Snowball continues to work as usual in the back and Babsy has her head in her hands, an incredulous look on her face at their childish antics.

I've been itching to do this ever since I've gotten back.

You contemplate telling the team off for playing with government property, but you figure if the government itself couldn't scare them, you have little hope of doing so.

"Hey." you sheepishly say as you approach the multi-armed cyborg, a shy wave as you do cementing how uncomfortable you are talking to girls.

"Two hours..." she says through cupped hands.

"I'm...sorry?" you ask, a little confused at her words.

"They have been at this..." one of her metal arms points to the arm wrestling, Bob slowly starting to slip to the side, "for two hours." She sighs and rubs her face. "It started as a test of how much PSI the arms could handle, last minute checks. Then we moved ont-" Babsy is cut off by a loud slam of metal on metal, followed by Mouse cheering and the other Bob cursing loudly, "...Then we moved on to it's torque. Then there was arguing as to if it was enough, too much, the Bobs boasted that their own augments were more than these arms and two hours later, here we are. Neither of the Bobs have one a single time, not even close, but their pig-headed pride and machismo prevents them from giving up. So the cycle continues and Mouse has probably drained them of any money they have for the next month..." she peeks through her fingers at you, "You don't plan to join this apelike behavior, do you?" You quickly shake your head, thanking whatever deity watching over you that you didn't give in to your instincts and give it a try. "Thank god. At least you have some sense unclouded by testosterone or competitiveness.

You've never really seen Babsy this frazzled before, but you suppose everyone has their limits. You carefully place a sympathetic hand on her shoulder. Babsy simply lets out another sigh.

"C'mon, he almost had it!" you hear Bob speak up, the other one rolling his shoulder and flexing the fingers of his rather impressive cybernetic arm. "One more! We can do this!"

"I gathered." you say, checking them closely. Damage so soon would be pretty terrible right now. "They look great, though."

"And they can bend a reinforced steel wrench on their maximum setting!" Bob says happily, holding up a now ruined wrench that's been curled into a circle. You make a mental note to never set Pandora's strength to maximum for any reason.

"We're ready to install them now if you'd like, though there is that...ah, other matter I needed to discuss with you." Mouse says this last part somewhat hushed, a serious look on her face. "But, ah, whenever you have time!"

yeah, uhm seems important

You figure more distractions might make Pandora's lessons once again impossible, so you decide to hold off on the hardware upgrade until afterward. They're not going anywhere, though you hope they aren't going to play with them more while you're gone.
However, what Mouse has to say seems pretty urgent, so you feel you're better off knowing right away.

"So, what did you need to tell me? Everything alright?" you ask taking a seat on a vacant stool.

"Right, well..." Mouse takes a seat across from you, folding her fingers together. "It's about the military model." she motions to a very bare-bones framework being worked on by Snowglobe at the moment, "We were contacted by Richards about it. Directly. Turns out he...wants us to give it some unconventional hardware and software upgrades. Stuff, classification wise, nobody should know about beyond him and us. Even you're supposed to be outta the loop on this, doc, but I guess that's been rescinded now. He wants to give it a whole cocktail of stuff a prototype shouldn't have. Dangerous stuff. Stuff an untested and unpredictable machine should not have. He seems to think that because Pandora is so harmless and agreeable, what's the harm in strapping some ordinance to this one? Not only that, he wants it to be what he refers to as 'tactically independent', which is bullshit speak for able to function fully without requiring any input from us, including a power source or commands. Solar power charging and the freedom and capability to be a one-robot army.
I don't think I need to tell you how dangerous this is, but my hands are tied. I can't tell him no, hell nobody here can, but I got a bad feeling in my gut about this, doc. Real bad. We all do." Mouse gives you a pleading look, like she wants guidance on what to do or how to go about all this. Obviously none of you can disobey a direct order from the general, but something this morally grey seems pretty unsafe.

This can be solved by adding software to, say, make it much better suited at extracting prisoners and saving people, as opposed to just being a killing machine.

You cross your arms and frown to yourself, thinking what Mouse has told you over carefully. The military's lack of foresight never ceases to amaze you. Still, you can't say no. However, you think there might be away to make this a little less ominous as you look over the new arms. Limiters.

"What if we installed software that prevented the use of this weaponry without authorization?" you ask, holding the mechanical fingers in your hand, looking over them carefully, "A sort of gun safety that won't allow access to all the deadly stuff without being armed first. I mean, general Richards didn't exactly say we couldn't, so we wouldn't be refusing any orders."

Mouse nods, scratching her cheek. "Yeah, that'd work for now. Though I still worry about the day when we have to turn them off. I don't like the idea of not having a human being in control of something this dangerous."

You not in agreement. "Neither do I, but it's the best we've got. With a little luck, this one will turn out to be like Pandora and will be genuinely pleasant to interact with. Or at the very least, not a dangerous psychopath." As you say this, Mouse warily eyes the small, spherical drone housing the rogue AI you put into hibernation sitting quietly on the top shelf.

"Yeah..." she still seems uneasy, but resolves herself to her work, "I'll draw up plans for some safeties, but it shouldn't increase development time too substantially. I assume the same can be said for your research team?"

"I trust their work." you say confidently, "After all, they did a pretty great job assisting me with Pandora, didn't they?" you try not to sound too stuck-up as you fire off a message to your team about the limiter software adjustments, but you can't help but feel pride at what you've accomplished.

For the most part countries are all the same, save for Korea now being a single country. NK was one of the main aggressors in the war as it allied itself with China,Russia and several smaller countries in the South Pacific. After the war ended, North Korea was essentially ground up into dust and snorted up the nostrils of post-war politics. It's now the United Korean Republic, with South Korean leadership in control and North Korean leadership either dead, in prison or missing.

A small portion of China was actually glassed by an over-zealous Japan (ironically) testing out it's new weaponry, but it's infrastructure, though under new leadership, is largely unchanged.

Russia is pretty much untouched, save for it's leaders much like the others. It has, however, had it's borders forced open to allow transfer of refugees and PoWs across Europe and Asia.

Drones vary in shape and size. Some, mostly personal assistants and entertainment drones, are humanoid, though with current tech, not to mention laws, you cannot make a drone look perfectly human. Typically "skin" color cannot be anything natural and they must have markings to indicate they are in fact a drone, including but not limited to their make, model and a scanable serial number. Earlier on there was a big controversy involving human traffickers passing off humans as advanced drones. That brought about the law that requires all drones to be noticeably inhuman to some degree.

I wonder how we get it through their heads that for the same reason we have war COUNCILS, you cannot focus the power of an entire army on one human, let alone prototype AI. Even assuming that they are acting in the country's best benefits, it won't necessarily be in the MILITARY's benefit, and it's highly likely that many will disagree with both the means and the result.

Or we can just give up on that front and generally teach the AI so that whatever they'll plan will be to our indirect benefit.

You've spent enough time in R&D and Grace is probably waiting for you outside Pandora's room already. You gather your things, remind Mouse not to play around with the hardware and take off, hearing Mouse and Bob having a heated discussion the moment you leave the room, pretty much assuring you that they're going to disregard your warnings.

As you arrive, you find Grace checking her PDA and looking around, probably wondering where you are. You apologize for the wait, explaining you had urgent matters to attend to, though you choose to omit the part where some of those matters involved watching some of the greatest engineers of the modern age arm wrestle a robot.

You enter to find Pandora having a tug-of-war with a now rather chewed up and disheveled-looking plush toy, laughing heartily each time Lucky yanks on it, causing her to jerk forward. She doesn't even notice you'd entered until you greet her, to which she simply responds with a "hi" before continuing her game with her robot dog. You're not surprised, but you'd hoped she'd at least give you a little more than that.

As Grace sets up, you sit with her and watch her tug back and forth with Lucky. At least you know she'll never be lonely. You feel confident in your decision to make her this companion. The thought of it makes you smile and you gently ruffle her hair.

I'm assuming you're from NZ. During the war they had little to do with anyone else beyond Australia, which was various oceanic and air battles for the lion's share of combat, though there were several invasions of Australian coasts, but none ended particularly devastatingly for either side. After the war, things pretty much mopped themselves up for NZ; they paid their dues and weren't really restructured. Their part was rather minor when compared to Russia, China and NK's in the war. They were kind of the Italy.

Here you go anon

Through some kind of miracle or just lucky timing, the plush toy they're playing with finally gives out and tears in half, sending Pandora sprawling backward in a giggling mess and Lucky tearing off across the room to further mangle his prize, shaking fluff and bits of fur everywhere. You grab her attention by standing over her and helping her up, leading her to the table where the study materials are ready for her. After a few minutes of talking about what she did with Lucky and how good he is at fetching things she throws, you get her to focus on her work, her capacity for play finally satiated. In fact, she manages to get quite a bit of work done in the time allotted. You're proud of her ability to work even after having so little attention span only moments before.

However, once her work is done, you decide to discuss the upgrades and the responsibility they will involve. How they will help her to grow just like a normal person would, but not without effort, discipline and focus. You want her to feel normal, but that will require her to really buckle down, because if she doesn't she could hurt someone, or herself.

You sigh. You're going to have to get her away from that dog if you plan to get anything done. Oh well, at least she got SOME work done today, even if you hadn't gotten anything through to her about responsibility. Still, you'll have more time tomorrow...

Just might be pleasant for her to get out more honestly, and she needs to use her new arms for something. Plus I think if we can prove a vanilla android could be great on their own the general won't feel the need to stuff so much weapons into military androids.

Its nice that this thread went a little more briskly than the last one.

As for questions I could ask, well what are the specialties of the other members of our team? There was more than just Kevin (Logic) and Grace (Emotions), and I'm wondering if any of them would help. Like no offense to Kevin, but maybe someone else might be better off teaching pandora things, or at least someone who can work in parrallel with him better than us. Because I don't think he likes us very much.
