”

She walks past you but before she turns the corner she stops suddenly. She looks at you over her shoulder and says, “Obviously you shouldn’t follow me, or I’ll have to kill you. Good luck!”

The girl whose name you still don’t know is gone and you are alone. The light above you flickers in and out as you see heads slowly peer into your hallway from behind corners. Dead eyes and drooling mouths filter into view and you give a tired wave to Hive.

You’re pretty sure you’re well and truly fucked.

Probably next Saturday. I may change it to alternate Saturdays though depending on how much time personal responsibilities eat into my time. You may have noticed I have a tendency to spend over 12 hours straight at my keyboard.

I'll try to keep Twitter updated with any specific developments. I hope everyone had a good time and I'll probably be awake for a little while longer if anyone has any questions or concerns.

I'll also try and post another partial file to the pastebin, most likely featuring Kamili, in the next few days as an extra treat since she seems to be turning into a major character.

Otherwise I hope everyone has a good night and I'll see you the next time I run.
